About mirus mirus is a not-for-profit organisation who support people to lead fulfilled and happy lives.

At mirus, we support people to think about how they want their life to be, what their goals are, and what they like to do. Then we work with them to make it happen.

We make sure that people have choice and control in what they do, how they are supported and how they contribute to the communities they are part of.

Our Respite services work in the same way.

We get to know each individual who stays with us, so that we can provide a memorable and fulfilling break away from home.

Time out, the way you want it We understand how important it is that both you and the person who cares for you can have a good break.

So, while you’re with us we’ll take care of everything. From your medication and daily care, ensuring that you can attend your usual clubs, classes and groups, and planning new activities and trying exciting new things.

There are lots of options for how you spend your time with us; whether you’re looking for

a home from home, the opportunity to meet new people and gain new experiences, or a holiday away from your usual routine, we have the perfect stay for you.

We also offer unplanned stays and short term support to help you and your family during unexpected life events.

Whichever type of stay you choose, we’ll make sure that you have a fun, carefree and memorable break.

Your break, your way Staying close to home We have two comfortable and inviting houses in Cardiff that are perfect for a short break.

You’ll stay in your own private bedroom and enjoy spending time in communal spaces with the friends you make during your stay.

You’ll still be able to attend all of your usual activities, as well as get involved in a wide range of new ones that you choose.

This option is perfect for those who want to trial more independent, shared living in a safe and supportive environment.

Emergency stays To remove some of the stress from unexpected life events, we may be able to offer emergency unplanned stays in our Respite houses.

Skills workshops Whether you want to learn new skills, or improve the skills you already have, our

workshops can help you increase your independence and knowledge. Workshops are held in our Respite houses in Cardiff, and are centred around independent living skills, cooking and baking, and IT skills and online shopping.

Holidays away If you’re looking to go a bit further afield, we can support you to go on holiday in the UK. Whether you choose to go away with the person who usually cares for you, or with friends, we will take care of all of your care and support needs while you focus on relaxing, having fun, and making memories.

Holidays away from our Respite houses take a little more planning, but we can help you and the person who cares for you to design your perfect trip.

We also have some great suggestions of accessible places that we’ve used before and have been given the thumbs up by the people who have stayed.

Making friends We all love spending time with people we have fun with. That’s why we learn as much about you, your personality, interests and the things you like doing before you spend time at mirus Respite.

Because we will get to really know you, we can match you with people who we think you will make great friends with during your stay.

Many people who we’ve matched choose to plan their stays around when their friends are staying too, and even plan holidays together.

Our social and friendship group meets three times a week to do activities such as walking, having meals out, bowling and going to the cinema. We can introduce you to this friendly group, and you can meet up with them even when you’re not staying in Respite.

Future planning We plan each stay around your needs, aspirations and goals, and take every opportunity to work towards building independent living skills.

If you’re preparing to move from your family home to more independent living we can support you to build your skills, knowledge and social network to help you make your move as smooth as possible.

We offer workshops in our two Respite houses in Cardiff, which focus on developing your skills such as cooking and baking, IT and online shopping, and essential skills around the home. We will also support you to learn day to day skills throughout your stay.

We will use everything that we’ve learned about you to find exciting activities in the local community for you to try. During these activities you will meet lots of people, learn new skills and maybe even develop new interests and hobbies.

Our staff Our staff are friendly, dedicated and knowledgeable and will get to know you and the people who care for you.

There will always be a staff member on hand to support you, and they are always happy to answer any questions that you may have.

The manager of our Respite service is a Registered Manager, and the support staff are registered and qualified Social Care Workers.

Staying close Our mirus Respite houses in Cardiff have everything you need for a fantastic stay away from home.

Each house has large, welcoming community spaces for you to spend time chatting, playing games and watching TV with your friends.

The large, shady gardens are accessible, and provide extra space to host barbecues and parties, or relax in the fresh air during the summer months.

We often hold events that are open to others who stay at mirus Respite, and they are a great opportunity to meet and get to know even more people in the community.

Each numbered bedroom has it’s own lockable door with a door knocker, to give you privacy when you need it. There are in-room TVs for when you’d like to relax and unwind in your own space.

Our roomy ground floor, accessible wet room will provide you with the perfect place to get ready for a fun-filled day.

Referrals Cardiff City Council commission mirus to provide allocated short stays at our two houses in Cardiff, which are both registered care homes with CIW. The Respite service is for people who live with full time carers (parents, family members and adult placement schemes) who meet Cardiff’s eligibility criteria, which is: • they have a registered learning disability • they are known to the Cardiff community support team • they reside within the Cardiff area To find out more about staying with mirus, please get in touch with Cardiff Local Authority Adults Learning Disability Team.
