Heavy vehicle drivers often spend long hours behind the wheel and their work requires utmost concentration day and night. Good visual function is a necessity in order to avert accidents and promote road safety. 60% of traffic accidents in India are attributed to impaired vision and about 68% of heavy vehicle drivers admitted that they have never had their eyes tested for their driver’s license renewal.2 Another study found that nearly 43% of truckers had some form of refractive errors that included presbyopia, myopia and hyperopia.3 Our Mission Disha programme proactively enables eye health interventions for heavy vehicle drivers, bus drivers and skilled workers such as carpenters. Through this programme, we provide timely eye testing; individuals identified with refractive errors are provided spectacles at no cost and those in need of advanced treatment or surgery are referred to higher tertiary care.
