THE SCHOOL SITE The Academy is si tuated in Bellevue Place, in t he eastern suburbs of t he city, on the sumrni t o f a bea u t iful elevation, descending gentl y in all directions. It is nea r enough to have th e advantages of the city, and at the same t ime fa r enough out to enjoy the freedom. pure ai r, and pure water of the country. From this point the surrounding country presents picturesque views of rolling hills, green fields, luxuriant meadows, embellished here and there with woodland, lake and stream. It is trul y an ideal school home.

In the spring of 1900, after a la pse of four yea rs, t he Bus iness tv[en·s Associa tion o f tvlex ico, desiri ng to ta ke up t he question o f re-es t ablishing the cadem y, req uested a con ference with Colonel A. K . Y a ncey, who fo r t welve yea rs had been t he successfu l p resident o f H a rd in Co llege, a nd C olonel vV. D. Fon ,·ille, fo r seventeen yea rs the supe rint enden t a nd proprieto r o f Alabama tv[ilita ry Institute. The confe rence resul ted in a n agreement to rebuild th e .Academ on p la ns submitted b y Colonels Ya ncey and Fon v ille, involvi ng on imm ed iate expenditure o f fift y thousand dolla rs , to whi ch ad d it ions were to be made from time to time as the exigencies o f t he school should dema nd.

The citi zens of i\/lexico dona ted ten thousand dolla rs to the new ente rprise, thus m a n ifest ing a laudable publi c spir it as well as a n inspiring confid ence in the abili t y of the men in cha rge. President Ya ncey a n I Superintendent Fon v ille furn ished the requ is ite money to complet e fi ft y thousa nd doll a rs, purchased a n elega nt b lue-grass cam pus in the easte rn suburbs of the city, a nd began the construction o f the new .Academ y about t he fi rs t of June, 1900.

T he school began its n ew ca reer with the good will a nd co rd ia l endo rsem ent of the most d istinguished educa tors, d iv ines a nd st a t esm en o f the midd le west.

On th e t wenti eth o f September, 1900, th e doo rs o f the new Academy were th rown open for the reception o f s tudents. The a ttendance from the s ta rt exceeded the m ost sa nguine expectations o f the school ·s best fri ends. In this first session o f the n ew Academy, cadets, representing the best people, ca me from no t less tha n eleven states.

In 1901 the school sustained a very severe loss in the death of Colonel Yancey.

Later, Colonel Fonville purchased the interest formerl y owned by Colonel Yancey and became the proprietor of the Academy. To meet the demands of an increasing attendance, additional barracks and class rooms were constructed, and the chemical and physical laboratories were enla rged and provided with better equipmen t.

In 1911, Colonel Fonville retired from the active presidency of the Academy and was succeeded by Colonel W. R . Kohr, who remained in charge fo r three yea rs.

In 1914, Colonel E. Y. Burton was unanimously elected p resident of the Academy, and the school at once entered upon a new area of prosperity a nd usefulness. The session just closed has, in every respect, been one of the most satisfactory in the history of the institution.

Under the present management, the enrollment has increased 300 per cent.

Yearl y, the efficiency, the standing, and the equipment have becom e greater.

Buildings and Equipment r'-iiiiliiiii._.HE buildings are new a nd modern in design and equipment. As the photographs show, they were built fo r military school purposes. The main b uild ing is used for administration pu rposes, chapel, parlors, dining room and the President's a nd the Commandant's quarters. A, B, C and D Barracks are dormitories for the boys, and contain, as wel l, the section rooms. The buildings a re constructed of brick, covered with metal roof, heated b y steam, and lighted by electricity.

NEW BUILDING BARRACKS "A"

Owing to the remarkable growth o f the school, a new barracks was absolutely essential to take care of the increased enrollment. Accordingly, during the summer of 1917, a strictly fireproof brick building was constructed. This build ing is three stories in height and modern in every respect. obt a inable. Like the other barracks, this building is heated by steam and lighted by electricity. All rooms are outside rooms and therefore assured of plenty of sunlight. On the first Aoor, in add ition to t he class rooms, there are the new chemical a nd phys ica l laborato ri es. In this building there are also accommodations for two o f the ma rried members o f the faculty.

BARRACKS

At the same time the n ew barracks, called Barracks "A", was "B" and "C" under construction, extensive repa irs and improvements were made on the other buildings. New lavatories and shower baths were install ed in Barracks ··s .. a nd --c··. These buildings are mad e of brick and covered with m etal roofs, with the added protection of brick fire-proof partitions between the cadet rooms.

NEW BUILDING BARRACKS "D"

The increasing popularity o f our school necessitated more barracks for the accommodation of boys applying for enrollment.

Accord ingl y, during the summer of 1919, a new barracks was erected. The buildi ng is of tile· stucco construction, and insures the comfort and well-being of its occupants. It is provided with shower b a ths, is heated by steam and lighted by electricity. All rooms are outside rooms, insuring ample sunlight a nd ventila tion .

THE GYMNASIUM Realizing the need of a place for healthful recreation d uring the winter months, a gymnasium was erected in the fa ll of 19 14. The first Aoor conta ins the new! , equipped manua l training room . The m ai n floor, in addition to being used for gymnasium purpo es a nd a basketba ll court, is converted into a dri ll hall during inclement o r cold weather. t con veni ent times this place also becomes the home of enjo able dances, to wh ich o ung ladies from Hardin Col lege and from the best famili es in l\!lexico are in v ited . U1 stai rs are two large dressing rooms with showers and plenty of steel lockers.

CHAPEL

THE CHAPEL The Chapel is located on the second Aoo r of the Administration Building. It is in this room that the facuity and cadets meet each day. Devotional exercises are conducted in the dining room each morning before breakfast, and the Chapel meetings are devoted to the singi ng of patriotic and school songs, talks by the school authorities and lectures b y v isitors.

SWIMMING POOL Connected with the Gymnasiu m there is a swimming pool, which occupies a space of twenty-two by sixty-five feet.

A separate heating plant has been installed for the pu rpose of heating the water and keeping the room at the proper temperature. There are also shower baths and ample dressing-room facilities.

This room is run in connection with the libra r'.} and is always under the direct supervision of a faculty officer. This room is amply provided with the best of magazines and newspapers. CADET QUARTERS We realize that the rooms are the li ving q uarters of the cadets for nine months of the year and we have tried to make them bright and cheerful. The rooms in a ll of the barracks are exposed to direct sunlight, have at least one large window and are well ventilated. While ordinarily two cadets occupy one room, each has his own bed. The rooms are a ll furnished with beds, springs, mattresses, tables, chairs, dressers and wardrobes or closets.

