C O N G R AT U L AT O R Y L E T T E R S As Superintendent of schools, I am excited to have the Central Junior High Band represent the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District at the 2019 Midwest International Band & Orchestra Conference. It has been 20 years since one of our groups performed at this prestigious event. The students, under the direction of Christine Cumberledge and assistant director Nicholas Wilson, have distinguished themselves as musicians of merit and have combined their individual talents to create something bigger than themselves, the award-winning Central Junior High Band. It is the district’s belief that music is an important part of educating the whole child, and it is through the study of music that students sharpen their memory, learn teamwork, practice discipline, and find a creative outlet. The study of music also provides the opportunity for students to broaden their horizons of appreciation for an important dimension in our culture. The magic of music education is that it can spark a child’s imagination and ignite a lifetime of passion. I hope you enjoy today’s concert.

Steven A. Chapman

Superintendent, HEB ISD

Your selection honors the time and dedication of each student and the tremendous leadership of Director Christine Cumberledge and Assistant Director Nicholas Wilson. Performing in the 73rd Midwest Clinic is a great accolade and the rigorous selection process validates the talent of the Central Junior High School Band. You are to be commended for your commitment to excellence and we know you will represent our district well. We hope you enjoy your time in Chicago and know that we are so very proud of you all.

Joe Harrington, Ed.D.

Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Administration, HEB ISD

To Those Attending Today’s Concert: On behalf of Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District and the Department of Visual & Performing Arts, we welcome you to this performance by the Central Junior High Band. It is our great honor to perform at the 2019 Midwest International Band & Orchestra Conference. It was 1999 when a group from Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD last performed on this stage and we are very grateful to be selected to perform this year. Under the direction of Christine Cumberledge, and assisted by Nicholas Wilson, this group is commended for their pursuit of musical achievement at a very high level. These students represent a very diverse campus where young musicians from cultures around the world and from every economic background, play in band not only for the joy of performing music, but to be a part of something beyond themselves. Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD practices the belief that We Educate the Whole Child. The study of music, in fact all the visual and performing arts, is a crucial component of the overall learning process in a child’s life. We believe these students not only receive a high quality, comprehensive education, but they learn beyond the classroom in dimensions of a global culture, an attitude of service, and being a part of a family that will remain important to them for a lifetime. Thank you for attending this concert today. We hope that you will leave this hall with a song in your heart to share with all you encounter as these young musicians have inspired you today. Thank you for supporting music education and music performance in a global arena. Musically,

Mark A. Chandler

To the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic: On behalf of the students, faculty, and administration of Central Junior High, we are honored that the Central Junior High Symphonic Band has been selected to perform at the 2019 Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference. Central Junior High and Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD have a rich history of outstanding performance in the Fine Arts. Our district and community have a long held belief that student lives are enriched through the Arts. The band program under the direction of Christine Cumberledge (Director) and Nicholas Wilson (Assistant Director) provides an experience that is truly World Class. Observing the CJH Band system from the very beginning when directors are helping 6th graders select instruments, to now, I am always amazed. The band experience is a special part of our campus. We are thankful for the generous financial support of our community sponsors, CJH band families, and our district administration to deliver a dream experience for seventy-one 8th and 9th grade students at Central Junior High. These students and directors have committed to summer, early morning, late afternoon, weekend, and vacation rehearsals and clinics in a dedicated effort to highlight their talent, our school, and Hurst Euless Bedford Community. Thank you Midwest Clinic for allowing the Central Junior High Band the opportunity to display what I believe is the hardest working junior high band in the state of Texas. Their commitment to excellence and continual growth as musicians makes for a proud principal. Sincerely,

Randy Belcher

Principal, Central Junior High

ABOUT CENTRAL JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Central Junior High School is located west of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District. Central Junior High was named the #1 Most Diverse Public Middle School in Texas based on demographic data from the U.S. Department of Education. The school has over 1,200 students and 63% of the population is economically disadvantaged. Almost 70% of the students participate in band, orchestra or choir. Also, Central Junior High is the only junior high school in the district to offer instruction in five languages (Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, and French), a STEM Robotics & Engineering program in the 7th grade and advanced Pre-AP classes. Central Junior High is also unique among HEB ISD junior highs in that students are zoned to attend one of the two high schools, L.D. Bell High School and Trinity High School. HEB ISD serves over 23,000 students. Students attend elementary (grades K-6,) junior high (grades 7-9,) and high school (grades 10-12.) Over 325 children are a part of the Central Junior High Band. Instruction in band begins in 7th grade where students meet in homogeneous classes daily for 45 minutes. After the beginner year, students in 8th and 9th grade are placed into one of three performing bands. All three bands combine to form our pep band for community performances. Each performing band meets during the school day, and students also attend a one-hour instrument-specific sectional before or after school once a week. The 8th and 9th grade members perform a fall, winter, and spring concert. The beginners perform in the winter and spring concerts. As individual musicians, the band consistently earns the highest number of junior high positions in the district and region bands. Over 95% of all band members participate in the solo and ensemble contests. The top performing ensemble is comprised of second and third year players. The band program has a long tradition of excellence and consistently earn the highest ratings at competition. Central Junior High was the last BBB Honor Band to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association annual conference.

