Who is Kulbhushan Jadhav?

ndian national Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav was born in the city of Sangli in the Indian state of Maharashtra on April 15, 1969, according to a medical report released by the Foreign Office.

However, a fake passport for Jadhav under the pseudonym Hossein Mubarak Patel, showed he was born on Aug 30, 1968.

The cover name, he explained in a confessional video released by Inter-Services Public Relations last year, was taken for “intelligence gathering for Indian agencies”.

A resident of Mumbai’s suburban Powai neighbourhood, Jadhav belongs to a family of police officers.

In his statement, the Indian national said he is currently a serving officer in the Indian Navy ─ a claim India has denied.

He added that he joined the National Defence Academy in 1987, and then the Indian Navy in 1991, where he served until December 2001. After the parliament attack, he said he began to ‘contribute his services’ towards information and intelligence gathering in India.

“I am still a serving officer in the Indian Navy and will be due for retirement by 2022 as a commissioned officer in the Indian Navy,” the spy confessed.

India says he is a former Indian Navy officer.

Members of his Mumbai-based family told The Indian Express last year that Jadhav had become a businessman after taking premature retirement from the Navy, and travelled often in connection with his business.

A report in DNA India claimed Jadhav was “engaged in a legitimate business of operating ferries from the Iranian port town of Bandar Abbas”. Jadhav said he had commenced intelligence operations in 2003, and established a business in

Chahbahar, Iran, where he was able to go undetected and visit Karachi in 2003 and 2004.

He was picked up by Indian spy agency Research and Analysis Wing at the end of 2013, and has been directing various subversive activities in Karachi and Balochistan. His job, he said, was to hold meetings with Baloch insurgents and collaborate with them to carry out activities “of a criminal nature, leading to the killing or maiming of Pakistani citizens.”

Jadhav, in pursuit of targets set by his RAW handlers, was arrested by Pakistani authorities on March 3, 2016, when he attempted to cross over into the country from the Saravan border in Iran.

India, however, alleges that Jadhav was abducted by Pakistan from Iran, according to IndiaToday.

Indian intelligence officials suspected that Jadhav’s phone was under surveillance by the Pakistani intelligence, and that his habits and mannerisms, including phone calls in Marathi to his family, gave away his identity. Since Jadhav’s arrest, India has been denied consular access to him, although he was provided with a defending officer as per legal provisions during his Field General Court Martial trial.

He was sentenced to death by the FGCM on April 10, 2017.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Wednesday announced its verdict on the Kulbhushan Jadhav case, ruling that Jadhav be allowed consular access immediately and asking Pakistan to ensure “effective review and reconsideration of his conviction and sentences”.

The ICJ, however, rejected all other remedies sought by India, which included the annulment of the military court decision convicting Jadhav, restricting Pakistani from executing the sentence, securing Jadhav’s release and ordering his return to India. Pakistan’s team, headed by Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan, had reached The Hague earlier in the day to hear the verdict. The team also included Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal.

The ICJ said that even though it had found Pakistan in violation of Article 36 the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (VCCR), “it is not the conviction and sentence of Mr. Jadhav which are to be regarded as a violation of Article 36 of the Vienna Convention.”

The most the ICJ said it could do was to order Pakistan to cease violation of Article 36 and review the case in light of how that violation may have affected the case’s outcome.“The Court notes that Pakistan acknowledges that the appropriate remedy in the present case would be effective review and

reconsideration of the conviction and sentence,” it observed.

To this end, Pakistan was directed to immediately inform Jadhav of his rights under Article 36, grant India consular access, and then review the case while considering, under the laws of Pakistan, how not doing so earlier may have impacted the case’s outcome.

Article 36 of the Vienna Convention simply states that when a national of a foreign country is arrested, they must be informed of the right to have their country’s consulate notified and should also have the right to regular consultation with their consulate’s officials during their detention and trial.

Pakistan had argued that Article 36 is not applicable to persons believed to be involved in espionage.

