from the president The Missouri Athletic Club differentiates itself from other private clubs in many ways. For example, the MAC has two clubhouses with distinctly different cultures and offerings that appeal to different members in different ways. The MAC has a long, rich history dating back to the 1904 Olympics and World’s Fair. The MAC has robust dining, social, athletic and fitness offerings, which are provided by expert professionals. Our Club has indoor and outdoor pools, golf offerings, a deep-rooted culture of camaraderie and fellowship, and the oldest singing group west of the Mississippi, which I will say more about later in this column. And, while the MAC is not the only club with foundations, I believe the genuine philanthropic nature of our membership sets us apart in a big way. The MAC’s third annual Foundations’ Month recently concluded with another successful golf tournament, presented for the second consecutive year by Mosby Building Arts. Thank you Mosby and Mark McClanahan for your continuous and generous support of the MAC and its three foundations. After expenses, the golf tournament generated more than $95,000, which is on top of the money donated by the 170 members of the All-Star Team who pledge monthly gifts to the foundations. If you are not a member of the All-Star Team and want to join by adding a charitable contribution to your monthly bill, please contact Cynthia Goudy. No donation is too small. Every dollar helps. Members also donated approximately $9,700 during Foundations’ Month by adding a gift on the green chits. These gifts have a long-lasting, positive impact on the Club and help ensure that the Club’s values of tradition, community, and culture continue for years to come. My deepest thanks goes out to all of you for your gifts and support. I would be remiss without extending an additional note of appreciation to the 15 members who are remembering the MAC in their estate plan. The MAC also recently received a $15,000 gift from an avid swimmer

at the downtown pool to fund a much-needed facelift project for the Downtown Clubhouse’s pool deck. To show the Club’s appreciation, the Cherry Diamond wanted to feature the gift in this issue, but the donor humbly declined the interview. Speaking of projects, there are several that are needed at the Downtown Clubhouse. If you are interested in learning about these projects and would consider making a charitable donation to fund them or to include something in your estate plan, please contact Wally Smith or me. While these gifts directly impact the MAC’s Sports Foundation, Foundation for the Arts, and Preservation Foundation, in addition to paying the Pace loan, they indirectly impact other areas of the Club. For example, charitable gifts to the Preservation Foundation help the MAC tackle renovation projects at the Downtown Clubhouse, which then free up other dollars in the capital budget for projects at the West Clubhouse such as the current fitness expansion and renovation project. I want to reiterate the Club’s capital budget is covering the estimated $530,000 cost of Phase One, which I predict will be completed prior to the end of this calendar year. The Club is looking at various alternatives as to how to pay for Phase Two, which is projected to cost around $2 million. None of the alternatives are an assessment. You can find another great example of the Club’s philanthropic spirit on page 29, which highlights the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children and events that support it. The CSC is an extension of the Sports Foundation, which every year identifies and donates to three local children’s charities. Over the past ten years, the CSC has given approximately $300,000 to charities devoted to children. This month, on October 27, two tennis events benefiting the CSC will be held at the West Clubhouse. Bob Barnes has organized the Silver Racquet Tennis Tournament for nine years, which recently has raised $2-4,000 annually for the CSC. He is retiring from leading the event and looking for a successor. In honor of his final

year, I encourage you to join me in supporting the Silver Racquet Tournament, which this year already has $10,000 in pledges. Show your support through a donation or by participating in the tournament or the Family Fun Tennis Day on October 27, a great event for all ages and skill levels. Thank you, Bob! Clearly, supporting the MAC’s foundations is not limited to just the month of August. The Foundations’ Gala is scheduled for Friday, February 8, 2019. In addition to hoping everyone will save the date, the Club is looking for auction items and sponsors. Similar to Mosby Building Arts’ presenting sponsorship of the Foundations’ Golf Tournament, the MAC has developed a great presenting sponsorship package for the Gala. Contact Cynthia Goudy, if you are interested. As I referenced earlier, I want to recognize another long-standing pillar of the MACthe Apollos. They are the oldest continually performing singing group west of the Mississippi River, and this year, they celebrate their 75th anniversary. Ironically, this summer, the Muny Opera celebrated its 100th anniversary. In honor of these anniversaries, the Apollos’ fall concert on Nov. 30 will showcase a collection of America’s greatest musical hits. Under the direction of Marc Strathman, past Governor Peter Dunne will produce the show. For the first time, the Apollos are now encouraging female members to join this CWC. For years, the Apollos have operated under an urban legend that their bylaws made this CWC exclusive to men. The bylaws are gender‐neutral, and the Apollos now hope that by sharing this information female members will actively participate in the upcoming fall concert and future events. The Apollos meet on Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Downtown Clubhouse for rehearsal and fellowship.

