Letter from Executive Director Welcome to the Miss Southlake Organization I am a beneficiary of the outstanding legacy of the Miss Texas and Miss America Organizations. As a local titleholder, I competed four times with four different organizations before I was selected to serve as Miss Texas 2012. Each of my local directors and boards gave countless time, energy, talents, and resources to help shape me into who I am today. Although several years have passed since I served as Miss Texas, my heart has never left this organization. The life skills that you learn through competing and serving as a titleholder aid you in every area of your life. That is ultimately why I decided to come back as a local director. I am excited to hit the ground running with innovative ideas to enrich the legacy of this program.

Preparing Women for the Stage and Beyond A major component of Miss Texas and Miss America is the competition. I have spent a majority of my life in different types of competitions. I began my competitive years in twirling, transitioned to the Miss America local, state, and national stage, and now compete in the courtroom. I know about the persistence and drive that it takes to train like a champion. We have assembled an exciting team of talented people who also know what it takes to reach the next level.

Preparing Great Women for the World As the largest scholarship provider for women, Miss America funds the academic dreams of its participants. Thanks in part to my scholarships from local competitions, Miss Texas, and Miss America, I graduated debt-free. As Malala Yousafzai said, “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” We are striving to increase the amount of scholarship assistance we can provide to our representatives and all of our candidates.

Preparing the World for Great Women Women’s voices are being heard like never before. We want to build on that movement by developing our representative’s advocacy skills and providing opportunities for her to advocate for her causes. By partnering with the Southlake local government and other local organizations, we can show our community the power of our program and our women. We are so excited that you have chosen to participate in our organization! We are going to have a phenomenal year. 3 | THE LAKERS ORG

the job 101 Miss Southlake, Miss Westlake, Miss Southlake’s Outstanding Teen, and Miss Westlake’s Outstanding Teen (The Lakers) are the most visible external facing representatives of the Miss Southlake Scholarship Organization (MSSO) program to the public. As a member of the MSSO team, she is responsible for positively advancing the goals and objectives of MSSO as well as her own Social Impact Initiative. The Lakers will work with the MSSO team to develop goals and execute on tactics to advance her chosen Social Impact Initiative, setting metrics and developing partnerships which will show positive results at the end of her year. In addition, the Lakers will serve as advocates for the Miss America Foundation and the Miss Southlake Scholarship Organization, raising funds to create educational opportunities for young women a reality. Locally, the titleholders support Miss Texas Scholarship, Inc. and Texas Cares for Children. As such, public speaking is an essential role for our representatives. She will research and prepare speeches and presentations to deliver to audiences of all sizes. She is a representative of MSSO with sponsors, students, and the communities of Southlake and Westlake. A first step to continuing her education and career, joining the Lakers is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that carries with it service above self.

Landry Champlin, Nicole Wingard, J-Belle Kimbrell, and Meredith Charboneau represented Southlake at nearly 200 in-person, virtual, and Social Impact-related events. We are so thankful for their incredible service!

earless. When Landry first competed in the Miss Texas Organization, she stuttered onstage, offstage, and everywhere inbetween. She had a choice to make: she could either give up or push herself outside her comfort zone. Her participation in the Miss Texas Organization is a testament to the benefits of this program. Inspired by her own personal experience, Landry created her Social Impact Inititaive, Live Fearless: Defining Life Without Limits. Through her work, she founded The Live Fearless Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on the provision of academic scholarships, educational resources, and subsidies to experientialbased learning. She is also an accomplished author, having published Fiona the Fearless Fox (available in English and Spanish) and its sequal Fiona and Her Most Amazing Socks. Landry is also the host of The Fearless Files Podcast where she creates a dialogue about

