After a lifetime in design and a decade running Missouri, we’ve learnt a lot about how to define the future for brands, so in this issue we’re looking forward - sharing insights, intuitions and insider knowledge that will help show your brands how to show up.

Alcohol is no stranger to advertising restrictions, yet the changing tide of sentiment, including those aimed at traditional out of home across categories, are cause for concern when it comes to threat-casting the future of mass-communications and the everencroaching Dark Markets.

Whilst Sri Lanka, Russia, Turkey and Norway set precedent for total alcohol ad bans, nuanced and hyper-localised legislation is beginning to play out.

Scotland is due a public consortium for a full-space ban and Bristol (UK) successfully enforced an alcohol advertising ban on all council-owned media space in 2021.

Attention Economy

KEEPING IT CONTEXTUALLY RELEVANT WHERE IT MATTERS MOST Big ad campaigns of course have their place but understanding their limitations and abilities is key to efficient usage.

THE REACH VS. INTIMACY DICHOTOMY The nature of mass-broadcast comms is taking a simplified brand message to an incredibly wide audience. This same audience, in the UK at least, is bombarded by some 5000 ads per day. All of which, though increasingly, and perhaps alarmingly, better targeted are not necessarily on direct or even parallel paths to purchase.

PREACH TO THE CHOIR However, once consumers are within off and on-trade environments we know they are incredibly pliable to suggestion.

82% of buying decisions, in the context of FMCG shopping are made at the point of purchase.

They undoubtedly have an interest in the category, and by virtue of their presence in retailers, are consenting to being interacted with. We’re talking to those sitting in the pews as opposed to shouting outside the church hoping they come in.

Lost in Translation WHY STARTING WITH A BIG IDEA HELPS YOUR BRAND WIN THROUGH-THE-LINE

Missouri collaborated with Beefeater to design dynamic and static QR Codes, print materials, and a compelling CTA for guerrilla marketing.

ATL campaigns frequently have other strategic agendas, seasonal comms and specific marketing targets that are not relevant across all off-and on-trade space or do not cater to its nuance and strengths. With all the inevitable compromises that this involves,it dilutes the effectiveness of our BTL comms.

The brands that get it right are those that start with a core brand idea, with relevant teams round the table when this is being developed, collaborating to create a unified campaign and executions that unmistakably translate the essence of the brand.

This approach has the additional benefit of enabling the global brand team to present a unified, coherent strategic framework for all comms, including POP, helping markets to execute consistently, rather than doing their own thing.

If we want a unified brand and campaigns that are effective, we need collaborative thinking from inception.

Second Shot No and low alcohol’s next big wave

In the beginning there was Shloer, ironically named after the one thing it wouldn’t make you do. The thin line separating this luminous pink fizz and Vimto was its premise and promise as ‘the grown-up soft drink’.

Undoubtedly novel in the early oughts upon reflection it was ahead of its time. Now with a plethora of brands, new and old alike, competing to win the space-race of no and low alcohol alternatives, the category has begun its second wave.

Yet consumers that were once sobercurious became sober-conscious.

A growing health-awareness spanning the physical and mental alongside changing generational attitudes, have been compounded by a return to ‘normal life’, with lower tolerances for alcohol and it’s after effects.

And drinks brands, keen to win share, have kept pace.

A gargantuan 8.3 million UK households have made an offtrade purchase in the category in the last year, and its 19.8% category growth is a drop of what’s to come with the UK market expected to reach a value of €1.3 billion by 2025.

So, what’s new in this second wave,and why does it matter?

We’ve moved away from the simulacrum Poor imitations of spirits, beers and wines have been given their final salute. Iterative recipe improvements and big-name brands debuting the market have set a new benchmark in quality. Gordon’s 0.0 saw growth in the last year of 732.9% to £6.7m, as a case in point.

Working in tandem ground-breaking innovation is enabling less taste,destructive ways to remove alcohol from products and improving the like-for-like taste discrepancies.

ABV Technology sells and rents machines that removes alcohol from beer to craft breweries, meaning existing distillation processes don’t have to change, and the alcohol extracted can be re purposed for other uses. Accolade Wines (Hardys/Jam Shed) are privy to new tech that will allow wines to retain aromas and flavour profiles without needing extra sugar from alcohols.

As taste standards elevate, so will adoption and retention, expect to see bigger players enter the market, and stronger challengers emerge.

Beefeater Light responds to the rise in demand for lower-ABV spirit drinks, crafted in exactly the same way as the rest of the brand’s iconic portfolio.

