FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Mission ONE has spent the last 18 months walking alongside our partners as their communities are battling COVID. We did not expect to spend over a year with relief distributions of food and medical supplies as our primary work, but God has prepared us beforehand. His church around the world provided hope and opportunities to respond to many in need. Donors like you stood with us in prayer and support. And we are celebrating.

spent significant amounts of time laying plans for the future. That meant lots of long conversations with each of our partners about work in over 20 countries. Every Mission ONE partner has a new community transformation project either in progress or ready to launch as soon as their communities have recovered from the pandemic.

In particular, we are grateful that a pilot project in Nepal of holistic community church planting (Chou Padi Bikash, in Nepali) was successful. Check out the story that follows for

more details. We plan to reproduce this project starting with five new villages soon.

We are excited about the things that are to come in this next year, and the ways we will get to celebrate God being glorified by the Global Church as we seek to make communities look more like the Kingdom of God. William Strickland Mission ONE, President

CHOU PADI BIKASH means "Holistic Development" in Nepali Work has always been part of God’s design for his people, starting with Adam, who was tasked with taking care of all the animals and plants on earth. In fact, Ecclesiastes 2:24 says “there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work.” All work is meant to glorify God. However, one aspect of poverty that is often overlooked is the ability to participate in meaningful, dignified work that allows someone to meet their basic needs—and eventually use their Godgiven skills to live fully into God’s purpose for their life.

For Pumaya Praja, having a sustainable income has been a major source of struggle in her life. After her husband passed away due to liver disease, the young woman has been living day to day, just trying to survive. Things got even worse when the pandemic hit, leaving Nepal on strict lockdown. Pumaya didn't know what to do.

That all changed when Mission ONE partners in Nepal began working with the Chepang families. Collaborating with the local leaders, Mission ONE wanted to come up with a livelihood program for the Cave People that would be aligned with their skills and environment. Quickly, they discovered that a few individuals in the village already knew how to breed goats, making that a promising option. When NEPAL | THE JUBILEE REPORT

they did further research, they realized that the Cave People’s “backyard”— Nepal’s jungle filled with wild fodder shrubs—was perfect for feeding the goats.

The livelihood program was born.

To start, each of the partnering families received two goats to breed, including Pumaya. As goats are able to have up to three kids in one litter, these offspring will be distributed to other neighbors, until an entire large farm of goats is created within the village.

Why goats? For starters, goats survive extremely harsh climates, reproduce easily, and their milk is full of essential vitamins and minerals. In Nepal, goats are also in high demand for their meat, which is considered a delicacy, especially among Hindu families that don’t eat other kinds of meat (like beef). Selling just one goat at the market can provide a few months of income for a family. In short, goats have the potential to be life-changing for families living in extreme poverty.

For Pumaya, receiving the two goats felt like a new beginning. Overjoyed at the sight of the trucks that brought in the goats, Pumaya now has a means to provide for herself after her husband’s passing. She committed fully to care for these goats and to participate in the village farm to raise and multiply these goats for market. With just two goats, dignified work brought meaning to her life, allowing Pumaya to feel like she was participating in a larger effort to lift her village out of poverty. Most importantly, she is experiencing the love of Christ through the believers in her midst: “These people just keep helping and giving, and they don’t expect anything in response,” she says. Pumaya knows she is being cared for by them, and with two goats in hand, she is feeling a strong sense of renewed hope for the future.

BRINGING HONOR TO A FORGOTTEN PEOPLE Our Mission ONE partner in North Africa has a long history of developing clinics in remote villages that allows them to build relationships and share the hope of Jesus Christ. After many prayerful years, they have decided to build a new dental clinic to meet the needs of the local community. Establishing the first-ever dental clinic in the remote village of Faya-Largeau in Chad, they will be able to share the hope of Christ and improve the dental health of future generations.

The village of Faya-Largeau seasonally hosts nomadic communities that pass through on the way through the Sahara Desert. This village is often forgotten by the outside world and unable to get the care they need. For years the people of Faya-Largeau have struggled to access essential health services and have few resources to offer the nomadic communities who move through their village. Opening an essential service in this community will bring honor to a forgotten people and glory to God as people receive treatment from the clinic rather than the village shaman.