PROGRAM NOTES

FLYING FORTRESS A Fanfare for Band • Robert W. Smith Flying Fortress was inspired by the historic and legendary Boeing B-17 aircraft. Beginning with a powerful timpani statement, the brass section responds with a resonant introductory theme. Strong melodic lines and woodwind flourishes create a sense of motion throughout. This fanfare for band by Robert W. Smith was dedicated to his father-in-law Roy Benton Hawkins, a B-17 tail gunner who served in WWII and flew missions over Europe. Robert W. Smith is one of the most popular and prolific composers in America today. He has over 600 publications in print with the majority composed and arranged through his long association with Warner Bros. Publications and the Belwin catalog. Mr. Smith is the President/CEO of RWS Music Company, exclusively distributed through C. L. Barnhouse. In addition, he is currently teaching in the Music Industry program at Troy University in Troy, Alabama.

THE RUSTY BUCKET And Other Juke Joints • Carol Brittin Chambers The Rusty Bucket (and Other Juke Joints) was commissioned by the Texas Lutheran University School of Music, to be premiered at the 2014 Summer Music Academy. Traditional Southern folk dance music, “old-time music,” is almost always played on live acoustic instruments, involving some combination of a fiddle, banjo, guitar, and perhaps piano and bass. The typical Southern “barn dance” utilizes fairly structured dances which progress through specific patterns sung out by a caller. “Juke Joint” is actually a vernacular term for a smaller, informal establishment of the mid-1800s that featured music, dancing and drinking in the Southeastern United States. Classic juke joints often catered to the African-American rural work force that began to emerge after the emancipation. The Rusty Bucket is an Americana piece in the style of a reel meant to portray the liveliness and fun of an old-time dance. Carol Brittin Chambers is currently on the music faculty at Texas Lutheran University. She lives in San Antonio, Texas, where she is the owner and composer of Aspenwood Music. She also maintains an active performance schedule, including appearances with the Mid-Texas and San Antonio Symphonies. Before coming to TLU, Mrs. Chambers taught middle school and high school band for many years in the North East Independent School District, San Antonio, Texas.

CAVERNS OF SONORA The Secret Cave • William Owens Abounding in mystery and majesty, the Caverns of Sonora in southwestern Texas are recognized as one of the most spectacular and significant cave systems in the world. Best known for a stunning assemblage of crystal formations, the caves remain quite alive with formations still developing. This work is an engaging musical homage to this beauteous gift of nature. The opening is slow and mysterious, exuding feelings of intrigue as to what secrets the caves may hold. Suddenly becoming brisk in tempo, a somber melody gradually grows into a powerful statement. While driving percussion and dark harmonies now drive the music, the feeling of mystery remains throughout. William Owens received his Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1985 from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. A seasoned music educator, Mr. Owens is active as a composer, conductor, and clinician throughout the United States. Mr. Owens has written numerous commissioned and published works for middle school and high school concert bands.

ON A HYMNSONG OF PHILIP BLISS • David R. Holsinger On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss is a radical departure of style of this composer. The rapid tempos and ebullient rhythms we associate with Holsinger are replaced with a restful, gentle, and reflective composition based on the 1876 Philip Bliss - Horatio Spafford hymn, “It is Well with my Soul.” Written to honor the retiring Principal of Shady Grove Christian Academy, On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss was presented as a gift from the SGCA Concert Band to Rev. Steve Edel in May of 1989. David R. Holsinger received his Bachelor of Music degree from Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri in 1967, and Master of Music degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg in 1974. Mr. Holsinger’s compositions have won competitions sponsored by Kent State University and the National Federation of Music Clubs. Mr. Holsinger is a prolific and award-winning composer as well as a well known clinician and conductor. He currently teaches composition and conducting at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee.

THRILL RIDE • Brian Balmages Thrill Ride allows fear, anxiety, adrenaline, and a sheer rush of excitement to take center stage in this musical depiction of a roller coaster ride. As many weary riders know, there is a certain amount of anxiety that people feel while waiting in line and hearing people scream. The opening slow section captures that feeling and builds as the rider gets closer and closer to the front of the line. Percussion then simulates the life hill (the mechanism that pulls the cars up the initial hill) before the ride “officially” begins and riders race down the first hill and into a series of drops, turns, and loops. Thrill Ride was commissioned by the Veterans Elementary School Band (Ellicott City, Maryland) and their conductor Tim Viets.

