Welcome to

MISS O WEEK The quote “The only thing constant is change” encapsulates the idea that everything is in a state of flux and that nothing remains static.

Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus used the imagery of a river to illustrate this point, explaining that you cannot step into the same river water twice because it’s constantly flowing. Similarly, the world of pageantry is constantly changing, searching for its relevancy, purpose, and cause. I’m proud to say that the Miss Oklahoma Organization has stayed constant with its purpose, mission, and outcomes.

We’ve helped thousands of young women towards their career paths and provided an opportunity for them to share their cause and their why, while also showcasing their talent and commitment to community service. This year, all of this remains, just back in our hometown where our competition started: Oklahoma City. I remind everyone all the time that the Miss Oklahoma Organization is not tied to one city, but dedicated to serving the entire state. I know there were some mixed emotions, both good and not so good, about our move to Oklahoma City. But let me say that we’re so excited about this new change - this renewed central location in our state - to continue and build everything Miss Oklahoma/Miss Oklahoma’s Teen. We look forward to new relationships, new sponsorships, and welcoming new volunteers, all while maintaining all that has been with us throughout our history.

This time of the year is exciting as we meet our new titleholders and wish the best to our current titleholders as they step into the next chapters of their lives. We’ve been represented so well by Lauren Frost, Miss Oklahoma 2024, and Kynlee Schultheis, Miss Oklahoma’s Teen 2024. Both of these two young ladies represented us so honorably at the national competitions, as both were selected as a Top 10 finalist. Congratulations Lauren and Knylee on an outstanding year!

Thank you all for your patience as we worked through the changes of a new venue, new hotel, new ticket sales procedure and more. Good luck to the 40 Miss delegates and the 33 Teen delegates competing this year, and to all of the families represented by these young women.

Miss Oklahoma has experienced a river of change this year, all for the advancement and progress of our organization. While change is constant, the good of change is dependent on those that embrace it. I ask everyone to stay loyal, stay positive, and to stay enthusiastic about why we are all gathered here this week.

BECOMING MISS

Oklahoma

The crown and sash are the symbols, but the spirit of Miss Oklahoma lives in each of us. That’s what sets Oklahoma apart from the rest. There is a deeper meaning to the pageant - for contestants, for volunteers, for sponsors, for audience members. I recognized the spirit of Miss Oklahoma at the age of 13. I was drawn to this magnetic organization and what I witnessed it doing for those who were involved in it. I knew immediately I wanted to be included.

Throughout the years, on paper I lost far more than I won. I wasn’t the “predicted winner” or “the standout”. I didn’t make the top 10 more than I did make the cut.

But here is what I have learned - success is growth, not perfection. I wasn’t looking to be a perfect pageant contestant (spoiler alert it doesn't exist). I wasn’t looking to become the most popular person or the one with the most social media followers. I wanted to be the woman that came back every year and learned something new. Whether that was about myself or the organization or both. You see, my journey to becoming Miss Oklahoma took time, but that time allowed me the opportunity to fall in love with the meaning of Miss Oklahoma. To uncover the secret all contestants search for: “What does it take to become her?“ A little over a year ago, I cracked the code: I finally knew what I had to do to become Miss Oklahoma! I had to realize that all it took was recognizing she already lived within me. Miss Oklahoma is not simply a person. It’s a heart posture. It’s a call to action and service. It’s an opportunity to give back and a beacon of hope.

Miss Oklahoma will never be irrelevant because she is a symbol of strong character and hope for the future.

This legacy did not happen overnight.

It is with deep appreciation that I thank those who have boldly paved the way before me for 90 years and it is with great excitement that I prepare to support those who come after me.

Miss Oklahoma is not simply one person - the spirit of Miss Oklahoma is in the “Oklahoma” song we sing when the new titleholder gets crowned. It is in the way the sponsors donate scholarships for women to continue pursuing their education. It is in the way we invite the Oklahoma Stars on stage so that they may envision themselves on it again one day. It is in the way volunteers take time off of work to spend a week zipping dresses and setting up the stage. It is in the way the Miss Oklahoma Board celebrates each contestant's individual growth. It is in the way a student approaches after a school assembly and confides in you.

Honestly, take time to look around and I guarantee you will see the spirit of Miss Oklahoma in many different ways.

