Miss Ohio’s Thank You & Year Preliminary Awards 2019 Miss Ohio Candidates Miss Ohio 50th AnniversaryMiss Ohio 2019 & 2020
To the people of Ohio, thank you for letting me serve this wonderful state.
Where do I start? From the moment I was crowned, I knew my reign as Miss Ohio would be different. I never expected a Global Pandemic to hit or to get two years, but I am so thankful for my time as Miss Ohio and those who have unconditionally supported me and made these two years possible.
To the Department of Public Safety and Gov. Mike DeWine, thank you for listening to me. From our first meeting, you were ready to work and Implement Text-to-911 statewide.
To the Renaissance Theater, thank you for being my second family, and giving the creative space to grow both personally and professionally.
To all those who opened their doors to me, especially the Speelmans, Wells, Herlihys and Bishops, thank you for your hospitality.
To Doc Stumbo, number one fan and planning committee of one, thank you for your devotion.
To my sisters of the Miss America and Miss Ohio Scholarship program, past and present, thank you for your friendship, hour long phone calls and endless support.
To the Class of 2021 (and 2020) – thank you for your resilience.
To my Miss Ohio Family (hosts, directors, board members and laborers), I cannot think of a better organization of which to be a proud member. Thank you for your support.
To my local directors - Jacky, Debbie, and Rhonda. Thank you for allowing me to be my crazy self. You all believed in me before I believed in myself and encouraged me to see myself not only as Miss Ohio but as an advocate, role model and leader.
To Steven (my personal therapist), you were always there to guide me through the most triumphant and most trying times of the last two years. From the late night calls, listening to endless ideas and suggestions, to the day to day work of the job, thank you for being a guiding force and constant support.
To the people of Ohio, thank you for letting me serve this wonderful state. Thank you for sharing your stories with me, for welcoming me with open arms, for your willingness to learn about emergency safety. Thank you for your acceptance.
To those that love me for who I truly am and uphold me always, thank you for being my family. I take with me many lessons learned, unforgettable memories, a tough skin, a smile in my heart, and unbridled joy for the experience afforded by the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program.
Forever thankful, Caroline Grace Williams

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

The goal of our efforts is to find the best Miss Ohio and potential Miss America. This responsibility rests solely in the hands of our distinguished judges. When the candidates appear before them in the various competitions these judges will consider their attributes and their ability to represent the ideal American woman; a woman with dignity, poise, charm and beauty, as well as the necessary intellect, education and talent to carry Ohio’s hopes to the coveted Crown of Miss America.
The Miss America Organization is not looking for a beauty queen; there are dozens in every state. We are seeking a woman capable of symbolizing American ideals and standards while carrying out this responsibility in the interest of her country.

- Laurel Lea Schaefer Miss Ohio 1971
If there was ever the All-American - Girl Next Door, Laurel Lea Schaefer fit the bill! She grew up in the idyllic town of Bexley (east Columbus, OH), where, as a child, she loved riding her bike, producing backyard productions, taking ballet lessons, and reading books in her playhouse. “Laurie” was active with the Columbus Junior Theatre of the Arts, her church youth group, and Girl Scouts. She enjoyed competitive swimming, tennis and had the distinction of winning a gold medal in the Junior Olympics for her record-setting, standing broad jump. She excelled in music, drama, and dance, performing lead roles in her high school and community productions. Laurel was known for being spunky, adventuresome, and whose outgoing personality and compassionate heart always made people feel special!
The Ohio University Drama Department (Athens, OH) recognized Laurel’s diverse talents and tenacious spirit by awarding her the recipient of a four-year theatre arts scholarship culminating in her receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her accomplishments were impressive; Dean’s List, lead roles for the theatre and music departments, Angel Flight (women’s support group for Air Force) area commander ranked as Lt. Col., and membership in Alpha Xi Delta sorority. In her freshman year, the sorority nominated Laurel to compete for Miss Southern Ohio and, despite no prior pageant experience, she entered and won!
