As we charge into December, I would first like to wish all of you and your families a safe and joyous holiday season. Spend as much time as possible with loved ones.

There is nothing more rewarding than the investment in other people, particularly those you love the most.

This time of year always seems to sneak up on me, as crazy schedules between work and family never seem to balance. As my wife can attest, I am never quite prepared for this time of year. Well, the MAC is going to be extremely busy over the holiday season, and our staff is more than prepared to enhance your holiday experiences at the MAC. If you couldn’t join us on Thanksgiving, holiday dinners will be served on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Preluding those, Santa Claus is coming to the MAC on several occasions. He’ll be at the Downtown Clubhouse for breakfast on both the 12th and 19th and at the West Clubhouse for dinner on the 18th.

Holiday brunch will also be celebrated at the West Clubhouse on the 20th. Prior to that, the Polar Express will be showing at the West Clubhouse gymnasium on the 11th. If you’re looking to keep the kids entertained during the holidays, consider the holiday kid’s camps as outlined on page 20. Also, somewhat unique, we are offering a Drop & Shop on the first three Fridays of December. Young ones will enjoy activities and treats and give parents time to sneak away to handle some holi-

day shopping and/or gift-wrapping.

Stay connected to the club through social media. The MAC is sponsoring a Holiday Instagram Contest. Post a photo to the MAC Instagram account that best encapsulates the club’s holiday spirit for a chance to win a Pro Shop gift basket.

On that note, have you seen the selection at our respective Pro Shops? There’s a lot more gift options than just stocking stuffers. Also, don’t forget the gift of membership itself. This holiday season, consider an MAC membership for a family member, friend or co-worker. I have personally seen this done in the past, and it’s a gesture that overwhelms recipients.

If it’s possible to have a more anticipated visit than Santa Claus, then the MAC is sure to deliver. On Dec. 16, St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny will be at the MAC to accept our Sports Personality of the Year Award along with several other special guests and award recipients. Join us in welcoming and congratulating all of our honorees at this iconic event.

Not to be outdone, the MAC Hermann Trophy Awards springs upon us almost immediately after the holiday season on Jan. 8. In conjunction with this year’s FIFA World Cup Championship, the MAC is proud to introduce Shannon Boxx, midfielder from the U.S. Women’s National Team, as our featured speaker. Wow, what a lineup we have scheduled over the next six weeks. I hope you can be a part of it.

One other “event” that kicks off after the first of the year of is the MAC’s annual Weight Loss Challenge (page 23).

So don’t worry about the holiday season.

Feel free to overindulge and sandbag a few a pounds. The MAC has the remedy for you come 2016.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

Dear Members: I can’t help but be incredibly thankful for our members and staff who helped make the past year so fantastic. I want to take this opportunity for a quick look back and recognize just a few of those who played such integral roles in a big year.

From the get-go, the Board of Governor’s Class of 2015, led by President Dean Eggerding, embraced their roles and stepped up to pursue new opportunities like 1903 and the Set the Pace project.

President Eggerding was also a strong supporter of Governor Troy Robertson who led the 2015 Gala committee, and he owned the role of “Most Interesting Man at the MAC.” Now that was funny!

If you haven’t seen those videos, check them out on our MAC YouTube channel.

They’re still relevant as we begin to think about the upcoming 2016 Gala and the importance of our foundations. Last year, with the help of Katie Maurer, Governor Robertson and our Gala committee orchestrated the event of the year, and now are planning for 2016. Much of the Gala’s success is attributed to auction sponsors such as Chris Hyams, Ed Costigan, John and Sandy Irace, Jack and Ellen Carey, and many, many others who donated items to the cause. We auctioned off stays in Napa Valley and Captiva Island and a Beretta A400 shotgun to name a few. Our goal with the 2016 Gala is to be a friendraiser rather than strictly a fundraiser. We have some surprises in store for you and will also honor some very special MAC members and leaders. It will be fabulous.

Also, early last year, our Charitable Society for Children, led by Sam Hopmeier, presented three checks for $9,159.78 each to its three charities: Assistance League of St. Louis, Kids in the Middle, and Missouri KIDS. In its 10-year history from 2005-2014, the MAC’s CSC 6 F Cherry Diamond F DECEMBER 2015

has supported 30 charities by donating a whopping total of $204,414.16. The Charitable Society for Children is one of our community outreach programs, which falls under the Sports Foundation.

