from the president Since 1903, the Missouri Athletic Club's mission has been to be the premier athletic, dining, and social club for business, professional, and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis region. Our tradition is based on the 116 years of past boards that have set the direction of who we are and what we need to be. Tradition is our foundation but can also be our Achilles heel. We need to grow, embrace what made us who we are, and be cognizant of change that only makes us better. I am honored to be the 104th President of the Missouri Athletic Club. But, I am just one member out of 2,400 peers. I am blessed to be with an outstanding Board of Governors that are focused on continuing to enhance the Members’ Value Proposition. The MAC is a Platinum Club of America because of the tremendous staff that makes our facilities first class. The Club is having another outstanding year financially and socially. Our pledge is to continue to build on our success and leave the next Board with a better experience for them to enhance. History is the club. You will notice on the following page an article from past president Gerry Ortbals from June of 2002. The President’s name has changed, the years have flown by, but it is interesting to see the message is basically the same: control cost, focus on members, and communications. Control expenses and debt. As we continue to invest in the Club to provide the first-rate facilities the members have asked for, we need to do this within our budget. Phase 2 at the West Clubhouse, the Trulaske Project, and the Jack Buck Grille make-over are just a few projects on the radar for this year. The initial reviews of these projects have

been discussed. The work will not begin until the board approves these projects based on reviewing final cost, financing options, project plan, and completion dates. These projects need to be in our 10-year plan and paid for with a fiscally responsive approach. Member retention. The Missouri Athletic Club is an iconic name in the region. Over the past six years membership has done a phenomenal job of having new faces join our Club. Each one of you decided to be part of the MAC. Both the Club and you need to make sure you are getting the Member Value Proposition you expected and desire. Each month you affirm your commitment by paying your bill. Our goal is to exceed the MAC’s mission statement. By doing this we need you to continue to use the Club for your primary social, dining, and athletic needs. Communications. In June of 2002, Past President Ortbals elegantly stated what the Board member owes you in the form of communications. The need for open communication has not changed. This is the member’s Club and the members have the right to know what our views are as their representatives. How the message is delivered has changed dramatically since June of 2002. As we move into the next year the use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Clubessential, e-mail along with the Cherry Diamond will be blended into a unified message using the different communication platforms. And for some, the old telephone line is still in existence. I can be reached at 314.422.0400. My phone is always available to receive a call. Service. The Governors and the associated committee members that make up the governing body for the members are

committed to our success. No one is paid to commit their time and talent. All of us do this for our commitment to each other and the historical importance of the MAC in the St. Louis community. I am asking each member to commit your efforts to the Club in the coming year. You may want to be part of a committee, provide help for any of the over 170 events we host a year, or make the Club your first destination for dinner, drinks, or a work out. Finally, thank you to the outgoing senior class lead by Past President Phoenix. Thank you to Matt Morris, David Smith, Andrew Carter, and Aaron Pawlitz. Your leadership has allowed the Club to continue to be Platinum. Congratulations to the new class of Governors that will join the board for the upcoming year: Angie Minges, Matt Gross, Aaron Pawlitz, Julie Ahlring, and Duke Niedringhaus. Please note that as we grow, and tradition is enhanced, this is the first time in the history of the Club that we have three women on the board at the same time. Inclusion is the foundation of the Club going forward. You will see in each Cherry Diamond I will be honoring the past by having a Past President as a guest at the Board Meeting and having his article published for that month next to mine. The Missouri Athletic Club is its members. Thank you for your support and commitment to the Club.

from the general manager This month, we’ll recognize many long-time supporters of the Club at the annual 50-Year Member Dinner, which is one of my favorite events of the year. These members have seen the MAC evolve many times over. Things like new facilities and amenities will come and go, but the Club’s great traditions and culture of camaraderie remain steadfast. These members are a prime example of the MAC’s roots in the St. Louis community. We are fortunate to have them engaged and mainstays of our Club for so long. Please take a minute to acknowledge them by reading the list of names on page 11. Speaking of long-term members, I want to acknowledge Past Presidents Don Gunn, Gerry Ortbals and the late Kim Tucci for taking the initiative years ago to establish the Preservation Foundation. Thanks to their efforts, more than a million dollars has been given to the Club in charitable gifts, which has allowed us to complete significant projects. While monetary gifts to the foundations are a great thing for the Club, they wouldn’t be as effective without great leaders such as these gentlemen. As a personal aside, Kim Tucci was one of my heroes. I was fortunate to get to know him well. He was a huge supporter of the Club and will be greatly missed by myself and many others. Recently, the Preservation Foundation was awarded a $200,000 grant by the Trulaske