confronting fears and selfdiscovery. As Miss Southlake, Landry has broadened The Live Fearless Foundation's reach. Notably, she became the youngest Board Member of Broadway Dallas' Give a Kid a Seat Initiative. This initiative ensures that students at Title 1 Schools in Dallas have access to the performing arts and educational workshops hosted by Broadway Dallas. In addition, Landry codeveloped Fiona the Fearless Fox: The Musical as a student at Oklahoma City University. The musical's book and score will serve as an educational resource for local workshops centered on the promotion of the performing arts. Outside of these initiatives, Landry has engaged the City of Southlake as an ambassador of the Miss Southlake Scholarship Organization. She has been

welcomed by various local business, emceed a variety of community events, read Fiona The Fearless Fox at the Southlake Public Library, created promotional materials, and more. Outside of this, Landry has been a proponent of the Miss Texas Organization, launching a viral Miss Texas Prep Series on TikTok. A decorated representative, Landry placed First-Runner Up at Miss Texas, winning Overall Interview, Overall Talent, and Overall On-Stage Question & Social Impact Pitch.

living fearlessly plays on our path to success.

Partnering with BBBS Lubbock has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve done in college.

ccording to recent data, one in three young people in the United States grow up without a mentor. At the same time, data suggests that people feel more mentorship opportunities are needed in the United States. Nicole Wingard created Mentor UP: Unlocking Tomorrow’s Potential Today to inspire and mentor people of all ages. Mentor UP combats these statistics by educating community members about the importance of mentorship and equipping others with the tools necessary to identify mentorship qualities in others and to serve as a mentor for someone else. In January 2021, Nicole Wingard was matched with a Little Sister, Haylee, through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock.

There, she mentors her future by investing quality time in their relationship and supporting her through weekly activities. In addition to working as a Big Sister, one of Nicole’s initiatives is an event created in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock—“The Power of Positivity.” This program focuses on three foundational principles: (1) Building confidence through self-affirmations, (2) Serving others through communityoriented service projects, and (3) Developing a healthy lifestyle by discussing the benefits of exercise and games. To do so, Nicole speaks with the students about positive self-talk, hosts a service project for participants, and organizes several interactive games. In collaboration with

Big Brothers Big Sisters, Nicole takes The Power of Positivity to school districts across West Texas and has mentored over one hundred participants to date. It is necessary to close the mentorship gap in the United States by recognizing how people can fill that role in others’ lives.As Miss Westlake, Nicole has committed her year of service to making this a areality. Together, it is possible to make that difference in another’s life.

eredith Charboneau, Miss Westlake’s Outstanding Teen, is an incredible advocate for her Social Impact Initiative Mind’s Key: Unlocking Minds Through Music. With her passion for music and a heart for service, Meredith shares the way teenagers can identify their passion and serve others. For Meredith, her unique form of service is musical performance in elderly care facilities and nursing homes. In 2020, Meredith along with some of her classmates formed The Quintessentials String Quartet. Together, the Quartet has played at a variety of facilities in the Houston-area, bringing joy to the residents. As Miss Westlake’s Outstanding Teen, Meredith has broadened her work with the Quintessentials. By using her social media platform, Meredith has given other young artists in the State of Texas a platform to share their talents. On Music Mondays, Meredith shares videos of other performers. In addition, during Women’s History Month, Meredith spotlighted various women in Music. Finally, Meredith has raised awareness for the positive effects of music on brain development, emphasizing the importance of music education. Through her experience with The Quintessentials and her involvement in the Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen Organization, Meredith has seen the positive impact of giving back to other communities. Meredith encourages all people to identify their form of service and to give back to their communities. THE LAKERS ORG | 14

ovember 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roads. Since then, nearly 70,000 people have died on Texas roads. Unfortunately, distracted driving has impacted Miss Southlake’s Outstanding Teen J-Belle Kimbrell and her family twice. On April 25, 2004, J-Belle lost her brother, and on February 9, 2008, J-Belle lost her father—both in distracted driving accidents. These tragic losses inspired J-Belle’s Social Impact Initiative, Street Smarts: Steer Clear of Distractions. With this initiative, J-Belle raises awareness of the types of distracted driving, provides awareness on how to be an engaged rather than

distracted driver, and equips passengers with resources necessary to identify distractions in drivers. During her year of service, J-Belle raised awareness about distracted driving, spotlighting her own personal experience as well as key information about driver’s safety. J-Belle also served as an emcee and performer at community events. On June 25, J-Belle’s life changed when she earned the job of Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen (MTOT). As MTOT, J-Belle will represent the State of Texas at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen (MAOTeen) Competition in August 2022. And, in doing so, she will act as the hostess for her sister titleholders, welcoming

