Defiance by the Politically Choked Kashmiris Another eruption in the Kashmir valley is a serious reminder that popular sentiment cannot be shelved or put on back burner for long. Unsurprisingly, the emergent generation of stone-pelting young Kashmiris is identified with their Palestinian counterparts; they are calling the new wave of protests an Intifada. (Aljazeera.com). Consequently, the outcome is even nastier violence between armed occupiers and young activists.

Two-nation theory: Accordingly, Kashmir should have been with Pakistan, because it has a Muslim majority. Pakistan complains that India has shown disregard to the resolutions of the UN Security Council, and the United Nations Commission in India and Pakistan, by failing to hold a plebiscite.

Pakistan rejects Indian fake claims to Kashmir, centring on the Instrument of Accession; it claims that the Maharaja handed over control of Jammu and Kashmir under duress, thus invalidating the legitimacy of the India’s claims.

Pakistan keeps on maintaining that India violated the Standstill Agreement and that Indian troops were already in Kashmir before the Instrument of Accession was signed.

Pakistan further claims that during 1990-1999, the Indian Armed Forces, its paramilitary groups, and counter-insurgent militias have been responsible for the deaths of 4,501 Kashmiri civilians.

Also from 1990 to 1999, there are records of 4,242 women between the ages of 7-70 that have been raped. Similar allegations were also made by some human rights organisations. Pakistan claims that the Kashmiri uprising demonstrates that the people of Kashmir wish to be with Pakistan or be independent.

Fight for self-rule: Kashmiri resistance groups had tried the electoral route that the Indian constitution held out, despite a long history of a lack of credibility of that process. Elections held ostensibly for administrative purposes had always been interpreted by New Delhi as repeated referendums in its favour. However, all that changed in 1987 when elections to the state legislature were massively rigged in favour of the expressly pro-India parties.

The fact is the mass upsurge of the summer of 2010 that was followed by a massive security crackdown, large scale arrests of protesters and resistance leaders alike from across the region - including some who are charged with protesting on Face book.

The renewed bumpy conditions have pushed the new generation of youth to force open new spaces. They have begun representing themselves by writing about their condition using the internet and social media such as Face book, Twitter and YouTube to reach out to a wider world out there. However, there is yet no sign of any significant change visible on the horizon.

Unfair division of India in 1947: Irresponsible job was done by the Imperial Britain because the Hindu maharaja of Kashmir opted to join the new Indian Union. But 77% of his people were Muslim (20% were Hindu, 3% Sikh and Buddhist). Muslim Kashmiris wanted to join newly-created Pakistan. Fighting erupted. India and Pakistan rushed in troops.

The cease-fire line that ended the fighting has become the de-facto border between the Indian and Pakistani ruled parts of Kashmir. India claims all of Kashmir, including Chinese-occupied Aksai Chin.

Pakistan also claims all of Kashmir. In 1948, the United Nations called for a plebiscite in Kashmir to decide this issue. Pakistan accepted; India refused the UN resolution.

Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of Pakistani and Indian troops confront one another on Kashmir’s cease-fire line, and further south in the plains of Punjab.

They are backed by growing numbers of tactical nuclear weapons, making Kashmir the world’s most dangerous border.

The killing of Wani has brought Kashmir at crossroads, with an uprising unlike previous ones. It has been a week of Kashmir being under siege with paramilitary forces and police clashing with angry demonstrators. Just before protests escalated, the officials snapped mobile phone and internet service. No more Cable television was available either.

According to initial figures alone, forty-three people were reported killed and more than 3,000 wounded. Around 150 people received serious eye injuries due to metal pellets fired by the paramilitary forces.

In the current phase of uprising, protesters are mainly teenagers, who are up against the state structure despite possible harm.

A surge in the new-age militancy followed by a highly intense uprising is likely to weaken India’s writ in Kashmir. Anger of Kashmiripeople is mounting, so is India’s accusation of Pakistan.

Plebiscite: Kashmir has been turned into a bone of contention between the two arch rivals with no possible solution in sight unless the UNO takes a real action to solve the mystery based on its own resolutions through allowing the right of self determination (plebi-

scite) to the Kashmiris.

Most importantly, the international community is obligated to tell Delhi that if it wants to have a seat on the UN Security Council, it must end the killing and torture in Kashmir.

Resolving the Kashmir dispute will eliminate the gravest danger faced by mankind: India-Pakistan nuclear exchange can kill an estimated 2 million initially, 100 million thereafter, and spread clouds of radioactive dust around the globe. India and Pakistan waste tens of billions on military spending because of Kashmir.

Intentionally ignored issue: Indian diplomats have been able to keep the Kashmir conflict on the rear shelves. It’s about time for the whole world to get involved.

Kashmir deserves to be turned into an autonomous and demilitarized free trade zone.

Whether a solution would be found or not, the ongoing uprising after Wani’s killing has changed the political scene in Kashmir, where only the youth own the narrative.

Beyond doubt, the protests may turn into an ugly uprising if India continues to misrepresent the fury as Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

Now is the time to get UN mandatory plebiscite for letting the UN decide about future of Kashmir.

Problem is every time the world leaders put pressure, some suspicious thing occurs (example: Pathankot attack) in India which is used as pretext to evade talks on Kashmir. The pattern is clear. The UN should now force the sanctions on India, otherwise the deteriorating situation may lead to a nasty war.

P A K I S T A N recent atrocities perpetrated on innocent Kashmiris by Indian security forces, said the resolution passed late last night.

It said the use of pellet guns is deplorable and is against the canons of international humanitarian laws .

This House denounces these reprehensible acts...It is confident that these blatant violations of international law cannot deter the valiant, oppressed people of Jammu and Kashmir from continuing to press their demand for realisation of their right to self-determination, which is enshrined in numerous UN Security Council Resolutions, it added.

It reiterated Pakistan’s continuing political, moral and diplomatic support for the struggle in Kashmir.

The resolution pressed the government to urge the international community, inter-governmental and inter- parliamentary organisations, international nongovernmental organisations and civil society and media to ask India to immediately stop alleged violations of the human rights.

It also demanded that the Human Rights Commission in Geneva should be requested to immediately send a fact finding mission to Kashmir to investigate alleged Human Rights violations by Indian security forces.

Helicopters dropped containers of toxic gas overnight on a town in Syria’s Idlib province, a rescue service operating in rebelheld territory said on Tuesday. Raed Saleh, head of the Syrian Civil Defense group, told Al Jazeera that 33 civilians, including 18 women and 10 children, were brought to a local hospital after the attack in the town of Saraqeb. Just before midnight, helicopters dropped five explosive barrels containing cylinders of chlorine and shards of metal on neighbourhoods in Saraqeb, he said. We suspect it was chlorine because of the smell and the nature of the injuries - suffocation and burning, red eyes. Members of the civil defense brought them all to the nearby hospital. The group, a network of volunteer search and rescue workers also known as the White Helmets that operates exclusively in rebel-held areas, posted a video on YouTube purportedly showing a number of men struggling to breathe and being given oxygen masks by rescue workers. Two of the injured were in critical condition, Saleh said.

Saraqeb is located approximately 15km from where a Russian helicopter was shot down on Monday, killing all five people on board, in the biggest officially acknowledged loss of life for Russian forces since they started operations in Syria in October 2015. The helicopter came down roughly mid-way between Aleppo and the Russian air force base at Khmeimim, near the Mediterranean coast. No group has claimed responsibility for shooting down the helicopter. ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani embassy in Riyadh has set up Special Facilitation Centre’ to provide welfare to Pakistani workers in Saudi Arabia who are suffering from financial problems and distress, a PM House statement said on Tuesday.

The prime minister has instructed the Pakistan embassy to assist the Pakistani workers in distress and take all possible steps to resolve their grievances at the earliest, read the statement.

The embassy will also facilitate the Pakistani workforce by compiling claims for their dues and salaries.

The Foreign Office (FO) also apprised the premier that the Pakistani embassy has made arrangements for ensuring food supply, medical assistance and settlement of salaries and outstanding dues of the employees.

Israeli authorities have prevented the head of the Palestinian Olympic team from leaving the Gaza Strip to be with his team in Brazil, according to a senior Palestinian official.