Foundation. The Trulaske Foundation’s grant will only cover a portion of the cost to complete much-needed exterior work to the Downtown Clubhouse. We are working on a match campaign for the Preservation Foundation to fund the remaining cost. As this comes together, you’ll hear more about it from me and your Governors leading this effort. As I have mentioned, upcoming capital improvement projects to our facilities include Phase Two of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project and the Jack Buck Grille refresh. We are currently working on the budgets and programming for Phase Two by refining drawings and discussing timing and pricing. Once the budget for this project is approved for the 2020 fiscal year, which begins in September, then we hope construction work will begin shortly thereafter. The Jack Buck Grille refresh is on a similar timeline. Some projects take years of planning. Others are unexpectedly addressed when an immediate need arises. For example, we planned to refinish the basketball court at the Downtown Clubhouse a year or two from now. Unfortunately, a shower in one of our hotel rooms sprung a leak that seeped onto the court over a weekend, permanently damaging the floor. Thanks to quick thinking and action by our Assistant Athletic Director,

Rick Schneider and his staff, we contacted insurance, secured bids, and refinished the floor in a matter of 30 days — with no disruption to the impending summer basketball league schedule. Not only is the floor beautifully refinished, but the ceiling has been repaired and secured as well to prevent a problem like this from taking place again. Whether a long-term or a short-term project, it’s rewarding to see members and staff collaborate to bring these projects to fruition. Our Club is great because of its people, and I am excited to see how it continues to evolve over the next year and into the future. During the May Board of Governors meeting, the new class of Governors was inducted onto the Board. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Julie Ahrling, Matthew Gross, Angie Minges, Duke Niedringhaus and Aaron Pawlitz. These new (and one returning) leaders are volunteering their time, talent and resources, and bringing fresh eyes and ideas to the position. I am confident they will follow in the steps of their predecessors and ensure the Club stays on a good path.

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

A NIGHT

Fit for a Princess

The iconic Father-Daughter Banquet dates back to the early years of the MAC and has remained a favorite event since then. On Wednesday, May 15, fathers and grandfathers traded their baseball and hockey jerseys for suits to escort their daughters and granddaughters to a fairytale evening at

the annual Father-Daughter Banquet at the Downtown Clubhouse. The magic began on a fun note with horse-drawn carriage rides around downtown along with a cocktails and

kiddie cocktails, photographs and balloon art while children’s movies played in the Art Lounge. Afterwards, dinner and dancing rounded out an enchanting night.

AN EGG-CELLENT

Easter

W E E K E N D The weather could not have been better for the 2019 Easter Egg Hunt at the West Clubhouse on Saturday, April 20. Hundreds of colorful eggs were sprinkled across the lawn waiting for kids to collect. As the clock struck 10 a.m., the scene became a blur of pastels as kids raced to pack as many eggs into their baskets as possible. At the end of the event, attendees left with both their bellies and baskets filled. On Sunday, April 21, the West and Downtown Clubhouses celebrated Easter in true MAC-style with a special brunch for members. Guests enjoyed an abundance of colorful and delicious fare along with a petting zoo featuring sheep, ducks, a donkey, a cow and more at the Downtown Clubhouse. The Easter Bunny also made an appearance for photo opportunities.

AMACHOL E-I NONE PROGR A M Members Enjoy Full Membership Benefits at Glen Echo Country Club Golf season is well underway, and these members certainly know how to make the most of it. Through the Glen Echo Full Membership Program, which began last spring, MAC members can enjoy full membership benefits at Glen Echo Country Club for only $295 per month plus tax. This partnership essentially gives these members three unique clubhouses to suit all of their and their family’s needs. MATT SCOGGINS As an avid golfer, Matt Scoggins was looking to join a country club on top of his MAC membership when he heard about the Glen Echo partnership. Living in the Central West End, Glen Echo Country Club is the closest private course for him to attend. This partnership has also made it easier to put together games for him and his friends at the MAC. “It’s like having a third clubhouse,” said Scoggins. “It used to be difficult to get everyone to agree on a place PHOTO: MATT SCOGGINS WITH NOAH to play. Now that many of us are part NOHREN PLAY A ROUND OF GOLF. of the Glen Echo Full Membership Program, it makes it easy since we have a place in common.” While he enjoys hitting the course and participating in tournaments, his wife enjoys going to their pool making it a “onestop shop” for them. BRETT BENYO Joining the Glen Echo Full Membership program was an easy decision for Brett Benyo, who says the Club is perfect for those looking to play a quick round of golf. 16 F Cherry Diamond F JUN 2019

