ท�ำความรู้จักกับการสอบ TOEFL iBT ส่วนการเขียน (Introduction)

การสอบ TOEFL ® ระบบอินเทอร์เน็ต (Internet-based Test - iBT) ในส่วนการเขียนนั้นแบ่งออก เป็น 2 ส่วนย่อยคือ ส่วนเรียงความแบบบูรณาการ (Integrated Task) และส่วนเรียงความแบบเน้น ทักษะการเขียนเพียงอย่างเดียว (Independent Task) โดยมีรายละเอียดดังต่อไปนี้

ส่วนเรียงความแบบบูรณาการ (Integrated Task)

ในส่วนนี้ประกอบไปด้วยบทอ่านทางวิชาการความยาว 250-300 ค�ำ ตามด้วยการบรรยายหรือ การอภิปรายในหัวข้อเดียวกับบทอ่านความยาว 2 นาที จากนั้นผู้เข้าสอบจะเห็นค�ำถามที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ หัวข้อดังกล่าว โดยต้องเขียนสรุปประเด็นส�ำคัญที่ได้จากการฟัง แล้วอธิบายว่าประเด็นต่างๆ เหล่านี้ เกีย่ วข้องกับประเด็นทีอ่ ยู่ในบทอ่านอย่างไร ความยาวของบทสรุปที่ตอ้ งเขียนอยู่ระหว่าง 150-225 ค�ำ ซึ่งผู้เข้าสอบอาจเขียนยาวกว่านี้ก็ได้หากมีเวลาเหลือ

ส่วนเรียงความแบบเน้นทักษะการเขียนเพียงอย่างเดียว (Independent Task)

ในส่วนนี้เป็นการถามความคิดเห็นในหัวข้อใดหัวข้อหนึ่ง โดยผู้เข้าสอบต้องใช้ประสบการณ์และ ความรู้เฉพาะตัวมาเขียนเป็นเรียงความเพื่อตอบค�ำถามที่ก�ำหนดให้ ซึ่งต้องมีความยาวอย่างน้อย 300 ค�ำ ผู้เข้าสอบอาจเขียนยาวกว่านี้ก็ได้หากมีเวลาเหลือ ผูเ้ ข้าสอบมีเวลาเขียนเรียงความทัง้ 2 เรือ่ งรวมกัน 50 นาที โดยแบ่งเป็นส่วนของ Integrated Task 20 นาที และส่วนของ Independent Task อีก 30 นาที เรียงความทั้ง 2 เรื่องห้ามเขียนลงบนกระดาษ กล่าวคือต้องพิมพ์ลงคอมพิวเตอร์เท่านั้น จากนั้นจะมีคณะกรรมการ 2 คนหรือมากกว่านั้นตรวจให้ คะแนนของเรียงความจะผ่านเครือข่ายการวัดผลคะแนนออนไลน์ (Online Score Network) ขององค์กร ETS โดยเรียงความแต่ละเรื่องจะได้คะแนนตั้งแต่ 0-5 คะแนน

วิธีใช้หนังสือเล่มนี้ ในการเขียนเรียงความนั้นประกอบไปด้วย 3 ขั้นตอน คือ การวางแผน การลงมือเขียน และ การทบทวน โดยหนังสือเล่มนี้จะชี้แนะแนวทางง่ายๆ พร้อมให้ตัวอย่างในการปฏิบัติตามขั้นตอน ทั้งสามดังกล่าวอย่างเป็นล�ำดับ เพื่อให้สามารถน�ำไปประยุกต์ ใช้ในการตอบข้อสอบทั้งในส่วนของ Integrated Task และส่วนของ Independent Task ได้

ค�ำเตือน

ขอให้ตั้งใจศึกษา แนวค�ำตอบ โดยใช้การวิเคราะห์ ไม่ใช่การท่องจ�ำ โปรดระลึกไว้ว่า ค�ำตอบของคุณจะ ไม่ได้คะแนนหากมี ส่วนที่ตรงกับ เรียงความในหนังสือ เล่มนี้ งานเขียน ของคุณในการสอบ TOEFL iBT นั้น จะต้องเป็นงานเขียน ของคุณเองโดย ไม่ได้ลอกเลียน มาจากที่ใด

