There she is...
Miss Neurosurgeon, Miss Social Activist, Miss Jet Pilot, Miss Investigative Journalist, Miss Expert Coder, Miss CEO . . . Miss Whatever-She-Wants-to-Be.
And yes, she is beautiful.
Beautiful in the way she is smart, principled and passionate.
Stunning in how she leads, commands a room and makes an impact.
Striking in her genuineness, fearlessness and general awesomeness.
Never guided by what she ‘should do’ but forever driven by what she ‘could do’.
She has the confidence, the skills and is empowered to make it happen.
There she is. Miss America.
No wonder she has a crown — she rules.

been fortunate enough to enter into this program and continue to the state level has witnessed what incredible experiences these theaters provide.
and you the fun and magic we have in store for this monumental week!
Welcome back to the home of the Miss Utah Scholarship Competition!
The newly-renovated Capitol Theatre first hosted our competition in 2005. Thirteen Miss Utah titleholders have been crowned on this stage. Hundreds more candidates from around the state have competed here, and thousands of volunteers, supporters, friends, and family have witnessed these young women live out their dreams. Bringing the competition back to the Capitol Theatre has been our vision and goal for over four years, and we are thrilled to return to our Miss Utah home to crown Miss Utah 2022.
The stages at Abravenel Hall, Mountain View High School, Eccles Theater, and the Covey Center for the Arts have also provided memorable seasons for this program, and the Miss Utah board is forever grateful for these fantastic venues and partnerships. Any young woman who has
Every year, Miss Utah week is filled with a unique energy. Some say that it’s hard to fully explain what this week is like through words, but if you’ve been here before, you know what we’re referring to. Some have described it as a place of refuge from the hectic world. Others have recounted the feelings of honor and accomplishment associated with the opportunity to experience something that is often times a dream for many. Many of our volunteers refer to Miss Utah week as a “Pageant Christmas,” “Family Reunion,” or their version of “Summer Camp!”
Everyone who has been a part of the magical experience that Miss Utah provides can attest to the magic associated with this once in a lifetime opportunity. This week is much of what brings our volunteers back each year and inspires many others to serve in this scholarship opportunity for our strong young women of Utah.
Our goal this year is to continue the Miss Utah week magic and celebrate and honor all of those involved - the candidates, local and state volunteers, donors, sponsors, and most importantly, our supporters.
We are delighted and honored to welcome Emma Broyles, our current and the 100th Miss America, to our home state. We are excited to share with her
A new era in the Miss Utah program is ahead of us as we continue to settle back into a sense of normalcy. We recognize and honor the legacy and journey that have brought us to this point while continuing to move the program forward. There is a new energy in the air as we simultaneously celebrate the past, present, and future of Miss Utah. We are ready to welcome, embrace, encourage, and support all who want to be part of it.
Thank you for choosing to be part of this magical week. Again, welcome home, and welcome to the 2022 Miss Utah Scholarship Competition!
Sincerely,
Carly Condie

performance. After graduating, Emma plans to attend medical school to become a dermatologist, using her $109,000 in scholarships she has earned from the Miss America Organization.
Emma has spent over half of her life advocating for people with intellectual disabilities through her work with Special Olympics Alaska. Her older brother, Brendan, has Down syndrome and is a source of inspiration for her. When Brendan became a Special Olympics athlete at the age of 8, Emma started attending weekly track and field practices with him. She and her younger brother, Ben, enjoyed helping at the practices by chasing down balls during the tennis ball throw and running laps with the athletes. She grew up learning from these athletes, allowing her to develop an understanding of the importance of inclusion and empathy.
This understanding drove Emma to continue her involvement through Partners Club, a school program through Special Olympics Alaska. There, Emma served as co-president and had the chance to see relationships bloom between students with and without intellectual disabilities. She realized the significance in teaching students about inclusion and equipping them with the necessary tools to be leaders of social change in their communities.
Prior to becoming Miss Alaska, Emma held the title of Miss Alaska’s Outstanding Teen in 2017. At the Miss America 2022 Competition, she won a Preliminary Social Impact Pitch Award. Emma is the first Miss Alaska and Korean America to win the Miss America title.

The Miss Utah Scholarship Organization is continually recognized at the national level for our candidates’ strong fundraising efforts. Some fundraising highlights in recent years include:
2021: Recognized at Miss America as the TOP FUNDRAISING STATE. Miss Utah’s local and state candidates raised over $135,000 for MAO scholarships.
2019: Recognized at Miss America as the State Miracle Maker 1st Runner-Up. Miss Utah’s local and state candidates raised over $106,000 for CMN Hospitals and MAO scholarships.
2018: Recognized at Miss America as the State Miracle Maker 1st Runner-Up. Miss Utah’s local and state candidates raised over $83,000 for CMN Hospitals and MAO scholarships.

BAYLEI FOSTER IS THE TOP FUNDRAISER IN UTAH AND RAISED $2,050 FOR MAO SCHOLARSHIPS
“My first reason to start fundraising was to prove to myself that I can make a change. Being part of a movement to grow other young women’s confidence was motivation in itself because I once was an insecure girl who was scared to grow into who I am. Next was seeing the change in my mom as she went on her journey to find herself and grow into her mental illness known as bipolar disorder. Watching her come out of the shadows instead of hiding in them was a temendous inspiration. ”

MISS UTAH’S OUTSTANDING TEEN
The Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen (MUOTeen) program started in 2005 with the goal of encouraging positive achievement by nurturing scholastic achievement, healthy living, creative accomplishment, and community involvement in youth across the state. Among its initiatives, the MUOTeen program supports and rewards social impact, community service, talent, communication skills, and academic achievement.
As part of the Miss America Organization and the little sister program to Miss Utah, MUOTeen shares the values of style, scholarship, success, and service. Over 350 young women have competed on the MUOTeen stage, and hundreds more across the state have participated in the program on a local level. Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen not only helps these young women across the state pay for college and prepare for their future careers, but it also creates opportunities to gain additional life experience, work on relevant societal issues, enhance personal and professional skills, and develop performance-related and other talents.
SCHOLARSHIP
Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen is Utah’s premier scholarship program for teens and has been for the last 16 years. Scholarships are awarded to deserving young women on the basis of academic merit and civic and social achievement. Both cash and in-kind
in cash scholarships, in kind awards, and tuition waivers from partner universities. Since the program’s inception, MUOTeen state titleholders have collectively earned $140,000 in scholarship assistance paid to Brigham Young University, Harvard University, Utah State University, the University of Utah, Utah Valley University, and the Julliard School.