It is the policy of the Acadern to give the cadets as many opportuni ties fo r amusement as possible during their spare t ime. If cadets can nnd good enterta inment on the campus they wi ll not seek forbidden amusement elsewhere. A recreation room , containing two pool tables, one combination pool and bil liard table and two bowling a lleys, is open each afternoon during the recreation period, from three thirty until five thirt y.

LABORATORIES The labo ratories are loca ted on the first Aoor of Barracks "A··, and are fu rnished with convenient desks, water supply, and all necessa ry appa ratus. Our facilities a re adequate for t he thorough teaching according to modern methods, of a ll the courses outlined in the ca talogue. Our labo ratories a re inspected and approved b y the University of Missouri.

QUARTERMASTER'S OFFICE >lajor J. C. Strock

QUARTERMASTER'S A room on the first floor of Ba rracks ··c·· is used by the Quartermaster as an office and storeroom. The QuarterOFFICE master is a Faculty Officer and the cadets may secure from him books, stationery, military equipment and such other articles as are carried in any good school store. This department is maintained as a convenience for the cadets, and unless otherwise o rdered, bills for goods purchased b y them will be sent to parents monthly.

Only necessa ry equipment and supplies will be charged on account without parents' perm1ss1on. Cadets desiring to purchase other than necessary articles carried by the Quartermaster, such as sweaters, Memory Books, etc., will be required to pay cash or present a written order from their parents authorizing them to charge same to their account.

HOSPITAL The Academy is provided with a well equipped hospital large enough to accommodate forty boys at one time. The bui lding is modern and the rooms are all outside rooms, bright, cheerful and well ventilated, with abundant sunlight. In fact, our hospital accommodations are in keeping with our equipment in general , and are better than can be found in other simi lar schools in

the Middle West.

In this manner we are enabled to pay close attention to the cadets. We a hvays notify the parents promptly when a boy is at all seriously sick. This is done to prevent needless anxiety, and parents may a lways rest assu red that their boys are receiving proper care and attention. In case of serious sickness, the cadets so affected may be taken to our City Hospital. Mexico is well equipped with the best of general practitioners and surgeons, and has just completed a new hospital costing about $150,000.00.

Each morning, immediately before breakfast, the sick roll is made up. At this time note is made of the physical condition of the boys. Should a cadet at any time appear to need the attention of the physician or nurse, he immediately reports to the hospital, where his needs are attended. Should a cadet be found sick, he is put to bed in the hospital. This secures for him proper attention and excuses him from all duty.

HOLSTEIN HERD

COWS Our herd of Holstein cows is under the supervision of the United States Department of Agriculture, and is kept free from tuberculosis.

This herd supplies your boys the best of cream and milk. We also serve the best of creamery butter instead of oleomargarine. lf no milk were served, and oleomargarine used instead of butter, there would be a saving to us of over $6,000.00 per year.

MEALS The n1eals are first-class in every respect, and only high grade goods are used. It is recognized that good work cannot be expected of boys unless an abundant and appetizing diet is supplied to them. The food is varied and no effort spared to make it palatable and attractive to the boys. We believe that we serve better meals than many schools, and know that we give each cc1det all that he should eat.

HOME LIFE \Ve lay particular stress upon the home life of the cadet, for we believe that nothing is too good for your boy, and wish to have such a school that the most earnest mother may feel perfectly content in entrusting her boy to our care. Cadets are constantly under the refined and elevating influences of a faculty of college-bred men. The wife of the President and the wives of the married instructors make the social life of the Academy more like that of a home, 23

Teachers and ladies of the Academy take their mea ls with the cadets in the d in ing rooms. Big Brother way. But few a re wi lling to put their faith into p ractice. We not onl y believe in this plan as a theo ry , but we k now from expe ri ence that, when p racticed, it produces wonclerful resul ts. loclern psycho logy t eaches us tha t a kind word, from one in a uthority , accomp lishes mo re tha n a severe reprima nd or a report. No longe r is it best- if it ever was- to trea t boys as s impl y nuisances, who a re always bad , and who always require someone t o hold a whi p-hand over them . A few wo rds of adv ice gi ven in the right spirit touch the modern boy where he needs to be touched. Contra ry to ancient belief, th e average boy is not by na ture bad, but a t hea rt good. It is a sad fact that it took the ed uca tiona l world a long time to d iscover th is.

DrNING ROOM

You know of fathers who are chums with their sons, who make their boys· pleasure their pleasure, who live near to their children, and you like those fathers.

Perhaps you are such a father. We hope so. It is in just such a sense that the Big Brother Plan works. Our teachers are literal ly churns and friends of the cadets, as well as instructors. Cadets alwa ys feel at liberty to approach them on any reasonable subject and are assured an audience. Every boy has his li ttle troubles and is lost if he does not have some syn1pathetic person with whom he can discuss them. At home this person is mother, father, or an older brother; at school it must be the teacher, if anyone. This intimate contact a llows the instructor to study the boy at close range, but perhaps its greatest advantage is the chance given the boy to study the instructor.

Some ma y argue that this intimacy precludes discipli ne. That view is entirel y wrong. Abraham Lincoln was a Big Brother to the whole country, and yet he was always in command. K indness does not mean looseness any more than strictness means harshness. The best teachers are those who get close to the students, those

who sympathize with them and can see things as students see them. Teaching is m ore than the mere dissemination of knowledge. O li ver \,Yendell Holmes was a great teacher, not because of his wonderful erudition, but because he got close to his classes. He was a Big Brothe r to his students.

Our barracks a re d iv ided into sections with a teacher in charge of each section, whose duty, as well as whose pleasure, it is to keep in close touch with the cadets in his care. H e is not a .. Sherlock H o lrnes .. to watch every movement, but he is an ever- ready friend who s ta nds p repa red to help when help is wanted o r is necessary.

In o ther words, he is a Big Brother to a number o f younger brothers, and leads by precept and exam ple. P a rt of our success in keeping boys contented and happy we a ttribute to this method . There is a n excellent spirit among the cadets and practicall y no fricti on between them a nd their t eachers. \Ve know that we saved some boys d uring the past year from leaping into trouble by a few k ind, brotherly words spoken at the right time. Think what this means to the boy as well as to you , the parent. Incalculable is the value of the Big Brother Plan, the applied k indness method.

The longer a cadet rem ai ns with us the more he rea lizes that what the school does is fo r his good. In other words, he becom es educated to the Big Brother method, one of the big things at Ivf. M. A.