คุณมีเวลาวางแผน ลงมือเขียน และทบทวนเรียงความในส่วน Integrated Task ทั้งหมด 20 นาที และวางแผน ลงมือเขียน และทบทวนเรียงความในส่วนของ Independent Task อีก 30 นาที ในช่วง เวลาอันจ�ำกัดเช่นนี้ คุณต้องเขียนเรียงความที่ชัดเจน สอดคล้องเป็นเหตุเป็นผล และถูกต้อง ซึ่งคู่มือ เล่มนี้จะเป็นผู้ช่วยของคุณในเรื่องนี้ ตามที่ได้กล่าวไปแล้วว่า ขัน้ ตอนแรกของการเขียนเรียงความคือ การวางแผน ซึง่ ประเด็นนีจ้ ะต้อง น�ำไปใช้ในการเตรียมตัวของคุณด้วย กล่าวคือ คุณต้องมีการวางแผนการศึกษา โดยหนังสือเล่มนีจ้ ะน�ำ เสนอแผนการศึกษาเพื่อเตรียมสอบ TOEFL iBT ในส่วนการเขียน เมื่อคุณเริ่มศึกษาเนื้อหาแต่ละบท ในเล่มไล่ไปเป็นล�ำดับและลงมือท�ำแบบฝึกหัดให้ครบถ้วน คุณก็จะได้เรียนรูว้ ธิ กี ารเขียนเรียงความตาม ขั้นตอนทั้งสามที่กล่าวไปแล้ว รวมทั้งมีโอกาสมากมายที่จะได้ฝึกเขียน นอกจากนั้นคุณยังได้ฝึกทักษะ การเขียนที่สามารถน�ำไปประยุกต์ใช้ในการตอบข้อสอบทั้งในส่วนของ Integrated Task และส่วนของ Independent Task และในการเขียนเรียงความโดยทั่วไปอีกด้วย ในส่วนของขั้นตอนที่สองคือ การเขียน วิธีการศึกษาที่ดีที่สุดก็คือการลงมือเขียนจริงนั่นเอง ใน หนังสือเล่มนี้มีแบบฝึกหัดและแนวข้อสอบมากมายเพื่อให้คุณฝึกเขียนได้อย่างเต็มที่ และถ้าต้องการ ฝึกฝนเพิ่มเติม ก็สามารถเลือกหัวข้อจากตัวอย่างเรียงความในส่วน Integrated Task และในส่วน Independent Task ที่อยู่ด้านหลังของหนังสือเล่มนี้ได้ ในระหว่างทีศ่ กึ ษาวิธกี ารเขียน คุณต้องเรียนรูว้ ธิ กี ารทบทวนไปด้วย โดยต้องหมัน่ ทบทวนเรียงความที่ เขียนจากแบบฝึกหัดของหนังสือเล่มนี้ให้เป็นนิสยั ในกระบวนการเขียนทัง้ หมดนัน้ ขัน้ ตอนการทบทวน มีความส�ำคัญเท่ากันกับขั้นตอนการลงมือเขียนเลยทีเดียว การเขียนเรียงความที่ดีเป็นเรื่องที่ต้องอาศัยเวลา กล่าวคือ เวลาในการวางแผน เวลาในการ ลงมือเขียน และเวลาในการทบทวน อย่าลืมว่าในการเขียนเรียงความของการสอบ TOEFL iBT นั้น คุณมีเวลาจ�ำกัด ดังนัน้ หากเริม่ ศึกษาเรือ่ งการเขียนตัง้ แต่ตอนนี้ เมือ่ ถึงเวลาสอบจริงย่อมสามารถเขียน ได้อย่างง่ายดายภายใต้เวลาอันจ�ำกัด

