elta Air Lines is being fined $50,000 for ordering three Muslim passengers off planes even after the airline’s own security officials cleared them to travel.

Delta denied that it discriminated against the passengers in two separate incidents but agreed it could have handled the situations differently, according to a consent order released Friday by the U.S. Transportation Department.

The department alleged that Delta violated anti-bias laws by removing the passengers, and ordered the airline to provide culturalsensitivity training to pilots, flight attendants and customer-service agents involved in the incidents.

In one of the cases, in July 2016 in Paris, a passenger told a flight attendant that a couple made her nervous. The woman was

he death toll rose to 170 in the new virus outbreak in China on Thursday as foreign evacuees from the worst-hit region begin returning home under close observation and world health officials expressed great concern that the disease is starting to spread between people outside of China. Thursday’s figures cover the previous 24 hours and represent an increase of 38 deaths and 1,737 cases for a total of 7,711. Of the new deaths, 37 were in the epicentre of the outbreak in Hubei province and one in the southwestern province of Sichuan.

The news comes as the 195 Americans evacuated from Wuhan, the Hubei province city of 11 million where the outbreak originated, are undergoing three days of testing and monitoring at a Southern California military base to make sure they do not show signs of the virus.

he battle over ride hailing is heating up in Metro Vancouver as a group of local cab companies is taking Uber, Lyft and Passenger Transportation Board to B.C. Supreme Court to try and stop service in the region.

Nine Metro Vancouver cab companies have teamed up and filed two legal challenges.

They’re seeking an injunction to halt Uber and Lyft’s Services, while a petition to rescind their licences goes before the court.

Court documents name Yellow Cab, Black Top Cabs, Maclure’s Cabs, Vancouver Taxi, North Shore Taxi, Richmond Cabs, Bonny’s Taxi, Burnaby Select Metrotown Taxi and Queen City Taxi as the petitioners.

They claim the PTB is allowing ride hailing companies to operate on more favourable terms than taxis.

Both friends and enemies

FTEN described as a shotgun marriage, the US-Pakistan partnership that came into being on Sept 12, 2001 remains paradoxical. Ironies abound in this alliance: the nation that serves as the linchpin in the US struggle to bring an end to its longest war has also been accused of harbouring the same ins­urgents that American forces are fighting against.

When Pakistan became America’s key strategic partner in the socalled war on terror, it also went to war against itself. The implications of this internal struggle for Pakistan, for the US, and the region, are huge. From the Pakistani vantage, the US embrace, difficult either to accept or escape, pitted the nation against itself on many fronts: the military against the militants, the present against the past, a political partnership with the US versus a culture of jihadi radicalism.

While extremely critical in order to fight global terrorism, the US and Pakistani security agencies followed their divergent agendas in Afghanistan. This underlying tension cast a huge shadow over the US war against the Taliban in Afghanistan. It is a war that had gone wrong from the outset.

Even if the world’s greatest military power believes it has not lost the war, it has not won it either. All three American presidents since 2001 — George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump — and their military commanders were not able to make good on their promises to win in Afghanistan.

A recent investigative report, ‘The Afghanistan Papers’ in The Washington Post, reveals how facts were distorted to hide the bleak reality of the battleground. It provides insightful detail into the lies and failures that are part of the 18-year US-led war in Afghanistan.

Many books dealing with Pak-US relations have been published over the years. What is missing, how­ ever, has been an objective study about the rocky relationship and the double game the security agencies of the two countries played with each other and its implications for Afghanistan and the ‘war on terror’.

In his latest book The Battle for Pakistan: The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighbourhood, Shuja Nawaz narrates the history of the relationship between the Pakistani and the US militaries. It provides interesting insight into an association largely built on expediency and marked by mutual mistrust.

The two supposed allies could not figure out whether they are friends or enemies despite a nearly two decade-long partnership. It is a story of post-9/11 relations between countries who can best be described as ‘frenemies’. The author writes: “In many ways, the 70-year-old US-Pakistan relationship, with its many ups and downs, alternately filled with both tantrums and fulsome praise for each other, has become a tragicomedy on a regional political stage, with numerous bad actors and confused heroes and heroines.” He likens the relationship to “an estranged couple that shares the same bed but dreams different dreams”.

It also sheds light on the deep involvement of the US and UK in Pakistan’s internal political battles. The horizontal and vertical fragmentation of the society along political, religious and ethnic lines, which has intensified since 9/11, poses the most serious problem for Pakistan.

The book dwells extensively on the expanding role of the Pakistan army in the country’s political arena and its non-professional interests that have increased so much that it has put down stakes in most areas of policymaking and management. Notwithstanding the efforts to transform the ideological complexion of the military, there has not been much change in the

institutional thinking on critical issues related to regional geopolitics. A break with its past support of militants has never truly been completed.

According to the author, the US preferred to deal with the Pakistani military as its main interlocutor, despite the restoration of democracy in the country. The weakening of the democratic process has also enabled the military to spread into civilian institutions of the state and society to the extent that its pre­ sence is today firmly established in all walks of life.

The pervasiveness of the military is evidenced in a major transformation in the outlook of its top leadership. The book notes that America failed Pakistan by “relying too much on its military partners in Pakistan and mollycoddling the corrupt civilian leadership”.

What makes The Battle For Pakistan substantive and authoritative is that it is based on interviews with senior Pakistani and US military officials directly involved in policymaking during that period.

The author has unique access to the centres of power in the US and Pakistan, both of which he considers home. That makes the book extremely objective, covering all sides and dimensions of a roller-coaster relationship.

This latest study of the stormy relationship between the Pakistani military and the US over the past two decades and the critical analysis of the military’s expanding political role seems to have upset certain quarters. Unfortunately, instead of learning from their mistakes and accepting reality, there is a move to restrict its message.

Cabinet decides to recover billions of rupees ‘illegally spent’ by ex-PMs, CMs

Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed on Tuesday said the federal cabinet has decided to recover billions of rupees allegedly spent illegally by a former president, prime ministers and chief ministers from the national exchequer. “The law will take its course if the misused public money is not surrendered by the accused,” he said while addressing a press briefing after the cabinet meeting alongside Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan.

The minister alleged that former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had set up five camp houses in Multan and Lahore despite having his own residences in the cities and all the expenses incurred there were footed from the national exchequer. Similarly, former president Asif Ali Zardari had three camp offices whereas former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and ex-Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif maintained five camp offices excluding Prime Minister House and Chief Minister House, the minister said. Saeed claimed that Shehbaz had even declared Nawaz’s Jati Umra residence in Raiwind as his camp office after the latter’s disqualification by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.

He said a squad of some 790 to 1,722 police personnel was deputed at any given time for Zardari’s security, which had cost around Rs163.71 billion to the national kitty.

Nawaz spent about Rs270 million on the fencing of his private Jati Umra residence and a contingent of 2,753 policemen was deputed for its security, the minister said. Moreover, separate police squads were deployed for the security of the Sharif brothers’ children and their spouses.

The minister claimed that Nawaz’s trip to London for his medical check-up had cost Rs340 million as the special aircraft had to make two trips to bring him back to Pakistan.

In the first trip, the airplane waited for two days at a London airport and then returned to the country without the former prime minister, Saeed added.

He alleged that Shehbaz had used his elder brother’s plane a total of 556 times and purchased luxury items worth Rs8.73 billion during his foreign tours.

According to Saeed, the national exchequer suffered a loss of Rs3.16 billion because of Zardari’s “lavish shopping” abroad. He said Nawaz as the prime minister made as many as 25 private visits to London costing Rs1.84 billion while Zardari as the president went on 69 private tours to different destinations abroad costing the country Rs1.42 billion.

Shehbaz soon after assuming charge as the Punjab chief minister bought a new helicopter of his own choice for Rs1.3 billion “as the old one was probably uncomfortable for him”, the minister claimed.

He said Prime Minister Imran Khan was living in his private residence at Bani Gala despite being the premier and even spent money from his own pocket for the construction of the road leading to his home. He also preferred using commercial flights for his foreign visits instead of a chartered plane, Saeed added.