Excessiveness leads to shirk

B y: Sheikh Nasiruddin Al-Albani rom that which has been established in the shariah (prescribed law) is that mankind was, in the beginning, a single nation upon true Tawheed; then shirk (directing any part or form of worship, or anything else that is solely the right of Allah, to other than Allah) gradually overcame them. The basis for this is the saying of Allah Almighty: Mankind was one Ummah, then Allah sent prophets bringing good news and warnings. ( ur’an, 2:213) Ibn Abbas (may Allah bless him) said: Between Nuh (Noah) and Adam were 10 generations, all of them were upon shariah of the truth, then they differed. So Allah sent prophets as bringers of good news and as warners (Tahdheerus-Sajid min Ittikhadhiluburi Masajid) Ibn Urwah Al-Hanbali (d.837 H) said: This saying refutes those historians from the People of the Book who claim that abil (Cain) and his sons were fire-worshippers. (Ibn Jarir At-Tabari in his tafseer and Al-Hakim said: It is authentic according to the criterion of Al-Bukhari ) In it is also a refutation of some of the philosophers and atheists who claim that the (natural) basis of man is shirk and that tawhid evolved in man The preceding ayah (verse) falsifies this claim, as do the two following authentic Hadith: The Prophet (peace be upon him) related from Allah Almighty: I created all my servants upon the true religion (upon tawhid, free from shirk). Then the devils came to them and led them astray from their true religion. They made unlawful to people that which I had made lawful for them, and they commanded them to associate in worship with Me, that which I had sent down no authority.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Every child is born upon the Fitrah (Muslim/Ahmad) but his parents make him a Jew or a Christian or a magian. It is like the way an animal gives birth to a natural offspring. have you noticed any born mutilated, before you mutilate them.

Abu Hurayrah said: Recite if you wish: Allah’s fitrah with which He created mankind.

gion) of Allah. ( ur’an, 30:30) After this clear explanation, it is of the upmost importance for Muslims to know how shirk spread among the believers, after they were muwahhidin (people upon tawhid).

Allah Almighty says about the people of Nuh: And they have said: You shall not forsake your gods, nor shall you forsake Wadd, nor Suwa, nor Yaghuth, nor Yauq, nor Nasr. ( ur’an, 71:23) It has been related by a group from the salaf (pious predecessors), in many narrations, that these five deities were righteous worshippers. However, when they died, shaitan (Satan) whispered into their people to retreat and sit at their graves. Then Satan whispered to those who came after them that they should take them as idols, beautifying to them the idea that you will be reminded of them and thereby follow them in righteous conduct.

Then Satan suggested to the third generation that they should worship these idols besides Allah, the most high, and he whispered to them that this is what their forefathers used to do So Allah Almighty sent to them Nuh (peace be upon him), commanding them to worship Allah alone. However none responded to His call except a few. Allah, the mighty and majestic, related this whole incident in Chapter Nuh. Ibn Abbas relates: Indeed these five names of righteous men from the people of Nuh (peace be upon him). When they died shaitan whispered to their people to make statues of them and to place these statues in their places of gathering as a reminder of them, so they did this.

In Ad-Durral-Manthoor, Abdullah ibn Humaid relates from Abu Muttahar, who said: Yazeed ibn Al-Muhallab was mentioned to Abu Jaafar Al-Baqir (d.11H), so he said: He was killed at the place where another besides Allah was first worshipped.

Then he mentioned Wadd and said: Wadd was a Muslim who was loved by his people.

When he died, the people began to gather around his grave in the land of Babil (Babel), lamenting and mourning. So when Iblis (Satan) saw them mourning and lamenting over him, he took the form of a man and came to them, saying: I see that you are mourning and lamenting over him. So why don’t you make a picture of him (i.e. a statue) and place it in your places of gatherings so that you maybe reminded of him.’ So they said: Yes, and they made a picture of him and put in their place of gathering; which reminded them of him’.

When Iblis saw how they were (excessively) remembering him, he said : Why doesn’t every man among you make a similar picture to keep in your own houses, so that you can be (constantly) reminded of him.

So they all said yes. So each household made a picture of him, which they adored and venerated and which constantly reminded them of him.

Abu Jaafar said: Those from the later generation saw what the (previous generation) had done and considered that to the extent that they took him as an ilah (deity) to be worshipped besides Allah Almighty. He then said: This was the first idol worshipped other than Allah, and they called this idol Wadd.

(Al-Bukhari) Thus the wisdom of Allah Almighty was fulfilled, when he sent Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final Prophet and made his sh- a riah the completion of all divinely prescribed laws, in that He prohibited all means and avenues by which people may fall into Shirk, which is the greatest of sins.

For this reason, building shrines over graves and intending to specifically travel to them, taking them as places of festivity and gathering and swearing an oath by the inmate of a grave, have all been prohibited.

All of these lead to excessiveness and lead to the worship of other than Allah Almighty.

This being the case even more so in an age in which knowledge is diminishing, ignorance is increasing, there are few sincere advisers ( to the truth) and shaitan is co-operating with men and jinn to misguide mankind and to take them away from the worship of Allah Almighty alone. http://www.arabnews.com/

The ninth Fusion Festival took place in Holland Park Surrey on July 23 and 24th from 11am to 9pm with its greatest turnout yet. The City of Surrey’s Fusion Festival was named the Thousands residents and visitors enjoyed BC’s largest multicultural event at Surrey’s Fusion Festival in Holland Park over the weekend. The free twoday family event presented by Coast Capital Savings , SFU included over 40 cultural pavilions and over 100 performances on four stages.

City of Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner and local MPs, MLAs, City Councilors and many other dignitaries were on the stage on the afternoon of July 23rd when the opening ceremony took place on a huge Stage in front of a large crowd. Fusion Festival is a wonderful illustration of Surrey’s rich and significant cultural diversity, says City of Surrey Mayor.

A beautiful Parade of all participating countries took place in which kids and adults waved flags of different countries with some displaying country names on their hands. An impressive presentation were also made by many Nations at stage which attracted a lot of people. The turnout was not as good as much before due to hot humid waether, but in evenening time the

On July 23rd Mekaal Hasan Band from Pakistan performed very well at their Folk songs in Urdu and Persian and on July 24th SUR TAAL Surrey base Band did the performance at Pakistani Songs.Mr. Ashar azi performed very well with Mrs. yesha Nasser, Irfan Lawrance played Guitar, Amarjeet Singh played Tabla and Aabid Fazal was at Drums.

ratitude At the mention of this word, all of us think of many incidents in our life where we have been grateful to someone for their help or even their presence in our life. Gratitude is one of the main factors in the life of a Muslim.

Islam speaks highly of practising gratitude.

Gratitude to Allah (SWT) holds high in its pedestal. There are simple things we can do to show our gratitude to our Creator for all that He has given us and continues to give us. Subhan Allah (SWT) 1. Make a habit of saying Alhamdulillah (all praise be to Allah (SWT)) at every ease and hardship: Suhaib reported that Allah (SWT)’s Messenger (SAW) said: Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks Allah,thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (endures into patiently), there is good for him in it. Sahih Muslim It is as simple as making dua to Allah (SWT) for things to go the right in your life. The only thing that Allah (SWT) asks in return is your gratitude to Him. Make it a habit to say Alhamdulillah at every good news or at every good turn in your life. Not to forget, be thankful to Allah (SWT) for saving you from any calamity also.

In seeking to thank Allah (SWT), not only do you please Him, but you are sure to receive success in return in abundance. Do not forget, Allah (SWT) loves those who thank Him. Be grateful throughout your day. When you wake up in the morning, when you eat or drink, when you give charity and more so when you listen to the Holy uran, always say Alhamdulillah’.

As the uran says, And remember when your Lord proclaimed, If you are grateful, I will surely increase you in favour. But if you deny indeed, my punishment is severe. uran: Chapter 14, Verse 7

2. Prayers: Prayers are the best form of showing your gratitude to Allah (SWT). Remembrance of Allah (SWT) at all times, especially during your prayers, is a form of showing gratitude.

Pray on time, do not forget your obligatory prayers and if possible, make sunnah prayers as well. Remember to make dua in remembrance of Allah (SWT) and thank Him for all that he has bestowed upon you. Making dua for oneself and for others is characteristic of a true Muslim. A trait that Allah (SWT) himself loves to see in believers Try to develop traits of kindness, hospitality, lowering your tone of voice and personal hygiene. Mostly, He loves to see those who supplicate to him, not only at times of need, but also just because they remembered him.