ไขข้อข้องใจ มีเวลาท�ำข้อสอบในส่วนการเขียนแต่ละส่วนมากแค่ไหน

ในส่วนของ Integrated Task จะมีเวลาให้อ่านเนื้อเรื่อง 3 นาที เสร็จแล้วจะเป็นการฟังบรรยาย หลังจากนั้นจะมีเวลาอีก 20 นาทีในการวางแผนและลงมือเขียนเรียงความ ในส่วนของ Independent Task จะมีเวลา 30 นาทีในการวางแผนและลงมือเขียนเรียงความตามหัวข้อที่ให้มา

จ�ำเป็นต้องใช้คอมพิวเตอร์หรือไม่

จ�ำเป็นต้องใช้เพราะเป็นการสอบผ่านระบบอินเทอร์เน็ต ดังนั้นควรฝึกใช้คีย์บอร์ดในรูปแบบ QWERTY ซึง่ ก็คอื รูปแบบมาตรฐานโดยเรียกตามอักษร 6 ตัวแรกทีเ่ รียงกันบนแถวบนสุดของคียบ์ อร์ด

เลือกหัวข้อที่จะเขียนได้หรือไม่

ไม่ได้ ในข้อสอบส่วน Integrated Task คุณต้องตอบค�ำถามโดยอาศัยข้อมูลจากบทอ่านและการฟัง บรรยายที่ก�ำหนดให้ และในส่วน Independent Task คุณต้องเขียนเรียงความจากหัวข้อที่ให้มา โดย จะมีเพียงหนึ่งหัวข้อเท่านั้น

ผู้เข้าสอบทุกคนจะได้หัวข้อเดียวกันหรือไม่ ไม่ใช่ ผู้เข้าสอบจะได้หัวข้อแตกต่างกันไป

ถ้าคุณศึกษาจากคู่มือเล่มนี้ เรื่องนี้จะไม่เป็นปัญหาส�ำหรับคุณเลย เพราะคุณจะเข้าใจหัวข้อที่อาจ จะน�ำมาเป็นข้อสอบได้ทั้งหมด ในวันสอบจริงนั้นคุณจะไม่ได้รับการช่วยเหลือใดๆ หากคุณอ่านหัวข้อ แล้วไม่เข้าใจ

ถ้าใช้งานคอมพิวเตอร์ไม่ได้จะท�ำอย่างไร

ในห้องสอบจะมีเจ้าหน้าที่คอยตอบค�ำถามเกี่ยวกับการใช้งานคอมพิวเตอร์ แต่จะไม่ตอบค�ำถาม ใดๆ เกี่ยวกับภาษาอังกฤษ

ควรน�ำดินสอแบบใดไปสอบ

คุณไม่จ�ำเป็นต้องน�ำดินสอแบบใดไปเลย เพราะทางศูนย์สอบจะเตรียมอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้ในการเขียน ทุกอย่างไว้ให้แล้ว หากต้องการดินสอหรือกระดาษเพิ่มให้แจ้งเจ้าหน้าที่

น�ำนาฬิกาไปด้วยได้หรือไม่

ไม่ได้ ผู้เข้าสอบไม่ได้รับอนุญาตให้น�ำสิ่งของใดๆ เข้าไปในห้องสอบ แต่สามารถสวมนาฬิกา ข้อมือได้ หรืออาจตรวจดูเวลาจากนาฬิกาบนหน้าจอคอมพิวเตอร์

น�ำพจนานุกรมไปด้วยได้หรือไม่

ไม่ได้ ผู้เข้าสอบไม่ได้รับอนุญาตให้น�ำสิ่งของใดๆ เข้าไปในห้องสอบ

น�ำกระดาษไปด้วยได้หรือไม่

บันทึกที่จดไว้จะน�ำไปท�ำอย่างไร

ผู้เข้าสอบสามารถจดบันทึกเป็นภาษาอังกฤษหรือภาษาแม่ของตนเองก็ได้ เมื่อการสอบเสร็จสิ้น แล้ว บันทึกจะถูกเก็บและน�ำไปท�ำลาย โดยคณะกรรมการตรวจข้อสอบจะไม่เห็นบันทึกเหล่านี้

You can use passages from reading texts, newspapers, magazines, and other sources that are available and are of interest to the students. Encourage the students to read often and to make notes on what they read. Students can bring their notes to class to share with their classmates.