MEET JOCELYN OSMOND Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen
Jocelyn Osmond was crowned Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen on February 26, 2022. Hailing from Alpine, the 15-year-old is a sophomore at Lone Peak High School. Jocelyn received over $5,800 in scholarships with the title. At the competition, she won Preliminary Talent, Evening Gown & Onstage Question, and Lifestyle & Fitness Awards. She also received a Scholastic Achievement Award, the Overall Interview Award, the Top Instrumentalist Award, and was named as a Teens in Action finalist.
Jocelyn is preparing for the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Competition, which will be held in Dallas, TX in August. The Miss Utah Scholarship Organization is honored to have Jocelyn represent them and wishes her the best of luck!
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR GOAL OF BECOMING MISS UTAH’S OUTSTANDING TEEN?
Everyone has something they are struggling with, and often times it’s things that other people know nothing about. When COVID-19 hit, it was harder than ever to communicate and connect with friends. Teenagers today really are the “Quaren-teens!” They need to connect and share in each other’s struggles and successes. I knew I could be an advocate for teenagers and give them a voice by serving as Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen.
WHAT IS YOUR SOCIAL IMPACT INITIATIVE?
“I HEAR YOU!” I am passionate about making sure teenagers have a voice. One of the greatest challenges teenagers face today is that they
are being seen, but they are not being heard or understood. Teenagers have so much to contribute, and “MINORS can make a MAJOR difference!” I host the KSL Teen Talk radio show where I interview Utah’s educators, community leaders, celebrities, and heroes of all ages about all things that relate to teenagers. Check it out! @theteentalkshow
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE AS MISS UTAH’S OUTSTANDING TEEN?
I have two favorite experiences so farthe first was helping with a fundraiser for Ukraine at Strictly Ballroom, and the second was working with Carry from Regalia Magnificent Apparel and the “one and only” Sherri Hill, who helped design a competition dress to wear at the upcoming Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition in August.
WHAT ARE YOU INVOLVED IN OUTSIDE OF MISS UTAH’S OUTSTANDING TEEN?
I love to look for opportunities to learn and grow, so I stay very busy. In addition to hosting the KSL Teen Talk show, I am the Vice President of my school, a Lone Peak cheerleader, a dance company officer, a pianist, and a 4.0 student.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS.
1. Supportive
2. Ambitious
3. Passionate
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS WHO ASPIRE TO BE MISS UTAH’S OUTSTANDING TEEN?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AREA OF COMPETITION?
The personal interview. I love talking with people, and I’m passionate about creating opportunities for hope and healing by spreading awareness of the struggles that today’s teenagers are facing. One of my future goals is to be a broadcast journalist, so I love interviewing people and being interviewed.
DREAM BIG! It takes so much courage to put yourself out there on that stage, but you will learn and grow in ways that you would not have otherwise. I have so much respect for anyone who gets onstage to share their talents. Forget about yourself and serve because it really does bring the greatest amount of joy to you and those around you. Remember, strangers are just friends you have not met yet.

Little
The Little Miss program is a beloved tradition and a highlight of Miss Utah week. These girls not only perform and promenade onstage, but they also get a behind-the-scenes look at production, work hard to support their candidates, and get the opportunity to make lasting friendships. The Little Miss program inspires girls around the state to get involved in their communities and develop their talents. We hope they will return to the Miss Utah stage as candidates someday, and especially hope to see them crowned as Miss Utah!

Robyn pulham 2022 VOLUNTEER AWARD
Robyn Pulham has been involved in the Miss America Organization for over 23 years. She has served as the Executive Director of the Miss Provo Organization for the past 15 years and has judged numerous local competitions throughout the state. In Robyn’s words, she “loves being part of an organization that helps young women grow, strengthens their talents, and gives them the opportunity to earn scholarships to continue their education.”
Robyn exemplifies the Miss America Organization’s mission statement to prepare great women for the world and prepare the world for great women. She has long-mentored young women in Utah, both in and beyond her involvement in the Miss America Organization. She started, owned, and operated a cosmetic and aesthetics school, as well as multiple salons throughout Utah County and a salon distribution center.
Since Robyn started directing Miss Provo, her titleholders have placed in the Top 5 at Miss Utah six times, received two Preliminary Talent Awards, and received three Preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness awards.
Robyn goes above and beyond the call of a local director to develop lasting relationships with her candidates and titleholders. Past Miss Provos shared the following about Robyn:
“Robyn leads with love and is one of the most thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged people I have ever met.”
“She truly is an amazing example of kindness, positivity, and especially of service. So many early mornings, late nights, and everything in between for this competition and for our community.”
“Robyn provides the kind of quiet, steady support behind the scenes that
is grounding and confidence building. She genuinely cares and knows how to show it.”
“I am in awe of how many hours of service she gives because she loves helping people become the best version of themselves.”
Robyn also works to prepare the world around her for great women. She, her co-director Susan Bramble, and the rest of the Miss Provo board tirelessly work to advocate for scholarships and sponsorships. Through their community involvement, they have gained the support to ensure candidates have the best possible experience in the program. Outside of her service to Miss Provo, Robyn continues her community outreach with Provo’s Freedom Festival and other local projects. She is a beacon of service in the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization, and we are honored to recognize her with the 2022 Volunteer Award.

