NCOCapproves booster shot for health Airport COVID-19 testing for travellers 15-year-old Michigan teen charged in Oxford H.Sch

B.C. kids aged 5 to 11 can now get vaccinated. Here’s what you need to know

T

he first group of 5- to 11-yearchildren in B.C. can now be immunized against COVID-19. B.C. is the last province to start administering vaccines to kids because of distribution challenges linked to the recent flooding and distances to various corners of the province. Here is what you need to know if you want to get your child vaccinated or if haven’t yet made up your mind. How many kids are eligible to get the shot? Approximately 350,000 children aged five to 11 are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 pediatric vaccine, with the youngest kids being eligible on or after their fifth birthday. Is the pediatric vaccine different than the one for those 12 and older? The pediatric vaccine is a smaller dose. During dosing studies, vaccine manufacturer Pfizer compared the adult dose, which is 30 micrograms,

to various smaller doses. It concluded that one-third of an adult dose, or 10 micrograms, gave just as strong an immune response in younger children as the adult formulation. Who approved the vaccine for children? Health Canada reviewed the research provided by Pfizer. The independent regulator’s responsibility was to review safety data on how well the vaccine works in children that age and to review the manufacturing data. “This rigorous and independent review really can give us confidence that, as it’s approved by Health Canada, it is safe for use, and we can trust that in our children,” provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said in a news conference last week. Public health officials have said kids are less likely to get severely ill from COVID. To be Continued at page 6

Omicron: New variant ‘not a cause for panic’, says Biden

U

S president urges people to get vaccinated amid global concern over new strain WHO says poses ‘very high’ risk. Joe Biden has urged Americans to get COVID-19 jabs amid global alarm over the new Omicron coronavirus variant, but the US president says the strain should be considered a “cause for concern, not a cause for panic”. In remarks delivered at the White House on Monday, Biden said top United States health officials are consulting with leading vaccine makers and preparing for possible updates to account for Omi-

cron’s mutations. But he stressed that the US was in a good position to control Omicron’s potential spread without having to resort to lockdowns or more travel bans for now – beyond restrictions already imposed on eight southern African countries. “This variant is a cause for concern, not a cause for panic,” he said. “If you are vaccinated, but still worried about the new variant, get your booster. If you aren’t vaccinated, get that shot. Go get that first shot.” New COVID-19 variant: What we know about Omicron To be Continued at page 6

November inflation hits 11.5pc, highest in 20 months

SLAMABAD: An upward swing in consumer prices continued in November as inflation edged up to 11.5 per cent from 9.2pc, the highest increase noted in the past 20 months influenced by a record hike in fuel prices last month, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data showed on Tuesday. The massive rupee depreciation fuelled import-led inflation. Inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased to its highest level in 20 months — the period when global oil prices kept rising steadily undermining earlier gains. At the same time, prices of fresh vegetables, fruits and meat have also posted a persistent increase in major urban and rural centres. The average inflation during the July-November period rose to 9.32pc on a yearly basis. Inflation had started declining after surging

to 12.4pc in February 2020, mainly driven by a drop in prices of agricultural products. The trend is reversing now on the back of a rise in prices of petroleum products. In 2020-21, annual CPI inflation was recorded at 8.90pc against 10.74pc the preceding year. The monthly outlook report of finance ministry

shows Pakistan’s inflation rate is driven by demand factors, international commodity prices, exchange rate, seasonal factors and economic agents’ expectations concerning the future developments of these indicators. Year-on-year (YoY) inflation is marginally increased in the last two months. Going forward, this increase in inflation may be tempered by the seasonal profile whose contribution was positive in October but is usually about neutral in November. Besides government policy, administrative and relief measures may support to ease out the inflationary pressures. However, the prices of crude oil along with all other energy inputs are on the rise due to increasing global demand in post-Covid scenarios. Also, a rise in freight charges have made interna To be Continued at page 6

Narrated/Authority of Abdullah bin Umar Allah’s Apostle (SAW) said, “It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to will to stay for two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept ready with him.” Source: Sahih Bukhari -https://ahadith.co.uk

Steps Of Wealth Distribution See References Surah Al-Nisa 4. Verse 11 -14 & 176 llah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one’s estate. And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one’s parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. But if he had no children and the parents [alone] inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers [or sisters], for his mother is a sixth, after any bequest he [may have] made or debt. Your parents or your children - you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. [These shares are] an obligation [imposed] by Allah. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.

Making A Will

A

“Learn about inheritance and teach it, for it is half of knowledge, but it will be forgotten. It is the first thing that will be taken away from my nation”

T

- Prophet Muhammad (Ibn Majah)

he following is the sequence of spending and distribution of Mirath after the death of a person.

1: Funeral expenditure(modest) 2: Payment of debts/ loans 3: Pending commitments 4: Will - upto 1/3 of what remains 5: Distribution among heirs as prescribed

CALCULATING SHARES Step 1: Write the name of deceased, the date and year of death, the distributable wealth among heirs (last box in the above process). Step 2: List down all relatives who were alive at time of death of the deceased. Identify if any relative qualifies for extended Residuary [Res] Asbah category by writing “R” in front of them (male relatives through chain of males – see definitions). Step 3a: Go through table 1 and assign shares to each applicable heir based on the appropriate conditions. Step 3b: For the following 5 relations, if both male and female are present then ignore the females while assigning shares from table 1 and place (“) in their column. Their share will be extracted from table 2. These 5 relations are: 1) son [S] & daughter [D], 2) son’s son [SS] & son’s daughter [SD], 3) son’s son’s son [SSS] & son’s son’s daughter [SSD], 4) real brother [RB] & real sister [RS], 5) paternal brother [PB] & paternal sister [PS] Step 4 (this step can be skipped if “share from 24” column is used in Step 3): Find the lowest common multiple (LCM) of the denominators of the assigned shares and multiply each numerator with that factor. In all cases the denominator will be 24 or less. Eg: if assigned shares are 1/6, 1/2 and 1/8. Then the lowest common multiple (LCM) of the denominators 6, 2 and 8 is 24. The respective numerators will then be 4, 12 and 3 out of total 24 shares (common denominator). Step 5: Calculate the remaining shares. Add all assigned numerators and subtract the total from the common denominator. In above example the assigned shares are 4, 12 and 3 out of common denominator of 24. The sum of numerators is 4+12+3= 19. The remaining shares are 24-19= 5.