I look forward to seeing how we supported Coat-a-Kid, The Maren Fund, and Sweet Babies in 2015.

Moving into the spring of 2015, for the first time since 2001, the MAC was proud to host hundreds of private club members from across the country and from some of the finest clubs in the country for the annual three-day, seven-division NACAD basketball tournament. From sponsorships to receptions and parties, Gary Sextro along with Jeff Tuhro and Rick Schneider made this excellent event happen. The MAC shined so well and all were very impressed with the entire experience.

Shortly thereafter, we moved into golf season. I want to give a shout out to Governor Tim Powers who has been leading our golf program. He put together a great event to kickoff the season hosted by the legendary Jay Randolph, Sr. and helped pave the way for our annual Foundations’ Golf Tournament. A huge thanks to Mark Belew, John Bugh, Scott Engelbrecht and Rick Lodewyck for their involvement with this event since its inception and for this year’s record-breaking tournament, hosted

by Kim Tucci. This tournament supports our three foundations: Sports Foundation chaired by Greg Beekman; Foundation for the Arts chaired by Paul Weil; and Preservation Foundation chaired by Steve Krause. Our three chairmen are helping Cynthia Goudy, our new Director of Foundations, get acclimated to her new role and prepare for the 2016 Gala. We’ll keep you posted as things develop, but in the meantime, save Feb. 13, 2016 for the Gala, and call now if you would like to reserve a hotel room that night.

Following the Foundations’ Golf Tournament, in September and October, we prepared for the groundbreaking of the 1903 bar and patio addition to the West Clubhouse. We’ve got quite a team leading this project as we bring many people’s visions to life. Governors Tripp Zumwalt and Chris Hyams are overseeing the construction. Governor Duffy Dunn watches our finances, and Governor Troy Robertson leads our communication strategy. This month, look for video updates and a live stream of the construction site soon-to-be available online.

And, most recently, we honored our veterans at the annual Veterans Day Commemoration luncheon and parade.

There was a record-breaking crowd at this year’s luncheon as four-star General Frank J. Grass’ presentation really hit a nerve with all in attendance. Special thanks to Governor Tracy Beckette, Mel Burkart, Judith Hanses and Jim Sheets for their ongoing leadership, not only at this event, but with our Military History Club and so many other events such as our Veterans Day activities.

Now, as we move into December, it’s time to think about the holidays, and book your parties at the MAC if you haven’t already, but more importantly, my huge thanks to everyone for contributing to the Employee Holiday Fund. We’ve asked a lot of our membership this year, particularly in regards to the building of 1903. Your holiday gift means that much more to our staff members and their families who work everyday to provide you with the platinum level experience you deserve. Our staff looks forward to enjoying the holidays alongside our members from the holiday parties to the magnificent train display. Last year, our Board Class of 2015 took responsibility for our train display creation and operation. Conductor John Salter led the charge, and it’s now such a huge part of our holiday celebration.

Everyone stops to marvel, and it makes us all feel like kids again. Speaking of the kids, Governor Peter Dunne has stepped up as the jolly ole elf himself and is going to make sure all of our kids get the opportunity to tell Santa everything on their wish list. Don’t miss out on Breakfast with Santa or Family Night with this very special, homegrown Santa as he puts us on either the naughty or nice list. Thanks to everyone, members and staff, for making this time of year so much fun and for such a great year here at the awesome MAC. I’m looking forward to 2016 and another great year for the MAC and our members.

Greetings Cherry Diamond readers!

Tis the season for giving! In my short time at the Missouri Athletic Club, it is apparent that the members here are some of the most generous in St. Louis. Time, talent and treasure seem to be reoccurring themes and not just at Christmas time but year-round. I was flabbergasted at the dedication and spirit of the members. I look forward to meeting many more! One of my primary responsibilities is creating, building and messaging a planned-giving society here at the MAC. This society will recognize and honor members who have graciously written the Missouri Athletic Club into their estate plans.