Lyle Larsen 2022 LEGACY AWARD
Lyle Larsen has been a decades-long volunteer, supporter, and mentor in the Miss America Organization. He was first involved with Miss Emery County in 1989 and has since served in numerous board roles for the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization and its local affiliates. Lyle has also judged dozens of local and state competitions across the country and even judged Katie Stam, who went on to become Miss America 2009. Lyle attended his first Miss America Competition in 1993 and has celebrated many birthdays on the Atlantic City Boardwalk during Miss America week. He is a beloved member of the pageant communityboth statewide and nationally.
When asked about Lyle, his friends through Miss Utah and other state organizations shared his impact through one common theme - love. They expressed the following:
“Lyle is everybody’s best friend! He
has mentored so many candidates and comforted so many anxious parents. He truly cares about all of us!”
“A person who most personifies the Miss America Program, who has the biggest heart, outgoing personality, warmest smile, is intelligent, well-spoken, talented, refined, and loving isn’t a candidate or a titleholder at all. It’s Lyle.”
“Lyle has a kind, generous, and compassionate heart. All who come in contact with him adore him.”
“When Lyle calls, you always pick up the phone because your day just got better.”
“Lyle Larsen has saved so many of us! He is always lifting and lightening our spirits every precious minute we are honored to be in his presence.”
“I don’t know another person who is as good, as kind, and as authentic as
Lyle. I am blessed to know him and to be loved by him.”
Though the Miss America Organization has undergone a variety of changes over the years, one thing has remained consistent - Lyle’s love for and support of our titleholders. When a new Miss Utah is crowned, she knows that in addition to the job, she also inherits a fiercely loyal cheerleader. Lyle rallies around all of Utah’s state titleholders and ensures that they feel prepared to hit the national stage with confidence. He knows how to express his love for them in a way that makes a genuine and lasting impact.
The Miss Utah Scholarship Organization has been changed for the better through Lyle’s love and service. We appreciate his continual support of our program and titleholders and the energy he brings to Utah’s pageant community. We are privileged to honor his light, heart, and warm smile this year with the 2022 Legacy Award.

SADIE HUISH AWARD
It was said that if you could bottle up Sadie’s laugh and sell it to the world, you would be rich! She had the greatest smile and most infectious laugh. She loved art, puzzles, reading, baking, dance, and playing the Wii. Sadie was the oldest of five girls and loved her family dearly. Her sisters were her best friends.
On March 3, 2008, a few months after her 5th birthday, we learned Sadie had a rare and inoperable brain stem tumor referred to as DIPG. Due to the tumor’s makeup and location, surgery wasn’t an option, and there was no proven effective treatment. We were told that within the year, Sadie would succumb to her disease.
Sadie fought with bravery. Throughout her battle, she had many tender mercies come her way, one of which was being chosen as “Little Miss Eagle Mountain” by Miss Eagle Mountain 2008, Kim Onions. She formed a special bond with Kim, as well as Miss Eagle Mountain 2009, Jessica Bare.
Sadie was too sick and weak to attend the Miss Utah 2009 Pageant. We were humbled when representatives from Miss Utah visited our home and presented Sadie with a beautiful, white Little Miss dress. Not long after this visit, and after an almost 16 month valiant battle, Sadie passed away on June 25, 2009 at the tender age of 6. As we prepared for her services, it seemed only fitting that she be laid to
rest as the princess she was. She was dressed in her Little Miss dress and crown.
We, as Sadie’s family, appreciate the Miss Utah Organization for honoring Sadie’s memory every year since her passing. As the competition always runs close to Sadie’s “angelversary,” it is a tender experience to award a Miss Utah candidate in her name. As hard as it is to choose just one candidate, we try to choose the young woman who has exemplified the most drive and passion for her social impact initiative, and who we feel Sadie would want us to pick! We are grateful for this blessing of continuing Sadie’s legacy in this capacity.
Kelly Hale was a dedicated volunteer in the Miss America Organization. He and Stan Stensrud co-directed the Miss Salt Lake County Competition for over 10 years, and his titleholders consistently placed in the top three at Miss Utah.
Kelly had a wit and charm that put contestants at ease when he was judging or helping them prepare for com-
petition. He volunteered for many years as a judge, director, and coach. Kelly’s titleholders often said that during their year of service as Miss Salt Lake County, they felt like they were receiving a four-year degree.
Kelly loved helping candidates in his program become the best they could be. He took great pride in each young woman, regardless of her background.
In the years following his directing, Kelly continued to support the Miss Utah Organization and was a regular at competitions each June. The Kelly Hale Non-finalist Awards in Private Interview, Talent, and Red Carpet have been created in his honor as a way to continue his passion for helping young women succeed in their scholastic endeavors.

BECOME A CANDIDATE
To compete for the title of Miss Utah, a candidate must first enter and win a local competition. This process requires hard work, talent, and personal commitment. Each year, hundreds of local candidates work to make a difference around the state of Utah as they develop awareness and opinions of current issues, establish personal social impact initiatives, and perform various service in their communities.
Participating in the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization is one of the most rewarding, life-changing experiences available to Utah’s young women, even if they don’t win a local title. In 2019, over $85,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to Miss Utah’s local candidates. To be eligible to compete, young women must be a U.S. citizen between 18-25 years of age, meet any residency requirements set forth by their local competition, and willing and able to fulfill the titleholder job requirements.
Kristin Chenoweth, Vanessa Williams, Sarah Palin, Carrie Underwood, and others participated in Miss America’s local competitions. The skills and talents they developed as local candidates in the Miss America Organization prepared them for the successful careers they lead now. You could be next!