Only through steadfast prayer is it possible for a Muslim to be a true believer. Without prayer, he will find himself in a state of loss.

As Allah (SWT) says in the Holy uran, Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer-we will surely cause him to live a good life, and we will surely give them their reward (in the hereafter) according to the best of what they used to do. uran: Chapter 16, Verse 97 The reward for prayers is immense. Jannah becomes closer to you and all for just showing your sign of gratitude to Allah (SWT) for what he has done for you throughout your life.

3. Helping oneself through helping others: Helping another person is a sign of a true Muslim. In this busy world, all of us get caught up in our daily activities that we tend to forget what we have and what others need. For example, when you see your classmate short of money to buy lunch, offer him/her to share your lunch or provide them with lunch for a day. You will not be at any loss Allah (SWT) has a list of all your deeds and is waiting to reward you.

The Holy uran says: As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of refuge, as accommodation for what they used to do. uran: Chapter 32, Verse 19 There are many ways of helping others and

doing good deeds.

Show your gratitude through charity. Allah (SWT) loves those believers who spend for His cause. Any form of spending for His cause, for Allah (SWT)’s pleasure alone, and you will surely be rewarded in abundance Carrying books for your professor, cleaning the house for your mother, opting to help someone cross the road, all these are small acts that you could start with.

4. Being good to others the same way you want them to be good to you: We always complain of how some people mistreat us or bully us. But no matter what situation you are in, you should never forget to treat others with respect, dignity and equality. The more they mistreat you, chances are that you will want to react furiously to them. But remember Allah (SWT) in such situations. Is it worthy that a believer of Allah (SWT) fights with others Is that what Ar-Rahman expects from us The person on the other side might not worry about all this.

But you will be answerable to the Almighty on the Day of Judgment and there won’t be a third person as a witness to support your argument. You will be answerable for your own actions.

It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira (R.A) that the Messenger (SAW) observed, He who believes in Allah (SWT) and the Last Day does not harm his neighbor, and he who believes in Allah (SWT) and the Last Day shows hospitality to his guest and he who believes in Allah (SWT) and the Last Day speaks good or remains silent. Sahih Muslim So the more you stay away from such actions and thoughts, the more you are respecting Allah (SWT)’s words and that in turn is a form of showing gratitude to Our Lord for all that he has done for you. So think twice before you react. In fact, think thrice before you react.

5. Think good things, say good things: The fact that we can think and speak is indeed a gift from Allah (SWT) . Are you aware of the angels that guard you throughout your lives The angels who are appoint-

ed by Allah (SWT) to write down your good and bad deeds When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared to record . uran: Chapter 50, Verse 17-18 Be wary of what you say. Every thought, every word you speak, is written down and is presented on the Day of Judgement.

So try to bring yourself to think good thoughts, think good for others. Start with small thoughts. For example, when your friend receives some form of accolade, show appreciation for it. Try not to bicker about it.

Try to be happy for the person and if possible, make a dua for success for the person in the future as well. If that is too hard, start with small steps, appreciate him/her and control your thought from being jealous of the other person. Try to make changes in your life by other small activities like cooking for your family, thanking your parents for all that they have given you, taking care of your younger siblings so your mother can rest for a while, cleaning the house, spending time with your grandparents etc.

These are all small acts we all could start within our lives, and it could benefit us in the long run through good practice of it in our daily life.

I’ll leave with a thought for all of you to ponder upon: if Allah (SWT) can give us everything we ask for, why is it so hard for us to be grateful. If not for Allah (SWT), who else do we do all this for Courtesy: Productive Muslim

By Ruwa Shah t has been exactly a week since I landed back to peace -- after my return from the burning paradise, Kashmir. From on board the plane, I overlooked my beautiful homeland where mountains stood naked with the icing of clouds hovering over the peaks.

I felt it was a beautiful but a painful dungeon. What I saw from that small window of the plane, was not what I witnessed on the streets, hospitals and homes during my stay at my home in Srinagar, where I had gone to celebrate Eid. Now, I am away from the horrifying scenes of blood -- and children hurt with hundreds of tiny pellets pierced into their bodies lying on the beds of hospitals. And I am away from the siege which continues.

As I started from the airport in Delhi towards my apartment, everything around was normal. I was seeing so many people on the streets after a week of curfew. The normality here made me feel guilty. I felt very mean about myself as I thought about my friends,

my relatives and my people back home who have been denied almost every basic need.

I made a promise that I will detach myself from what is happening in Kashmir as it had caused me pain, and my consciousness was affected. But I failed. The thoughts of the sufferings of my people still haunt me. I try to sleep at night but I cannot because the images of people hit by bullets arriving at the hospitals fills me with disquiet. The depressing condition of Kashmir and the scenes did not allow me to stay detached.

I am scared of seeing my Twitter and Facebook time-line too. I probably would not have written about this had I not read about five-year-old Nasir admitted in Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital in Srinagar. Nasir has not been hit by a bullet or pellet.

Apparently, the security forces have inserted a needle inside his left eye, according to local media reports. His innocent cherubic face is partially covered by a bandage. He was not protesting or mourning the death of Burhan Wani. He is just five. I assume he does not

And Nasir is not the only one. There are hundreds of children who are injured by the pellet shots -- which the authorities say was a non-lethal weapon to control mobs . But, it has left hundreds blind.

My friends in Delhi, keep on saying that Kashmir is an integral part of India . I do not contest them. Neither do I question their obsession for Kashmir. I just have a simple question to the stakeholders. How can you do this to the people whom you call your own I might be living my normal life sitting in the national capital. Of course, every beginner who wants to make a career in journalism would want to be in the midst of news.

Seriously, Jim I’ll give you the Balkans thing. That was a lie. But the others aren’t.

The Clintons were in debt when they left the White House. Hillary’s great-grandparents were immigrants—she was off by a generation. Nobody knows if she ever tried to join the Marines, but there’s no evidence she

didn’t. She didn’t knowingly send classified material on her private email system, and it’s hardly fair to judge her by the fact that some of her emails were retroactively classified. And her statement about the Iraq War was strained (she was talking about criticism after Obama joined the Senate), but it’s typical political exaggeration, not a lie.

Look: all politicians lie sometimes. That includes Hillary Clinton. But as the chart on the right shows, Hillary is one of the most honest politicians on the national stage.

Here’s a similar conclusion from the New York Times.

I know it’s in their partisan self interest for conservatives to insist that Hillary is the world’s biggest liar. But she isn’t. Not by a long, long way. Republicans need to get the beam out of their own eye before they keep banging on about the mote in Hillary’s.

Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq in 2004 while serving our nation.

In fact, Mrs. Khan said she remained silent on the DNC stage as her husband spoke for Hillary Clinton because it was too painful for her to speak of her son’s loss on such a public stage. However, she has since spoken out strongly in defense of her son’s service and of the right of Muslim women to speak out on any issue.

Since the controversy broke in the media, Trump has tripled down on his smears of the Khan family. One of his advisers even retweeted an attack on Mr. Khan from a notorious anti-Muslim hate site.

As a Muslim woman, and as the leader of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, I reject the Islamophobia and stereotyping that underlie Trump’s false implications and smears. A 2009 Gallup poll found that American Muslim women are the second most highly educated group of religious women in the U.S. and are just as likely as American Muslim men to have

a college degree or higher education. My parents taught me the Prophet Muhammad’s teaching that Muslims, both women and men, should pursue high levels of education and, inspired by this Islamic teaching, I worked hard to get into law school and went on to pursue a fulfilling legal career.

Trump has a long history of sexist comments and is no defender of women’s rights. He is as much anti-woman as he is anti-Muslim. trump is a schoolyard bully. He seeks out the vulnerable points in any perceived opponent and goes for the throat— even if his victim is a Gold Star mother.

Trump’s attack does not reflect American values or traditions and makes many people believe he is temperamentally and psychologically unfit to serve as our nation’s commander and chief. It is absolutely disgraceful and disrespectful for Trump to use Islamophobia, bigotry and stereotypes to disparage grieving parents.