One of the first members I had the pleasure of meeting at the club was Tom Albus. Kim Demotte introduced us over lunch. Both gentlemen have been leaders at the MAC through the Board of Governors. Upon meeting Mr. Albus, he expressed his emphatic dedication to the club and stated he and his wife would like to include a bequest for the benefit of the MAC in their estate plan. This makes him our inaugural member of the planned giving society.

Through several subsequent conversations, I asked him the following questions to understand his philanthropic intentions. I also hope others will follow in his footsteps as we begin this new initiative at the MAC. I want to thank Mr. Albus for being a pioneer in this endeavor and leading this charge.

It has been a pleasure seeing a glimpse into his generous spirit. I am enthused about the direction and the progress we have made in three short months and am energized about the opportunities ahead.

CG: What first attracted you to the MAC? TA: I visited the MAC with a childhood friend so I have associated it with success and St. Louis traditions since a young age. As soon as I graduated law school, I joined the MAC. The Downtown Clubhouse has been a big part of my life ever since.

CG: Being a past president, you had the privilege of seeing the impact of membership from many angles. What has been most impactful for you?

TA: I think, along with many women and men who have served on the Board of Governors, would agree that getting to know the staff of the club, all that they do and how long and hard they work for the members has had the greatest impact on me.

CG: Why do you think this planned giving initiative is imperative to the success of the MAC? TA: The MAC has survived and thrived for 113 years largely because of the dues and dollars of its members. Those numbers don’t accurately reflect the club’s balance sheet. There is a love and desire to preserve this club for future members and for our larger community that exists in the hearts of members, staff and supporters that exceeds dues. Planned giving is a way to capture that love and give it a voice and that is why my family is supporting the plannedgiving initiative.

Member Spotlight: Margaret Hvatum Margaret Hvatum, a 19-year member of the MAC, is known for her love of running marathons. She set a goal to complete 50 marathons in all 50 states during the month of December, and on Dec. 12, shortly before her 60th birthday, she hopes to complete her 50th race (dedicated to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) in Huntsville, Ala. in honor of friends and family members who lost their battles with the diseases. CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC? MH: My husband Kjeld and I have been members since 1996.

CD: Have you held any events at the club? If so, why did you choose the MAC? MH: We have celebrated birthdays at the Downtown and West Clubhouses. I have also held business lunches for United Way Women’s Leadership Society at the Downtown Clubhouse because it is so elegant, and the lunchtime fare includes a broad choice of salads as well as those decadent sweet rolls.

CD: How have you utilized the club since joining?

MH: We use the club to work out. I love to run to the West Clubhouse, lift weights and then run home, for a 14-mile round trip.

Kjeld enjoys working out on the treadmill.

I love the pool at West and have used it to train for a triathlon. I also like using the treadmill, but only if the weather is so impossible I can’t possibly run outside. If I have an injury that prevents me from running, I enjoy spinning classes or one of the other classes depending on where I am Margaret Hvatum proudly displays her medal injured. We also use the club for social after finishing the Maine Marathon. reasons. I love to visit the Downtown Clubhouse before or after baseball and (I still hope) football games downtown, as well as when I go downtown for special events like the July fourth festivities and holiday parades. When the weather outside is frightful, a chair at the Jack Buck Grille is delightful!

CD: Do you plan on joining any Clubs Within the Club?

MH: Once I finish my 50th marathon in my 50th state for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I will look into joining one.

CD: Have you brought any new members to the club? What advice would you give to fellow members in their recruitment efforts?

MH: Yes, I think the best way to recruit is to know what your friend or colleague is looking for (classes, swimming, indoor sports, golf, or social life) and then show them that side of the MAC. Cherry Diamond F DECEMBER 2015 F 9

A Strong Foundation Without its three foundations and their charitable donors, the Missouri Athletic Club would not be what it is today. The MAC extends a resounding “thank you” to the members who diligently support the foundations and encouraged others to do so. Below are some key events and projects that were made possible by the use of foundation funds.

Preserving a Legacy The Preservation Foundation focuses on preserving, rejuvenating and memorializing the history and historical architecture of the Downtown Clubhouse. This foundation is very important in making sure that the club continues to be a pillar in the St. Louis community as it has been for more than 100 years. Steve Krause, chairman, has played a key role in this foundation’s success, including: F Set the PACE St. Louis, started by Mayor Francis Slay, provides innovative financing solutions for organizations to upgrade their buildings. This $2.4 million comprehensive energy-efficient retrofit of the MAC will enhance management controls, upgrade the HVAC system and install higher efficiency lighting.

