OUR FOUNDER, SARAH PORTER, was ahead of her time

when she designed her curriculum to include Latin, French and German, spelling, reading, arithmetic, trigonometry, history and geography, as well as chemistry, physiology, botany, geology and astronomy.

The depth and breadth of her curriculum was unheard of in the 19th century, as was her expectation for each student to design her course selection to meet her individual needs and talents. We have a long tradition of educating girls unconventionally and no plans to deviate from our founder’s vision.

Faculty advisors offer academic and personal support to new students, or New Girls, in their transition to Porter’s. The advisor relationship continues even after a student becomes an Old Girl, and students in the same advisory group develop strong bonds that carry over from year to year.

Every New Girl is assigned an Old Girl, a senior who is both her friend and mentor. Together, you will delve deeper into the spirit of connection and community shared between students by taking part in Traditions, many of which have existed since the school’s founding. As a result, you will develop lifelong relationships with your teachers and classmates.

OUR STUDENTS ARE ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY. As such, they deserve extraordinary teachers, experiences, and opportunities to showcase all that is possible with great interest and great effort.

In addition to a premier liberal arts education, you will benefit from a curriculum that ensures you will also learn to innovate and create, conduct original research, delve into entrepreneurship, complete projects within science, technology, engineering, arts, and math fields, and develop an understanding of how to address complex social issues.

It’s an ambitious undertaking that is uniquely Porter’s, and it all happens through the thoughtful design of our daily schedule. Eighty minute classes allow for creative and engaging lessons, with deeper dives into subjects and more thorough topical understanding. Longer classes mean fewer are scheduled each day, allowing for a less hectic pace, as well as fewer assignments due each day, reducing the overall amount of homework while simultaneously raising its quality.

With the understanding that a calmer pace, less homework, and increased sleep lead to reduced stress—a proven predictor of increased academic performance– we’ve placed a premium on a holistic approach to the typical class day.

IN ADDITION TO OUR STANDARD COURSES and in concert with our 16 Advanced Placement courses, Porter’s has developed Advanced Interdisciplinary Seminars for juniors and seniors.

These seminar courses cultivate exceptional thinkers and provide rich experiences by combining the intellectual rigor of Advanced Placement courses with interdisciplinary, experiential, and project-based learning. Students are challenged to think deeply, ask thoughtful questions, analyze and evaluate information for content and merit, and make connections across topics and subjects. Seminars regularly surpass the expectations of an Advanced Placement course curriculum, allowing for a more intense understanding of subjects in a broader sense.

Personalized learning options are also available via our longstanding partnership with One Schoolhouse, an online school offering all-girls and co-ed courses in over fifty AP and non-AP courses in world languages, computer science, global and cultural competency, and science, technology, engineering, and math. While at Porter’s, you may take one course at One Schoolhouse each term, including the summer, and these courses will be factored into your transcript and your grade point average.

REAL LIFE AND THE REAL WORLD are front and center during InterMission, our three-week, mission-focused winter term.

InterMission courses are cross-disciplinary and co-taught, with an emphasis on hands-on learning through practice. You will explore new concepts, skills, and self-awareness through your in-depth study of a specific topic within a grade level curriculum. You will learn about potential careers and courses of study through ample field trips, service opportunities, and immersive workplace assignments with, and presentations by, alumnae, or Ancients, as we fondly refer to them, whom we consider the best role models for our students.

As part of the eleventh grade InterMission curriculum, Porter’s fully funds, at no charge, an international travel experience for all juniors These intensive international immersion programs are not a mere peek into another culture via a paid tour; rather, they are authentic, real-life programs through which you will begin to understand life in another country by engaging deeply in the history, cultural traditions, and current events in an international location while attending classes and activities at one of our 18 partner schools.

Furthermore, our Institute for Global Education combines key elements to create a global community in Farmington.

Our junior year InterMission experience is one vital component, and our teachers’ experience is another. We require that all of our teachers have an international experience, either prior to beginning work at Porter’s, or through funded professional development during their tenure here.

We have extensive relationships with schools around the world, and this global network connects students and faculty to their international peers, allowing for an exchange of ideas within diverse geographical contexts. Lastly, we have a visiting school program in which we welcome students and faculty from our partner schools to live and study at Porter’s for their own immersive experiences.