CAIR, the American Muslim community and patriotic Americans of all faiths and backgrounds are now calling on Donald Trump to apologize for his shameful and divisive remarks. A social media campaign, CanYouHearUsNow, is encouraging Muslim women and activists to tweet at Trump about who they are and how they speak out.

Unfortunately, I do not believe that Trump will apologize for this latest eruption of bigotry. It is not in his nature to apologize—for this or for any of the hate-filled statements he has made in the past year. Thus far, Trump has paid little or no political price for his sexism and bigotry. Perhaps his immunity to personal accountability is now at an end.

TEHRAN: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Monday that the Iranian people have not seen any benefit from the nuclear deal with world powers, state media reported.

The report quoted Khamenei saying: Weren’t the supposed sanctions lifted to change the life of the people Is any tangible effect seen in people’s life after six months He said the sanctions were supposed to be lifted swiftly. But now the issue of a gradual lifting of the sanctions has been raised, he said. Why Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters, said the US has continued to thwart Iran’s economic relations with other countries despite the landmark accord. He said Tehran will refuse to engage in any further talks with Washington due to what he described as US violations of the deal, though

he has previously ruled out further negotiations in other speeches.

The US-based company Boeing Co. signed a deal with Tehran involving dozens of planes and worth as much as $25 billion. But the agreement has been criticized by both republican and democratic politicians. In July the US House of Representatives passed two measures that would block the sale, but the issue has not yet reached the senate.

RIYADH: Saudi employees who have not been paid salaries for three months or more should apply to social insurance and benefit from the Sanad system, Mufrej Al-Haqabani, minister of labor and social development, has said.

The minister was reacting to reports about the plight of Saudi Oger workers who have not got their salaries for over seven months.

All those who are not being paid salaries for three months by their employers should report their grievances and lodge a complaint at the ministry which would help them and address their problems, he said, adding that his ministry will pay greater attention to solving such disputes.

Al-Haqabani said Article 81 of the Labor Law allows the worker to leave his workplace without notice if the employer fails to honor the contract or pay the salary.

Only about two days ago, hundreds of employees of Saudi Oger, demanding unpaid wages from the company, were dispersed by police in Jeddah. They caused traffic disruptions and shut down a gas station.

Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, media director at the ministry’s branch in the Makkah region, said in a previous statement that the services of the company were suspended for violating the Wage Protection Law and that several visits were made to the company to finalize procedures related to payment of all employees and to end travel procedures for those with terminated contracts. He said standard fines and penalties were slapped on the company for such violations.

n Friday,15th July 2016, night, a group of middle-ranking Turkish soldiers attempted a coup Their focus was on Ankara and Istanbul, taking control of the Istanbul’s bridges, airports, the Turkish parliament, and some police stations Their attempted coup was ill-planned and badly executed Their eorts were thwarted by the police aided by the huge public support 161 people killed, including members of the coup; 1,500 wounded; 7500 soldiers arrested The government has blamed the coup on the Gulen movement. Some govt ministers have also blamed the US as being behind the coup.

Who is behind this coup

We really do not know. It will be clear if Turkish Government takes appreciate fair measures What we do know is that Erdogan has already started using this incident as a pretext to further purge state and society beyond those involved in the coup.

For example, while it was reported that 47 military oďŹƒcers were involved in the coup, as of now, almost 7500 oďŹƒcers, including more than 100 of generals have been arrested. Furthermore, the Higher Board of Judges and Prosecutors sacked 2745 judges and prosecutors including ten of its own members.

Already tens of appellate judiciary judges are detained by orders from the Ankara Prosecutor.

How did the government determine the culpability of 2745 judges overnight in a coup orchestrated by a fraction of the military Clearly, these are people the government wanted to get rid of anyway and is using this opportunity to do so.

Has ulen condemned the coup

Absolutely and unequivocally In the early hours of the coup, the Alliance for Shared Values, an organization that speaks on behalf of Gulen, condemned the coup attempt. (http://afsv.org/statement-byalliance-for-shared-values-on-developmentsin-turkey-2/) This was followed by a personal statement by Gulen, and by leading Gulen inspired organizations condemning the coup without if’s and but’s.

Gulen’s condemnation was picked up by the world press, including the Financial Times.

So why has Erdogan blamed ulen for this coup

Gulen and Hizmet is Erdogan’s default scapegoat . Whenever something happens that he does not approve, he blames it on Gulen.

Be it a condemnatory letter from 75 US Senators on Turkey; to corruption investigations; to something else ridiculous . Gulen becomes a pretext to purge state and society of anyone not entirely loyal.

It is far easier to blame this on Gulen because that is a narrative the public have already come to accept. Also, by claiming that the Gulen movement is everywhere, blaming this military act on Gulen allows Erdogan to strike elsewhere on pretext that they are one and the same.

So the Tur ish people stood with President Erdogan against the military

I thought they hated that guy Erdogan’s support among the Turkish electorate was approximately 40-50 per cent before this coup. So he already had widespread support.

Even those staunchly critical of Erdogan and the government condemned the coup and stood by the government.

Crucially, the coup plotters failed to project the sense that their coup was succeeding which coup experts point out as crucial.

There was no support for a military takeover by the Turkish people

Why have the people opposed Erdogan in the past What has he done that has made people so unhappy

In his 1st and 2nd terms, Erdogan ran a reforming government.

However, from 2010 onwards, Erdogan became increasingly authoritarian as he began to pursue more populist Islamist policies. The summer 2013 Gezi park protests was in reaction to this authoritarianism which Erdogan labelled as a coup of the interest rate lobby , a euphemism for the Jewish lobby.

This authoritarian streak gained momentum when a series of corruption investigations implicating Erdogan’s inner circle went public in December 2013 onwards. To suppress the substantial evidence and judicial investigations, Erdogan fought back to control and colonize the judiciary, media and civil society to crush all forms of dissent.

Many people are unhappy with the resulting authoritarian regime.

What now

Erdogan has already won. There won’t be any meaningful opposition to his witch-hunt against opposition groups from now on.

Till now, the Chief of General Sta resisted Erdogan’s attempts of redesigning the military. The Chief of sta has now given into that.

Having attained complete loyalty from Turkish state and civil society structures, Erdogan next stop is likely to be the Turkish diaspora overseas.

We are already seeing coordinated attacks against Hizmet overseas and this is likely to continue.

For the past 6 years Erdogan has been creating formal and informal structures through which to mobilize the Turkish-speaking and increasingly wider Muslim communities.

Unfortunately, the West is supporting terror and standing by the coup plotters, said Erdogan in a televised speech at his presidential palace. Those who we imagined to be friends are standing by the coup plotters and by the terrorists.

Erdogan angrily denounced the judicial authorities in Germany for not allowing him to address via video conference a rally in Cologne at the weekend in his support.

Bravo The courts in Germany work very fast Erdogan said with heavy irony.

He accused Germany in the past of allowing leaders from the outlawed Kurdistan Work-

ers Party (PKK) of addressing events in Germany via video conference.

He said Turkey had previously also handed Germany a list of over 4,000 wanted militants without having any response.

But here constitutional court decides in two hours to ban the video conference speech.

Is the West on the side of democracy or on the side of terror he added, also accus-

ing Belgium of failing to hand over a leftist militant linked to the 1996 killing of Turkish businessman Ozdemir Sabanci.

Coup was scenario written from outside’ Turkey. Erdogan said the attempted coup was a scenario drawn up from outside Turkey, in an allusion to possible foreign involvement in the plot. This coup was not just an event planned from the inside. The actors inside acted out a scenario for a coup written from the outside, Erdogan said in a speech at his presidential palace.

The president had previously said that foreign states could have been involved, while not giving clues as to which countries might be responsible.

Ankara accuses the US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen of being behind the plot and has stepped up pressure on the US authorities to extradite him back to Turkey.

How can it be, when we are strategic partners and I ask you on behalf of my country to hand someone over on the basis of a national security strategy document, you keep on hiding and sheltering him Erdogan angrily asked Washington.

Erdogan said Gulen’s major source of income was in the United States, adding that $200-300 million alone comes from charter schools run by foundations linked to him.

Seven national polls conducted after the close of the Democratic convention last week showed the former secretary of state receiving an average increase of nearly 7% compared with her preconvention support. Mrs Clinton’s favourability ratings have also improved, rising to an average of four points to 41% in recent polls.