The collective is thirsty for a new buzz CBD, adaptives, nootropics, and actives; once eyebrow raising are becoming widely accepted and a preferred choice for consumers looking for a buzz without the following burnout. Trip, which specialises in CBD drinks, launched this year in Sainsbury’s nationwide, whilst Kin Euphorics, whose ‘mood-defining drinks’ using funghi derived stress-slaying adaptogens, nootropics (cognition boosting supplements) and functional botanicals, was co-founded by none other than uber-model Bella Hadid.

Previously health food shop fodder, these beverages have made the move to mainstream, and there are new waters to be chartered still. Pioneered in part by Professor David Nutt,a former government drugs advisor, with 40 years of neuropsychopharmacology development, describes itself as the world’s first ‘functional alcohol’.

Consumers are looking for the buzz without the burnout.

Using botanicals to activate the brains GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) transmitters, the beverage claims to produce the feeling of relaxation and conviviality (read: tipsiness) equivalent to two drinks.

As innovation continues, legal landscapes shift and social acceptance reaches critical mass, it’s likely we’ll begin to see the super tankers of alcohol begin to swallow up inebriation-alternative companies, as well as produce their own offerings.

WHAT do we actually do?

In asking what do we actually do, we’re looking at a brand’s core offering and competencies, the skills and capabilities behind the brand, the niche and laterally applicable knowledge that can be channelled into innovative products.

If Dyson wanted to emulate another brand’s success, they might have set out to build a cleaning empire, making plays in the master-category that didn’t upset the ecosystem.

There’s no better illustration of this than Dyson. Their excursion from cleaning appliances into haircare takes their precision engineering to an area people are arguably less hesitant to drop large sums. More than three years after its launch, the Airwrap still had over 100,000 people on waitlists for their chance to buy, with four being sold every minute.

Yet in eschewing what their initial category might dictate and centering in on their fundamental offering of being champions of airflow, they unlocked space in new areas crying out for their ability to deliver the best engineering.

WHEN are we consumed?

Entering new categories isn’t always reliant on new products. It can be as simple as repackaging and finding new distribution channels to make the leap.

Faced with the pandemic-induced closure of hundreds of stores, Asian casual food restaurant itsu made a pivot from QSR on the move lunches to FMCG at home convenience food that would turn out to be an enormous success.

Itsu have created an expansive grocery arm, with the gyoza arguably its breakout star – recent campaigns declare it the UK’s most popular gyoza. Introducing world food for mass-consumption has proved far easier for an already well-established brand, despite not being founded in the grocery retail space.

Whilst the meals and products are at a slightly higher price-point than similar offerings in supermarkets, they’re still more affordable than much of what’s on offer at the high street outlets.

As consumers feel the effects of inflation, the brand benefits from a shift in purchase behaviour, with consumers eating out less and buying more premium products to enjoy at home.

Revenues at itsu grocery, which supplies the grocery, convenience, online and wholesale channels, increased 39% to 29.1M in the 53 weeks to the end of 2021.

WHO are we really?

This question requires brands to uncover and define existing perceptions to leverage them to their fullest extent.

From logistic realities to emotional and metaphysical associations, taking the strongest identity tenets and then applying them to new categories is fertile ground for innovation.

One example of this is Budweiser, ‘The King of Beers’, whose owner AB InBev in India asked the question ‘Where else might Budweiser’s kingdom reach?’.

In a global first for any beer brand, Budweiser is using its status as India’s number one beer brand, bringing beer’s energy and US craft to whiskey with Magnum Double Barrel.

With one in every two bottles of whiskey bought globally being purchased in India, and a younger generation only just beginning to explore the category, the opportunity for growth is exponential.

HOW are we consumed?

Acting as a mirror to the reality consumers truly experience communicates an understanding, kinship and even empathy.

Cathedral City’s foray into cheese toasties or Heinz’s concoction of bean-filled hash browns might not be category switches that last the test of time, but they successfully communicate that brands are in touch with real consumer behaviour whilst also nudging them to keep products in mind, even if they do replicate them at home from scratch.

WHERE do we play?

Nike as it stands has a significant stake in dictating where the cutting edge of culture lies, so putting huge investment into the next frontier of the digital world only makes sense.

Yet the meat megalodon has leveraged its skill in product development and 130 year heritage as a reliable and comforting tea-time staple, that has won instant supermarket shelf-space, and left the likes of numerous edgy vegan start-ups to fight with one another.

