LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy Birthday, America! Welcome to the heart of summertime. July 4th carries a profound sentimental significance for me, and I suspect for many of you as well. It’s not just a date on the calendar; it’s a celebration of freedom, unity, and the spirit of a nation. Beyond the fireworks and festivities, July 4th is a reminder of the sacrifices made by generations to secure and protect those freedoms. It’s about community and connection, a time for friends and families to come together, share stories, reflect on what it means to be part of something greater than ourselves and celebrate the endless possibilities that come with unity.

The MAC is a family unit. It’s a special place where people from different upbringings, educational backgrounds, professions, and even locations come together to share in fellowship and camaraderie. It is okay that we are not all from St. Louis and can’t name ALL the high schools here. The fact that you can is impressive and a respected tradition. As with any family, it doesn’t mean that we’ll always agree, but that we’ll respect each other’s opinions in healthy debate when we don’t.

So, let’s talk about the Clayton location opportunity. Okay, we’re not really going to talk about it here, but we WILL soon be talking about it. A task force of Past Presidents has been working diligently for over two years to analyze the opportunity of an MAC location in Clayton. The information they collected will help the collective us make a decision on the opportunity that presented itself when the St. Louis Club vacated the Pierre Laclede building space. We’ve solicited input from all of you as well because we know that opportunities like this require everyone’s input. The Board’s goal is to ensure that consideration of this opportunity is grounded in facts and data rather than emotion. It’s a testament to the thoughtful approach the MAC takes in considering significant opportunities and challenges.

Be on the lookout for additional information via the MAC mobile app. There is no doubt that such expansion provides growth opportunities and certainly the space’s offerings are meaningful – no doubt about it, that view is incredible. But it does come with cost, risk and impact. One thing we can’t lose sight of, growth can be accomplished in various ways, and we must be intentional about our decision-making to ensure we protect our Club for the long term.

Switching gears, our Club continues to experience unprecedented revenue! Pam will elaborate further, but with 2,613 members, we are up nearly $2.5MM in YTD revenue over last year. However, accompanying increases in expenses underscore the need for careful management to ensure sustained growth and prosperity.

I previously referenced the strategic pillars that will guide us as we drive purposeful growth. Beyond the Clayton location decision, we are thinking through additional opportunities. Through the past year’s diligent work of the Planning and Finance Committees (many thanks to Past Governors McLaughlin, McClanahan and their committees), we have kicked off a master planning effort to assess our West Clubhouse to determine how we can progress in growing there. We’ll embark on a similar effort for Downtown. Safety and security for both of our locations is top of mind for our Board, as is our focus on the MAC Brand and how we further engage in our communities

to drive positive impact. We are also excited about priorities to further the MAC being an employer of choice, including enhanced onboarding, leadership development education, and employee experience feedback.

Through all our endeavors, we will maintain a strong financial focus in which we follow the key principles of understanding that expenses are not bad, avoiding imprinting individual business experience on the Club, the importance of building net worth over time, the potential impact of net worth, and competing on value, not price.

In the meantime, you don’t have to look hard to see “better” around our Clubhouses! The enhancements, such as the Poolside Café, upgraded bar, and added poolside staff demonstrate a commitment to continually improving the member experience. Congratulations to the MAC teams that participated in the NACAD National Basketball Tournament hosted by the Detroit Athletic Club – a testament to the Club’s dedication to excellence in athletics. Read more on page 24.

We can plan all we want, but our amazing employees are the ones who bring the Board’s vision to life. I want to give a special thank you to Distinguished Employees, Communications Coordinator Caitlin Brenner and West Clubhouse Server Teresa Etter. Their hard work and dedication to the Club is invaluable, as are the many years of service these next two employees have exemplified. Tennis Pro Patrick McNally recently celebrated his 25th year of service at the MAC, and Housekeeping Manager Victoria Jenkins recently hit 27 years of service. Thank you for spending your career at the Club.

On a much more somber note, we lost a special long-time MAC employee, Virgil Tucker, who recently passed away. In life, you meet people who have the power to influence others for the greater good, and Virgil was one such person. He was a remarkable teacher, full of knowledge, and his presence made everyone around him better. He will be deeply missed.

So many good things are happening at our Club! It’s hard to communicate them all in one article. Stop me when you see me so I can tell you more! With Foundations Month (August) soon to be here, it’s a reminder to support local initiatives and organizations such as the Cardinals, St. Louis CITY SC, and the MAC itself, and to cherish the freedoms we enjoy and strive for further unity in our communities. Here’s to a joyful July and continued success for the MAC!

