WELCOME to the

36th Annual

BLISSFEST we’re so happy you’re here!

Like many of you, I have spent the last 362 days waiting for this weekend. And what a weekend it will be! This year, like every year, the lineup is absolutely phenomenal on all four stages! Want to keep your feet feeling blissful? Give our new shuttle service from the camping areas to the main stage a spin! The food and craft vendors will not disappoint and are once again the best of the best. They help make this festival a success and we couldn’t be more grateful to have them and you all here to help us celebrate music, children, friends, and family. As many of you know, Blissfest has been gifted a new future forest and as we navigate the best use of this property we have a couple requests for you. The future forest was heavily cut and needs your help nurturing its new growth. Please be respectful of the boundary postings in the new forest and when setting up camp resist the urge to sweep away the leaves from your site. These leaves are essential in protecting the new saplings that are taking root. We also learned that in order for our beloved Hardwood Haven Forest to flourish we need to clear out some of the old unhealthy trees to let more sunshine in to the forest floor. Woods camping is a great area for those craving shaded tent areas and we want these forests to be happy and healthy! So again, PLEASE help us protect these magical places that we all call home for this weekend. During the festival the Blissfest Future Forest will be open for anyone wishing to stroll through and look about. This year, camping will be limited to an additional 75’ of freestyle camping along the eastern edge of Hardwood Haven. There will be fencing and signage to mark where camping ends to help eliminate any confusion on new boundaries. We hope that you share our enthusiasm in wanting to protect and promote this newest addition to Blissfest. The forest is just one aspect of what the board has been working on this year. We have also focused on succession planning, board development, and staff retention to mention a few. If you have a passion for Blissfest and have thought that you may be interested in getting more involved, now is the time! Thank you to all of our coordinators, volunteers, staff and fellow board members. Without your dedication, we wouldn’t be here for this beautifully, Blissful weekend. Now get out there and enjoy your Bliss!

The Accidentals

Baskery

10 String Symphony

ARTISTS 10 String Symphony

This Nashville duo began as a partnership of mutual admiration and a much needed creative release for Rachel Baiman and Christian Sedelmyer, two 5-string fiddle players and veteran sidemen of Nashville’s music scene. Rachel, a former Illinois state fiddle champion in the old time tradition, needed an outlet for the new songs she was writing. Christian, originally a classically trained violinist and now a current touring member of the Jerry Douglas Band, was looking to get in touch with the impetuous spirit of the rock bands in which he played before his arrival in Nashville. With the love of the 5-string fiddle and its musical possibilities, the band’s mission statement is as clear as it is expansive: Two fiddles. Two Voices. Epic music.

The Accidentals

The Accidentals have been described as “one of the most ground-breaking musical experiences one might just have in a lifetime” (Jonathan Frahm, Yahoo Voices). They recorded three original albums, were guest artists on fifteen others, scored two films, and landed song placements in commercials, documentaries, and music compilations while playing over seven hundred live shows, all before graduating high school! In 2015 alone, they played over 200 shows at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the US. They are currently recording with Grammy Award Winning Producer Stewart Lerman (Sufjan Stevens, St. Vincent, Regina Spektor) and pop icon Marshall Crenshaw. Look for a brand new release in the coming months!

Baskery

No matter where they go in the world, these Swedish sisters are told that their audiences have never heard or seen anything like them; they have a completely unique set-up and perform with seemingly inexhaustible energy. This high voltage trio, now based in Los Angeles, has been compared to everything from Fleetwood Mac to First Aid Kit, and from the Black Keys to Led Zeppelin. Baskery’s sound is built on, but not limited to, what three people can do together. It’s all about turning the music on its head and blending the straightforwardness of punk with the subtlety of singer/songwriting. Expect the sounds of “banjopunk,” “new folk,” “nordicana,” an energetic live show and killer sibling harmonies.

Breathe Owl Breathe

The Boxcar Boys

The Boxcar Boys

The Boxcar Boys create their distinct and energetic sound by weaving together a captivating bevy of folk traditions, Dixieland jazz, and Klezmer, all performed with good-time New Orleans spirit. Their shows are joyous acoustic celebrations featuring 6 inimitable musicians on clarinet, tuba, fiddle, trombone, accordion and washboard. “Don’t Be Blue,” their debut album, placed them on the EJazzNews list of Best Canadian Jazz Bands, while their sophomore release “Rye Whiskey” earned them a nomination for Instrumental Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards (2013).Their diverse and innovative sound has brought the band to a wide variety of venues and festivals including The WayHome Festival, The Toronto Jazz Festival, The Deep Roots Festival, Blissfest, The Blue Skies Folk Festival and The Ashkenaz Klezmer Festival.

Breathe Owl Breathe

Breathe Owl Breathe consists of lyricist and guitarist Micah Middaugh, cellist and vocalist Andrea MorenoBeals, and percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Trevor Hobbs. The music of Breathe Owl Breathe has always been steeped in magic. Their songs occupy the hazy space between wakefulness and dreaming, where the tangible world meets the transcendental. This trio of friends began making music nearly a decade ago in a remote cabin tucked away in a Northern Michigan river valley. Despite the growth and experience that they have gained along the way—recording five albums, releasing a children’s book, and logging several crosscountry tours—the band’s sound is still rooted in the mysticism, warmth and wide-eyed wonder that imbued their earliest songs. Their visual art plays an equally prominent role. Micah is a visual artist and printmaker, and is largely responsible for the band’s aesthetic; child-like, timeless and whimsical.