He noted that Prime Minister Imran’s visit to New York and Washington DC had cost only $68,000 in contrast to the visits of the former prime ministers, who he alleged used to spend hefty amounts on such visits.

According to the minister, the cabinet today made the decision of recovering “illegally spent taxpayers’ money” from the former rulers, in addition to amending the rules for allocating special funds for camp offices.Source: dawn.com/news

PM Khan orders speedy completion of CPEC projects ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said the ongoing development projects under the ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) should be completed on a fast-track basis and directed to give final shape to the consultation process of the future plans on priority.

Lauding the time-tested friendship with the northern neighbour, he said China had always supported Pakistan during the difficult times and CPEC was a manifestation of the multi-dimensional partnership between the two countries.

He also observed that Chinese experiences in the social sector, especially for the eradication of poverty and promotion of agriculture, must be fully explored, Prime Minister Office Media Wing in a press release said.

The prime minister was chairing a high-level review meeting to ascertain progress on different CPEC projects. Revenue Minister Hammad Azhar, Planning Minister Asad Umar, Finance Adviser Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, Maritime Minister Syed Ali Haider Zaidi, CPEC Authority Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa, Naya Pakistan Housing Programme Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Anwar Ali Haider and other senior officials also attended.

The premier directed the CPEC Authority to accelerate implementation pace on different projects under the second phase on priority.

Giving direction for early finalisation and completion of the projects, Khan asked the relevant ministries to set completion period and emphasised upon making the inter-ministerial coordination more effective to achieve desired results within the appointed time frame.

He also directed to brief him in the upcoming review meeting on the projects falling under the CPEC second phase, including their completion period, implementation, removal of hurdles and the future mechanism.

The prime minister was briefed in detail over the progress on the short, medium and long-term CPEC projects.

The meeting was apprised about the first phase of CPEC projects in energy, road and rail networks and Gwadar Port, and the second phase schemes, including industrialisation cooperation, promotion of agriculture, social and economic

progress, tourism and others.

It was informed that majority of the projects in the energy and road networks had been completed whereas work on the Gwadar Port and airport was under progress phase-wise.

The Orange Line project was completed while consultation process over feasibility of Quetta railway was underway.

Khan had already laid the foundation stone of the Allama Iqbal Special Economic Zone while Rashakai’s was expected in the next month. The bidding process for Dhabeji Economic Zone would be completed soon, it was further informed.

The meeting also took stock of different recommendations regarding proposed projects under CPEC phase two, in the education and health sectors, housing scheme for the low income groups, poverty reduction, Ehsaas poverty programme and eradication of malnutrition and stunting issues.

Pakistan rejects Modi’s ‘belligerent rhetoric’, urges world to take note of Indian aggression

The Foreign Office on Wednesday rejected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “belligerent rhetoric” against Pakistan, stating that his recent remarks were a “reflection of India’s incurable obsession with Pakistan”.

In a statement released today, the FO in response to Modi’s remarks from yesterday

urged the international community to “take cognisance of Indian leadership’s continuing belligerent rhetoric and aggressive measures, which pose a threat to regional peace and security”.

The FO was referring to claims made by Modi during a speech to military personnel on Tuesday in Delhi, where he said Indian forces were now capable of making Pakistan “bite the dust” in less than 10 days.

“Our armed forces will not take more than seven to 10 days to make Pakistan bite the dust,” Modi had declared. Wearing a maroon National Cadet Corps baseball cap at the event in New Delhi, Modi said India’s new prowess was a consequence of what he termed as “youthful thinking”. Evidence for

this prowess, he said, could be gathered from India’s strikes in Azad Jammu and Kashmir last year and in 2016.

In 2016, two Pakistan Army soldiers were martyred as Indian troops fired across the Line of Control in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. At the time, Indian army had claimed to have carried out surgical strikes, targeting “terror launchpads” along the Line of Control. The claims were rejected by the Pakistan Army as an “illusion being deliberately generated by Indian to create false effects”.

The Indian prime minister’s comments follow last year’s skirmish between the two nuclear-armed states when an Indian fighter jet was shot down — and the pilot captured —

by Islamabad after a rare aerial engagement.

In its statement issued today, the Foreign Office said: “[Modi’s comments reflect] BJP government and leadership’s desperate attempts to divert attention from growing domestic and international criticism of their discriminatory, anti-Kashmir and anti-minority policies “The Indian prime minister’s threats and provocative statements further illustrate the extremist mindset that pervades the BJP leadership and has evidently permeated the state institutions in India.”

Modi is under pressure after weeks of ongoing protests against a new citizenship law that has been widely criticised for being anti-Muslim, a slowing economy and the prospect of losing the latest in a string of state elections in New Delhi next month.

wearing a head scarf, and — the other passenger claimed — the man inserted something in his phone. The flight attendant said she walked by and saw the man writing “Allah” several times while texting on his phone.

At the captain’s request, a Delta supervisor and security officer interviewed the couple outside the plane. Delta’s corporate security office reported that the couple were U.S. citizens returning home to Cincinnati and “raised no red flags,” and they were cleared to fly, according to the consent order.

But the captain refused to let them re-board the plane; they flew home the next day.

The Transportation Department said it appears that the couple would have been allowed to fly but for their “perceived religion.” The couple was not named in the consent order, but their representatives identified them as Faisal and Nazia Ali of the Cincinnati, Ohio, area.

The other case in the consent order occurred five days later in Amsterdam. Flight attendants and passengers complained about a Muslim passenger, but the co-pilot saw nothing unusual about the man, and Delta’s

security office said his record raised no concern. The captain prepared to begin the New York-bound flight, then returned to the gate and had the man and his bags removed and the area around his seat searched. The man was not subjected to additional screening before boarding a later flight, which the Transportation Department said showed that his removal from the first flight was discriminatory. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, which represented the Alis, questioned the size of the penalty.

Delta earned nearly $4.8 billion last year, and for a company that profitable, “$50,000 is basically a slap on the wrist,” said Karen Dabdoub, executive director of CAIR’s Cincinnati chapter.

“But it’s a good sign that DOT is taking this seriously,” she added. “I’m glad to see that Delta received some sort of a sanction.”

The government did not explain how the size of the fine was determined but said that it “establishes a strong deterrent against future similar unlawful practices by Delta and other carriers.”Delta disagreed with the government’s contention of discrimination, but “Delta does not dispute that each of these two incidents could have been handled differently,” the government said in the consent order. Delta said that in both cases, it acted based on the passengers’ behavior, not their identity, and its employees acted reasonably.

In the case of the Alis, one of the complaining customers identified herself as a retired safety inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration, the airline said.

The Atlanta-based airline said that after the 2016 incidents it improved its procedures for investigating suspicious behavior to make it “more collaborative and objective.”

Airlines around the world have started to cancel more flights to China as coronavirus fears have dragged down demand for air travel in the area. Air Canada normally runs 33 flights a week to China out of Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal but on Wednesday the airline announced it would halt all flights to Beijing and Shanghai until the end of February at least. “Air Canada’s last flights departing Canada will operate today and the return flights will operate from Beijing and Shanghai tomorrow, January 30, 2020,” the airline said. “Affected customers will be notified and offered options, including travel on other carriers where available, or a full refund. Air Canada regrets this situation and apologizes for the serious disruption to our customers’ travel plans,” the airline said in a statement.

It isn’t the only airline scaling back. British Airways on Wednesday suspended all direct flights to and from mainland China through to the end of February, although it will maintain limited service to Hong Kong.

“We apologize to customers for the inconvenience, but the safety of our customers and crew is always our priority,” the airline said in a statement on Wednesday. “Customers due to travel to or from China in the coming days can find more information on BA.com.”