With gratitude,

CAITLIN BRENNER TERESA ETTER PATRICK MCNALLY VICTORIA JENKINS
VIRGIL TUCKER

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The team continues to diligently plan and deliver enhanced experiences at both clubhouses, and we appreciate your positive feedback and ideas. As always, please let us know how we are doing and how we can improve your MAC experience!

The summer begins with one of the MAC’s treasured traditions - our swim team. I thought some background would be interesting:

The MAC’s youth swimming program was started in 1922 by the Club’s renowned Athletic Director, Carl O. Bauer. On Saturday mornings, MAC kids learned how to swim in the Downtown pool. The program thrived into the 1990s. When the Club purchased the West Clubhouse in 1995, the youth swimming program moved to the West Clubhouse. The Club continued to offer youngsters swim lessons, but also started a Swim and Dive team to compete against other local swim clubs. Nearly 30 years later, the MAC Swim and Dive Team continues to thrive today. The program is bigger than ever with hundreds of MAC children of all ages and abilities developing their swimming skills. As we look to our future planning efforts, our swim team experience will continue to thrive and define the next 102 years of swimming!

The launch of our new MAC APP has been remarkable, and we continue to enhance the features as a result of your input. We have over 1,900 subscribers and encourage all members to download it if you have not done so (please refer to page 14 for details). An important note: Access to the West Clubhouse fitness entrance and lower-level pool entrance will be permanently locked and accessible via the mobile app scan code option, or by

prompting a staff member to allow for entry through a call box at each entrance. We anticipate this change taking place following the July 4th weekend.

This step to restricting access reflects continued efforts to elevate our security measures at each clubhouse. Both clubhouses will place an emphasis on heightened security awareness and protocols, focused on keeping your families and guests safe. Specific to the West Clubhouse, all members should take extra caution navigating through the parking lots by driving slowly and taking extra time to back out of parking spots. Remember — there are children everywhere, at all hours during the summer months. Your heightened awareness is appreciated!

The enhanced snack bar, known as the Poolside Café, at the West Clubhouse continues to receive wonderful reviews. Dinner service will begin in July, and we are preparing for an extended weekend of fun for the 4th! Also, improving the indoor dining areas adjacent to the kitchen is in the works. Our plan is to create a year-round offering for members to enjoy.

July marks my one-year anniversary at the MAC! Thank you for your gracious support. The team and I are energized by all that was accomplished over the past year, and we look forward to elevating the MAC experience at all levels!

Very best regards,

2024 3RD QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORT

May marked the conclusion of the third quarter for the Club’s 2024 fiscal year. Membership continued to grow robustly, driving consistent revenue growth.

In May, our membership reached 2,613, the highest since March 2010. Total revenue including dues, initiation fees, capital fees and operating revenue, amounted to nearly $22 million. This exceeded our plan by $632,000 and was $2.5 million higher than last year.

Year-to-date, the Club has shown strong performance in key areas:

F Dues Revenue: $8,085,000, surpassing our plan by $120,000 and exceeding last year by $735,000.

F Operating Revenue: $12,307,000, exceeding the budget by $562,000 and last year’s performance by $1,414,000, a 13%, increase.

F Overnight Rooms Revenue: Maintained at $925,000, consistent with last year.

F Downtown Food & Beverage: Achieved revenues of $4,995,000, surpassing the plan by $352,000 and last year by $655,000.

F West Food & Beverage: Earned $3,266,000, exceeding the plan by nearly $114,000 and last year by $422,000.

F West Pro Shop: Generated revenues of $522,000, surpassing the budget and last year by $63,000.

F Tennis Program: Achieved revenues of $846,000, ahead of the budget by $36,000 and last year by $103,000.

Other notable financial metrics include:

F Net Operating Cash Flow: $1,323,000 for the nine months, slightly below budget by $395,000, but ahead of last year by $253,000 (net income before depreciation).

F Line of Credit Balance: $525,000.

F Long-term Bank Debt: $7,512,000

F Capital Expenditures: $1,474,000

While experiencing unprecedented revenue growth, the Club has also faced rising costs, including employee wages, benefits, and food and beverage expenses. However, expenses are not inherently “bad.” Clubs are a high fixed-cost business – our footprint across two clubhouses and our renewed focus on providing a “better” experience for our members drives increased expenses. For example, we’ve added a second shuttle driver on game days for quicker service to/from Blues, St. Louis CITY SC and Cardinals games; new flowers and plants throughout both clubhouses; a new membership app; deep cleaning in our athletic facilities; renewed focus on facility appearance and upkeep; added staff in our food and beverage outlets; and additional security. All these amenities have a positive impact on the value your Club provides.