“The Court considers that the violation of the rights set forth in Article 36, paragraph 1, of the Vienna Convention, and its implications for the principles of a fair trial, should be fully examined and properly addressed during the review and reconsideration process,” the court directed.

“In particular, any potential prejudice and the implications for the evidence and the right of defence of the accused should receive close scrutiny during the review and reconsideration,” it said.

“The Court notes that the obligation to provide effective review and reconsideration can be carried out in various ways. The choice of means is left to Pakistan,” it added.

However, it stressed that, “Pakistan shall take all measures to provide for effective review and reconsideration, including, if necessary, by enacting appropriate legislation.”

While that matter is decided, Pakistan has been directed to suspend the execution of the death penalty awarded to Jadhav. S. Dawn.com

ICJ rejects India’s plea for Jadhav’s return, grants consular access

“Delhi defeated. ICJ knocks out India’s major demands about Kulbhushan Jadhav on his release and annulment of sentence.” As the International Court of Justice (ICJ) verdict in the case of Indian spy Kulbushan Jadhav was announced on Wednesday, members of the legal fraternity as well as journalists took to Twitter to weigh in on the matter, with most viewing it as a favourable outcome for Pakistan. Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi termed it a victory for Pakistan and to clear up any confusion regarding the convicted spy’s custody said that he shall “remain in Pakistan” and be “treated in accordance with the laws” of the country.

“Commander Jadhav shall remain in Pakistan. He shall be treated in accordance with the laws of Pakistan. This is a victory for Pakistan,” he said.

International Lawyer and founder of Courting the Law, Taimoor Malik, in a series of tweets, provided a useful summation on the case, highlighting that the matter had been “left to Pakistani courts”. Reema Omar, the International Legal Advisor for South Asia at the ICJ, noted that India’s appeal for Jadhav’s release and return was not granted by the Court.“The Court has, however, rejected most of the remedies sought by India, including annulment of military court decision convicting Jadhav, his release and safe passage

to India,” she wrote. Journalist Mubashir Zaidi cautioned those on “the other side of the border” on jumping the gun and celebrating too early. “All the experts across the border claiming #KalbushanJadhav sentence has been suspended should read this part of the judgment #Kalbhushan to reconsider their opinion as the ruling says otherwise,” he said.

Journalist Talat Hussain condensed the ICJ verdict down in the following few words, reminding readers to remember that however neutral the verdict, it is a defeat of sorts for India, as Pakistan shall effectively be reviewing the case “through its own means”. “Delhi defeated. Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry congratulated the nation on “a great outcome”. ”Apparently news reports from Hague suggests that not only Indian case for acquittal, release, return stands rejected but apparently [International] Court also upheld Jurisdiction of [Military] Court in #Kalbhushan case. Indeed a great outcome. Congratulations to Pakistan legal team for putting up [a] great fight,” he tweeted. Express Tribune’s executive editor Fahd Husain termed the ruling “not too bad for Pakistan” and “pretty bad for India”.

Nasim Zehra, senior journalist and author, in response to Reema Omar’s tweet, said that the judgment acknowledges Pakistan’s position that Jadhav is a spy and while asking that a Pakistani court review the military court’s decision, it doesn’t quash the military court’s decision and safe passage to India.

Hafiz Saeed arrested by Punjab CTD, sent on judicial remand in terrorism financing case

Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed was on Wednesday arrested in connection with a terrorism financing case while on his way from Lahore to Gujranwala, officials of the Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department confirmed.According to a spokesperson for CTD Punjab, Saeed was sent to prison on judicial remand after the counter-terrorism department presented him before a Gujranwala anti-terrorism court (ATC). The CTD has been directed to complete its investigation and submit a charge