PROGRAM NOTES

(Cont.) Brian Balmages is an award-winning composer, conductor, producer, and performer. He received his bachelor’s degree in music from James Madison University and his master’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida. Currently, he is Director of Instrumental Publications of The FJH Music Company and Assistant Director of Bands and Orchestras at Towson University.

DOWN TO THE RIVER • Michael Sweeney The origin of the traditional American folk song Down to the River to Pray (also known as Down in the River to Pray) is unclear, but it is thought to have been composed by an African American slave. As with many spirituals, it is likely this song contained coded messages related to escaping from slavery, such as walking “in the river” to avoid leaving a scent for tracking dogs. There is an element of sadness portrayed in the music, but also a glimmer of hope as the slaves longed for freedom and being reunited with family and friends. Michael Sweeney is currently Director of Band Publications for Hal Leonard LLC in Milwaukee, WI, one of the largest publishers of printed music in the world. In addition, he contributes as a composer and arranger in all instrumental areas, and is particularly known for his writing at the younger levels for concert band and jazz. Mr. Sweeney is a 1977 graduate of Indiana University (Bloomington), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music education and studied composition. Prior to working for Hal Leonard he was a band director in Ohio and Indiana, working with successful concert, jazz and marching programs at all levels from elementary to high school.

EXTRAORDINARY MACHINES OF CLOCKWORK AND STEAM • Scott Watson This imaginative piece brings the magical sounds of steampunk as you enter the world of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, and others whose fascinating, limitless view of the future - from a Victorian vantage point presenting all sorts of fanciful contraptions, forward-looking modes of transportation, time travel, weaponry and more! Two themes alternate, one conveying the wonder of these futuristic marvels (and the mysterious “laboratoriums” where they are hatched). A second raucous, energetic theme portrays the steam, gears, sprockets, and pulleys mechanically powering them. The unique sonic palette includes minor “cabaret” harmonies, evocative toy percussion (ratchet, brake drum, siren whistle) and vocal “steam” sounds from wind players. Commissioned by the Clayton High School (NJ) Concert Band, David Dashefsky, Director. Scott Watson has taught instrumental and elective music in the Parkland School District (Allentown, PA) for more than 30 years and serves as adjunct professor for Cairn University, University of the Arts and Moravian College (in the Philadelphia area), as well as for Central Connecticut State University’s Summer Music Institute. Mr. Watson is an exclusive composer for Alfred Publications, a contributor to the Sound Innovations concert band series, and an Alfred Clinician.

WEEDS • Michael Lee/Preston Lewis Adapted by Gabe Musella & Brandon Steber In Michael Lee’s words, “When my wife and I moved into our house, I imagined the overgrown weeds in the backyard being our future children playing. I grabbed my guitar and the words to Weeds just flowed. It was meant to be.” Weeds is an up-tempo soul number with a hit-single horn section hook that almost crosses over into pop/rock territory. It combines slick retro elements with a timeless sentiment expressed in a way anyone can understand. It makes the personal universal. Gabe Musella, has taught for over twenty years in the Texas public schools. A graduate of Texas Tech University, he holds a B.M. in Composition and M.M. in Conducting. Mr. Musella is also an active composer with published works for band, orchestra, percussion ensemble, and chamber groups. His affiliations include ASCAP, TMEA, TBA, TMAA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Beta Mu, and the Texas Tech Band & Orchestra Camp. Gabe, Alice, and their son, Alex, reside in the Houston suburb of Tomball. Weeds was commissioned by the Central Junior High Band in honor of their Midwest Performance.

SLEIGH RIDE • Leroy Anderson Arr. James D. Ployhar In Leroy Anderson’s words, “I began Sleigh Ride in the summer of 1946 in a cottage in Woodbury, Connecticut, where my wife and I were spending the summer with our 18-month-old daughter. The original version began with what later became the middle section. I recall working on it in the middle of a heat wave, so there is no basis for the music except the title itself. I had felt that the original theme of Sleigh Ride was not strong enough to start the number but would make a good middle section. I finally worked out a satisfactory main theme, introduction and coda and finished the score on February 10, 1948. Sleigh Ride was first performed on May 4, 1948 in Symphony Hall, Boston as an extra at a Pops concert conducted by Arthur Fiedler. Lyrics by Mitchell Parish were added in 1950.” James Ployhar was an American music educator and film producer. Mr. Ployhar attended Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota. He also originated the Fargo Big Band All-Stars, a musical group that frequently performed in and around Fargo, North Dakota. Mr. Ployhar taught nineteen years in the public schools and was enthusiastically welcomed throughout the United States and Canada as a clinician and conductor. He was considered to be one of the most prolific writers in the field of music education.

