LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the 2024 Miss Utah Scholarship Competition! This year marks 98 years since Doretta Carstensen was selected as the first Miss Utah in front of over 7,000 spectators at the Great Saltair in 1926. Since then, 88 women have worn the Miss Utah crown (competitions were put on hiatus during the Great Depression, World War II, and COVID-19 pandemic). As we begin preparations for our century celebration in 2026, let’s remember that our history is not just a collection of dates and numbers; it’s a rich tapestry woven with the threads of thousands of stories - stories of innovation, social impact, and empowerment. These stories built the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization’s rich legacy and deserve to be remembered and shared.

Each of us - whether our participation in the Miss Utah program spans the role of a contestant, titleholder, volunteer, sponsor, parent, and/or supporter - has our own unique ‘Miss Utah Story,’ beginning with our introduction to the program. Some may have

been attracted to the scholarship offerings, others inspired by family members or other role models who went through the program, and others even originally begrudgingly “volun-told” their responsibilities for helping with a competition. Whatever path led us to Miss Utah, our collective involvement continues to carry significant impact across the state.

It has long been said that the crown serves as a microphone for titleholders to share their voices. As we honor Sarah Sun, our outgoing Miss Utah, we applaud her efforts to share her story with over 45,000 people (not including a digital audience spanning far beyond that) this year. We also recognize our 51 contestants, their unique journeys to the Capitol Theatre stage, and their personal narratives of overcoming adversity, advocating for meaningful causes, enacting change, and embracing their individuality.

We also celebrate our volunteers’ stories. Our statewide network of volunteers have collectively donated thousands of years to this pro-

gram. Many have seen it evolve through different eras, each embracing challenges with camaraderie and unwavering dedication to Miss America’s mission of empowering women to lead. We honor the stories of those who are no longer with us with gratitude for those shared experiences and treasured memories.

This week, and continuing forward into the future, I invite you to reflect on your personal ‘Miss Utah story.’ Share it, and ask others about theirs. Like snowflakes, no two are the same. Let’s ensure that the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization’s history is not only preserved, but cherished - for these stories will continue to inspire and guide us as we write the next chapter of Miss Utah’s story together.

Sincerely,

Letter from the Executive Director

Sharlene Wells

Miss America 1985

From Utah’s second Miss America to one of the first women signed with ESPN, Sharlene Wells was an award-winning sports broadcaster for nearly 20 years, earning an Emmy nomination and the Miller Lite Womens Sports Journalism award. She covered World Cup Soccer, World Cup Skiing, Kentucky Derby, the French Open, America’s Cup, and was a feature reporter and host with College GameDay, and covered the sidelines for Big 10 Football.

Later, Sharlene’s career shifted to running a production and publication company, working primarily in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD) to produce major commemorative documentaries and books for the Korean War 60th, Vietnam 50th, and Desert Storm Commemorations. Her recognized work led to her appointment by the Secretary of Defense to the Defense Advisory Committee for Women in the Services, earning her the Secretary’s “Medal for Exceptional Public Service” in 2018. Shar-

lene later accepted a position working inside the Pentagon as the Director of Communications for the largest HR department in the country—the DOD Office of Personnel—responsible for over 6 million service members, their families, and DOD civilians.

Today, Sharlene is back in Utah as the Senior Vice President over Public Relations and Organizational Communications for one of the largest credit unions in the country, Mountain America Credit Union. Earlier this year, Utah Business magazine named her as one of their “Women of the Year”, and Ragan Communications listed her as a “trailblazer” in their “Top Women in Communications” national awards program.

Sharlene holds a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism from BYU and a M.S. in Organizational Communications from the U of U. She serves as a board member for the AMAR International board based in London, the Association of the US Army, Utah Chapter, and USO Intermountain Advisory Council. MISS UTAH’S TEEN

The Miss Utah’s Teen program first started in 2005 with the goal of encouraging positive impact by nurturing scholastic achievement, healthy living, creative accomplishment, and community involvement in young women across the state. Today, Miss Utah’s Teen continues to support and reward community service, talent, communication skills, and academic achievement.

As the sister program to Miss Utah, Miss Utah’s Teen shares Miss America’s core values of style, scholarship, success, service, and sisterhood. In the program’s 19year history, over 400 young women have competed on the Miss Utah’s Teen stage, and hundreds more across the state have participated in the program on a local level. Miss Utah’s Teen not only helps young women across the state build resumes, pay for college, and prepare for their future careers, but it also creates opportunities for young women to gain additional life experience, build confidence, make friends, serve their communities, enhance personal and professional skills, and develop performance-related and other talents.

Scholarship

Miss Utah’s Teen has been Utah’s premier scholarship program for teens for nearly 20 years. What Inspired Your Goal of Becoming Miss Utah’s Teen?

Since the age of three, I have been inspired by women in this organization. It has been a lifelong pursuit of mine to serve and help others. I have always known that be coming Miss Utah’s Teen would open a network of doors that would enable me to reach more people and make a bigger difference.

munity events and sharing my passion of the arts with everyone I come in contact with.

What Other Extracurricular Activities Are You Involved in?