M. M. A. Merit System The M. M. A. idea of Discipline is practicall y a reversa l of t hat en tertained a nd applied by the average school for boys- particul a rl y of t he milita ry type. Yet not onl) is it based on unquestionably sound psychology ; but, as employed in M issouri Military Academy at least, it is absolutely justified by its results.

Our Merit System rewards instead of punishing- it leads instead of driving- it appeals to the highest motives instead of to t he lowest- it is constructive rather than destructive-it builds manl y character instead of tempti ng to evasion, concea lment, and resentment-it foste rs loyalty and a ffection fo r the school a nd its ideals, and sends forth graduates who are proud to a ttribute to its inAuence a large measure of thei r physical , intell ectual and mora l stu rdiness.

BUGLE CORPS

T his N!erit S ystem is built upon two considerations : first, such a division of the student"s time as to give him a mple leisure for proper amusements; and second, an impera tive demand that he sha ll faithfull y perform the work assigned.

The whole emphasis is placed upon the work. This is carefully divided, so that any average student can handle it if he applies himself ; and it is insisted that he must do this. If he requires the help of an instructor, he gets it. If he loses his time for a rnusement, it is never because this is taken from him as a punishment- it is m erely that he may bring his work up to the mark. And he is given every encouragernent, a nd every assistance, in doing this.

Duty done a lways means reward. This may take the form of some special pri v ilege, like a little trip down town ; or it may be simply freedom to join athletic practice on the student's own "team... In any event, it is something that he likes and from which he is debarred onl y because his time is required to bring his work up to standard.

Pacing a beat, gun-carrying, pack-carry ing, and al l the round of corporal punishments so generally resorted to in other schools have no place here; our Merit System renders them unneccessary. It gets better results, and gets them with less friction.

The Merit System is reinforced by appeal to group psychology. Stated competition between the boys occupying the different barracks is perpetually invoked.

In this, the standing of the individual student is reflected in that of his barracks.

The laggard thus finds himself quickly out of favor with his fellows. It becomes less urgent that the instructor shall attempt to spur him on, because his fellow students take this upon themselves. And he finds it harder to resist the pressure when it is thus applied. Here, again, better results with less friction result.

The President's Talk to Parents HE modern military school recogn izes and utilizes, to a degree approached by no other school, the psychology of boyhood. l t 1 appea ls, insistently and irresistibly, to a ll the better impulses of the boy. It q uickens the constructive forces of his nature, and gives them direction and a lignment. At a time when the swift waxi ng of menta l and physical powe rs shatters the si mpl e idea lism of his childhood, it provides the wise pilotage which insures against the shipwreck of character.

The modern mi li tary school conserves the t ime and energies of the boy. It puts efficiency into h is work, and the habits of efficiency into his life. It gives him a grip upon his own faculties such as is given by no other school.

The modern military school and the ordina ry school, whether publi c or pa rochia l, approach the problems of boy training from d iametricall y opposite angles. The

military school recognizes the boy, and treats him as an embryo man- not as a child of larger growth and added years. The military school never for a moment ignores the tremendous truth that the whole viewpoint of the boy is effected by incipient manhood; that he is beginning to ··put away chi ld ish things ...

The modern military school develops manliness, by enforcing upon the expanding consciousness of the boy the fact that reward is the legitimate result of merit. Promotion to student honors is made contingent upon the individual record of the student in his work. No "pull" is recognized but that of the student's own achievement.

Here, as everywhere else throughout the whole range of his school life, d uty is sweetened with self-interest.

It is only the last four or five years that the public has fairly begun to awaken from the very false impression that the military school was for unrul y boys. Doubtless there was, at one time, some foundation for such an impression . Military service was once very largely recruited from the lower classes. Military discipline was, then, necessarily drastic. It is not hard to understand that, under such conditions, the conduct of the military school of the day might have taken on a reflected harshness nor is it improbable that a Colonel Squeers n1ay have been found, now and then, willing to capitalize the evil and immature ideals of his time at the expense of the good name of the military school.

Later on, following the close of the Ci vi l War, the State schools and private schools, led by tha t enlivened interest in military matters, which was the natural heritage o f the great struggle, made military drill the leading feature of their work.

In many cases, un fortuna tely, the scholastic work was neglected . This was inevitably fol lowed by an imp ress ion on the part of the public that the military school was essentia ll y a tra ining school for unrul y boys, and not to be taken too seriously otherwise.

But those days have passed, and with them have gone the undesirable ideals a nd institutions to whi ch they gave rise. In their stead a re schools which mark the world's utmost advance in ph s ica l, mental a nd mo ra l training. This swift change in mil itary schools has a risen , as has been noted, out of the saner conception of the psychology of boyhood whi ch characterizes the military schools of the present day.

It has resulted in a rea rrangement o f pedagogical methods upon trul , scientific lines.

It has caused the discard ing o f obsolete theories, and the substitution of a regime that con forms to the facts in boy nature.

It is true that this movement has been practically uni versal throughout the school syst ems of America ; but it is not too much to declare that it has been led, a nd today finds its highest exponent, in the mode rn mili ta ry school.

The regulation of school athletics has been found a wonderful means to securing d iscipline in the military school. No longer is the student permitted to use the g rmnasium at will. No haphazard play is permitted in field o r on track. Everything of this sort is done according to order, under the personal supervision of an instruc to r. This instructor is a lso, and a lways, a leader in the sport. He makes it

his business to see that no student fa ils to understand t he rul es, o r to become thoroughl y enthused over the game. Under his wise direction every fo rm and phase of a thletics takes on magical virility and attractiveness.

Under these conditions the shorten ing, o r loss, of his hour at footba ll , o r swim ming or other physical activity, becomes a really serious ma tter to the student ; and when he learns that it wil l su rely be j eopardized by remissness in study, o r in personal cleanliness, or in the tidying up of his room, he wil l a lmost inva riably redouble his attention to the " work'" side of h is school life.

This automatically acting, negative sort of punishment fo r dereliction of d u ty fairly represents the attitude of the modern mi lita ry school u pon the matter of student discipline. It is assumed, in the beginning, that t he boy is right and wishes to do right. Participation in school athletics is made a sort of rewa rd fo r doing the right thing- for norma l li ving. Any departure from norma li ty is made to bring its own retribution- light, but inevitable. It has been found that the certainty of th e penalty, far more than any severity that rnay be imposed, reta rds any tendency toward wrong-doing. It cannot be denied, moreover, that under this system the moral sensibilities of the boy are fa r less apt to fal l a nd the fiber of his self-respect to relax. The element of personal humilia tion is sedulously elirninated from a ll penalties imposed during the bo ,·s att endance at a modern mili ta ry school.