Though a larger share finds her unfavourable at an average of 53%, it is still four point less than it was before the convention.But do the recent batch of surveys paint an accurate picture of what will happen when voters head to the polls in November Not quite, according to experts and pollsters. While Mrs Clinton has gained a comfortable lead over Mr Trump, it will take more than polling to determine who will end up in the Oval Office.With hundreds of surveys tracking the election, US polls tend to be good at gauging American opinion, according Clifford Young, the president of US Public Affairs for Ipsos polling.

We have the luxury of large numbers, Mr Young said. That makes it better and easier for prediction.

However, all of these polls use different methodologies to survey Americans and one of the biggest challenges is determining who actually will cast a ballot in November. Polling is very difficult these days, said Brendan Nyhan, an assistant professor of government at Dartmouth College. It’s hard to get a representative sample of Americans to take a survey online or by phone, and even if you do get a good sample, it’s difficult to tell who is actually going to turn out to vote. Research has also shown polls tend to be the least accurate the further they are from Election Day. During the early stages of the primary election, parties have yet to select their nominee while voters may not necessarily be paying attention to candidates or the issues, Mr Nyhan said. For example, polls conducted in January 2003 showed former President George W Bush ahead of Democratic Sena-

However, Sam Wang, a neuroscientist and election analyst at Princeton University, warns that only polls that specifically survey people at the beginning and end of either convention can provide an accurate picture. Though conventions are an important election marker, Mr Wang points out the public image of a candidate can change over the course of a campaign.

What is a convention bounce Candidates often receives a bump or bounce in polls in the week following their party’s convention. For instance, candidates who are underperforming before the con-

vention tend to receive larger bumps while candidates who are running ahead of where they are expected to be often receive smaller bumps. The bumps, Mr Nyhan explained, helps bring the public closer to the expected outcome. The bounce itself doesn’t necessarily determine the winner but it helps move it in the right direction, Mr Nyhan said. But convention bounces tend to be short-lived and mainly come from party supporters. Mr Trump enjoyed a brief post-convention bump before Mrs Clinton regained a solid lead at the end of the Democratic convention. In fact, sometimes bounces just show how likely people are willing to respond to a survey or say they will support a candidate, but that does not mean they will show up at the polls.

How important are state polls While national polls can measure movement and general opinion, state polls provide a more nuanced glimpse of where voters stand. In a nation as ethnically diverse as the US, it’s somewhat challenging to survey the whole country, Mr Wang says. Consider the Electoral College, which assigns each state a number of electors according to its size. The winning candidate needs to get a majority of 270 of the 538 electors to win the Electoral College vote. In majority of US states, the winner takes all of that state’s electors, which is why state polls play an integral role in election projections. Particularly in the key battleground states such as Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, polls serve as an important bellwether to November’s outcome.President Barack Obama won all three of those states in 2008 and 2012.

What do the latest polls mean for November’s outcome While Mrs Clinton’s bounce has given her a comfortable lead over Mr Trump, experts say whether it will stick will not be clear until the next couple of weeks.However, her

rise may be meaningful because there are not many events between now and November that are likely to change people’s minds, Mr Nyhan added.Still, the recent series of polls are more indicative in the short term of relative performance. Mrs Clinton’s bump may suggest she had a better convention performance, Mr Young said. According to a recent Gallup poll, Americans said they were 45% more likely to vote for Mrs Clinton while 41% said they were less likely to cast their ballot for her after the Democratic convention. In contrast, Gallup found the 2016 Republican convention marked the first time in history in which more voters said they were less likely to vote for a party’s nominee after its convention. In fact, 51% of those surveyed said they were less likely to vote for Mr Trump compared to 36% who said they were more likely to cast their ballot for him after the Republican convention.

Are this election’s polls any different from previous elections Though Mr Wang noted this year voter attention is unusually high, the last three elections have shown less movement in polls than in previous campaign years. Voter polarization has gotten a lot stronger, which means voters are less and less likely to consider the other candidate, he said. In fact, one indication is the size of the convention bounces, which have become notably smaller in recent election history.

According to Gallup, candidates saw an average convention bump of 6.2% from 1964 to 1992 while today they see an average of 3.8%. However, Mr Young emphasises this year is a disruptive election, with campaigns marked by a stronger protest vote. This year’s forecasts must also take in account just how deeply unpopular Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump are compared with previous elections, which means it ultimately will rely on voter turnout. The desire to vote for neither candidate complicates things, Mr Young said.

The protest vote can have potential to really impact the outcome when it comes to the election. As the 2016 presidential election has demonstrated, anything could happen in the race to the finish line.

By: Ariana Eunjung Cha f you fear you’re doing irreparable damage to your body because your whitecollar job keeps you sitting at your desk from 9 to 5, or you regularly spend entire weekends sprawled out on your couch bingewatching Netflix, there’s some good news just out from sports medicine researchers.

According to a study published in The Lancet, all is not lost. You may be able to make up for your increased risk of death due to a sedentary lifestyle by engaging in enough physical activity.

So just how much is enough The first thing you need to know is that it’s not a fixed number. The ratio is based on the amount of sitting you do daily. If you sit four hours a day, you need to do at least 30 minutes of exercise. An eight-hour work day of sitting means one hour of exercise.

The numbers come from an analysis based on a very large pool of people, about 1 million adults, 45 and older, from the United States, Western Europe and Australia. The findings show a risk reduction or even elimination for your risk of death from heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of activity a week. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes a day.

This study is the latest to recommend a higher threshold for the minimum amount of exercise.

Meaningful and accessible citizenship:

Most immigrants choose to become citizens as part of their integration into Canadian society. If we believe in immigration integration, we should support political integration, in addition to economic, social and cultural, said Griffith.

The main instrument for doing so is citizenship, given that allows for full participation in the political process.

Canada’s naturalization rate has been declining, from the peak of 93.3 per cent for immigrants who came before 1971, to justt 36.7 per cent among those who arrived d between 2006 and d 2007.

Griffith said Ottawa must set targets forr naturalization as a benchmark, to assess whether its policies strike the rightt balance in making citizenship accessible and meaningful.

Officials must also regularly review citizenship tizenship requirements to ensure that different ethnic groups and immigration classes (economic, family and refugees) have comparable outcomes. Reducing the hefty application fee from the current $530 would make citizenship more financially accessible.

Andrew Griffith, a former director general at the immigration department, said Canada largely has its immigration policies and programs right, but an independent review by a royal commission would be helpful.

He said the consultation questions are biased towards economic class immigrants and miss out on important areas such as citizenship.

Since the beginning of the summer, Immigration Minister John McCallum and his parliamentary secretary, Arif Virani, have held more than two dozen roundtable meetings across Canada with settlement services organizations, businesses and community groups to get their thoughts.

Although the meetings are by invitation only — more are coming in August — the public can submit ideas by email to the minister. Since early July, more than 2,500 online submissions have been received. Submissions end Aug. 5.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will be reviewing the feedback from Canadians to help guide decisions on how many people we will welcome in the coming years and the future of immigration in Canada, said a department spokesperson.

While the final report won’t be ready till at least the fall, the Star interviewed a group of immigration experts to weigh in on the national dialogue by identifying gaps in the system and offering solutions.

The Temporary Foreign Workers Program should be converted into a permanent settlement program. If Canada requires workers, then it should provide these workers with the same rights and prospects of remaining in Canada and acquiring citizenship that all Canadians possess, Bauder said.

This is not only a moral responsibility. If some workers have fewer rights than others, then it will undermine wages and labour standards for all.

Bauder said Canadians should ask themselves if they want affordable labour that discourages business from raising wages.

He is also critical of suggestions that Canada should charge higher fees for an expedited process.

It seems grossly unfair to speed up the process for those who are able to pay more.

How about adjusting the speed based on need, faster admission of refugees and split families he asked.

Bauder believes Canada can again lead the way in designing progressive refugee and migration policies, given the country has the luxury of being protected by geography sharing the border with an a uent America.

I have always been what you might call needy’. I needed friends, I needed people.

All the time. And I couldn’t handle letdowns.

But at the heart of what makes us run after the creation, is simply love. The need to give and receive love. This need has been put in us by the Creator. And every need created by God, has been created for a purpose. The need to give and receive love was created as a driver. A driver that pushes us back to God. You see, we began with God, and God wants us to come back to Him in this life—even before we come back to Him in the next. So He puts inside us, drivers intended to bring us back. Intended to bring us back Home.