Partnering with a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, new dental chairs have been donated and are making a long journey to Chad. Our Mission ONE Partner in North Africa has already secured a THE JUBILEE REPORT

plot of land from the local government to build the first dental clinic in the city. Soon they will begin to see clients on a regular basis, providing basic check-ups, cleanings, and extractions.

Residents like sixty-year-old Latifah, are finally receiving regular dental cleanings to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Latifah has visited another clinic set up by our partners in North Africa. After years of suffering toothaches, Latifah went to the clinic and got her infected tooth extracted to relieve the pain and prevent the infection from spreading throughout her body. For the first time, she and her neighbors are brushing their teeth, flossing, and reducing their sugar intake on a daily basis.

PLANNING FOR PEACE Mission ONE Partners in South Sudan have spent much of the last year caring for individual families in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Distributing health supplies, food rations, and spending time in prayer with grieving families.

But the pandemic is only the most recent crisis for South Sudan.

South Sudan’s civil war has been one of the largest humanitarian crises in the past decade – causing an estimated 400,000 lives lost, displacing more than four million people, and leaving 7.5 million people in need of urgent assistance. Born out of war and transitioning immediately into a civil war between battling tribes in the new government, South Sudan has an extreme poverty rate of 82%, according to the most recent estimates. The economy is in ruins, with a lack of job opportunities.

But Mission ONE Partners in South Sudan are part of a movement to bring peace to the region. Invited to the capital city of Juba, Mission ONE Partners in South Sudan attended the National Dialogue to commune with other peacemakers in formulating a plan. During the 2020 meeting, the congregants presented a solution to the government to seek terms of peace between warring factions. "We are grateful to God that we can be his representatives of peace. We are a people who seek reconciliation between all the tribes of South Sudan."

HIRA ROSE ABOVE Any challenge can feel impossible to rise above in moments of despair and difficulty. But almost all obstacles are can be overcome with hope and help.

Our partners in Pakistan recently shared this story: Hira is a young, divorced woman who suffers from polio which affects her ability to fully use her right hand. While she had an older sewing machine and knew sewing basics, because of her disability, she was not able to stitch the garments necessary to contribute to her family financially. Through her relationship with Mission ONE partners, she was able to receive a new sewing machine that is easier to use with her disability and will allow her to continue to make and sell garments.

On the surface, it would be easy for Hira to feel as if her hardships were insurmountable. Faced with a debilitating illness, divorced in a culture that doesn’t always support unaccompanied women, and struggling to do the work that brings in an income, many would give up under these circumstances. While the elements of this story may seem simple – after all, a major problem was solved with a single purchase – it’s worth examining all the ways God was at work.

In Hira’s story, it would seem all the odds were stacked against her. Facing any of her challenges would be emotionally, financially, and spiritually taxing. It would be understandable to many if she simply accepted her circumstances and allowed grief to overtake her. But she doesn’t. She pursues her skill for the sake of her family nonetheless.

The story doesn’t include how Hira came to the Mission ONE partners.

Perhaps she’s a member of the local church, or maybe she just heard there were people local to her that helped out those in need. Either way, she came to them willing to share her story and ask for assistance. No one can “do it all” alone. And while there are so many options for where to turn to when we’re in need (friends, family, church members), it’s always God at the core of this request. God guiding us to those who can help and God giving us the strength and humility to accept when we’ve taken things as far as we can on our own.

There are big hurdles at play for Hira that can’t necessarily be taken care of with one solution. But there was something that could be done. In order to make money, she needed to be able to sew and a more accommodating machine could do that for her.

Too often, we look at a laundry list of problems and shrink under the weight of all that needs solving. But big changes can come from a relatively small fix. The Mission ONE partners worked with Hira to find a way to make a meaningful impact with one manageable solution.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this story isn’t what Hira overcame, but rather what she was working toward. Her desire to contribute financially to her family for her brother’s education was beautiful and altruistic. It hits on a truth that recurs throughout the Gospel.

Acting out of service is the number one way to make this world more like the Kingdom. It would be understandable if all she wanted was for her own circumstances to improve, but she was thinking of others. When we operate from this place, problems tend to be resolved in a glorious fashion that only He can design.