The unmistakable trend in the military school of today is to d isca rd punishment as a means of securing discipline ; m any of the best schools have abandoned it altogether, finding in a well balanced system of rewards a more effecti ve restraint upon wrong-doing as well as a stronger incenti ve to constructi ve work.

The m ilitary school provides for the proper em ploym ent of absolutely every mi nute of the boy's entire time- day and night. Recognizing the immaturity of the boy, his present inabi lity to do this for h imself, it so d iv ides his time between work, pla y a nd rest that each m inute is defini tely ass igned to a definite purpose.

Purposelessness, a nd the lax ity of I ife it breeds, a re permitted at no point to touch his li fe. l t has been a rgued tha t th is sort of di rection d iscourages initiative a nd minimizes the boy's indiv iduality . It is sufficien t a nswer to state that the racts d isprove this in p ract ica lly every case. The m ili tary school regime leaves sufficient latitude for the heal th • exercise o f a ll proper initiative ; a nd certa inl y no schools make a more splendid showing upon the individuality of their graduates.

The fact is, constructive initia tive thrives upon wise direction - a thing vastly d ifferent from r epress ion. And this distinction is never lost sight of in the military school of today.

A tremendou s amount of energy in the PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE :\lajor ~larquess Wallace average boy, lacking such d irection, wastes itself in frivolous if not vicious channels. It is like the force released in firing a charge of gunpowder-unconfined, it wastes itself in bootless noise and smoke ; but held in one d irection it speeds the bullet to the mark. To this compulsory application of his energies to desirable achievement is attributed much of that superiority of scholarship and physique, which distinguish the average military school alumnus.

In the average community, three luxuries of modern life militate powerfully

against the scholastic advancement of the boy of milita ry school age. The t elephone, the automobile and the moving picture show nullify, to a degree incom prehensible to the average parent, the constructive inAuence of the ord ina ry school.

The boy attending a publ ic or pa rochial school, and living at home, may mean to devote his evenings to hard study. He may ta ke his books home wit h h im , with every serious intention to spend his evenings with them. But a telephone call info rms him that his .. crowd .. is going for an automobile ride- or to a moving picture show.

The boy is not to blame. He is a boy; it is his .. crowd" that calls- a crowd with whom he is justly popular ; his mother is thoroughl y sympa thetic ; the j oy-rid e, o r the movie show, is an attraction in itself. The net result is tha t he spends the evening with his .. crowd" and his lessons on the morrow bear witness to the fact .

At the modern military school such an event would be absolutel y impossible.

Here the boy's evening belongs to him. It is dedicated to stud y a nd to recrea tion according to a wise plan, which enables him to extract from his every minute the maximum of both profit and pleasure.

The ratio of instructors to students in the modern military training school is always very large. Classes of 10 to 15 are regarded as full. E very boy recites every lesson every day. The overAowing class room of the ordinary school is here unknown.

To this fact is due much of the stronger personality of the military school grad• , • --..~-cw uate ; for it relieves class roorn • ~..,-~---- • y ~~..-:::: work of a la rge measure of its -~.-· usual mechanical dul lness, and elicts to a much greater degree the personal element in a ll recita tions.

Besides the modern military school instructor is always a specialist.

No instructor is regarded as qualified for a position in a school of this character unless he can bring to his work not only exhaustive information, but irrepressible enthusiasm. H e must possess the faculty of engaging the attention and enlisting the li vliest interest of his students. This holds good not only in class room, but upon the playground and 36

in the gymnasium as well. The whole atmosphere of the modern military school is one of bubbling interest.

If mention has not been made of the moral training afforded in such schools, it is not because this phase of the boy·s training is lightly valued here, or neglected; but rather it might be reserved for special emphasis following consideration of other phases of his school life. The truth is that nowhere- not even in sectarian institutions of the most pronounced t ype- is more emphasis placed upon these essentials of moral a nd religious training which should form the basis of every educational system.

The strictest morality is enjoined in every phase of the school life. The great, basic truths upon which good lives are founded, and by which true nobility of character is squared, are inculcated at every turn. They are taught b y precept and example, and are forced on the life o f the student b y the great plan of the school. They are never neglected.

D a il y chapel exercises constitute a regular feature of military school life. On Sund a ys each student is required to attend church services at least once- preferably a t a church of the denomination fa vored b y his own people. N o attempt is ever made to influence a boy for o r against any particular denomination.

One o f the more cogent reasons, if not the principal reason, of the superiority of the milita ry school for boys lies in the completeness of its plan. Here the whole day a nd night- work and play and rest- all are arranged for in advance, according to a plan which has been graduall 1 built up, tested, proved and found adequate through years o f the most exacting experience. And experience has pruned this plan of harshness and of inconsistencies- has made it the summary of all that is at once best and most agreeable to the normal boy.

This plan appeals to his personal and proper pride. It presents his duties in such forrn, and in such order, that their proper performance becomes a genuine pleasure.

It metes out his play (always under direction and leadership of an instructor) in the gra teful guise of reward for good work well done. It begets in him a passion for order, correctness, cleanliness and right living- a passion which surely, though gradually, infuses his character and becomes the very marrow of his bone.

inquire if, after all , there n1a not be son1ething good in a oung n1an who has not been able to hold a position where mere intelligence is required.

But yea rs of experience in the school business have taught us that one-half of these boys ,vere an1ong the brightest in their school. This would seem to upset the prevailing idea that a boy who does not succeed in school ,vill not succeed in life.

There are n1any and good reasons, however, \vhy the man who is a failure in life may have been a good student in his youth. Take an average boy for an example. He is active, bright, fond of outdoor life, loves to be moving about, possibly is a good athlete. Being an average boy, his work in his lessons is satisfactory. But there comes a tin1e, usually between the ages of fourteen and seventeen, ,vhen the boy begins to feel out of place ,vith his surroundings. He may be in a school ,vhere a large percentage of the students are girls, or may have a lady teacher who does not understand his make-up, or the teacher may be handicapped by too many pupils.

At any rate, the boy realizes that something is wrong; possibly, he is told that his girl classmates are getting ahead of him in his studies. The boy knows in a vague ,vay that he is not being adjusted to fit some,vhere in life. He kno,vs that all his teacher cares about hin1 is his sho,ving in the reports. He 1nust come up to a certain standard on all subjects, no matter ho,v unfit he is mentally to master some of them.