I spend a lot of time at my dance studio, Innovations Dance Academy. Not only do I dance there, but I also teach hip-hop and jazz. I also dance for my high school dance team. I’m a member of Future Farmers of America (FFA) and have served as vice-president and student advisor. I have participated in many floral and speaking competitions through FFA and am honored to have earned several first and top three placements in the state for these competitions. Through a grant from FFA, I was able to start my own floral business, Kira’s Bloom and Blush Flowers.

What is Your Service Initiative?

When I was in 9th grade, I truly gained a testimony of this program. I was going through a difficult bullying experience, and I knew I needed to stand up for myself. When I reported the bullying to the administration at my school, I came home terrified of the retaliation that I knew was coming. That night, Emma Broyles won Miss America. During the final question of the competition, she was asked how she would handle a situation if she was treated inappropriately by a male sponsor. Her response was, “I know in my heart that as a woman, I am never going to let somebody teat me like that because women should never be treated like objects. Women can be angry. We cannot be content with things that are happening.” Her response gave me validation

I started H.O.P.E. Through the Arts when I was just 13 years old. I created the acronym H.O.P.E. to educate the community on the benefits of the arts. Art results in positive outcomes in the areas of health, outlet, people, and experiences. Health: It is scientifically proven that art releases dopamine and lowers cortisol levels. Outlet: Art acknowledges our deep-seated emotions, making them easier to process. People: surrounds us with a support system of people with similar interests. Experiences: provides opportunities to create healthy memories.

To help others find H.O.P.E. through the arts, I host free monthly workshops that appeal to a variety of individuals across the state of Utah. I also love interacting with people at different com-

What Advice do You Have for Others Aspiring to be Miss Utah’s Teen?

First off, ANYONE can be Miss Utah’s Teen! My journey competing has been a roller coaster with lots of highs and lows. Competing is hard, but that’s okay! My biggest advice is to go into every competition with the intention of having fun and growing as a person, as well as remembering your “why.” Why are you competing? Why did you choose your initiative? What have you gone through to get to where you are? Think about that before every interview and every area of competition. It will give you the extra boost of motivation and confidence. The Miss America Opportunity not only helps you gain skills for a competition, but for life. Everything you do and learn will help you in the future. Don’t be afraid to push yourself. Just remember that you got this and that you are a woman that is changing lives one step at a time.

MISS UTAH’S HONEYBEES

The Miss Utah’s Honeybees (formerly called “Little Miss”) program is the official Utah state chapter of the Miss America’s Little Sisters. This non-competitive program allows girls ages 6-12 to make new friends, build confidence, and gain mentors. Honeybees get a behind-scenes-look at the Miss Utah production, the chance to perform and promenade onstage, and one-on-one time with their Miss Utah “big sisters.”

The Miss Utah’s Honeybee program inspires girls around the state to get involved in their communities, be a friend to others, and develop their talents. We hope they return to the Miss Utah stage in the future as contestants, and possibly be crowned Miss Utah some day!

LOCAL VOLUNTEER AWARD

DONNA MILLARD

onna Millard has been a committed Miss America volunteer for decades. Following her daughters’ involvement in the Miss Orem program, Donna became the Miss Orem Director, and she has graciously and tirelessly served in that role for nearly ten years.

An outstanding leader, Donna has created a program that prepares women to become their best selves both on and off the stage. Donna looks for ways to make the Miss Orem program as comprehensive as possible, providing contestants with workshops in walking, interview, talent, and more. Her vision has been to create a well-rounded educational experience designed for all.

Since becoming the Miss Orem Director in 2016, Donna’s titleholders have found plenty of success at the Miss Utah: three have placed in the Top 5; two have placed as semi-finalists; and Miss Orems have received a myriad of other awards including a Preliminary Talent Award,

Rookie Red Carpet Award, Sadie Huish Award, and the Quality of Life Award.

Donna’s titleholders shared the following sentiments:

“Donna has instilled so much courage in me: the courage to love, the courage to believe in myself, and the courage to be a voice for others.”

“Donna is such a radiant person. I will never forget her kindness in gifting me a beautiful homemade quilt to take to Miss Utah. She has so much light and goodness in her, and I’m truly so lucky to have had her as my director; I’m now lucky to have her as my lifelong friend.”

“She is a pillar in Orem City, having unmistakably impacted the lives of countless music students, Miss Orem participants, and local non-profit organizations. I felt so supported by her, and I am still inspired daily by Donna’s vision and commitment to serving others.”

D LEGACY AWARD BRUCE & LAURA EVERINGHAM

Bruce and Laura audited their first pageant, Miss Pleasant Grove, in 2004. When word got around about what a great job they did, they were quickly asked to audit numerous others and became Miss Utah’s official state auditors shortly after. Though they often stay out of the spotlight, the Everinghams’ longstanding service and dedication to the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization continues to leave a lasting impact.

Former state leadership shared the following about Bruce and Laura:

“I could always depend on them to catch a problem before it occurred and to make sure the numbers were right. That’s a lot

of pressure to be an auditor, but they always handled it without a glitch.”

“When I would show up to emcee a pageant, I was always relieved when I found out they were the auditors because I knew everything would go smoothly. I wish I had an embarrassing moment to share, but they never messed anything up!”