Sasha Sloan MISS UTAH 2021
IS YOUR FAVORITE AVENGER?”
“WHO
I blinked at the small boy, grinning. Crowns are among the world’s most powerful kid magnets; a superpower that comes in situations like these. At 10:43am on a rainy April morning, I was ‘on the road’ at Lincoln Elementary, helping kindergartners spend imaginary cash on prizes for good behavior. My newfound friend and I stood before a steel cabinet that brimmed with toys and dollar-store goodies; he seemed torn between the urge to ogle at the prizes – which were, admittedly, cool – or the rhinestones on my Miss Utah sash, which shined in the warm fluorescent light. Quite absorbed, he nearly forgot I had asked him a question. Still beaming at me, he answered in a grave whisper, “Spiderman.” I nodded, and we moved to select a lego figurine that matched his preference.
Earlier that morning, I was wrought with anxiety. Should I wear my crown? Will they have too many volunteers…. Or not enough? However, as I stepped into the school, my nerves eased. The atmosphere felt distinctly familiar, even nostalgic. Lincoln Elementary is in the Granite School District, where
a majority of our state’s refugee students are resettled. My own elementary school sits only four miles north; I learned to speak Spanish in a dual language immersion program with approximately half of my classmates learning English as a second language. Maybe that’s part of why I choose Refugees Welcome as my social impact initiative as Miss Utah, and why I found volunteering at schools like Lincoln so cathartic. I checked with the front desk – yes, definitely, put on the crown – and one visit to the Faculty Lounge later, I was ‘suited up’ and prepared to engage in the important work of discussing superheroes with six-year-olds. Here’s a badly-kept secret: I’m a total nerd about fantasy books and movies. Luckily, fandom is a great conduit to connect with people. Whether you’re nine or ninety years old, it’s easy to bond over love of a movie, artist, or sports team. So I asked my new kindergarten friend another question – did he like Batman or Superman more? – and we launched into a detailed discussion.
During the same visit, I took a quick tour of the adult learning center and spoke briefly with parents, volunteers,
staff, and a social worker. It was an engaging, informative day – exactly the type of day I dreamed about for many years while working towards the job of Miss Utah. I have volunteered at United Way events like this for four years now, but I’m still working to get a comprehensive bird’s eye view of how dozens of relief efforts work together to support refugees in our state. At this point in my year of service (nearly 8 months in with the clock ticking), I’m feeling more settled in my role.
Touring schools this year has provided a unique glimpse into the challenges early educational institutions are facing in the post-COVID era. I have found that teachers and students alike are emotionally stretched thin after progressively uncertain years adapting to the pandemic. For that reason, I found that in the role of Miss Utah, my highest available calling during these visits was actually quite simple: to offer a bit of relief through human connection. I am there to be a helper; a cheerleader; a listening ear. Most importantly, Miss Utah’s directive is to show each person encountered that they are valued; to treat everyone like they’re royalty.
#missutorg 50
WHAT’S IN A CROWN?
I spent nearly half a decade working towards the opportunity to wear my Miss Utah crown. Naturally self-conscious, I sometimes feel silly at events with a sparkly accessory bobbing atop my head in its four-pointed glory. But here’s the crazy thing…. crowns work. It’s magic, or something near to it. Throughout the day at Lincoln, I watched students (and teachers) literally light up with confidence as ‘the queen of Utah’ took time to ask about their day and listen intently. Zoom out, and I’m just a girl in costume jewelry. But we – as a society – believe in the crown. We want to believe in the crown. That’s the magic of Miss Utah, the ‘pixie dust’ that makes her a force for good in the community. The crown– and accompanying legacy of the MUSO–offers a sense of legitimacy to a young female leader that is otherwise difficult to manufacture. Miss Utah’s sheen of celebrity uniquely positions her to impact our state. And what I especially love about the MUSO is that the charm takes turns; each year, a new woman is ushered into the spotlight and offered her chance to take the reins. Thus, the ideology of Miss Utah is rooted in an idea that is keenly and distinctly American: that any woman could be her; that any one of us, at any moment, could be swept away by our own wildest dreams.
HAPPY 100, MISS AMERICA
Miss America’s iconic white sash is a descendant of the suffragette uniform, a historical detail I attempted to pay homage to with my “Show Us Your Shoes” selection at the 100th Miss America Anniversary Celebration in Mystic, CT. Few institutions can boast that they have lasted a century. Miss America has survived as our nation’s foremost iconic symbol of femininity, even through three waves of feminism that have examined – and continue to examine – what the role of women actually is and should be in society. The continued relevance of the Miss America competition, in my opinion, is that the competition itself a fundamentally feminist concept.
Women – adult women – pursue Miss America because they choose to. It’s a sport to us; worth sacrificing, laboring, and anguishing over. For a small town girl without professional connections, Miss America offers a bona-fide oncein-a-lifetime shot at national exposure. In the same way that a little boy might dream of playing quarterback at the Superbowl, it’s valid for women to wish for a national competition that
gives them a shot at stardom and influence. It’s also valid for young women to dream of holding influence within their own communities. Miss Utah isn’t a beauty queen; she’s a leader. A MAO state title provides the organizational infrastructure and prestige that busts open doors and rolls out red carpets for social advocacy… all for an otherwise anonymous young woman. That’s powerful.
Plus, pursuing a ‘crown’ in MAO provides the opportunity to hold leadership within the organization itself. Many Miss America titleholders have pushed our program into the future through their own empowerment –Yolande Betbeze, Vanessa Williams and Cara Mund, to name a few. Thus, I love the Miss America organization for its history of incubating women leaders, and I’m deeply appreciative that MUSO helped me find my own voice. Collegiate women are infrequently presented with opportunities to air their opinions in a public forum; it’s even less often someone actually listens or cares. Yet, a crown changes that.
COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS
Looking back on my experience as Miss Utah– and the years leading up to it –it’s impossible not to humbly recognize the role of divine timing. I was in the right place at the right time, a blessing for which I will be forever grateful. I met Shurooq Al Jewari volunteering at the World Refugee Day celebration shortly after being crowned. She is an artist , ambitious advocate, and a future doctor. She is also a refugee. Most people are immediately struck by the differences between Shurooq and I; however, what Shurooq and I appreciate is our similarities. We share a passion for mental health advocacy, particular suicide prevention for marginalized teenagers. Over the course of six months, Shurooq and I worked together to create a Community Conversations workshop in partnership with the national advocacy group Their Story Is Our Story to foster conversations about inclusivity as it relates to mental health. The two of us were recognized with two national awards at Miss America for our social impact efforts; the Equity and Justice scholarship and the 2nd Place Overall Social Impact Award. Shurooq’s friendship was truly a godsend during my Miss Utah year; she inspires me daily with her brilliance, courage, and organization (which is way better than mine). We plan to continue our partnership after Miss Utah, and I can’t wait to cheer on Shurooq through all she will go on to achieve.
REFUGEES WELCOME When I won Miss Utah, I was both humbled and deeply intimidated by the opportunity to promote an SII centered on advocacy for asylum seekers. In 2019, I spent twelve hours a day volunteering in Moria, a cramped and overpopulated detainment facility for asylum seekers on a craggy island in Greece. The nonprofit group that I signed up with, Help International, made their expectations clear: I should approach the exchange primarily as an informative experience. ‘Voluntourism alone isn’t impactful. You need to learn about what’s happening to refugees and tell people what you saw, nonstop, for the rest of your life.’ I took their advice to heart. I dove deep into research surrounding refugee rights, migration patterns, and structural violence.
As Miss Utah, I knew I needed to be prepared to credibly defend myself in discussions surrounding contemporary policy. Immigration is a prickly topic. In an era where even seasoned politicians won’t speak plainly about human rights granted to migrants, many folks I encountered thought I had a lot of gumption promoting the welcoming of refugees. Opportunities to defend my views presented themselves often. During one particularly memorable luncheon address, a gentleman in attendance actually started shaking his head at my message. In what world could refugees be something we all agree on? However, two global events took place during my Miss Utah year
that I feel contributed towards a shift in public opinion, and brought refugee issues to the forefront.
In August, during my first few months on the job, the U.S. Military announced withdrawal from Afghanistan, marking the end of our nation’s longest war. Buzz swept over the state as Governor Cox signaled Salt Lake City would be welcoming an influx of allies fleeing Afghanistan. Then, in February of 2022, Russian military forces invaded Ukraine. More families fled, by the millions. Asylum seeking and the rights of displaced persons shifted, once again, to dominate national conversation. Promoting Refugees Welcome in the midst of these events has been the greatest honor of my life. It’s my optimistic hope that global conflicts remind us that their story is our story; meaning that any one of us, at any point, could become refugees, and thus we need to treat refugees with the dignity we would like for ourselves.