But his inclination n1eans nothing to his automatic teacher; it does to the boy. He realizes that unless he is adjusted to his capabilities he will be a failure in life. He

never can pass that examination in Roman rlistory, French or Algebra; also he feels that for him it is a waste of time to drag along any more. The outdoor life cal ls him ; he longs to be away from the bore of lessons he cannot understand, studies which he knows will never be of any benefit to him . He becomes discouraged, wants to drop out o f school ; he is not spurred on by his teacher; he is not encouraged by his pa rents, and the result is he leaves school.

In very many cases he ma y be told by his father that, since he would not stay in school, he can hustle for hirnself. He finds himself poorly equipped to earn a living a t that age. Then he is thrown upon the land, another untrained boy, a dishearten ed youth, who, as a man, is to b e a fai lure. For every place, frorn that which the labo rer fills in the facto ry to that of the professional man, dernands a specialized adj ustment. Rather than be condemned these boys should be pitied. Many a father, in the rush of his business, deprives his son of ·that careful attention which he so rnuch needs at the h igh school age.

Today those who rush into the market places of t he world do not know an ything about their own minds. They use their minds ; t hey use their emot ions a nd their intelligence, their attention and thei r memory, their feel ings and t heir wi ll , just as they use their muscles when they walk or play ball, withou t having a ny idea which muscles are really involved . M oreover, even if they know how t heir men ta l equipment is made up by nature, they do not reall y know wh ich menta l fa cili t ies are essential for a special kind of work. They do not see anything bu t t he rnost external aspects of the vocations, and thus, without any effort to adj ust t he m ind to the needs of the work, the overwhelming majority fo llows cha nce suggestions and hasty impressions in deciding on the activities of life. T he result is t ha t misfits are overabundant, and that the fa ilures do not know how to help themselves.

The movement toward vocational guidance on the part of thoughtful educato rs has started an effort to improve this wretched game with its human waste. But even they soon discover that the chief solution of the problem can come onl y from a careful study of the mind and of the mental demands of the various professi ons. This labor, therefore, must ultimately fall to the educator who studies professionall y the human mind and the social demands on the mental mechanism.

Send him, therefore, to a school of this kind, where his character and d isposition are studied with a view to finding out for what vocation he is best suited· where he ' may be adjusted to pursue a calling for which he is physically and mentally adapted .

~__:.-']HE WAR has clone much to make the American people realize the value of_ . the training given in military schools. Every military school boasts a great number of its former cadets who became officers in some branch of the service.

In fact, at the beginning of the war the 1v1arines were almost entirely While our officered by military school graduates. object is not primarily to make soldiers, it is of great value to a young man to be well trained in military matters. The government realizes this and grants to graduates of our school who have passed the prope'r· examination, official recognition. Ou r military work does not in any way interfere with our class work, but rather insures the necessary physical training too often neglected in public schools.

WAR DEPARTMENT RECOGNITION

The Military Department of the school is under government superv1s1on. \Ve are fortunate in having associated with us, as representative of the \Var Department, an Army Officer and gentleman of the highest type. The War Department· furnishes the arms, ammunition and camping equipment necessary for the use of this school.

RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS

By direction of the President of the United States, a unit of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps is maintained at the Missouri Nlilitary Academy. The objects of the Government in the organization of a Reserve Officers' Training Corps are twofold: namely, to disseminate among young men attending schools and colleges the fundamental rnilitary principles of discipline and training, which will fit them to be Reserve Officers in case of national emergency, should they desire such a commission; secondly, to build up a better citizenship by building up young men mentally, morally and physically.

In this connection, it is desired to quote extracts from the order under the direction of which the Military Department operates. This order is signed by the Secretary of War : _"All s~bj~cts should be ~o taught that the student shall become capable of clear, qwck thmkmg, shall acquire the power of analysis and should have a faculty of concise, logical expression... " The following characteristics of an officer and gentleman, which are included in a proper disciplinary training should be insisted upon : Neatness in dress, cultivation of the manners and habit~ of a gentleman, dignified military bearing, loyalty, truthfulness, punctuality, kindl iness, earnestness of purpose and devotion to duty, the cultivation in the student body of esprit-«~-corps obedience to orders, acceptance of responsibility and avoidance of excuses.

General Order No. 9, \1/ar Department, February 17, 1920, makes provision '.or four bi-monthly inspections by a staff representative of the Department, which ms~ections are for the purpose of insuring and carrying out the War Department policy of training.

PHYSICAL TRAINING

From a physical standpoint the benefits are of vast importance.

I\!Iany a boy with round shoulders, a slouchy walk, or ·ungainly ca~~iage, leaves school with shoulders erect, a steady stride, a deep full chest, and a ruddy glow in his cheeks. Every day a drill in military movements or fn Physical Exercises is held. The boys with flabby chests, pale cheeks and soft muscles s·o o.n find themselves growing more robust; their lung capacity increases ; as the term prog-resses they take more and more interest in outdoor life, and finally, when the end of the year has come, instead of being heartily sick of school and everythipg- conn~cted with it, they look back with pleasure at the different school activiti~ in Which they have had a part.

ENCAMPMENT Instead of a regular spring vacation, which is an interruption . ·of our school work, we have an encampment. At this time we all live outdoors·'a nd enjoy to the fullest extent the life in the open. CHARACTER

so t hat in after life he is more often a leader than a fo llower. Then there . are the habits of neatness and punctuality. A military school is the best place for a boy who is leaving home for the nrst time. Accustomed at home to ha v ing all his wants looked after, his roorn cared for, all his clothing put awa y, he is in need of a school where he must care for all J1is personal property himself. Every morning he must police his own room, must have his shoes sh ined at every formation, and must be in his place on the line at the last note of the bugle. He cannot help learning habits of neatness and punctuality.

DISCIPLINE Every boy needs careful, sympathetic leadership and systematic training, especially that one who has not learned obedience or has grown headstrong and indifferent from neglect or from bad associations. The proper place for such is in a school where the men in authority have made boys a study-who can cornmancl their obedience and respect, a nd give them aid and sympathy of the right kind.

The best discipline is that which effects the best physical, mental and moral results with the least friction and in the shortest time. It is the idea of the inexperienced that the harder the rules of school and the severer the punishment the ?etter the discipline. This is simply puerile and dangerous. No harm, but great good 1s accomplished if the weakness of boys can be corrected without severe methods.

Respect, confidence and the highest obedience may thus be inspired, while rough ~andling is often irritating to the proud spirit and may drive to rebellion and desperation.

