“The happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more."

- H Jackson Brown, Jr.

Margana Wood will be celebrating 10 years of involvement with the Miss Texas Organization next summer. She first competed in the teen program in 2011, and served as Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen in 2012. During her year of service, she promoted her social impact “Nice Kids Rule,” a campaign that addressed the hidden signs and effects of teen bullying. Her social impact stemmed from her personal experience of having been bullied throughout Middle and High School. After serving as the teen state titleholder, Margana attended the University of Texas at Austin where she earned her degree in Corporate Communications and a minor in Rhetoric & Writing. While preparing to return to compete for Miss Texas, Margana was encouraged to change her social impact initiative to a more mature topic. However, she argued that her message was relevant

Margana was awarded nearly $75,000 in scholarships during her year of service, some of which she applied towards earning her Masters Degree from the University of Westminster in London, United Kingdom. “Why not advance my education and travel the world at the same time? As if nothing could top my year as Miss Texas, it was easily one of the greatest experiences of my life.” After graduating with honors last November, she moved to Washington DC to start her career in the events industry. Margana recently moved back Texas and resides in Austin. In an effort to continue paying it forward and making others feel cared for, Margana and her family have become loyal donors to the Miss Texas Scholarship Foundation. “My family and I have witnessed the positive impacts of this organization first-hand. From my own personal growth beyond years of bullying, to the opportunities awarded as a local and state titleholder, and the financial assistance to pursue a higher education." Margana is a member of both the Pink and Yellow Rose Societies, contributing annually and continuing to make an impact. She also created her own “Random Acts of Kindness” Scholarship, which she awards to one Teen and Miss candidate at random each year. “I feel so grateful to be involved with an organization that provides professional and scholastic opportunities to beautiful, talented, and intelligent young women across the state. It’s the least we can do to continue paying it forward.” Thank you to Margana and the Wood family for your continued support of the Miss Texas Organization and Scholarship Foundation!

L O N E S T A R C L U B WRITTEN BY CELESTE LAY Miss Fort Worth's Outstanding Teen

Hello everyone, my name is Celeste Lay and I am Miss Fort Worth’s Outstanding Teen! I am thrilled to say that I have been involved in the Miss Texas Organization since I was 11 years old. I started out in the Lone Star Princess program, which was not only a blast but very educational. During Miss Texas week, the LSP’s got to enjoy a fun camp. I remember getting to dance on stage at the Miss Texas pageant to “Happy”, participate onstage in the Dillard’s fashion show and do an etiquette class where I learned about table place setting and how to be a lady at a luncheon or at a dinner party!!

I was also able to see behind the scenes of the pageant world and be mentored by the Miss Texas title holders during Miss Texas week. As a titleholder now, I see the importance and impact I have on all of our Lone Star Princesses! Because of COVID-19, the Miss Texas and Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen competition had to be postponed until 2021. COVID-19 did not stop this fabulous organization from having our amazing Lone Star Princess camp which is known as the Lone STAR Club!!

I was honored to be a host for the very first Lone STAR Club zoom session! I decided that I would create a fun game to play and get the girls excited since they probably had been mostly stuck inside, plus as a bonus, they were able to win some fun prizes! Princess Trivia was the game! Very simple yet super fun! I decided to add a twist to the game and whoever got the most points won a $15 gift card to Target and whoever got the second most points won a $10 gift card to Starbucks! At the end of the zoom I put all the girls' names in a hat (who had not already won a prize) and drew a name, and the lucky winner won a $10 gift card to Starbucks!! Each question was based on Miss Texas week. For example, What is the color of the Lone Star Princess dress? What is another name for the flower room? How many points are on the Lone Star Princess crown? I had so much fun designing a fun activity to do during quarantine and giving these girls a glimpse into what Miss Texas week will be like!