Looking ahead to fiscal year 2025, we are currently preparing our budget. With the budgeting process comes planning for new programs and capital upgrades, and believe me, the list is long! One key opportunity that governance and management have zeroed in on is the expansion of the West Clubhouse. As a result, the Club has launched a master planning effort to assess growth possibilities for that campus. You’ll be hearing much more about this exciting initiative in the near future.

There is a lot to look forward to in the year ahead –stay tuned!

If you have any questions regarding the Club’s finances, please contact the Club’s Chief Financial Officer Pam Roth at 314-539-4400 or proth@mac-stl.org

JULY ANSWER:

Frank B. Nuderscher, American (1880-1959)

Eads Bridge and Riverfront, 1954 | Oil on canvas | 36-3/4 x 65-1/4 inches

Signed lower left. | Missouri Athletic Club Art Collection, Commissioned 1954.

This large-scale composition celebrates the architectural and engineering masterpiece that is the Eads Bridge. The 1950s St. Louis skyline, including the MAC’s historic Downtown Clubhouse, is viewed from the Illinois riverbanks as a backdrop to the busy water activity on the great Mississippi. The artist, Frank Nuderscher, was a prominent Missouri landscape artist, and was commissioned to depict this grand scene in celebration of the Club renaming the second-floor dining space originally used as and called “The Breakfast Room.” In 1953, the Eads Bridge was just going on 80 years old, and the Missouri Athletic Club was in the Eads commemorative spirit when a contest was launched Club-wide to rename the second-floor Breakfast Room. MAC member Arnold Roth submitted his entry for this contest suggesting the room be renamed “The James B. Eads Room.” The formal opening took place on March 15, 1954, and with it came a new era of elegant dining at the Club. The new Eads Room was decorated with memorabilia including the large portrait of Capt. Eads which still hangs today. This painting by Nuderscher hung at the back for all to appreciate, and for many more years, members continued to enjoy breakfast in this room every day.

Have you seen this painting?

Hanging prominently where many members pass when enjoying special Club and holiday traditions. Its title, Memories, is a fitting reflection of time spent in the surrounding Club spaces.

MAC Member and Thermasi President Allen Coggins’ Arctic Expedition

Earlier this year, MAC member Allen Coggins participated in a groundbreaking business mission to Northern Canada. As President and Inventor of Cocoon Revolution by Thermasi, Coggins had the opportunity to introduce his company’s technology and solutions to key business groups involved in mining and remediation, renewable energy, and much more.

The purpose of the business mission was twofold: to invite select U.S. companies offering sought-after products and services to present their solutions to Indigenous communities in Northern Canada, and to facilitate networking and information sessions on doing business with these communities. Participating U.S. companies gained valuable insights into the cultural and economic realities of the region, enabling them to navigate this unique market.

Coggins expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to showcase Cocoon Revolution’s innovative Thermal Mass Furnace to Northern Canadian communities.

“Our mission at Cocoon Revolution is to provide affordable and highly efficient heating solutions to customers worldwide. We believe that our Thermal Mass Furnace has the potential to address the heating needs of Northern Canadian communities while also promoting energy efficiency and sustainability,” said Coggins.

While on his arctic retreat, Coggins witnessed the unique natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights. As he watched this amazing light show, he was humbled to know that the Cocoon Furnace has the potential to provide residents and visitors alike with the warmth and comfort they need to fully enjoy this breathtaking spectacle, even amidst the harshest cold climates.

MAC 50 -YEAR MEMBER DINNER

On Tuesday, June 18, the Downtown Clubhouse hosted the annual 50-Year Member Dinner to celebrate the Club’s exceptional milestone members. It was a splendid evening as Club leaders joined current and new inductees of the MAC’s 50-Year and 150 Club members.

To qualify for the MAC 150 Club, the sum of a member’s age

plus the number of years they have been a member must equal at least 150. This challenging feat is achieved only by the longesttenured members. MAC 150 Club members receive a symbolic coin, a tangible reminder of their commitment to the Club and its values. Meanwhile, 50-Year members receive a commemorative pin, symbolizing their long-lasting dedication to the MAC.

