2020 VISION ONE YEAR AGO, I HAD THE BEST TIME IN INTERVIEW POURING MY HEART OUT, LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY AND SHARING STORIES. THE BEST FEELING LEAVING INTERVIEW IS BEING CONTENT AND CONFIDENT THAT YOU REMAINED YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF. I DIDN’T KNOW A FEW NIGHTS LATER, MY LIFE WOULD COMPLETELY CHANGE BUT I DID KNOW FROM THIS 10 MINUTE DISCUSSION, I FELT EMPOWERED TO TAKE MY LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY TO THE NEXT LEVEL. A WHOLE YEAR LATERExclusive AND IT’Sinterview STILL with ONE OF MY DREAM JOBS.

texas cares for children ENCOURAGING LEADERSHIP PROMOTING EDUCATION DEVELOPING CHARACTER

The Texas Cares For Children program was created to address social inequality on a peer-to-peer level through leadership development, community partnerships and training. Texas Cares For Children, a 501(c)(3), strives to bring life skills, values education, and leadership into schools; demonstrating the importance of setting personal and educational goals; teaching students how to stand up to negative peer pressure and turn it into positive peer pressure and establishing lifelong healthy practices. The initial program was developed in 1993 through collaborative efforts with the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and won the endorsement of former

former President George Bush and then Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander. The concept is to help each individual participant develop and improve his or her capabilities through instruction and training which in turn benefits the community as a whole. By sharing a platform about which an individual is passionate, each participant not only teaches, but learns. Participants learn about character building and life skills, making healthy choices and wellness practices part of their lifestyle, effectively dealing with bullying and peer pressure, overcoming adversity and challenges, understanding and respecting one another’s differences and combating drug and alcohol abuse.

REMEMBERING

PHYLLIS GEORGE MISS AMERICA 1971

M

iss America 1971 Phyllis George paved the way for women in television and was the epitome of class and elegance. She catapulted to national fame when she won the coveted Miss America title and has remained a fan favorite for many years. Shortly after the golden anniversary crown was placed on her head, the pins gave way and it hit the runway. “I thought, ‘You can’t leave it there,’ so I bent down and carried it,” she told The Press of Atlantic City in 2013. “I had flowers and a scepter in one hand and a crown in the other.” She was proud of her

Denton, Texas upbringing where she she dreamed of a classical pianist career while attending the University of North Texas. Though she did not become a professional pianist, Ms. George did become a pioneer for women in sports television, paving the way for female sportscasters. We not only lost a member of the Miss Texas family, but an incredible woman, mother, grandmother and friend. The Miss Texas Organization sends our deepest condolences to all who loved Phyllis George as we mourn her passing.

ESPN SPORTSCASTER HANNAH STORM ON PHYLLIS GEORGE'S IMPACT

“A LOT OF TIMES WHEN YOU’RE DREAMING OF SOMETHING AS A CAREER OPTION, YOU HAVE TO SEE IT IN ORDER TO BELIEVE IT AND SOMEONE HAS TO BE FIRST, AND THAT WAS PHYLLIS.” As shared in a recent ESPN article where Storm remembered George for inspiring women who dreamed of sportscasting careers

On June 28, 2003, after being loved and cared for by the Graves family for the first 17 months of her life, a Texas child was ordered to be placed back in the custody of her biological family. She entered a life of abuse and neglect. On June 28, 2007, someone walked into a room and saw this child being abused by a family member The witness reported the situation to authorities and the child was removed from her biological family's custody. This young girl underwent a forensic interview and ultimately was placed in foster care. She never returned to the home of her abusers. On June 28, 2009, this child stood before a packed auditorium in Richardson, Texas as Allie Grace Graves, an overcomer. Allie was crowned Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen 2019 that evening and celebrated the victory with her family, the Graves. This significant date had altered the course of her life twice before and Allie set forth on a new journey, determined to lead with love. Allie feels that God chose her to serve as a reminder that you are never defined by your circumstances, a message she shares often as the state's teen representative.

LONE STAR PRINCESS LIFE PARTICIPATE | PRESENT | PERFORM

The Lone Star Mentoring Program is a yearround program where your princess will be mentored and have the opportunity to learn from the Miss Texas and Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen program's leaders and role models. Princesses will watch these intelligent young women as they communicate, perform, and interact with others. Each exhibits strength, character, poise and grace under pressure while sharing their social impact initiative and serving their communities. Alongside the Lone Star Princess program is the newly created Lone STAR Club, which debuted in July 2020. This program provides the opportunity for every princess to feel like a STAR. Participants enjoy access to monthly events and opportunities throughout the year. These young women will develop communication skills and learn how to make a difference in her community. They will also be showcased in video and zoom opportunities where they learn how to be comfortable

in front of a camera, computer, or even in person as they expresses themselves while speaking and/or performing. Each month our registered Princesses will receive information on the upcoming STAR activity! The Lone Star Competition experience (the week of June 20 - 26, 2021) is a fun-filled week of activities, rehearsals and performances. Participants will enjoy lunch with their titleholder, take part in a fashion show, attend a real Princess party, and perform in a group production number on the Miss Texas stage. Our Lone Star Princesses do not personally compete, but they accompany their titleholder during the Red Carpet competition, as the titleholders compete in their Evening Wear. This special event is held during Miss Texas and Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen Competition week (June 20 - 26, 2021). Visit www.misstexas.org for more information on joining the Lone Star Mentoring Program.