Even though Canada has secured a plane, there are still many challenges in figuring out how to get Canadians out of Wuhan during the coronavirus outbreak. American Airlines said Wednesday it will suspend flights between Los Angeles and both Shanghai and Beijing from Feb. 9 through Mar. 27. Indonesia’s Lion Air said it has cancelled more than 50 flights to China well into February. Kazakhstan, which shares a long border with far western China, announced Wednesday that it plans to suspend all flights, as well as train and bus traffic, and to halt issuing visas to Chinese nationals. HAVANA -- A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in the Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and Cuba on Tuesday, shaking a vast area from Mexico to Florida and beyond, but there were no reports of casualties or heavy damage. The quake was centred 139 kilometres (86 miles) northwest of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and 140 kilometres (87 miles) west-southwest of Niquero, Cuba, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It hit at 2:10 p.m. (1910 GMT) and the epicenter was a relatively shallow 10 kilometres (6 miles) beneath the surface. Dr. Enrique Arango Arias, head of Cuba’s National Seismological Service, told state media that there had been no serious damage or injuries reported on the island. The Cayman Islands were rocked by several of the strong aftershocks that followed in the area, including one measured at magnitude 6.1. The quake was felt strongly in Santiago, the largest city in eastern Cuba, said Belkis Guerrero, who works in a Roman Catholic cultural centre in the centre of Santiago “We were all sitting and we felt the chairs move,” she said. “We heard the noise of everything moving around.”

She said there was no apparent damage in the heart of the colonial city.

“It felt very strong but it doesn’t look like anything happened,” she told The Associated Press.

In a report published on Wednesday, Chinese researchers suggested that person-to-person spread among close contacts occurred as early as mid December.

Considerable efforts will be needed to control the spread if this ratio holds up elsewhere, researchers wrote in the report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

More than half of the cases in which symptoms began before Jan 1 were tied to a seafood market, but only 8pc of cases after that have been, researchers found.

Why should we Read/Understand the Qur’an?

But won’t this be your first question when somebody takes you away in sleep and you wake up tomorrow in a in a fast-moving train heading somewhere? Just because you are living on this planet for the last 20, 40 years, the questions don’t disappear.

Every person in this life undergoes cycles of happiness and sorrow, and of ease and tough situations. In easy situations, we tend to forget everything else. But when life goes through tough situations, no one can help you, not even money, position, status, relatives, power, etc. In those times, only Allah through His book can guide you to the best solutions. It alone can give you peace of mind and heart.

peace and happiness. We should then remember that we are made of up of two main parts: Body and soul. We are well aware of bodily needs and give our full time to fulfill them. What about the soul? Food for the soul is the remembrance of God and the reading of His book. If we don’t satisfy our soul, we can never be happy and peaceful.

Let us talk about success. The most successful person in the history of humanity is Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬even according to those who don’t believe in him (Encyclopedia Brittanica, The 100, Time Magazine, etc.). What was his manual? The Qur’an! To be successful, there is no better guide than the Qur’an.

If you want to have a meaningful, peaceful, happy, and successful life, then the book of Allah is the only answer.

Why should we teach it to our children?

You want your family life to be peaceful and more importantly your children to be happy, mature, living a good life, be attached to you, be nice to you. That they don’t fall into Haraam traps and the wrong things that are around you. If we don’t teach them the ba-

sics through the Qur’an, then how can they live the right way.

Everyone thinks that his child is different.

He or she won’t go wrong. Until the time he is shocked. And they start running asking elders, asking shaikhs, mawlawi sb or mawlana to help them, teach them the respect, and so on. You can’t do that in a moment.

Start it right now. You have to make sure that your child gets continuous dosage to resist and overcome the bad effects of the environment that he is living every day.

How does the Qur’an guide?

Allah asks us to ponder the simple yet powerful argument to believe in the message of the Qur’an.

Allah asks us to ponder the signs in the universe, in us and around us.

He presents us with two tracks and track records of the good and the bad people in the history; how they behaved and what was their end in this world. They He describes their future too, of the good people in heaven and of the bad people in the hell.

90% of its verses appeal to our thinking.

They build up and strengthen our faith and that is what we are missing these days. That strengthening of the faith is one of the most important part of Hidayah.

The Quran is a guide to humanity which also includes you, dear reader. Since none of us want to be misguided, it is paramount not only to read or recite the Quran, but to understand and implement it in our lives as well.

at first, but within a week or two you should be able to memorize them fully and just recite them before dozing off.

• Remember the rewards attached to Fajr Salaat: from being safe from being a hypocrite, to having light on the day of judgement, to being under Allah’s protection the whole day, to having laziness removed from us that day and being productive. Remember these rewards and you’ll sure wake up.

Other tools I use that help me a lot: Ask a friend/family member to wake you up: This is the number one rule for me to wake up. Get a family, friend, spouse to wake up, and help each other, if you get up before them, don’t be selfish and make sure they are awake too.

• 1.5 hours sleep rule: Aaaah.. here’s a secret trick, there’s a theory in the Sleep science that says that every human being completes an entire sleep cycle in 1.5 hours, therefore, if you can wake up at the end of a multiple of 1.5 hours (e.g. 1.5 hours, or 3 hours, or 4.5 hours..etc) you’ll wake up fresh and rejuvenated. Otherwise, you’ll wake up lazy.

So if fajr is at 5am, and you sleep at 12am, make sure you set your alarm at 4.30am, because that gives you 4.5 hours to sleep.

(Of course, if you take 1/2 an hour to fall to sleep, you might need to add that into your calculation).

• Nap in the afternoon: Another lifehack, taken from the Sunnah and recommended by many, make sure you nap in the afternoon, for just 20 minutes! yup, just 20 minutes.

Trust me, for the past 3 years, I’ve mastered the 20 min nap, and everytime it never fails to rejuvenate me. If you need to train yourself to nap for that long, I highly recommend www.pzizz.com, a wonderful software that trains you for these short naps, it’s what I used to train myself.

• Promise yourself a grand breakfast if you wake up for Fajr: I’m a breakfast guy, so if I wake up early, I sure like to have a big breakfast. Sometimes I look forward to my breakfast from the afternoon before, and just like a small reward, treat yourself to a massive breakfast in the morning. It’ll definitely set your day straight as well inshaAllah.

How to Wake up for Fajr?

ow do you wake up for fajr? And I don’t mean wake up for a day or two, but how do you keep waking up for fajr, constantly, everyday, without fail.

There’s loads & loads of websites online giving you tips and advice on how to wake up early. But our focus is not on worldly tips (which should be taken by all means, part of tying the camel), our focus is on the spiritual means.

My dear brothers/sisters, every day when you read Surat Al-Fatiha, at least 17 times a day, you recite the verse “You Alone we Worship, and You Alone we Seek Help from”: You want to worship Allah? “Yes!” You need His help then. You want to wake up for Fajr?

“Yes please!” Guess what, you need Allah.

You cannot, I repeat, cannot, wake up for fajr without Allah’s help. Now ask yourself the question, what can I do to show Allah that I truly and utterly want to wake up for fajr?!

Have you ever had days when you’re about to go to sleep, and you have this deep feeling that you’ll definitely wake up for fajr? And have you ever had days when you know for certain that you’ll oversleep? Imagine the two scenarios, which I’m sure some of us have gone through: Scenario 1: You feel high with Eman, you’ve prayed your witr, read some Quran, and even though you’ve got 2 hours to sleep till fajr, you’re certain you’ll wake up because you’ve set your mind, heart and body to make sure you wake up. In fact, sometimes you keep on waking in the middle of the night thinking it’s fajr time out of fear that you’re going to miss it. If you haven’t experienced this, think of a time when you had to catch an early flight or a bus/ train, and think of how your mind, heart and body were switched on, and it doesn’t matter what time you slept, you’ll wake up.

Scenario 2: There are days when deep down you really don’t want to wake up, you hope that you “oversleep” so you feel less guilty about it, and Allah may have mercy upon you and still wake you up, and that’s when the battle with the snooze alarm starts and the classic shaytaan trick “just 5 more minutes…” begins.

How do we maintain scenario 1 everyday?

With these 2 scenarios, one details a feeling

deep down inside that you’re definitely waking up, and another where you know you won’t wake up because deep down inside you don’t want to and you’re not ready to take the fight against shaytaan of waking up in the morning.

Below I detail some practical and spiritual tools, that will help you in achieving scenario 1 all the time inshaAllah: Spiritual Tools • Know who Allah is: This is the key and number one tool to waking up for Fajr. If you know Who you’re worshipping, and you know that He requests that you get up in the morning and pray to Him, you’ll wake up. It’s our lack of understanding of who Allah is that makes us slump into scenario 2 all the time. Know your Lord, that’s key.