Step 6: Move from left  right on table 2. Assign all remaining shares to the 1st applicable category. If the category is among the five relations as mentioned in step 3b then males will get twice as much share as females in that category. In this case, multiply the number of males in the category by 2 and add it to number of females. Divide the assigned shares by this number and give 2 portions to males and 1 to each female. Eg: 2 Sons [S] and 2 Daughters [D] are assigned 12 shares. Multiply number of males by 2 (2 x2 = 4), then add to number of females (4+2=6). 12 shares will be divided in 6 (each portion is 2 shares) and then each males gets 2 shares each and female gets 1 share. In the end each son gets 4 shares and each daughter gets 2 shares form total 12 shares (ratio 2:1). Step 6b: If the shares are assigned to extended Residuary [Res] (Asbah) category while using Table 2, then use Table 3 to find out closed Res in relationship who shall receive these shares. Step 7: You should now have all the shares distributed among appropriate heirs. All other relatives of the deceased do not get any share in mirath. Now calculate each individual’s portion by dividing the shares in each category by the number of individuals in that category. Eg: If share of wife is 6, then for someone with 2 wives the share of each will be 3 out of 24. At times dividing the share will lead to a number with decimal, such as dividing 13 shares in 6 individuals with lead to 2.166/person. To avoid this you can multiply the whole column (all shares) by the number of divisions that are need. Eg: 13 x 6 = 78. Then each share will be 13 out of total 78. Keeping it in whole numbers make it simple and easy to understand. Step 8: Find the share in terms of wealth ($, acres of land, %, etc.). The following formula is used: (Share of the person / Total shares) x (total wealth) = Wealth share of each person Source: alhudainstitute.ca

W

hen should I write my will?

As soon as possible. In sound mind. • “It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to will to stay for two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept ready with him.” – Prophet Muhammad (Sahih Bukhari)

How much wealth can I will?

A will can only be for up to 1/3rd (33.3%) of the wealth • Narrated by Saad bun Abu Waqqas (RA): The Prophet came visiting me while I was (sick) in Makkah. He (Prophet) said, “May Allah bestow His Mercy on Ibn Afra (Saad bin Abu Waqqas). I said, “O Allah’s Messenger!

May I will all my property (in charity)?”

He said, “No.” I said, “Then may I will half of it?” He said, “No”. I said, “One third?” He said, “Yes, one third, yet even one third is too much. It is better for you to leave your inheritors wealthy than to leave them poor begging others, and whatever you spend for Allah’s sake will be considered as a charitable deed even the handful of food you put in your wife’s mouth. Allah may lengthen you age so that some people may benefit by you, and some other be harmed by you.” At that time Saad had only one daughter. (Sahih Bukhari) • Narrated by Ibn’ Abbas (RA); I recommend that people reduce the portion of what they bequeath by will to the fourth (1/4th), for Allah’s Messenger said, “Onethird, yet even third is too much.” (Sahih Bukhari, book of will and testaments)

What are the rules for will?

Will cannot be made for someone who is already getting a share in inheritance. Nor it can deny anyone their due share. It can be used for someone who will otherwise not get a share (eg: orphan grandchild, non-Muslim family member, etc) or can be used in charity. • “Allah has appointed for everyone who

has a right what is due to him, and no bequest must be made to an heir.” – Prophet Muhammad (Abu Dawud & Ibn Majah)

When is will applicable?

Will is only applicable/ actionable AFTER death. It can be changed and updated again and again during life time of a person. The final version will be used.

What if someone makes a wrong will? (Such as using more than 1/3rd of wealth, making a will in favor of a heir who is already getting a share or denying share from legitimate heir)

Making a wrong will is a major sin.

It should be corrected during life of the person, otherwise heirs should correct it after the death of the deceased. • “A man may do good deeds for 70 years but if he acts unjustly when he leaves his last testament, the wickedness of his deed will be sealed upon him, and he will enter the Fire. If a man acts wickedly for 70 years but is just in his last testament, the goodness of his deed will be sealed upon him and he will enter the Garden (of Paradise).” – Prophet Muhammad (Musnad Ahmad & Ibn Majah)

What are the practical steps needed to make a will?

Here are the essential items for a legitimate will • A written or verbal will that is witnessed by two people who are: believers, honest, and do not have any conflict of interest in inheritance or will. • The laws of the land where you reside should also be fulfilled so the will can be executed legally. For example, in USA, a will needs to be written and signed by two witnesses who do not have any direct benefit or conflict in inheritance or will. USA law allows the distribution of wealth as per Islamic laws if this is mentioned in the will. Otherwise the default distribution will be as per country and state rules. Source: alhudainstitute.ca

Disinheritance of beneficiaries Prayer Schedule in Greater Vancouver Allah has ordained inheritance in the Dec 03-17, 2021, Rabi ul II 28=Jamadi ul I 12, 1443H Quran. You do not have the authority, as a believing Muslim, to disregard it. Doing Isl. Dt. Day Date Fajar Sunr Dhur Shafi / Hanfi ZawalAsarDhuhr Asar Maghrib so would mean you are doing an injustice.

Example:

Idrees is a Muslim who has three adult children. He has not spoken to them in 10 years after a rough divorce with their mother. He wants to disinherit his children. Instead, he wants to give everything to the Masjid. Idrees cannot do this in Islam. Even though giving money to the Masjid, by itself, is beneficial, he cannot do this for more than 1/3 of his estate. The rest must go to his rightful heirs in Islam. Failure to do this would make him unjust. Also, he and his children should make efforts to communicate. Muslims should also never cut off family ties.

Airport COVID-19 testing for travellers arriving NCOC approves booster shot for health workers, in Canada could start any time, minister says immunocompromised people and those over 50 OTTAWA -- The new on-arrival COVID-19 testing and isolation requirements for all air travellers coming from outside of Canada other than from the United States could come into effect at any time, depending on the airport, according to Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos.Speaking to reporters on his way into the House of Commons, Duclos said that the directive to implement the new policy has been given, and now it’s up to each airport where international flights are landing to get the logistics in place.“There are airports in Canada which can start doing that really quickly because they have excess capacity, other airports will take a bit more time,” he said. On Tuesday the federal government announced that international travellers will soon be tested at the airport when they land in Canada, on top of the existing pre-departure test requirement. Now, Duclos said that if an upon-arrival test is not possible, travellers would be given a take-home test. “While they wait for that test to be known, they isolate themselves and when they get a