Brown Rice Family

Brown Rice Family is today’s freshest band jamming towards global solidarity and organic happiness. Guided by a strong belief in the natural flow of things, BRF provides the masses with distinctively organic World Roots Music, encompassing jazz stylings, afrobeat, reggae, rock, Latin rhythms, hiphop, and funk. The band is presently comprised of eight members hailing from all over the world. Their diverse national backgrounds set the stage for their unique coexistence, musical creativity and dance. The band’s colorful sound waves will carry rhythm surfers on a musical journey that straddles ancient and contemporary global music. BRF firmly believes in selfimprovement and environmental improvement, so the collective is perpetually seeking out healthier ways of living, grooving, and eating.

Cary Morin

Cedric Burnside Project

Cary Morin

Described as “one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today,” Cary Morin brings together the great musical traditions of America and beyond like none other. With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that can convey both melodic elation and gritty world-weariness, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as acoustic Native Americana with qualities of blues, bluegrass, jazz, jam, reggae, and dance. For two consecutive years (2013 and 2014), Cary won the Colorado Blues Challenge Solo Championship. He was also nominated for Aboriginal Entertainer of the Year and Best Blues CD in the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards. In 2013, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Fort Collins Music Association and won the Colorado Fan Favorite Poll in the blues category for his second solo release, “Streamline.”

Cedric Burnside Project

Cedric Burnside, grandson of legendary R.L. Burnside and son of drummer Calvin Jackson, has been playing music all his life. He has developed a relentless, highly rhythmic charged style with strong hip-hop and funk influences. This four-time winner of the prestigious Blues Music Award’s Drummer of the Year is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in the world. Growing up at his grandfather’s side, he began touring at age 13 playing drums for “Big Daddy” on stages around the globe. “I write about my life, my kids, and everyday things. I try to stick to the truth,” Cedric says. He has been recording and touring the world with guitarist and lifelong friend Trenton Ayers. Their latest album, Descendants of Hill Country, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Blues Album of the Year.

Christie Lenée

Christie Lenée’s unique guitar work is often compared as “Michael Hedges meets Joni Mitchell and Dave Matthews.” She delivers profound instrumental compositions with heartfelt, consciously uplifting songs. Christie Lenée’s pieces have been showcased at the NAMM Show in Anaheim in Nashville, live on National Television and Radio, on stage with artists such as Tim Reynolds (guitarist for Dave Matthews Band), Amy Ray from the Indigo Girls, and Stanley Jordan. Her most recent album “Live at the Hideaway Cafe” was one of three finalists for “Best Album of 2014” (Indie Acoustic Project Awards); the song “Love Who You Are” was nominated for a 2016 Posi Award in the category “Songs for Personal Transformation.”

Christie Lenée

Civil Twilight

Civil Twilight

Civil Twilight’s songs embrace every corner of human emotion, balancing delicate, poetic lyrics with sweeping arrangements that touch all the senses: a phrase to make you think; a rolling drumbeat you can feel in your bones; a guitar vamp as illustrative as a picture; a shimmer of keys whose light can nearly be seen and heard. Their third record on Wind-Up is built on this vibrancy, on the permanent dust of South Africa’s Cape Town youth; on the connection that unites them all as brothers beyond blood and on their new home in America where they pull from the innate, thriving musicianship of Nashville, where they live.

Claudia Schmidt & Sally Rogers

Claudia Schmidt and Sally Rogers have been at their music for four decades, often in solo ventures. Claudia has traveled easily between folk, jazz and theater, and Sally is well known in the folk world and has created celebrated children’s music as well as writing for community theater. Yet something about their musical chemistry, which first showed itself when they joined each other onstage for the very first time at the North Country Folk Festival in Ironwood, Michigan, 35 years ago, took them to a new and different place. They are thrilled with the release of their fourth collaboration, their latest CD titled, “We Are Welcomed.” It’s a whole different sonic experience, with their amazing vocals front and center, but surrounded with wonderful textures and rhythm. Both of these Michigan Folk veterans are Blissfest alumni.

Conga Se Menne

One would not expect to find world class musicians in this small northern college town. Marquette, Michigan is not Chicago, Nashville, nor even Memphis, but you couldn’t tell by listening to Derrell Syria and the members of Conga Se Menne. Though their lyrics are geared for fun, the quality of their sound is no laughing matter. Syria’s original songs carry the flavor of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in lyrical silliness and the spirit of its hearty residence in musical excellence. Conga Se Menne live and work along the chilly invigorating banks of Lake Superior. Their mastery of melodic syncopation is second to none.

Delilah DeWylde and the Lost Boys

ARTISTS Delilah DeWylde and the Lost Boys

A long time ago, at the dawn of the Atomic Age, a succession of no-good punks and ill-mannered teenagers took the best of American roots music — hard-partying honky tonk country, searing gutbucket blues and lonesome hillbilly twang — and distilled it into a potent moonshine known as rockabilly. This combustible formula, passed down through the generations, forms the heart of the revved-up stylings of Delilah DeWylde and the Lost Boys. Mixing their own self-penned songs with vintage country/honky tonk hits, rockabilly favorites, and surf gems by such artists as Hank Williams Sr., Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson, Buck Owens, Gene Vincent, and Dick Dale, Delilah and the Lost Boys come out on stage looking and sounding like a step back in time. Dressed to the nines in the tradition of pre-color television, the band thrills audiences with its spirited performances.

