MK FY24 Annual Report

Page 1

Dear Friends and Supporters,

At Miriam’s Kitchen, we believe that everyone deserves a safe and stable home. This year, thanks to your support, we’ve helped 183 guests move into permanent housing each story a testament to the power of community and compassion.

One of those stories is Angela’s. After facing years of instability, she was finally able to move into her own home. Having a place to call her own has given Angela the stability to focus on her health, reconnect with loved ones, and start planning for the future.

While we celebrate these successes, the need for housing solutions is more urgent than ever. The latest Point-in-Time (PIT) count revealed a 5.6% increase in homelessness, highlighting the growing challenges faced by our neighbors At Miriam’s Kitchen, we continue to meet this need every day not just by helping guests move into homes but also by providing essential services, including more than 105,000 meals this year alone. These meals are often the first step in building trust and connecting guests to the support they need to find stable housing

Your support makes a real difference. Together, we can ensure that more people like Angela find a place to call home, while also addressing the root causes of homelessness in our community.

Thank you for being part of this journey. One meal, one home, one guest at a time we’re creating real change, together

With gratitude,

ADVOCACY HIGHLIGHTS

This year brought significant challenges, including deep cuts to DC’s social safety net and increased encampment evictions Despite these setbacks, we remained steadfast in our advocacy efforts. Here are three key highlights:

Elevating Guest Voices: Supported Guest Advisory Board member Wesley Thomas in sharing his story on CNN, for the special Homelessness in America

Raising the Alarm on Budget Cuts: Organized a rapid-response Week of Action to push for critical funding and successfully secured additional resources for Permanent Supportive Housing.

Shaping the Conversation: Presented at national conferences and led discussions on the criminalization of homelessness, narrative change, and guest-led advocacy.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

This year, we strengthened connections and amplified our mission through impactful community events. From engaging discussions on homelessness and policy to volunteer gatherings and fundraising initiatives, each event brought people together to take action. Highlights include our Beat the Heat event on the criminalization of homelessness, advocacy presentations at national conferences, Run 4 MK, and MLK Day of Service. These moments not only raised awareness but also fueled the movement to end chronic homelessness in DC.