The 1968 Miss Ohio experience didn’t produce any significant results other than encouraging her to try again. The following year, Laurel returned as Miss Central Ohio and was named a Top 10 Finalist. Learning more about herself, her potential, and her earnest desire to achieve the state title, Laurel entered the Miss Ohio University competition. She did not win but, Ohio pageant producer Denny Keller offered Laurel an opportunity to return to the Ohio pageant, not as a contestant but as part of the entertainment troupe. By not being a contestant, she became aware of the essence of competition; be prepared, be yourself, and relax and enjoy the ride. In 1971, having just graduated from college, Laurel returned as Miss Central Ohio for a third try at the state competition. Upon arrival, the press asked, “You’re back, so what’s your strategy?” With a wry smile and a twinkle in her eyes, she responded, “I figure if I come back enough times, the odds are with me that I’ll eventually win!” It worked! Laurel was named Miss Ohio 1971 and light-heartedly exclaimed she was now pursuing the “Triple Crown!”
On September 11, 1971, Burt Parks named Laurel as Miss America 1972, and as outgoing Miss America, Phyllis George pinned the crown on Laurel’s head; she whispered, “You’re in for the ride of your life!” Indeed! During her year, Laurel would travel the country’s length and breadth and log more than 100,000 air miles, meet with the President of the United States in the White House, Oval Office, throw out the first ball at the World Series, cut the ribbon for the opening day at Walt Disney World, present at the Emmy Awards, appear in the Rose Bowl and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, delivered more keynote speeches and sign more autographs than could ever be counted!
Just days after winning, Laurel introduced the idea that Miss America should have a “Mission” to provide more substance and relativity for the year. Being an outspoken advocate for the military and the daughter of a WW11 Navy Veteran, Laurel showed support and solidarity for our
U.S. military service members by wearing a pewter wristband inscribed with the name of a POW/MIA. Laurel focused on specific talking points for press conferences, T.V. talk shows, news interviews, publications and, presentations to counter negative press, anti-war demonstrations, and radical doctrines. All a sign of the times!
Laurel’s auspicious journey from 1971 to 2021 is a portrait of perseverance! Her accomplishments and pursuits, albeit many, were often met with challenges, ridicule, and betrayals. As a Miss America, she was burned in effigy, jeered at, spit upon, had rocks thrown at her, and even death threats. Her mother often reminded Laurel that, “People don’t shoot at burnt-out lightbulbs!” Heeding that advice, she triumphed over adversity by maintaining dignity, courage, a deep commitment to her moral integrity and Christian convictions, and a desire to use her talents and abilities for the greater good.
Laurel is the recipient of; The American Academy of Achievement Gold Plate Award, Outstanding Alumni Award (Ohio University), Tom Dooley Humanitarian Award, New Jersey’s “Woman of the Year” Award, Ohio Governor’s Award, Zonta International’s Leadership of Excellence Award, National Jaycees Significant Achievement Award, and listings in Who’s Who and Outstanding Women of America.
Laurel is a lyric soprano who has performed on The Tonight Show and the Dinah Shore Show. President Nixon invited her to sing the National Anthem at the 1973 Inauguration. She performed with the Pasadena Pops Symphony, headlined in Capturing the Heart of Gershwin concert tour, and most recently performed at the Hollywood Bowl with Pink Martini, the L.A. Philharmonics, and 13 of her Miss America sisters!
Laurel was the Founder and CEO of “The Women’s Leadership Foundation,” a 501(c)3 non-profit organization empowering leadership skills for women in transition. She designed the “Crown Collection” pageant swimwear which, Gretchen Carlson wore, and won the swimsuit competition when she competed for Miss America. Today, Laurel is the owner and casting director of Creative Casting Services, specializing in children’s commercials and animated feature films.
Laurel’s notable speaking provided opportunities to serve as a spokesperson for companies such as U.S. Steel, Gillette, Campbell’s Soup, Nestle, and Allis-Chalmers and to facilitate national and international conferences such as the U.S.-Japan Grassroots Leadership Conference (in Tokyo).