Thursday, Aug. 8 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

As the Book Club continues through the summer, Marie Salter will lead the July discussion of The Guncle by Steven Rowley.

Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they visit Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. When tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick’s brother suffers a health crisis, Patrick must take on the role of primary guardian. Patrick has no idea what to expect, having lost his great love, a stalled acting career, and having a lifestyle not suited to children. Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that sometimes being larger than life means you’re unfailingly human.

As summer hits the home stretch in August, Helen McGlynn will guide the Book Club through The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michelle Richardson.

The hardscrabble folks of the Appalachian town of Troublesome Creek must scrap for everything, except books. Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome has a traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy is a book woman and the last of her kind; her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project. To bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she must confront prejudice as old as the Appalachians and suspicion as deep as the holler. Inspired by the true, blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of courage, strength, and the belief that books can carry us anywhere — even back home.

NET GAINS: The Pickleball Revival at the MAC

Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the U.S., is experiencing a resurgence at the Missouri Athletic Club. Combining the best elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, this exhilarating racquet sport has won over players of all ages and skill levels.

Summer hours will take effect starting Monday, May 20. The Downtown Athletic Department reopen on Sundays in September following Labor Day.

Pickleball’s journey at the MAC began in the 1960’s with Jim McDonald, a future MAC Hall of Famer and avid racquet sports enthusiast. After discovering the game in Seattle, McDonald brought it back to the MAC, sparking interest among fellow racquetball and tennis players on the 5th floor. Although the sport faded from the Club for a while, its national revival has reintroduced pickleball to the MAC community with great enthusiasm.

SO WHY HAS PICKLEBALL BECOME SO POPULAR?

1. Easy to Learn: Pickleball’s straightforward rules and minimal equipment make it accessible to everyone, from kids to seniors.

Downtown Athletic Department reopen on Tuesday, May 28 regular hours.

2. Great Workout: It’s a fantastic way to boost cardiovascular health, improve agility, and burn calories without the intensity of more demanding sports.

3. Social Fun: Often played in doubles, pickleball is a social sport that fosters camaraderie and community connections.

4. Gentle on the Body: Its low-impact nature reduces injury risk, making it ideal for all age groups.

This summer, the MAC is offering a variety of pickleball activities, from open play to competitive leagues. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a curious newbie, there’s a place for you on the court.

Get involved by contacting Dave Fuhrig at dfuhrig@mac.stl.org or register via the Your MAC mobile app. Come see why pickleball is more than just a game and be part of this exciting tradition!

INTERCLUB INTERVIEW: Stephanie Lee’s Lifelong Tennis Passion is Alive at the MAC

Stephanie Lee is one of the newer additions to our Ladies Interclub team at the MAC but is certainly no stranger to top level tennis. From her first practice with our ladies, it was clear she had competed as a junior and would be a valuable asset to our roster. With her heavy topspin groundstrokes and willingness to crash the net, her offensive style of play has helped her win many Interclub matches with a variety of partners. On the court, her demeanor is that of a fierce competitor. However, off the court, she can be seen chatting and laughing with fellow teammates and even opponents. Her love for the game of tennis is palpable, and she has been a welcome addition to our Ladies Interclub Team!

How long have you been an MAC member?

My husband, Alex, and I joined in 2017, so about seven years now. How long have you played tennis?

I started playing tennis when I was four years old, so I have been playing for about 32 years. My whole family played, all my older siblings and even my parents. I played all throughout my high school and college years. I took a break from the sport

to have kids, and now I’m thrilled to be back out on the court!

What was the catalyst to get you started with tennis?

My parents got me started playing tennis. Since my whole family played, they introduced me to the sport at a very young age, and it stuck!

How long have you played on the Ladies Interclub Team?

I have been playing on the Interclub Team for two years now. I try to play as much as I can, but sometimes it can still be tricky to manage with two young kids.

What is your favorite thing about Interclub?

My favorite thing would have to be all the friends that I’ve made. It’s nice to play a sport you love and find others who love it as much as I do. It can even make tough practices enjoyable! The workouts and competitions each week are great, but I love being a part of a team and meeting so many wonderful women at the MAC.

Do you have a favorite tennis memory, either playing or spectating?

My favorite tennis memory is getting to meet John and Patrick McEnroe at the Dick Vitale Gala. My husband and I were invited through his work and made the trip down to Florida for the event. John and Patrick were honorees, and we had the

opportunity to meet and chat with them that evening. Such a memorable moment!