F To date, the Preservation Foundation has raised more than $1 million, which has been dedicated to preserving the Downtown Clubhouse.

F This year, fifteen hotel rooms were renovated using these funds. Thank you to Don Gunn, Gerry Ortbals, and Kim Tucci for their leadership in this endeavor.

Planning for the Future The MAC’s foundations play an integral role in the continued longevity of the club. They are the framework and foundation for maintaining the MAC’s heritage and place in the community. It is imperative to view these foundations as a necessity to the club’s success.

In the past year, funds from these foundations have been used in a myriad of great ways, and it is because of the many charitable donors that have made it all possible.

To kick off the next year of giving, the annual Foundations’ Gala will be held to celebrate all that has been accomplished while also focusing on the future. Please consider attending and becoming a donor to one or all of these three great foundations. Then see your donation come alive through their work.

Recognizing Athletic Achievements The Sports Foundation encourages and recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of athletics and selects individuals for public recognition. Thank you to Greg Beekman, chairman, for his tireless work. Through the mission of the Sports Foundation, the MAC has continued to reach the St. Louis community while making impactful contributions and increasing its presence. Here’s what the support of this foundation’s donors has enabled the club to do this past year: F Special Olympics – In June, the MAC had the privilege of helping two special Olympians fund their travels to Los Angeles for the Special Olympics Summer Games. The club presented a check for $3,500 to Eddie Watts and Allen Cameron during a press conference at the Downtown Clubhouse.

F Guns and Hoses – On Jan. 30, the annual Guns ‘N Hoses event was held at the Scottrade Center to benefit The Backstoppers, an organization providing support for families of police officers and firefighters. The Sports Foundation presented a check to The Backstoppers for $2,500.

F Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club – In Dec. 2014, funds were used to give the children of Mathew-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club sporting equipment during the holidays.

F Charitable Society for Children – In 2014, the CSC raised $27,479 which was evenly divided up between its three charities: Assistance League of St. Louis, Missouri Kids and Kids in the Middle.

F Community outreach has become a primary agenda for the Sports Foundation. It has impacted the following organizations: Legacies Alive, Special Needs Soccer Association, and City Arch River Restoration.

Maintaining the Arts The Foundation for the Arts assembles, commissions and maintains works of art in the MAC. Paul Weil, chairman, has used his talents in support of this foundation. With the help of donors, the Foundation for the Arts has been able to do some great work in the past year: F A member-favorite painting, Taxi Please by Emil J. Kosa, Jr. underwent a $4,000 restoration.

F Several other pieces of artwork have been restored using funds from the Foundation for the Arts.

FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS The mission of the Foundation for the Arts is to assemble, collect, commission, display and maintain significant works of the arts.

Greetings from the Kitchen of Executive Chef, Barton Philipps As I began writing my holiday letter to our club members, I started to reflect on everything that has happened this year and all of the great changes that will enhance the platinum club experience in 2016.

Let’s start with a great big hello and happy holidays from the MAC culinary staff. They wanted to ensure that their greeting found its way to you.

Earlier this spring, we participated in the St. Andrew’s Fourth Annual Derby Brunch Fundraiser at the Forest Park World’s Fair Pavilion. Also, the Chef’s Night Out at Westborough Country Club was a great time as usual and, on a side note, we will be hosting this event in our very own Missouri Ballroom next year. I invite everyone interested in seeing inspired creations from the best clubs and restaurants in St. Louis to plan on attending this event. The MAC was well represented at the St. Vincent Home cooking for kids’ fundraiser and, last but not least, we presented a pastry display at The St. Louis Chef’s de Cuisine fundraiser at Anheuser Busch for more than 400 people. We continue to keep the Missouri Athletic Club’s name well represented in our community.

This has been a great year for the culinary team. We brought aboard a new assistant pastry chef, Meaghan Coltrain, and a new baker, Patrick Herrmann. Both are great additions to the culinary team that keep our products top-notch in the pastry department.