TO THE CLASS OF 2022, I’m going to teach you a new bit of vocabulary: Mjolnir. If you already knew it – congratulations! – you know it’s the name of Thor’s Hammer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Age of Ultron isn’t critically acclaimed, but there is one scene in the film that I loved: a comedic bit that takes place in Avengers Tower, where the crew takes turns attempting to Mjolnir while Thor watches on with mixed emotions. According to legend, only those ‘worthy’ can lift the magic hammer… but what that really means is, only one person can hold it an once.
Competing for Miss Utah (or chasing any other impossible dream) feels a little like that scene. You’re reaching for a tool – albeit more bedazzled than the hammer – that you hope will give you the power to be a force for good in the world. You’re not sure if you’ll be successful… but it’s worth giving it your best shot, right? Competition, by design, is an exercise in vulnerability. Putting ourselves out there to be judged is terrifying. However, there’s value in trying, even (and especially) when you might fail. Confidence comes from taking risks and having those risks rewarded – even when the rewards aren’t what you expect. I am tremendously proud of each of you competing this week. You are pursuing something extraordinary, and that takes courage. But my guess is… there might be times when you doubt yourself.
Through my years in MUSO, I’ve learned that all of us, at some point or another, wrestle with questions of worth. Am I good enough? Have I done enough? I’ve seen those questions hung in the eyes of teachers, wondering about their students fighting mental illness. I’ve heard it from teenagers as we spoke frankly about insecurities. I’ve encountered countless parents –especially in the migrant community – wracked with guilt over their child’s suffering in circumstances they did nothing to create. In these instances, there’s only one thing I could offer: A listening ear. Empathy. Assurance that I’ve struggled with the same thing. I approached MUSO for the first time as an insecure teenager, hoping to find inner value. However, the road to this job – with its humbling twists, turns, and misdirections – taught me a valuable lesson: nothing changes about a woman when her name is called and the confetti falls. Truthfully, anyone onstage this week could handily fill Miss Utah’s shoes. So the question isn’t if you can lift the magic hammer. The question is: what will you do with it?
#missutorg
LOOKING FORWARD, I see Miss Utah as someone that would fit in at Avengers Tower; committed to her values, fiercely protective of her community, and always ready to lend a helping hand. Excellence comes from all shapes, sizes, colors and my hope is that the Miss America Organization will continue to evolve in a way that recognizes and rewards the substance and achievements of women from all backgrounds. In coming years, I hope we can offer particular attention towards expanding opportunities for underrepresented voices. As Miss Utah continues to pivot in the 21st century, I hope we look to ask inwardly: how can we evolve the standard of ‘the ideal woman’ to reflect what is praiseworthy in society today? How can we expand the Miss Utah community to include more voices, backgrounds and viewpoints? I want Miss Utah to sit confidently at the decision-making table amongst lawmakers and community leaders. She’ll need sharp elbows, and detailed notes.
And if, by the end of your journey, you find yourself asking: “was I worthy?”… know that the answer was always, always yes.
THANK YOU to all of our fabulous Miss Utah sponsors for keeping me safe and stylish during this whirlwind year! Thank you to Their Story is Our Story and Granite Education Foundation for your partnership in my social impact efforts. Thank you to the Miss Utah board, my beloved travel companions Dawn and Julie, all of the Miss Utah state and local volunteers, titleholders and family members for your part in making the magic happen, for me and every other participant. From the day I signed up as a teen competitor, I have been SO blessed by the support and guidance of countless volunteers in this organization that sacrificed their time and donated their efforts to turn this pumpkin into a stagecoach.
section, and to my parents for teaching me to follow my dreams. I love you SO much & do everything to make you proud! To Christian: thanks for the graph and everything else. I love you.
Miss Utah was something beyond my wildest dreams. I’m forever grateful. To every other person that has uplifted and supported me through this life-changing journey, whether it was a kind word or a DM or even tagging me in a meme on TikTok – Thank you. I love you. I hope to pay it forward, and I will treasure this experience forever.
Signing off for the last time, I’m Miss Utah 2021, Sasha Sloan.