from the general manager One of the criteria that distinguishes the Missouri Athletic Club as a Platinum Club of America is our “caliber of staff and professional service levels.” The quantity of staff fluctuates with the seasons, but on average, the MAC employs approximately 300 staff. Our Human Resources Department works very hard to recruit not only highlyskilled staff, but also those who are hospitality and service-oriented by nature. Then, we strive to regularly recognize all our staff for going above and beyond. As I write this column, today, we recognized our Quarterly Distinguished Employee. This person is nominated by the Club’s managers for their attendance/ punctuality, personal appearance, attention to safety, positive and professional demeanor, elevation of department and Club standards, and quality of work. Each quarter, it is hard to select just one person from each clubhouse because there are so many employees who rate highly against this list of criteria.

On a regular basis, I like to recognize our Employee All-Stars. Outside of the Employee Cafeteria is a bulletin board dedicated to sharing the accolades I receive regarding great work done by our staff. It fills quickly. While these notes of praise are very visible to our staff, they’re behind the scenes for our members. Here are just a few excerpts that I thought were worth sharing: “Just want to say thank you to you and the GREAT staff over at West. They did an excellent job with service, and the meal was exceptional. We had a great time.” — Dack Ledbetter, President of Redbird Carriers

“Just wanted you to know that even though it was a short stay, my wife and I had a wonderful experience at your club. Your staff were very friendly. We really enjoyed your club and loved the room! Very relaxing and had a great night of sleep.” — Jon Lienemann, General Manager at Brookridge Golf and Fitness “What a fabulous Gala we had at the MAC! People are talking, and it is all good. I wanted to let you know as always, what a talented, kind, smart, understanding staff you have to have helped me pull this off. Each and every one of them have been such a pleasure to work with. I always know things will fall into place.” — Beth McAnallen, Event Coordinator/Communications at Grace Place Wellness Ministries

“I want to offer a sincere word of thanks to you and your incredible staff at the Downtown MAC for their remarkable service to our recently held meeting. Everyone was helpful and professional – as usual! Our primary server provided “spot-on” care to our group. He was extraordinarily courteous and efficient and made the meeting process seamless. Thanks again to all for making our gathering so easy and efficient. The MAC is the best!” — John Eckrich, Founder of Grace Place Wellness Ministries “We truly had the best night and received so many compliments from our guests [about] how fun and effortless the entire event was. I know a lot of that has to do with all the planning that goes in. I didn’t have to think about a single thing all night, and I know a lot of brides do not have that experience, so I am so grateful to you and the entire staff at the MAC! Thank you so much again for everything!” — Diane Monaco, bride

I just wanted to thank you for everything you did to make the wedding day so wonderful. Please extend my thanks to the entire team. You all are like a well-oiled machine and it is amazing to see everyone work together to make a seamless event… Your experience was certainly an asset to all of us planning the soiree and very much appreciated! — Allison McDonald, Owner and Lead Planner at Flourish Events The Missouri Athletic Club’s 2017-18 fiscal year concluded in August, and it was the best year in the Club’s financial history. The previous year, the Club set a record, and last year, we broke it by approximately $100,000! There are many factors that contribute to the Club’s success, and our hard-working staff is a big one. I’m looking forward to celebrating with them at our annual Employee Appreciation Event this weekend. Please join me in thanking them for all that they do to make the MAC among the top 5% of private clubs in the country.

PROPOSE FOR A PURPOSE!

When the Board of Governors approved the budget for the 2019 fiscal year, it included an increase in the initiation fee from $1,000 to $1,500 beginning Jan. 1, 2019. The increase will coincide with the completion of Phase One of the West Clubhouse’s fitness expansion and renovation project, which the MAC anticipates will contribute to membership growth. As the membership grows, the MAC will also come closer to reaching its 2,500-member cap. Encourage friends, family and coworkers to apply for membership this year before the initiation fee increases and the membership cap is reached. Invite a co-worker to expand their business network, a golf buddy or workout partner to share the athletic experience, or a child or grandchild to become a legacy member. Invite those closest to you to share the membership experience. To propose a new member, contact the Membership Department at 314-539-4438 or membership@mac-stl.org.