negative test, they can exit out of the isolation,” he said. According to the government, those who are vaccinated would have to isolate until they get a negative result, and those who are unvaccinated will continue to have to isolate for the full 14 days and test on day one and day eight of their quarantine. While currently it takes an average of one day to receive test results, Duclos said that the “service standard” is three days and it could take longer to get results once this policy is fully operational, with the expectation being that officials will be conducting approximately 32,000 tests per day... The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Wednesday approved a booster shot of Covid-19 vaccines for healthcare workers, immunocompromised people and those aged over 50 years, while discussing the spread of the new coronavirus variant Omicron across the world. Although the statement issued by the NCOC did not say which Covid-19 vaccine would be administered as booster shots, it did say that the shots would be free and administered six months after the last vaccine dose. During its meeting today, the forum discussed epidemic curve chart data for Pakistan, the national vaccine strategy and disease prevalence across the country. It also discussed cities’ progress in vaccinating their residents against Covid-19. The forum stressed that the Omicron variant was spreading fast globally and the only protection against it was vaccination. Subsequently, the NCOC decided to take strict measures to enforce the “obligatory vaccination regime” from December 1 (today) and directed the provinces and authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance policy

regarding its implementation. The forum was informed that 40 call centres have been established across the country to contact those who have not yet received their second doses. The number of call centres would be increased in the future. Provincial health ministers and chief secretaries gave presentations during the meeting, highlighting initiatives taken to boost the vaccination campaign, improve testing numbers and establish call centres. “All provinces will start vaccination outreach campaigns immediately to [achieve] the vaccination targets,” the statement added. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi welcomed on Monday Saudi Arabia’s move to request an extraordinary session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and announced that Pakistan had offered to host the meeting in Islamabad on December 17. According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FO), Qureshi said Pakistan “fully endorses” the initiative taken by Saudi Arabia and expressed confidence that other OIC members would also back the proposal. Saudi Arabia, which is the chair of the OIC summit, made the call for the extraordinary session the same day, according to state-run Saudi Press Agency. The agency reported that the meeting had been called to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and “pathways for an urgent humanitarian response”, acknowledging Pa-

kistan’s offer to host the summit. Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan on August 15, the country — already struggling with drought and severe poverty after decades of war — has seen its economy all but collapse, raising the spectre of an exodus of refugees. According to the FO’s statement, Qureshi, too, highlighted the need for providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan in these difficult times. “Afghanistan is a founding member of the OIC. As part of the Islamic Ummah, we are bound by fraternal bonds of amity and brotherhood with the people of Afghanistan,” he said, stressing that “today, our Afghan brothers and sisters need us more than ever before.”Describing the situation in the warn-torn country, he said Afghanistan currently “faces a serious humanitarian situation — millions of Afghans, including women and children, confront an uncertain future due to [the] shortage of food, medicines, and other essential life supplies”. And the advent of winter had exacerbated this humanitarian crisis, the foreign minister added. He emphasised the need for the OIC to “step in to help our Afghan brethren”. Source: dawn.com

House prices in Canada will rise higher Pakistan offers to host OIC summit proposed by Saudi Arabia to discuss Afghan humanitarian crisis in 2022, real-estate report says

TORONTO - Housing prices in Canada are expected to increase steadily in 2022, with inter-provincial migration continuing in many regions and a short supply of homes in those areas pushing up costs, according to Re/Max’s housing market outlook report published Wednesday. Sale prices are projected to go up by 9.2 per cent on average across the country next year, the real-estate company estimates. It would follow an already “sensational” year in terms of sales and price appreciation, Re/ Max’s president says. “In the history of our nation, I don’t know of, certainly not in my tenure, of more than 95% of markets being in seller’s market territory,” he told CTVNews.ca in a phone interview. “So it can’t be overstated enough how strong the market was in Canada in 2021.” That momentum will likely carry forward into next year, Alexander says, with 36 of 38 markets across the country poised to maintain their seller’s status.

Another trend he suspects will continue is inter-provincial migration as investors look for more affordable places to set up shop. The ability to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic has given some homebuyers the flexibility to shop in different places.“Remote work has really allowed people to set up in ways that weren’t possible before the pandemic,” Alexander said. “We’’e hearing of some people that have moved to a different province but still hold their job in the province they left.”........... .”Source: ctvnews.ca

8 people taken to hospital after collision involving pedestrians in London, Ont. Inevitable that Omicron variant will come to Paki-

Eight people were taken to hospital after a serious collision involving pedestrians in London, Ont., Tuesday evening, officials say. London police said they were called at around 6:45 p.m. to the crash on Riverside Drive. “We received a call in relation to multiple pedestrians struck just west of Wonderland Road on Riverside Drive and upon arrival, we learned that multiple vehicles were struck as well,” Const. Sandasha Bough said. Bough said “a number of pedestrians” were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. In an update shared late Tuesday night, police said “while it is still early on in the investigation, there is nothing to indicate that this was an intentional act.” Miranda Bothwell, spokesperson for Middlesex-London Paramedic Services, said a

total of eight patients were taken to hospital. She described the condition of three of the patients at the time of transport to the hospital as “very critical” while the rest were reported to be in serious condition. One person was believed to have been treated at the scene. “Due to the severity of the injuries, we’re working very closely with [the] London Police Service and are unable to disclose the age ranges of the patients until next of kin have been notified,” Bothwell said. “While it is still early on in the investigation, there is nothing to indicate that this was an intentional act,” police said in a brief update late Tuesday night. Earlier, Bough said the collision was not a hit-and-run and that all those involved remained at the scene. “We are investigating what took place tonight and we’ll be able to share updates as they become available,” Bough said. London police Chief Stephen Williams tweeted that people should “avoid speculation about the nature of the incident.”.... Source:/toronto.ctvnews.ca

stan, we have weeks to reduce its threat: Asad Umar

Federal Planning Minister Asad Umar warned on Monday that the latest concerning variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, will inevitably come to Pakistan and the country had only a few weeks to contain its threat. Addressing a press conference alongside Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, Umar stressed the need for citizens to get vaccinated and complete their doses. “This [strain] has to spread in the whole world as we saw before that when a variant comes, the world is so interconnected that it is impossible to stop it,” the minister said, adding that vaccination was the most logical solution to curb the threat. He said the initial information the government had received was that although Omicron was a “very dangerous” variant, vacci-

nation will be effective against it. “So it is my appeal to Pakistanis, particularly those who’ve gotten one dose to get the second dose because this is one effective thing we have to protect ourselves from the danger of this variant,” Umar said. He noted that a big vaccination campaign was being started in the provinces in the next 2-3 days, saying there was a need to speed it up further. “This variant will come to Pakistan, and we have next 2-3 weeks to reduce its threat.” In view of the variant, Umar said additional measures were being taken such as increasing the number of daily tests — particularly in high-risk areas — which had previously been reduced as the positivity rate declined. He added that the contact-tracing system would be revived as well and emphasised the need to “rejuvenate” it with more resources and increased efficiency. Additionally, consultation will be completed by Tuesday on administering booster shots to the population most at risk from the coronavirus, he said.A day earlier, the Sindh health department had decided to inoculate all residents with a booster shot of Pfizer keeping in view the increased risk of transmission and reinfection posed by Omicron. Mentorship needs Everywhere