This book provides many opportunities for practice writing summaries of reading passages and lectures. Again, you can provide additional practice by having the students write summaries of things they have read or news stories they have listened to.

While working on Step 3, students can practice revising by checking each other’s work, looking at the development, organization, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. In order to plan their responses to the writing topics, students need to be able to formulate opinions on these topics. They must get used to thinking about and describing reasons and advantages or disadvantages. In small groups, students can brainstorm and discuss their ideas on the writing topics presented throughout the book and in the Appendix. Students can then practice writing thesis statements and developing concept maps on the same subjects.

When the class is working on Steps 2 and 3, have the students check each other’s essays to make sure there is a topic sentence in each paragraph and that both the theme and all the supporting points are mentioned in the introduction. Have the students identify in a model essay the theme and supporting points in the introduction, topic sentences in the body of the essay, and the summarized theme in the conclusion.

Scientists work to genetically modify crops for various reasons. Sometimes the goal may be to develop a crop that is resistant to disease or pesticides.

Another goal is to develop vegetables that have a longer shelf life. Or, the purpose may be to develop a more nutritious form of a food plant. An example of the latter is golden rice. It was developed by scientists in Europe. They took ordinary rice and inserted genes from the yellow flower called daffodil, as well as from a bacterium. This gave the rice the golden color from which it gets its name. More to the point, however, it added vitamin A, a nutrient that rice does not normally have.

Vitamin A deficiency is a serious problem in many parts of the world.

Vitamin A deficiency can lead to blindness, compromised immunity, susceptibility to infection, and premature death. Children are especially affected by lack of this vitamin. According to the World Health Organization, hundreds of thousands of children go blind every year because of Vitamin A deficiency.

Adding vitamin A to rice, which is a staple food in many of the areas where malnutrition is common, can be an efficient way to address the problem.

Consumption of a varied diet would of course, be the most desirable way to address nutritional needs. A number of vegetables, such as carrots and pumpkins, contain high amounts of vitamin A and could address this vitamin deficiency. However, because of tradition, economic considerations, and other issues, it is often not possible to pursue this type of solution. By introducing golden rice into areas where rice is already consumed on a daily basis, researchers hope to provide a source of this vitamin that will become part of the normal diet.

Learning styles have been described in different ways. People may be described as auditory learners, who learn best by listening; visual learners, who learn best by seeing; or kinesthetic learners, who learn best by doing. Another system sees some people as active learners who process new information by doing something with it or using it in some way. Other learners are seen as reflective, preferring to process new information by thinking about it rather than by using it. Similarly, learners might be described as either sequential or global. Sequential learners see new information in logically connected steps, whereas global learners understand things better by looking at the whole picture rather than focusing on the parts.

Understanding learning styles can improve study skills. Sequential learners, for example, can make a habit of outlining new information.

Auditory learners can form study groups so that they can talk with others about the topics they are learning. Reflective learners can find ways to reflect on what they have learned, by asking themselves questions about the material, for example, or by writing summaries.

Chapter 2

Professors and trainers who understand the different types of learning styles can take them into account when designing their courses. By incorporating a variety of types of activities into their teaching, professors and trainers have a better chance of reaching all their students and improving the learning experience for everyone.

solution. For one thing, there are topics that have to be presented in certain ways, no matter what the learning styles of the students may be.

Mathematics, for example, needs to be taught in a logical, patterned way.