sheet to the court in the stipulated time. Earlier, according to CTD sources, Saeed was arrested by CTD Punjab in the Gujranwala jurisdiction while he was on his way to an ATC in Gujranwala to seek bail. A JuD spokesperson also confirmed the arrest to Reuters. On July 3, the top 13 leaders of the banned JuD, including Saeed and Naib Emir Abdul Rehman Makki, were booked in nearly two dozen cases for terror financing and money laundering under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. ‘Black day’ to be observed against PTI govt on July 25 The anti-government alliance will observe a countrywide “black day” on July 25 against alleged rigging in the July 25, 2018, general elections, PPP leader Waqar Mehdi announced in a press conference on Tuesday at Bilawal House, Karachi after a multiparty meeting. The opposition parties in the National Assembly also decided to hold a general convention on the same day outside the Mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Central leaders of the opposition parties will address the event. Conventions will also be held in other provincial capitals.

The decision comes at a time when the country’s political atmosphere is already charged and the tussle between the ruling and opposition parties has reached the next level. Opposition parties have submitted a no-confidence resolution against the

Senate chairman [who enjoys the support of the ruling party], while the ruling PTI has taken the same step against the deputy chairman of the Senate who belongs to the PPP. The participants of the meeting also constituted an organising committee for the event. Two members each from the PPP, the PML-N, the Jamiat Ulma-i-Islam-Fazal (JUIF), the Awami National Party (ANP), the National Party (NP), the Jamiat Ulma-i-Pakistan (JUP), the Pakhtunkhwa Mili Awami Party (PkMAP) will be a part of the committee.

The PPP leader said that inflation, joblessness and poverty have increased immensely since the incumbent “selected” government was “imposed”. He added that the July 25 general convention would become a milestone in the country’s politics.........

US congresswomen targeted by Trump: ‘We will not be silenced’

Four Democratic congresswomen call Trump’s racist tweets a ‘distraction’, instead focus attention on issues.

Washington, DC - The four Democratic congresswomen who were attacked by US President Donald Trump in racist tweets over the weekend said on Monday they will “not be silenced”, and instead turned their attention to the treatment of immigrants detained at the border, healthcare and education, among other issues.

US Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayana Pressley and Rashida Tlaib told reporters that Trump’s attacks are a “distraction” from his policies, and encouraged people to not “take the bait”.

“This is simply a disruption, a distraction from the callous, chaotic and corrupt culture of this administration,” said Pressley. “We want to get to the business of the American people and why were sent here: reducing the costs of prescription drugs, addressing the public health crisis and epidemic that is gun violence, addressing the racial wealth gap and yes, making sure that families stay together.”

The women were responding to a series of racists tweets and comments by the US president on Sunday and Monday in which he told the congresswomen to go back to where they came from. Although Trump did not

name the politicians, he was almost certainly referring to the four freshmen representatives, most of whom the president has criticised repeatedly since they took office earlier this year.

All four politicians are women of colour and all are US citizens. Only Omar was born outside of the United States.

“I want to tell the children across this country ... that no matter what the president says, this country belongs to you, and it belongs everyone,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

The president’s comments received backlash from politicians on both sides of the aisle, world leaders and many online.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the House of Representatives would soon vote on a resolution condemning the president’s racist tweets. Although Republican leaders refused to comment, some members of the party said Trump went too far.

Republican Senator Tim Scott, the only black Republican senator, said the president used “racially offensive language”.

Republican Representative Mike Turner called on Trump to apologise.

Others, including Senator John Cornyn, attempted to paint the tweets as “a mistake and an unforced error”. He added that he didn’t think Trump was racist.

Suspected arson attack on Japan animation studio, 12 dead

At least 35 injured, the emergency services said, as rescuers search for those feared trapped inside the building.

At least 12 people are presumed dead and more people are missing after a suspected arson attack on an animation studio in the Japanese city of Kyoto, fire official have told Associated Press.

The blaze in the city of Kyoto appeared to have been started deliberately, police said, but there was no immediate information on a possible motive.

smoke pouring from windows of the threestorey building. Its facade was charred black on much of one side where the flames had burned out of the windows.