As the trees become bare and the cold weather is here to stay, we know that Santa is on his way. So let’s get the turkey cooking for the Thanksgiving buffet and roast some prime rib for the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day menus. My team and I look forward to serving you this holiday season at one or more of these holiday events.

This summer a collection of former MAC Hermann Trophy winners and finalists helped the U.S. Women’s National Team capture the World Cup. On Jan. 8, meet soccer’s next group of rising stars at the MAC Hermann Trophy banquet.

Midfielder Shannon Boxx, who helped the USWNT win the Cup, will be the banquet’s featured speaker.

During her distinguished career, she had 195 caps with the National Team and won three Olympic gold medals.

Boxx showed great determination in realizing her World Cup dream. She was diagnosed with lupus in 2007, suffered a serious knee injury in 2013, and gave birth to her daughter Zoe last year. Following the World Cup victory, Boxx announced her retirement to spend more time with her family.

In 2015, Mike Matheny became the first manager in baseball history to guide his team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons (2012-15). Under his leadership, the Cardinals overcame numerous key injuries and posted the best record in baseball. Missouri Athletic Club members have selected Mike Matheny as the 2015 Sports Personality of the Year.

distinguished local sports figures, will be honored at the 46th annual Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet presented by Maryville University on Dec. 16. Dave Peacock, who is leading the St. Louis Stadium Task Force, will receive the Jack Buck Award. MAC Welcomes Brandon Bertsch Brandon Bertsch has been instructing and coaching tennis in various states for the past eight years. He grew up in Akron, Ohio and started playing tennis at the age of seven.

As a junior, Bertsch played in many tournaments all over the Midwest.

Bertsch is a USPTA level two certified professional. He taught and coached at many different clubs and academies in Ohio, Utah, and Missouri. He was a boy’s high school tennis coach for Skyline High School in Salt Lake City, Utah for three seasons. He led them to two district championships and was state runner-up one season. Bertsch is currently in his first year as assistant coach for Saint Louis University and is excited to be part of the MAC team.

MAC Hosts Inaugural SDA Doubles Open The weekend of Oct. 23-25 was full of excitement as the inaugural Missouri Athletic Club SDA Open took place at both clubhouses. Adam Bews, Director of Squash at the club, founded the $20,000 event. “Having played the tour and making friends with a lot of guys during my time in Greenwich, I wanted to expose my A Pro Am: Runners up Matt Jenson membership to top quality men’s doubles (pro) and Chris Shephard; Winners Mark and give them a fantastic experience,” Bews Gaertner and Carl Baglio (pro) said. “Members loved the event and many Not pictured: B Pro Am: Winners Jake seeing pro men’s doubles for the first time Shepley and Jordan Greenberg (pro); couldn’t believe what they were seeing. The team then entered the main draw playing against John Russell and Viktor Berg, but was defeated in the next three games.

In the end, Russell/Berg pulled out ahead and won the second SDA title of the season. Although Bews did not win, he was excited at how excellent everything turned out. “Things went great and all ran smoothly,” Bews said. “It was a unique experience for the pros being able to stay at the club at which they were playing.

They were all fantastic at mixing with the members and playing some great pro ams.

Thanks to all of them for making the trip!”

The Downtown Athletic Department will close at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 24 and be closed all day Friday, Dec. 25 due to the Christmas holiday.

It will reopen with regular hours on Saturday, Dec. 26.

The department will also be closed from Thursday, Dec. 31 at 6 p.m. through Friday, Jan. 1, 2016 due to the New Year’s holiday. It will reopen on Saturday, Jan. 2 with regular hours.

Winter Basketball League Registration Registration is now open, and the deadline is Dec. 11. All leagues begin Jan. 4. Two leagues will be offered at the Downtown Clubhouse. The men’s Open League takes place on Monday and Tuesday nights (this league plays games on both nights), and the men’s Over 40 League takes place on Wednesday nights. Register online.

Volleyball Clinics will be offered to the following age groups this season: F 10’s and 11’s Developmental F 15 and under F 14 and under (two teams) 10’s and 11’s Developmental Program Open registration is offered for the 10s and 11s developmental program. Players born on or after September 1, 2004 are eligible to participate in the program. The season will run from early January through late March.