The Everinghams’ daughters have enjoyed hearing stories and watching videos of Mom and Dad’s favorite talent performances over the years. They always knew that Saturday nights were special to their parents, and that they were in their element. When asked what their hobbies are, the immediate answer, with no hesitation, is being involved with Miss Utah.

Aside from Donna’s work with Miss Orem, she also regularly organizes musical numbers and events, runs a private piano studio, and serves as the Mountain View High School choral program’s assistant and accompanist. She is also an avid gardener, enthusiastic pool-party host, and loving mother and grandmother.

With a Dr. Pepper in hand and a sunny, can-do disposition, Donna truly embodies what it means to be a committed volunteer.

Thank you, Bruce and Laura, for your love for the Miss Utah program, its mission, and people. The Miss Utah Scholarship Organization appreciates all you do to ensure things run smoothly and is thrilled to honor you with this award.

With over a decade of expertise, our team of former competitors, judges, and industry professionals offers personalized coaching that transforms you into a winner whether you’re on stage or in the boardroom.

MISS UTAH REFLECTION

The Miss Utah Opportunity has been a point of inflection in my life that completely shaped the course of my future. This crown has enabled me, an ordinary twenty-something year old woman, to tangibly impact the lives of tens of thousands of people in the state I love so dearly. With profound humility, I am now sinking to my knees at the finish line–shaking, breathless, and exhausted–knowing that 100% of my heart, might, mind, and strength rests upon the altar as my final offering. In anticipation of the crowning of Miss Utah 2024, whose life is about to change forever, I hope to share a few lessons I have learned in hopes that they may be of some use to you throughout your exciting year.

Things sparkle when they reflect light. The shiniest moments of my year received their glimmer from the goodness of those I had the privilege of serving. Setting out with a mission to bring arts education to the Utah State Correctional Facility, I was blessed to have surpassed that goal within the first three months of my year. From there, my visits to the state prison and juvenile detention centers have resulted in sharing laughter and tears with hundreds of men, women, and youth as I listened to their stories and shared mine in return.

In an environment where questions of human dignity are palpably poignant, it is critically important to see people for who they truly are. Seared in my memory is the image of a bright

15-year-old girl at Farmington Bay, sitting with her back stick straight and her head held just a fraction of an inch higher, parting her tears with the words, “thank you for seeing me as your equal.” I didn’t have to tell her that for her to feel it. She felt it because it was true. From the lowest of the low to the highest of the high, every human being is of equal worth and value.

I will put my crown on for the last time on June 15th, but my hope is that the next girl who wears it knows that as shiny as the crown may be, its true power is often unlocked when it comes off. The crown, if untethered from the heart, is at best an empty accessory and at worst a means of creating distance between you and those

you strive to serve. Wearing a crown to be seen by others makes it a costume. Wearing a crown to see others makes it a mission.

Your mission is only yours to fulfill: let that be profoundly exciting. If you don’t see a path in front of you, it’s because that path is yours to create. This year, I have been touched by volunteers across the state telling me that their neighbors know me by name. However, my happiest moments have been the ones where people were more focused on His name than on mine. My journey began with the decision to wear a simple, white dress. A small, insignificant decision became the driving force behind a message that resonated with millions of people online. This year has afforded me the privilege of keynoting nearly 100 firesides, and it was a common occurrence for audiences to range between 300-600 people. As you make your indelible mark on the world, never underestimate the influence you can have as you keep your focus outward and strive to represent something bigger than yourself.

Be inspired by the women you will meet through this organization. I am so proud to have Madison Marsh representing the Miss America Class of 2024. As I’ve sought to learn from the strengths of my Miss America and Miss Utah sisters, I have been inspired to do more and become more. From the moment my Miss Utah sisters rallied around me last June, I knew I needed to level up in order to be worthy of representing such a tremendous group. As Miss Utah, I have managed to obtain a 4.0 at BYU and ran a twomonth campaign, starting on the flight home from Miss America, to be BYU’s next Student Body President. My ca-

reer goals have also sharpened, and I owe so much of my personal growth to the examples of grit and discipline that I’ve observed in the women this organization has brought into my life.

I am indebted to the Miss Utah program in ways I will spend the rest of my life trying to repay. More importantly, I am indebted to the remarkable people who have blessed me in ways I can never adequately articulate. While a mere “thank you,” simply doesn’t seem sufficient, rest assured that my love and appreciation will continue to accrue interest indefinitely throughout the remainder of my lifetime.

To Madison and Whitney: Thank You for heading this ship with strength, ability, kindness, and love. What a privilege it has been to be shaped by the two of you this year.

To Del: Thank You for believing in me and for loving me like one of your own.

To Jake Galovich, Jess Orvin, Heather Jackman, Kelsey Jenson, Ari Hansen, Amy Rasmussen, Tawnya Monson, Denice Kitchen, and Raychellene Talbot: Thank You so much for contributing your outstanding talents to this organization and for all you do to advance its mission.

To Julie Edwards and Dawn Meeves: Thank You for the countless hours you’ve spent on the road with me and for always being so patient and helpful.

To Jessica and Jaylynn Lindley and Kira and Heather Gardner: Thank You for showing the world just how incredible Utah’s teens can be.

