CONGRATULATIONS
As Superintendent of Schools, I am excited to have the Central Jr. High Band represent the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District at the 2021 TMEA Conference. It is a great honor to perform for music educators across Texas. The students, under the direction of Christine Cumberledge and assistant director Elayna Youngson, have distinguished themselves as musicians of merit and have combined their individual talents to create something bigger than themselves, the award winning Central Jr. High Band. It is the district’s belief that music is an important part of educating the whole child, and it is through the study of music that students sharpen their memory, learn teamwork, practice discipline, and find a creative outlet. The study of music also provides the opportunity for students to broaden their horizons of appreciation for an important dimension in our culture. The magic of music education is that it can help spark a child’s imagination or ignite a lifetime of passion. I hope you enjoy the Central Junior High performance.
2021 TMEA Conference: On behalf of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District, I would like to congratulate the Central Junior High School Symphonic Band on being selected to participate in the Texas Music Educators Association. Your selection honors the time and dedication of each student and the tremendous leadership of Director Christine Cumberledge and Assistant Director Elayna Youngson. Performing at the TMEA Conference, whether in person or virtual, is a great accolade and the rigorous selection process validates the talent of the Central Junior High School Band. You are to be commended for your commitment to excellence and we know you will represent our district well. Please know that we are so very proud of you all. Break a leg! Sincerely,
JOE HARRINGTON

To the Texas Musical Educators Association:
Superintendent, HEB ISD
Welcome to Today’s Concert: On behalf of Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District and the Department of Visual & Performing Arts, we welcome you to this performance by the Central Junior High Band. It is our great honor to perform for this 2021 TMEA Conference. It has been a very challenging year for all educational processes, especially for the Performing Arts groups. By our very nature, an ensemble has to meet together, share the learning and appreciate the joy of music through performance. This environment has presented many challenges. Rising to meet and exceed those challenges, the Central Junior High Band continues to lead the way in keeping all the components of making music together relevant in the lives of these students. Under the direction of Christine Cumberledge, and assisted by Elayna Youngson, this group is commended for their pursuit of musical achievement at a very high level. These students represent a very diverse campus where young musicians from cultures around the world and from every economic background, play in band not only for the joy of performing music, but to be a part of something beyond themselves. Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD practices the belief that We Educate the Whole Child. The study of music, in fact all the visual and performing arts, is a crucial component of the overall learning process in a child’s life. We believe these students not only receive a high quality, comprehensive education, but they learn beyond the classroom in dimensions of a global culture, an attitude of service, and being a part of a family that will remain important to them for a lifetime. Thank you for attending this concert today. We hope that this virtual concert experience will leave you with a song in your heart to share with all you encounter as these young musicians have inspired you today. Thank you for supporting music education and music performance in Texas. Musically,
MARK A. CHANDLER
Director of Visual & Performing Arts, HEB ISD
On behalf of the students, faculty, and administration of Central Junior High, we are honored that the Central Junior High Symphonic Band has been selected to perform at the 2021 TMEA Virtual Conference. Central Junior High and HurstEuless-Bedford ISD have a rich history of outstanding performance in the Fine Arts. Our district and community have a long held belief that student lives are enriched through the Arts. The CJH band program under the direction of Christine Cumberledge (Director) and Elayna Youngson (Assistant Director) provides an experience that is truly World Class. Observing the CJH Band system from the very beginning when directors are helping students select instruments, to now, I am always amazed. The band experience is a special part of our campus. The students and directors have commited to early morning and late afternoon rehearsals. Their talent highlights our school and the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Community. I am proud of the hard work and dedication of each and every member of our band program and thankful for the contribution they make in showcasing our school. The accomplishment of this group would not be possible without the support students and our campus receives from our families. Families also must commit to hours of practice time required for students to reach their potential as musicians. The parent support group spends countless hours volunteering to support our band and school. To our parents and families we say thank you for investing in our campus and your students. Thank you TMEA Virtual Conference for allowing the Central Junior High Band the opportunity to display what I believe is the hardest working junior high band in the state of Texas. Their commitment to excellence and continual growth as musicians makes for a proud principal. Sincerely,
RANDY BELCHER
Principal, Central Junior High
ABOUT H-E-B ISD
CENTRAL JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Central Junior High School is located west of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District. Central Junior High was named the #1 Most Diverse Public Middle School in Texas based on demographic data from the U.S. Department of Education. The school has over 1,200 students and 63% of the population is economically disadvantaged. Almost 70% of the students participate in band, orchestra or choir. Also, Central Junior High is the only junior high school in the district to offer instruction in five languages (Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, and French), a STEM Robotics & Engineering program in the 7th grade and advanced Pre-AP classes. Central Junior High is also unique among HEB ISD junior highs in that students are zoned to attend one of the two high schools, L.D. Bell High School and Trinity High School. HEB ISD serves over 23,000 students. Students attend elementary (grades K-6,) junior high (grades 7-9,) and high school (grades 10-12.) Junior High is grade 7-9 and the first time students can join band. Band in the high school is grade 10-12. Over 325 children are a part of the Central Junior High Band. Instruction in band begins in 7th grade where students meet in homogeneous classes daily for 45 minutes. After the beginner year, students in 8th and 9th grade are placed into one of three performing bands. All three bands combine to form our pep band for community performances. Each performing band meets during the school day, and students also attend a one-hour instrument-specific sectional before or after school once a week. The 8th and 9th grade members perform a fall, winter, and spring concert. The beginners perform in the winter and spring concerts. As individual musicians, the band consistently earns the highest number of junior high positions in the district and region bands. Over 95% of all band members participate in the solo and ensemble contests. The top performing ensemble is comprised of second and third year players. The band program has a long tradition of excellence and consistently earn the highest ratings at competition. Central Junior High was the last BBB Honor Band to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association annual conference. Last year, the Central Junior High Band was one of three invited performers at The Midwest International Clinic in Chicago, Il.