• Sincerity: Be sincere about waking up for fajr, don’t just say to yourself: “InshaAllah, it’ll be nice if I wake up for fajr” be sincere about it, and say: “I will wake up for fajr” I find it useful sometimes to talk to myself about it before going to sleep and say: “I will wake up for fajr, i don’t care how, but I’ll definitely will!”

• Wudu before sleep: Ibn Abbas reported that Allah’s Messenger said: “Purify these bodies and Allah will purify you, for there is no slave who goes to sleep in a state of purity but an Angel spends the night with him, and every time he turns over, [the Angel] says, ‘O Allah!

Forgive Your slave, for he went to bed in a state of purity.” Do you think that such a person would be left to oversleep and miss fajr?

• Witr Prayer + Dua: Make sure you don’t sleep before performing your witr prayer, and supplicate to Allah during your Witr prayer to help you wake up for Fajr, remember, “You Alone we Worship, and You Alone we Seek help from” • Read some Quran: Ending the day with verses of the Noble Quran will sure put your focus straight on waking up for salaat. Prophet Muhammad used to recommend that we recite Surat Al-Sajdah, and Surat Al-Mulk (Chapters 32 and 67) before going to sleep.

• Remember Allah before you go to Sleep: This is part of the first point I made, and you can find all the supplications you need to recite before going to sleep here. You might need to print them off and read them off paper

The legal challenges aren’t the only strategy the BC Taxi Association is adopting.

“The companies going forward from this day on will not subsidize our accessible vehicles,” said Carolyn Bauer a spokesperson for the association.

“We are stopping our policy plan and we are moving forward with if the drivers go, they go, if they don’t they don’t, we are not going to subsidize any more payments for them,” Bauer told CTV News.

The Taxi Association says it won’t subsidize drivers with accessible vehicles because they are too expensive to operate.

However, that strategy is putting customers who depend on taxis in the middle.

Jonquil Hallgate relies on cabs to get her to and from her Surrey home.

She’s living with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a severe form of arthritis that has left her wheelchair bound.

She says taxi availability and pricing is a major barrier.

“I would like to see ride-sharing here, even though they don’t have accessible vehicles

because I hope that means there will be more accessible taxis available for me,” Hallgate told CTV News.

She was on hand for Surrey’s city council meeting Monday night to see what the councillors had to say on the issue.

It was touched on briefly by Coun. Linda Annis during the meeting.

Annis is supportive of ride share and put forth a motion asking city staff for a corporate report on ride hailing, to clarify what the city actually has the power to do and how to best move forward.

She said the purpose of the motion was to prevent the city from being in a standstill.

“To get the city to deal with ride hailing sooner as opposed to later,” Annis said following the meeting.

“The residents of Surrey have been waiting for ride hailing for quite some time now and quite honestly I’m embarrassed that Vancouver is ready to go and Surrey is not,” said Annis.

The report is expected back at the next council meeting Feb. 10.

In the meantime, Uber says it is preparing legal action to stay in the city.

“It is highly unfortunate that the mayor is threatening drivers with fines that have no legal basis,” Uber in a statement.

“The Uber app will continue to be available to the residents and visitors of Surrey within our service area, and we will be preparing legal action to defend the right to access Uber’s apps.” Source: CTV News

Kobe Bryant, Daughter Gianna Among 9 Dead in Helicopter Crash. Here’s What to Know

Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest basketball players of all time and an internationally recognizable NBA superstar, died in a helicopter crash Sunday outside Los Angeles.

He was 41 years old.

Bryant was flying with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people when the helicopter went down “in a remote field” in Calabasas, Calif. around 10 a.m., according to the Associated Press.

All nine people aboard the helicopter were killed, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. They were named by family and local news reports as Gianna’s basketball teammate Alyssa Altobelli, her mother, Keri, and her father, John, a baseball coach. Also killed in the crash were Christina Mauser, a school basketball assistant coach; Payton Chester, another teammate of Gianna’s, and

Payton’s mother Sarah. The helicopter pilot, named in local reports as Ara Zobayan, was also killed. Bryant is survived by his wife, Vanessa Laine Bryant. They had four children together. On Wednesday night, Laine Bryant changed her Instagram profile picture to a photo of her husband sharing a tender moment with Gianna. She also posted a photo of the family and thanked the public for their support.

“My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time,” she said.

“There aren’t enough words to describe our pain right now. I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved,” she added.

VANCOUVER -- The first presumptive positive case of novel coronavirus has been detected in British Columbia, health officials confirmed Tuesday. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control said one patient appears to be infected with the newly discovered coronavirus and is currently in isolation at home.

The individual is a 40-year-old male who travels to China regularly and was in Wuhan city on his most recent trip, officials said. He lives in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

“This is a gentleman who is well aware of what is going on in China and when he went home he voluntarily self-isolated,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry at a news conference Tuesday.

The man contacted a health-care provider on Jan. 26 to let them known he had travelled to Wuhan and was experiencing symptoms.

That health-care provider gave a diagnostic test, which came back positive on Monday night. The man was monitoring his own symptoms carefully and his family is also being monitored by Vancouver Coastal Health.

Henry said the man arrived back in Vancouver last week and his symptoms began showing more than 24 hours after arriving home.

“This person is currently doing well and does not need hospitalization,” Henry said. “This person was not symptomatic on his flight.”

Henry said there is no evidence that the virus spreads when a person is asymptomatic.

“That’s reassuring to us and that’s certainly in line with other coronavirus infections that we’ve seen in the past like SARS and MERS,” Henry said.

Right now the man’s case is considered “presumptive positive” because confirmation is done by a second test at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.

“The sample is on its way to Winnipeg,” Henry said. “But given the history of travel, the contact that this person had in Wuhan city and the symptoms they were showing, we are confident that this truly is a case of this novel coronavirus.”

Henry said NML’s test result is expected in about 48 hours, but that she is confident in the result found by the B.C. lab’s test.

Case no surprise, officials say Henry added that with the high amount of travel between Metro Vancouver and China, the presumptive positive case didn’t come as a surprise.

“This first case is not unexpected to us,” she said. “This does not change what we are doing in British Columbia … I would have been surprised if we did not have one or two cases.”

Henry cautioned against listening to rumours of B.C. cases, saying that the provincial ministry will continue to update the public if more cases are confirmed.

“There has been a small number of people around the province that have been tested for this novel coronavirus and we have a very low threshold for that testing,” Henry said. “There have been a number of tests that have been done; this is the first one that has been positive.”

Prevention and screening measures In a news release from the ministry of health, the province said the general public doesn’t necessarily need to take extra measures to protect themselves from the virus.

“It is not necessary for the general public to take special precautions beyond the usual measures recommended to prevent other common respiratory viruses during the winter period,” the news release said.

“Regular handwashing, coughing or sneezing into your elbow sleeve, disposing of tissues appropriately and avoiding contact with sick people are important ways to prevent the spread of respiratory illness generally.”

Previously, the BC Centre for Disease Control has developed a diagnostic test for the novel coronavirus and health-care workers have been asked to record the travel history for anyone reporting respiratory symptoms.

Travellers passing through Vancouver International Airport are also being screened when they arrive at the airport, particularly if they’ve visited Wuhan, China, where the virus is believed to have originated.

Other cases in Canada In Ontario, two cases have been recorded.

One case has been confirmed while the second is considered presumptive positive.

Symptoms of the virus include a runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, fever and a general feeling of being unwell.

“Anyone who is concerned they may have been exposed to, or are experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus should contact their primary-care provider, local public health office or call 811,” the province said.

The outbreak of the virus began on Dec. 31 with what was initially believed to be a cluster of cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, the capital city of China’s Hubei province.

Officials have since confirmed the patients were actually infected with a virus never previously identified in humans, which has been dubbed the 2019 novel coronavirus, or 2019nCoV. Coronaviruses are a “large family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases,” according to Health Canada.

To date, the virus has infected more than 4,500 people and is blamed for over 100 deaths.