N a recent discussion on the role of teachers in schools and universities, many aspects of their demanding job came up. Whilst it is undeniable that most teachers work really hard to meet their targets, sometimes a focused assessment of how they are working also merits attention. ‘Work smart’ is a mantra for those who have learnt to use it effectively. Chasing students to complete their assignments on time, trying to motivate students who are reluctant to study, conducting tutorials or remedial classes for those who need extra help are just some of the avenues teachers find themselves engaged in. As they help students bridge learning gaps, many invest time and effort way beyond their job description and often feel discouraged when they don’t see results. The truth is, we often end up churning the same wheel with increasing effort and continue to see disappointing results. These efforts, although critical, cannot work on an ad hoc basis. No matter what their age, students need mentoring and, until mentorship programmes are institutionalised and embedded in our education system, we may continue to face the challenges that can easily be avoided. A mentor is typically an adviser, teacher, role model and friend. It’s a matching process where skills,

personality and mindset come together to establish collaboration that is goal-oriented and targets challenges specifically.

A sense of belonging is crucial to student motivation.

Mentoring isn’t just useful for students. In fact, studies show that teachers need mentoring at every stage of their career, even in leadership roles, and it shouldn’t just be the responsibility of deans, directors and school managers to help and support junior staff. A formal mentorship programme is well structured, with clearly defined focus areas, timelines, feedback mechanisms and reflective conversations. A successful mentorship programme can potentially subvert existing biases in institutions, help staff increase their skills set, enhance staff motivation and improve retention rates. Often, senior and high-performing employees can share their vision, ideas and opportunities for development with their colleagues. Interestingly, mentorship has a long history as it sprung up at a time when the only way to acquire professional or vocational skills was by spending time with more experienced colleagues, learning from their personal narratives, and having someone generally watch closely so mistakes wouldn’t be repeated. Whilst

mentorship was a little intimidating with the ‘big brother is watching you’ approach, it also ensured integration at several levels of professional hierarchy and helped bypass the isolation and exclusivity that is the hallmark of many educational institutions today. Mentorship programmes that operate in group settings, or with external links with other institutions have the added benefit of wider learning networks, creating opportunities for collaboration between institutions and helping teachers acquire skills that may not be taught internally. As mentors talk about their own experiences, appearing fallible and approachable, a level of trust through a recognition of authenticity develops and becomes pervasive — leading to greater cohesion, empathy and positive regard among employees. Mentoring also helps contribute to a positive ethos by changing employees’ misguided perceptions. For example, often students and staff feel they will be judged incompetent if they ask for advice. Through mentorship programmes, students may find a sense of belonging to the institution, as they establish a connection with those interacting with them. Research shows a sense of belonging is essential to student motivation, and is particularly relevant in higher education.

It’s important to remember that a mentor ‘feeds’ the process but does not ‘feast on it’. Most mentoring programmes work when pursued diligently with consistency and a stringent regard for the outcomes. Most informal mentoring at institutions where a wellmeaning teacher may decide to support a student — or a colleague may help out another through a tough situation — is not a constructive process that can culminate into sustainable goal-setting. Formal mentorship programmes, on the other hand, have the power to change the trajectory of students’ lives by creating pathways. Mentoring students gives teachers a more rewarding teaching experience, helps them stay connected with students and keeps them aware of individual students’ capabilities and challenges. In fact, mentorship can help teachers identify the grey areas in learning so quickly that many issues can be nipped in the bud. Mentoring also minimises behavioural disruptions, making classroom management easier. Students usually don’t want to be told what to do. They need a guide on the side to show them what they can do.

Omicron: New variant ‘not a cause for panic’, says Biden

News Cont from Pg 1

Biden added that his chief medical adviser, Dr Anthony Fauci, expects current vaccines to work against the new variant, with boosters enhancing protection. “We’ll fight this variant with scien-

tific and knowledgeable actions and speed, not chaos and confusion,” he said. The US earlier this month expanded its recommendation for booster jabs to all adults, but an estimated 47 million US adults have not yet been vaccinated, according to data from the US

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A ban on travel into the US from South Africa and seven other African nations came into effect on Monday, as countries around the world have imposed travel restrictions over the past several days amid concerns over Omicron. The point of

the [travel] restriction is to give us time to get people vaccinated,” Biden said on Monday. No cases of the Omicron variant have been reported in the US so far, but Fauci has warned the virus is probably already present in the country..... Source: aljazeera.com

Where can I learn more about how the vaccine is safe for kids? The province has provided various online links to several experts speaking about the vaccine’s safety. BC Children’s Hospital has provided this information sheet. Have there been any adverse events for B.C. children aged 12 to 17 who got the vaccine?

Officials have said 133 adverse events have been recorded following immunization of children in that age group. Most of them have been mild, such as fever, a headache that lasts for several days, or a rash and swelling at the site of the injection. Source: globalnews.ca

claimed that taking into account new price impulses in November and the low base effect, inflation would remain between 8.5 and 9.5 per cent, but the November inflation has already surpassed the projected figure.

B.C. kids aged 5 to 11 can now get vaccinated. Here’s what you need to know

News Cont from Pg 1 So why should they get vaccinated? Henry said it’s important for a variety of reasons, such as allowing children and their families to get over some of the more severe pandemic disruptions, especially as the fourth wave paired with the Delta variant continue.

Although B.C. has recorded few cases of hospitalization among children, kids in this age group now make up 20 per cent of current cases. The vaccine also reduces the risk of transmission to children’s close contacts, particularly people who are older or who are at risk of more severe illness.