The Hurst-Euless-Bedford Indpendent School District has a long reputation for excellence in all areas of the Visual & Performing Arts. HEB ISD believes with the guidance of a world-class faculty at every level, students learn life skills such as teamwork, service, leadership, citizenship, and stewardship. In short, the Visual and Performing Arts programs in HEB ISD grow students who will be advocates and patrons of The Arts.

WHERE WORDS END… B Y : R A N D A L L D . S TA N D R I D G E
Sometimes, music is not “about” anything. It exists solely for the beautiful sounds it creates and the emotions derived from that aesthetic experience. Where Words End… falls firmly into this category of music. This expressive piece makes creative use of the ranges and colors available for young bands to create a truly remarkable new work for students and directors alike. “Where words end, music begins…”. This piece greatly conveys this message by pushing and pulling the phrases with dynamic changes. By establishing a nostalgic feeling, this piece presents a simplistic melody that goes throughout the instrumentation in the ensemble.
FANFARE FOR ‘OUR TIME’ BY: TYLER S. GRANT
Fanfare for ‘Our Time’ was composed for the bands at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta, Georgia. Tyler wrote this piece in his first year as their Director of Bands. The school was commemorating its 60th anniversary and the unveiling of a new building campaign. In celebrating the past and looking towards the future, the anniversary theme was “Our Time.” It was Tyler’s hope that all groups who play this piece will reflect in the same way and push towards new horizons, it is “your time” now. Tyler has dedicated this piece to the students at the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Bands. Mr. Grant mentions that he has been fortunate to compose many works for students over the past several years, so it is particularly special to compose something for his own students who bring him such joy every day. Tyler S. Grant (b. June 23, 1995) is an Atlanta-based composer for concert bands, marching bands and chamber groups; his pieces have been performed around the world and by musicians of all levels. His works for wind band have been found on Editor’s Choice lists from various international music distributors. His work Panoramic Fanfare was named a winner in the 2014 “Call for Fanfares” Competition hosted by the Dallas Wind Symphony which has since been performed by collegiate and professional ensembles across North America and Europe. Notable performance venues of his work include The Midwest Clinic, Carnegie Hall, Meyerson Symphony Center, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and numerous state-wide, national, and international music conventions. In addition to his writing, Tyler enjoys conducting and clinic engagements with ensembles throughout the country. He has contributed interviews to articles in School Band & Orchestra Magazine, The Instrumentalist, and was recently a contributing author in Alfred Music Publishing Company’s Sound Innovations: Ensemble Development series. Tyler is a graduate of the University of Alabama where he holds a degree in instrumental music education. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia where he is on the music faculty at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School and maintains an active composing and conducting schedule. His more than 25 published works are available through The FJH Music Company, Inc. and Tyler S. Grant Music Works, LLC.

He returned to Arkansas State University and received his Master’s in Music Composition, studying with Dr. Tom O’Connor and Dr. Tim Crist. Randall is a member of ASCAP and is in demand as a composer, arranger, clinician, and designer. His pieces have been performed internationally, and numerous pieces have been selected to the J.W. Pepper’s Editor’s Choice list. He has also had several pieces selected for performance at the Midwest Clinic and his work Art(isms) was performed at the 2010 CBDNA Conference in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He currently lives in Jonesboro, Arkansas with his family.