The economy is in ruins, with a lack of job opportunities causing a deep depression that has turned many young people to drugs and alcohol.

After prayerful consideration of how to address these challenges, Mission ONE Partners in South Sudan will build and operate a technology center that will train young people in the tools they need and walk with them as they seek out productive means of employment to make a living.

SOUTH SUDAN | THE JUBILEE REPORT

Convinced that people must be given the tools they need to live out their Godgiven call to make a living, Mission ONE Partners in South Sudan are building a Technology Center in the capital city of Juba in South Sudan.

The building has two floors, each large enough to house 50 people and the technical equipment needed. The bottom floor will be used to train students in coding skills, English, and biblical studies.

Meanwhile, the second floor will serve as a coworking space where graduates will work with mentors to find online freelance jobs while paying a small rental fee to access the coworking space’s equipment. An environment of collaboration and support will be cultivated among coworkers.

As students graduate from the one-year training program, they will have two options: attempt to find work in the government with the help of mentors, or move upstairs to the coworking space.

The technology center will give young people a bright, new future by training them with practical skills to find well-paid, dignified work and lift themselves out of poverty. These people will be a source of hope for their families and communities, knowing that their hope is found in Jesus Christ alone.

Young adults like Benjamin, who grew up his entire life knowing war but not knowing where his next meal was coming from, will now have the opportunity to find a stable job. After going through the training program, he is better equipped to see how God designed him for good works, provide for his aging parents, and change the story of future generations.

The building construction is already underway and the team in South Sudan is preparing to open the Technology Center in October 2021.

OUR GOALS In the first year, 30 students will finish the technology center’s one-year training program and be given the opportunity to find work.

Instead of just showing up and going through the motions, we are asking students to own their own education. Many of our professors have shared that the engagement from the students is higher then ever before.

EDUCATION WITHOUT BOUNDARIES In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed our partners in India to establish Education Without Boundaries, a platform for students to take theology courses online, free of charge. Now, students like Kabir, who lives in a small village in northern India, can deepen his knowledge of the Bible and play a larger role in his local faith community — all without needing to forfeit his job or leave his home. As education opportunities grow and expand, Education Without Boundaries will also add additional classes and implement a business model that allows the platform to achieve financial sustainability.

Courses are currently offered free of charge to any students who are interested in deepening their theological education; only students who want to engage with professors and secure an official degree certificate need to pay. In order to sustain this model and offset the cost of non-paying students, the program will need to expand to enroll additional students. There will also need to be more staff to help record lectures, edit

videos, build out curriculums, and help publicize the institute to attract these new students.

Mission ONE partners in India have always equipped students with a Biblical foundation to become transformational leaders who can disciple others and carry out the Great Commission. Through this new online platform, Education Without Boundaries, our partners in India hope to train thousands of unreached students across India so they can grow in Christ and live out their God-given callings.

EDUCATE THE GIRLS, CHANGE THE WORLD Women are some of the world's greatest untapped resources. Though they represent over half of the global population, they account for two-thirds of the world's poorest citizens and two-thirds of the world's illiterate population. In the remote Pokot district of Kenya, girls have been neglected, overlooked, and forced into marriage at an early age. Born into patriarchal societies, they are unable to make decisions within their own families and subject to the control of their husbands. For many girls, school is not an option. Whether due to access issues in the remote area or not having the money to travel to schools further away, many drop out during their primary school years.

Educating women is the best way to tackle gender inequality and discrimination. When girls stay in school and finish secondary education, they are able to flourish: living longer lives, earning higher wages, marrying at a later age, and having fewer, healthier children. Building an all-girls school in Pokot will be a big step to giving them a future outside of gender violence,

Lessi Kpodar grew up in a community where Mission ONE partners in West Africa were highly active. When Lessi was still young, her father passed away and the church community supported her and her mother. Today she is a college graduate with a promising career. She credits her success to the support and care of the local Mission ONE partners who have invested in her and her mother over the years.

Now Lessi wants to reinvest in her community.