Dirty Bourbon River Show

Deftly melding sounds that range from hard-edged blues to Lisztian piano driven ballads to New Orleans brass, Dirty Bourbon River Show fascinates audiences with their eccentricity and dexterity, coupled with their ability to harken back to by-gone eras in music. Since their formation in early 2009, the band has released nine studio albums and played over 750 live shows, fast earning them a stellar reputation for their tight, multi-faceted sound and high-energy performances. They can be found bringing their blend of “New Orleans Big Brass Circus Rock” to festivals and respected venues all over the USA.

Dragon Wagon

The Dragon Wagon crew features Detroit-award nominated virtuoso Troy Radikin on mandolin and vocals, the classical and awe-inspiring Megan Sicheneder on violin and vocals, and the endless instruments and mind-shattering versatility of Rich Delcamp on banjo/guitar and vocals. No stage party is complete without the style of guitarist Tyler Aukerman, and of course, our amazingly talented rhythm section featuring the University of Toledo Jazz Department’s own Travis Aukerman as well as the Michael Tobias Designs and Bartolini-endorsed artist Matthew Meyers on 6 string bass. Together, Dragon Wagon has reenvisioned American roots, executing everything from traditional bluegrass to jazz-inspired dance-worthy original masterpieces. All of their music thrives on a live audience, and each performance provides a unique and energetic experience. 8

Erik Koskinen

Erik Koskinen’s America Theatre is a translucent eulogy to the genuine. Musically sprouted from the blend of American folk, country, rock-n-roll, and blues, Koskinen and his top-shelf band realize a sound that is distinctive and fresh as well as familiar and classic. From the tender opener “First Time in Years” to the defiant “Six Pack of Beer” to “Boomtown,” a track that flays the history of the west’s settlement from bedrock to fracking with a locomotive’s force of barbwire guitars, marching bass and cracking drums, Koskinen moves the listener through a landscape of personal and social struggles, as well as the small triumphs of our nation and its people.

Erin Coburn

Erin’s passion for music comes out in her smile onstage. She performs across a wide music spectrum– everything from original music, Blues, Classic Rock, Pop, Alternative, and Country. She is an accomplished guitarist and vocalist– and wait until you see her shred on the electric ukulele! Erin has played with Grammy award winning artists in Nashville, placed first in the 2014 Pirates Cove Battle of the Bands, and received full scholarships in 2015 and 2016 to the Pinetop Perkins Foundation Master Guitar workshop in Mississippi. In February 2016, she became part of the Boulder Creek Guitars/Riptide Ukulele endorsed musicians. She thrives on crowds– the bigger the better!

Goldie & the Screamers

Goldie & The Screamers’ sound falls somewhere between the band’s roots in the seductive/dreamy avenues of soul music, and the driving electro/pop/ rock-tinted veins of R&B. With gorgeously crafted originals that call on the ghosts of soul-music-past while also pushing into the future, and inspired renditions of soul/R&B favorites, they something for just about everyone. The band is on a mission to create music that stirs your heart AND your body. With this goal, the Asheville based Soul/Neo Soul outfit have quickly been building a loyal following since their first performance in the Spring of 2014. Bliss welcomes lead vocalist CaroMia back home to Northern Michigan to show us what she and her band can do!

Goldie and the Screamers

The Go Rounds

Kalamazoo’s favorite suns. High energy twang-rock and jelly-roll. The Go Rounds are a furious live act and progressive recording unit, fueled by the history of their diverse lineup and a collaborative spirit injected into everything from songwriting to arranging. Inspired by their record collections as well as the beauty of the Great Lakes State, the band explores soul music, baroque folk, art rock, country and classic rock n’ roll.

Gregory Stovetop

Born and raised in Chelsea, Michigan, and currently hailing from Queens, New York, Gregory Stovetop has earned a devoted cult following that comes from the underground and is quickly making its way up into the airwaves around the world. An electrified Earth Angel, radiating love and passion in an original singular world of sound, Gregory Stovetop is as fluent in Elvis and Johnny Cash as he is in Soundgarden and The Clash. To see him solo is to witness a true rock star bursting with heart and vibrant color, in his essential element. Stovetop’s next album will be co-produced by Dominic Davis and Seth Bernard at La Luna studios in Kalamazoo. Rock and Roll Magic is alive on earth and it is Wild and True, flowing through the one and only Gregory Stovetop. He was born for this. The village is starving - cook and don’t stop, Stovetop.

Harper and Midwest Kind

An amalgamation of blues, soul and world music, multi award-winning Australian singer/songwriter “Peter D. Harper” creates a heady mix of roots music through his creative use of the harmonica and the haunting drone of the didgeridoo. By combining traditional and modern influences and borrowing from Western and World music, Harper has created a highly original take on the roots genre, which many have labeled “World Blues.” Harper has received an amazing 14 Music Awards in four different countries. His innovative use of electronic enhancement and feedback breaks the traditional boundaries of the harmonica, giving his music its distinctive harmonics and effects. The powerful guitar sounds and the unique drone of the didgeridoo create raw yet eerie sonic textures, sounding primal and contemporary at the same time.