Another 35 people were injured, 10 of them seriously, a fire department spokesman told AFP news agency.

“Rescue operations are continuing, and we are trying to bring out several victims who are trapped inside the three-story building, including ones who may not be able to move by themselves,” a second fire department spokesman said. Source: aljazeera.com

Defying Trump, US House votes to block Saudi arms sales

Measures related to $8bn in arms sales to Saudi Arabia now go to Trump, who is expected to veto the resolutions..

Washington, DC - The United States House of Representatives on Wednesday approved three resolutions aimed at blocking President Donald Trump’s planned sale of guided missiles and other weapons to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Jordan. The approval of the measures is another political rebuke of Trump’s relationship with Saudi Arabia, which has drawn sharp criticism in Congress over human rights abuses and the mounting death toll from the war in Yemen. Citing new military tensions with Iran in May, Trump used an “emergency”

loophole in US arms control law to bypass Congress to complete the sale of more than eight billion dollars in weapons to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan. The move circumvented US law that gives Congress the power to review major weapons sales. Many politicians view Trump’s claims of an emergency as exaggerated, pointing out that most of the weapons sales at issue could not be delivered for months, even years.

The House vote sends three of 22 joint resolutions of disapproval of already passed by the Senate to the president who is expected to veto the measures.

GENEVA -- The deadly Ebola outbreak in Congo is now an international health emergency, the World Health Organization announced Wednesday after the virus spread this week to a city of 2 million people.

A WHO expert committee declined on three previous occasions to advise the United Nations health agency to make the declaration for this outbreak, even though other experts say it has long met the conditions. More than 1,600 people have died since August in the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, which is unfolding in a region described as a war zone. A declaration of a global health emergency often brings greater international attention and aid, along with concerns that nervous governments might overreact with border closures. The declaration comes days after the virus was confirmed in Goma, a major regional crossroads in northeastern Congo on the Rwandan border, with an international airport. Worries about the spread of the disease were also heighted after a sick Congolese fish trader travelled to Uganda and back while symptomatic -- and later died of Ebola.

While the risk of regional spread remains high, the risk outside the region remains low, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said after the announcement in Geneva.

The international emergency “should not be used to stigmatize or penalize the very people who are most in need of our help,” he said. Tedros insisted that the declaration was not made to raise more money -- even though WHO estimated “hundreds of millions” of dollars would be needed to stop

the epidemic. Dr. Joanne Liu, president of Doctors Without Borders, said she hoped the emergency designation would prompt a radical reset of Ebola response efforts.

“The reality check is that a year into the epidemic, it’s still not under control, and we are not where we should be,” she said. “We cannot keep doing the same thing and expect different results.”

Liu said vaccination strategies should be broadened and that more efforts should be made to build trust within communities.

This is the fifth such declaration in history.

Previous emergencies were declared for the devastating 2014-16 Ebola outbreak in West Africa that killed more than 11,000 people, the emergence of Zika in the Americas, the swine flu pandemic and polio.

WHO defines a global emergency as an “extraordinary event” that constitutes a risk to other countries and requires a co-ordinated international response. Last month, the outbreak spilled across the border for the first time when a family brought the virus into Uganda after attending the burial in Congo of an infected relative. Even then, the expert committee advised against a declaration.

Alexandra Phelan, a global health expert at Georgetown University Law Center, said Wednesday’s declaration was long overdue.

eloved Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia circa 570 C.E. He is an example for all of humanity. He was a remarkable man at all times. He excelled in all walks of life by being a prophet, ruler, orator, soldier, husband, friend, father, uncle, nephew, and a grandfather. He was a man of love, patience, courage, wisdom, generosity, intelligence and magnitude who inspired millions of lives throughout the world.

God says in the Quran that he was sent as a mercy for the people of the world.