It is also true that many students simply aren’t interested in finding out about their learning style. They don’t want to spend time reflecting on how they learn and then applying this to their study habits. They don’t see a value in it. Instructors, too, aren’t necessarily interested. In fact, many instructors tend to teach the way they themselves were taught. Or they present information in the way they understand it, according to their own style, with the assumption that everyone learns the way they do. So, while the research may provide us with some interesting information and food for thought, applying the results to real-life situations can be problematic.

Many people agree that the most important invention of the late twentieth century was the cell phone. Cell phones have now become a regular part of daily life. Cell phones have made many things much more convenient, but they have also brought new dangers to our lives.

Cell phone use has risen dramatically everywhere over the past several years. In the United States alone, just fifteen years ago, there were 4.3 million cell phone users. Today more than 224 million people use cell phones in this country. Everywhere we go—restaurants, stores, buses, parks, offices, schools—people are talking on their cell phones.

Cell phones have made many things more convenient for people, but they have also raised some serious safety concerns, most notably for drivers. Talking on the phone distracts the driver’s attention from the road, and cell phones have been blamed for many traffic accidents. In several cases, drivers in accidents involving cell phones have been successfully sued by the victims. Employers have also been held liable for accidents involving cell phones and caused by their employees.

In response to such concerns, laws have been passed restricting cell phone use while driving. In some places, talking on the phone while driving is completely prohibited. In other places, use of a headset is required. Some places allow talking on the phone while driving but fine drivers responsible for crashes involving phones. In other places, drivers may lose their automobile insurance if they were talking on the phone when involved in an accident. In as many as 40 countries around the world, there are laws restricting or prohibiting the use of cell phones while driving.

Essay Topic 95 Some people think governments should spend as much money as possible exploring outer space (for example, traveling to the moon and to other planets). Other people disagree and think governments should spend this money for our basic needs on Earth. Which of these two opinions do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

THESIS STATEMENT A The moon is a better place to explore because it is nearer than the planets.

This thesis statement is NOT a good thesis statement for this topic. It takes two of the words from the topic and writes about exploration possibilities. The topic, though, is how best to spend limited resources: on space exploration or on needs on Earth. This thesis statement is off topic.

THESIS STATEMENT B While there is still hunger, poverty, and illiteracy on Earth, our resources should be focused here and not in outer space.

From this statement, we can presume the writer will discuss why hunger, poverty, and illiteracy on earth are more worthy of attention than space exploration.

THESIS STATEMENT C Gaining psychological and scientific knowledge through space exploration will benefit us more than trying to solve problems here on Earth.

Model Test 1—Integrated Task

The presence of technology in schools has greatly increased over the past two decades. More and more classrooms are equipped with computers and wireless technology, with the aim of boosting academic achievement. How far has technology gone toward reaching this goal?

The perceived benefits of classroom technology are several.

According to many educators, one of the greatest advantages is that it provides a variety of learning tools, making it easy to address different learning styles. It allows students to experience a topic in verbal, written, spatial, quantitative, and graphical ways. Students can take in and use information in the ways that make most sense to them. Technology also helps teachers expand the boundaries of the classroom. Through use of the Internet, students can connect with people and ideas anywhere in the world.

In order to receive these benefits, however, technology must actually be used. Surveys have found that only a low percentage of teachers use technology on a regular basis, and that as many as half of all teachers never use it at all. Many teachers who do use technology do not use it to its fullest advantage. Rather, the tendency is to use computers to do the same things that can be done with pencil and paper.

Studies have shown that, properly used, technology does boost academic achievement. It has also been shown that teacher training can make the difference. In one study, teachers who received training in classroom use of technology used it regularly and used it in ways that developed higher-order thinking skills in their students.

This study also showed that students in these classrooms scored higher on math tests than their peers in other classrooms. School systems, therefore, need to focus on training teachers in addition to equipping classrooms with computers.

Warning Study the models carefully. Analyze them completely. Do NOT memorize them. Your writing will not be scored if it matches an essay in this book. Your writing on the TOEFL iBT must be your OWN original work.
