is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the promotion of international understanding through the medium of band music. Through the administration of band related projects, the foundation seeks to uphold the standards and ideals of that icon of the American spirit.

Central Junior High is located west of the Dallas/Fort Worth International

Airport in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District. Central Junior High was named the #1 Most Diverse Public Middle School in Texas based on demographic data from the U.S. Department of Education. The school has over 1,170 students and almost 60% of the students participate in band, orchestra or choir. Also, Central Junior High offers instruction in five languages (Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, and French), a STEM Robotics & Engineering program in the 7th grade and advanced Pre-AP classes. Central Junior High is also unique among HEB ISD junior highs in that students are zoned to attend one of the two high schools, L.D. Bell High School and Trinity High School.

HEB ISD

serves nearly 23,000 students. Students attend elementary (grades K-6), junior high (grades 7-9), and high school (grades 10-12). HEB ISD is rich with diversity, which gives the district a distinctly international flavor. Students come from homes where more than 70 different native languages are spoken. Our district has a 99.5% graduation rate.

Almost 300 children are a part of the Central Junior High Band. Instruction in band begins in 7th grade where students meet in homogeneous classes daily for 45 minutes. After the beginner year, students in 8th and 9th grade are placed into one of three performing bands.

All three bands combine to form our pep band for community performances. Each performing band meets during the school day, and students also attend a one-hour instrument-specific sectional before or after school once a week. The 8th and 9th grade members perform a fall, winter, and spring concert. The beginners perform in the winter and spring concerts. As individual musicians, the band consistently earns the highest number of junior high positions in the district and region bands. The top performing ensemble is comprised of second and third year players. The Central Junior High Band has performed at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention twice, the International Midwest Clinic, and is a national winner for the Foundation for Music Education Mark of Excellence.

Christine Cumberledge

is in her twentieth year as Director of Bands at Central Junior High and twenty-fifth year of teaching. During this time, the band has earned several honors, including being a 2021 Foundation for Music Education National Winner, the 2020 TMEA Invited Performing Ensemble, and a 2019 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Conference Invited Performer. Central was also named the TMEA 2006 Honor Band under her direction.

Mrs. Cumberledge was a national semi-finalist for the Grammy 2022 Music Educator Award.

In 2017 she was named Music & Arts Educator of the Year in their nationwide competition. She has been included numerous times in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and was named to the National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers. Mrs. Cumberledge was the 20052006 Teacher of the Year for Central Junior High, and the 2006 Secondary Teacher of the Year for the district. She serves as the fine arts chair at Central and is a 2017-2018 Continuous Improvement Demonstration Classroom Teacher for Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD.

Christine Cumberledge Director of Bands

Mrs. Cumberledge received her Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of North Texas, graduating cum laude. While at the University of North Texas, she studied clarinet with Dr. John Scott. She is near the end of her Masters Degree at Lamar University in Educational Administration. An active clinician and adjudicator around the country, Mrs. Cumberledge has presented in Missouri, Kentucky, and throughout Texas just this year.

She is a member of Phi Beta Mu, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and Sigma Alpha Iota. Mrs. Cumberledge lives in Euless with her husband and daughter, who plays French horn in the Central Band.

Elayna Youngson

is in her second year of teaching as the Assistant Band Director at Central Junior High School. Her responsibilities include instruction of the Non-Varsity band and beginner brass classes. The Non-Varsity ensemble received a 1st division rating at the North Texas Festival of Distinction in 2021. Under her direction, the Non-Varsity Band received Sweepstakes at UIL in 2022 Ms. Youngson received her Bachelor of Instrumental Music Education Degree at Florida State University on her primary instrument French horn. While at Florida State, she performed in top ensembles under the direction of Patrick Dunnigan and Richard Clary. She is a member of the National Honorary Band Fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi, Texas Music Education Association, and Texas Bandmasters Association.

Ms. Youngson was a member of the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, the corps received the Jim Ott High Brass Award and in 2018 Ms. Youngson received runner up for the Jim Jones Leadership Award. She has been a Brass Instructor with the Legends Drum and Bugle Corps in 2019, Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps 20202021, and currently a Brass Instructor with the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps for their 2022 season.

Manny Flores

serves as Assistant Band Director and Director of Percussion at Trinity High School in Euless, TX. Mr. Flores is responsible for the Trinity High School percussion cluster, which includes Harwood, Central and Euless Junior High. He previously served as percussion director at Southwest High School in Fort Worth, TX from 2014-2020. His students have performed at the UIL State Marching Contest, The Midwest Clinic, TMEA All-State Band, and The Texas Bandmasters Convention. Recently, under his direction, Central JH Percussion Ensemble finished 3rd Place at the 2022 North Texas Percussion Festival. The Trinity HS Percussion Ensemble received highest honors at the 2022 North Texas Percussion Festival.

Mr. Flores studied under Dr. Michael Varner and Dr. James Yakas at The University of Texas at Arlington, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He performed with the UT Arlington Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Percussion Ensemble, African and Brazilian Ensembles and various marching percussion ensembles. While at UT Arlington, he was the recipient of the Victor C. Gonzalez Percussive Arts Society Scholarship, outstanding musician award and the 2014 UT Arlington Concerto Contest winner. As a performer, Mr. Flores was a member of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, Surround Sound Percussion, Dallas Cowboys Drumline, Dallas Mavericks Drumline, FC Dallas Drumline, and Dynamic Rhythm Entertainment. He is an active member of the Percussive Arts Society, Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association. He also serves as a member of the Vic Firth Educational Team. Manny lives in Crowley, TX with his wife Amanda, two dogs Mikko and Archer, and cat Rimsky.

Manny Flores

Director of Percussion

Bethann Adams retired in 2017 as Director of Bands at First Colony Middle School for thirty-two years and her thirty-sixth year of teaching band in the Fort Bend Independent School District.

Bands under Ms. Adams’ direction have consistently received superior ratings at Texas UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contests, as well as other contests and festivals in the state of Texas.

In 1997 the First Colony Middle School Symphony Orchestra performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. In 2002, the First Colony Middle School Honors Band was selected as a finalist in the Texas CCC Honor Band competition. The band also performed at the Midwest Clinic in 2002. The First Colony Middle School Band Program is a 2002 recipient of the most prestigious Sudler Silver Cup administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. In 2006, the Honors Band performed at the 33rd annual Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. In 2009 and 2016 the Honors Band was invited to perform at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Ms. Adams was chosen as the 2007 Teacher of the Year at First Colony Middle School and was named the 2007- 2008 Fort Bend ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. In March of 2009 she was awarded the Scroll of Excellence by Women Band Directors International.

Ms. Adams serves as an adjudicator and clinician in Texas and throughout the United States. She has served as University Supervisor for student teachers learning to become band directors for the University of Houston Moores School of Music. Ms. Adams is a consultant and clinician for many school districts in the Houston Metro area. Her professional affiliations include Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Phi Beta Mu and Sigma Alpha Iota. Ms. Adams is a member of the Women Band Directors International and serves as President of the organization. Ms. Adams is co-chair of the Sudler Silver Cup administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