This year is not simply about me, It is about celebrating another year creating hope and uplifting women in the state of Oklahoma.

As CEO of Miss America, I am continually inspired by the extraordinary women who come through our program—women of intellect, purpose, resilience, and grace. Miss America is far more than a crown; it’s a catalyst. It’s a platform where women from all walks of life are celebrated not just for their presence, but for their passion, their discipline, and their relentless pursuit of excellence.

When they called, “Miss Oklahoma ... Lauren Frost” into the top 10, there was a moment when the world went quiet. For so long I’d watched women I admired become Miss Oklahoma and represent our great state.

As a little girl, I’d be glued to the TV as they graced the stage, performed their talents, and spoke with conviction. I’d wear a paper crown on my head and make a list predicting the top 5 (of course Oklahoma would always be the winner). Fast forward many years, it was my name they called. It hit me - I would be the Miss Oklahoma on TV that little girls would watch. I would be the Miss Oklahoma on TV that little girls would see and say “I want to do that” (no pressure).

I worked years and years to get to the Miss America stage. Every year I competed at the state level prepared me for the moment I checked in as a contestant at Miss America.

My experience was magical! Even through the lack of sleep, makeup disasters, and the unknowns - I knew that I was exactly where I was supposed to be - walking a path that had already been laid before me. Along with 52 titleholders, we gathered together to celebrate an organization that has changed the trajectory of so many women for over 100 years, and I was getting to be a part of that legacy.

The greatest accomplishment during my experience at Miss America was not placing as a semi finalist (although this was pretty awesome), but walking off the stage at the end of the week feeling PROUD of who I was and what I had done. I brought every piece of Lauren Frost to Miss America. The self confidence I had searched for all those awkward teen years was discovered. I knew that I was given a special opportunity and I used up every bit of it. I’m grateful that the Miss America Organization creates a space for women of all different walks of life and backgrounds to go on a journey of self discovery while being celebrated for the impact they make.

There’s no greater feeling than wearing the state you love across your chest. I’m deeply humbled and honored to have represented the Oklahoma standard on such an important level and I cannot wait to cheer on the future Miss O’s as they experience the same moment. Oh and as you can all imagine, I‘ve already booked the reunion for my Miss America class and I can confirm it’s true, you do meet some of your best friends at Miss America.

THE

OPTION

Being adopted - for me - is like knowing that my eyes are hazel or my hair is brown.

It’s a fact about me that I’ve known forever and I’m so proud of it.

Adoption is just another way to form a family.

From day one, I had no doubts about what my Community Service Initiative (CSI) would be. In fact, this was the first decision I made when signing up for my first local. My CSI is my life story. It’s something that’s been within my heart since I was a little girl. As a proud adoptee, I have felt a deep calling to give back because of my story. There hasn't been a single moment in my life where I didn't know my adoption story. I knew and felt proud of both the good and the hard parts of my story. It wasn't until 4th grade that I started to doubt my story when a boy said to me “I’m sorry you are adopted”.

I learned that not everyone's experience or view of adoption is positive. But I wanted to share my personal story as a way for others to see that for my family, adoption was the best option. Being adopted or placing a child for adoption doesn’t make you greater than or less than someone else. Each person’s journey is different and special. I am blessed to have been placed with a loving forever family.

I often think back to the moment in 2019 when Tammi and I met for the first time. It felt like I had known her my whole life. We laughed, cried and hugged as we reflected on and shared both of our life experiences. I felt like I found a missing piece of myself. Not long after we connected, both our families (including her three children and husband) met and started planning holidays together. I learned that my story is not just my story. It is their story, too: my parents, my birth parents, my adopted brother, my half-brothers and my half-sister. God orchestrated this story and had His hand over us all, even during the hard parts.

Over the past decade, I’ve cultivated partnerships with international and national adoption leaders. I represent the Gladney Center for Adoptions as a brand ambassador and national spokesperson. My story is featured in Gladney’s AdoptED program’s educational videos distributed to students, educators and medical professionals across the United States. In addition, I partner with Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a non-profit organization devoted to increasing adoptions. Dave Thomas is the founder of Wendy’s and an adoptee. As a featured speaker at the National Council for Adoption Conference, my voice and personal journey contributed to empowering others to understand the complexities and beauty of adoption, while also giving an example of healthy birth parent relationships. I work closely with a family law attorney and assist with court adoptions and am proud to have traveled to 39 states speaking to over 30,000 students.