Gregory Stovetop

Heather Maloney

Maloney’s new music has a definite edge, but it also has a classically-trained voice, delivering well-crafted lyrics over the technical arrangements—a combination which is receiving mainstream appreciation once more. Suddenly the term “singer-songwriter” is carrying serious weight again. Chalk it up to 90’s revivals and influences like Fiona Apple, Tori Amos and Aimee Mann, whom Maloney refers to as “those bleeding hearts.” According to Maloney, “We wanted to make something more relevant, in a new zone.” She wasn’t kidding – she teamed up with producer Bill Reynolds (who moonlights as the bassist for Band of Horses) and an all-star group of players with extraordinary talent, including engineer Jason Kingsland (Iron & Wine, Delta Spirit), guitarist Tyler Ramsey (Band of Horses), and guitarist and sax player Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket).

The HillBenders

“Ever since I was a young boy I played the silver ball” is maybe not a standard bluegrass lyric, but it is a line known by all the world from the biggest rock opera of all time, The Who’s “Tommy.” Forty-five years after its original release, this classic of classic rock has now been fully realized as a full length bluegrass tribute featuring The HillBenders from Springfield, Missouri. Conceived and produced by SXSW co-founder and longtime musician/producer Louis Jay Meyers, this Bluegrass opry brings a new perspective to “Tommy” while paying total respect to its creators.

Hot Tuna

The name Hot Tuna invokes as many different moods and reactions as there are Hot Tuna fans—millions. To some, Hot Tuna is a reminder of wild and happy times. To others, that name will forever be linked to their own discovery of the power and depth of American blues and roots music. To newer fans, Hot Tuna is a tight, masterful duo on the cutting edge of great music. All of those things are correct. For more than four decades, Hot Tuna has played, toured, and recorded some of the best and most memorable acoustic and electric music ever. And Hot Tuna is still going strong — some would say stronger than ever.

Jaron Freeman-Fox and the Opposite of Everything

Bred in the mountains of Canada’s rural northwest, Jaron Freeman-Fox redefines what the violin is capable of, giving audiences no choice but to take his mutant species of music on its own terms. Having produced and played on over 40 albums (including with Teresa Doyle, Jayme Stone, and Autorickshaw) and toured the globe many times over as a solo artist, bandleader or collaborator with artists such as Delhi 2 Dublin, Ben Caplan, and Sam Lee, Freeman-Fox fuses his roots of fiddling and jazz with his musical studies in India, Sweden, and Indonesia, while playing the 5-string violins of his late mentor, fiddle pioneer Oliver Schroer. During a seemingly endless tour for the past 5 years, Jaron has performed full-time with his award-winning band Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything, as well as with his new experimental duo project, using an expanded-range electroacoustic violin set-up of his own design.

Keller Williams

Those who’ve followed Keller Williams’ recording career to date know that he has given each of his albums a single-syllable title: FREEK, BUZZ, SPUN, BREATHE, LOOP, LAUGH, HOME, DANCE, STAGE, GRASS, DREAM, TWELVE, REX, LIVE, ODD, THIEF, KIDS, BASS, PICK, KEYS, FUNK, VOS, and VAPE. Each title serves not only as a concise summation of the concept guiding the particular project but also as another piece of the jigsaw puzzle that is Keller Williams. GRASS, for example, is a bluegrass recording, cut with the husband-wife duo the Keels, while STAGE is a live album and DREAM is the end product of a wish list: Keller collaborating with some of his greatest musical heroes. His sprawling assortment of music across genres is sure to appeal to all audiences.

Kinobe has given concerts and workshops all over the world, bringing a powerful world-roots-dance sound to festival main stages and theatres as well as intimately captivating solo and acoustic shows that showcase the diversity of the traditional African instruments.

K. Jones and the Benzie Playboys

K. Jones & the Benzie Playboyz are bringing the roots sound of southwest Louisiana’s Creole, Cajun, and Zydeco scene to everyone up in the Great Lakes area. The Playboys are dedicated to keeping the Cajun/Creole music alive with live performances for two-steppin’, waltzing, and smoking red hot zydeco dancing. The 10-button diatonic accordion of K .Jones is the driving force of their music, with Jonah Powell on fiddle. Jamie Bernard is on the drums, and Doug Albright on bass. Mark Stoltz is the man on the scrubboard and tit’fer driving the beat. K. Jones and the Benzie Playboys play some great “old school” Zydeco and Cajun music with traditional instruments for an authentic Louisiana dance experience.

Matt the Electrician

Matt the Electrician is no longer an electrician. He focuses instead on a music career that has spanned the course of two decades, a dozen records, and thousands of shows. He creates folk music for a modern age, rooted in lyrics that focus on the realities and challenges of the 21st century as opposed to, say, the old-school thrill of hopping trains. “I don’t generally write mining disaster songs,” he explains. “I tend to write about things that have happened to me and my family. Songs about the small things in life, which, to me, are really the big things.”

May Erlewine

May plays guitar, fiddle, piano and a few other instruments, but mostly she sings. Her songs show a very real connection and concern with everyday folk and are treasured by people of all faiths and politics. May has played music for people all over the world. The sounds and influences you’ll hear in her music range from good old fashioned folk and country swing to soul singers, rock and music from all over. She is also introducing a new EP! Recorded in March at La Luna studios, Lean Into the Wind offers a fresh batch of songs rich with layers of acoustic tone! Featuring Phil Barry on guitar, Max Lockwood on bass, Laurel Premo on banjo and fiddle, Michael Shimmin on percussion and Seth Bernard guesting on a couple tracks, this EP is short but mighty!