TRIPWIRE
BY: JA R O D H A L L A tripwire is a low-bearing laser or string that sets off an explosion, trap, or alarm when touched. This piece follows a beam of bandits who must escape a secret hideout without being detected or tripping the wire. This clever work is unlike anything out there and offers some extraordinary colors. This piece establishes an adrenaline rush by having high-impact moments with steady pulses to keep momentum throughout the piece. Many instruments are featured in soli passages with an ear-worm type melody that resembles a bandit trying to avoid detection. JaRod Hall (b. 1991) is a Texas-native composer, educator, conductor, and DFW-based freelance tubist/trombonist. He holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas where he studied tuba with Don Little and conducting with Dr. Nicholas Williams and Dennis Fisher. While at North Texas, JaRod performed with the North Texas Wind Symphony, was a featured soloist on the 3 O’Clock Lab Band album, Jingle Them Bells. He has additionally performed with the Carrollton Wind Symphony, Metropolitan Winds, and the Texas All-State Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. As an educator, JaRod’s ensembles are perennial sweepstakes winners at the Texas UIL Concert

and Sight-Reading contest. Most recently, his band at Griffin Middle School was awarded the Citation of Excellence, honoring the top non-varsity bands in the state of Texas. JaRod’s students have premiered many of his compositions and arrangements for young band. JaRod currently resides in Grapevine, TX with his fiancée, Rachel.
MAH-NÁ MAH-NÁ
BY: P I E R O U M I L I A N I ARRANGED BY: CHRISTOPHER M. RETSCHULTE Mah Nà Mah Nà is a popular song by Italian composer Piero Umiliani. It originally appeared in the Italian film Sweden: Inferno e Paradiso. It was a minor radio hit in the U.S. and in Britain but became better known internationally for its use by The Muppets and on The Benny Hill Show. Mah Nà Mah Nà first gained popularity in English-speaking countries from its use in a recurring sketch for the 1969-70 season of The Red Skelton Show. Sesame Street producer Joan Ganz Cooney heard the track on the radio and decided a shaggy puppeteer named Jim Henson would be a perfect addition to the show. First performed by Jim Henson (Kermit), Frank Oz (Fozzie Bear) and Loretta Long (Susan) on the fourteenth episode of the long running children’s show, the song entered the public consciousness. The following Sunday when Henson and his Muppets performed the song on the Ed Sullivan Show, it became an instant classic. Seven years later the song would also be part of the premiere episode of The Muppet Show in 1976. The song’s lyrics contain no actual words, only iambic nonsense syllables resembling scat singing, and uses the musical technique of interpolation where melodies are abruptly cut off and replaced with new ones. With its catchy melodic material and upbeat style, this piece could add a playful flavor to any program. Flexibly arranged for as few as 8 players or as many as 14 players, this arrangement by Christopher M. Retschulte preserves the catchy melody and enhances the style with vocalizations, bird calls, hand claps, and vibraslap. It even includes a solo part that gives you the option of allowing a band director or guest artist the chance to perform with the group. An entertaining addition to any percussion ensemble concert!
HEART OF GOLD
BY: B R I A N B A L M AG E S Heart of Gold was commissioned by Susan E. Olsen in honor of Paul Salyers, a beloved band director in the Riverside community of California. When he had a heart transplant, the entire community rallied behind him and he went back to teaching as soon as he was allowed. Over a year later, he found out that his body was rejecting the heart, yet he continued teaching through the difficult treatment process. He was a fun, loving teacher who always made people smile. He was dedicated to his students
until the very end. In fact, his band live-streamed their concert to his hospital room while he was on life support. He passed hours later. Susan E. Olsen, the band director who spearheaded this commission, was insistent that the piece be fun and uplifting. Brian composed a simple melody in compound meter that makes it feel dance-like. The feel of the piece is meant to resemble Paul’s personality, fun, lively, energetic, and certain to put a smile on everyone’s face. It was premiered by a band that included many of Paul’s 7th and 8th grade alumni. Brian Balmages (b. 1975) is an award-winning composer, conductor, producer, and performer. He received his Bachelor’s degree in music from James Madison University and his Master’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida. The music he has written for winds, brass, and orchestra has been performed throughout the world with commissions ranging from elementary schools to professional orchestras. World premieres of his pieces include prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. His music was also performed as part of the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service. He is a recipient of the prestigious A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and in 2016 received the first inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Visual and Performing Arts. In the same year, he was commissioned by his other alma mater, the University of Miami, to compose music for the inauguration of the institution’s 6th president, Dr. Julio Frenk.
