Mirman School 2019-2020 Annual Report

Mirman School

A NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

In these extraordinary times (and no, unfortunately I’m not invoking that superlative in a positive sense), we’ve all experienced our share of heartache and loss. Some of that is more existential and, in the grand scheme of things, fleeting — some of it is irreversible and reverberating. But now more than ever, find that it’s important to remember that strife can make us stronger, too.

For every story we’ve seen about setbacks, there are other important tales to tell. On the personal level, even something as seemingly minor as a quick check-in with a friend can do the heavy lifting of turning someone’s day around. On the macro level, it might look like our community banding together to donate actual SUV-loads of food to local families in need, or our students spending their free time spinning up 3D-printed PPE for healthcare workers.

Or, and here I come to the crux of this particular publication, our Annual Report, there are the stories that can be told thanks to the generosity of time, spirit, and resources of the hundreds of donors mentioned in the coming pages. And though we celebrate the 2019-2020 school year specifically in this issue, it’s worth noting that these stories are open-ended, they continue to be written in this current school year and beyond, as every single student and program on Mirman’s campus (virtual or not) benefits from the Annual Fund.

So thank you, Mirman community, for being a prime example of hope in a world of uncertainty. For me, this hope is only magnified by the day as see all the large and small ways that we are continuing to come together to make the most of this year, our connections, and ultimately, our world. And thank you, as always, for this uplifting reminder of all the good we have and will continue to accomplish together.

Respectfully,

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The 2019-2020 school year was a memorable one, for many reasons — some of them good, some of them not so much. While I’m pretty sure that we’re all on the same page about the latter, wanted to emphasize some of the good news. We (the local we and the more global we) have come together in many heartwarming ways throughout the pandemic, but there’s one joint project in particular that deserves a bold-print mention.

In the midst of a global crisis, and in the context of all the other very real, very urgent priorities weighing on each of us, our parent community came together to end last year’s annual giving campaign at 100% participation.

We say it each year, and we mean it equally each time: your participation matters. More than any single donation or dollar amount, the collective strength and leadership that is on display here can’t be overstated. When an entire school comes together in support of the mission of serving the very specific needs of our children, even as anxiety and fear circles around us in no small amount, that says something about the stuff we’re made of. That says something about what’s important to us. From generous tuition assistance for students in need to support for ongoing professional development as our intrepid faculty continues to carve their niche in a virtual world, there is so much work being done, all being made possible by every single family currently involved in this institution.

This kind of support makes it easier to navigate a tricky fiscal year, to be sure. But as we move into the future, it is clear that your leadership will be what lights the path we’re still very much intent on walking. We also have taken time in this publication to celebrate our leadership donors to date for the Mirman Next campaign, which is still moving on schedule and is nearing a public launch. Especially in uncertain times like these, am hopeful when thinking of the decades of future Mirman students this project will serve. The more we invest in institutions like Mirman — which works to cultivate thoughtful, empathetic, and resilient problem-solvers — the more we contribute to a better future for all. And while technically a separate endeavor, none of that dream would or will be possible without a robust Annual Fund. For your time, your talent, your treasure, but most of all, your commitment — I thank you.

why we give

Every year we ask the Mirman community to support our mission and without fail, the community rises to the occasion. No matter how you show your support, or the size of your gift, we are so grateful for your generosity. Whether you are a current family, past family, alumni, grandparent, member of our Board of Trustees, faculty or staff member, your support of our school and mission is valued and appreciated. Here, some members of our community share their inspiring reasons for why they give to Mirman School. You can watch the complete video here.

annual giving statistics

In the 2019-2020 school year, Mirman School achieved an industry-leading 100% participation rate for families and our Board of Trustees, with 96% of employees also contributing to the Annual Giving campaign. Through the work of our dedicated volunteers and the support of our community, Mirman School is able to uphold the vision of our

founders and achieve our unique mission and goals. In addition to the aforementioned constituencies, a number of additional groups gave generously to our Annual Fund. Mirman School greatly appreciates the generosity of the parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, employees, Trustees, and friends who devoted their time, effort, and resources to the school.

areas of support volunteers & leadership

During the 2019-2020 school year, donors to Mirman School were given the option of directing their annual gifts toward four different areas of support: (1) the area of greatest need, (2) tuition assistance, (3) academic programs, and (4) faculty development. The majority of donors chose to designate their gifts to the area of greatest need, allowing the school to allocate funds where they will make the most impact.

Music and theater arts remain cherished traditions that strongly represent the legacy of Dr. and Mrs. Mirman. Directed gifts to our music and theater departments support not only the musical instruments, production resources, and materials that we need to put on our complex plays, musicals, and concerts, but the children, our performers and artists, who thrive on the Mirman stage and beyond.

Established in 2016 in honor and memory of devoted Mirman parent Dr. Edward A. Massey. Gifts to this fund support Mirman School’s tuition assistance program, and are dedicated to assisting students in becoming successful, productive, and contributing citizens of the world.

Our Annual Fund makes up 10% of our annual operating budget, meaning that there is no aspect of campus life and learning that goes unsupported by our Annual Fund donors. Whether it’s something as mundane as a fresh new box of pencils or as transformative as the tuition

assistance grants awarded to one in six of our highly gifted students each year, there is no shortage of reasons to give.

For last year’s Annual Giving campaign, as we pushed toward an ambitious goal of 100% family participation within the first

100 days of school, we took a moment each day to celebrate all the reasons — big and small — that make up our raison d’être here at Mirman School.

And as you reach the closing pages of our 2019-2020 Annual Report, we hope you’ll take a moment to continue in that

spirit of celebration by making a gift in any amount to our 2020-2021 Annual Fund. We appreciate your consideration as we ask you to join us in honoring our legacy and forging our future.