MICHAEL LEE SINGER/SONGWRITER

Michael Lee is a Fort Worth based blues artist. Raised around blues music his entire life, Michael spent the majority of his young life in blues clubs receiving an Ivy League education from watching and playing with blues legends such as Andrew “Jr Boy” Jones (Freddie King), Buddy Whittington (John Mayall), and Lucky Peterson (Willie Dixon). Michael has been a professional musician for 13 years playing across the country, performing up to 250 shows a year. In 2018, he was a contestant on NBC’s The Voice during the 15th season. His first formal training in music was beginning band learning alto saxophone from Christine Cumberledge. He is a graduate of L.D. Bell High School, where he was a proud member of the Blue Raider Band. Using the skills he learned in band, he taught himself to play guitar and sing. On nights he was not in the blues clubs, he was down in the stockyards soaking in the Country sounds which emanated from those honky tonks. Like Delbert McClinton and many Fort Worth musicians before him, Michael’s style of music has the perfect blend of Blues and Country. Michael is currently touring the country with the B.B. King Blues Band as the featured artist. This past summer, he released a self-titled album on Ruf Records to critical acclaim. The album features original songs, as well as collaborations with friend and mentor, Jacob Furr. It has received critical acclaim from notable sources such as Blues Rock Review and Rolling Stone Magazine. Reviews of his album call him a “triple-threat performer who can sing, play, and write songs on the professional level.” Michael currently lives with his wife Michelle, a teacher, in the Fort Worth area.

SPECIAL THANKS TO. . .

The 2018-2019 Central Junior High Symphonic Band Members: Your talent, hard work, and determination made our performance possible. Thank you for raising the bar! The 2019-2020 Central Junior High Symphonic Band: I am so proud of the way you encourage each other and have become a family in such a short time. You have worked hard and are amazing ambassadors for our district. I am proud of you! The Band Parents: The work ethic you instill in your children is a large part of our success. Thank you for all the behind the scenes work that made this process special! Nicholas Wilson: You are a great teammate and I cannot imagine going through this process with a better work partner… even if you steal all my jokes and deliver them better than me. HEB ISD School Board and Executive Leadership Team: Thank you for your commitment to educating the whole child. The support given without hesitation will make this trip lifechanging for our students. I cannot imagine a better place to work and send my child to school. Stacy and Caidyn Cumberledge: Thank you for sharing me with the Central Band and listening to me talk only about band for the last five months. I appreciate your patience and love you! The Coaches of Central Junior High: I appreciate your support and always putting the many students we share first. Your willingness to move a game, drive a band bus, or share practice time because it is best for the kids is a model for every school. The Teachers and Staff at Central Junior High: Thank you for attending our concerts, listening to individuals play, and your continued support of the

amazing fine arts programs at Central. I am proud to work alongside you. Melodianne Mallow: Thank you for pushing us out of our comfort zone and making us better! You are a wonderful mentor to our band program and a great friend! Mark Chandler: Thank you for being such a wonderful advocate for the arts. Every student in our district benefits from your passion and expertise. Micki Blume, Carol Marlow, and Jennifer Nixon: I am so thankful for your ability to organize, multi-task, and generally keep me together! From proofreading programs to the equally important chocolate stash behind your desk – you keep me sane! I am in awe of your skills. Randy Belcher: You are an amazing principal whose high standards for teachers are only surpassed by the standards you have for yourself. Thank you for stopping by the band hall (and every other room in the building) almost every day. You have pushed me to become a better teacher. Van Mathews and Mario Casanova: I appreciate the time and support you give the Central Band Program. I benefit as much as the students when you are in our rehearsals. We are better because of you! Jaime Esposito: Your energy and enthusiasm has created a percussion culture at Central Junior High. Thank you for making me smile and laugh when you are here! Darrell Fife: You are an HEB ISD hidden treasure. The time you give to the L.D. Bell Marching Band and Central Junior High is amazing. Thank you for saying, “Yep, we can do that!” to every request and crazy idea I come up with. My Private Lesson Staff: I could not imagine a better group of people to help build our young musicians. You give so

freely of your time and talent above and beyond what is expected. I appreciate the advice, the friendship, and the occasional emergency Starbucks runs. We are so lucky to have you on our campus. Richard Stephens and Benjamin Aune: The years we spent building the Central Junior High Band Program together have helped lead us here! Thank you for being such great friends and teammates. I am proud of the success you have built in your own band programs. Alan Olmos: Having you as a student teacher this semester has been a blessing! Your attention to detail and ability to “get it done” will make you an asset to any band program. You will be a great band director! Missy Saunders and Cristina Wisner: I appreciate you sharing your time and talent to make more than a program, but a keepsake for our families.