‘Adversity can bring out the best in people’: Latest update on current storm and B.C. flood recovery

With dozens of weather warnings still in effect during a lull in the latest storm striking southern and coastal British Columbia, officials say it’s hard to tell what the impact will be when it’s all over. Speaking at a news conference Wednesday morning, at a time when conditions had calmed, Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth said there was more heavy rain to come before it could be determined whether any major damage was caused in the latest bout. A third weather system, given the name “atmospheric river” by meteorologists, is passing over a large part of the province, some of which is still recovering from flooding caused by mid-November storms. The term refers to a narrow region in the atmosphere that transports water vapour in a column, almost like a river in the sky.The systems result in days of relentless rain, and led to flooding and fatal mudslides in B.C. The impacts of the first of the intense storms are still being felt, including in Abbotsford where farms were flooded and thousands of animals died, and on major highways that were partially destroyed and are still closed weeks later. The third of these storms began its trek across the southern half of B.C., and while, at the time Farnworth spoke shortly before noon, things had calmed, he said wanted

to “make it clear to everyone that this storm is not over.”He said a “significant” part of the storm was still to come, later in the day. “The extreme weather events we’ve been experiencing are unprecedented, and many parts of our province are experiencing heavy rainfall … The full extent of the damage from this latest storm remains to be seen,” Farnworth said. The province is monitoring conditions closely, some areas are under evacuation order or alert, flood warnings and watches have been issued and some highways were closed as a precaution.“Our top priority remains public safety,” he said.“I want to thank British Columbians for their vigilance, for being prepared and for keeping themselves and their neighbours safe. When we all work together and do our part, it makes a huge difference.” He called this an “extremely challenging time” for the province. The storms followed a challenging wildfire season in B.C., as well as a heat wave that claimed hundreds of lives – all while in the middle of a global pandemic. He urged anyone feeling anxious or overwhelmed to turn to professionals and other resources when needed. The minister noted an online hub set up for flood response information includes a range of virtual mental health resources, including free and low-cost counselling. https://www2.gov. bc.ca/gov/content/natural-disaster/support/ home“I’ve seen an incredible outpouring of support and comradery during this disaster. OPEC+ mulls oil output as Omicron Erdogan says Turkey’s interest rates will continue to fall uncertainty weighs on markets Concerns are also rife over how effective current COVID-19 vaccines may be against the new variant. By Wednesday, oil clawed back some of those losses as the market looked to the OPEC meeting. Global benchmark Brent crude settled down 0.75 percent at $68.71 a barrel while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were trading 1.21 percent lower at $65.38. But they are still off October highs, when a global energy crunch saw Brent reach $86.70 a barrel and WTI $84.65 a barrel.

The conversation around oil has changed in recent days as the US taps reserves and fears over the new coronavirus variant grow. OPEC and its allies are on high alert this week when they meet to decide whether to stick with their planned oil output increase or hold off until more is known about the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries will meet with its allies led by Russia, a grouping known as OPEC+, on Thursday. They’ll discuss how to assess the potential impact of the Omicron variant on crude demand, as well as moves by the United States and other countries to tap their strategic oil reserves to cool blistering prices. The current plan is to add to global markets 400,000 barrels of crude per day. “OPEC+ is dealing with some bearish unknowns as they try to process what’s going on with the Omicron variant,” said Louise Dickson, senior analyst at Rystad Energy. Oil prices had the largest daily drop – $10 a barrel – since March 2020 on Friday as news of the Omicron variant hit the headlines, kindling fears of fresh business-sapping coronavirus restrictions. Several countries have already enacted a new wave of travel restrictions.

Oil & Omicron

Oil, stock and even cryptocurrency markets were rattled after the World Health Organization on Friday declared Omicron a “variant of concern”. The news spawned concerns that business-sapping restrictions to contain the virus’s spread could be introduced again, and slow the global economic recovery. For oil exporters, that means the insatiable appetite of late for crude could be curtailed. “OPEC+ has been relatively conservative on oil demand, saying demand is still fragile and weak,” said Dickson. “I think the market sentiment right now is that if this is another Delta-type variant, there could be an extreme dent in oil demand consumption.” Rystad Energy’s base-case scenario is that the group will hold their 400,000 barrels per day increase or slightly cut it. Global health authorities are racing to try and gain a better understanding of Omicron, while makers of COVID-19 vaccines have started trials to gauge how effective their current jabs are against the new variant. Against that backdrop of uncertainty, OPEC+ is still expected to make a policy decision by Thursday. Source: ctvnews.ca

started its current easing cycle in September and lowered the benchmark rate down by 4 percentage points to 15%. “Our country has now come to the point of breaking this vicious cycle, and there is no turning back from here,” Erdogan said. The lira extended losses after Erdogan’s remarks, falling as much as 8.1% against the U.S. dollar. It was trading 6.4% lower at 13.7058 per U.S. dollar as of 11:07 p.m. in Istanbul. Pentagon to review deadly 2019 US bombings in Syria

United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has ordered a review into US military bombings in Syria in March 2019 that the New York Times recently reported killed dozens of civilians during the battle for the final stronghold of ISIL (ISIS). Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby announced the probe on Monday, saying it would be led by General Michael Garrett, the head of US Army Forces Command. Earlier this month, the US military acknowledged that civilians may have been killed in the bombings in Baghouz, near the Iraqi border in 2019. At the time, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were leading the fight on the ground with American air support.“Likely a majority of those killed in school, however, and the shooting occurred were also combatants at the time of the a few hours later. Bouchard didn’t say what had worried school officials. He said investigators believe the gun was already in the 1,700-student school. “There is nothing that he could have faced that would warrant senseless, absolutely brutal violence on other kids,” the sheriff said, noting that Crumbley had an additional 18 rounds of ammunition when he was arrested. In court, Keast said Crumbley entered a bathroom with a backpack and came out with a semi-automatic handgun, firing at students while moving down the hallway. 15-year-old Michigan teen charged in Oxford High School shooting

The parents of a teenager accused of killing four students at a school in the US state of Michigan were summoned to discuss his behaviour just a few hours before the violence, a sheriff said. The disclosure was made on Wednesday as Ethan Crumbley, 15, was charged as an adult with two dozen crimes, including murder, attempted murder and terrorism for a shooting on Tuesday at Oxford High School in Oakland County.“He deliberately brought the handgun that day with the intent to murder as many students as he could,” assistant prosecutor Marc Keast said while successfully arguing for no bail for Crumbley and a transfer to jail from a juvenile facility. No motive was offered. But prosecutor Karen McDonald said the shooting was premeditated, based on a “mountain of digital evidence” against Crumbley.. Investigators found that he had recorded a video the night before the bloodshed in which he discussed killing students, Lt Tim Willis of the sheriff ’s office said.“This was not just an impulsive act,” McDonald told reporters. During his arraignment, Crumbley replied, “Yes, I do,” when asked if he understood the charges. Defence attorney Scott Kozak entered a plea of not guilty. Earlier, Sheriff Mike Bouchard told reporters that Crumbley’s parents were called to the school on Tuesday “for behavior in the classroom that was concerning”. The teen remained