To the Miss Utah 2023 judges, partic-

ularly Gene Hill and Jeanette Bennett: Thank You for trusting me with the opportunity of a lifetime and for your continued support and encouragement in all my endeavors.

To my pageant family - Jessica Adams, the Meek family, Linda Sorenson, Savvy Jardine, Jalena Warner, Austri Biddinger, Jesse Craig Bailey, Hillary Beecher, Amanda Riley, JessiKate Riley, Halleigh and Ryleigh Paulin, Savvy Allen, Aspyn Doxey, Kaylie Ross, Sasha Sloan, and the Miss Utah Class of 2023: Thank You for helping me feel like I could move mountains, when in reality your love was doing the heavy lifting.

To those who assisted with my Miss America preparation, Tewa Wride, Carly Condie, Crown the Nation, Annika Wooten, Juven Nava, Craig Hughes, Ron Hansen (Crossfit EMC), Grace and Kelly Ehinger (Veronica Michael’s), Sarah Nelson (Ypsilon Dresses), and Carry and David with Regalia Magnificent Apparel: Thank You for all you did to help me put my best foot forward.

To our incredible Miss Utah sponsors: Thank You for believing in this program and for your immense generosity

To my most dearly beloved: Mom, Dad, Anna, Jeff, David, Melissa, and Ted: Thank You for believing in my dreams as if they were your own. I love you all more than you will ever know.

To the State of Utah: Thank You for allowing me the honor of representing you.

With love forever, Sarah Sun

The Red Heart Project: Being CPR Prepared and Saving Lives

Watching my father save my cousin’s life ignited a passion within me; a passion to become a nurse and educate everyone on the importance of life saving skills. As a certified CPR instructor for the American Heart Association (AHA) and a volunteer for Utah’s local chapter of the AHA, I’ve made a significant impact in my advocacy and continue to drive my mission forward. Additionally, I spread my reach through my online series “Go Red Sunday,” which provides free CPR education, discusses heart health, and shares real stories about the power of CPR. I believe everyone can save a life.

Her Story

It began with a little girl and her first dance class. This paved the path for her story. She learned to take initiative, create change, and lead gracefully. Although there were setbacks, she learned from them. As she grew, she was drawn to the Miss America Opportunity. She wanted this experience for herself. She chose a career that aligned with saving lives. Today on the Miss Utah stage, she is taking initiative to teach others to save lives. As she chases her happy ending, she is the queen in her own story because of the impact she has made.

The Price of Knowledge

It’s the whole concept of understanding the value and cost of gaining information/education. The more you know, the more you realize that it is going to be a battle and a price to pay for it. This could be time, effort, or even just the emotional weight of what you have learned and gaining that information. After experiencing this myself, my involvement is to make this known and helping those who I can to overcome the battle that it is and understanding it the best they can.

Her Story

I was born with only two vessels in my umbilical cord. At age seven, a concussion showed me adversity at a young age. The start of high school was met with multiple concussions and three surgeries in a year, challenging me physically and emotionally. Ongoing care took over my life. My education struggled, academically and emotionally, as empathy from faculty was scarce. In result, mental illness ensued. I felt life and dreams slipping away, until my local Miss America Program. It gave me a purpose and the chance to catch up, not just in accomplishments but in self love and confidence.

Pages to Progress: Empowering Young Minds One Book at a Time

I’ve had the privilege of visiting various elementary schools across Utah to educate young students about the importance of literacy by reading to them and tutoring them. Through my partnerships with Road to Success and United Way Northern Utah, I have been able to ignite a passion for reading and learning by immersing them into different stories/characters, incentivizing them with exciting prizes (including a bike!) and installing Little Free Libraries in local neighborhoods to help expand access to books because every page counts on the path to progress.

Her Story

Seven years ago, I gave up on a dream out of fear. Over the course of the next few years, that opportunity would present itself (specifically for me, it felt like) again and again. Luckily, I’ve grown and matured and realized that it’s okay to do hard things and finally said yes. It was the best thing I’ve ever done. Because of that, I now get to share my story on the Miss Utah stage. Here is your sign to say YES to the Miss Utah Opportunity. It can change the trajectory of your life, just like it did mine.

Safe Steps - Safe K.I.D.S.

A program designed to prepare elementary and middle school students with essential skills on what to do in emergency situations, how to handle injuries, and how to administer basic first aid. K.I.D.S is an acronym that stands for Know the problem, Initiate help, Don’t rush, Start care. Every child should have the knowledge and tools necessary to take care of themselves and others in unexpected situations. I believe that by providing children with the skills they need to handle emergency situations they will feel more confident, secure, and prepared for whatever life throws their way.

Her Story

Born resilient, I faced many challenges throughout my life. My resilience has only grown stronger with each challenge. Dance became my heartbeat, shaping my identity and fueling my spirit. Dance made me, me. My journey is marked by a love for adventure and a personality that’s outgoing and bubbly. My life’s story is one of enduring strength, passionate expression, and an infectious enthusiasm for every new day.