A THRIVING PIG FARM IS CHANGING THE FUTURE OF KIJABE TOWN With a population of 5,000 people, Kijabe Town is relatively small with few viable income opportunities and even fewer educational resources. Many families live in poverty due to a lack of opportunity, and many feel hopeless. These desperate circumstances have led parents to send their children to school outside the community where better education and opportunities are available. Sadly, these children don’t often return to Kijabe Town. The families who stay are stuck in a cycle of poverty and trapped in their old ways of life. In fact, the younger generation is the largest untapped resource for unlocking a new future for Kijabe Town, able to bring their skills and talents to transform their community.

In order to break the string of departures, Mission ONE Partners in Kenya have started a pig farm that aims to jumpstart new hope in Kijabe Town by providing an income opportunity. The pig project will show the community that it’s possible to rise out of poverty and live a good life in Kijabe Town, without leaving or depending on external help.

We want to change the perception of Kijabe Town as a place with no economic opportunities by allowing the community to take ownership of their own future. Pigs are a great livelihood project as they provide families with a sustainable source of income.

Their manure can be used to fertilize farms and gardens, while piglets can be bred or sold at the market.

The pig farm is already beginning to shift perceptions and currently employs three individuals. Together, they have begun breeding sows and problem-solving to make the pig farm profitable, such as looking into creative ways to reduce the cost of or procure local restaurant food waste as pig feed.

The pig farm is thriving and Mission ONE partners in Kenya have already begun negotiating a contract with Farmer’s Choice, the largest pig meat supplier in Kenya. Currently, they’re willing to sign a contract and purchase a minimum of 25 pigs a month, at the cost of $160 per pig.

Farmer’s Choice is also willing to buy more when the project expands. As the demand is there, the hope is that in a year, the project will be able to employ more people, supply a greater number of pigs, and eventually train some workers on how to start their own businesses.

The goal of the pig farm project is to show community members that they and their children are the solution to their own challenges. Starting a virtuous cycle in which graduates can come back after finishing their studies and contribute to their community – as doctors, teachers, engineers, pastors, and business owners – is the greatest impact the farm can have. Ultimately, Mission ONE wishes to ignite hope in the people of Kijabe Town and see it flourish.

THE ROAD TO LOCALLY SUSTAINED MISSIONARY SUPPORT Mission ONE Partners in East Africa are addressing physical and spiritual poverty in the four African countries of Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Uganda. Through their team of 25+ missionaries, they focus on empowering communities through their work in education, health, and church development.

A majority of their missionaries minister to families in small villages that rely on them for immediate needs, such as providing for their daily meals or helping orphans buy food and clothing. In addition to these daily needs, many of the missionaries have expressed a desire to start small projects that can bring in an income for their families; however, they historically haven’t had these systems in place nor the financial capital to do so.

The Murecars car rental project would support the work of these missionaries and alleviate some financial concerns that hinder them from further serving the most vulnerable in their local contexts.

The Murecars car rental project will financially support the work of Mission ONE Partners in East Africa, in order to see communities transformed and the gospel expanded.

Starting with purchasing and registering three vehicles, over time, these cars will be rented to the staff of other nongovernmental organizations, businesspeople, and tourists.

Sammy, a missionary with our partners in East Africa, plans to oversee the project and wants to give back to the community with the knowledge he’s gained after graduating from business school. Recently, he helped a friend start a rental car company, which showed him the need for rental car companies that are trustworthy and have cars that don’t break down.

“Whenever I am going through my own issues and I lose hope, I always cling to what I have seen the community do and it makes me feel silly for feeling hopeless for my little problems. I want to start Murecars to give more opportunities to transform as many communities as they can.” He hopes to start renting out cars with Murecars in early summer 2021.

RELIEF FOR WEARY FAMILIES Ever since the civil war ended in 1990, Lebanon has been experiencing a country-wide economic crisis exacerbated by government corruption and accumulating debt — 150% of the country’s national output. In 2020, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the explosion in Beirut, more than half of Lebanon’s population has fallen into poverty, and food prices have soared more than 400% while the nation’s currency has lost about 90% of its value. As a result, many families have adjusted to eating only one meal a day, hungry as the country hangs by a thread socially, economically, and physically.

Mission ONE’s partner in the Middle East is working alongside families to provide for their basic needs, including supplying food rations.

