LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

t is hard to believe this is my final Cherry Diamond article. It has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve the Missouri Athletic Club and its members as the Club’s 108th President.

The first person I need to thank is my wife, Ann. She has been extraordinarily patient with me (more than usual) over the past year. I have appreciated and relied upon her support very much during this time. The reality is that while I have certainly enjoyed my position and service to the MAC, this has not been a small job and has taken some time. Thanks, Ann, for sharing me with the MAC! (The good news is that Ann loves our Club as much as I do, if not more!)

I also must thank and express my sincere appreciation to my Board classmates: First V.P. Cheri McLaughlin, Treasurer Mark McClanahan, Second V.P. Mark Niemeyer, and Secretary Aaron Pawlitz. They have been outstanding Governors as well as terrific colleagues. They answered the bell repeatedly, all in service to the Club. Their dedication of time, talent and commitment to the MAC and its members has been unwavering. The deep friendships my class has developed would not have happened without service on the Board. And for that, I am very appreciative. It was a memorable experience I shall not forget.

I was also honored to have served with the other Governors on this year’s excellent and cohesive Board. I am excited that President-elect Jodi Petersen will take the gavel at the board meeting in May. She will be up to the task and lead our Club well. I will support her in any way needed. Our strong network of Past Presidents and Governors will support her, as they always do. Presidentelect Petersen’s excellent Board classmates, Governors Tom Dankenbring, Tim Maynard, Gary Sextro and Jeff Wehmer, have all been outstanding leaders. I know they will continue to serve the MAC with distinction.

Last but certainly not least, I am grateful for our current first-year Board class’s service, efforts, and commitment, including Governors Adrian Di Bisceglie, Carrie Burggraf, Mike Kozeny, Matt Masiel and Dave Sweeney. It has been my immense pleasure to serve with you.

In my first Cherry Diamond article from June 2023, I wrote: “We will work hard as a Board to live up to our Vision and Mission statements in all things we undertake. And if we can move the Club even a bit closer to meeting these high standards, it will be a successful year indeed.” This seemed a simple goal on the one hand, but it was also all-encompassing on the other hand, particularly during a significant leadership transition.

Our Club’s Vision and Mission statements are powerful, aspirational and inspirational, and they were very much top of mind for us at every single Board meeting over the past year:

VISION To be the foremost private Club in St. Louis known for attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations.

MISSION To create extraordinary experiences in all aspects of club life in the spirit of excellence, service, and tradition.

Over the past year, with the efforts of our Board, our new GM/COO Chip Misch and his dedicated team, I am confident we met our goal to move our Club closer to meeting the Vision and Mission of our Club. I also feel confident that our Board and its new leaders will keep the Club moving in the right direction. The Club is in good hands.

Speaking of Chip, a key highlight from this last year was the GM leadership transition, an important job our Board assumed this past year. The transition unfolded nicely; hopefully, from your perspective, it looked more effortless and more seamless than it was! From the beginning, Chip has worked extremely hard to get “better” in all things at the MAC. He was all in from the beginning. I believe Chip will have a long and successful career leading the MAC, and I cannot wait to see more of what “better” looks like in the coming months and years. Look around

either Clubhouse and see what has been happening. You cannot miss the “better.” What might “best” look like?

And we have learned over the past year that “better” does matter — a lot. Here are a few numbers that reflect this:

F Member numbers are at a record high since 2009 (as of the date this article is submitted, the MAC has 2615 members). By comparison, we had 2368 members in 2011.

F Total initiation fees this fiscal year will significantly exceed any (at least recent) prior year; we are tracking at 67% over last year.

F Member retention is significantly improved. Pre-COVID, in 2017-2018, we hovered around an attrition rate of 10%. Given what we are accomplishing, we are averaging 4% attrition, and I believe that number will decrease even further.

F Members are also using the Club more, reflected by the $1.0 million year-overyear increase in our (non-dues) operating revenue.