MAOTeen to its new host city, Dallas. As Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen, J-Belle will continue to raise awareness for this important issue. In doing so, she will share her message with citizens across the Lone Star State: Everybody’s life matters on the roads. So, please always remember to drive friendly, the Texas way. Beyond MAOTeen, J-Belle will make countless appearances throughout Texas. In this capacity, she will serve as an ambassador for the Miss Texas Organization and Texas Cares for Children. A New Season Begins, and The Legacy Continues. The 2023 Miss Southlake, Miss Westlake, Miss Southlake’s Outstanding Teen, and Miss Westlake’s Outstanding Teen Competition will take place at the Coppell Arts Center in Coppell, TX, on September 24, 2022. A day-of schedule will be circulated closer to the competition. We are incredibly excited to welcome you to this state-of-the-art facility. and we are proud to advance the mission of the Miss America Organization and Miss Texas Organization following the 100th and 85th Anniversaries, respectively. More than anything, this Competition Guide is a resource. The rest of the Guide will provide a high-level overview of the Phases of Competition, the Score Distribution, Applicable State & Local Paperwork, and Ad Page information. It will also flag relevant deadlines so that you are ready to compete on September 24. The Miss phases of competition include: On-Stage Interview & Social Impact Pitch; Red Carpet; and Talent. The Teen phases of competition include: Evening Wear & On-Stage Question; Lifestyle & Fitness; and Talent. WHY SHOULD I BE A CANDIDATE

Each year, thousands of young women participate at the local, state, and national levels, culminating in the selection of 51 national finalists who compete for Miss America or Miss America’s Outstanding Teen. One of them could be you—all you have to do is take the leap! People always ask: Why Should I Be a Candidate? Well, Because You Can: • Gain valuable experience and Develop life skills (e.g. interview skills, public speaking, interpersonal communication, social interaction, etc.); • Earn quality scholarship funds for college and graduate school, regardless of whether a title is won; • Find new interests and Discover new opportunities; • Make lifelong friendships and relationships; • Learn to set goals, follow them through, and exceed your expectations; • Develop a sense of responsibility for helping others and Engage in community service; • Foster a positive, self-motivated mindset to achieve your goals; • Receive recognition for your efforts in bettering yourself and your community; • And More! To compete for the national title, you must first register for membership in the Miss America Program. Membership gives you access to exclusive member benefits as well as the ability to compete in local competitions. If you win a local competition, you can then compete in your state competition for a chance to compete at the national Miss America or MAOTeen Competition —a process requiring hard work, talent and personal commitment. Along the way, you will learn valuable life and career skills and earn thousands of dollars in scholarships to help pay for your education. In doing so, you will make memories that last a lifetime! PRIVATE INTERVIEW The ten-minute interview provides insight into the candidate’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities outlined in the Miss Southlake and Miss Westlake job description and contract. You will submit a one-page Resume and Social Impact Essay that will guide the interview. It gives the judges the opportunity to learn about your unique qualities, commitment to advance your social impact, accomplishments beyond your resume, and your own personal beliefs. 19 | THE LAKERS ORG

TALENT The 90-second talent competition allows insight into the candidate’s preparatory and performance skills. The talent presentation, overall performance, and technical ability and skill are taken into consideration. Talents vary from dance to science experiments!

RED CARPET Each candidate will compete in Red Carpet, a stand alone category, in the evening wear of her selection. Candidates should select their wardrobe based on what they would wear to a red carpet event. Note: Neither the attire itself nor the estimated cost of the wardrobe will be considered in scoring.