But our problem is we get lost along the way.

We can’t deny the drive; but we get lost because we seek to fulfill it in the wrong way. We look to fulfill that need in the wrong place. The driver was created by God to take us to Him. But instead, that driver takes us towards the creation.

And that’s where we get lost.

Why do we run after other people Why do we run after money Why do we run after status, or power We run after these things because we want love and respect. And we believe that by attaining these things, we will succeed at getting both love and respect.

But there is a fascinating formula that governs this world. And it is very, very simple. Unfortunately, we almost always get this formula wrong.

Yes, we all have that same driver inside us, but the human being is hasty. We prefer the immediate over the delayed, the seen over the unseen, the physical over the spiritual. We run first to what we can see and feel and touch. We run first to what we think is closer. We do this because while the human being is needy and dependent, the human being is also impatient and weak. We go for what seems closest, easiest, quickest.

So we go towards the creation.

See, we think that the more we run after this world (dunya) the more we run after the love of people, and wealth and beauty and status the more we will have of it. We think that the more intensely we want something, the more likely we are to get it. And when we don’t get it, we become angry—so angry—at God Himself. As though the intensity of my wanting, somehow makes me entitled to having.

But the more we drown in this false equation, the more we fail at reaching our goal, and the more we miss the true but simple equation of love and life. That equation is clear: The more intensely we want the creation itself, the less likely we are to attain it. If it is love you need, and you seek it from the creation, you will

never truly get it. Or get enough. Anything of the creation sought for its own sake will evade you.

And will never fill you.

Even happiness itself: The more you run after it, the more it evades you. But if you run to God instead, happiness will run after you. If you run to God instead, the love of people will run after you. If you run to God instead, success will run after you. True success in this life, and the next.

If you run to God instead, provision will run after you. This, brothers and sisters, is the secret formula for which tyrants have burned down cities, and kings have searched the world—but never found.

This is the secret. The only formula you need to know.

In a profound hadith (Prophetic teaching), a man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and said: O Messenger of God, direct me to an act, which if I do, God will love me and people will love me.

He said: Detach yourself from the world, and God will love you. Detach yourself from what is with the people, and the people will love you. Ibn Majah Ironically, the less we chase after the approval and love of the people, the more we gain it. The less needy we are of others, the more people are drawn to us and seek our company. This hadith teaches us a profound Truth. Only by breaking out of the orbit of the creation, can we succeed with both God—and people.

To run to God is a movement of the heart. To run to God is to strive with everything He has given you. Running to God is movement. If you are passive, you are not moving. You are falling.

Movement to God, running to God, is to face your heart towards Him in every motion of life.

It is to face every goal, every intention, every End towards Him. He becomes the object of your striving. The means of your striving. The ultimate End of your striving. But you keep striving. You keep working to be the best mother you can. The best father. The best neighbor, the best student, daughter, son, employee.

This is the legacy of all our Prophets, peace be upon them all. Their bodies were in dunya.

Striving. The Prophet (pbuh) was the best leader, the best father, the best husband, the best friend.

His body was working hard in dunya. For a while. But his heart was always with Allah. His heart was already in Akhira (Hereafter), even while his body was still here—for a time. His heart was already Home. His heart saw through the illusions of this life. His limbs worked hard.

So hard. He bled, and cried, and strived. His body stood until his feet cracked. His body was abused in Ta’if. His body lost sleep, and felt hunger, and thirst, and fever, and pain. And loss.

But his heart faced only Allah.

And with Allah there is no hunger, thirst, pain, or loss. His body had to strive in different direc-

tions; he was a father, a leader, a friend, a husband. But while his body had to strive in all those places, his heart faced only One. Only one direction.

His heart faced only God. As Ibrahim (AS) said so beautifully: Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah. (6:79)Ibrahim (AS) focused the face of his heart only on Allah. Completely. Haneefan.

Completely. You will find that to only partially face your heart to God is to suffer. And that suffering is in proportion to the degree of partial submission.Allah tells us in the uran: O you who have believed, enter into submission completely whole-heartedly and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. (2:208) There is pain in just partial submission. There is a pain in not entering into peace and security—the only peace and security—completely.

With one’s whole heart. There is pain in half a sajdah (prostration). There is a pain in putting your heart (even partially) in anyone else’s hands. And that pain continues until you turn your entire heart only in one direction. Until you turn your entire heart only towards Him. He becomes the only true aim of your striving.

As we say at least 17 times every single day: You alone do we worship and You alone do we seek for help. (1:5). Allah is the only true End, and the only true means to that End. No one gets to Allah without Allah. La hawla wa la quwat illa billah: There is no change and no strength, except by God. The one who turns his heart completely to God in this way, reaches true freedom. And that person can no longer be harmed by the creation.

The fire couldn’t burn Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

The fires’ of the creation cannot harm the one who’s heart faces only God. The financial, physical, emotional, social, and psychological fires cannot harm the one who’s heart is only with God. Externally, the person might look harmed, but in Reality, such a person is never harmed.

The haqiqah of the situation is not harm, but good, as we know from the words of our beloved Prophet (pbuh): Strange is the case of a believer, there is good for him in everything—and this is only for the believer. If a blessing reaches him, he is grateful to God, which is good for him, and if an adversity reaches him, he is patient which is good for him. Muslim And this is only for the believer. This is only for the one who’s heart is turned completely and only in one direction. Remember, Allah says: O you who have believed, enter into Islam sub-

mission and peacefulness completely wholeheartedly and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. (2:208) Enter into peace and security completely. Complete security is only for those who enter completely . But remember the heart is not a still entity. The heart is by definition that which turns (hence the Arabic word for heart qalb’ comes from the root which means to turn’). The heart by definition is that which turns. So our object in life is to keep bringing the heart back to focus, back to center, back to God. And we consistently seek God’s help, as the Prophet (pbuh) used to supplicate most of all: Oh turner of hearts, set our hearts firm on Your deen (way).

This constant reorientation is tawbah. Return.

Again and again and again. Until we meet Him. Only the one who gives up this fight, fails. Only the one who—due to complacency or despair— gives up the fight of constantly bringing the heart back to focus, fails in this life and the next.

We all want love. From God, and from the creation. We are all running towards something.

Ironically, the more we run after the creation, the more the creation runs away from us As soon as we stop running after the creation, and reorient, as soon as we start running towards God, the creation runs after us. It’s a simple, simple formula: Run towards the creation, you lose God and the creation. Run towards God, you gain God and the creation.

Allah is Al Wadud (The Source of Love). Therefore, love comes from God—not people. As one author, Charles F. Haanel, put it: To acquire love fill yourself up with it until you become a magnet.

When you fill yourself with the Source of love (Al Wadud), you become a magnet for love. Allah teaches us this in the beautiful hadith udsi: If Allah has loved a servant of His , He calls Gabriel (on whom be peace) and says: I love So-and-so, therefore love him.’ He (the Prophet pbuh) said: So Gabriel loves him. Then he (Gabriel) calls out in heaven, saying: Allah loves So-and-so, therefore love him.’ And the inhabitants of heaven love him. He (the Prophet pbuh) said: Then acceptance is established for him on earth. (Muslim Bukhari, Malik, & Tirmidhi) We’re all running. But so few of us are running in the right direction. We have the same goal.

But to get there, we need to stop. And examine if we are running towards the Source or just a reflection.

By Nasim Yousaf akistan recently lost another icon, Abdul Sattar Edhi, who died in Karachi at the age of eighty-eight. Edhi’s services for Pakistan shall be long remembered and he joins the ranks of other great South Asian icons, including the late social scientist Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan. This piece highlights the contributions of Mr. Edhi and Dr. Khan, who shared many similarities and were recognized around the world for their social service.

Like Mother Teresa, Edhi and Dr. Khan were both respected and legendary humanitarians who spent their lives helping the underprivileged. The two men shared much in common. Both were born in British India, Edhi in 1928 in Bantva (Gujarat) and Dr. Khan in 1914 in Agra (United Provinces, now Uttar Pradesh). Edhi arrived in Pakistan in 1947 and Dr. Khan in 1950. Motivated to help their

fellow citizens, Edhi opened his first clinic in 1951. Meanwhile, in 1950, Dr. Khan established The Comilla Cooperative Karkhana in Comilla (a poverty stricken area in East Pakistan now Bangladesh ). Later, in 1957, Edhi launched the Edhi Foundation (EF). Dr. Khan founded his Pakistan (Bangladesh) Academy for Rural Development in 1959 and later the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP).