Nathan and Jessie Band

Together, Nathan Rivera and Jessie Andra Smith bring an unforgettable performance! The duo has traveled all over the world on the streets and stages sharing their unique sound. They frequent Mexico and Europe, as well as New Orleans. The fusion of jazzy folk and blues on their National Reso-Phonic guitars and accordion as well as their interesting interplay between female and male vocals make their trilingual performances uplifting and fun, with an uplifting message for people of all ages and cultures.

If you are searching for a fresh, distinctive sound with an element of surprise, the search is over. Oh Brother Big Sister is pure pleasure.

Olivia Millerschin

Clever, witty, melodic, and musically quirky as ever, Olivia Millerschin is feeling a bit “Over The Weather” these days. She has infused her latest EP with all the colorful elements (Indie, Folk, Soul) and wry turns of phrase that made her debut, self-produced album “Yes. No. Maybe So.” so popular and infectious, leading to its nominations for three 2014 Detroit Music Awards and radio play nationwide. Now, the multi-talented singer/songwriter is penning her observational gems from a fresh starting point: 19 years old, one year of college completed and a full year of touring under her belt. The EP’s first single “We Know Not” was produced by Andrew Williams (Colbie Caillat, Five For Fighting). Olivia’s growing songwriting abilities helped in her recent signing with BMG Fieldhouse Licensing.

His gift for songwriting has produced some of the most moving songs from Peter, Paul & Mary, including “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “Day is Done”, “Light One Candle” and “The Great Mandala.” As a member of the renowned musical trio, Yarrow has earned multiple gold and platinum albums, as well as numerous GRAMMYs.

Rebecca Loebe

Rebecca is a young singer-songwriter who grew up in Atlanta and now makes her home in Austin, TX. She is known for her distinct voice, well-crafted songs and ability to bring an audience to her journeys, introducing them to the characters she meets and observations she makes as she travels. Rebecca has toured non-stop since 2009 as a headliner and as support for The Civil Wars, Ellis Paul, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers, Matt the Electrician and others. In 2011 she was a featured contestant on the first season of NBC’s “The Voice,” winning a spot on Team Adam and an iTunes Top 10 single worldwide with her captivating re-imagination of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.” Earlier this year she was ranked #9 on Alternate Root magazine’s annual listing of the 30 Best Female Singers in America.

Seth Bernard

Seth Bernard is a folk musician. He’s a storyteller, a joker, a trickster, a builder of new communities, and a warden of the old communities. He is kind, warm, and welcoming. At times, he’s a road-weary musician, wizened and weathered by a world needing change. Most days, he lives up to, and transcends, all of the myth and legend surrounding him. As a performer, Seth is equally at home playing his introspective, sociallycharged ballads as he is joining a 10-piece electric ensemble on lead vocals, bass, steel or electric guitar. He can shred with the best of them, but also bring it home with stylish, mellow fingerpicking. His singing is intimate and raw, and he brings an unforgettable show wherever he performs.

Steve Poltz

To suggest that Steve Poltz isn’t normal is about as safe a statement as one could make. You would basically require the powers of the Hubble space telescope to locate Steve Poltz from any region of normalcy. For music fans on both sides of the equator, this is a very good thing. Born among the hearty seafaring folk of Canada’s Halifax, Nova Scotia, Poltz has lived most of his life in Southern California, where the sun treated his rocky Canadian DNA like clothes in a dryer. Naturally a spectrum of cultural and emotional tensions arose and he eventually sought refuge in the art of songwriting, where he tapped into an unforgettable and often horrifying depth of unhinged genius.

Taj Weekes and Adowa

That 1 Guy

The String Doctors

Taj Weekes and Adowa

WHO IS TAJ WEEKES? One basic but incomplete answer is that Taj Weekes is a dreadlocked Rastafarian musician, bred in the Caribbean but shaped by intercontinental life experience. A more significant answer would be that he is a creative, poetic singersongwriter who fronts a dynamic reggae band named Adowa. There’s an additional, highly significant answer, just as true as the first two: Taj is an unwavering, energetic humanitarian whose dedication extends beyond his song lyrics into his social activism, an activism that has culminated in his official role with the United Nations as “UNICEF Champion for Children” and his children’s charity, They Often Cry Outreach.

That 1 Guy

With an extensive and amazing track record of unique and imaginative performances featuring his curious instrument and copious amounts of originality, Mike Silverman (aka That1Guy) has set himself apart as a true one-of-a-kind talent that rivals any other artist currently in the entertainment industry. Averaging 150-200 shows a year all over North America and Canada, he has been a consistent favorite at such festivals as: Wakarusa, Electric Forest, Big Day out, All Good, Bella, High Sierra, Summer Meltdown, Montreal Jazz Festival, and many more. He was also the ‘Tap Water Award’ winner at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for best musical act. His legendary collaboration and multiple tours with Buckethead as The Frankenstein Brothers has further cemented his virtuoso story as a creative visionary as well.