These are just a few items, and there are more I could cite, but they illustrate how our members have responded to efforts to try to meet our Vision and Mission and make the MAC better in all aspects. Members are staying put, joining, paying elevated initiation fees, and using their Club more than ever. As a private club, member engagement and satisfaction are the most essential “return on investment” metrics.

And the ceiling for our Club remains far away. We have a great, historic Club and a great group of members. We are critical to the St. Louis region. The sky is the limit: Let’s go!

I would be remiss not to thank all our great MAC employees. Our staff makes things happen day in and day out. Our employees have been instrumental in the migration to “better.” Period. They show up to make the member experience what it is. I have said this before, but please try to thank an MAC employee next time you are at the Club. It matters.

Regarding ongoing matters, here are a couple of updates. Given the generosity of current and former Governors, Past Presidents and others, the 6th Floor Board Room and Dining Room renovation project is underway. We are excited for this enhanced and revitalized space for our Board of Governors and all members to enjoy. Private dining spaces, a renewed Board room area, and a dining room are long overdue.

The Board has also been focused on locating a Clayton amenity for our members, as you all know. We understand that a significant portion of our membership would find such an amenity important and would pay for it. While this Clayton process has undoubtedly dragged on, the issues are complicated for several reasons, and there are many things that the MAC cannot control timing-wise at the end of the day. That said, the Board remains committed to exploring every opportunity to achieve an outcome in Clayton for our members. We understand the Clayton discussion and gossip can be distracting. Our goal has been to decide on this topic as soon as possible, but a good and thoughtful decision is better than a wrong and quick decision. We have chosen the thoughtful and deliberate path to a decision that we hope you will understand and appreciate. And please tell your friends: we have not decided yet!

Finally, I want to recognize Governor Pawlitz, his committee, Jim Wilson and his team for their work with the U.S. Basketball Writers Association College Basketball Awards. The latest celebration of the best in college basketball took place at the MAC on April 17, and it was a tremendous success. Thanks to all for their tremendous efforts.

Again, I thank the Club and its members for the opportunity to serve. It has been my great honor and pleasure.

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

May brings with it much enthusiasm – with Cardinals baseball, Battlehawks football, CITY SC soccer and summer fun at the West Clubhouse and, of course, golf!

Amidst all the fun, there is continued progress operationally, and I am pleased to update all members on the following MAC “news:”

Projects-wise, we are in the middle of enhancing the West snack bar kitchen, which will be ready in time for Memorial Day! Gerard, Darrin and Chef Jess are planning for an elevated experience for the summer ahead. In addition to an expanded menu, we are also planning for dinner service on select days (weather permitting) and as we enter the Fall, we plan to offer a new and exciting coffee-house café experience year-round!

We are also upgrading our Board Room and meeting rooms on the 6th Floor at the Downtown Clubhouse. More information will be shared in the months to come, but the rejuvenated space will be a greatly enhanced experience for all members to take advantage of for meetings and intimate dinners. Our food and beverage team is carefully planning for this elevated offering, and we will begin taking reservations for the rooms soon.

Look for an announcement for Sunday Brunch returning to the West Clubhouse in June! This new a la carte offering will highlight Chef Jess’ creativity and is in response to the many requests to bring this back. As an adjustment to the schedule, we will be closing the West Clubhouse for dinner on a to-be-determined night, details to follow.

Easily, one of the most impactful elements to joining the MAC team has been understanding the rich history of the Club! At 120-years strong, the depth of tradition is undeniable and is truly a strength of the Club. I can confidently share that the leadership team joins me in embracing the past and planning for much future success! We see unlimited opportunities in enhancing the members’ experience and it is at the very heart of our ongoing planning efforts. In that spirit, there are a few relevant strategic initiatives worth noting:

F An ongoing initiative that paves the way for much future success is positioning the MAC as an “Employer of Choice.” Our future success is directly tied to our ability to retain and hire the best available employees in the market. Our initial focuses will be establishing relationships with partners that can introduce us to qualified prospective employees; competitive wages and benefits; elevated working conditions; and training! Our collective operational focus has been “what does better look like?” and the same approach applies to our exceptional team of nearly 500 employees! Ideally, we are striving for minimal turnover! The overarching impact is a noticeably enhanced member experience – at all levels!

