N U R S E RY I S T H E S TA R T O F THE SCHOOL JOURNEY We believe that The Early Years are of vital importance and the ethos of the School begins in the Foundation Stage. Early entry to Maldon Court School Nursery ensures that your child has the very best start to their learning journey. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. We are delighted that in May 2017, The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) rated our EYFS as OUTSTANDING in all areas.
Our bright and cheerful Nursery is housed in secure, purpose–built premises within the grounds of Maldon Court Preparatory School. The Nursery provides a safe and nurturing environment for Foundation Stage children, whilst remaining part of the school community. Nursery children attend School assemblies and have regular access to the school hall and other facilities. The Nursery is always buzzing with purposeful activity, as the youngest children discover that learning is enjoyable and school is a happy place to be. Children are given the opportunity to learn new skills through activities such as messy play, role play, dressing up, puzzles and games.

PRE-RECEPTION & PREP SCHOOL RECEPTION Following on from the Nursery years, Pre-Reception is the next stage of your child’s education. Practical activities enhance the children’s growing ability to make sense of the world through exploration, experimentation, observation and discussion. As they grow in confidence and independence, creative and physical play are seamlessly interwoven with more structured learning.The emphasis in these years is on all-round development and the ‘paired and shared’ key worker system reinforces relationships between children, parents and staff. Every child in our PreReception benefits from our excellent staff-to-child ratio, experienced and caring staff and a secure learning environment all located within the Prep School building. Children leave our Pre-Reception as confident learners, who are fully prepared for the seamless transition to full time education in Reception.
Pre-Reception can operate on a sessional basis but parents are encouraged to book their children in for full days. This exposure allows children to gain full advantage of the daily timetable and to help prepare them for the full days they will encounter once in Reception class. The Reception class is the next stage in your child’s learning journey. Children in the Reception class are encouraged to develop their listening and speaking skills, to use technology, to take on responsibilities and to look at life beyond the School. While close attention is paid to literacy and numeracy, great emphasis is also placed on personal, social and emotional development. With these strong foundations, children move on to the next stage of their education as confident and sociable young people, proudly equipped with new skills and eager to use them!
The Pre-Reception day runs alongside the Prep School day and parents can also choose to take advantage of our Wrap Around Care provision.

P R E P A R AT O RY S C H O O L Secure in the company of their friends and familiar with life at Maldon Court, the children make a seamless transition into the Prep School, where they are introduced to a broad-based, varied curriculum, that develops as they grow and learn. The atmosphere is happy and purposeful, class sizes are small, and close supervision is maintained. Alongside the core subjects of English and Mathematics, the timetable includes the Humanities, Foreign Languages, Science and Technology, The Arts, Physical Education and PSHEE. In all areas of the curriculum, strong emphasis is placed on creativity, personal, social and emotional development, language and communication. We strive to motivate and challenge our pupils in both in the classroom and in the wider locality.
English and Mathematics are taught by class teachers. The overarching aim in English is to promote high standards of language and literacy by ensuring pupils have a strong command of the spoken and written word. Throughout all the year groups Mathematics is linked with other areas of the curriculum, particularly Science, Geography and ICT.
Progress is carefully monitored in all subjects to ensure that pupils are receiving the appropriate support. Expectations and standards in the classroom are high. Older children are encouraged to take on increased responsibility for their work and conduct, as well as leadership roles. Our curriculum is enhanced and enriched by additional subjects such as Art, Physical Education, Music and Drama. We think that art is an essential component of a well-rounded education and we aim to nurture and enhance all artistic ability. Art is taught in small classes, where children are encouraged to be creative. We provide opportunities to experiment with painting, drawing, printing, textiles and clay, which allows children to discover and develop a wide range of skills. At Maldon Court, Physical Education is taught from Nursery through to Form 6. We provide an opportunity for pupils to enjoy a variety of sporting activities, which form an integral part of school life. We aim for high levels of physical fitness and co-ordination, to foster confidence and encourage participation at all levels. As the children progress through their school years, they will learn and practice skills from many different sports including: tag rugby, netball, hockey, athletics, cross country and cricket.

We think that music is also hugely important in the life of the school and pupils are introduced to a wide range of music, through listening, performing and composing. Pupils of all ages are encouraged to sing in the choir, play an instrument and perform at events both inside and outside the school. In addition, individual music lessons are available.The emphasis at Maldon Court is on fun, enjoyment and appreciation! At Maldon Court all children are involved in drama, using games, exercises and improvisation to develop imagination and virtuosity. Confidence is developed through performance and the school ensures that every child is involved in a drama or musical performance during the year. The Prep School drama or musical production, which is performed to an audience of parents, friends and family members, is always a highlight!
E XC ITI NG E X TR A - CU RR ICU L AR ACTIVITIES & FLE XIB LE W R A PA RO U N D C H I L DC A R E Our after-school and sports clubs provide a variety of activities for your child to enjoy. Activities including Lego, drama, choir and gymnastics, take place both during lunch clubs and after school clubs. There is no charge for most of the clubs, which cater for different year groups throughout the week.
In addition, we have developed a programme of flexible wraparound childcare solutions, from 7.30 until 6pm, Monday to Friday, to fit in with your busy life, and to suit your specific requirements. Breakfast Club runs from 7.30 until 8.30am, when the normal school day starts. We also offer after school wraparound care until 6pm, either from the end of the school day or when a school club finishes. Homework Club is available for Prep pupils until 4.30pm and is supervised by a member of staff who is fully conversant with each year groups’ homework diaries. All provision is carefully supervised and available on a regular or ad-hoc basis, which means that children can attend different sessions on different days. H I S T O RY, C O M M U N I T Y I N T E G R AT I O N & S TRO N G LOC A L TI E S As well as taking advantage of the rich local history by integrating it into projects within the curriculum, pupils take an active part in many local events connected with the Church and the wider community. These include: Harvest Festival, Carol Service, Remembrance Sunday and visits by the school (choir) to the local hospital and residential nursing homes. We place great importance on this aspect of school life and our pupils are always encouraged to take part in activities that enhance their holistic education.
Maldon Court is quite unique in that in over 60 years of education it has had just five Headteachers and three owners. It remains one of the few proprietorial schools in the country and remains true to the original vision and ethos that has been prominent since 1956. Situated in the historic market town of Maldon in Essex, the school is surrounded by buildings dating back to the 11th century. There is a very strong sense of community in the area and we are proud of the academic, civic and social role our school plays in the life of the town.