We endeavor, therefore, to avoid the common error in the training of boys.

Schools too often make the mistake of substituting discipline and routine for personal guidance, treating boys either in the mass or emphasizing too strongly the individual. \Ve make the boy understand that we hold him responsible for obedience. \Ve believe in his having a "good time" when he has earned it.

TOBACCO

The use of tobacco in any of its forms is positively forbidden .

OUR SYSTEM

Unlike most military schools we have a system by which a cadet's privileges are based on his class work and deportrnent and not on his classification and official standing. The better grades a boy makes and the better his deportment record the more privileges he gets. In other words, a cadet gets exactly what he earns. This fair, common-sense method of treatment appeals to all cadets and makes for a contented student body.

Occasionall y a request is received for a cadet to be a llowed to withdraw a few clays before a vacation or the close of school. This is an irregularity which is very unfortunate in its results. Unless each one is in his place an injustice is clone both to the school and to the other cadets.

Academic Department The Academy offers courses in the following schools : Lower School, Upper School, Graduate Course.

LO'WER SCHOOL The Lower School offers standard courses in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grades. See page 102 for a discussion of the Lower School.

UPPER SCHOOL The courses of study in the Upper School are designed to require fi ve years of study b y the average boy. The first year is equivalent to the eighth grade of the standard grammar school course, and the remaining four years approximate closel y the courses of our best high schools.

Four courses of instruction are offered in the last four years of the Upper School: the Classical, the Scientific, the General and the Commercial.

THE CLASSICAL This course offers abundant preparation for the Arts courses COURSE of any College or University. It is particularl y designed for students to enter Princeton, Harva rd or Yale. Four years of languages are included and the College entrance requirements in English, i\!fathematics, History and Science.

THE SCIENTIFIC This course is intended for cadets wishing to prepare for Technical and Engineering schools. It also offers preparation for COURSE entrance to State Universities and Colleges.

THE COMMER- This course is also particularly designed to meet the needs of those cadets who wish to fit themselves for early entrance into CIAL COURSE the business world. The technical business subjects are offered in this course.

THE GENERAL This course is designed to rneet the needs of those cadets who desire to fit themselves for early entrance to the business world.

DEBATING TEAiVl

One of the most common complaints against modern education is its failure to teach the students to write and to spell correctly. 'vVe believe that boys cannot get too much instruction in these subjects, and therefore make then1 compulsory. In spelling special

emphasis is laid on the common words so often misspelled.

Our school is a member of the North Central Association of ADMISSION Colleges and Secondary Schools. This entitles our graduates TO COLLEGE to enter any college or university without examination where admission is allowed on certificate. Membership in the association is a stamp of genuine merit. It is conferred only on schools that have a large force of college and university trained teachers that are specially prepared for their line of work; classes that are small; a good scholastic atmosphere, which insures consistent study and real accomplishment; work that meets. the hearty approval of the inspector; and a good record made by graduates that go to college. Ivlissouri Military Academy is also a member of the Association of Military Schools and Colleges of the United States.

CLASSIFICATION

No examination is required f~r admission. Cadets are assigned to those classes for which they are best fitted by

their previous training.

Applicants for admission to the sophomore or higher class~ must submit their credits from an accredited high school or academy. Every applicant should furnish references as to his character a~d habits.

DIPLOMAS We grant diplomas or certificates of graduation to all who successfully pass satisfactory exarninations in fifteen credits of high school work and in one credit of Nlilitary Science and Tactics. Norma lly four credits are completed each year. An average grade of 80 in all subjects is required for college

entrance recommendation.

STUDY HALL The aim of the Study Hall is to ·effect a proper adjustment of the boy in his school work. It is not only a place for the boy to study and to receive supervision and help in his work, but also, _and essentially, it is a place for the psychological study of the boy. In the Study Hall we deal only with the boy who has difficulty in some branch of his work. The education of boys calls for special attention to methods of effecting individual adjustment. The Study Hall represents our efforts to achieve this. Here the student and his problems are handled directly in response to the needs of the student as an individual.

DEBATING It is recognized that the ability to express one's self forcibly before . an audience is always a great advantage to young men. An oppor~un'.ty for training in this work is given by means of debates in the class rooms and m mter-school contests.

HE Department of Music is a feature of great importance.

The teachers in charge are competent to give instruction in all kinds of instrumental and vocal music. Music may be pursued as a special or regular study, credit being given in the cultural course to all students whose work is satisfactory.

A band is a necessity in a military school. It puts life into its drill and sports, and helps to maintain school spmt. Daily rehearsals and frequent concerts make it possible to develop a very efficient military and concert band. Instruction in the band is free.

THE BAND

In addition to the Band, the school maintains two orchestras, instruction in which is free to all students whose proficiency entitles them to a place in either organization. The concert orchestra plays for school entertainments and Commencement exercises. The dance orchestra plays for all the student dances, has also had engagements in other cities, and often

plays for the banquets of the Mexico Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. This orchestra also broadcasts from stations in this state.

Our aim is to lay a good foundation for beginners, to develop further technique of advanced students, to understand the composer"s musical idea and to develop the individuality of each student.

This department has been created for those who desire indi vidual training in voice, ear and sight reading. The course entitles the student to two lessons per week.

VOICE

GLEE CLUB

The Glee Club is an organization open to those who have some sense of harmony and rythm and can learn to carry a part. The possession of an extra good voice and the ability to read at sight are not required, but are strong assets. Membership in the Club is free to all.

THE ·scHOOL Throughout the year the cadets edit and publish a pap~r, "The PAPER M. M. A. Dances are given at the Academy through~ut the year. \Ve respect the views of those patrons who do not believe in dancing. Consequentl y, every cadet is required to present permission from home.

SOCIAL The social side of the cadet's life receives clue attention. A part of FEATURES every young man ·s education should be prepa ration to take his place in the social world. He must have the ability to meet his fellowman when he goes out into the world in such a way as to reflect credit upon himself and his associates. Many opportunities a re offered whereby he may become at ease in the presence of strangers.

Military receptions are given annuall y, and here he m eets the best people of Mexico and forms many friendships which are a benefit to him throughout life.

In addition to this, Hardin College for \Vomen gives receptions each year, and there are numerous social gatherings in the city to which the cadets are always welco_me. Cadets have the privilege of calling upon young ladies in 1v1exico and at Hardm College, after approval by the school authorities.

We a re a non-sectarian school and adhere to no certain creed but we do believe in compulsor; church attendance. Every Sunday morning the battalion is marched to town for the purpose of attending church services. Cadets may attend the church of their choice.