MAC MEMBER NAMED TOP 2018 BUSINESS WOMAN MAC member Catherine Taylor Yank was recently named one of the St. Louis Business Journal’s most influential business women of 2018. Catherine is currently the owner of Jim Taylor, Inc. (Taylor Roofing), having been in the industry since 1969. This dynamic CEO was named an Outstanding Woman in Construction by Arizona State University’s Department of Construction and the Greater Phoenix Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction. She was recognized by the American Society of Professional Estimators as the 1994 National Estimator of the Year, and as a Fellow Certified Professional Estimator, has completed several terms on the ASPE Board of Trustees. To this day, Catherine continues to guide the company along the path of excellence. Catherine joined the MAC in 2014 and has held small family gatherings at the Club as well as attended many Rotary events. When asked if she’s utilized the MAC for social purposes, Catherine answered with the affirmative. “I use the Club primarily for entertaining prior to Cardinals games — it’s very convenient! I belong to a wine group, just five couples, and we bring our own wine and enjoy the privacy of the small dining rooms as well as the wonderful food!” A few of Catherine’s favorite aspects of the Club include the

terrific food and the friendly and professional staff. She encourages professionals to join the Club and to utilize it for business prospects. “The Club is a perfect meeting spot with easy access parking,” she notes.

F OU N DAT IONS’ M ON T H

One for the Books BY CYNTHIA GOUDY, DIRECTOR OF FOUNDATIONS

In August, the Missouri Athletic Club celebrated Foundations’ Month, and it was an amazing month! Thank you to everyone who participated, from those who donated on a chit to those who played in the golf tournament. Here are some of August’s highlights: F Thank you for your donations on the chit recognition! We raised nearly $9,700! F The Foundations’ Golf Tournament resulted in a record- breaking net total of more than $95,000. Thank you to Mosby Building Arts for their presenting sponsorship in the golf tournament. I recently spoke with Mark McClanahan,

president of Mosby Building Arts, and his support of the Club is why our philanthropic efforts are so impactful. “Everyone benefits from having a purpose in life, especially through giving,” Mark noted. “And, supporting the MAC and its foundations allows me to be a part of something bigger than myself. It’s rewarding to participate with other members who feel the same way.” I also wanted to acknowledge some All-Star givers: F Carter Alexander F Jack Carey F David Wenzel F Jim Sheets Thank you to all our All-Star givers and planned giving legends. Your donation makes a difference at the Club!

A Hole-in-One for the Foundations Foundations’ Month culminated in the annual sold-out Foundations’ Golf Tournament that occurred on Aug. 27 at Glen Echo Country Club. Queens OF THE COURT

The Missouri Athletic Club’s junior tennis program has a reputation as one of the best in the area and has been proven to help players take their skills to the next level. Read further about the juniors who have participated in the program and are now key players on their high school varsity teams. Athletics is the MAC’s middle name so it’s no surprise that its junior tennis program is second to none in the region. The program is designed to promote a fun learning environment that helps youth grow as players and people. Based on the USTA’s Quick Start tennis model, which is a progression-based tennis plan for children as young as five, the clinics utilize smaller court dimensions, shorter rackets, and lower-bouncing tennis balls so youngsters can improve their strokes and sustain rallies more quickly. Tennis pros also play an enormous factor in the cultivation of skills and the improvement of character throughout all stages of development. This top-notch framework of instruction laid a successful foundation for the following young women who have elevated their sport to a new level in high school. These MAC players, some of whom received recent media attention, currently play on high school varsity teams and continue to be a fantastic testament to the Club’s outstanding programs.

Ever since making the MAC my primary training facility two years ago, not only have I made incredible strides as a player, but I also have formed very strong bonds with both coaches and players. One of the most important differentiating factors of the MAC is the positive atmosphere provided by all coaches in every clinic and lesson. Every time I step on the court, I know that I will not only improve at least one area of my game, but I will also laugh and smile. The experiences I have had at the MAC are unforgettable and I will be eternally grateful for the time spent.” — Ainsley Heidbreder

In her first high school season, Ainsley was part of the team that finished second in the state. She also captured the Missouri State High School Doubles Championship. Her record as a freshman was 46-3, including winning all but one of her 32 doubles matches. Stay Active

Fitness is often seen as a hardcore workout in the gym, but it is much more. Staying active in little ways is extremely beneficial to maintaining a healthy life. For those who are older, going for daily or weekly walks can greatly improve body strength and mobility. AT THE MAC: Attend water aerobics classes. Both the West (seasonal) and Downtown Clubhouses offer water aerobics classes a few mornings each week.