“We sent thee not save as a mercy for the peoples.” (Quran 21:107) His Prophetic Mission began at the age of forty, circa 610 C.E., and continued until 632 C.E. From the path of ignorance, mankind was lead to the straight path and was blessed with the guidance of God. Shortly before his death, Prophet Muhammad delivered a sermon during the Hajj, which came to be known as his “Final Sermon”. This final sermon was not only a reminder to his followers, but also an important admonition. The final sermon confirms the end of his Prophetic Mission.

Year 10 A.H. of the Islamic Calendar is considered to be one of the most significant years for three reasons. Firstly, this was the year when the Prophet delivered his Last Sermon during his farewell pilgrimage to Mecca. Secondly, this was the year where a number of deputations came to the Prophet to announce their Islam as well as their tribes. Thirdly, it was the golden period of

Islam when multitudes of people embraced the faith by accepting the message of the Prophet.

Prophet Muhammad undertook his farewell pilgrimage in the year 10 A.H. His farewell pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the most significant historical events in the minds of Muslims, for it was the first and last pilgrimage made by Prophet Muhammad, as well as being the model for performing the fifth pillar of Islam, the Hajj.

Prophet Muhammad’s final sermon was delivered during the Hajj of the year 632 C.E., the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th month of the lunar year, at Arafat, the most blessed day of the year. There were countless Muslims present with the Prophet during his last pilgrimage when he delivered his last Sermon.

The Final Sermon: After praising, and thanking God, the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said “O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again.

Therefore, listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. God has Judged that there shall be no interest, and that all the interest due to Al-Abbas ibn Abd’el Muttalib shall henceforth be waived...

WHAT IS QURBANI?

urbani, Sacrifice or Udhiyah as it’s known in Arabic, is the word that describes the sacrifice of an animal to Allah (swt) during the period of Eid ul Adha.

On Eid Ul Adha, which marks the completion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, the Muslim world celebrates and honours the tradition of the Prophet Ibrahim (Alahi Salaam) by sacrificing an animal and distributing the meat to those in need.

WHO SHOULD PERFORM QURBANI? The general rule is that Qurbani should be performed by adults of sane mind and affordable means. The Hanafi ulema say it is wajib (obligatory) while the other schools of jurisprudence say it is sunnah. However, it is generally agreed that if a person can afford Qurbani, they should perform it.

If you have any questions or doubts about this aspect of Qurbani, please consult your local shaykh, imam or mosque.

WHAT ANIMALS ARE SACRIFICED AT QURBANI? The animals to be slaughtered at Qurbani are goats, sheep, cattle (cows or bulls), buf-

falo or camels. According to the rules of Qurbani, they can be male or female, but should be in good health, free from disability or handicap, and above a certain age.

Goats and sheep must be at least one year old, while cattle must be two years, and camels five years.

HOW MANY QURBANI ANIMALS DO I HAVE TO SACRIFICE? Qurban animals have shares. Sheep and goats have one share each, camels and cattle each have seven shares. So for a single person, Qurbani is fulfilled with a sheep or a goat. Up to seven people can share in the purchase of a cow or a camel, and the sacrifice will be made for the seven.

Many people do record names. However, it is not necessary to give the name of the person/s, even if you are making a Qurbani on their behalf, as long as you have made the intention that you are giving the Qurbani on their behalf.

WHEN IS QURBANI PERFORMED? Qurbani can be performed from the 10th day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah until the

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and it may be that the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O God, that I have conveyed your message to your people.”

Thus the beloved Prophet completed his Final Sermon, and upon it, near the summit of Arafat, the revelation came down: “…This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My Grace upon you, and have chosen Islam for you as your religion…” (Quran 5:3) Even today the Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad is passed to every Muslim in every corner of the world through all possible means of communication. Muslims are reminded about it in mosques and in lectures. Indeed the meanings found in this sermon are indeed astounding, touching upon some of the most important rights God has over humanity, and humanity has over each other. Though the Prophet’s soul has left this world, his words are still living in our hearts.

Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under a trust from God and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God, perform your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, and offer Zakat. Perform Hajj if you have the means.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white; [none have superiority over another] except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother sun sets on the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah. The best time is to perform the act of Qurbani is immediately after the completion of the Eid-ul-Adha prayers.

WHEN SHOULD WE GIVE MONEY FOR QURBANI? Money for Qurbanis in Rajasthan in India has to reach 5 days prior to the day of Eid-ulAdha for the volunteers to buy and transport the animals. Please be wise and do not leave for the last minute.

HOW IS QURBANI MEAT DISTRIBUTED? Ideally, the meat from Qurbani should be divided in three equal parts - one for the home, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor and needy. The meat from Qurban can be distributed to the poor or rich, Muslim or non-Muslim. However, because of the relative lack of poverty in Western countries, many Muslims prefer to have their Qurbani performed in poorer countries or those in dire need, and the meat to be distributed to the neediest or those suffering adversity and poverty. OTTAWA – After campaigning and coming to power on a promise of change, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party will be heading to your doorsteps this summer seeking a second term.

After nearly four years of Trudeau government, here’s how the country looks different today than it did in 2015.

New focus on gender representation The world took note in 2015 when Trudeau strode up the driveway at Rideau Hall with 15 men and 15 women who would form the country’s first-ever gender-balanced federal cabinet. Since taking that first step, the Liberals under Trudeau have: moved to legislate pay equity in the federal sector, made the national anthem gender-neutral, enshrined in law protections for transgender people, and required gender-based analysis to be conducted on major policies. The Liberal government also has pledged to increase international aid spending for women’s health and promoted the status of women portfolio to a full department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE).

Two third-party groups disclose first ad spending in pre-election period

OTTAWA - Elections Canada says two third-party groups have started spending money on political advertising in period leading up to the federal election.

Canada Growth Council, a pro-energy, profree-enterprise group, spent almost $11,000 on ads in Liberal-held ridings in Regina and Calgary.The group also reported $15,000 in contributions, two-thirds of which came from one oil executive. Fair Vote Canada, a third-party group that promotes electoral reform, raised almost $19,000 in contributions from 311 people and has spent just under $600 on election activities during the pre-election period. The two are the first to have reports on their activities published on Elections Canada’s website.

Suspect sketch released after woman assaulted on SFU campus

Days after a young woman was allegedly assaulted on SFU’s Burnaby campus, police have released a composite sketch of a suspect. Authorities said the 19-year-old victim was walking on a trail near University Drive and West Campus Road at around 8:30 p.m.

Sunday she noticed a man following her.

According to a safety alert posted by the university, the man then tried to pull her into the bushes. Fortunately, she was able to break free and run to the parking lot of Horizons restaurant. The suspect is described as a 5’9” tall South Asian man, 19-23 years old, with brown eyes. He was wearing a black turban, a blue long-sleeved shirt, grey sweatpants and black sandals. Police asked anyone who recognizes the man in the suspect sketch they released Wednesday to reach out and help investigators identify him. Authorities are also hoping to speak with two women who helped the victim in the Horizons parking lot shortly after the alleged assault.

Canadian officials flagged 900 food items from China with ‘problems’ over 2 years

Canadian inspectors intercepted nearly 900 food products from China over concerns about faulty labels, unmentioned allergens and harmful contaminants that included glass and metal between 2017 and early 2019, according to internal federal records.

The document provides an inside look at imports from China that caught the attention of officials for appearing to fall short of Canadian standards — from gum balls with “extraneous” metal, to three-minute chow mein that contained an insect, to spicy octopus feet flagged for a “non-specific hazard.”

The list, compiled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, was obtained through access-to-information law.

Its release comes at a time of significant public interest in Canada about cross-border food inspections, especially those involving China. The scrutiny of agricultural goods has been central to a diplomatic dispute between Canada and its second-biggest trading partner. Bilateral frictions have intensified since the December arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver and China’s subsequent detention of two Canadians on espionage allegations.