With all her accolades, this woman of substance and humility takes no credit for her success but gives glory to Jesus Christ! Having lost her father to leukemia on her tenth birthday, Laurel learned early in life the value of time, obedience, and living in God’s will. She embraces the biblical reference, “For of those to whom much is given, much is required.”
-Laurel Lea Schaefer

EMCEE THURSDAY EVENING
Winning the title of Miss Ohio in 2001 truly changed my life! After traveling for a year as Miss Ohio, I graduated from Miami University’s business school debt-free (thanks to the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program)! In 2004, I became Natalie Witwer “Metzger” and moved with my husband, Matt, to Manhattan. There, he pursued his acting career while I modeled for several years before joining the management side of an investment firm. Several years later, we had our first daughter and decided to come home to Ohio, trading the hustle and bustle of the city for green grass and family. While “home,” we lived in several great Ohio cities, and I had the opportunity to create and run a successful photography studio, putting both my modeling experience and marketing degree to the test! During those years, we were so fortunate to be blessed with two more beautiful children and wonderful memories with our family and friends. In 2020, we took a great leap of faith and made the move to Nashville, TN, where I am excited to walk through the pages of yet another new adventure in my life’s journey!

CamiIle Schrier grew up In Bucks County, Pennsylvania, before moving to Virginia in pursuit of her undergraduate degrees. In 2018, Camille graduated with honors from Virginia Tech with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Systems Biology, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University.
As a young woman who previously battled an eating disorder and body image issues, Camille chose to compete in the Miss America program because of the redirection from physical appearance to social impact. In June of 2019, Camille was named Miss Virginia after breaking from tradition to perform the “catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide” as her onstage talent. Her unique talent performance and focus on women in STEM has sparked a positive reaction of inclusivity for the program as a whole. Camille’s story has been viewed by millions on national and international media outlets including The Today Show, Talk Stoop, CNN, BBC, The Kelly Clarkson Show, CBS This Morning, Inside Edition, The Weather Channel, Southern Living, Canada’s CTV, Germany’s RTL, and many more.
On December 19, 2019, Camille earned the job of Miss America 2020 after competing live on NBC from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. Camille was awarded the Engineering Champion Award by the Phi Sigma Rho National Sorority for her work in promoting women in engineering and technical fields.
Camille has been busy sharing her passion for science and drug safety at many events, including being the first Miss America to speak in the General Assembly at the United Nations through a special invitation by HRH Princess Dr. Nisreen El-Hashemite, Executive Director of the Royal Academy of Science International Trust, for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly.
More than 130 Americans die each day from an opioid overdose. Medication errors occur in over 7 million patients a year with an associated cost of nearly $21 billion dollars across all care settings.

In the summer of 1921, on the boardwalk of Atlantic City, an American icon was born.
For the past 100 years, Miss America has been one of the country’s most recognizable household names and has been at the center of everything from national trends to social movements to the birth of television. The young women involved have made a significant difference in people’s lives through their charitable and community service endeavors, using the national platform to educate millions of Americans on issues facing the nation.
In the decades just prior to the competition’s creation, there was a marked transformation around women’s roles in society with expanding social, political and cultural activity for women. A new image for women developed, symbolizing the changing times. The modern woman was vigorous. She exercised and was encouraged to eat right. This was an unprecedented break from the rigorously controlled physicality prescribed for the ideal 19th century woman, with its emphasis on delicacy and fragility.
1 930s
In 1933, the country was in the throes of the Great Depression. Some prominent Atlantic City businessmen finally decided to revive the competition after being convinced they were missing out on valuable revenue. The outdoor parades and other big attractions were left out due to the high cost that Depression Era businesses could not afford. Due to the lack of adequate publicity, the 1933 event was a financial disaster. It was not revived in Atlantic City on secure financial footing until 1935.