If asking the core plant-based consumer whether Richmond had right-to-win in meat-free you’d probably have been met with a resounding (and maybe angry) no.

And if you’d asked the core Richmond consumer whether they were interested in a plant-based sausage, you’d probably have been met with an indifferent no.

But it turns out when brands make peace with their former rivals, consumers are often quick to follow suit (especially when making undeniably great products).

The political, economic, social and environmental climate of our times have us looking to the past for references to navigate, embrace or even escape from it.

AR ABBA

If you’re a Londoner and haven’t seen the earnest faces of Agnetha, AnniFrid, Bjorn and Benny staring at you from posters the city over you’re part of a diminishingly small group. Abba Voyage is the augmented reality concert giving the best of the super-groups live performances in the 70’s with an uncanny valley twist.

Using the latest AR tech, holographic avatars of the band sing, dance and delight to crowds of old timers and first-timers alike.

Abba Voyage represents a fusion of new and old, offering a unique and immersive encounter with the beloved music of Abba, captivating audiences with a sense of nostalgia made larger than life.

Embrace the old ways The era of mobile optimisation created a glut of minimalist, mobile-optimised brands, that in their simplicity began to merge into a sea of sameness.

The visual codes and design cues of past eras are metaphysical shortcuts to conjure the mood and feelings synonymous with the time period.

Naturally the pendulum has swung the other way and a desire-space has been created for the ornate, intricate and meaning-imbued design. Burberry’s redesign at the hand of new chief creative officer Daniel Lee provoked sighs of relief from designers the world over, for whom minimalism felt like a necessary evil as opposed to a thoughtful decision.

They’re so effective that even new players are calling on the evocative powers of the past to create faux-retro brands that speak to a certain mindset, that lives beyond being clearly read on a mobile screen.

The fully serifed and symbol-dense brand world speaks to a historic Britishness perfectly in juxtaposition with its contemporary photography and modernday British icons as campaign stars.

For better or worse, Fred Perry has always been a symbol of sticking it to the proverbial man.

Navigate the world

DEEPER-ROOTED MEANING

Clothes, tech, even a coffee cup, are all signallers to show our beliefs to the world without saying a word. When people come together over established brands of the past those values have already had time to root and grow into culture in meaningful ways.

CULTURAL RE-ESTABLISHMENT These nostalgic and well-established brands can act as an organic algorithm to find more community and subculture (as well as other brands) that align with the original values.

Thus heritage brands which choose to revisit the archive of design, reviving iconic work and seminal products, are presented with an opportunity to return to the original beliefs, values and founding ideas of the business.

Spotting the zitgeist

A contemporary twist on traditional acne treatment, here Newstalgia isn’t about rebuilding the design codes of an era but a return to youth itself.

Starface’s pimple patches are a playground-playful blemish product, that flips the narrative on hiding away in throes of face flare ups and instead turns them into something to give yourself a gold (or neon pink) star for.

Their punchy colours, unique shapes and beloved characters from Sesame Street to Sanrio, brings a little child-like joy to a Gen Z consumer for which every other aspect of their experience has been fast-tracked toward maturity.

Stay Wu Fashion’s stealth-like ability to take the threads of the past and evoke meaning with them today is well-documented, but technology, entertainment, FMCG, and beauty are all catching eyes and triggering nostalgia neurons with recent plays. Working with multiple nostalgic categories and icons can not only reinforce and bring alive the essence of a brand but also engage, and even create, niche interest groups at the intersection of all points.

One shining example of this is Ballantine’s ongoing collaboration with Wu Tang Clan member RZA. The first drop of the partnership features a one-of-its-kind record player and speaker made with Newstalgia stalwarts Crosley. Bringing the worlds of music, whisky and design together to create an experience deeply resonant with Ballantine’s mantra of Stay True.

In 10 years as Jameson’s global BTL agency we’ve played a key role in increasing annual global sales volume by 121%.

We launched Budweiser into the burgeoning whiskey category in India, creating Magnum Black Barrel. Within 12 months launched in 10 States, and stocked in 4,500 outlets winner of an AB InBev ‘Creative X’ Award for Product Innovation.

Flavour Head: Big, bold and beautiful We identified a niche in the overcrowded herbal tea market and pioneered the ‘botanical tea’ category with a range of cocktail- inspired infusions. Brewing nicely and listed in prominent retailers such as Selfridges and Booths.