A faculty officer has charge of each squad. Sickness alone will excuse a cadet from attending church.

GOVERNMENT

HAZING We have no hazing at the Missouri Military Academy. We believe hazing has no place whatever in any school.

The absence of this evil at our school is largely due to the fact that we do not allow upper classmen to administer any punishment whatever on lower classmen.

Many schools still make the sad mistake of allowing old boys to punish new boys for certain violations of rules and regulations. This practice, in our opinion, belongs to the Dark Ages.

'N PURSUANCE of our policy of a well-rounded education, 'd we lay particular stress on physical development. A youth ·s . success in school depends quite as much upon the health of ,·i~ his body as upon the state of his mind. The student has need of greater strength and health of body than the artisan, :~~ * ~1 ,: . because mental work is severely exacting and ph ysicall y exhaustive. It is necessary, therefore, that he keep his body in the best possible condition. As stated before, our mi litary training has this for its chief aim. But if we depended solel y upon drill, very little progress would be made, for it would become irksome and the cadet would soon tire of it, thus defeating one of the chief aims of the school-to stimulate the interest of the young man. Hence we have well organ ized departments of athlet ics and gymnastics.

PHYSICAL All cadets are required to spend at least two periods per week in TRAINING some form of supervised athletics-football, baseball, basketball,

track, tennis, swimming, boxing, wrestling or golf.

Each company has as rnany teams as are necessary to take care of all the cadets in that company. E ach company also has its own individual coach. The company games, played each week , a re as close and as interesting as the regular varsity contests.

Our experience, however, has dernonstrated forcibl y the error of this belief, for our best athletes have been almost without exception our best students. Hence we have made athletics a very important feature of this school.

Besides the unquestionable physical advantages accruing from athletic training, the cadet also derives those very important lessons- perseverance, self-control , selfreliance, and ability to think and to act quickly . But athletics improperly governed sometimes work more harm than good . In this school all the athletics are under the direct supervision of the faculty . The students have nothing whatever to do with the management of this department. No cadet may take part in athletics unless he maintains a certain average in his class work. At no time is team practice or any work of an athletic nature allowed to interfere with the study and recitation of the cade_ts. Second and third teams in each sport have their own coaches just as the varsity teams. Even the grade school boys have their own coach.

On the theory that the benefits of football outweigh its objectionable features and that the latter may be minimized 'or wholly removed by proper supervision, this game is encouraged at the Academy. Excellent facilities for the sport are provided and skilful and judicious coaches are employed.

An opportunity is given each cadet to become a member of an organized team under the supervision of a competent coach. The varsity and second teams ~ave regular schedules with other schools . hrnpany teams play a regular weekly sc edule and company letters are awarded.

Company contests are interesting, and furnish good practice as well ~s exercise. Basketball is probably the most popular of all the sports. BASEBALL Our baseball diamond affords opportunity for the enjoyment of this popular game, for the diamond is one of the very best in the state. In addition to the varsity and second teams there are company teams which have a regular weekly schedule. \1/ith such a program, every cadet is gi ven an opportunity to become a member of a team, and earn a company letter.

TRACK This is one branch of athletics where competition is unlimited, for track teams are not confined to any certain number of men. The sport is wholesome and the choice of many cadets.

Li ke t rack, t ennis is excellent recreation for all cadets. The school has fi ve fine courts, which are always occupied during tr.e playing seasons.

In the fall a nd spring, tournaments a re held in which any cadet may enter. N!atches a re also p layed with other school teams, and a company tournament is an annual affair.

SWIMMING

Every cadet is taught to swim and must pass a standard test. lnter-company contests have greatly increased the interest in this sport. The pool is open the entire school yea r and the water is kept at the proper t emperature.

The lower school is for boys in the second, third, fourth, fifth , sixth and seventh grade (the eighth grade work is included in our upper school and is known_as the Junior Department), and is entirely separate from the upper school. It has its o':n teachers, building, dining room, playground, and in every way is a separate, distinct organization.

PURPOSE The purpose of the Lower School is to be the complement of the home in the thorough training of a limited number of boys. Each boy is treated as an individual and is an object of special study by the teachers. He is taken through a definite course of training to develop his physical, mental and moral powers, and constant influence is brought to bear to cause_him to use these powers in the right way, and for the right purposes. It is far better for boys to enter this Department than to wait until they are older and then enter the upper school.

The close association of the Faculty with the cadets in our Lower School fur-• nishes them an excellent opportunity to teach self-reliance, responsibility, moral courage and consideration of others in such a way that these qualities become a part of the boys who make our school their home.

BUILDING The main building used by the Lower School is well adapted to its purposes. It contains sleeping rooms for the boys, classroom, game room, library, linen room, shower and tub baths. It is lighted by electricity, and is heated with steam.

DINING ROOM The Lower School dining room is located in the administration . . . building, which is only about fifty feet from the barracks.

GYMNASIUM AND The gymnasium and swimming pool are situated only about SWIMMING POOL tw? ~un~lred fee~ from the Lower School building. This . . butld11:g 1s used m common with the Upper School. The swimming pool 1s open the entire school year, and the water, of course, is heated to the proper tem ~erature during the winter months. Swimming is certainly a most popula r sport with the younger boys, and they spend many happy afternoons and evenings in the water. Every cadet is taught to swim and a teacher is always present when they a re us ing t he pool LIBRARY AND READING ROOM

The library and reading room which are used in common with the upper school, a re situated in the Lower School building.

There are special books in the library for the younger boys, and the reading room is supplied with many of the current magazines and daily newspapers.

PLAY GROUND The Lower School has a separate play ground with gridiron a nd baseball diamond. The quarter mile cinder t rack is used in common wi th the upper school.

ROOMS AND \Vith few exceptions the sleeping arrangements are for two boys ROOMMATES in a room . Each boy has a single bed. All of the rooms a r~ well heated, well lighted, and equipped with the necessary furrnt~ re.

We encourage the boys to take a special interest in _their rooms, and ~hey may bn~g with them, curtains, pennants, and pictures for this purpose. There are two wm-

Cadets are originally assigned to rooms according to the elate of applicat1on, m such a way that boys of about the same age and_school grade_ are together. The final assignment of rooms and roommates rests _with the. Supen_ntendent ~nd Principal, who consider each boy"s happiness and best interests 111 makmg the assignments.

In so far as it is consistent with the best interest of all concerned, boys already members of the school have the first consideration in the re-assignment of rooms.