F All of our planning is driven by “Best in Class!” The MAC was founded as an athletic club and the services and amenities we look to improve, enhance and expand on will begin with all things athletics! We continue to research and anticipate the future of the Club on all levels and with this will be careful analysis on usage and metrics to support thoughtful decision making. The BEST private clubs are ultimately defined by the quality of its members and team of employees. The recent arrival of our Director of Training, Jenni Aremka, has been an impactful one and will play an integral role

in developing our team at every position. In addition to our emphasis on safety, we are implementing a series of programs driven to enhancing our service culture. Gracious, consistent and welcoming service will soon be a hallmark of the MAC. We anticipate continuous progress in the year ahead. We are also evaluating our special events and programs at the MAC, which we also believe to be key drivers to the members’ experience. We have much to offer and the “something for everyone” approach provides so many wonderful opportunities to add to the MAC membership experience. It is worth acknowledging how important a committed and competent management team is to our “Best in Class” agenda, as they are collectively the engine that executes better, day-in and day-out! I am energized by the professionalism and commitment throughout the operation and firmly believe we are poised for relentless improvement.

F This summer we will be initiating two important strategic initiatives. First up, we have retained Club Benchmarking, an industry expert in a wide range of products and services, to conduct independent Reserve Studies at the West and Downtown Clubhouses. The comprehensive process conducts on-site inspections and prepares reports of all infrastructure, furnishings, fixtures, equipment, etc. and prepares asset schedules that support (and validate) effective capital and project planning. Such a process supports the Planning and Finance Committees and the Board in developing longrange financial plans. As the process comes to a close, I will be certain to share the particulars of the findings. Secondly, we will begin Master Planning efforts at the West Clubhouse, supported by Peacock + Lewis, a leading architecture and planning firm from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Master Planning is a comprehensive and immersive process that initiates a series of engaging processes, including member focus groups and surveys that ultimately leads to a defined approach for enhancing the club experience in terms of facilities, services and amenities. There will be much more on this as we initiate the process in the months ahead. The key to all of this is that an effective Master Plan, with a proven leader, is a best-in-class practice essential to the long-term success of the Club. It is worth noting that once we are finished with the West Clubhouse planning, we will begin planning efforts Downtown.

The arrival of the new MAC mobile app is approaching its launch in May and there will be significant communication in the weeks ahead. This new app also happens to be with the leader in private clubs, Pacesetter Technology. The upgrades will be evident and incorporate some important security features. Please look for details in this issue of the Cherry Diamond and future communications as we prepare to launch this essential communication tool for the MAC!

Very Best Regards,

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

STATEMENT

My wife and I celebrated our wedding reception at the MAC in 2011 and began married life in Washington, D.C. We returned home to St. Louis in 2014 and became MAC members ourselves a few years later, something I had dreamed of doing since I first set foot in the Club. Now with three young children, our family enjoys spending summer days and nights at the West pool, dinners in the Stan Musial Grill, and various kids’ activities and holiday events offered throughout the year.

I have had so many good times and fostered so many great friendships during my time at the MAC. Some of my favorite personal activities include playing basketball, doing cardio tennis, hanging out at the Jack Buck Grill or 1903 Bar, partaking in pre- and post-event festivities downtown (ballgames, concerts, etc.), and lunch buffet dining as often as I can.

I believe serving on the Board will allow me to give back to the Club that has given me and my family so much and that my background as an accountant, tax lawyer, and small business owner will be an asset to the Club and the Board. To that end, I would greatly appreciate one of your five votes and the opportunity to serve you on the Board.

My volunteer experience has focused on leading and facilitating teams of stakeholders. I consider myself an authentic and inclusive leader with exceptional interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, executing through a style of transparency in establishing, enhancing, and maintaining effective relationships Initially, I joined the MAC as a place to bring clients and friends. As I began to immerse myself in activities, several friendships developed. It is the balance of activities for families, single and married members, professional and athletics, that creates a focus of genuine kindness and philanthropy. This resonates with my personal values. If elected, I look forward to building upon the traditions and excellence of the MAC yet changing with the times. Thank you for your consideration.

