Introduction In this booklet you will read complex thoughts I developed in this process. It represents the twists and turns in thoughts, I came across while writing. There are interpretations of images and my thoughts related to them. This book consists of all the work that developed my writing and imagination skills during our foundation course at CEPT.

Design and History Bernhard E. Burdek The text outlines the history of industrial design. It begins with Virtuvius’s three principles of design, strength, functionality and beauty. Nineteenth century saw the rise of reductionist furniture and was marked as an era of mass production and new materials. Functionalism was considered a modern aspect with the industrial revolution, some designers focused on the functional aspects and constructive methods while others did on utilitarianism and functions of form. At this time, William Morris tried to revitalize arts and crafts but failed. It also talks about Bauhaus and the major impact they had on design at that time, they were expressing art on one hand and representing industrial and product standardization on the other. The aim of Bauhaus was to bring together art and technology to achieve social coalescence and aesthetics of design. The Bauhaus period was divided into three phases, the Founding, Consolidation and the Disintegration Phase. But his designs influenced only the intellectuals and not the masses. The most significant new institute was Ulm School of Design, it had great influence on theory, practice and teaching of design and is talked about in direct comparison with that of the Bauhaus.

Title: Building Utopia Author: Tim Benton In the 20th century, the rise of modernism started, where buildings looked similar without ornamentation, not symmetrical and having flat roofs. Most of the modernist buildings depicted artistic formalism but lacked ornamentation. Most modernists focused that their work was towards affordable housing. The main concept applied to modernists was functionalism, which states that the buildings should be identified by the use and purpose with a wide social application. Formalism was different from functionalism, these two became the strands of modernism and had differences in their ideologies of design and architecture. There were talks and arguments arousing that this would lead to standardization of forms. Around the same time, the zeitgeist idea was also becoming popular, which is an invisible force dominating the characteristics of a given period. Its intention was to contribute to the revolution of design and not just respond to the needs of the masses. In addition to this a spiritual aspect was introduced which talked about ambition to make art and revaluation of all the values. Also with the upcoming of Avant-garde groups, choices were to be made individualism, aesthetic control and functional solutions.

One evening Mit comes up with a crazy idea of writing that encloses all his scribblings and random thoughts in a book. It should be the best book that would represent his thought process. The only problem is Mit is not that confident at writing. And so here he starts his journey to write “Zen in the art of writing” and overcome this nervousness.
You fail only if you stop writing