My legacy is one of hope. To me, hope looks like my parents, David and Kathy, and my birth mom, Tammi. Hope feels like the moment I met Tammi for the first time. Hope is knowing that the greatest challenges can lead to life's greatest blessings.

“Adoption is just another way to form a family” or “There are no unwanted children, just unfound families”. Every time I hear you say these words in public, my heart swells with pride and warmth. Your dad and I are overjoyed that you have used your platform over the past several years to share your adoption story with thousands, inspiring many along the way.

From a young age, you naturally became an adoption advocate, always ready to answer curious questions and embrace your story with positivity. Fast forward to January 2025: when you spoke on the Miss America stage about your story, I was speechless, and you know I cried. Thank you for inviting me to join you as one of your travel companions – we had fun, didn’t we? Watching you spread hope across Oklahoma was incredibly special, and I will always cherish our memories. Your future is bright, knowing that God has a perfect plan for you. As Dad says, “I hope you win!”- and I have no doubt that you will. “Out of all the little girls in the world, how did God give me the very best one?” Love you forever, no matter what!

Saying goodbye to you was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, but I found peace knowing God had a great plan for your life. Through pictures and letters from your parents, I watched you grow into an incredible young woman. Reconnecting with you as an adult has been the greatest blessing of my life. I’ve watched you use your story, one that began with sadness and heartache, to give others hope. Many times, I considered my unplanned pregnancy a mistake, but seeing God work through you to help others has shown me that your story was always part of His perfect plan. That realization brings me more peace than you’ll ever know. I am so proud of you for your mission to spread the message of hope through adoption, but even more, I am proud of your courage, your servant’s heart, and the love for people that shines through everything you do. You have taken the broken pieces of my story and created a beautiful picture of hope, love, and redemption, and I know you will continue to change the lives of others!

Kay: It has been an honor to have a front row seat in your life. Watching you love your family, invest in this organization, and make the time to take every one of my phone calls has inspired me greatly. You are my home away from home.

Jack: Our moments together have been some of the most pivotal. You’ve helped me step out in a confidence that cannot be shaken. Thank you for teaching me how the most important legacy one can leave is one of character and faith. You are my anchor.

Kathleen: I love that we go from a fun moment to a serious conversation in a second’s notice. You have a very special light you bring into people's lives. Thank you doubling my shoe collection & for teaching me how to lead with grace. You are my constant.

Mignon: I pray one day I can be as funny as you. :) Remember when you made me cry? I don't mean to be dramatic, but you changed my life at that moment. You guided me to take a hard look at who God created me to be and to trust my purpose without question or doubt. You are my driving force.

Judges Jill Donovan

Brent Hart

As the founder of Rustic Cu!, Jill Donovan’s journey has been anything but ordinary. A former attorney and adjunct law professor at the University of Tulsa, she stepped away from the courtroom and into a life of creativity.

Brent Hart serves as Executive Director of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he has held since March 2023. A resident of Oklahoma City since 2004, Brent’s dedication to the arts and community spans over a decade.

What began as a late-night idea quickly became Jill’s personal mission. In 2011, she transformed a creative hobby into a nationally recognized brand. She wanted to design tangible reminders of life-giving words of hope that people could carry with them everywhere they went.

With no experience in making cu!s, she immersed herself in the process by researching materials, experimenting with designs, and mastering the craft from the ground up.

Brent’s journey with the OKCPHIL began on the Associate Board in 2012, evolving into roles on the Board of Directors, the Philharmonic Foundation, and culminating in his tenure as President of the Oklahoma Philharmonic Society’s Board of Directors during the transformative 20/21 and 21/22 seasons.

Brent has served in various volunteer positions for a dozen Oklahoma City nonprofits and has held leadership positions in Human Resources at companies including, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, WilliamsSonoma, Inc., Love’s Travel Stops and Country Stores, and Gulfport Energy Corporation.

Over the last 14 years, Rustic Cu! has grown from a single bracelet into a widely respected brand, with showrooms in locations like Disney Springs, Dallas, Chicago, and Oklahoma. Today, it continues to serve customers around the globe, both online and through its flagship location in Tulsa.