STATEMENT

Being a member of the MAC has been a deeply rewarding professional and personal experience. I have developed relationships that have enriched me in many ways, and I am grateful for the fellowship and camaraderie I have experienced at the Club. The MAC is truly a special place. I look forward to a lifetime of membership and continued commitment to the Club.

I am honored to be considered for the MAC Board of Governors, and I believe my professional, board, and Club experience make me well-equipped to serve. I have had the privilege of serving on the Governance Committee where I have learned the inner workings of MAC governance. I have also served in key leadership roles on several boards of other organizations where I have been a positive, effective leader and consensus builder. As a partner at Lewis Rice, my practice includes helping clients navigate difficult situations and problem-solving at the highest levels.

It would be an honor and a privilege to serve the organization that has enriched me in countless ways. If elected, I will work hard to serve the Club, its membership, and the wonderful staff.

Since joining the MAC my family has become fully engrossed in all aspects of the club. Over the past few years, the club has made a lot of improvements with many more on the horizon. As the father of a young family these changes excite me not only for the improved experience, but for the long-term betterment of the club. My unique combination of having a young family, being a business owner, and my profession as building enclosure consultant brings valuable perspective and skills to the board of governors. Being nominated to join the Board of Governors is an honor but the idea of being elected and becoming involved in the club’s future is truly exciting. Platinum Partnership Benefit Category

The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception over 10 years ago, helping to boost member referrals and spur Club growth during a crucial time. In the decade since this tool was first implemented, the Club and our recruitment practices have evolved, and Club leadership remains committed to elevating the overall member experience and MAC profile. With that in mind, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes:

F The opportunity to enroll in the Platinum Partnership benefit category will be closing on June 11, 2024. This will not alter the benefits of this category to members currently enrolled or to those who are eligible and enroll before the deadline. All new and current members participating in the Platinum Partnership category as of June 11 will remain in this category and will continue to enjoy its benefits going forward without interruption, unless a category transfer or membership resignation is requested.

F New members joining in the month of June will be the last with the option to choose Platinum Partner as a category and any eligible current member transfers into this category must be finalized by this date.

F After June 11, 2024, no new or current members will be permitted to enroll into the Platinum Partner category. It will be closed to new enrollments.

F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the membership categories in the future.

MAC ART COLLECTION SPOTLIGHT

Scavenger Hunt

APRIL ANSWER:

This fine Dutch genre scene was presented to the MAC collection as a social bequest in the wills of the late Sophia and Adam Hartwig. The life-long artist, Charles E. Waltensberger, was born in Detroit, Michigan and trained at the school of the Detroit Museum of Art – an opportunity financed for him by the publisher of the Detroit Free Press, where Waltensberger later worked as an illustrator. During the 1890s, the artist was awarded a two-year scholarship to formally study and train in Paris. Until 1915, he split his time between Detroit and an artists’ colony in Laren, Holland and became best known for his soft-colored Impressionistic Dutch interiors. In later years, Waltensberger maintained a studio in Detroit, worked as an illustrator, and summered along the New England coast painting landscapes.

MAC BOOK CLUB

Thursday, May 9 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

Thursday, June 13 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

The Book Club begins its journey into ethnically diverse novels on Thursday, May 9 as Janet Mug leads the discussion of The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store: A Novel by James McBride. In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill, who worked together to keep the boy safe.

As these characters’ stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins of white, Christian America struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community —heaven and earth — that sustain us.

Our journey continues June 13, Cathy Beckette will guide the discussion of Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor. On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.

Major Boensch will draw on his services as a missile crew commander at nearby Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, and his 13 years of experience at Minuteman Missile NHS.