The governing Liberals have come under pressure from rival Conservatives to respond by taking a harder line when it comes to Chinese imports.

In recent weeks, China asked Canada to suspend all its meat-export certificates to the Asian country after Chinese customs inspectors detected residue from a restricted feed additive, called ractopamine, in a batch of Canadian pork products. A statement by China’s embassy in Ottawa said the investigation uncovered at least 188 forged veterinary health certificates and argued the Canadian system had “obvious safety loopholes.” Chinese authorities have also blocked imports of Canadian canola seeds, alleging they found pests in some shipments. The

federal government says it has tried unsuccessfully to send a delegation of inspectors to China to examine the evidence.

The economic consequences of China’s trade actions on Canadian food shipments, as well as the detentions of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, are widely seen as attempts by Beijing to pressure the Liberal government into releasing Meng.

The list from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency shows it’s not uncommon for inspectors to raise concerns about imports from China. Between the beginning of 2017 and the end of February this year, agency officials ”detected problems” with 889 food or food ingredient imports into Canada from China, according to the document.

Only four food shipments, however, from China were refused entry into Canada over that period, CFIA’s quarterly reports show.

An agency spokeswoman said CFIA investigates concerns to determine if it’s a hazard or fails to comply with Canadian standards.

When necessary, she said officials take action — including minor label corrections, recalls, product seizure, entry refusals and the cancellation of licences.

Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said in an emailed statement that the issues in the CFIA list do not necessarily correlate to a particular problem with imported food products from foreign countries.........

As up to four days of public hearings on why gas prices in Metro Vancouver are consistently among the highest in the country got underway, both critics and industry experts slammed the government-mandated inquiry by the BC Utilities Commission.

While members of the independent BCUC panel ask oil and gas company executives and their lawyers an exhaustive list of questions such as how companies set their rack prices and probe into why retail prices in B.C. are higher than in provinces with no refineries, they aren’t permitted to examine the role government policy, including taxes might play in shaping prices that topped a record $1.70 a litre in May. On Wednesday, Premier John Horgan defended the inquiry.

“Our policies aren’t excluded from public scrutiny,” Horgan said. “They’re published everywhere…there’s no mystery that there’s taxation at the pump.”

The investigation, which Horgan mandated

in May, and which must deliver a final report by Aug. 30, will instead focus on factors that include the reasons behind price fluctuations, and how competition may or may not impact pricing. At Wednesday’s hearing, dubbed an “oral workshop,” Henry Kahwaty, an economist hired by Parkland, which owns over 100 Chevron stations in Metro Vancouver, denied any evidence of price setting or “collusion” between competitors.

Opposition Leader Andrew Wilkinson blasted both the inquiry and the premier on Tuesday, calling it a “half-baked” investigation that wouldn’t bring any answers or relief to British Columbians.

“If you want real answers, if you want the truth, let the inquiry ask anything it wants to,” Wilkinson said.

Gas price analyst Dan McTeague with GasWizard.com called the inquiry a “halfhearted attempt by the government to deflect.”

Fifty years ago, astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Niel Armstrong, took the first steps on the moon. The moment unified hundreds of millions of people worldwide in a way never seen before or since.

People tuned in to radios or watched on their television screens on July 20, 1969, as Armstrong, who took the first steps 18 minutes before Aldrin, declared, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. The launch took place four days earlier on July 16, 1969.

Astronaut Michael Collins, who orbited the moon as Armstrong and Aldrin explored the surface, recently told the Associated Press, “how often can you get people around our globe to agree on anything? Hardly ever.”

The now-88-year-old added, “It was a wonderful achievement in the sense that people everywhere around the planet applauded it: north, south, east, west, rich, poor, Communist, whatever.”

The moment, aimed at winning the space race and beating the Soviet Union to the moon, was the result of eight years of work by more than 400,000 people and billions of dollars. After six more missions, the Apollo programme was ended in 1972.