The Way Down Wanderers

The String Doctors

The String Doctors is a new group with a few very familiar faces including Joel Mabus with his superb songwriting, multi-instrumental chops and savvy stage presence. Add Ray Kamalay the crooner and jokester with his jazz expertise that lets the boys stretch on old swing material, both sweet and hot. They are joined by two talented fellows who have gathered kudos of their own. Peter Knupfer, on fiddle, has been a popular freelance, award winning and session fiddler wherever he has lived. Top it off with Dave Rosin who brings up the bottom on bass and together they make up The String Doctors, who bring a new kind of country swing to your lives, for your dancing and listening pleasure. And their “Michigan” humor will kill you.

The Way Down Wanderers

Equal parts fast-paced and soulful, The Way Down Wanderers, a 5-piece modern-folk Americana act, draw in listeners with energy, originality and soulful generosity. While playing, performing and writing together for over 2 years, the Wanderers have built an enthusiastic and fast-growing following across the country, earning Deli Magazine’s Readers Choice title of “Chicago’s Best Emerging Artist, 2014.” Youthful and professionally trained, these young men captivate audiences with soaring instrumentals, foot stomping sing-alongs and a lively stage show. They have created a buzz for themselves with their unplugged, off-stage encores and propensity for performing self-titled, “restSTOMPS” - free acoustic sets at rest & truck stops along their tour routes. The band’s debut EP, “Path to Follow” and their brand new live EP, “Wellspring” are available wherever music is sold. The Way Down Wanderers first full-length album is due to release in the Spring or Summer of 2016.

Visit them on the web at www.darkhorsebrewery.com. Founders Brewing Company - Grand Rapids, MI If you’re going to live life, you ought to live it hard, without regrets. brewhouse to support their taproom, Annex, and beer garden. They serve good beer all over Michigan, Chicagoland, and northwest Indiana. Greenbush also boasts the lifetime Friends with Benefits mug club membership, which boasts over 3,500 members. Find out more at www.greenbushbrewing.com *NEW* Beards Brewery - Petoskey, MI Beards Brewery was started by two friends who had a common passion: Beer. At the 14th annual event, their was a spontaneous and synchronistic appearance of a full-sky northern lights show just as main stage music closed after Peter Ostroushko’s performance on Saturday night. The spirits and colors in the sky were so vivid and dynamic that we shut off all the lights on the farm and thousands of us laid on our backs for hours oooowwwing and aaahhhh-ing at the magic in the sky. Best ever northern lights for sure. The Aurora Borealis experience actually inspired the design of both the 1995 and 1996 Blissfest program and T-Shirt logos. OK nuff said now onward and upward! In 1997 the 17th Annual Blissfest featured The Tacky/Trendy Hat Contest for adults and children. The creations that were entered were not only tacky and trendy, but also wild, wacky and beyond. Will remembers that his daughter Creeanna, who was 10 at the time, won in the children’s category with a highly decorated 3-foot high golden cone shaped hat. Perhaps it’s time to revive that contest. The year also saw the construction of our raffle booth and the beginning of our annual festival raffle. We also started our campground monitoring project originally called the Shantineers program. This program eventually evolved into the BlissAssist program we have today. In 1998 at the 18th annual event the Bliss Folkscool and Workshops in the Woods was born. Originally FolksCool was a day-long series of workshops held on the Thursday before the festival that offered hands-on intensive sessions in instrument instruction and making, songwriting, dance and crafts. During the Troubles in 2001(more on that later) we had to temporarily abandon the FolksCool but it was later revived as part of the weekend festival programming. Our dearly departed friend Jane Bean was the inspiration behind the FolksCool concept. The 18th

annual was also the beginning of the Drum Kiva and the end of the Sweat Lodge. Our Drum Kiva was first carved out of the woods for Blissfest 1998 with a center fire circle. That year we held a daily drumming workshop at the kiva, although some epic late night drumming and dancing took place there to establish it as a most popular venue for primal catharsis and returning to the wilds. 1998 was also the year we purchased the adjacent 80 acres and began adding more parking and camping to meet increasing demand as Blissfest was growing at a pretty good clip. The big change for the 19th annual festival in 1999 was the new sound booth for the main stage and the second stage dance floor. The second stage quickly turned into the place for dancing to high energy roots bands that continues today. The 20th annual celebration in 2000 saw the arrival of our now famous farm manager and wizard of the rocks, Rockin’ Roz, the year soon to be know as “Y2K”. Roz went to work completing the drum Kiva stone fireplace, thus making the kiva safer for our dancers and drummers. He also logged his travel times from Petoskey to the farm and back on bicycle or moped to an even 36 hours! Roz’s continues to creatively use the many glacial stones that have emerged on the property to design and build rock wall expressions of his art form all around the property. The 20th annual also saw the debut of Dances of Universal Peace, a joyous multicultural way to touch the spiritual essence within ourselves and others. A very fitting addition to our growing community building experience. The Dances have become a regular part of Blissfest ever since and are now led by The Peaceful Sisters. The 20th also saw the main gate established at its current location and Blissfest purchased it first tractor to make all the farm work easier to accomplish. The 21st Blissfest was also the year that the Blissfest Music Organization was put to a huge test. This period between 2001-2002 in our BlissStory became known as “The Troubles.” We were asked by Emmet Co. to do a land use plan after a neighbor questioned what we thought was a valid festival permit. When we presented to the county and township our vision for how we would like to use of the Blissfest Farm property in the future, some angry neighbors and township residents began stirring the pot, exaggerating and distorting our intent and making claims all the way to festivals every weekend and eventually Blissfest building a Walmart here. Wha!? Many were afraid of