“While it might take four hours to get in and play a round of golf at some places, it usually takes up to an hour/ hour and a half less time to play at Glen Echo,” said Benyo. Since joining, he has utilized both the golf course and the pool at Glen Echo. He is also excited about becoming more involved in group golf events this year, since he was unable to participate in the past due to PHOTO: BRETT BENYO ON THE COURSE. scheduling conflicts. “It is a great value for MAC members if they enjoy playing golf.” CARTER ALEXANDER There is something for everyone in Carter Alexander’s family at Glen Echo. While he is a part of the Men’s Golf Association at the Club, his wife also uses the facilities and his son is part of the Junior Golf Program there. Despite their separate activities, the family congregates for brunch on occasion. “I would recommend the program CARTER ALEXANDER GETS A HOLE-IN-ONE. because of the fantastic value,” said Alexander. “For around $300 a month, you can get access to a prestigious club.” Alexander also enjoys that Glen Echo is not far from his work downtown and the MAC’s Downtown Clubhouse. The location makes it easy to get in a round of golf in the morning or slip away during the work day.

CARL WINTERS The MAC’s partnerships with other local golf clubs is what drew Carl Winters and his wife to the MAC in the first place. When the Club announced the Full Membership Program with Glen Echo, he and his wife became members. “The program offered a chance to play one of the oldest private clubs in the area with less of a financial commitment than joining a separate country club.” The Winters try to play at least once or CARL WINTERS (SECOND FROM LEFT) AT twice a weekend at Glen Echo, and Carl also THE FOUNDATION’S GOLF TOURNAMENT plays with other MAC members there during AT GLEN ECHO COUNTRY CLUB. the week. “I recommend the program if you play golf with some regularity because it provides you with three club options under one financial package.”

MASTERS AT THE MAC On April 24, members and guests gathered in the Art Lounge to kick off the golf season with a reception and presentation from legendary sportscaster Jay Randolph, Sr., golf great Bob Goalby and baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. The panel, facilitated by Tom Ackerman, discussed the history of golf in the St. Louis area, the surprising comeback of Tiger Woods for the 2019 Masters Tournament and looked to the future of golf. They also provided information about Ozzie Smith’s foundation, PGA Reach, and his aspirations to reach at-risk youth, the military and their families and diverse populations by providing them with access to PGA Pros and the game of golf. The event culminated in a dual check presentation to Smith’s foundation from both the MAC and Glen Echo Country Club.

LOVE Never Goes Out of Style 2019 WEDDING TRENDS

CREATIVE CAKES While extravagant wedding cakes smothered in icing still hold a place in the hearts of many, other couples are choosing to go with only partiallyiced cakes making for a rustic look. According to Lee, “the rust and orange colors are also very much in use on cakes, cookies etc.”

Each couple has a unique relationship with unique thoughts and tastes, but every year certain wedding trends arise that show similarities between these couples. During the height of the 2019 wedding season, the MAC staff has experienced many different weddings. Here are some of the trends that they have noticed this season. TRADING IN TUXEDOS Although traditional tuxedos make for dapper grooms and groomsmen, several grooms and groomsmen have ditched the very formal ware for something a little less so. Many grooms THIS GROOM FORGOES THE have elected to wear TUX FOR A CLASSY ONE- suits instead for a more BUTTON BLAZER. PHOTO BY “laid-back design” said AMY KEEVE PHOTOGRAPHY. Catering Sales Manager Terri Lee. Some wedding parties have even experimented with other suit colors like tan and blue. BOHO BEAUTY For an aesthetically-pleasing wedding, many couples used to believe that everything had to look exactly the same. Lately, however, many weddings have embraced mixing and matching decorations, dresses and more. This bohemian trend of careful coordination without matching makes for a uniquely put-together, yet effortless look. HEADLINE PHOTO BY SUSIE VREELAND PHOTOGRAPHY.

THIS BRIDE CHOOSES TO WEAR STRAPS FOR HER BIG DAY WITH NATURAL MAKEUP. PHOTO BY AMY KEEVE PHOTOGRAPHY.

STRAPS ARE BACK A few years ago, all you saw were strapless gowns, but the staff have observed that trend may be changing. “I have noticed a lot of straps and other designs on the dresses versus the strapless,” said Lee. LESS IS MORE Like many parts of the wedding, a bride’s choice in makeup can be a great way to reflect her personal style. These days, many fashion-forward women embrace the natural look when it comes to their makeup on their wedding day. By choosing to wear less makeup, fresh-faced brides let their natural beauty shine with this minimalistic look.