As Executive Director, Brent leads the business and administrative functions of the organization, planning the Philharmonic’s classics, pops, and discovery series concert seasons, and other special performances, concerts, and events. A staunch advocate for music performance and education, Brent’s vision extends beyond the stage, aiming to enrich lives through the transformative power of music.

Known for its meaningful designs and the deep connections they create, Rustic Cu! has been featured extensively on national television and worn by well-known figures across sports, fashion, and entertainment. Twice selected for Oprah’s Favorite Things, the brand has touched countless lives and fostered connections worldwide.

As a national speaker, Jill uses her signature storytelling and humor to share messages of hope, freedom, and faith with audiences across the country. She extends this connection through her weekly blog and podcast ‘Practically Speaking.’ Jill is the author of The Kindness E!ect and the upcoming book Live Like Everyone Loves You, set to release in the fall of 2025. She is also the visionary behind the new Jill Donovan Collection, where she brings her love for artistry, storytelling, and craftsmanship to life.

In 2023, Brent’s commitment to excellence was further evidenced by his completion of the prestigious Essentials of Orchestra Management program at Juilliard, in collaboration with the League of American Orchestras, and his participation in the esteemed Oklahoma Standards for Excellence, hosted by the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits.

Additionally, Brent is an alum of Leadership Oklahoma City’s LOYAL program.

Driven by a lifelong passion for service, Brent’s journey began with volunteer work with the American Red Cross, where he trained individuals in disaster response, health, and safety programs, igniting a flame of service and compassion.

She is married to her college sweetheart, Terry, and they live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with their two daughters, Ireland and Peanut. Through every chapter of her journey, Jill reminds others that the most difficult detours often lead to the most beautiful breakthroughs.

Stacy James Mayo

Lee Erik Eachus

Stacy James Mayo, Miss Texas 2001, has judged many events over the years. She is a Baylor graduate and attended law school after her year of service, at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, using all of her scholarship money from winning the Miss Texas title. She married Ben Mayo in 2005 and they have been married for 20 years. After law school, Stacy toured with the Gaither Homecomings, recorded 4 CD’s, and produced many shows, including the Miss Texas Pageant for 3 years. In September of 2023, Stacy started producing the Miss Texas High pageant. She has played in various roles with the Texarkana Repertory Company such as Belle in “Beauty and the Beast”, Elizabeth in “Young Frankenstein”, Brooke in “Legally Blonde”, Guinevere in “Spamalot” and Mary Poppins as the title character to name a few.

Stacy has sat on various boards in her hometown including the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra, CASA, and The Texarkana Alzheimer’s Association. Part time, Stacy is an event planner. She has orchestrated many events throughout East Texas including Dine on the Line, the Texarkana Jazz Fundraisers and Temple Memorial Fundraisers to

Lee Erik Eachus is currently the Associate Director of Foundation and Government Relations at Miami City Ballet in Miami Beach, Florida. Prior to this role, he served as a professor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Kentucky, College of Fine Arts.

A classically trained ballet dancer, Lee lived and worked in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Sydney, Australia, performing in original productions by choreographer’s Danny Teeson, Justin Peck, and Liz Imperio. Lee also worked alongside Steven Schwartz of the hit Broadway musical Wicked for an original new work entitled Magic To Do — Lee retired from the stage in 2014. Following his performance career, he would go on to earn his Master’s Degree in Arts Leadership & Management from Savannah College of Art & Design. Since, Lee has built a career in fundraising and development for some of the nation’s most recognized ballet companies, including Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Cincinnati Ballet.

name a few. Stacy still performs and sings but the lights of her life are her children, David (17) and Alexis (14). David will be a senior at Texas High where he plays on the Varsity Golf Team and was voted Vice President of his class. Alexis has been involved with the Texas State and International Cinderella Scholarship Pageant and after winning her first title of Miss Texarkana Cinderella 2022, went on to compete in the International Cinderella pageant in July 2023, winning the overall title International Cinderella Miss. Alexis now holds the title of Miss Northeast Texas’ Teen and will compete in Miss Texas’ Teen in June. Stacy and her children are in a family band called The Mayos. They entertain at various events in the East Texas area.