During the Cold War, thousands of Air Force personnel in Minuteman Missile fields throughout the Great Plains worked and lived around nuclear weapons that held unprecedented destructive power. It was these nuclear weapons that constantly threatened devastation of any aggressor nation that might consider launching a nuclear attach against the U.S. or its allies. This threat of destruction acted as a deterrent to enemies while paradoxically preserving an uneasy peace.

PROTEIN TIPS

FROM COACH MAGGIE

There are many types of protein out on the market, including whey protein. I encourage my clients to use whey protein powder to help meet their fitness goals – from building muscle, improving performance, or losing weight, protein is the key to success. Protein is known to increase satiety, which controls appetite, reduces overall calorie intake, and can help in weight loss efforts. Whey protein is a high-quality protein derived from milk. It is rich in essential amino acids, particularly leucine, which is important for muscle protein synthesis. It’s an easy and convenient way to increase protein intake, promote muscle growth, and support recovery after exercise.

THERE ARE THREE MAIN TYPES OF WHEY PROTEIN:

F Whey protein concentrate: Contains up to 50% lactose and between 30-80% protein. Use this if your activity level is average and you’re trying to boost your protein intake. Whey protein is ideal in protein smoothies as a meal replacement or to support weight loss. Premier Protein shakes are concentrated.

F Whey protein isolate: Contains little lactose (less than 1%) and at least 90% protein. This has lower amounts of

lactose and fat compared to whey protein concentrate, making it a suitable option for those who are lactose intolerant or have dietary restrictions. Typically, this type undergoes more processing to remove additional fats and carbohydrates, resulting in a purer protein product. This high-quality protein is a great choice for active individuals who want a higher protein content per serving without additional fats and carbohydrates. It’s extremely low carbohydrate content helps you cut calories while still giving your body what it needs to boost your musclebuilding efforts and avoid muscle protein breakdown. Whey protein isolate is excellent in pre- and postworkout protein shakes.

F Whey protein hydrolysate: This type is the most expensive of all whey proteins and contains an exceptionally high protein concentration of around 99%. It goes through a process called hydrolysis, in which the molecules are broken down to enhance absorption and digestion by the body. This form of whey protein is highly water-soluble and rapidly absorbed which helps make it beneficial for nutrition support.

There are many great brands available, however, my go-to is Phormula1 & Level 1. It goes through low-temperature processing which means that the protein was never exposed to high heat during processing or manufacturing. High heat can destroy the bioavailability of the protein before your body even gets the chance to use it. Cold pressing offers a more natural result without the presence of chemical contaminants left over after processing.

Phormula-1 is 100% Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate. It can be used for preworkout or as a post-workout recovery drink to help get you better results from your workouts.

Level 1 is a concentrated and isolated blend with amino acids necessary for muscle growth while preventing muscle breakdown. It can be used as a meal replacement or used as a snack any time of day or before bed.

GET CARE FASTER

Did you know that you may not need a prescription for physical therapy?

It’s called direct access, and it empowers you to be your own health care advocate. You may be able to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s prescription.*

This means you can start treatment more quickly to restore your strength, regain your skills and reduce any pain. Depending upon the diagnosis, your therapist at SSM Health Physical Therapy may recommend that you follow up with a physician or other licensed health care professional before beginning your treatment.

Getting therapy first may help you:

• Save time

• Save money

• Expedite treatment

• Avoid opioids

• Prevent surgery

• Vision difficulties If your physician does prescribe physical therapy, you are not obligated to receive physical therapy in any specific facility. You have the right to choose where you want to go.

When choosing the right physical therapy provider, SSM Health Physical Therapy offers:

• Therapists who are licensed by the state and many hold advanced certifications.

• Participation with most insurance plans, which may help to minimize any out-ofpocket expenses.

• Submission of claims to your insurance company and help estimating any personal financial responsibilities.

• Examples of comments our patients provided so that you may learn more about their experiences with our care.

• Accreditation by the Joint Commission, which ensures the highest level of quality and patient safety.

Remember:

You are the most important member of your health care team and are free to choose the rehabilitation provider that can best help you meet your goals.

up for a summer filled with fun activities.