THE NEXT MISS
UTAH, Buckle up, honey, you’re in the ride of your life! Trust yourself. It can be lonely underneath the weight of many eyes, expectations and opinions. Take it one day at a time, and try to follow Cinderella’s advice: Have Courage and Be Kind. Find every opportunity to compliment, uplift, and include. At each event, find the person in your path who needs your positivity– if you set intentions, they will be there! Guard against gatekeeping, and be generous about sharing your insight and expertise. Foster community over competition; a rising tide lifts all boats in the water, and there’s room for everybody at the top. T Swift said it best: “... we see you over there on the internet / comparing all the girls who are killing it/ but we figured you out, / we ALL got crowns / you need to calm down.” Most importantly, give it your ALL, because the year flies by!
Thank you to Katina, Jessica, Carlisle and the entire GSL family for their endless work to prepare me for each competition. You truly made my “impossible dream” a reality, and I will forever cherish the hours that we spent in the Skyridge dance room practicing! Thank you to Kellie and the rest of the Davis County team for believing in me, even before I believed in myself. To each of the previous Miss Utah titleholders that mentored me in some way, thank you for your kindness and contributions to this program. To the Sorensen family, the Craig family, Kasidy & Kennedy, Lyle Larsen, Amy Rasmussen, Stephanie Gallagher, and Steve Phan – thank you for lifting and encouraging me over the years! To my Little Miss Utah Addi – you are the most special little girl in the world. I feel so lucky I got to be your honorary big sister this year!
Thank you to my rowdy family for being the world’s most enthusiastic cheering

United We Stand: Promoting Civility in Politics
The celebration of political diversity is slowly being devalued today. Many Pew Research studies indicate that America is more politically divided than at any other point in history. It is important to help all citizens, regardless of political stance, realize that we generally have the same end goals. It is up to each of us to engage in the political process and focus on what unites us. We cannot forget that we are stronger together.

They can be anything and do anything, and by giving them access to literature, we are improving our future generation.

SOCIAL IMPACT INITIATIVE Donor Connect
Having my eight-month-old cousin die was hard; however, when he was able to donate his organs and save three lives, it wasn’t as difficult. Through the Gift from Grady Foundation, I have prompted organ donation by answering questions, attending events, holding auctions to help pay donor families’ hospital bills, and talked about the myths of organ donation. While learning that there is not an age limit for organ donation.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ADVENTURE?
When my sister and I went to State FCCLA and State FBLA. Being able to spend hours with my best friend without our parents there telling us what we could and couldn’t do was fun. Most important though, was the memories that came when we competed in these clubs. We made a project together and spent so much time laughing. Watching my sister’s confidence grow each time we presented was so much fun. To say the least, it was an adventure, and I would live it a hundred times over again.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED, AND FROM WHOM?
When I was mad at a lot of people, my mom told me, “Just let it go, and everything will turn out how it needs to.” That stuck with me because I was wasting my time being mad at someone when I could be happy and help myself and others around. So I have made a point to just let it go and forget about it because being angry isn’t worth my time.

I am the youngest certified balloon artist and marketer in the nation. When I was eight years old, I started a business with my sister called The Helium Sisters. My social impact initiative holds a special place in my heart! After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, I fell into a deep depression. I want to use my title as a catalyst in providing resources that our community needs to battle mental and physical health. I am a leader, advocate, and an ally for those who are dealing with the challenges that accompany mental and physical illness.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
George Balanchine looked at something as timeless as ballet and decided to not change it, but instead innovate the movement. His work has changed the world of ballet. Many people admire his ballets and style of dance. I admire him because he was not afraid to make an impact on the world, even if it meant disrupting a timeless movement.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ADVENTURE?
At the age of 16, I was accepted into a dance program in North Carolina. My amazing mom put me on a plane, and I moved across the country by myself. Confidence in Me: Building Confidence Through the Arts
Our world is fighting a huge battle with mental health, now more than ever. I feel that my social impact initiative can make an impact on that struggle. I have seen the affects of the arts on many people who are facing difficulty with mental health, and I have had many discussions with people who have personally experienced its benefits. People need to start recognizing how “enough” they are.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
I look up to Eve (as in Adam and Eve) immensely. Regardless of your religious beliefs, she is an immensely impressive woman. Throughout history she has been misjudged, blamed, and disdained by many for being “weak.” I do not believe she was weak at all, but that she was one of the most courageous and confident people to have ever existed. She was educated, she was strong, and despite popular belief, she stood at the same level as Adam, her male counterpart, and he was not her superior. She stood up for her beliefs regardless of the fears she had and the unknown consequences.

For Utahns ages 10-24, suicide is the leading cause of death. It is 8th overall in the state. One in four of us battle mental illness; 70 of us are treated for self-inflicted injuries every day - almost 26,000 Utahns per year. Organizations such as NAMI and AFSP offer resources and training to combat this epidemic. We can’t fix everything, but we can change the dialogue that surrounds it. We are here for you.