disruption to their quiet and peaceful rural solitude. Even though it was never in our plans to make the festival much larger than it already was or to disrupt life in northern Emmet County. Despite our willingness to negotiate 10 local families decided to sue us and we entered into a nearly two year legal battle. They were called “The Intervenors.” Then Emmet Co. joined the lawsuit against us to protect its Zoning Law. I’ve always remembered the prophetic words of one of the County Commisioners at the time, Jim Harris, saying “You people are victims of you own success”. After threats of an injunction to stop the 21st festival and a protracted battle in the newspapers to win the hearts and minds of the community, much legal wrangling and masterful help from our lawyer Jim Oleson from Traverse City, the Blissfest prevailed. In 2002 the intervenors cut and ran after the judge scolded them and their lawyer for bad form and the community solidly behind the Blissfest. So at the eleventh hour literally one day before the trial was set to begin with the county, Judge Johnsons’s call to the county to negotiate resulted in the now famous consent judgment that allowed the festival to continue. In the end after a cost of over $80,000 in legal fees, great stress and constant meetings and hearings, we came to agreements about size limits for festival crowds, how many days the festival would run and some land use decisions that we all could live with including a conservation easement on much of the property. The year 2002 saw this all settled and behind us. The local Petoskey News Review posted the headline, Strike Up the Band: Blissfest is On! And so it was... The era covered by Lesson 7 of the our BlissStory sees our vision and intentions of bringing music from around the planet with all its beauty and diversity to the people of Michigan continued and getting better and better all the time. Our headliners for 1997 were Dan Hicks and the Acoustic Warriors, the king of Cajun Jo-El Sonnier and Bayou Fever, Kate Mackenzie and Out of the Blue, and the music of Jack Williams.

1998 brought to the Blissfest 18 Main Stage the likes of Jonathan Edwards, Eddie from Ohio, Mezcla from Cuba, Laurie Lewis with Tom Rozum and Marck Schatz, and Rhythm and Shoes. 1999 brought folk music legend Richie Havens to our stage for the first time. Also headlining that year were Billy McLaughlin, The Laura Love Band, and the unforgettable BadaBing BadaBoom from Nashville. 2000 saw another Woodstock legend grace our stage in the form of John Sebastian and the J-Band. Joining Sebastian as headliners that year were John McCutcheon, Buckwheat Zydeco, Kate Wallace, Cucanandy, Josh White, Jr back for his third time and Donna the Buffalo back by popular demand. Also on the bill that year for the first time was a young and clean cut performer named Seth Bernard. 2001 featured such greats as Tom Rush, Irish super group Solas, Sons of the Never Wrong, Corey Harris and the 5X5, Karen Savoca, Barachois and Mountain Heart. The bill that year also included up and coming Michigan stars such Seth Bernard, who in 2001 performed with a 20-year old newcomer named Rachael Davis; and the band Steppin In It, which included a few people you may have heard of like Joshua Davis and Dominic John Davis. The year 2002 saw the one and only Janis Ian take the main stage on Friday night, followed by Carlos Placeres and his band on Saturday night; with Rita Chiarelli, BadaBing BadaBoom (brought back by popular demand) and Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys closing out the festival main stage on Sunday night. Let us not forget some other major and Bliss life changes from Blissfest 22. Many will agree that the creation of the Emmet County Memorial Solar Powered Rustic Showers made life at our sweet little music festival a lot sweeter and cleaner. I swear that project improved attendance by at least 25%! Also that year - continued on page 56

Welcome to the Blissfest Kid’s Area 2015!! Be sure to dog-ear this page in your schedule so you can keep up with the hour by hour fun to be had Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday! The Bliss Kids Area is dreamed up by four Mamas, who get through the long winter months thinking of sunny, happy children and tunes on the wind. It is manned by a troupe of amazing volunteers. We hope that being immersed in a weekend of music and art will excite your imaginations, inspire you to create, tempt you to try different forms of artistic expression, and to have so much fun in the process! Be sure to check out the energetic, kid-centered music line-up at Third Stage for Saturday and Sunday morning 10 am-1 pm. Free-style, creative play activities will be out at the Kids Tent during this time, and the Crafting and Art Projects will begin once the Kids programming is over at 1 pm. Along with music, playthings, and crafts, look out for face painters, Henna artists, balloon benders, magicians, and roving puppeteers! Feel welcome to come to the Family Talent Share on Sunday with a song, skit, trick, joke, or any other amazing thing you may like to share. Also on Sunday is the rocking Kids Parade! We’ll march around the grounds dancing and making noise. The more is always the merrier. Mamas and Daddies, we ask that you stay and experience the Kid’s Area with your children. There is lots of activity and happy chaos, and we don’t want anyone feeling lost or scared. Remember that this is a messy place. Please wear clothing that isn’t shy of paint, dye, glue, glitter, markers, and mud. Parents and Kiddos alike, please be safe, be kind, look out for one another, show respect, be a good example, thank a volunteer, and participate wholeheartedly. Thank you for checking out the Bliss Kid’s Area!