WEEKLY LETTER The cadets are required to write at least one letter home each week. This particular letter is written Sunday afternoon, and is read by the Principal, and sometimes the boys are required to correct the mistakes. These letters are then mailed I"v1onclay afternoon or Tuesda y morning.

Any other letters that the cadets may write home are not read, and the letters they receive are not read by the school authorities.

PLAY The importance of keeping a boy's whole time occupied cannot be emphasized too much. We have worked out a most elaborate scheme of work and play, and thi~ year in our Lower School of thirty boys, we have developed t.wo football elevens, six basketball teams, and will have three teams in baseball.

1:'he ~eachers are always in charge of the play, and we see to it that every boy's play time 1s used to the best advantage. No strenuous exercise is permitted to the extent that it would impair a boy's health.

MUSIC Th~. ~ower _School boys_ devote_ two hours per week to music and they pa1 t1c1pate in the following musical organizations: Glee Club, Orchestra Band, an~ D1:um and Bugle Corps. Special instruction is offered in piano violi~ and the wmcl mstruments. ' - -- -- - -

The cadets must be in bed by eight o'clock in the winter months, and not later than eight thirty in the fall and spring. They may go to bed earlier than this if they so desire. \Ve believe in lots of sleep, and good, wholesome food.

CLEANLINESS The teachers take the place of the mothers in seeing to it that the boys are clean. About thirty minutes before each meal, all the boys are required to go to the wash room, and the teachers assist them in washing up. Not only their hands and faces must be clean, but their finger nails and the back of their ears are also inspected. As every boy is required to take a shower bath before entering the swimming pool, they are almost guaranteed at least one bath a day and very often two.

TABLE MANNERS Good table manners are taught and enforced as a very essential part of the school training. The spirit of the dining room is always cheerful. The teachers and instructors, who preside at the table, not only attend to the material wants of the boys, but see that there is good order, unselfishness and courtesy. The improvement in table manners is one of the results of the school training often noticed by parents and strangers, who see the cadets eating in public places.

WEEKLY 'vVe recommend that parents make provision for $1.00 a week ALLOWANCE spending money fo r their boys. They are al lowed to attend the picture show once or twice a week with an instructor, and they are a lso permitted to buy ice cream and other sweets on these occasions ; and they need some money with which to pu rchase some little items that they may happen to want.

UNIFORMS The cadets are required to wear the regulation Academy uniform.

The complete uniform outfit includes all the articles of cloth!ng a boy wi ll n eed except underwear and socks. A detailed statement of the urnform requirements may be fo und on page 118.

EXPENSES The foregoing charges cover tuition in all academic branches, military instruction and the following items : board, room, heat, light, table linen, laundry not in excess of $3 .00 per month, medical attention of the school surgeon in ordinary ailments at the Academy, physical examinations, gymnasium work, athletics, use of swimming pool, admission to games and meets at home. \Vhen cadets are confined to the Hospital, there is a reasonable per clay charge to take care of additional expenses for meals, extra linen, etc. If a consultation or the attention of a special nurse is required, the expenses connected therewith will be borne by the cadet concerned. .

SPECIAL Cadets are admitted only upon the express condition that they CONDITIONS remain at the Academy until the end of the school year. In case a cadet is suspended or dismissed for misconduct or breach of sc~~ol discipline, or leaves the Academy before the end of the school year, then any tu1t1~n? fees or other charges, or any money already paid to the Academy on account of turt1on, fees or other_ cha_rges, shall be retained by it as earned or as liquidated damages, and any unpaid bills on account of these items shall become immediately clue an? payable to the Academy as earned or liquidated damages. PROPERTY Property damaged by cadets will be repaired at their expense.

DAMAGE POCKET Pocket money will be issued to cadets, provided a fund is left on deposit MONEY with the Academy for the purpose, in amounts not to exceed $2.00 per week. 'vVe make this requirement for disciplinary reasons. For example, when a cadet carelessly destroys any of his school supplies, he is required to replace them out of his pocket money. We recommend for lower school cadets, $1.00 per week; eighth grade and Freshmen $1.25 per week; Sophomores $1.50 per week ; Juniors and Seniors $2.00.

As a matter of convenience to cadets, the Academy maintains a Quartermaster department wh~re t ext books, sc~ool supplies, toilet supplies, underclothing, linens and such sundries as may be required by the cadet, are sold to him at not to exceed the usual retail p rices of such articles. The Quartermaster also looks after the repairing o f shoes and clothing, cleaning and pressing, and any other necessary expenditures which have to do with the welfare and comfort of the cadet.

The cost of the necessary quartermaster supplies, not including uniform requirements, will not exceed $ 12. SO per month.

The unifo rm and equipment is handled through the Quartermaster department. An initial deposit u pon entrance of $125.00 is required by the Quartermaster and is credited t o the account of the cadet. The remainder of the cost of the complete uniform outfit and initial outlay for books and incidentals will be payable in October on receipt of a statement from the Quartermaster of the exact amount.

The rooms are completely. equipped with the neces~ary f l!rniture. A cadet may bring with him a window seat or lock box, whose d1mens1ons should not exceed 12 inches by 12 inches by 30 inches; also, a. small_ table lamp. Cadets are enc~uraged to decorate their rooms and may bring with th~m a sm_all rug, curt~m~, pennants and photographs. We prefer that the decorations be simple and art1st1c and refer you to the rooms shown on pages 15 and 109 of this catalog.

Cadets should bring with them any athletic equipment or musical instruments that they may expect to use.

Extra and unnecessary articles should be excluded from the Cadet's equipment as they a re not permitted in the quarters.

Keepsakes such as rings and watches, or any articles of unusual value or about which there is family sentiment, should not be included in a cadet's equipment.

CAUTIONS

TRUNKS Trunks must be plainly marked with name and residence printed on both ends, so that in case of miscarriage they may be easily traced and recovered.

No responsibility will be assumed by the school for articles of clothing, books, etc., that are left at the Academy during the summer vacation, or after the cadet has departed from the institution, unless they are securely packed in boxes or lockers, plainly marked with owner's name, and written notice given to the school authorities.

THE M. M. A. BANK

This bank is conducted solely for the convenience of the cadets.

Money can be deposited any time and drawn out at the depositor's c~mvenience. No amount is too small to open an account with, and checks for as small a sum as ten cents are cashed.

All business is clone according to standard banking rules. ~very ch_eck must be properly filled out and signed before it 1s recogr:uzed. Boys are hereby taught how to handle money, ~nd busmess methods are instilled that later will stand them in good stead .