Women and Children First: Providing Support for Those in Crisis
Poverty is a serious problem for thousands of Utah women. A 2017 study found that 158,000 Utah women and girls lived in poverty. Preventing and supporting women and children in poverty can have a lasting impact on their emotional and physical wellness, and strengthen our community as a whole. The essential component needed to lift women out of poverty is community support involving education, reducing the gender wage gap, and developing policy and programs to help advance women.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
Nellie Ross became the first female American governor when her husband, who was governor of Wyoming, died in office. In 1933, she also became the first female director of the United States Mint and served five terms as director. The courage Nellie had to do something new and impactful for her community - while also grappling with the grief of losing her husband - is inspiring. She did all of this while also being a single mother to her three children. The ‘D’ Word: Removing Shame Associated with Dyslexia
There is so much shame associated with dyslexia, to the point where people are scared to get diagnosed. Talking openly about dyslexia is one of the first steps to help people. When we talk openly, the shame goes away. Two thirds of prison inmates are dyslexic. Many dyslexics give up in school because the school systems are not given proper interventions to educate a dyslexia student. I would advocate removing shame associated with dyslexia.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
I have always admired John Hancock. He had the courage to not only sign his name to a document he believed in, but he wanted to be sure people could read his name. The signature was a act of treason, but he believed in the cause. I strive to have the courage to stay true to my beliefs.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED, AND FROM WHOM?
To be defined by my abilities, not my disabilities. When I was diagnosed with dyslexia, it was so easy for me to focus on the bad parts of it. My mother helped me to see that because of my dyslexia, I have so many gifts, and not to focus on the bad, but instead finding the good and running with it.

Social media has become one of the top online activities. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing global pandemic, children and adolescents are required to spend more time online. Safe Scrolling is focused towards educating individuals of all ages about the downfalls of social media use and how to protect themselves online.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Outnumbered, ridiculed, chided, and involved in a very male-dominated, hostile environment, RBG never backed down. She excelled in her fight for gender equality. It was never about gaining more than men, it simply regarded that all individuals are created equal and should be treated that way. In today’s era of 30-second videos, many children are losing touch with reading as a basic life skill. Currently, there are 45 million Americans who are functionally illiterate and cannot read above a fifth-grade level. I can’t think of a more important social impact initiative than increasing literacy in children. Being a good reader will impact them throughout their lives and help them become leaders in the future.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
Julia Ward Howe. She was a talented musician who wrote one of the most popular American patriotic songs in our history, “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” She was also an advocate for abolitionism and a social activist, particularly for women’s suffrage. Having confidence is a skill that will pave the way to better relationships, career goals, and overall interpersonal skills. Anyone and EVERYONE deserves to love who they see when they look in the mirror, although it can sometimes be difficult to achieve. The only way to tackle this issue is by implementing the following elements: manifesting, empowering others, service, and self-awareness. Mastering these skills is pivotal to the human experience.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED, AND FROM WHOM?
Candilyn Newell, a professor at BYU and one of my most influential mentors, told me, “you can do anything you want, but you can’t do everything.” This really resonated with me, as I tend to have a personality that wants to do everything all at once. She reminded me that it is not physically possible to do this, and that it’s okay to just take life one day at a time.

I also believe that these talents were meant to be shared with the world. As someone who has discovered their talent, dance, I want to share this talent and joy with others. I have created a way in which people can share their talents through my platform.
WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE MOST SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
I am also a “nerd” and sometimes an introvert. A perfect day to me would be sitting somewhere out in nature, alone, reading a book, or staying in, cozied up, watching a documentary on outer space. Because of my social media and overall demeanor, I am portrayed otherwise, hence why people wouldn’t suspect the nerd or introvert in me. Fighting loneliness with letter writing can benefit multiple generations. Adolescent depression is increasing at an alarming rate. Recent surveys indicate that as many as one in five teens suffer from clinical depression. I believe that sharing experiences through letters can alleviate loneliness and depression in both generations.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
When I was younger, it seemed every family vacation was based around a new airplane museum. From a young age, my dad tried to instill in me all his knowledge of aviation. Nothing really stuck until I learned about Amelia Earhart. I was drawn in by her strength, by her ability to stand out as a woman, and to break barriers in a field dominated by men. Enrichment Through the Arts: Engage with the Arts, Enrich Your Life
Since art can be a universal form of communication, all people can benefit from discovering their personal artistic voice. Through art, we can learn about history, ideas, and our true identity. The arts are confidence building, self-affirming, and identity forming by providing a means for us to learn, self-express, and connect with others. Art can give people something to live for, and it brings creativity, passion, and human connection to their lives.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
I really admire Catherine de Medici. She was queen consort of France from 1547-1559 and the mother of three French kings. Catherine was known as the queen of the arts and brought ballet, fine art, music and architecture from Italy to France upon her marriage to Henry II. It is because of Queen Catherine that we have modern day ballet. As with many European queens, her life story is quite convoluted, however I admire her patronage of the arts and the actions she took to educate those around her on new and exciting art forms.

Unique Begins with YOU: Cut the Comparison
My social impact initiative uplifts others by encouraging self confidence. I have strived to remove negative comparison from others’ lives by promoting the practice of these six simple steps: 1. Positive Affirmations, 2. Service, 3. Cleaning out social media, 4. Spirituality, 5. Healthy habits, 6. Gratitude.
Implementing these practices in our lives boosts self esteem, lowers the risk of negative mental health and creates a happier environment.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
Jesus, because despite all of the persecution and hate, he loved others. He repeatedly forgave when he was wronged. He spent his whole life serving others. These are skills I strive to practice in my life.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED, AND FROM WHOM?
My director once told me that my greatest competitor is myself. I love this because it truly pushed me to become the best version of myself without worrying about what everyone else was doing around me.

When I was 11 years old, my little brother was diagnosed with cancer. Because of the extensive amounts of medical debt that my family acquired, we lost everything including our home in attempts to pay for cancer treatment. Without the support that we had received from others, my family would not be where we are today. Through education, guidance, and support, I strive to advocate for our youth experiencing poverty.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE?
“Life is like a book. There are good chapters, and there are bad chapters. But when you get to a bad chapter, you don’t stop reading the book! If you do... Then you never get to find out what happens next.”
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ADVENTURE?
My greatest adventure began when I was diagnosed with Pectus Excavatum. This is a condition that caused my chest to concave, my heart to enlarge/displace, and both of my lungs to collapse. I had no choice but to undergo an invasive surgery to place a metal bar in my chest as a support mechanism to keep my thoracic cavity intact.

Believe in Yourself, You’re Worth It
Today we live in a society that tells us we need to look and act a certain way, and if we don’t, we aren’t good enough. We are all unique. We all look, act, and believe differently. I myself have struggled with this, but with a good support system and daily reminders that it’s okay to stand out and be different, we can make a change in the world and see beauty in everyone.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
Rosa Parks. She believed in freedom, and she also believed that we should all be treated the same. Through her strength and bravery, she was an example to many.