Parents like Newel, a single mom in Beirut, can now feed her family and focus instead on addressing the economic impacts of the pandemic, rebuilding her home, and keeping her children in school. Newel no longer has to worry about where her next meal will come from, giving her the energy to imagine a new future rather than just living day by day. Through these food distributions, hundreds of families will be fed. But more than that, they will know the love of Jesus because the local church is providing for them..

Many Christians divide the concepts of theology and God's mission for the church. The lack of synthesis creates unrealistic theology and simplistic mission strategies. But the Bible is not a book of abstract ideas removed from reality. Our mission is done poorly and causes harm if we do not understand the Bible well enough to adapt its message to other contexts.

In an attempt to create discussions that bring theology and missions together, Mission ONE is launching a new podcast.

Mission ONE’s podcast series “Doing Theology.

Thinking Mission.” will be co-hosted by Jackson Wu, Mission ONE’s Theologian-in-Residence, and Werner Mischke, Mission ONE Vice President. With at least two seasons annually, each will spotlight a distinct theme that reflects a current topic within society or the church relating to this intersection of theology and missiology.

Every season of the podcast will have 12-14 episodes, about half of which will feature expert interviews and the other half conversational episodes between the hosts. In addition, every episode—professionally produced by a sound engineer—is designed to be content-rich, full of resource recommendations for books or articles that will help listeners dive deeper.

Currently, there is no existing podcast series exploring this unique link. By demonstrating synthesized thinking, theologians and ministry practitioners alike will be equipped to reflect on matters in ways that are more biblically faithful and culturally meaningful. CHANGING THE WAY THE WORLD LEARNS THEOLOGY

At Mission ONE, we believe that teaching people to contextualize biblical truth for their extended community removes unnecessary cultural barriers to the hope found in Jesus Christ. We also believe theological education should be available to any student, pastor, or evangelist — no matter where they live in the world.

This is why the Missional Theology Initiative (MTI) was born.

MTI seeks to provide a contextualized theological curriculum with the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in Missional Theology. This hybrid, ready-made program is being created for and will be led by the global church. It will give access to theological teaching that is meaningful for students across an array of cultural contexts.

MTI will change the way the world learns theology.

The Missional Theology Initiative (MTI) will begin offering classes in 2023. Within the first few years of operations, MTI seeks to teach hundreds of students with the eventual goal of reaching thousands of students living and serving in different continents and communities within a decade. Typical MTI students will take a minimum of four, 3-credit courses and graduate with a Master of Arts in Missional Theology after six semesters.

RESTORING HEALTH AND HOPE TO COMMUNITIES IN INDIA India has seen a surging second wave of COVID-19 infections, with hundreds of thousands of new cases and more than 4,000 deaths a day, as of May 2021. The volume of cases is overwhelming healthcare systems, with hospitals and clinics running out of beds, oxygen, and medicine. Across India, there is an atmosphere of panic and heartbreak as many families watch loved ones succumb to the virus. Since the start of the pandemic, India has tracked more than 27 million cases of the coronavirus — though many public health experts believe this number could be even bigger.

COVID-19’s devastation in India is of overwhelming magnitude. To tackle the ramifications of the crisis, Mission ONE and its partner are activating their network of churches across India to care for their local communities, bringing about tangible, large-scale relief.

Mission ONE and its partner in India are assisting families with limited access to healthcare by establishing makeshift care facilities with oxygen, medical care, and isolation and recovery units. To build immunity, they are also helping distribute COVID-19 vaccines and providing transportation to vaccination sites.

For families that have loved ones who are suffering or have passed away from COVID-19, the local church has also established a prayer helpline so anyone can call in to talk to someone in a safe, attentive environment. In addition to grief and trauma counseling, they are also caring for children whose parents have contracted COVID-19.

Finally, to further prevent infections from the coronavirus, partners are also assembling and distributing food, water, and preventive care packages filled with masks, sanitizer, thermometers, soap, supplements, and other items. Ultimately, the plan aims to be holistic, addressing preventative, curative, supportive, and redemptive care aspects of the COVID-19 surge.

Mission ONE’s goal is to help restore health and hope to communities in India as the country perseveres through this second wave. Although the impacts of the pandemic are far-reaching, this is a critical moment for the local church to be God’s vessel to serve these communities. Our desire is that God would be glorified and that new believers would come to faith through the loving care they receive.