Current knowledge about Omicron

Researchers in South Africa and around the world are conducting studies to better understand many aspects of Omicron and will continue to share the findings of these studies as they become available. Transmissibility: It is not yet clear whether Omicron is more transmissible (e.g., more easily spread from person to person) compared to other variants, including Delta. The number of people testing positive has risen in areas of South Africa affected by this variant, but epidemiologic studies are underway to understand if it is because of Omicron or other factors. Severity of disease: It is not yet clear

whether infection with Omicron causes more severe disease compared to infections with other variants, including Delta. Preliminary data suggests that there are increasing rates of hospitalization in South Africa, but this may be due to increasing overall numbers of people becoming infected, rather than a result of specific infection with Omicron. There is currently no information to suggest that symptoms associated with Omicron are different from those from other variants. Initial reported infections were among university students—younger individuals who tend to have more mild disease—but understanding the level of sever-

ity of the Omicron variant will take days to several weeks. All variants of COVID-19, including the Delta variant that is dominant worldwide, can cause severe disease or death, in particular for the most vulnerable people, and thus prevention is always key. Source: who.int/news

TORONTO -- In light of the new variant Omicron emerging, the World Heath Organization (WHO) has put out new advice regarding international travel, including that those over the age of 60 years old should refrain from travelling.

The organization put out an advisory on Tuesday listing ways that countries and individuals can attempt to stay safe and minimize the risk posed by Omicron. One of the main points was that people who are at a higher risk of developing severe disease if they contract COVID-19 — people who are sick, immunocompromised, have comorbities such as heart disease, cancer. Scientists in South Africa identified a new version of the novel coronavirus last week, which was quickly labelled a variant of con-

cern and dubbed Omicron. Although not much is known about Omicron at this stage, the new variant seems to have a high number of mutations that make it different from other variants, raising concerns that it could prove to be more transmissible, or able to reinfect those who had COVID-19 previously. The identification of a new variant has led to a number of countries, including Canada, to announce temporary travel bans and other health measures intended to stop the variant from spreading. However, several cases

of Omicron have been detected in more than one Canadian province so far..... “In addition, all travellers should be reminded to remain vigilant for signs and symptoms of COVID-19, to get vaccinated when it is their turn and to adhere to public health and social measures at all times and regardless of vaccination status, including by using masks appropriately, respecting physical distancing, following good respiratory etiquette and avoiding crowded and poorly ventilated spaces,” the advisory stated. About 30 countries have closed their borders to some countries and others have imposed stricter measures to curb the spread of the Omicron variant. The newly detected coronavirus variant has forced countries to tighten their borders just as many were beginning to reopen to foreign travel. Nations are adopting differing levels of border control with countries such as Israel, Morocco and Japan closing their borders entirely, while others have only tightened COVID testing at the border. The map below shows countries that have imposed travel bans. It will be updated as more information becomes available.

will need to quarantine, even if fully vaccinated. Japan – Japan closed its borders to noncitizens for one month, this includes foreign exchange students and those travelling for business. Morocco – Morocco suspended all incoming flights for two weeks.

China – China already had stringent border controls in place, with only citizens and resident permit holders allowed into the country. Israel – Israel banned foreigners from entering the country for 14 days. Israeli citizens will be able to come back to the country but

Angola – Australia – Brazil – Cambodia – Canada – Canada banned non-citizens who have travelled to Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe since November 12. Egypt – Egypt halted direct flights from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Fiji – Fiji already had strict border controls, and only citizens can enter the country. Indonesia – Indonesia banned any foreigners who spent the last 14 days in Botswana,

Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Italy ,Kuwai, Netherlands,New Zealand – Oman ,Rwanda, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Philippines –France –Germany Pakistan – Pakistan closed its borders to Botswana, Hong Kong, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa. CANMORE, ALTA. -- Scientists around the world are racing to learn more about the newly discovered B.1.1.529 coronavirus variant, now known as Omicron, to see how

it compares to other variants of concern. The important questions – like how transmissible it is, how good it is at evading immunity from vaccines or past illness, and whether it causes more severe illness – remain to be answered. While some scientists say it will be weeks before we get a clear picture of how Omicron will impact the pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday it expects to have more information on the transmissibility of the variant within days.. What we do know about this variant is that it contains more than 30 mutations in the spike protein, which allows it to bind to human cells and gain entry to the body – a factor that has elevated concerns for some scientists. WHAT IS A MUTATION?

First, it’s important to remember that mutations to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, have been expected since the early days of the pandemic. That’s because mutations always arise as viruses spread – it’s how they ensure their own survival. According to researchers from Yale University, SARS-CoV-2 gains access to our cells using its “corona” – a layer of protein spikes that fit into our cells like a lock and key – where it makes copies of its genomes. But during that process, errors are inevitably introduced into the code, causing a mutation or variant. Sometimes those mutations are harmless. But other times, like in the case of the Delta variant, the virus can change to become more transmissible or cause more severe ill-

ness. “What we have seen with other viruses is, over time, they mutate in various ways. And one of the ways that they can mutate is to actually get a little bit less severe because there’s a bit of a fitness cost to the virus,” Dr. Susy Hota, infectious disease expert at Toronto’s University Health Network told CTV’s Your Morning Wednesday. “If it starts to kill off its hosts a little bit too early, it just won’t replicate. And that’s the goal of a virus, is to make more copies of itself and persist over time.” Hota notes that COVID-19 has held its advantage with previous variants because it tends to have infections that last for quite a while, giving it plenty of opportunity to spread from person to person. On 26 November 2021, WHO designated the variant B.1.1.529 a variant of concern, named Omicron, on the advice of WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAG-VE). This decision was based on the evidence presented to the TAG-VE that Omicron has several mutations that may have an impact on how it behaves, for example, on how easily it spreads or the severity of illness it causes. Here is a summary of what is currently known.