On Jan 27th, Dr. Shireen M Mazari, Pakistani Minister of Human Rights came for a private visit of beautiful BC. Pakistani Consul General Dr. Mohammad Tarik invited her at his residence in Vancouver to meet Pakistani Canadian community members along with the representatives of PCA, PCCA, PCWS, FOP, PTI and Canadian Muslim Media Club members.

Dr. Tarik welcomed Dr. Mazari in BC and thanked her for accepting his invitation to meet the community during her short visit .

He mentioned in Dr Mazari’s introduction that she did her B.Sc.(Hon) from the London School of Economics, and a Masters, M. Phil, and PhD, from Colombia University, New York, USA. She was Director-General, Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad, from August 2000 to May 2008. Dr. Mazari has been a regular columnist for the main English dailies of Pakistan and was Editor of The Nation a leading English Daily, from 2009 to 2010. Dr. Mazari said that regarding the relations between Canada and Pakistan, some points in business have already been discussed and other matters will be resolved soon with both governments. Regarding the dam funds, Dr. Mazari said the Pakistani Government does not have sufficient funds yet to start, and it is not my ministry but I will get back to you with an update through the Consul General when I am there.

Another Question was raised by Mr. Haroon about the false blasphemy cases being registered against minorities like Asiya Bibi, Ramsha. 60-70% of thee cases are false. Other issues raised inlcuded how to approach the judiciary to get justice quicker, human rights

By: Mahwish Yousaf January 26, 2020, Vancouver, BC – The British Columbia based Global Peace Society and other BC human rights activist organizations gathered in front of the India’s Consulate General office in Vancouver on Sunday, January 26, 2029 at 9:00 AM to protest the Indian government’s racist and discriminatory “Citizenship Amendment Bill” (CAB), and to condemn the police brutality towards the students on the occasion of 71th Republic day of India.

The proposed legislation amends India’s citizenship laws to make it easier for those fleeing persecution in neighbouring countries to get Indian citizenship. However, Muslim minorities are not covered under the law which has sparked nationwide protests in India.

“This law is officially sanctioned discrimination against Muslim minorities who might be seeking refuge in India from neighbouring countries. But it seems that only non-Muslims are protected under this law.

Criminals in India seem to have more rights than Muslims do under Narendra Modi’s Hindu supremacist government,” according to Mahwish Yousaf, representative of the Global Peace Society.

Thousands of students across India have taken to the streets in recent days in an uprising against this controversial law and state sponsored violence against the students. The protestors feel that these laws are discriminatory and part of a Hindu-nationalist agenda to marginalize India's 200-million Muslim minority.

“We are calling on the government of India to withdraw the CAB and abide by international refugee covenants which do not place the welfare of one persecuted minority over another. In addition, we are urging the Indian government to halt the National Register for Citizens (NRC) initia-

tive, which also negatively impacts the Muslim minority in India, and has the potential to strip citizenship from tens of millions of marginalized Muslims whose families have lived in India for generations, but who may not be able to produce the required identification documents to prove citizenship,” Yousaf added.

The Global Peace Society and other groups demonstrated in front of India’s consulate are also calling on the Canadian government to speak out and take action to defend international human rights. Yousaf pointed out that “In the Throne Speech Justin Trudeau said that his government would ‘increase Canadian support abroad for democracy, human rights, international law’ and ‘promote respect for diversity and inclusion.’ Now is the moment when can put actions behind those words by defending the human rights of India’s Muslim minority.

‘Cause of sexual orientation’ is ‘scientifically unclear,’ Tory leadership hopeful says

OTTAWA -- Science right now doesn’t show there’s a biological component to being gay, rookie Tory MP and prospective Conservative leadership candidate Derek Sloan said in an interview on Tuesday.

“Whatever the cause of sexual orientation, which I still maintain is scientifically unclear. That is the position of science right now,” Sloan said.

“Science right now is saying that, yes, there’s biological components, but there’s many other factors that play into it and they don’t

even know how they all work together.” His comments during an interview on CTV Power Play were a response to fellow leadership hopeful Richard Décarie’s recent remarks that being gay is a “choice.”

His platform would not touch the issue of same-sex marriage, Sloan said, but he told Power Play host Evan Solomon that he would not have voted for Bill C-16, which enshrined the rights of transgender people into law in 2016.

He also said that while he disagrees with Décarie’s comments, they were “blown into a bigger situation than it needed to be” because “people missed the nuance.”

When Solomon pressed Sloan on his comments about sexuality, he said that “if you actually look into the research surrounding sexuality, there’s a lot going on there.”

“The idea that there is a specific biological etiology or cause is not true,” he later added, saying that he was “borrowing” words from the American Psychological Association.

The APA’s website says that while there is “no

consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian orientation… most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation.”

Solomon then asked Sloan if this means he supports conversion therapy, which parliamentarians are currently working to outlaw through legislation.

Sloan replied that the concept of conversion therapy is “broadly defined.” He said that the practice of “body affirming counselling,” which Sloan said could fall under that banner, should not be banned.

“I don’t think anybody should be forced to do anything they don’t want to do. But if somebody wants to receive gender-affirming, or body-affirming counselling when they’re going through a position of ‘What’s going on with me?’ they should be able to have that,” Sloan said.

“We know a lot of kids that go through these feelings grow out of them by the time they’re adults.” The United Nations Human Rights

Ralston will also oversee BC Hydro and make sure B.C.’s wealth of clean, renewable electricity powers the province into the future. Ralston will continue to serve as lead minister for consular affairs.

Wilkinson won’t say how much your car insurance will go up under his scheme

A

BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson won’t tell you that his plan to privatize car insurance could result in double digit rate increases.

The Alberta Conservative government recently removed a rate cap implemented by Alberta’s NDP government, allowing rates to skyrocket up to 30 per cent.

Today the Insurance Bureau of Canada released a report comparing the cost of car insurance for B.C. and Alberta that doesn’t factor in double digit increases that were approved earlier this month.

The authors admit in a footnote on Page 12 of the report that “the impact

of the removal of the cap may not be reflected in the premiums used for the comparisons.”

With double digit rate hikes for Alberta drivers and likely more on the way in future years, Alberta is on a path towards Ontario’s private system, which has “the highest insurance rates in the country,” according to Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips.

Ontario drivers were recently shocked with rate increases by private insurers – in the case of one Brampton family, a 62.5% hike.

In fact, Wilkinson’s own BC Liberal government found in a 2002 review that if ICBC was opened up to compe-

Surrey, BC -- Hundreds of families joined Surrey Libraries at the inaugural Surrey Libraries EXPO on Saturday January 25th at the Guildford Town Centre to celebrate Family Literacy Day. The EXPO showcased some of the wonderful and varied programs and services offered at Surrey Libraries.

Participants got an opportunity to try their hand at stop motion animation, Dot and Dash Robotics, and have their photo turned into a vintage photo by using green screen technology. There was a mini escape room, and even a pop-up library where people could register for free library cards and borrow books, DVDs, and books on CD. “This year’s theme for Family Literacy week

is ‘Take 20!’ and encourages families to take 20 minutes and make learning together part of every day,” said Mayor Doug McCallum who was there to help kick off the EXPO. “We know literacy is an essential skill that directly impacts people’s quality of life and their ability to earn a good living. That’s why it’s so important to promote literacy and this is where Surrey Libraries plays an essential role in our community.”

Family Literacy Day is a national initiative involving annual literacy-related events and activities held at the end of January to raise awareness of the importance of literacy.

What continues to be my chief concern is the unfair advantage that has been created without any regard as to how it will impact those who are employed in the taxi industry. Saudi minister says Israeli passport holders cannot visit: CNN

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said Israelis were not welcome to visit the kingdom after Israel decreed that its citizens could visit Saudi Arabia under certain circumstances, CNN reported.

“Our policy is fixed. We do not have relations with the state of Israel and Israeli passport holders cannot visit the kingdom at the current time,” the US broadcaster quoted Prince Faisal bin Farhan as saying on Monday.

A statement from Israel’s interior minister on Sunday said Israelis — if invited and permitted by Saudi authorities — would be allowed to travel there for religious reasons on pilgrimage or for up to nine days for business reasons such as investment or meetings.