For more than 50 years he served as a volunteer for the Miss South Carolina Pageant while producing, writing and directing both preliminary shows and the live telecast. In recent years he served as Assistant Judges Chair for the Miss Florida Pageant. Jay has judged numerous State Pageants and has served on 2 panels that selected Miss Americas. Savvy Shields Miss America 2017 and Abbie Stockard Miss America 2025.

Nakiya Troth A lifelong advocate for scholarship and service, Nakiya Troth’s journey in the Miss America Organization began as a young woman with a dream. She never imagined that one day, she would lead the Miss Connecticut Organization through its historic 90th anniversary. Nakiya has worn many hats in the pageant world however, her proudest accomplishments were serving as Executive Director, where she helped the Miss Connecticut Organization achieve record-breaking scholarship awards and produced two Top 5 finalists at Miss America in 2018 and 2019. Retiring from the position in 2020, to allow for her daughter to compete. Peyton did not disappoint and was crowned Miss Connecticut’s Teen in 2022, securing the Evening Wear and Onstage Question preliminary award and Teens in Action Finalist spot at the national pageant.

Benjamin McKey Benjamin McKey is a dynamic and accomplished professional with a passion for education and empowering others.

Originally from South Florida, Ben has lived in both Europe and the Caribbean, broadening his global perspective. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from Florida International University and a Master’s degree in Sociology from Sam Houston State University.

With over a decade of experience as a teacher, Ben has dedicated himself to shaping young minds and fostering the skills that lead to success. He is currently an Account Executive with Savvas Learning Company, where he continues to advocate for innovative educational solutions for students, teachers, and parents throughout the Pacific Northwest.

A trained vocalist, Nakiya was also a proud member of the Liberty Misses, a USO-style troupe that entertained veterans and active-duty military across the U.S., and abroad. She also made a memorable appearance on TLC’s What Not to Wear, refining her signature style along the way. Professionally, she serves as the Director of Property Management for a New Jersey-based real estate firm.

In addition to his work in education, Ben is a former speech and debate coach, having led his students to success at both state and national levels. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to excellence have helped countless students grow in confidence and skill.

But her most cherished role? Full-time Wife & “Momager”! Nakiya resides in Bristol, Connecticut, with her husband, Allen, and their children. Daughter Peyton, 18, who will attend the University of Alabama in Fall 2025 on a full-tuition scholarship awarded to her through the Miss America Opportunity. Son Jaxon, 13, is a standout athlete with a passion for baseball, while 6-year-old son Memphis is a musical theatre enthusiast destined for the stage. From the stage to the sidelines, Nakiya’s passion for mentorship, leadership, and empowering the next generation shines in all that she does.

Now residing in Battle Ground Washington, Ben brings a diverse and well-rounded perspective to his role as a judge for Miss Oklahoma. His passion for education, public speaking, and cultural awareness makes him a valuable asset in the selection of the next Miss Oklahoma.

John Robert (Jay) Pitts Jay is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in Political Science. Throughout his career he served 5 Governors over a span of 29 years as Real Estate Commissioner and Executive Director of the Engineers and Land Surveyors Board for the State of South Carolina. He also worked as Corporate Relations Director for the University of South Carolina and Director of Tourism, Marketing and Special Events for Pickens County. After retirement, Jay went back to work for the Diocese of Charleston in South Carolina where serves as Director of Stewardship and Ministry Coordination for St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

He partnered with Fisher Films as Executive Producer focusing on a

lifelong passion of working in the production field. He successfully completed a 5-hour docuseries entitled American Royalty which focuses on the 100-year anniversary of The Miss America Pageant. Jay has worked in the production world producing and directing awards shows, festivals, outdoor concerts and high-level corporate events.

Our Former Miss Americas For years the Miss Oklahoma Pageant was held in Oklahoma City and was at the First Christian Church there since 1952. The pageant moved to Tulsa with the 1964 pageant being held in the Civic Center with Toni Spencer as the Executive Director and Ralph Blane as the Producer/Director. Miss America 1958 Marilyn Van Derbur was the mistress of ceremonies and it was televised statewide. The Kiwanis Club of Tulsa became co-sponsore of the pageant in 1966, and took over full sponsorship in 1972 with Charles Welch as the Executive Director. The Oranization is now under the leadership and sponsorhip of the Miss Oklahoma Executive Board of Directors, Jack Cooper, Chairman of the Board/ President and Kay Welch Alexander, Executive Director.