EF and OPP often filled gaps in services that the state had either ignored or failed to provide for the people. For example, EF currently runs a wide range of services and facilities, including ambulances, morgues, graveyards, hospitals, educational services, marriage bureaus, orphanages, centers for the abandoned, bread plants and more. Meanwhile, Dr. Khan’s OPP focused on healthcare, sanitation, housing, microfinance, education, research and training, rural development, etc. Millions benefit from Edhi and Dr. Khan’s services and their respective organizations have received world recognition for their contributions.

Along with their professional similarities, both men had a lot in common personally as well. They were known as honest and humble individuals who provided a beacon of hope for Pakistan. They led a simple lifestyle, despite having resources and contacts at high-levels.

Both were non-sectarian and non-communal and believed in serving all members of their communities across faiths.

Despite their noble missions and nature, the two men faced adversity and threats at times.

Edhi received threats from the Taliban, who declared him an infidel for his love for people of all faiths. Meanwhile, Dr. Khan was accused of blasphemy and court cases were filed to have him convicted (Pakistan’s blasphemy laws carry a potential death sentence); posters appeared denouncing Dr. Khan and some demanded that he be hanged.

In honor of their services, both Edhi and Dr. Khan have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. And both received many prestigious awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (considered to be the Nobel Prize of Asia) and the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Edhi’s award was recently announced), the highest civil award in Pakistan. Pakistan’s Beach Avenue has been renamed after Abdul Sattar Edhi, while the Akhter Hameed Khan Resource Center and Akhtar Hameed Khan National Centre for Rural Development have been named after Dr. Khan. Separate books have also been published on both men by a well-known Pakistani publisher under its The Azeem Pakistani (Great Pakistanis) series; the series highlights the achievements of renowned Pakistanis in various fields in order to inspire people, particularly the younger generation.

These men served their country for decades and dedicated themselves to the cause of the nation. Dr. Khan died on October 09, 1999

and Edhi passed away on July 8th, 2016.

Their deaths were widely mourned. Dr. Khan was buried in the compound of the Orangi Pilot Project and Edhi in the Edhi Village.

These two individuals earned the respect of both the East and West for their services to the humanity. Their exemplary lives are a source of inspiration not only for Pakistanis, but the entire world. Their selfless services and commitment to the human spirit shall live on forever in the hearts of people.

In that case, how do you compete You compete and win by including on your resume the achievements, projects and assignments you may have overlooked, or chose not to put on your resume because they were short-term, part of your personal life or not a real job.

Here are nine great examples (and one thing, if you’re a student or recent grad, that probably is on your resume... but shouldn’t be): Social Media Savviness No. You aren’t a guru, ninja or an expert.

But you do know your way around Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Instagram and Pinterest. Your profiles may be the envy of all your friends and colleagues; the number of followers is respectful. Throw in your knowledge of Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Twitter Chats, LinkedIn Groups, Facebook ads and whatever else you’ve dabbled in so far and you just might impress the social media novice whose organization needs social help, right now.

Self-Learning In today’s job market, there isn’t a single employer who doesn’t respect someone who took it upon themselves to learn a skill, or master a software program relevant to their organization. Demonstration of expertise using project management, Photoshop, Salesforce, Infusionsoft, Google Analytics and maybe even a little coding can take your resume from meh to marvelous Freelance Projects Remember that project you did for that busi-

ness that really needed your expertise Or the couple of weeks you spent at that nonprofit solving its biggest problem Those mini-projects weren’t real jobs, no but they were real experience. List every relevant project you’ve ever taken on. Display the impact you had on the organization you served (quantify ). Show your entrepreneurial spirit. And you’ll catch the attention of a hiring manager looking for someone not afraid to take on a project alone.

Theses, Studies and White Papers Did you head up a research project Write an industry relevant thesis that blew people away Did you lead a community-based study Each of these projects shows attention to detail, problem solving and analytical thinking three skills in high demand by nearly every employer. Again, show the impact of your work; and talk passionately about the mission. Employers don’t only want to know what you did they want to know why you did it.

Content Creation Have you begun blogging Guest blogging Have you begun to show your subject matter expertise in a podcast, or a video blog Maybe a YouTube channel Have you built a community of followers All of those things go on your resume Employers will respect that you are willing to let your thoughts be known, and aren’t afraid to stick your neck out. They’ll get a glimpse of your personality and passion. And if the fit is right they’ll develop a bond with the digital you, well before they call for an interview.

Industry Relevant Competitions Speaking of not being afraid to stick your neck out: relevant competitions online, through your community, industry associations, the local chamber of commerce, and through your alma mater, fraternity or sorority are a great way to punch up your resume. Although a bonus (instant credibility), winning isn’t necessary Just show that you have competed for the third consecutive time at the regional business plan competition, for example, and

entrepreneurial minded employers will be impressed. These organizations also make for great networking and keyword elements on your resume. An employer might say, You were in the Alpha Kappa Psi CASE competitions So was I And, just like that, a relationship has started and an advantage gained.

Anything Leadership Civic organizations, volunteer assignments, part-time retail jobs, heading up a fundraiser or a committee, campus ambassadorships anything that shows you were leading from out front must go on your resume.

Again, be sure to show your impact and talk about what you learned along the way.

By:Shabnam y:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor or most people, feeling happy and finding life meaningful are both important and related goals. But do happiness and meaning always go together While happiness and a sense of meaning often overlap, they also diverge in important and surprising ways.

As one might expect, people’s happiness levels were positively correlated with whether they saw their lives as meaningful. However, the two measures were not identical suggesting that what makes us happy may not always bring more meaning, and vice versa. To probe for differences between the two, it’s important to ask detailed questions about people’s feelings and moods, their relationships with others, and their day-to-day activities. Feeling happy was strongly correlated with seeing life as easy, pleasant, and free from difficult or troubling events. Happiness was also correlated with being in good health and generally feeling well most of the time. However, none of these things were correlated with a greater sense of meaning. Feeling good most of the time might help us feel happier, but it doesn’t necessarily bring a sense of purpose to our lives.

However, having enough money seemed to make little difference in life’s sense of meaning. People who are wealthy tend to be happier, however, they don’t see their lives as meaningful, while people who are not that wealthy tend to see their lives as more meaningful. This might be related to having a purpose in life, doing things that are important to and for them, being connected to people and stronger social ties

among those that matters.

Perhaps instead of saying that money doesn’t buy happiness, we ought to say money doesn’t buy meaning.

Not too surprisingly, our relationships with other people are related to both how happy we are as well as how meaningful we see our lives. Feeling more connected to others improved both happiness and meaning. However, the role we adopt in our relationships makes an important difference. In addition, spending more time with friends was related to greater happiness but not more meaning.

When it comes to thinking about how to be happier, many of us fantasize about taking more vacations or finding ways to avoid tasks. However, some tasks which don’t make us happy can, over time, add up to a meaningful life. Even routine activities - talking on the phone, cooking, cleaning, housework, meditating, emailing, praying, reading book and balancing finances - appeared to bring more meaning to people’s lives, but not happiness in the moment. To conclusion happiness can be attained in things which we already have but don’t realize the true meaning . o last time we were talking about our children or family members sharing their problems, tears, inner feelings with friends or counsellors but not with parents. They are more comfortable with outsiders but not with family.

I told you..... The parents out of their experience of life and age are well aware of many pros and cons. They do not know many new things but what they know about human nature and what is right and what is wrong in the long run. I told you so... are followed by You never listen to me... You are very careless... You never think... blah blah blah. Results - your children not regretting the mistake as much they regret sharing it with you. They also know that parents are right many times but nobody likes to be reminded or being pinpointed a lot of times. Actually most of the time parents are being protective. They love their children so much so that they want to spare their beloved from pain, suffering, shock, and trauma of life but they forget that lesson of life are not always learned in family room. This process of growing is most for every person.