SOCIAL IMPACT PITCH & ON-STAGE INTERVIEW This phase of competitions brings the private interview to the stage. It allows the audience to get to know the candidate as they showcase their intelligence, personality, charisma, and aptitude for the job of Miss Southlake. Candidates will have 30 seconds to deliver a Social Impact Pitch, highlighting its topical importance, her work, and her plans for the initiative as Miss Southlake or Miss Westlake.

The estimated cost of wardrobe is not considered.

LIFESTYLE & FITNESS This phase of competition is designed to see how well the candidate maintains a lifestyle of good physical health and the candidate’s ability to exude confidence and self-assurance. Candidates will wear aerobic or active-wear clothing, NOT a swimsuit.

If you are an interested Miss or Teen Candidate, you must first complete the one-time 2023 Competition Registration ($35.00) on the Miss America Website. For your convenience, you can scan the QR Code on the right to be taken directly to the registration.

After completing the registration, both the candidate and Miss Texas Executive Director Jan Mitchell will receive a confirmation. 3

Upon registration, you will receive an email with further instructions about how to register for a local competition. You MUST complete this registration to compete at Miss Southlake & Miss Westlake. 4

The Local Competition Registration will prompt an interested candidate to pay a $75.00 registration fee. Only Miss Candidates pay this fee. Teen Candidates instead should use the discount code TEENLOCAL. For the avoidance of doubt, please send DaNae Couch Lowe proof of registration at danae@misssouthlake.org. 5

Once DaNae receives proof of registration, she will send the interested candidate the MAO State & Local Candidate Agreement. This Agreement is part of the required paperwork to compete.

The Princess Program The Princess Program is designed to promote early involvement in the Miss America program. It is a mentoring program and gives young girls a chance to learn more about what being a local or state titleholder involves. Young ladies must be 6–12 years and cannot be older than 12 years by the date of the Miss Texas Competition in June 2023.

Why Should I Join the Miss Southlake Princess Program? The Miss Southlake Scholarship Organization is committed to investing in the Princess Program. Our goal goes beyond simply creating a memorable experience for the girls involved. We hope to create lasting mentorship relationships that exist beyond the stage. To that end, opportunities for Princesses are year-round rather than confined to the Competition date. On April 3, 2020, the Miss Southlake Scholarship Organization hosted a Virtual Princess Party. Twenty-five members of the Miss Texas and Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen Classes of 2020/2021 contributed to the talent showcase. We welcomed Payton May, the reigning Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, as well as our fabulous state queens Miss Texas Chandler Foreman and Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen Allie Graves. The event welcomed 151 unique, participant computers, many of which were shared by multiple viewers. We also coordinate holiday events. This includes an in-person Christmas party, virtual Easter Egg Decorating hosted via Zoom, a virtual Christmas Celebration Concert, and a Virtual Tea Time. Southlake Princess Experience The standard fee to be a Southlake Princess is $75. Additional participation packages are available and outlined below. At the Miss Southlake Competition, Princesses will participate in planned programming with Miss Southlake Landry Champlin, Miss Westlake Nicole Wingard, and Miss Westlake’s Outstanding Teen Meredith Charboneau. They will also get to meet the outgoing Miss Southlake’s Outstanding Teen and now Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen J-Belle Kimbrell. They will have the opportunity to be featured at the Miss Southlake Competition, and we are thrilled about getting to welcome them. Once you have chosen your Princess, please notify us and provide us with their contact information. We will send them registration paperwork that they will need to send with their payment, and we will coordinate the competition details with them. If you need help finding a princess, please let us know. It really does make the experience fun, though, if you choose a princess with which you have a personal relationship. Southlake Princess Registration Paperwork and Payments are due by no later than Friday, September 16, 2022. For additional information, contact danae@misssouthlake.org.

All Southlake Princesses will have the option of being your Lone Star Princess for the year and participating at the Miss Texas and Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen Competitions in June 2022. If a princess chooses to become a Lone Star Princess, she should visit the Miss Texas website for additional information.