In saluting our former Miss Oklahomas, records show that Nellie Grant from Ada, Oklahoma, represented our state in the 1922 Miss America Pageant. In 1926 there was no state pageant, but Norma Smallwood, Miss Tulsa, competed and became the first Oklahoman to win the Miss America Pageant. Since then we have had five other winners from Oklahoma – Miss America 1967 Jane Anne Jayroe, Miss America 1981 Susan Powell, Miss America 1996 Shawntel Smith, Miss America 2006 Jennifer Berry and Miss America 2007 Lauren Nelson . . . backto-back Miss Americas, an event that had not occurred ince 1959 and 1960. 1996 Shawntel Smith becomes Oklahoma’s fourth Miss America

To date, ninety women have represented Oklahoma at the Miss America competition and ninety-five women have worn the crown of Miss Oklahoma due to winners from Oklahoma winning the Miss America crown and runners-up taking the title of Miss Oklahoma. Some sources say that the first Miss Oklahoma was Nellie Grant from Ada in 1922, but there’s no record of her competing at Miss America.

Early Miss Oklahoma competitions were held at the First Christian Church in downtown Oklahoma City. The pageant moved to the Tulsa Civic Center in 1964 and moved again to Oral Roberts University’s Mabee Center in 1975. In 2018, our competition moved to the River Spirit Casino Resort in Tulsa’s Southside. And in 2025, we move back ‘home’ to the OKC metro at the Rose State College Performing Arts Center. Different groups have served as sponsors of the pageant. In 1966, the Kiwanis Club of Tulsa became a co-sponsor and then, under the direction of Charles E. Welch (father to current Executive Director Kay Alexander), the Kiwanis took on sole sponsorship in 1972. The Kiwanis Club remained a supporting sponsor until the early 2010’s. The competition has since been governed and sponsored by the Miss Oklahoma Executive Board, with Jack P. Cooper serving as Chairman of the Board and President, and Kay Alexander as Executive Director.

Additional Executive Board members include Mignon Merchant Ball, Roger Herring, Kathleen Pettigrove, and Lecye Doolen Lippoldt.

The Miss Oklahoma Organization has more than 400 volunteers at the State and Local levels each year. The Miss Oklahoma Leadership Team consist of Natasha Alikhani, Teresa Alikhani, Winston Banta, Rachel Goff-Belmon, Addison Price Brown, Taylor Treat Burget, Angie Citty, Georgia Frazier Canady, Chad Lemon, Lindsey Miller Hanson, Samantha Mullens, Denise Piland, LaRadius Allen Stephens, Stephanie Stidham, and Nathan Thompson. Many organizations and businesses around the state help sponsor Miss Oklahoma including the Chickasaw Nation, one of the largest Native American tribes in the United States.

In Oklahoma, more than 200 young women compete annually for local titles on their journey to Miss America. Oklahoma ranks as one of the most successful state pageants at the national level with six women winning the title of Miss America. Our state has also accumulated many other awards in the Miss America competition: Top five 21 times, top ten 34 times, top twelve 2 times, top fifteen 2 times, and top twenty (when it was announced) 1 time. Miss Oklahomas have won preliminary talent 11 times and fitness/swimsuit 6 times. Seven have received non-finalist talent awards, one special judges’ award, two Miss Congeniality, one Quality of Life winner, 2 runners-up to Quality of Life, and several finalists for the Quality of Life award.