Success 101
My social impact initiative focuses on educating people how to prepare for their future through setting goals. Many do not realize that planning out your ideas can help in the long run. It is as easy as four steps: 1. Defining what you want, 2. setting your goals, 3. developing a plan, and 4. achieving your dream. Making stepping stones to go off of help form the idea into a plan, until those ambitions are met.
WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE MOST SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
People are always surprised to learn that I was born in Japan. My father was in the Marine Corps at the time, and I was born on an American base in a small island south of Japan.

Healthy, Happy, and Free: The Movement Towards Meditation
Meditation is the one human activity that’s unlike any other. This is because it’s not an activity, it’s a state of being. For example, when you think about throwing a ball, you’re not playing out the trajectories in the physics of throwing. Instead, you are living in the moment. You are feeling. You are being. We need to do a better job at feeling this presence. It has a huge impact on our health.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
Alberta King’s legacy is deeply woven into Martin Luther King Jr.’s legendary story. Alberta gave up her career dreams to become a wife and a mother, as it was the law at the time. She was a behind-the-scenes supporter and mentor for the cause, and she was also assassinated alongside it. She is a selfless inspiration for women and mothers around the world.
WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE MOST SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
I kiteboard. Kiteboarding is an extreme sport that a lot of people don’t know exists. Invisible Trauma to Seeable Triumph
In Utah alone, 67 people sustain a brain injury daily. In one year, around 200,000 are hospitalized for a TBI. Half of the TBI-related deaths in the U.S. are caused by suicide. When I was challenged with a brain injury, luck was not the reason I survived. I am still here today so I can raise awareness of the lives interrupted by brain injury and inspire victims to become victors.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ADVENTURE?
In the summer of 2018, I spent a week in New York City. Surrounded by commotion, I found myself alive with excitement, yet comfortable. I spent days on the busy streets of Times Square and serene moments protected by the trees of Central Park. I toured Julliard and attended several stunning Broadway productions. This trip both sparked and solidified a dream of mine: One day I will live and perform in New York City.

My goal through my social impact initiative is to bring positivity and optimism to every conversation about climate change and inspire action in Utah’s communities. Together we can Heal Our Planet’s Ecosystems.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
Benazir Bhutto was a strong female figure in history that I only learned about recently. She made strides toward equality as the first female prime minister of Pakistan and really showed the world of what women are capable of, just as I hope to do.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED, AND FROM WHOM?
“She believed she could, so she did.” My mother has always been my biggest cheerleader, and she first shared this wisdom with me when I was 14 years old and doubting myself, as I believe most 14 year old girls do at some point. To this day, those same words of wisdom often remind me that I am capable of anything and everything that I set my mind to.

Outnumber Hunger: Food Insecurity Awareness
One in eight Utah children experiences food insecurity, leading to poor academic and social growth. Raising awareness for food insecurity includes advocating for solutions to address food security such as policies that would allow for increased economic stability, increase SNAP benefits, and increase awareness for community food pantries. I have spent over 60 hours working in food banks and hosting my own food drives, partnering with organizations like Move For Hunger and Feeding America.
WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU LOOK UP TO MOST AND WHY?
Princess Diana has always been an example of standing up for something she believed in and for making her own personal happiness a priority. As I advocate for improving access to food for children in Utah, I hope that I too will be remembered for standing up when it matters.

broyles Miss America 2022
emma
Emma Broyles is a second generation Alaskan born and raised in Anchorage. She is a junior at Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University where she studies biomedical sciences and voice performance.
This understanding drove
her to continue her involvement through Partners Club, a school program through Special Olympics Alaska. There, Emma served as co-president and had the chance to see relationships bloom between students with and without intellectual disabilities. She realized the significance in teaching students about inclusion and equipping them with the necessary tools to be leaders of social change in their communities. As Miss Alaska, she toured schools to spread the message of inclusion, working closely with Special Olympics school programs in her hometown.
Miss America serves to demolish stereotypes about women and show the world that outward appearance should never determine someone’s worth. Similarly, Special Olympics strives to promote an Inclusion Revolution, encouraging people all around the world to celebrate one another’s abilities rather than focusing on our di erences. Special Olympics works to spread compassion and acceptance in a way that can unite the world. As Miss America, Emma will continue to act as an advocate for Special Olympics on an even wider scale to ultimately mend communities one connection at a time.
I was a senior in high school when a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit my hometown. As the floor shook and the walls rattled around me, I dove under a table and hung on for dear life. Everything around me had shifted.
When I’m asked about what was going through my head when I was named Miss America 2022, I’m reminded of that feeling during the earthquake. The big, shiny stage on which I was standing no longer felt stable. It all felt like a dream. I heard the audience cheering, felt the crown as Camille Schrier pinned it to my shaking head. Tears filled my eyes as I looked up, watching the confetti begin to fall. I remember turning around to face my Miss America classmates, unsure of what to do or what just happened. They held me up, fixed my crown, and wiped my tears, bringing me back to reality. They reassured me and celebrated with me and on that night, I truly understood the meaning of the Miss America sisterhood.
Having the Forever Miss Americas on the stage with me on this life-changing night reminded me of the rich history and powerful impact the Miss America Organization has had on all of us who have ever stepped foot on a Miss America stage from locals to nationals. I felt humbled by their presence, knowing that it’s up to me to honor their legacy and that of the Miss America Organization as we head into the next 100 years.
Years from now, I hope to look back at 2022 and feel that I made a difference as Miss America. That we will all be kinder to one another, and not just to those with whom we agree. That we will be more accepting of others, especially those with whom we have the least in common. And most of all, that we will have compassion for those we understand the least.
I’m honored to be Miss America 2022 and look forward to my year of representing this country that my grandparents chose and representing this organization that has made such a tremendous impact on the lives of young women for the past 100 years.