Israelis, mostly Muslims going on pilgrimage, have for years been visiting the kingdom, which hosts the two holiest sites in Islam, but usually with special

permission or using foreign passports.

“When a peace agreement is reached between the Palestinians and the Israelis, I believe the issue of Israel’s involvement in the region will be on the table,” Prince Faisal said. U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to disclose details of his Middle East peace plan to Israeli leaders on Monday, as Palestinian officials decried it as a bid “to finish off ” the Palestinian cause.

US has ramped up air bombings since Trump was elected in 2016, killing 717 civilians in the first half of last year.

United States forces in Afghanistan have dropped a record number of bombs this year more than at any other time in at least 10 years, according to the US Air Force.

The US has dropped 7,423 bombs on targets in Afghanistan in 2019, marking a rise from the 7,362 munitions released in 2018, the US Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT) said in a report released on Monday.

The figure represents a dramatic increase in bombings in Afghanistan in contrast to 2009 when 4,147 bombs were dropped under former President Barack Obama.

The US has now ramped up air bombings since President Donald Trump was elected in 2016 as Washington removed a requirement that said the targets should be “proximate” to US or Afghan forces in order to prevent civilian casualties.

The United Nations and rights groups have repeatedly expressed concerns over the increase in air raids across the country by US and Afghan forces that have resulted in a dramatic rise in civilian casualties.

On Sunday, at least seven civilians, including three children were killed in government air raids in Afghanistan’s northern Balkh province that triggered protests from residents.

Earlier this month, more than 60 civilians were killed or wounded in a US drone attack targeting a top Taliban splinter-group commander in the western Afghanistan province of Herat. Resolute Support, NATO’s mission in Afghanistan, said in a statement that it launched “a defensive air strike in support of Afghan forces”, with a spokesman confirming US participation in the operation.

In October, UN said it had credible reports of US air attacks on alleged Taliban drug laboratories resulting in the death of at least 30 civilians, including children. The US-led

mission in Afghanistan quickly disputed the claim. The raids targeted 60 sites in Farah Province and neighboring Nimruz Province.

In the first half of 2019, 717 civilians were killed by government forces, including US, representing a dramatic increase of 31 percent from a year earlier, the UN reported last year. The spike in hostilities comes as the US and the Taliban continue to push for a pos-

sible agreement that would see US troops withdrawing from Afghanistan in return for security guarantees.

Multiple sources close to the talks said the Taliban had agreed to scale down attacks against US forces and Afghan government forces. The US demands a ceasefire from the group before any agreement could be finalised.

Amid US-Iran tensions, many Iranian Americans fear they will face increased discrimination. Some already have. New York City, United States - In the weeks following the US killing of top Iranian commander Qassem Soliemani, fears of increased “Iranophobia” have gripped some in the Iranian-American community amid the escalation of tensions between Iran and the United States.

Iran fired more than a dozen missiles at Iraqi bases housing US troops earlier this month after the killing of Soliemani on January 3.

Responding to the attacks, the US announced it was imposing additional sanctions on Iran, including sanctions on eight Iranian officials it said were involved in “destabilising” activities in the Middle East.

Iranian Americans have watched the latest developments with concern for family and friends in Iran, but also with renewed fears of a backlash against their communities in the US. “The spread of Iranophobia in western media is leading to our dehumanisation,” Monna Sabouri, an Iranian American, told Al Jazeera. “Iranian Americans are being stripped of their constitutional rights. And of our humanity.” Immediately after the US assassination of Soleimani, cities in the US were on alert for possible retaliation.Despite the US Department of Homeland Security announcing there was “no specific, credible threat against the homeland”, officials in cities such as New York put out statements saying they were prepared to respond to any threats from Iran. “We will have to be vigilant against this threat for a long time to come,” tweeted New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio immediately following the drone strike on Soleimani.

Law enforcement in Los Angeles stepped up patrols at potential targets, sources told local media, though they acknowledged there were no specific threats.

Such rhetoric and actions, Iranian Americans said, often unfairly puts them on the defence, and makes them targets for possible discrimination. “Posts like this insinuate that Iran is a terrorist country and thus Iranians

are terrorists,” Lily Tajaddini, an IranianAmerican activist in Washington, DC, told Al Jazeera. “It makes people feel scared to say they are Iranian in fear of how others might react because all over the news they are telling you that Iranians are terrorists and you should be afraid.”

Tajaddini said she, too, believes this kind of rhetoric leads to the spread of Iranophobia.

“State officials say they take these actions to make our communities safer, but who is really safer when they are targeting members of their communities for being Iranian?” she asked.

For some, the fear has become a reality, with reports of increased interrogation and visa denials for those trying to enter the US. Last week, Mohammad Shahab Dehghani Hossein Abadi, a 24-year-old Iranian student enrolled in a university in Boston, Massachusetts, was deported despite a court order halting his removal. At least a dozen other Iranian students have been returned home despite having visas, US media reported.

Just after the killing of Soleimani, a group of dozens of Iranians and Iranian Americans were detained - some for up to 10 hours - at a border crossing in Blaine, Washington, and asked about their political affiliations.

Jerusalem, Palestine - United States President Donald Trump’s Middle East plan, also known as the “Deal of the Century”, has been denounced by the Palestinians as a “new Balfour Declaration”.

Trump revealed his plan on Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu standing by his side at the White House.

Introducing the plan as a “win-win solution” for both Israelis and Palestinians, he said the deal would ensure the establishment of a two-state solution for the IsraeliPalestinian conflict.

Trump led his statement by introducing the Israeli side of the plan, announcing that Jerusalem will remain the “undivided capital” of Israel, adding that this has “already been done”. He also said he hoped to implement the plan “immediately”.

Netanyahu, speaking after Trump, thanked the US president for a “historic day”, adding that the plan would see Israeli law implemented in the occupied West Bank’s Jordan Valley as a means to ensuring the security of Israel. Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military sent troops there as reinforcement in anticipation of possible clashes following the announcement.

‘Already in the works’

Palestinian politicians and activists slammed the proposal, with many pledging to “fight against the plan”.

Fakhry Abu Diab, a Palestinian activist in Silwan neighbourhood in East Jerusalem, told Al Jazeera: “It is obvious that Trump is repeating history by establishing new Balfour Declaration.

“He [Trump] is giving away what he does not own, to people who have no right to it,” said Abu Diab.

Following Britain’s pledge to establish “a national home for the Jewish people”, the Balfour Declaration was issued on November 2, 1917. It turned the Zionist aim of establishing a Jewish state in Palestine into a reality.

The British pledge has been viewed as one of the main catalysts of the Nakba and regarded as one of the most controversial and contested documents in the modern history of the Arab world.

“This deal only secures Israeli interests while violating international law and some of the main pillars of a Palestinian state - Jerusalem and the Jordan Valley.

“After decades of sacrificing our lives for this cause, we want our freedom and a Palestinian state along the 1967 border, not some economic gains.

“We completely reject this plan and will continue to fight it,” he added.

Canada invites 3,400 Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residence

he Government of Canada issued 3,400 invitations to apply for Canadian permanent residence to Express Entry candidates in a draw held January 22.

The cut-off Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in today’s draw was 471, a reduction of 2 points over the minimum score in the previous Express Entry draw held January 8.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has now issued a total of 6,800 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in 2020 through the Express Entry system.

Canada has higher admissions targets for 2020 and 2021 for the various programs managed by the Express Entry system.

The target for new permanent resident admissions through the three federal highskilled programs is slated to rise to 85,800 this year and 88,800 in 2021.

True Happiness

By: Shabnam Khan - Family Counsellor ife is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose” For most people, feeling happy and finding life meaningful are both important and related goals. But do happiness and meaning always go together? Recent research suggests that while happiness and a sense of meaning often overlap, they also diverge in important and surprising ways.

As one might expect, people’s happiness levels were positively correlated with whether they saw their lives as meaningful. However, the two measures were not identical – suggesting that what makes us happy may not always bring more meaning, and vice versa.

To probe for differences between the two, the researchers examined the survey items that asked detailed questions about people’s feelings and moods, their relationships with others, and their day-to-day activities.