Better Together

I create opportunities for people to find connections and fight loneliness. Over half of Americans have reported feeling social isolation and chronic loneliness, with rates increasing yearly. My message is to find genuine connections, to reach out if you’re feeling lonely, and to join a community. I speak to classrooms and host events about the importance of being present in relationships and outreaching to others. I have gotten involved with Cottonwood High School and created a Club Fair. Clubs are an excellent way to create a community and to feel involved.

Her Story

In college, I was in a severe car accident causing me to be in the emergency room until 3:00am. However, I was still at my 8:00am class ready to learn. No matter the situation, I will always show up. That’s the kind of titleholder I am. I am resilient, determined, and reliable. As Miss Utah, I will always show up for this community.

The Confidence Project

Some people believe that confidence is an attribute that you’re either born with, or you’re not – however I believe that it is a skill, and a skill that can be learned. Once confidence is built, it provides the ability to strengthen every facet of one’s life, whether it be in the workplace, at school, or within interpersonal relationships. By hosting personal workshops of 10-15 individuals, I teach and promote the skill of confidence through a series of thought-provoking exercises that develop the unique aspects of manifesting, empowering others, service and self-awareness.

Her Story

To me, life is all about connection. A proud native of the Beehive State, I have lived everywhere in Utah from Orem to St. George to North Salt Lake and more. Moving so frequently always pushed me to get out of my comfort zone, & form lasting connections with people wherever I landed. My desire for connection also inspired my college major, Public Relations – a career field where connection is the name of the game. Ultimately I’ve found my most authentic connections within the Miss America Opportunity, where I have truly grown & thrived for the past seven years of my life.

Kids Who Can

For as long as I can remember, I have had a special place in my heart for kids. Being the oldest of five kids and 12 grandkids has been one of the most important roles in my life, and also brought me a nurturing nature. When I was deciding on an initiative at the beginning of my journey in MAO, almost three years ago, I knew I wanted to dedicate my time to helping children. Since then, I have spent hours teaching classes, giving lectures, and doing everything possible to help elevate the lives of our future generations.

Her Story

Being a dancer and cheerleader has been a huge factor of my life. Once I started, I knew I never wanted to stop. No matter what is going on in the world or where I’m at in my journey, I stay involved by teaching, learning or doing. I love the feeling of performing and being on stage. This is what initially drew me to the Miss America Opportunity. I jump at any opportunity to perform and grow. As I got more involved I fell in love with the idea that I can do all of these things and make a difference!

United We Stand: Promoting Civility in Political Conversations

Freedom of speech and diversity of opinions make the United States of America the apex country of the world. Unfortunately, the celebration of political diversity and the ability to confidently express political opinions are rapidly disappearing in our modern culture. By facilitating and moderating discussions on current hot-button issues, I help connect people across party lines through healthy political dialogue. As American citizens, it is essential to care about the dialogue in democracy because that determines the health of our government.

Her Story

As a child, I loved to read historical fiction. Learning about another time fascinated me. Years later, I had the opportunity to live in Europe and visit the places I had read about. I couldn’t contain my excitement as I toured museums and historical sites as they brought history alive for me. These experiences have fueled my love for travel and learning about various histories and cultures around the world. My program will focus on building relationships, teaching communication skills, and providing positive role models for teens.

Her Story

I was visiting Washington D.C. to advocate against e-cigarettes. We had a whole slideshow prepared. We had practiced for hours! Instead of talking to us about drugs he said, “Tell me about the suicide rates in your schools” I was shocked no one had mentioned suicided in my life before. Food Insecurity: Outnumber Hunger

Every day, there are 1 in 8 Utah children who are unsure of where their next meal will come from. Food insecurity is linked to decreased overall health, homelessness, and behavioral challenges among children. As Miss Greater Salt Lake, I became an official advocate for Utahns Against Hunger. I ran a state-wide audit updating food pantry resources for families and SNAP qualifications. I also partnered with the American Heart Association of Utah and Representative Tyler Clancey to lobby for three pieces of public health legislation in the most recent Utah legislative session.

Her Story

I lost my father to stage four colon cancer at the age of 18. That experience taught me how fragile life is and the importance of truly living every day to the fullest. When I moved to Utah in 2020 to attend Utah Valley University, I took that mindset and learned how to snowboard, ski, rock climb, rappel, and summit Utah’s peaks. I find joy in the outdoors and in serving those around me. Through my community service initiative, Outnumber Hunger, I have had the opportunity to create many impactful relationships with state legislation and statewide anti-hunger organizations.

Cool to Care

It is so hard to put yourself out there sometimes. With the disconnect we get from social media and recovering from the 2020 pandemic that shook and stunted our growth when it came to being able to connect with each other on even a basic level, it’s hard to try when there is a very real possibility of failure. I want to share with Utah my personal passions and inspire others to realize that caring about yourself, each other, and the world around you is cooler than we’ve been lead to believe.

Her Story

Born and raised in Draper, Utah, I grew up with an amazingly close family and parents that helped instill loving others and working hard to get what I want. I fell in love with performing at a young age and theatre shortly after. I started in pageants young and developed speaking abilities and a love of service as well as lifelong connections. Amidst so much joy, something was missing. In 2021, I was diagnosed with a mental health disorder and worked to manage and fully embrace my life still gratefully doing what I love with who I love.