Tulsa’s Norma Smallwood became the first Oklahoma woman and first Native American to wear the Miss America crown in 1926. Norma made approximately $100,000 in appearance fees and product endorsements that year, which was more than the President of the U.S. made at the time. In 1967, Laverne’s Jane Anne Jayroe became our second Miss America and although pageant officials did not recommend the travel, to this day Jane is proud that she was the first Miss America to tour a combat zone when she performed in Vietnam USO shows. Oklahoma had its third Miss America when Susan Powell, a twenty-one-year-old vocal-music major at Oklahoma City University, won the title of Miss America 1981. Susan has had a successful career in opera and theatre, and many know her as the host of the Discovery Channel show Home Matters. Muldrow’s Shawntel Smith was announced as Miss America 1996 and brought home our state’s fourth crown. After choosing the "School to Work Education" program as her platform, the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor appointed her as the National School to Work Ambassador to America's Youth. Tulsa’s Jennifer Berry became Oklahoma’s fifth Miss America in 2006 and, during her reign, she worked as a national spokesperson for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Jennifer was the first Miss America crowned in Las Vegas. Oklahoma became only the second state at the time to claim back-to-back winners when Lawton’s Lauren Nelson followed Jennifer to claim the title of Miss America 2007. Lauren's national platform was "Be Net Smart, Protecting Kids Online" and as a result she teamed up with host John Walsh on the FOX television show America's Most Wanted to assist in the apprehension of potential child predators. Lauren put herself in harm's way to help get many people offline and away from innocent children.

All of our Miss Oklahoma title holders have made huge contributions to our great state through their school speaking programs, lobbying for change or improvement through their social platforms and initiatives, and speaking at a variety of charity, fundraising, and other philanthropic events throughout the state and beyond. A Miss Oklahoma’s number one responsibility is to be the face and spokesperson for our highly successful organization. Each titleholder must raise the bar from year to year and leave a legacy for herself.

Another key element of the Miss Oklahoma Organization is working in tandem with the Miss Oklahoma Foundation, a 501c-3 foundation that provides scholarships for our competition. The Miss Oklahoma Organization makes available over $2.5 million dollars in cash and in-kind scholarships each year and we’re proud that the cash prizes awarded at the state competition are some of the largest nationwide. The Foundation board includes Mignon Merchant Ball, Jack Cooper, Taylor Treat Burget, Roy Williams, and Kay Alexander. All monies raised for scholarships deposit into the Foundation and, at the end of year after subtracting operating expenses, any money remaining within the Miss Oklahoma Organization is funneled into the Foundation. This is what allows us to fund scholarships received during the Miss Oklahoma competitions. We’re also fortunate to make available other in-kind scholarships donated by colleges and universities across Oklahoma.

Each Miss Oklahoma Delegate committed to mentory the young girl has seclected to be her “star.” The mentoring program is entitled “Oklahoma Stars” because it brings together the pride in our state as well as promoting our state’s “stars” of tomorrow. Jerry Evans was a volunteer with Miss Oklahoma for over 50 years. Known as the leader of the “Altus husbands”, Jerry supported his wife Danette in all aspects of making the Miss Altus competition one of the very best in the state. The whole town of Altus supports the pageant greatly because of Danette and Jerry’s leadership. Jerry never met a stranger, and his smile could charm the world. One could always count on Jerry to have a funny story to tell. He leaves a legacy that will be unmatched in our Miss Oklahoma Organization.

Queen of the Hearts Evelyn’s community service began the day she was born, on Valentine’s Day, with a heart murmur. Connected to nodes and wires in the NICU, her grandparents gave her a nickname to hold onto hope: “Queen of the Hearts.” What started as a term of endearment has become the mission that defines her life.

That early diagnosis became more than a story when heart disease showed up again in her family. Evelyn’s mother suffered a heart attack. Her grandmother was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. In both moments, Evelyn was ready, not just as a daughter and granddaughter, but as a certified CPR instructor trained by the American Heart Association.

She had the skills to help because she had taken the time to learn them.

Now, as Miss Grand Lake, she’s making sure others can say the same. Evelyn teaches CPR in the places people live and gather, classrooms, gyms, churches, and neighborhood centers. In the past year, she has certified over 1,000 Oklahomans, from teenagers to business owners.

She partners with physicians to promote the Rescue Me CPR App and works alongside legislators to improve access to heart health education. Her efforts have been recognized by both the Governor’s Office and the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Along the way, she’s become a collector of heart stories. One of the most meaningful came during American Heart Association advocacy day, when Senator Julia Kirt shared that her grandfather passed away from a heart attack in his fifties. That loss inspired her uncle to become a cardiologist. It’s a reminder Evelyn carries with her: we all have a heart story, whether it is us, someone we love, or our friends and family’s loved ones.

That’s why she hopes Oklahomans take the time to learn their heart story, get screened, and learn CPR, because understanding your heart could save your life, and knowing what to do could save someone else’s