Feeling happy was strongly correlated with seeing life as easy, pleasant, and free from difficult or troubling events. Happiness was also correlated with being in good health and generally feeling well most of the time.

However, none of these things were correlated with a greater sense of meaning. Feeling good most of the time might help us feel happier, but it doesn’t necessarily bring a sense of purpose to our lives.

Interestingly, their findings suggest that money, contrary to popular sayings, can indeed buy happiness. Having enough money to buy what one needs in life, as well as what one desires, were also positively correlated with greater levels of happiness. However,

having enough money seemed to make little difference in life’s sense of meaning. People from wealthy countries tend to be happier, however, they don’t see their lives as more meaningful. While people from low income countries tend to see their lives as more meaningful. Although the reasons are not totally clear, this might be related to greater religious belief, having more children, and stronger social ties among those living in poorer countries. Perhaps instead of saying that “money doesn’t buy happiness,” we ought to say instead that “money doesn’t buy meaning.”

Not too surprisingly, our relationships with other people are related to both how happy we are as well as how meaningful we see our lives. Feeling more connected to others improved both happiness and meaning. However, the role we adopt in our relationships makes an important difference. In addition, spending more time with friends was related to greater happiness but not more meaning. In contrast, spending more time with people one loves was correlated with greater meaning but not with more happiness.

When it comes to thinking about how to be happier, many of us fantasize about taking more vacations or finding ways to avoid tasks. However, some tasks which don’t make us happy can, over time, add up to a meaningful life. Even routine activities - talking on the phone, cooking, cleaning, housework, meditating, praying, reading a book, going for a walk, watering the garden - appeared to bring more meaning to people’s lives, but not happiness in the moment.

Day by Day- Life goes on day by day .we are busy in our daily routine busy studying, in our job , in our career. life is hard we are busy and timed struggling in life even successful people have to struggle work hard all are tense and worried and affected emotionally now and then so agreed life is hard . Even if one wants to spend time with family and friends cannot .the modern technology, modern life style has made life easy for us ,more comfortable and more operative but it has its side effects too. We are always on more tense to be perfect or tense to meet deadlines. One is little slow and many jump over. Ask any youngster over instagram, even if they give their every single minutes they give to facebook , twitter, instagram, snapchat etc. it is not enough.

So now the question is how to spend time with family and friends .how to take out time and mood. Connection is the key word .how it is said that turn your weakness into your strength. Same way let’s get connected .if we love someone parents, friends just say it .we are just a phone call or a whats app away. If possible we make a video call too. It’s so good is not iy ?we do not need our letters to reach by post or wait for international calls facility. We just need a phone and wi-fi .we will have to learn to switch on and off. Up to certain extent .yes we will have to train ourselves to leave our outside attention for a while when we take out our shoes when we enter home .we have to take genuine interest in life in people. Yes true emotions recognise our true feelings and honest behaviour is the base. When we take interest in life we are not self centred. We have to think and feel outside the box of I, me and myself. We have to come over selfishness of how this will benefit me and only. In any sport how a good player plays for the team, same way we have to learn to be a team player too. When we are

conned with family friends and others ,we stay human we feel if we feel .we will think , we will give concern if we are concern we will help and are ready to do something even take actions. In fact when we help others or are these for them infect we are helping ourselves too. Have self-worth, respect and good qualities in us comes out thus surprising any bad from coming out Boomerang universe always gives back, can it low of karma or whatever what we so we reap. We cannot withdraw if we have not deposited. Credit has to be paid off with interest.

Participationwhen we participate it fulfills some boredom, some void in us .even if one is CEO or big shot, the joy of making a dinner or Sunday brunch with family or an evening with friends can do wonders to ones soul it can actually make us feel to be human rather than a machine. our school and universities try so hard to cultivate hobbies and teach the importance of volunteer work from early age everybody cannot be highly successful in life but when we do even a small gesture towards being human be helpful or complete a task. Give happiness to others we feel fulfilled as if we have achieve something the reason many us and old people feel that we have not achieved some great milestone or others think that way about them tell them that every [person who does their wok nicely, helps others to achieve their dreams when every small duty is done by people other can work better. We are the link a chain. When we care about others too we will include all in some or the other way on our journey of life. There is always something something extra we can do.

We have to plan and increase our focus capacity not let negativity take over us in this stressful modern life, we have to come up with some solutions to balance. We will have to learn to line then just breathe eat love pray party outing relax work hard call talk wish ask inquire down to earth please excuse sorry help ask help no ego trip but trip to nature etc.

More than 4,520 cases have been reported globally, most of them in China adn especially in Wuhan and nearby cities in Hubei province.

Here is what you need to know: What is coronavirus?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

These viruses were originally transmitted between animals and people. SARS, for instance, was believed to have been transmitted from civet cats to humans while MERS travelled from a type of camel to humans.

Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

The name coronavirus comes from the Latin word corona, meaning crown or halo. Under an electron microscope, the image of the virus is reminiscent of a solar corona.

A novel coronavirus, identified by Chinese authorities on January 7 and currently named 2019-nCoV, is a new strain that had not been previously identified in humans.

Little is known about it, although humanto-human transmission has been confirmed.

What are the symptoms?

According to the WHO, signs of infection include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

In more severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

The incubation period of the coronavirus remains unknown. Some sources say it could be between 10 to 14 days.

How deadly is it?

Some experts say it may not be as deadly as other types of coronavirus such as SARS, which killed nearly 800 people worldwide during a 2002-03 outbreak that also origi-

nated from China.

MERS, which did not spread as widely, was more deadly, killing a third of those it infected.

Where have cases been reported?

Most cases have been reported in China.

All deaths have been in China - the vast majority in Hubei province.

The virus has spread to many Asian countries, as well as Australia, Europe and North America.

What is being done to stop its spread?

There is no vaccine for the new virus.

Chinese authorities have effectively sealed off Wuhan, state media said.

The move was meant to “resolutely contain the momentum of the epidemic spreading” and protect lives, the central city’s special command centre against the virus said, according to state broadcaster CCTV. More than a dozen other Chinese cities also adopted transport restrictions, affecting 56 million people.

Airports around the world have introduced screening measures and some countries are working to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan.

Where did the virus originate?

Chinese health authorities are still trying to determine the origin of the virus, which they say came from a seafood market in Wuhan where wildlife was also traded illegally.

The WHO also says an animal source appears most likely to be the primary source of the outbreak.

Snakes - including the Chinese krait and the cobra - may be the source of the newly discovered virus, according to Chinese scientists.

Is this a global emergency?

The outbreak does not yet constitute a global emergency, the WHO has said.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said the decision to hold off on issuing the declaration used for the gravest epidemics should not be taken as a sign that the body does not think the situation is serious.

“This is an emergency in China, but it has not yet become a global health emergency,” he told reporters.

There have been five global health emergencies since 2005, when the declaration was formalised - swine flu in 2009; polio in 2014; Ebola in 2014; Zika in 2016 and Ebola again in 2019.

The goal of the study is to determine how much ERP youth need to get better and whether different ways of providing the treatment impact how well or quickly it works.

Participants in this study will receive a diagnostic assessment, ERP treatment, and modest compensation for time spent on assessments/travel. Specific details about the study procedures are provided on the back of this page.

Pakistan intensifies Kashmir campaign

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told The Nation yesterday that the government will take up the issue at all forums to expose India’s brutalities ion occupied Kashmir.

“Our embassies have been directed to highlight the issue as we have launched a countrywide Kashmir campaign to unmask India.

The issue will be taken up at all the bilateral and multilateral interactions. We have never ignored Kashmir in any high-level meeting,” he said.

He said that Prime Minister Imran Khan was spearheading the Kashmir campaign.

“The PM is a great ambassador of Kashmir.

This week, the Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world observed Indian Republic Day as Black Day, in protest against India’s continued denial of their right to self-determination. The call for observance of the Black Day was given by All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani, and other Hurriyat leaders and organizations including Mohammed Ashraf Sehrai and Mirwaiz Umar Farooqled Hurriyat forum. The day was marked with a complete strike in occupied Kashmir and anti-India demonstrations and rallies in world capitals.