The cost for the program is $200 for members and $250 for guests, which includes Gateway registration fees, the coaching staff’s Gateway registration and background screens, IMPACT training, coaching and tournament entry fees.

Participants will also receive a MAC volleyball t-shirt uniform to wear to practice and the end of the season tournament.

The tournament is a great opportunity for players to showcase their skills.

Weight Loss Challenge This year’s weight loss challenge begins Monday, Jan. 11 and continues until March 21! As opposed to previous years, this year’s challenge will include a team element, with participants being placed on teams and resulting in not only a first and second place individual winner at the end of the challenge but a winning team as well. Teams will consist of three to four people depending on the number of participants. All weight loss will be measured in percentage of weight lost, not total pounds lost.

After registration, participants can choose a free, one-hour nutrition consultation, one-hour personal training session or a one-hour group training session. Participants also receive 10% off personal training, massage therapy or any other fitness offering scheduled during the duration of the challenge. Weekly weigh-ins will be administered and a body fat composition taken. Challenge participants can also receive a $20 discount on metabolic assessments. Discounts are available for group training if you want to work out with your teammates!

A Boo-tiful Night for

Trunk’R Treat On Sunday, Oct. 25, ghouls and goblins, princesses and superheroes gathered for a fun-filled evening at the West Clubhouse for Trunk-R-Treat.

The weather was perfect, and the parking lot was transformed into a Halloween extravaganza.

Bouncy houses and slides added extra fun to the evening while s’mores and bonfires warmed things up.

The FYC Visits Tower Grove Park and Brightside St. Louis On a beautiful fall day in October, members of the Forever Young Club boarded the MAC shuttle and were off for another exciting adventure. The group’s first stop on the tour was historic Tower Grove Park. Susan, the group’s docent, shared her passion and in-depth knowledge of the park.

Henry Shaw’s vision for the park is still apparent today showcasing the unusual and attractive Victorian-era structures and landscaping. After visiting the stables and meeting the resident Clydesdale, Jimmy Joe, the group enjoyed a catered lunch by Butler’s Pantry in the Piper Palm House. Mr. Bob Sellers, president of the park’s Board of Commissioners and Mr. Bill Reininger, Tower Grove Park’s new director, each described their role as custodians of the park and their

responsibility to maintain Henry Shaw’s vision.

The next stop on the tour was Brightside St. Louis’ Demonstration Garden where Executive Director, Mary Lou Green, warmly greeted the group. For many, it was their first visit to the garden. Some remembered the southeast corner of Kingshighway and Vandeventer as a gas station and later as a rock-filled lot that sat barren for more than two decades.

Today, a once-blighted street corner is now a community asset and destination that features beautiful Missouri native plants and trees.

To conclude the tour, the group stopped at Tower Grove Creamery for ice cream.

Apollos Fall Concert an Exquisite Evening On Friday, Nov. 6, the Apollos partnered with the Dance Club to present a lively program featuring songs from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘80s. Mingled between vocal performances were dance showcases performed to the Ambassadors of Swing by Dance Club chair Jim Sheets and MAC staff Emma Frey and MAC members Roy and Renate Gray. The evening concluded with open dancing time.

On Thursday, Nov. 5, the MAC held its annual Veterans Day Commemoration at the Downtown Clubhouse.

Hundreds of people gathered to honor those who had served the country, especially those from World War II and the Fall of General Frank J. Grass Saigon. Cecil Ray Brandenburgh, a World War II veteran from the Army National Guard and Jack Poitras, a Vietnam veteran from the U.S. Army, were both highlighted. General Frank J. Grass, Chief of the National Guard Bureau and member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was the keynote speaker at the event.

MAC in the Community: Recyclables for Rescues On Nov. 3, four students from the Lego League Robotics six-person team, Odyssey 2.0, visited the Downtown Clubhouse and gave a presentation in front of Missouri Athletic Club staff and General Manager, Wally Smith. As part of their robotics challenge, the kids, ranging from third to fifth grade, needed to create an influential program so they created Recyclables for Rescues, a program that collects old hotel linens and donates them to animal shelters. The MAC and Stray Rescue of St. Louis are partnering with this program to ensure its success. The Missouri Athletic Club Nominating Committee is currently seeking ten qualified candidates to run for the 2016 Board of Governors. Serving on the Board is an honor and provides a rewarding opportunity to give back to the Club while connecting with fellow members and club management.