The holiday season is almost here! Here is how to prepare! By: Shums,

I

Asma through the New Year’s celebrations. Include

it all: family traditions, church or work or community events you need or want to participate in, people you want to give gifts to, food or gifts you want to make, meals you want to serve, parties you plan to host or attend, etc. After you’ve captured it all, take a look and ask yourself: How realistic is your list (keeping in mind daily commitments, stage of life you’re in, etc.)? What can you cut from the list and still have the kind of holiday season you want to have? What can you move around or change now to set yourself up to have the time and energy you need to do the things you actually want to do?

t might be too soon to start celebrating the holidays, but it’s not too soon to give a little thought to a few small things you can do now to prepare for the best holiday season yet. It’s not a bad idea to spend a little time in the early fall thinking about and planning ahead for the holidays. While it might be a little early to get the holiday decorations out, still there are a 2. Develop a budget for the holidays. few things we can do now to help make the Think about how much money you’re willing to set aside for each person you want to holidays less stressful and more joyful. give a gift to. Having a budget written down 1. Plan ahead. Sit down with a cup of something and a note- now might help you resist the urge to overbook or your computer and your calendar, spend as the holidays get closer. and do a mind dump of all the things you If the budget is an issue, take steps now to usually do or need or want to do during the avoid uncomfortable situations during the holidays, starting maybe from mid-October holidays. Talk to extended family about skip-

ping gifts, or giving gifts only to the children, or drawing names and setting a cap on the amount (so nobody feels embarrassed because somebody else gave a more extravagant gift).

3. Shop ahead.

The steps above will help make it easier for you to get your holiday shopping sooner rather than later. If you have the list of people you want to give gifts to and then brainstorm ideas for gifts for each, you’ll have it top-ofmind when you’re out and can be watching for those perfect gifts and watch for sales on the things you want to give.

4. Plan some fun events for yourself and your family. Now might be a great time to start investigating the options for memory-making fam-

ily activities during the holiday season. What does your community offer? What special sights are available near where you live? Several members of the TPW Community use this approach. Alison said, “One thing I hope to do in the next month is plan some fun holiday activities/outings. I’m going to check all the surrounding areas and compile a list of festivals/parades, attractions we can enjoy to really get the most out of the season. The holidays can be stressful for many reasons, including financial stress, unrealistic expectations, and packed calendars. Implementing these tips on how to prepare your mindset for the holidays now will help you to avoid overwhelm and enjoy yourself and your friends and family this holiday season. Premier and parliamentary secretary’s statement on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

P

remier John Horgan and Grace Lore, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, have released the following statement on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: “Each year, from Nov. 25 to Dec. 10, governments, organizations, communities and individuals band together to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.“These 16 days are a time to rally together and demand an end to violence against women, girls, Two-Spirit, trans and genderdiverse people. “Every day, so many people bravely step forward to break the cycle of domestic violence, end the silence and stigma around sexual assault, and seek safety and healing for themselves and their families.“Every day, community organizations, advocacy groups, sexual assault centres, victim services and transition houses work tirelessly to support survivors and their communities with expertise and compassion. “We know that throughout this pandemic and during times of emergency, gender-based violence increases and vulnerable people are at an even greater risk. We recognize the suffering of the many thousands of people who live under a constant threat of violence, especially during these uncertain and challenging times. “We also grieve friends, family and community members who have been stolen from us by violence, including thousands of Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people who have been murdered or who are missing in Canada. “Grieving those who have been lost is impor-

tant, but on its own it is not enough. We must all work to stop the violence and support survivors. During these days of activism, we reaffirm our resolve to work actively every day throughout the year to end violence against women. “As a government, we recognize our responsibility to address gender-based violence. We are delivering on a plan to end gender-based violence and bring people and services together with a common goal, and ensure survivors have access to the supports they need. “While gender-based violence occurs in all communities and cultures, Indigenous women and girls, racialized people, transgender people, non-binary people and others in the 2SLGBTQ+ community, as well as those with disabilities, are at the greatest risk of being targeted and face the most barriers accessing services. “Our work must continue to centre these survivors. “Everyone deserves to feel safe in our province. Our family members, friends, colleagues and neighbours should not have to worry about their safety getting home or being at home. “Stopping gender-based violence, domestic violence and sexual violence is everyone’s business. If you see that something is wrong, if you hear that something is wrong, speak up. “Anyone who is in danger should call 911. If you or someone you know is being abused, or if you are concerned about someone’s safety, call or text VictimLink BC through its toll-free 24-7 confidential, multilingual telephone service at 1 800 563-0808 or by email: VictimLinkBC@bc211. ca “The safety and well-being of all people depend on everyone taking action to help end this kind of violence and make our province safer.“Let’s work together to end gender-based violence by challenging the behaviour that results in harm, breaking the silence that allows abusers to commit these crimes and pledging to make our province safer for everyone.” Source: news.gov.bc.ca

Power seekers better unite on one platform: What PM Imran Khan terms speeches by CJP, ‘convict’ in same event as ‘unfortunate’ are the natural resources for?

By: Zafar Alam, Sarwar, Surrey. et us go back in search for a better future. The demand for an independent Muslim homeland in the sub-continent was made in March1940 through the Lahore Resolution at the 27th annual session of the All-India Muslim League.Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s attitude in preliminary talks with the viceroy reflected the clarity and inflexible determination about his vision of the future. He insisted Muslims must have a sovereign nation-state with armed forces of its own. A year later, on March 2, the Quaid addressed the Punjab Muslim Students Federation with intent to prepare the youth for the future goals which still lie ahead. His followers, especially the Muslim Leaguers of all brands, need to recall the points he often emphasised. There are at least three pillars which go to make a nation, according to the founder of Pakistan. “One is education, without which we are in the same position as we were in a pandal last night in darkness. Next, no people can ever do anything very much without making themselves economically powerful in commerce, trade and industry. And, lastly, when we’ve got that light of knowledge by means of education and when we’re strong economically and industrially, then we’ve got to prepare ourselves for defence against external aggression--and maintain internal security.”The Quaid, on March 2 of 1942, appealed to the MSF to work for the ideals they cherished because there’s a great deal more to be done and, therefore, young and old, men and women must work. The great leader’s appeal lives on today as does his advice to the Aligarh Muslim University Union of the same month. QUAID’ APPEAL STILL ALIVE The appeal of the founder of Pakistan is not time-barred. Only true lovers of Pakistan, mili-