The Kindness Chain

In September, I spoke to Woodstock Elementary about the benefits of generosity and heard the students’ experiences with kindness. For five weeks, students wrote an act of kindness on a paper strip and connected the links to build a chain with those in their class. At the end of the month, I hung them around the school as a physical representation that kindness connects us as a community. I completed a condensed version of this project with Horizon Elementary in March. Murray’s Little Miss, Rosy Orton, has also helped me in my initiative by sharing monthly kindness challenges on social media.

As an advocate for survivors of sexual assault, my mission is to help survivors know that there is life after your assault. I was able to join UCASA at the state capitol to advocate and fight for survivors rights and prevention as well as work with The Refuge Utah to support their recovery programs. In the month of April, I advocated in person and online by wearing teal everyday for sexual assault awareness month and hosted a 5k for survivors in my community to bring people together and make the resources we have known and readily available for survivors.

Her Story

I grew up in a family with seven kids and two loving parents. They taught me about people, service, God, working hard, and having fun. Growing up had its challenges, as it always does, but by pulling myself out of a dark place, I was able to create a new one that was full of light. I have always been involved in the community with clubs, the arts, leadership roles, service, sports, anything I could to learn and grow. Ultimately it has all pointed me towards discovering my purpose, to love and to serve.

Power of Play: Advocating for Hospitalized Children

As a Certified Child Life Specialist, I have seen firsthand how vital play items are in creating a positive hospital experience for children and their families. My licensed charity works to involve the community of Utah to provide these essential play items to hospitalized children through statewide toy drives and service opportunities. Additionally, it is our initiative to educate the community on the negative effects of hospitalization on a child’s long-term development.

Her Story

As a little girl, I was hospitalized needing surgical intervention, and the only thing that made it easier for me was play. This experience led me to pursue a career in pediatrics, where I have been practicing clinically in my dream career as a Certified Child Life Specialist II, aiding kids and their families in coping throughout hospitalization in some of the most difficult moments in the Emergency Department. My life purpose is to make a difference, which I pursue through my continuous efforts to serve others around me and inspiring others to do the same.

The Power to Empower

There is an epidemic of self confidence and lack of emotional resilience here in Utah. It has been my goal to share my passion of creating peace within your own world by introducing skills to the youth in my community on how to self-regulate their emotions. The more confident our youth today are in themselves, the more emotionally resilient they will be as adults in the future. It has been my mission to inspire those in my community to understand that they are, in fact, capable of creating their own peace regardless of the cards they are dealt.

Her Story

I was born in Rochester, New York, and moved to Utah when I was 9. Coming from a very musically inclined family, I have had to learn how to find my own individual sound. This past year, I have been anxiously awaiting my high school graduation. At the same time, my parents got divorced. Despite this, I managed to earn all A’s and get my CNA at a technical college, all the while balancing community duties and struggles at home. I believe that my ambition and drive are my individuality and voice and are what make me successful.

S.N.A.P.: Service Nurtures All People

I have worked with organizations in Utah to create and promote service opportunities for those of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances. Once finding something you are passionate about, service becomes second nature and evolves from what some see as a chore, to something they enjoy for the rest of their lives. Throughout these service opportunities, individuals have been able to foster meaningful connections while improving both overall self-esteem and mental health. The opportunity we have to serve others is the first step in helping each of us get back to the good within us.

Her Story

Growing up with younger twin brothers, being a leader and taking the road less traveled was nothing out of the ordinary for me. I was always willing to try something new, and those experiences helped form the person I am today. This past year, I have worked with Utah immigrants by organizing college workshops, translating in schools, hosting clothing drives, teaching English, serving at food banks, and guiding citizenship test preparation. I’ve collaborated with Nomen Global to create a worldwide online curriculum for learning English. I have publicized scholarships, college application directions, and step by step instructions to apply for grants. I started a TV series on Channel 17 as a resource for Spanish immigrants. My latest project is a scholarship I created called the Tassel Scholarship, it is designed to aid three deserving undergraduates with student visas in Provo.

Her Story

Born in the vibrant city of Provo, I was raised by wonderful parents who taught me to give back. From elementary to high school, I’ve thrived on being actively involved. Whether that’s been on sports teams, musical theater casts, or youth councils, to now being Miss Provo, spear-heading my own service initiative, and working with a non-profit, playing a small role in the fortifying of my community has always been a fulfilling part of my life. Now as a student at BYU, I have chosen to study marketing and global impact in hopes of giving back on a larger scale.

The Gift You Are

My goal is to promote the inclusion of the special needs community throughout our state. Growing up, I have been surrounded by many people with different disabilities, and I can see the need to become unified and utilize all abilities. Through my hours of service, I have been able to raise hundreds of dollars for special education programs around the state and have been dedicated to working with these individuals in a multitude of settings. My long-term goal for my initiative is to create a scholarship for individuals with disabilities that would enable them to get a higher form of education.

Her Story

I have always wanted to try a scholarship pageant. In 2020, I met my best friend while on the college dance team. She was a Miss Utah contestant in 2017 and inspired me to put myself out there. I originally joined pageants because of the scholarship opportunity that would help my ultimate goal of graduating from college debt-free. My reasoning for joining this organization has grown into so much more than just a scholarship. Now, I have a platform to promote good in the world and show others why it’s so important to include the disability community.