Innovations to raise the public image included the talent segment, which was added to the competition in 1935, and the formation of the vast Hostess Committee. The committee was made up of prominent Atlantic City women.
1 940s
During World War II, the competition once again faced discontinuation, this time because of war. Officials had to think quickly and adapt to the changing world around them.
Miss America was transformed into an emblem of patriotism and national pride. Her image was connected to the war effort as the winners of those years sold more war bonds than any other public figure. Thus began the tradition of Miss America as a morale booster for American troops.
Also during the 1940s, the Miss America Organization created the single most important innovation of its time—a scholarship program. Sponsoring scholarships changed the program dramatically, which, with time, helped the organization become the country’s leading provider of educational scholarships for women.
1 950s
1950 m arked the start of post dating the title. In September 1950, Miss Alabama, Yolande Betbeze, was crowned “Miss America 1951.”
With television taking the country by storm, the advent of a telecast caught the imagination of the American public. For the first time, the Miss America Competition came into people’s homes. The annual program provided a kind of entertainment never before experienced nationally. It seemed that the women onstage embodied the dreams of every young girl.
By the end of the 1950s, Miss America had become an international symbol of the ideal young woman. For many, their earliest memories of television are of Bert Parks, surrounded by intelligent, talented and beautiful young women vying for the coveted title of Miss America.
The 1960s were once again a time of redefinition for the Miss America Organization, as well as for American society. Television ratings continued to soar and in 1966 the first color broadcast hit the airways.
But soon, the country’s attention began to focus on our involvement in the Vietnam War. It became apparent there was a need for Miss America’s role to expand even more. Although the organization was heavily criticized for the 1967 launch of the “Miss America USO Troupes” into Vietnam and around the world. To this day, the Miss America Organization, maintains its support of the US Armed Forces.
In 1968, feminists stormed the boardwalk in Atlantic City in their crusade for equal rights. They used Miss America as a symbol for their fight, which encouraged even more change for the Miss America Organization.
The 50th Anniversary in 1970 saw a rise in television ratings. By 1974, a law student crowned a doctorate student. The groundwork for the modern Miss America was sealed. Not only were candidates becoming more interested in gaining a good education, they also saw Miss America as a means to success. As the momentum of the women’s movement grew, the women of Miss America were increasingly turning their attention to professional goals.
The decade witnessed several firsts beginning in 1980 when Doris Janell Hayes (Washington) and Lencola Sullivan (Arkansas) became the first African-American women to win preliminary awards and Miss Sullivan becoming the first African-American woman to place in the Top Five. Vanessa Williams was crowned Miss America 1984 becoming the first African-American woman to win the coveted Miss America title. Kaye Lani Rae Rafko was the first Registered Nurse when named Miss America 1988 which became the genesis of the official platform requirement in 1989.
The 1990s marked a new era as young women increasingly began to see the Miss America program as an opportunity to pursue higher education, professional opportunities and social causes. Winners of the title started becoming internationally recognized spokeswomen on issues ranging from literacy to AIDS awareness. Each Miss America was now required to have a platform issue to increase the public’s awareness during their national speaking tour.
The new millennium brought many exciting challenges and fresh changes to the Miss America Organization. The scholarship foundation continued to grow, and more and more individuals began to recognize the importance of the countless community service hours the candidates offered their communities. In conjunction with CMT and TLC, the Organization was fortunate to align itself with new network partners who understood the intrinsic value of this historic institution while making it more relatable to young women across America.
Miss America has evolved in society as women in society have evolved. In 2019, candidates were no longer judged on physical appearance. That meant the elimination of the swimsuit competition and additional time and focus on the candidates’ voices to be heard more often.
Throughout the competition and in interviews, candidates had additional opportunities to advocate for their social impact initiatives and to demonstrate how they are uniquely qualified for the exciting and challenging 365-day job of being Miss America.
With innovative education, research, partnerships, and outreach programs, Dakota State University is redefining cyber.
DSU supports women as they rise to meet their goals in education and their careers. A special congratulations to all the women of Miss America 2020.
