Hospice caregivers help families through final days with loved ones, providing comfort and support and sharing their knowledge and expertise during difficult times. Hospice plays an important role in the lives of hundreds of people in our area, and we are grateful to you for your support of these vital services.

This newsletter is a brief look into the many ways your support is helping McLaren Home Care & Hospice (formerly VitalCare) bring compassionate care to our region. Thank you for making these programs available for all who need them.

New Name, Same Great Care

arlier this year, our Hospice programs adopted a new name: McLaren Home Care & Hospice. We want to assure you that although the name has changed, the care remains the same. We at the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation remain committed to ensuring that your gifts are used according to your wishes and that they will be directed to the hospice service area of your choice. All contributions will remain here in northern Michigan and will be invested into the services that care for our friends, neighbors, and family members.

for Patients and Families McLaren Home Care & Hospice provides care to patients throughout northern lower Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula.

The mission of Hospice is to provide comfort, support, and end-of-life care as we would for our own loved ones.

Donors Make the Difference PROFILE: David and Joy McBride "People hear the word hospice and think it is about giving up,” said Joy McBride. “But hospice exists to help people live out the remainder of their days with dignity, free of pain, and with assistance, so that family and friends can focus on enjoying the last weeks they have with their loved one—without having to focus on caregiving.”

Joy first experienced the compassionate care of hospice during her sister’s illness and passing several years ago.

That experience changed her mindset and made her realize the need for hospice services and the importance of making them available. Not long after that time, Joy and her husband David became connected with McLaren Home Care & Hospice Emmet/Charlevoix Region (formerly Hospice of Little Traverse Bay) and both of them got involved.

David served on the Board of Trustees for McLaren Hospice locally, and was influential in helping develop the plans for and building of Hiland Cottage. He and others traveled to multiple hospice houses throughout the state looking for the best features to incorporate in the Petoskey home. The resulting Hiland Cottage is an excellent facility that offers patients and families a welcoming, comfortable environment to receive care.

HOSPI-TEEN: Teenagers Engage With Hospice

Harbor Springs High School juniors and seniors enrolled in the Hospi-teen Program

Joy was a volunteer at Hiland Cottage for several years, and the couple has been integral in supporting the Hospi-teen Program, which began as a way to train young people how to interact with the elderly and how to face death and dying. “There are a lot of people who shy away from that,” said David. “But once these teenagers spend time with the elderly, they realize it is not difficult.

They are going to be prepared to be with their own loved ones when they need them.”

David and Joy said that being involved with hospice and the Hospi-teen Program has been a wonderful experience. David said, “Whatever you give, you are going to get back wonderful experiences. It is heartwarming to be involved.”

T

he Hospi-teen Program is a partnership between Hiland Cottage and Harbor Springs High School National Honor Society. Students enrolled in the program provide companionship to hospice patients; assist with activities, meals, and clerical work; and complete CPR and sensitivity training. Each year, the students contribute hundreds of volunteer hours to McLaren Home Care & Hospice Hiland Cottage. This year’s group of 31 Hospi-teens will develop leadership skills, understand compassion, and learn the importance of contributing to the community. Your Legacy Gifts Make a Big Impact Each year, contributions and memorial gifts allow McLaren Home Care & Hospice to provide care to hundreds of patients and their families throughout northern Michigan. Legacy gifts, those that are included in your will or estate plan, are extremely important and allow us to secure the long-term future of hospice care throughout the region. Without them, we simply would not be able to provide all the services we offer.

Leaving a gift in your will or designating McLaren Home Care & Hospice as a beneficiary of your retirement assets or life insurance policy could be the single biggest

donation you ever make. It is also likely to be the one that makes the biggest difference.

Volunteers Give Back PROFILE: Darinda Adlam "I know how important hospice is, and I want to continue to support our patients by doing the work that I'm good at," said Darinda Adlam, who has been volunteering one day a week at the Cheboygan Hospice House since 2011.

Darinda worked in a variety of roles at Procter & Gamble, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and as a licensed real estate broker in Cheboygan before she began volunteering. "Whatever your background or your interest, you can be a volunteer," said Darinda.

Darinda provides administrative support, helps with fundraising and mailings, and assists with a

4

host of other activities. She is also a member of the McLaren Cheboygan Campus Guild, which actively supports fundraising activities that provide equipment and technology for the McLaren Northern Michigan Cheboygan Campus and the Cheboygan Region of McLaren Home Care & Hospice.