Gift of Movement Scholarship

I founded my scholarship organization three years ago, and have since awarded $5,000 in scholarships to financially restricted youth engaged in extracurricular activities. There are two parts to the program: fundraising then awarding the scholarships. Fundraising events have included a 5K race, a princess party, and a self-defense class, along with recent developments that will allow me to award 50 more youth scholarships this year. Over the last month, I have partnered with ten youth athletic organizations statewide, aiming to increase scholarship applications. My goal is to bridge the financial gap between a child’s aspirations and their current reality.

Her Story

Growing up as a dancer, I wanted to train seven days a week, five hours a day. The cost of my dance tuition was over $1,000 a month. I had to search for scholarships to meet the financial demand for the number of hours I wanted to train. I am so grateful to say that the last two years of my dance training in high school were entirely paid for through studio scholarships. Creating the Gift of Movement Scholarship was an easy decision; it allows me to provide more opportunities for youth, just like many people did for me.

In my community and many others around Utah, thousands of our elderly neighbors struggle daily with loneliness and boredom. My initiative is about establishing meaningful connections between youth and senior citizens, and to bring companionship to those who don’t have it at home or in assisted living facilities. Through personal visits, letter writing campaigns, talent shows, and game nights, we can bring joy and fun to our senior citizens. This improves mental health, alleviates loneliness and depression, and builds lasting friendships for everyone involved.

Her Story

When I was younger, I was scared to try things that pushed me out of my comfort zone. If I wasn’t good at something new right away, I wasn’t always brave enough to persevere after failure, and it took time to build that confidence. As I mature, I can look back and see that what scared me the most also gave me the best experiences of my life! I moved away from home, joined the military, and decided to pursue my dream of practicing medicine. Now I’m ready to be challenged again, on the Miss Utah stage!

Go the Extra Mile for a Healthy Lifestyle

Healthy habits are crucial to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I’m passionate about educating kids on the importance of building and living healthy habits. With my curriculum, children can create a strong foundation of healthy habits for their social, physical, and mental health. I have planned and hosted two Children’s Marathons where elementary school students in Salem were asked to complete 25 “honorary miles” by doing anything that practices a healthy habit. For the last 1.2 miles, we gathered and ran together in a fun run. I love seeing the kids creativity in ways to find ways to make healthy living fun.

Her Story

I was born in Arizona, with the ten years as a military kid ahead of me. Moving seven times, I have learned so much from the five different states I lived in. My parents would always ask where I wanted to end up living, and without question it was always Utah. I love this state and am so happy to be here representing it. With all of my moves I had to learn to make friends quickly and become my own leader. I believe these traits have help me grow and become the person I am today.

Inspiring Patriotism: Past, Present, and Future

I am creating unity in our country by establishing common ground among Americans. As we come to appreciate the sacrifices made for us by our veterans, we gain a greater desire to vote and preserve those freedoms they fought for, as well as to prepare the next generation to lead with compassion and patriotism. As I lead our state to adopt these ideals, patriotism becomes common ground as citizens understand that patriotism is not agreeing on the course of action but an appreciation for the sacrifices made and the desire for a better future for those who live in America.

Her Story

The Miss America Opportunity helps me succeed both personally and professionally. Because of the interview skills and poise I have gained through pageantry, I have excelled in sales competitions across the country. While the trophies and medals look nice on my shelf, the skills I’ve gained in sales and marketing have also helped me acquire many sponsors and generous donors for the Miss Sanpete County Organization. Fuel Your Fire

Over 80% of individuals in the world experience a lack of motivation at some point in life. People all over the world are leading an undesirable life. Motivation is a force that causes actions towards our desires. What is this force? Dopamine, the natural human attraction to positive, happy, and uplifting stimuli. This is what I call your fire within. By recognizing the connection between dopamine, goals, and passion, we can cultivate our inner fire to propel ourselves forward. Ultimately, my goal is to help others understand the profound impact that a fueled inner fire can have on the world.

I make it a priority to exhibit the qualities of kindness and to lead others to live a life filled with service. It was so inspiring to see these students so motivated to serve their peers, and have a strong desire to continue this inside their classrooms, homes, and extracurriculars.

Money Talks

Money is the basis of almost everything we do as adults. It is essential that we properly financially prepare our teens for their future. By doing so, we create more responsible and involved adults. During presentations, I focus on fives keys: building a budget, growing your savings, managing credit, understanding debt interest, and filing taxes. I have cultivated a strong partnership with Junior Achievement Utah, volunteered at Title I schools, and empowered teens all across Utah to own their financial futures.

Her Story

As a young girl, I often felt inadequate and insecure. I let opportunities pass me by because I was too afraid. I entered the Miss America Opportunity with little confidence, a deep fear of public speaking, and no idea what direction to take. Inspiring Youth to Find Their “Natural High”

My passion for dance has provided refuge and purpose for me in my life. The resolve to maintain a healthy body and never use drugs has become more than just a personal choice, instilling in me a strong resolution to also be a positive influence for my family, peers, and community members. My goal to inspire others to develop talents, build connections, strengthen emotional well-being, and thrive in the face of adversity has provided meaning and foundation to these last years of service. I look forward to making a lasting difference in my community in the years to come.