This year, the observance of the Black Day is also aimed at registering protest against the continued lockdown of occupied Kashmir imposed by India for the past almost six months since August 5, last year. Protest

rallies and demonstrations were also held in Pakistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir.

Stringent measures in the name of security have been taken on India’s Republic Day, bringing more miseries to the already besieged people in occupied Kashmir. Indian troops intensified checking and frisking in Srinagar city and other parts of the territory.

While the Kashmir Valley remains under strict military lockdown on 175th straight day, the Indian troops and police personnel were deployed in strength to keep a watch on the movement of people.

FM Quershi had last week announced the launch of the Kashmir campaign across the country on the directives of PM Khan. He condemned the illegal merger of held Kashmir into the Indian union in violation of all the international laws. He said regional peace and security was under threat due to India’s step of revoking the special status of Occupied Kashmir, adding Kashmiris were under military lockdown by the Indian government from past 172 days.

Asked what US President Donald Trump can do on the Kashmir issue, he said the Trump can convince India not to go for false flag operation.

“Trump can tell them this would be a dangerous step. If they (India) go for it, we will have to respond. We had responded last February too,” he reminded. Under the plan, a culture show was held yesterday in which Kashmir cause was focused. Today (January 28), a photo exhibition will be arranged across the country in which stories of Kashmiri people will be presented.

RED ZONE FILES: Growing unease now infecting govt itself

The unhappiness quotient is on the rise in the city that measures quotients by the hour.

This week, however, unhappiness seems to be percolating down from an unlikely quarter: the ruling party itself.

How can the ruling party be unhappy about its own work? A relevant question indeed, but if the party is broken down into individual fragments of its larger whole, white noise begins to take a coherent shape of grievances, mutterings, grumblings, complaints and quiet finger-pointing.

The last few days have illustrated why there is growing unease within the ruling PTI. The perfect storm of unending mini and mega crises engulfing the government are framing this unease starkly against the sombre and greying political horizon.

“We are doing this to ourselves,” a ruling party lawmaker told me recently. “But no one is willing to listen and no one is willing to admit our own faults,” the lawmaker grumbled. Troubles are mounting and the list of crises is growing longer by the day: shortage of wheat, mistrust of allies, looming problem of sugar, firing of key ministers in KP, IG Sindh controversy and the mother of all disasters — Punjab. Nearly all of these problems, admit PTI insiders, are

self-created or self-generated. And many PTI lawmakers are convinced the mishandling of these problems is eating into their political capital, and perhaps even their vote bank.

Disenchantment within the party should worry the PTI leadership. Worrying, however, is never a plan of action — tackling the root of the worry is. But here’s the conundrum: there is no single root but a growing variety. So where does one start?

For instance, why has only a fraction of the Punjab development budget been utilised so far? Lack of vision, lack of priority or lack of capacity? Why is there no public project worth its name coming up in Punjab or KP (or for that matter Sindh, but that’s for another time)?

For instance, why are the grievances of the allies not being genuinely addressed? Why is severe lack of governance not being accepted as a problem in the two provinces ruled by the PTI? For instance, why is there a growing perception that the famed and much-touted ‘onepageness’ is under strain? For instance, why are senior people within the party complain-

ing about other senior people in the party and accusing them of interfering in others’ domains and focusing more on political statements than genuine work? And for instance, why are so many people — once hyper-motivated — feeling disillusioned?

One constituency politician from Punjab, who had migrated to the PTI before the 2018 election, recently told a colleague from his former party: “Kidhar phans giya hoon maey (where have I landed myself)”.

Another lawmaker, who was a vocal proponent of Tabdeeli, complained that parliamentary performance of his party colleagues had also suffered because most have “stopped being excited”.

There are small reasons for this dismay and a few big reasons, say these lawmakers. For starters, the style of governance is cramping the space for productive decisions. The prime minister works very hard and very long hours, which is a good thing.

But there’s a problem. He has drowned himself in meeting after meeting after meeting of the type that a prime minister should not be drowning himself in. Many of these meetings are far below his level. And yet, he chairs them and discussion happens and then time runs out because there are so many more meetings waiting.

Often the minutes that are taken of the meeting do not reflect what happened in the meeting and sometimes the minutes become a casualty of time. Often decisions are not taken or not clarified or not properly recorded or not communicated or not followed up or not executed in the spirit they were discussed. Multiply this by numerous meetings per day multiplied by seven days

of the week and four weeks of the month.

U-turns are an organic byproduct.

Three other trends are dominating the prevalent culture within the higher echelons of the PTI government: first, gradual vanishing of dissent and debate before decisions; second, a renewed intense focus on pleasing the PTI base by obsessing with accountability of the opponents at the expense of every other issue; and third, an obsession with media coverage and perception-management often at the expense of actual work.

This is the pressure you face when chasing a big total in a limited-over cricket game and not having enough runs on the board by the middle of the innings. The PTI government is realising that the political run rate is increasing dangerously. But parallels with cricket can go only that far.

How do you explain the fact that a big budget has been allocated for Fata districts but the KP government is struggling to convert this money into actual development work on the ground? How do you explain the devastating effect of inflation on citizens without the PTI communication teams succeeding in explaining how this pain will lead to better times (if that be so)? The list goes on.

What is aggravating this unease in the capital’s Red Zone is the absolute refusal of the leadership to acknowledge the existence of this unease. It is understandable if the leaders put up a brave face in public but the problem here is that even in closed-door internal meetings, the leadership is insisting all is well and a combination of mafias plus media is spelling doom and gloom.

The court questioned PEMRA’s representative regarding whether they have a way of monitoring dramas through in-house censors. PEMRA’s lawyer responded that they have a separate forum to do so, keeping in mind their policy that language and visuals in dramas should be within the moral code of society.

Saleem’s lawyer, Munir Gilal said that they have approached the court so that PEMRA be given direction in such matters to which Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar replied that if they find objectionable dialogues and immoral discourse in the drama’s content, they will not just give them direction but also take action.

While summoning Humayun Saeed, the actor who said the aforementioned degrading dialogue, the court also instructed the federal government, PEMRA and other respondents to submit their replies. The hearing was adjourned to February 13.

This isn’t the first time the show has gotten in legal trouble; another petition had been filed in a Lahore civil court earlier this month to halt the release of MPTH’s double finale.

Under Misbah, Pakistan had suffered a 3-0 whitewash against a second-string Sri Lanka side at home and then they lost 2-0 in Australia, the scene of the T20 World Cup later this year. However, upon returning home, Pakistan thumped Bangladesh 2-0 to retain their No.1 ranking in the shortest format, after the third T20I had been washed out.

Despite losing the toss in both completed games, Pakistan thrived and Misbah credited his bowlers for the success. In the first T20I, they restricted Bangladesh to 141 for 5 and then in the second, they kept them to an even lower total - 136 for 6.

“The most important thing for us was to win,” Misbah said. “Because when you lose back-toback series and even before we had a poor run losing T20 games, so it was really important for our confidence to win. Obviously, credit should

be given to our bowling - the way our young bowlers never gave Bangladesh a chance to sneak in to get into a position to pose any threat.

“So, overall it’s a good performance and for Pakistan cricket it’s good. For World Cup, we still have plenty of time - the PSL and then more international games, so we will have more challenges and difficult situations coming up to get ourselves prepared.”

Since Misbah has taken over as coach-cumselector, Pakistan’s squad has seen plenty of chopping and changing. After he had included a number of fresh faces for the Australia tour, Misbah fell back on the experience of the 39year old Mohammad Hafeez and 37-year old Shoaib Malik for the home series against Bangladesh. The two seniors vindicated their returns with match-winning half-centuries.

“Whenever both seniors weren’t there in the team… questions were asked of me,” Misbah said.”I never really talked about ending someone’s career or why we are not considering them. But, sometimes you do look around and check your resources and do experiment to see

“So, after two series we have realised that we cannot go to all out with youngsters and we need experience. So, obviously Babar [Azam] did back them and, as expected, their experience did work for us. So, the doors are never shut. So, if any player who is fit, performing and required, he should definitely be considered. If their form is helping your team, then I don’t see any problem in picking them.”