Stay in the loop on all camp details before summer kicks off:

CAMP FAQ’S

1. Where/When is check-in and drop-off?

Check-in is every camp morning from 8:50-9:15 a.m. Each morning, Camp Coordinators can be found near the stairwell down to the gym. Here, they will sign-in campers for the day, and also answer any parent questions. Next, parents can proceed down to the gym to drop off their child.

2. Where/When is pick-up?

Pick-up is every afternoon from 3:50-4:15 p.m. down in the gym. Camp staff will check children out once they are picked up by a parent or guardian.

3. What should my child bring with them to camp?

Campers should come to camp in comfortable clothes and shoes for playing and physical activity. We recommend campers wear socks with closed-toed shoes and only bring flip flops for the pool.

Campers can bring an optional morning snack and afternoon snack. We recommend campers bring a water bottle with them each day.

Afternoon Campers will go to the pool each day and will need to bring a swimsuit and towel. Optional items for them to bring to the pool are sunscreen and flip-flops.

4. What will my child do each day at camp?

Campers get to experience the best of West! Mornings at camp usually include a tennis clinic, games with camp staff in the gym and time in the Youth Activity Room. After lunch, campers will get to spend their afternoons swimming in the pool, watching movies and doing crafts in the Youth Classroom, as well as occasional squash clinics, yoga classes, outdoor games and so much more!

Camp begins Tuesday, May 28 this year. We cannot wait for the fun to begin!

EXPERIENCED MEMBERS FIND CAMARADERIE IN THE MAC

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

The athletic facilities at both Clubhouses are filled with members from all walks of life, fostering a vibrant community of athletes engaged in various sports and activities. From racquet sports to youth activities, and fitness and wellness initiatives, the Club demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and active living.

More experienced members like Governor Gary Sextro, 70, find a sense of camaraderie through the Club’s athletics. Past Governor Sextro, a member since 1976, regularly plays basketball at the Downtown Clubhouse, appreciating both the game and the company of friends. Reflecting on his experience, Past Governor Sextro emphasizes the strong bonds formed within the MAC basketball community, “We have a phenomenal group with great camaraderie. A lot of us come to play basketball, some come just to hang out. It’s a great group of guys who like to be together.” Beyond basketball, Past Governor Sextro utilizes the Downtown Clubhouse’s weights and cardio equipment, where serendipity led him to meet his wife, Patti, while working out. His story underscores the multifaceted benefits of the Club’s facilities, extending beyond physical fitness to meaningful connections. Similarly, Mrs. Lisa Holley, 68, trains for triathlons at the West Clubhouse where she is inspired as she sees the same members consistently. She says they are “almost like accountability buddies” for her. Holley likens the West Clubhouse athletic facilities to the sitcom Cheers where “everybody knows your name.” She complimented the Club saying, “I am always welcomed by my name. The staff is wonderful. They are so accommodating and are always open to any

suggestion members have.”

Holley’s longstanding association with the Club, dating back to her college years, speaks to its enduring appeal and personalized service. From her early days as a lifeguard at the Town and Country Racquet Club (which is now the West Clubhouse) to her current membership with the MAC, she has witnessed the evolution of the facilities and continues to appreciate the personal touch that sets the MAC apart, “It’s a good atmosphere. The fitness equipment is great. I think anybody that is athletic minded at all would look at this facility and think ‘oh my gosh. This is my place,’” commended Holley. She encourages any member who has not taken advantage of the Club’s athletic offerings to “Go explore. There is a nook and cranny for everybody. There are just so many possibilities.”

INTERCLUB INTERVIEW: STEPHANIE SMITH STEADILY CLIMBS THE RANKS

This second edition of “Interclub Interviews” comes to us from a long-standing member of the Ladies Interclub Team. Stephanie Smith has been a member at the MAC for 15+ years and got involved with the Interclub team immediately after joining. She has twice been voted “Most Improved” on the team and has climbed the ranks steadily to become a force in the top half of the lineup. She can be found on the courts nearly every single weekday, and it is her determination to continually learn and improve that I admire and respect most about her. She’s a fierce competitor and accepts nothing less than bringing her absolute best every time she steps out on the court!