On the other hand

Mom, why don’t you do it yourself, I have homework, it’s so much out of fashion, please behave properly, do not start your stories when my friends come, and seriously... etc etc. The grow-up so called stylish children think that parents are not up to the fashionable life style, parents should talk or behave in particular manner they are embarrassed by old and simple parents or house.

Balancing both ways

The elders have to be less overprotective, or cautious and let the children experience some things of life in their own way. The youngsters should learn to be tolerant and understanding about parent’s age, their generation gap etc. The elders also should accept the changing fast facts of life in some matters and try to find a workable solution. It is most very difficult, what are needed is little more patience and understanding broader mindset and readiness on both sides.

While their father did not encourage the business as he feared his daughters will gain fame — something that was not looked at benevolently in Pukhtun culture — the girls did not let that hinder them.

Rashmina, 24, and Pashmina, 23, started baking in 2010 a time when there was no concept of designer cakes or cupcakes in the whole province. They learnt the art of baking on a trial and error basis and today, their cakes are not only fulfilling the sweet tooth requirement of people in Peshawar, but are famous throughout Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The Khattak sisters have shared their secrets with women from remote areas of the province so that they can develop the art and become financially emancipated.

The Barricades Defying norms and starting a business without relying on anybody was by no means an easy undertaking for Khattak sisters. At first, they used to see designs and fascinating products on the internet and message the bakers to seek assistance. However, that did not work out.

I have seen fathers who are stubborn and think it is a taboo for girls to work like this even my father wanted to me to pursue dentistry in which I have a degree but I wanted to showcase my art and my mother was my greatest supporter, Rashmina added. The sisters said finding suppliers was difficult.

There was no one to guide us and we had to go alone in cabs to find boxes, printers and

talk to people about marketing, Pashmina id R h i said id h i t t att said.

Rashmina her di disappointment start was apparent but she stood her ground and continued her work despite hindrances.

I came to the conclusion that nobody will stand for you and you have to help yourself, she added.

According to Rashmina, people’s envy when her cakes did remarkably well was also apparent. It is but natural and today I am just glad people have learned a lot from my work and make recipes I created on my own.

The Trajectory Rashmina said she learnt the art on her own. After a series of trial and error proceedings, she realised what makes better cakes, what makes better toppings and what gives fondant cakes intricacy of design and finesse.

At the beginning there was no competition as the concept was new for the people in the city. People did not know what a designer cake was and now the first thing they want for an occasion is a designer cake, Rashmina said.

The sisters started taking orders on social media and very soon phones would not cease to ring at Meena’s Delight. Today, these cakes are made and sold nationally as well as internationally.

Khattak sisters purchase ingredients from abroad so ensure premium quality of their cakes. They want to open a caf in the city very soon that will offer customers a setting as sweet as their cakes.

Solidarity with Women The Khattak sisters believe nothing was unattainable if people strive hard enough.

Both sisters developed their business on their own because they believed in themselves. Every girl in K-P should pursue whatever she is good at everyone has a hidden talent which should be exhibited and polished, Rashmina said. She has taught baking to many girls in the provinces, particularly those from villages and far-flung areas so they can learn, cook and become independent.

here are several types of martyrs in Islam. A Hadith of Bokhari stated, Whoever is killed while protecting his property then he is a martyr, would apply to the people dying in the line of duty.

Flying Officer (Flg. Offr) Sikander Shah became the first martyr of our 65th G.D. (P) course when he crashed over the Jamrud firing range. Saber, F-86 aircraft piloted by him, exploded midair while pulling up after firing at the target.

Flying Officer, Najam Saeed, another course mate of ours flew as No.3 in the same formation and witnessed the crash. He narrated the accident to me that helped in putting this piece together. After leading the prestigious Sherdil’ formation of the T-37 aerobatic team at Risalpur academy, Najam also served as an instructor pilot of F-16 aircraft. He earned four-star green endorsements for safe flying and efficiently handling emergencies Sikander Shah was a lively, handsome and a likable intelligent officer of our course. Cadetship days of Lower Topa and Risalpur are filled with our association of good and tough times. Later in 1978, we served together in at Air Base Masroor as pilot officers. He belonged to No. 2 Squadron of T-33 aircraft while I was a part of the Air Traffic Control Squadron. He often responded with a smile at the naughty remarks of his course mates.

Sikander came from the family of renowned Indian actor Naseer-ud-din Shah and had a striking resemblance to him.

Sikander Shah was No. 2 and Najam followed as No. 3 in the formation. According to their preflight briefing on the ground, after takeoff they were to join in a close formation and set course for the Jamrud Firing range.

After joining in close formation they checked on radio with the Range Safety Officer (RSO) and carried out the spacer runthe first dry run over the firing range to create a desirable space between the aircrafts.

It is followed by firing with a dive over the target and pull-up to exit safely after releasing the weapons. They peeled off into a left hand gunnery circuit pattern and one after the other, they hit at the target maintaining a safe distance between their aircraft.

RSO used to be a squadron pilot. His job was to ensure a safe range for the required exercise- targets marked and laid out properly. He controlled and cleared all the aircraft for the exercise and passed on firing scores to the participating pilots. He also recorded all the range activities.

The formation carried hot guns only as it was a gunnery mission. The Saber F-86 aircraft had 6 M3 Browning machine guns of .50 caliber capable of carrying 300 rounds in each gun. After about halfway through the mission, as Najam started to roll in for the attack, Sikander ahead of him pulled up at the same time, after firing the bullets.

Through the corner of his left eye, Najam saw a big bright flash to his left around the position where Sikander should have been with his plane.

He turned his head towards the aircraft of Sikander expecting to see him pulling out of a dive in a left hand climbing turn in gunnery pattern. The controls shivered in his

He immediately called off the attack, pulled out of the target, radioed his leader Sqn. Ldr. Tariq and told him what he saw.

Tariq asked the RSO on the radio who had seen everything, but froze and remained dumbfounded in disbelief. After sometime, the RSO came to life and reported that Si-

kander had crashed. Najam inside the cockpit overwhelmed with horrible thoughts didn’t want to think the worst. He continued looking around for a parachute that wasn’t there.

Ordered by Sqn. Ldr. Tariq, Najam joined in close formation and reported the crash position to the Peshawar Control Tower. They circled over the firing range and headed back to the base. Peshawar Control tower took crash action and sent the search and rescue helicopter with a Flight Surgeon on board.

Najam, after reporting to all the commanders about the accident stood alone outside the squadron building in Peshawar. He kept looking towards the initial reporting position in the false hope of seeing Sikander returning with his plane -that was not to happen.

The right leg of Sikander was found a Kilometer away from the accident site. According to the postmortem report; he suffered more than 100 internal bone fractures, but surprisingly, the rest of his body remained intact. A typical smile spread over his lips when we saw his body before the burial.

He left us more than 36 years ago, but his ever smiling face comes to mind whenever we talk about him.

The Inquiring Board determined structural failure’ of one of the wings as the reason for his crash. It happened because of airframe fatigue. When Sikander started his pull out from the dive with 4 to 5 g’s, tremendous load imposed on the plane and broke the wing. The broken wing hit the fuel tank, immediately lighting the fire that exploded the aircraft in the air. Najam saw that same huge fireball. The explosion shocked the pilot, setting him unconscious. Because of low altitude, he hit the ground before taking any evasive action.

Najam registered few strange observations in his association with Sikander. After graduation, the Pak number allotted to Najam at first was transferred to Sikander later. (Pak number determined the seniority of a person

in the Air Force).

Najam believed that better gunnery equipment installed on a particular tail number aircraft resulted in better firing scores. Sikander was flying that aircraft. If asked, Sikander would have switched the aircraft with Najam.

Despite having a strong desire of asking to switch the aircraft with Sikandar, Najam struggled hard in his mind and avoided asking for the switch. He often wondered if the Pak number and the tail number of the aircraft played a role towards the crash of Sikander.

Najam carried a feeling from that day onwards that all the three members of Sikander’s formation were destined to die in an air crash. On 7th September 1980, aerobatic practice show at Masroor Air Base led to the crash of Sqn. Ldr. Tariq (Leader of Sikander’s formation). He embraced martyrdom performing an aileron roll over the base, while Najam witnessed his crash once again- this time from the ground.

Now he considers himself as someone who was destined witnessing the air crash of two other comrades. Najam retired as a Wing Commander from service and now lives in Toronto.