There is a Princess inside all of us Sheridan Garbe, Miss Frisco’s Outstanding Teen A sea of white dresses, sparkling crowns and smiles as big as Texas is an annual scene as dozens of girls, ages 5-12, take the stage at Miss Texas with a dream of one day becoming Miss America. Looking at that group, you may not immediately recognize that under those crowns are some girls with with intellectual and developmental disabilities, hearing impairments, and several across the vast spectrum of Autism. Fortunately for young women the diverse and inclusive nature of the Miss Texas Organization creates an environment making it possible for each to wear a crown, and it all begins at the Princess level. When I first became part of the Miss Texas Program, I was a 5 year old Lone Star Princess with a little sister who has Down syndrome. Besides living with my sister, I really hadn’t had much opportunity to be involved in any program where children with disabilities were included. As I got older and had the opportunity to be a National Princess at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition, I made fast friends with the most precious princess from Arkansas, who just happened to have Down syndrome. In that moment, I realized that my sister would one day be able to experience the same program that I loved so much. Equally important, and although I didn’t realize it at the time, the moment would plant the seeds of what would become my platform all these years later. What I love about our Lone Star Princess program is how it focus on ability, not disability. The little ladies are out there doing what everyone else is doing, whatever that may be. The program fosters the idea that girl’s dreams of becoming a princess can come true. It also provides girls the opportunity, and in some instances, the first opportunity, to get to know others who may be a bit different, but have their own special gifts to give. This early experience for girls helps spark interest in volunteerism, leadership and mentorship. These life skills are an important cornerstone to the growth of each princess as she ages through the program. Like the Miss and Teen programs, the Princess program has evolved over the years. For me, I am so grateful for my own life having been enriched by the lives of all the girls. Miss America and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen welcomes and celebrates each girl’s differences and unique qualities, resulting in beautiful friendships and lasting memories. As a teen contestant, looking at the stage, not one girl is the same. As contestants, our social impacts and platform statements focus on bettering our communities and taking our passions and turning them into programs where we can advocate, support, and bring awareness to varying issues. October is Down syndrome awareness month and I invite each of you to support a Buddy Walk, Special Olympics virtual event, and/or make a donation to a local organization that supports inclusive living opportunities. B.E.E. the One!

legacy society ANDREA BERRY STANLEY HOW I GOT INVOLVED / WHY I COMPETED I grew up attending Miss Texas and my mother, Donna Berry, was the business manager for Miss Atlanta, Cyndee Freeman. I remember going on many shopping trips to buy her wardrobe for the week. I was 5 at the time and my childhood dream was to be Miss Texas one day. In 1990, my pursuit began by competing in the first Miss Teen Texas competition and continuing to compete during the following two years. After High School, I attended college at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. With college life, I decided the pageant scene was more fun to attend instead of compete. I did compete and place in Miss Dallas 1993 as my one and only prelim to Miss Texas.

texas cares for children ENCOURAGING LEADERSHIP PROMOTING EDUCATION DEVELOPING CHARACTER

The Texas Cares For Children program was created to address social inequality on a peer-to-peer level through leadership development, community partnerships and training. Texas Cares For Children, a 501(c)(3), strives to bring life skills, values education, and leadership into schools; demonstrating the importance of setting personal and educational goals; teaching students how to stand up to negative peer pressure and turn it into positive peer pressure and establishing lifelong healthy practices. The initial program was developed in 1993 through collaborative efforts with the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and won the endorsement of former

former President George Bush and then Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander. The concept is to help each individual participant develop and improve his or her capabilities through instruction and training which in turn benefits the community as a whole. By sharing a platform about which an individual is passionate, each participant not only teaches, but learns. Participants learn about character building and life skills, making healthy choices and wellness practices part of their lifestyle, effectively dealing with bullying and peer pressure, overcoming adversity and challenges, understanding and respecting one another’s differences and combating drug and alcohol abuse.

The Lone Star Mentoring Program is a year-round program where your princess will be mentored and have the opportunity to learn from the Miss Texas and Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen program's leaders and role models. Princesses will watch these intelligent young women as they communicate, perform, and interact with others. Each exhibits strength, character, poise and grace under pressure while sharing their social impact initiative and serving their communities. The Lone Star Competition experience (the week of June 20 - 26, 2021) is a fun-filled week of activities, rehearsals and performances. Participants will enjoy lunch with their titleholder, take part in a fashion show, attend a real Princess party, and perform in a group production number on the Miss Texas stage. Our Lone Star Princesses do not personally compete, but they accompany their titleholder during the Red Carpet competition, as the titleholders compete in their Evening Wear. This special event is held during Miss Texas and Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen Competition week (June 20 - 26, 2021).