Bolstered by a deep understanding of global matters, you will engage confidently with the larger world.

SIMILARLY, OUR INSTITUTE FOR TECHNOLOGY, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship prepares our students to lead within a technology-driven global society and economy.

Our required introductory course focuses on hands-on experiences and skill development in science, technology, engineering, art and math, with an emphasis on emerging trends, virtual guest lectures from industry professionals, and research and design activities. Further elective courses continue this work with skill building and experiential tracks.

Following the academic day, our afternoon program offers students the chance to gain new skills in a variety of topics including robotics, artificial intelligence, data science, and more.

Access and opportunity aren’t the only tools you need. Our brand-new innovation lab in our Olin Arts and Science Center is home to a suite of rapid-prototyping equipment such as 3-D printers, a CNC machine and a full spectrum laser cutter, MakeyMakey boards, Brick Pi, Arduino UNO and YUN Microcontrollers.

Essential life lessons can be found in the pursuit of your passions, and Porter’s students are given the opportunity to follow their hearts.

Our innovative schedule allows for sixty minutes of community time each day, during which students may pursue individual passions, conduct or attend meetings for clubs and organizations, socialize, receive extra help or begin homework.

The team, group, and activity options in the Porter’s Co-Curricular Program are also integral to our mission. By participating in the Co-Curricular Program strands in athletics, arts, technology, or student clubs and initiatives, students develop an understanding of leadership, group dynamics, overcoming adversity, and empathy.

HOW WILL YOUR competitive athletic experience change, when all of the focus and resources are on what is best for you?

Imagine only the best athletic facilities possible for female athletes: three state-ofthe-art turf fields, including a full NCAA regulation victory turf field that is home to our varsity field hockey team and a full NCAA regulation synthetic turf field that is home to our varsity soccer team; a pool and squash center housing an eight-lane, 25-yard swimming pool and eight international squash courts; cardio, free weight and erg rooms; two gymnasiums, seven deco-turf tennis courts, an indoor track, a climbing wall and a crew boathouse for our fall and spring crew program.

Consider the idea of never having to compete for equal time. From fields to fitness equipment, from athletic training to game scheduling, all of our attention is on girls’ sports.

THROUGH STEADY INTERACTION with the arts, both in the classroom and in the community, you will be taught to be expressive, articulate and discerning. With the guidance of teachers who are all gifted artists, you will advance your skills in your preferred discipline within exceptional facilities, all designed with innovative and essential elements for quality work.

The Porter Plan is one of the distinguishing features of our school. It requires that our house directors’ primary responsibilities on campus are within our dormitories and focused on you.

The Porter Plan ensures that house directors are able to concentrate on building strong, interactive bonds with each student in their dorm without the additional expectations of teaching or coaching—the standard at other boarding schools.

We know that residential faculty who teach all day and coach all afternoon can’t offer the same support as our house directors can and do provide.

Students transition to boarding school best when there are adults in their lives who are present and available, just as families are.

ALL OF OUR CONVERSATIONS are about what matters most for students.

Students in our research methods course study participatory action research, tackling an intensive, campus-based issue as the topic for their yearlong research project within the Porter’s community. Then, they survey, code and analyze their results after a thorough review of the current literature in the field of the research project, in order to effect change. Our research scholars have given presentations at the Ethnography in Education Research Forum, Northeastern Educational Research Association, National Coalition of Girls’ Schools Global Forum, and served as keynote speakers at The Association of Boarding Schools Leadership Forum.

Connected to this work is Porter’s Community Life Team, which is made up of students and administrators who examine student satisfaction through interviews and focus groups to suggest and implement annual action plans.

NOW IS A TIME RIPE with both opportunities and challenges for women.

We are able to address and answer the ways in which our students begin to question what their lives will look like after high school. We have the difficult discussions, whether how social expectations are different for girls than boys, how gender plays in to college admission, how to navigate the income wage gap, or how to find the right work/life/parenting balance.

We invite female leaders in their fields to present to students thanks to the funds provided by our generous endowment. Ancients are welcomed back to campus as InterMission, Founder’s Day, and Commencement keynote speakers to share their topical and relevant experiences, both personal and professional.

All students are invited to participate in our Journey Talks by giving a presentation during Morning Meeting about a matter of personal importance or individual growth related to each school year’s theme.