Letters of intent are due on or before March 1 and nomination packets complete with a photo and biography are due no later than 5 p.m. on March 7. After receiving all applications, the Nominating Committee will narrow their field of candidates down to ten.

The club election takes place on May 5, 2016, and the top five candidates (as voted on by the membership) will serve a three-year term on the board.

Artist of the Month Deborah Williams

Deborah Williams is a professional artist who prefers to work outdoors, “en plein air,” capturing landscapes on location in natural light. Her art reflects a love for travel, architecture and landscapes. Her images are reminders of the fast-paced, disappearing world around us. Williams’ medium of choice is soft pastels but she also works in acrylics, mixed media and photography.

Williams’ photographs and paintings are included in numerous private collections and her photography has been sold in Hallmark stores. The artist has won many awards at plein air events in Augusta, Mo. wine country, Kansas City, Mo. and Door County, Wis. Her art has also been featured on wine labels.

Williams was born in Shreveport, La. but has lived in many states and the country of Bermuda with her Air Force family. She is a graduate of Saint Louis University and is a founding member of the Gateway Pastel Artists Door County by Deborah williams and the Gateway Gallery in St. Louis, Mo. (2004-2013). As a member of the Gateway East Artist Guild, Williams frequently paints with the Missouri Plein Air Painters Association. She currently resides in Millstadt, Ill. The [Rubik’s Cube] Face of a Sports Hero Connor Wright, son of MAC members Clinton and Margaret Wright, had the chance to meet Stan Musial at the West Clubhouse when he was eight years old. To honor the sports hero, the St. Louis Priory School senior used his brilliant creativity to construct a mural of Musial using only Rubik’s Cubes – 5,980 Rubik’s Cubes to be precise. The Cherry Diamond interviewed Wright and got the inside angle.

CD: What are some of your memories of meeting Stan Musial at the West Clubhouse?

CW: The very first time I met him was when I was eight years old, and I was sitting with my family at the table next to his. We were celebrating my dad’s birthday.

After we finished dinner and ate some birthday cake, we had about half a cake left so I wanted to send the rest over to his table. He graciously accepted and afterwards Stan actually came over to our table and played my dad “Happy Birthday” on his harmonica, and he made my mom a ring out of a one-dollar bill and signed it.

He also gave me 80 signed baseball cards to give out to my entire grade at school. It was the most incredible experience ever.

Since then, I ran into him a few more times, and he always remembered me.

CD: How did you come up with the idea of making a mural of Stan Musial? And why did you choose Rubik’s Cubes?

CW: One night I was sitting in my room playing with a Rubik’s Cube that I hadn’t touched in six years, and I figured out that if I had a ton of them I could create a mural with them. I Googled ideas and found an artist who had designed a mural using Rubik’s Cubes so I reached out to him to 30 F Cherry Diamond F DECEMBER 2015

see how he did it. His mural consisted of faces, so that’s when I decided to create a mural of Stan because he’s always been an inspiration.

CD: How long did it take you to create your masterpiece?

CW: The entire process took about 400-500 hours. The design itself took about 100-150 hours because I made 21 different drafts. I had a blank Photoshop template on my computer and then imported black and white images. I then had to change each pixel – about 54,000 of them – to either white, green, red, yellow, blue or orange. Then I spent some time on fundraising as well as 200 hours on twisting the cubes.

CD: Did you present your mural to Ballpark Village or did they offer to display it for you?

CW: In May, I sent an email to the president of the Cardinals letting him know my idea. I was able to convince him during a 10-minute phone call. He then took me to a spot in Ballpark Village and told me it was all mine to use.

CD: Lastly, if you had 60 seconds to describe the kind of man that Stan was, what would you say? How did he have an impact on you?

CW: What’s so special about Stan is how humble and down-to-earth he was. For a player as unbelievably talented as he was, he still remained true to his city and to his fans unlike some players of his day, and he made sure to try to have an individual and personal relationship with every single person in St. Louis. He really felt like another citizen of St. Louis by helping out and giving back to his city. So that’s why I wanted to honor him by making sure his legacy lives on.