L

tary and civil, will realise that time has again come for them to shelve politics and devote themselves more and more to the constructive work, like spreading education among the masses, their social uplift and economic betterment. He declared in March 1947 in Bombay that “if there’s anything good (in the world), that’s just Islam.” The architect of Pakistan and the millions he led had an unending urge for an independent homeland. And that desire emanated from the Qura’n and the belief that the spirit of democracy and socio-economic justice is enshrined in Islam. One has to differentiate the Islamic concept of democracy from the Western type of democracy being practised by the so-called politicians in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan since Independence. The truth is that land belongs to Almighty Allah, who has delegated the proprietary rights to those who cultivate the land themselves. There’s no room for absentee landlords, feudalism and capitalism in Islam, which teaches fraternity, equality and liberty and guarantees socio-economic justice, irrespective of caste, creed or colour. And that is called democracy practised by Prophet Muhammad (peace upon him) in the welfare state of Madina, and later followed in letter and spirit by the caliphs according to the Quran, which is a book of wisdom and guidance to mankind in all spheres of life---social, economic and political---and, above all, a source of principles of democracy and justice to the deprived, the needy and the poor in an undemocratic state and society. Let’s unite on one platform, wear Jinnah cap and work hard together to achieve what is needed for survival with honour and dignity without borrowing money from others. The question still to ponder is: What are the natural resources for? The writer is senior journalist and former editor of The Pakistan Times, The Frontier Post and Special Correspondent of Dawn. Pak vs Ban: Abid Ali top-scores again as tourists inflict 8-wicket defeat on Tigers in 1st Test

A

bid Ali fell nine runs short of a second consecutive century as Pakistan chased down a target of 202 on Tuesday to win the first Test in Chittagong by eight wickets and take the lead in the two-match series against Bangladesh.Abid, who scored 133 in Pakistan’s first innings, and Abdullah Shafique stitched together a 151-run opening partnership in the second innings to put Pakistan within touching distance of victory on day five of the Test. Pakistan looked like they would cruise to a 10-wicket win, but Mehidy Hasan trapped debutant Abdullah legbefore on 73 to ease the margin of defeat. Abid lost his wicket six overs later, when Taijul Islam rattled his pads to get him out

leg-before. “Abdullah Shafique was making his debut, so we tried to stay on the crease, waited for bad balls and succeeded in putting those away,” Abid said. “I had done well in domestic cricket and carried that positive mindset here too. Abdullah played really well, I gave him more credit.“I am a bit disappointed that I got out for 91 in the second innings but at the same time I am happy that we won the match.” Azhar Ali (24 not out) and Babar Azam (13 not out) then combined to guide Pakistan over the finish line. The second Test in Dhaka starts on Dec, 4th. Source: dawn.com/news

PM Imran Khan terms audio tapes a “drama”. • PM slams PML-N over corruption cases. • He says Pakistan moving towards • becoming great nation. rime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said speeches by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed and a person whom the Supreme Court convicted — former prime minister Nawaz Sharif — in the same event (Asma Jahangir Conference) in Lahore is “unfortunate”. The premier’s statement came during the inauguration ceremony of four new projects — Kamyab Jawan Markaz, Kamyab Jawan Green Youth Movement, Kamyab Jawan Innovation League and Kamyab Jawan Talent Hunt Youth Sports League — for the welfare of the youth at the Kamyab Jawan Convention in Islamabad “It is unfortunate that in a conference where the chief justice and judges of the Supreme Court are invited, who delivers a speech there? A person who has been convicted by the Supreme Court and has fled the country after lying,” he said. “No nation is destroyed solely because of corruption, but it is destroyed when people do not consider theft as something bad,” the prime minister said, adding that when a nation’s moral values die, that is when its downfall begins.“That is why I have established the Rehmatul-lil-Alameen Authority [...] so we can learn from the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” he said. PM terms audio tapes a ‘drama’ The prime minister, referring to the audiotape that allegedly features former chief justice Saqib Nisar, said the talk of the town was audio tapes, so “I think I should shed some light on it as judges are also being named”. The prime minister said it was important to understand how all of it had started, as he mentioned that when he had stepped into politics 25 years ago, he had termed corruption as the country’s biggest problem. The prime minister said when the prime ministers and ministers of a country are corrupt and they launder money out of the country, that is what makes a nation poor. “And such a nation can never progress.” Moving forward, PM Imran Khan said the Panama case emerged in 2016, which revealed the names of people who had stashed their money abroad — and PMLN Vice President Maryam Nawaz was also listed as having four flats in one of the most expensive areas in London. “The case ran in court and after that, a JIT was formed. Instead of telling people how Maryam had obtained the [assets beyond means], she first cried ‘mujhay kyun nikala’ and then resorted to maligning the judiciary and the armed forces. I was already a bad person in their eyes,” he said. The premier said he was dragged to the Supreme Court, and over there, he submitted all the documents that the court had asked of him. “I was not even an of-

P

ficeholder back then, I was a sportsman.” “But when they [the PML-N leadership] was asked to provide money trails to the court, they provided fraudulent documents. Then came the Qatari letter, which was a fraud, then came the Calibri font matter, which was another fraud.” “Till now, they have not been able to provide a single document which gives a trail as to how they had obtained those four flats in London,” he said. Struggles in life The premier, at the outset of his address, said he told his mother at the age of nine that he wanted to become a Test cricketer, but all of his relatives brought him down, saying that he could not become one — and not be a part of the national team. The prime minister said he not only became a cricketer but also led the team to their maiden World Cup victory in 1992.“I worked hard, become the best bowler of Pakistan and later on, the world [...] everyone told me that it was impossible,” the prime minister said. The premier said when he wanted to build a hospital, establish a university in a rural area, everyone told him that he could not do it. “When I came into politics, people made fun of me — including major analysts — for 14 years.” PM Imran Khan said people told him that in a two-party system, a third party could not form the government. “Ever since we came into power three years ago, I am hearing that we will fail.” “Everyone said it was impossible, but Allah made it possible,” he noted, adding that no person has ever become successful through shortcuts, as the secret to success was having a big vision and determination. The prime minister said that the youth has got the opportunity to excel and at the same time benefit their country through the loans and skill development programmes being offered to them via Kamyab Jawan Programme. The prime minister said the country was going through a tough time due to the coronavirus as businesses had halted and prices of commodities shot up. However, to alleviate the adverse effects of the pandemic, “the government, through Kamyab Pakistan, will provide interest-free loans to four million deserving households for building their own homes and teach them skills”, he said. The prime minister said that citizens of all the provinces and regions where the PTI is in power, including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, will get universal healthcare, starting from January in Punjab. PM Imran Khan said families could get their ailing relatives treated at hospitals under the health scheme — worth Rs700,000-1,000,000. The prime minister said there were some problems that his government faced earlier, but now, Pakistan was moving towards becoming a successful nation. He reminded the people that it was crucial to lift their moral standards. Source: geo.tv