Eat the Rainbow

Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is important for all people, but as everyone ages, it becomes imperative to monitor a diet. Eat healthy to maintain a healthy weight, consume all the right nutrients, and most importantly, feel more energized. The body benefits from consuming the rights foods so eat the greens! AT THE MAC: The MAC offers various healthy options in all its restaurants such as the Spinach Berry Salad and the Impossible Nostalgia Burger in the Stan Musial Grille, and the Club-Inspired Woks at the Jack Buck Grille. The MAC also offers registered dietitians that can assist with setting up a healthy diet plan.

Protect Your Skin

As individuals age, the skin usually becomes thinner and more prone to bruises, cuts, and even skin cancer. Shield skin from the sun by covering it or applying sunscreen!

Visit the Doctor Regularly

Staying active and eating healthy are fantastic ways to balance one’s health, but seeing a doctor is also essential. Annual checkups are a great way to check in on the mind and body. Receiving doctors’ notes and professional opinions can help maintain a healthy lifestyle that will extend the youthful years! Also, diagnosing a problem early can help with treatment. Make an appointment for a checkup!

Hermann, Mo. is a wine festival town, right? On a picture-perfect day in September, the Forever Young Club learned so much more. Settled by Germans in the 1830s, that heritage remains in the plethora of finely constructed historic brick buildings and the still clearly visible German culture. A tractor-pulled tram tour of Dierberg’s German Heritage farm took the group back by way of an 1830s 200-acre hilly farmstead overlooking the Missouri River. A satisfying German lunch was served at Harvest Table restaurant before the group toured the old German Schoolhouse where classes were taught in both English and German until World War I. The Wursthaus, once a Main Street merchant’s shop, was the final destination where the sausage maker held a tasting of his nationally and internationally award-winning authentic German sausages. Join the FYC on Nov. 27 for a visit to the newly restored St. Louis Soldiers Memorial. Register online: Social > CWCs > Calendar.

With a focus on music, arts, and fine dining, Allegro is bringing a luxury boutique hotel concept to St. Louis seniors. The St. Louis area will soon have a unique new option, as locally owned Allegro Senior Living is currently taking reservations for its newest community. Located in Richmond Heights, Allegro has been designed with the look and feel of a luxury boutique hotel. “Residents shouldn’t have to compromise their lifestyle just because they need more help,” added Terri Matheis, Senior Living Advisor at Allegro. “Allegro feels like a high-end boutique hotel but our smaller size provides a real sense of attention to each resident.” Fine dining is also the new trend in senior living and Allegro is leading the way. Allegro’s first-rate dining program will emphasize fresh cuisine, unique and seasonal menu options, and nutritional ingredients that cater to the precise needs of seniors. First occupancy at Allegro is expected in mid-November 2018. The visitor center is open on the construction site at 1055 Bellevue Avenue in Richmond Heights. Visitors can connect with associates and future neighbors while exploring unit finishes and building amenities. For more information, please call 314-332-8372 or visit www.allegroliving.com.

MEET YOUNG LINCOLN While there are hundreds of books about Abraham Lincoln, St. Louis author Jan Jacobi has identified and corrected a salient omission. "Young Lincoln" is a biographical account of the president's formative years, bringing to life tensions, challenges and struggles as the adolescent Abraham grew older. For 27 years, Mr. Jacobi served as head of Lower School at St. Louis Country Day School and Head of Middle School at MICDS. He credits his enthusiasm for Lincoln to a seventh-grade field trip. Join the FYC for this informative program on Friday, Oct. 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the West Clubhouse.

EXPLORATION OF EGYPT’S SUNKEN CITIES Ask Forever Young Club members about their August guided tour of St. Louis Art Museum’s special exhibit, Sunken Cities: Egypt’s Lost Worlds. The ruins are in eighty feet of water about four miles off the coast near the Egyptian city named for Pharaoh Alexander the Great. Instead of pyramids and mummies, the exhibit contained more than 250 sculptures, earrings, ceremonial ladles, miniature boats and one of the oldest known astrological calendars. Also included were items on loan from museums in Cairo and Alexandria that have never been seen in America. Ninety-five percent of the ruins remain to be excavated. Though the group’s visit was exciting, no one volunteered to join the next dive into the Mediterranean to retrieve the remaining artifacts.