How often do you play at the Club during the week?

Ideally, I try to play one to two times per week, if I can. Having young kids requires some coordination with daycare and school schedules, but every chance I find, I am out on the court.

COACH MAGGIE’S NOTES

ON SUGAR FOUND IN FRUITS

My June article discussed natural sugar and added sugars. This month, my focus is on the natural sugars found in fruits. Fruits contain natural sugars, which include sucrose, fructose and glucose. Natural sugars provide a quick source of energy and are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber, making them a healthier sweet choice. Even though fruits are healthy, consuming them in large quantities can contribute to excess caloric intake due to their natural sugars. Be sure to consume fruit according to your plan.

NATURAL SUGARS

Sucrose, also known as table sugar, is a disaccharide made up of glucose and fructose. When consuming sucrose from whole foods like fruits, you also ingest fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Fructose provides a quick source of energy. The body breaks down fructose when consuming fruit, which is absorbed into the bloodstream. The liver then converts fructose into glucose, which the body uses for energy. While fructose is a type of sugar, the total sugar content in fruits is more relevant for weight loss than fructose. Glucose is directly absorbed into the bloodstream during digestion, quickly elevating blood sugar levels. The body

must use insulin, a hormone that regulates blood glucose. However, the impact of fruit on blood sugar can vary depending on the kind of fruit and the amount of sugar and fiber it contains.

For those managing blood sugar levels for conditions like diabetes, it’s important to monitor fruit intake. Choose fruits with a lower glycemic index and higher fiber content. Pairing fruit with protein or healthy fats can also help moderate blood sugar spikes.

Try keeping fruit separate from other foods, especially on an empty stomach. The digestive system works very quickly, and our bodies use different enzymes to digest fruit. The sugars contained in fruit need time to be completely absorbed. When fruit is eaten alone, your stomach easily processes the nutrients, fiber and sugars it contains. This is the best way to reap the benefits found in fruits. When the body does not have enough time to digest fruit, it can sit in the stomach, rot and ferment in the gut. Aim to consume fruit about 30 minutes to an hour before a meal, or two hours after.

This does not apply to everyone; for those who are diabetic, it is beneficial to add fruit to your meals. I recommend berries! My personal favorite is grapefruit because of

its unique chemical properties that reduce insulin levels and help with weight loss. (Please check with your doctor if you take blood pressure or cholesterol medication).

TYPES OF FRUIT TO CONSUME FOR WEIGHT LOSS

Choose fruits with low to medium levels of sugar. It’s best to consume fruits with high sugar content earlier in the day. The amount of sugar considered high in fruit can vary, but fruits with more than 15 grams of sugar are considered to have high sugar content. Sugar content depends on the amount and size of the fruit.

Low sugar content: apricots (fresh), blueberries, cranberries, kiwi, lemon, lime, rhubarb, raspberries and strawberries. Medium sugar content: cantaloupe (1 cup), grapefruit, guava, honeydew melons, nectarines, papaya, peaches and watermelon (1 cup).

Medium-high sugar content: cherries, oranges, plums, pears and pineapples

High sugar content: large apples, bananas, dried fruits, figs, grapes, mangoes, pomegranates and tangerines.

GET CARE FASTER

Did you know that you may not need a prescription for physical therapy?

It’s called direct access, and it empowers you to be your own health care advocate. You may be able to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s prescription.*

This means you can start treatment more quickly to restore your strength, regain your skills and reduce any pain. Depending upon the diagnosis, your therapist at SSM Health Physical Therapy may recommend that you follow up with a physician or other licensed health care professional before beginning your treatment.

Getting therapy first may help you:

• Save time

• Save money

• Expedite treatment

• Avoid opioids

• Prevent surgery

If your physician does prescribe physical therapy, you are not obligated to receive physical therapy in any specific facility. You have the right to choose where you want to go.

When choosing the right physical therapy provider, SSM Health Physical Therapy offers:

• Therapists who are licensed by the state and many hold advanced certifications.

• Participation with most insurance plans, which may help to minimize any out-ofpocket expenses.

• Submission of claims to your insurance company and help estimating any personal financial responsibilities.

• Examples of comments our patients provided so that you may learn more about their experiences with our care.

• Accreditation by the Joint Commission, which ensures the highest level of quality and patient safety.

Remember:

You are the most important member of your health care team and are free to choose the rehabilitation provider that can best help you meet your goals.