CHRONICLES OF

BLISSFEST

THE CONTINUING STORY - continued from page 33 -

we saw another great venue addition in the form the The Song Tree in the center of the woods. Originally referred to as Sacred Space, the Song Tree was intended to give performers of all kinds an opportunity to express themselves including plenty of open mic time for emerging artists. John Lamb was inspired by a similar space he saw at Kerville Festival... John, Jim and Kirby brainstormed the idea... it wasn’t long before ideas became reality. The Song Tree continues to be a sweet and intimate setting to experience the many gifts of the heart shared at our festival. 2002 was also the first year of the Blissfest Community Choir. Enlisting the participation of anyone who wanted to join, the Blissfest choir got together a couple of time during the festival to learn simple songs with simple harmonies, which were then performed on Sunday morning on main stage. The tradition continues today with the help of TC Sings!.org. If you are interested in joining this year check out the schedule of get togethers at Club Bliss. It was also this year that the simple phrase Goddess Bliss Ya! was to be found stenciled all about the farm. It’s still a mystery who the artist or artists were but the blessing still lives in our hearts and our community. 56

CELEBRATING TRIUMPHS OF THE CREATIVE SPIRIT. Perhaps the most important thing you can do to awaken your own creativity is to support the creativity of others. That’s why we’re so proud to give back to the people and organizations who inspire our artistic side – and we have been since 1962.

Over more than 50 years, Raymond James has become a leading patron of the arts communities and across the country. And today, it’s our privilege to continue that tradition of celebrating the creative spirit alongside you. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

We are proud to support the 35th Annual Blissfest Music Festival!

Blissfest Arts Recreation Center Update Right after last year’s festival, we began to work in earnest to complete the Blissfest Arts Recreation Center permanent camp ground. We broke ground on the permanent campground after finally receiving the DEQ construction permit. The 45 site rustic campground including 25 drive-in and 10 walk-in camp sites plus 10 campground cabins and a sanitation station are components of the camp ground. We are working on some creative designs for our additional cabins. We have the two domes completed with more cabins on the way. We have just about completed the new sanitation station. This is a major component that is required in order for us to get our permanent campground permit. We are real close to the finish line but did not quite get their by festival weekend. If you need you RV pumped, At Your Service Portable Toilets are here on site and to provide that service for you. Blissfest Solar Initiative The new 6KW solar array right next to the Main Stage has been generating solar for a year now. If you want to look at production figures go to this link: www.sunnyportal.com/Login. Login is bliss.solar@gmail.com and password is public2015. We are producing enough annual credits with this new grid tie system to offset the electricity used during the festival. Please take time to encourage the State of Michigan to continue supporting independent solar production. Senate bill SB438 is poised to disincentive individual ownership of solar production and put it in the hands of the corporations. We are also again excited to have our solar trailers that power both the Third Stage and the Michigan Stage. We will also be taking the solar trailers on the road to other events and festivals this summer. New Cabin We have a new cabin underway for our campground. Designed by long time blisster Terry Carolan of Sun Designs, it was constructed off-site as modular units and assembled as a kit at the festival site. We are pleased to add another cool tiny living unit to our list of offerings at the recreation center. Special thanks to Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation for their continued support of the Blissfest Arts Recreation Center. This year they helped fund the new cabin. The Blissfest Arts Recreation Center project and Solar Initiative is supported in part by:the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation

Elyce Fishmann Scholarship Fund: Blissfest provides funding for traditional arts education through the Wheatland Music Organization’s Elyce Fishmann Scholarship fund. www.wheatlandmusic.org 22nd Annual Lamb’s Songwriters Retreat: Blissfest provides scholarships for emerging songwriters to attend this annual event in Harbor Springs and is a primary sponsor for the event. Ukes for Youth and Ukulele Club: Ukes for Youth is a continuing project that is available for schools, community groups and camps in the area. The project has been introducing this folk-arts string program to area youth using the baritone ukulele as the teaching instrument for several years now and has been a great outreach tool. The program is geared for children in 4th-5th grades to adults and will include instrument care, basic cording techniques and song accompaniment. Blissfest also sponsors the Ukes for Youth Ukulele Club at Red Sky Stage, which meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. We share songs, do some group instruction and have lots of fun. Community Organization Arts, Events and Special Projects Supported in 2015/16: We have supported the Robert Emmet Society, Petoskey District Library, Crooked Tree Arts Center, Boyne Stroll the Streets, Petoskey Concerts in the Park, Harbor Springs Street Musique, Readmond Volunteer Firefighters Association, First Night Celebration, Legs Inn, Mackinaw Historical Society, Northern Michigan Cultural Alliance, Indian River Rhythm on the River, Woofstock, Petoskey Festival on the Bay and many other community groups. Affiliations: Blissfest maintains a membership in our local Harbor Springs, Petoskey and Indian River Chambers of Commerce in support of cultural tourism. We are also affiliated with Folk Alliance International, Ontario Conference of Folk Festivals and the Michigan Non-Profit Association.

Retreat Center: The Blissfest Farmhouse is ready to receive guests and artists. Three cabins and two domes are available now, and more cabins will be available next spring. The new campground will be completed right after the festival and be available later this year. Spend some quiet time here at the festival farm with 160 acres to roam and explore. We are booking activities and special events for the 2016 season now. For more information call the office and ask for Jim or visit www.blissfest.org Red Sky Stage: This new venue in downtown Petoskey has fast become a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Red Sky Stage hosts a Blissfest Folk and Roots Mini-Concert series and the new Blissfest Ukulele Club. They have become a popular spot to get together and play music every Sunday with their afternoon Blissfest String Jam, followed by a Jazz Jam Session every Sunday evening. Watch their website for more information about upcoming shows and events www. redskystage.com