VETERANS DAY COMMEMORATION TO HONOR TWO INDIVIDUALS The annual Veterans Day Commemoration co-hosted by the MAC and the St. Louis Rotary Club will honor all veterans, but specifically these two veterans for their exceptional service. VETERAN OF YEAR, COLONEL JAMES P. CARROLL (RETIRED) More than 30 years ago, Col Carroll began as a young Army lieutenant, just off active duty, and eventually rose to the rank of a senior field grade officer. He was activated three times and deployed to different combat areas for more than five years. Today, Col Carroll is active within many military veteran organizations and belongs to the American Legion and VFW organization in his area. Before his retirement, Col Carroll was a member of AUSA (Association, United States Army) and ROA (Reserve Officer Association). He is president of the CBC board of directors and maintains an exceptional career with St. Louis-based Schaeffer Oil Company as its Executive Vice President of Operations.

VETERAN OF ACHIEVEMENT, SERGEANT MAJOR WALTER WRIGHT (RETIRED) SGM Wright enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1975 and served for seven years as an 11 Bravo infantryman. After reenlisting five times, he was promoted to Sergeant Major in 1995. He served in Germany, Korea, Kansas, and Texas. In 2015, SGM Wright assumed the duties of Senior JROTC instructor at Vashon High School as the program was facing dissolution. He set forth a four-year plan to revive the program and improve the cadets’ academic achievements. Because of his work, the JROTC program has drawn the attention of the St. Louis public school system, and the Vashon Unit was designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction, the highest award possible for a JROTC unit. This was Vashon’s first designation in 24 years and was the only inner-city school to receive such an honor.

SPEAKER SERIES AND EXPO EDUCATES ATTENDEES The MAC’s Business Development Group in conjunction with the Rotary Club of St. Louis hosted a second annual Speaker Series and Expo at the Downtown Clubhouse on Sept. 6. Various vendors exhibited in the Missouri Ballroom with intermittent speaker sessions featuring

Jeff Koziatek, Mary Kausch and Aprille Trupiano. These dynamic presenters talked about an array of topics such as women in the workplace, igniting productivity through personal authenticity, and harnessing the power of your talent. “Ms. Trupiano provided real-world advice to both men and

women in the audience on how to spend more time with family, play more and still make a huge impact in the workplace. She captured her audience and kept them there the entire presentation, which is a true testament to her connection with people,” said Najah Fennoy.

Silver Racquet Tennis Championship Play Tennis for a Good Cause The Silver Racquet Tennis Championship and the Missouri Athletic Club have formed a new partnership to raise money for the Charitable Society for Children and help recruit new members to join the Club. This event was originally started nine years ago by Bob Barnes as an opportunity for seniors to socialize, play tennis, and enjoy a competitive environment. Bob, who has spearheaded this event since its inception, will celebrate his final year as coordinator and pass the reigns. He has done a remarkable job supporting the CSC all these years, and he is excited to see how the event grows in the coming years. "The Silver Racquet Tennis Championships have created new dimensions for positive leadership in fundraising for children, social competitive tennis and the opportunity for retention and recruitment of new members for the Missouri Athletic

Club,” says Bob. “This is an additional supporting strategy for our continued success!” Previous MAC winners in this tournament include Donna Krutzman, Bill Bouchein, Don Franz, Mort Brown, and Eric Martin. Kent Brueggmann was the 2017 winner, and the event raised $3,000 through individual contributions. This year, the event already has approximately $10,000 in pledges. Attend this year’s championship on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m.-noon at the West Clubhouse. A breakfast buffet will be served starting at 8:30 a.m. All members are encouraged to attend and invite guests. This is event combines fundraising and member recruitment within a fun tennis atmosphere. Register online or call 314-539-4490.

get back into shape. Taking passengers with him for the ride, he enrolled his three daughters into tennis classes. It was a great ride too! Four out of five siblings still get on the court together with family and friends. As for our dad, he never tired of playing tennis, and we never tired of playing with him. We kids were able to share the court with him through his 84th birthday. We were so proud! Thanks Dad! KIM (CENTER) WITH HER SISTERS.

Family tennis can be a lifetime of fun and bonding! For my dad, it started when he was introduced to tennis at the age of 15. Inspired by the pastor's daughter in his small Indiana hometown, he and some of his classmates built a dirt court on the lot adjacent to the town's Presbyterian church. The year was 1936, and although it was a relatively short period in my parents’ lives, my dad knew from this experience with friends that he liked the game. Fast forward to 1965 past college, marriage, WWII, five kids, and work. My dad, after years away from the game, decided to pick up his racket again and

F A slice of lemon reminds us of their bitter fate, captured and missing in a foreign land. F A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears of the missing and their families–who long for answers after decades of uncertainty. F The lighted candle reflects hope for their return–alive or dead. F The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us and those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God. F The inverted glass symbolizes their inability to share a toast. F The chairs are empty because they are missing.