PLANTING ROOTS Flowers will always have a place in weddings, however MAC staff have noted that the traditional floral décor is slowly being replaced. Many people are choosing to use other plants in their bouquets and table settings other than flowers, adding modern flair to their big days. Just get engaged? No matter your personal style, book the MAC’s Missouri Ballroom to add the perfect backdrop to your special day. Contact the Catering Department for more information at 314-539-4424 or visit the MAC’s website. Cherry Diamond F JUN 2019 F 19

Tennis Ball Machine Can Improve Singles Practice Besides improving strokes, the tennis ball machines are great for practicing singles and doubles shots. Think of the ball machine as an opponent who will have a number of shot selections based on where they are hitting from in the court. Here are some tips to get even greater benefits from using one of the MAC tennis ball machines. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Place the ball machine off-center, where an opponent might hit when making a shot. Have the ball machine direct shots where an opponent might hit based on their position on the court or even based on the particular tendencies of a known opponent. Use the ball machine to practice ground strokes, volleys and overheads. Do not stand still after each shot. Instead, practice recovering to a new position on the court. For practice purposes, base this on where you hit the shot or where the ball machine is set up. On each received ball, have a specific plan and purpose for the return. Aim for a direction and depth using the appropriate spin to send the ball back over the net.

RESERVE A BALL MACHINE

When booking a court online, in the “choose options” drop down menu next to the player’s name, check the box to reserve a ball machine for $10. The cost will be billed to the member’s account.

2019 MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament Recap The annual MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament concluded on Tuesday, April 23. The winner of the 2019 tournament was the team captained by Spencer Hippler. It beat the team captained by Andrew Schwartz 59-50 in the first game of the championship. In the second game, they beat them 33-30 to capture the championship. Team Hippler came out of the loser’s side of the bracket, which meant they had to win two games against Team Schwartz to win the tournament championship since team Schwartz came from the winner’s bracket. Luke Bumgarner (Team Hippler) was named Tournament MVP (for the second consecutive year) for his play throughout the tournament. Luke scored 21 points in the first game, 20 of his team’s 33 points in the second and finished the tournament with a 23.5 PPG (point per game) average, which also led all scorers in the entire tournament. Brett Benyo and Greg Lindsay tied for second with a 20.0 PPG average.

taste of membership. Throughout the week, members documented their participation in daily events with “bingo” cards. Those who got four stamps in a row received a coupon for a complimentary smoothie or glass of house wine and were entered to win the grand prize of a head-to-toe fitness outfit. The grand prize winner was Cathy Reeves, who participated in Weight Room 101 at the West Clubhouse, tennis and a post-workout power smoothie during the week. “My favorite activity of the week was playing tennis,” said Reeves. “Last year (I think during Women’s Wellness Week) I attended a beginner’s tennis clinic. I hadn’t played since I was a kid, but I had a great time. Recently, I started taking lessons. I’ve enjoyed re-learning the sport and meeting other members.”

Psoas Muscle

The psoas muscle is a deep-seated core muscle connecting the lumbar vertebrae to the femur. Symptoms of psoas involvement can include difficulties with hip flexion and posture, low back pain, hip/groin pain, higher incidence of quadriceps strain and difficulty rising from a seated position. As a chiropractor, I see this issue daily in my practice. There is usually an alignment issue in the lumbar spine pinching the nerve that supplies the psoas muscle. It may not be clear which came first, the tight psoas pulling the vertebra out of alignment or the pinched nerve causing the tight psoas. So, I treat both with a chiropractic adjustment and active release technique. Lying Psoas Stretch and Crescent Lunge (pictured below) are the two most effective stretches I give for at-home care. For more information on this article or to schedule a consultation, call Dr. Brenda Kingen today at 314-646-0013.

CATHY REEVES WITH HER DAUGHTERS Other members who won bingo include Ann Sudekum, Melissa Barreca, Jennifer Pawlitz and Christy DeJohn. “It was fantastic to see so many MAC women participate in Women's Wellness Week. I enjoyed seeing members carrying their bingo cards around the Club and hearing stories about how the week motivated ladies to try new classes and activities. This was the Women's Initiative Group's second annual event, and we are looking forward to building on new traditions of promoting and celebrating women's wellness at MAC!” said event co-chair Jennifer Pawlitz.