How long have you been playing tennis?

I began playing tennis as an adult. We were ex-pats for 10+ years, and I started up when we were living in Singapore.

How long have you been an MAC member? When we moved to St. Louis, we explored different area clubs, but eventually settled right in at the MAC. It was a great fit for my family, and I am so glad we did!

How long have you played on the Interclub team?

I got involved with Interclub tennis right away. With the different leagues available, it fits all skill levels as my game has progressed.

How often do you play at the MAC? What started as playing twice a week, 15 years later, has now turned into five days a week!

What is your favorite thing about Interclub?

I love playing Interclub because while it is competitive players from other clubs in the area, it is still Friday fun tennis! The environment is a little more relaxed, no pressure, and is usually followed up with lunch with teammates. Interclub tennis has been a great way to meet people, as well. Ladies who were previously my “tennis friends” have become my “good friends,” both on and off the court.

What do you love most about the game of tennis?

I love playing tennis, but it is also a great spectator sport! I’ve been to the US Open, Australian Open and the Charleston Open. My bucket list definitely includes seeing all four Majors in person!

DOWNTOWN DINING

Start Your Day in the 1903 Dining Room

Spring Sweets at the Downtown Clubhouse

The MAC Pastry Team wishes members a happy May! This month is one of the busiest for the Pastry Team with Mother’s Day celebrations and wedding season kicking off. After the success of the Easter Buffet downtown, Team Pastry is already planning the desserts for Mother’s Day. They have many ideas for splendid sweet treats, and with the addition of new bread displays, Chef Liz believes this will be one of the best buffets members have seen from the team.

Wedding season is both exciting and challenging. Bringing cakes to life from the brides’ imaginations takes time and talent, but Chef Katie is certainly up to the task. Weddings are also an opportunity for the Pastry Team’s teamwork to shine, as everyone has a hand in using their individual talents to create masterful cakes.

Also in May, the Pastry Team begins planning for the gingerbread display. A theme has been decided, and now the team commences with drawing out their design and brainstorming how to make their vision a reality. The MAC Engineering Department is a tremendous help with this part of the process, helping the Pastry Team discover what is possible and how to ensure the structure of the display is sound.

Overall, the Pastry Team will have the opportunity to demonstrate their incredible talents this month! Stay tuned for their confectionery creations around the Downtown Clubhouse.

The best from the 2023-24 season honored at the MAC

Some of the biggest stars in college basketball were shining bright in the Missouri Room at the USBWA College Basketball Awards. Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams headlined the banquet. In 2005, across the street from the MAC at the Dome, Williams won the first of his three national championships at North Carolina. When asked what his favorite cities are, Williams quipped, “St. Louis, Phoenix and Detroit,” the sites of his national championships.

Fresh off completeing an undefeated season capped off with a national championship, University of South Carolina head coach, Dawn Staley, was in attendanceto receive the Women’s Coach

of the Year Award. Kelvin Sampson, whose University of Houston team earned a number 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, was presented with the Men’s Coach of the Year Award.

Legendary UConn coach Geno

Auriemma, who has won a remarkable 11 national championships, was in attendance to receive a special recognition. The USBWA announced that upon Auriemma’s retirement, the Women’s Coach of the Year Award will be named in his honor.

University of Kentucky sharpshooter Reed Sheppard received the Freshman of the Year Award. The day after the banquet, Sheppard declared for the NBA Draft where

he is projected as a Top 5 pick. Scoring sensation JuJu Watkins from USC received the Women’s Freshman of the Year Award. In her first year in college, Watkins finished second only to Caitlin Clark in scoring.

KMOX Sports Director Tom Ackerman and ESPN Radio’s Michelle Smallmon co-hosted this year’s banquet. The event’s high-profile lineup of honorees attracted extensive local and national media coverage. The strong support of the membership and the sponsors made the event possible, and the MAC has quickly grown this event into another great annual sports banquet on the Club’s social calendar.