Her Story

Even though I grew up in a large, noisy family, I was somewhat shy and introverted. Music and movement became my voice, leading me to spend more time at the dance studio than at home. For over a decade, my family and I cleaned the studio to support my passion. It was through both hard work and sacrifice that I was able to gain a deep passion and gratitude for dance, which gave me grounding and purpose in my life. Now, I aim to help others discover their voices and talents, inspired by the resilience I found in dance.

I served as a member of Gunnison Valley High School’s Hope Squad, a student-led suicide prevention group. I coordinated a county-wide fundraiser to raise money for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI.) Recently, I participated in undergraduate research through the College of Social and Behavioral Science. I was featured on KMTI radio for ‘This Mind of Mine” and presented to schools and dance studios across the state. As Miss Wasatch Front, I have been able to share mental health strategies at monthly lunches with elementary school students across Davis County.

Her Story

I grew up in a small town in central Utah called Gunnison. The Beehive State is my home, and I want to give back to the community that raised me. I have struggled with mental health personally, so I created my initiative, “This Mind of Mine,” to help end the stigma surrounding mental illness. I love to dance, sing, and play guitar, and I am a black belt in Kenpo Karate! I am also a proud member of the Delta Gamma sorority at the University of Utah, where I also serve as an ambassador.

Let’s Developpe

Studying dance, I dove into courses on dance kinesiology, pedagogy, and history, widening my perspective on movement. I’ve been integrating dance techniques into various communities by offering exercise classes, community dance sessions, body recovery classes, and health centered movement activities working with organizations such as the Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Clubs, and women’s shelters. Currently I’m in the process of launching classes in retirement homes to educate seniors on arthritis, Parkinson’s, and dementia therapy through movement. While not a licensed dance therapist, I’m using my platform to promote the health benefits of dance and guide others through movement practices.

Her Story

As a child, fitting in was never easy. I adored my mom’s heels, makeup, and all things art, but also playing in the dirt and exploring. My diverse interests set me apart, making it challenging to blend in. Rather than changing, I celebrated my passions for art, dresses, and dirt bikes. My journey is simply about being true to myself, embracing every facet of who I am and standing true to my beliefs. Life now is about taking hold and embracing each moment because at the end of the day, I will only ever just be me.

Embracing Differences

Through volunteering for various non-profit organizations to hosting an online show called, “Embrace with Grace,” I work to celebrate and promote what makes us unique. I have been able to work with Project Rainbow, The Human Rights Campaign, youth homeless shelters, Equality Utah, and more to spread my message of love and inclusivity. As a D1 athlete with multiple autoimmune disorders and anxiety, I had to accept my own challenges before I could learn how to help spread awareness to others. Both self love, and love for others is essential for positive progression in todays society.

Her Story

The first time I felt different and alone was in fifth grade when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. The second time was in eighth grade when I was told I had generalized anxiety disorder. Growing up, I was always quick to help and love others, but I struggled to accept my own differences at the same time. I eventually found my voice, and used it to spread a message of unconditional love. I quickly learned, however, that in order to do so, I needed radical acceptance for myself too. I now dedicate my life to helping others do the same.

Beautifully Different

It’s a gentle plea, urging us to embrace ourselves and each other with open arms, cherishing our beautiful differences, and nurturing a world where self-love and compassion flourish. I’m profoundly touched to amplify this heartfelt message. Through genuine conversations, organizing interactive community events, and implementing creative projects like mural painting and distributing positive message stickers, my goal is to encourage self-acceptance, understanding, and the celebration of diversity. Let’s unite and sprinkle the world with love, one tender act of kindness at a time.

Her Story

Growing up, I faced relentless bullying, targeted for my appearance and speech. Those experiences shattered my self-esteem, leading me to suppress aspects of myself to fit in. Through perseverance, I embarked on a journey of self-acceptance and rediscovery. I reclaimed buried facets of my personality and learned to love myself. Now, I’m passionate about empowering others facing similar struggles to embrace their uniqueness and cultivate self-love. Participating in the Miss America Opportunity provides me with a platform to amplify this message, reaching a wider audience, spreading awareness, and inspiring positive change.

Let’s Get Creative: Arts Education

Statistics show that students involved in the arts do better academically and are overall happier students. I want to help students take advantage of that statistic! I strive to help everyone to find their place in the arts and help provide opportunities for people of all ages to be able to do the art that they love. Everybody deserves to have access to what is important to them! With my program, “Stage For Everyone,” and my arts scholarship, I am excited to continue to provide opportunities for the amazing people of Utah so they can do what they love.

Her Story

While growing up, it has been the support of my family and friends that got me through everything. Whether they were at my shows, or pageants, or graduation, I always had my family behind me. They taught me to be the kind and loving person I am today. I am a girl who wants to do everything she can to make her family proud. My grandfather taught me to always be kind and serve others. I hope that in my story I continue his legacy as I go on to pursue my dreams and write the rest of my story.