1960s and 1980s. Despite several waves of state repression since the 1990s, the Muslim Brotherhood-inspired religious movement has maintained an influence over the years. Although groups within the movement held a range of ideas, they believed in non-violence and supported an intersection between religion and politics.

Several Sahwa figures worked to increase the role of religious scholars in politics as well as public representation in the Saudi state, challenging the royal family’s hegemony.

What is the Sahwa?

The Sahwa is a phenomenon which saw Muslim Brotherhood-inspired reformist movements influence Saudi society.

In its original sense, it has ceased to exist, but the Sahwa’s ideas and activists remain influential.

Dating back to the 1950s, when King Faysal al-Saud was in power, Saudi Arabia gave shelter to thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members who had fled repressive governments in Egypt, Syria and elsewhere.

The exiles propagated their ideology as they became entrenched in key government positions and lead educational roles at universities and schools. They also incor-

porated elements of Saudi religious culture into their way of thinking.

“Members of the Muslim Brotherhood saw the need to incorporate Saudi traditions into their outlooks as they adapted to their new environment,” said Saad al-Faqih, a Saudi dissident who grew up at the height of the Sahwa and who heads the Movement for Islamic Reform in Arabia.

The movement was therefore born out of a marriage between the Muslim Brotherhood’s ideology and the Saudi state’s SalafiWahhabi tradition, said al-Faqih.

“The Sahwa was an amalgam of the two traditions. It produced a strong and impressive approach that succeeded in attracting the youth and revolutionising society,” said al-Faqih.

“MBS’s current crackdown on Sahwa will fail. Ideas cannot be suppressed.

When the time is right, these people will re-emerge and express themselves once again.”

By the 1970s, the Sahwa had become a network of several religious groups that adopted a wide range of religious and social outlooks, some more conservative than others.

“The Sahwa is not a movement, but a phenomenon. It developed naturally rather than at the hands of a certain group of people. It also included many activists and a range of ideologies,” explained al-Faqih.

Some say Sahwa led religious revival and reform, which was experienced throughout the Muslim world.

“The Sahwa is an Islamic revival that arose from among the grassroots as an expression of faith in Islam as a comprehensive way of life,” Ahmed bin Rashid bin Said, a Saudi professor of communication who now lives in exile in the United Kingdom, told Al Jazeera.

What is Sahwa’s ideology and what does it want?

At their inception, Sahwa movements were defined by their propagation of a counterculture that spoke against prevalent social norms. In time, their outlook became more politicised.

According to al-Faqih, “Islamist” groups that developed under the umbrella of the Sahwa mostly focused on education and social activities, such as setting up summer camps for young people.

“Sahwa’s view attracted the youth that had been sidelined by the state’s clergy. It focused on building pride in the Muslim identity and a sense of responsibility towards Muslims around the world,” said alFaqih.

In addition, religion was considered as having a role in politics, an atypical view in Saudi Arabia at the time.

“Traditionally, the Saudi clergy left politics to al-Saud [Saudi ruling family], but new leaders [from within Sahwa] encouraged an interest in non-traditional views such as politics and voting,” said al-Faqih. “They saw Islam through a practical and comprehensive lens that addresses all issues.”

Severe sanctions reimposed after US nuclear deal pullout aimed at making life unbearable for ordinary Iranians, FM says.

US sanctions on Iran are “deliberately targeting innocent civilians” and amount to economic terrorism, its foreign minister said.

Mohammad Javad Zarif made the comments on Wednesday at the United Nations in New York City. Earlier he said Iran needed ballistic missiles to protect itself from US-backed foreign invaders - an arsenal the United States argues must be curtailed.

Tensions between Iran and the US sharply escalated after President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers and reimposed punishing sanctions, sending its economy into freefall.

Trump called the nuclear deal one-sided, but for years it successfully prevented Iran from developing an atomic bomb.

The US is “deliberately targeting innocent civilians to achieve illegitimate political objectives” with the severe sanctions, Zarif told a UN forum. The sanctions have exacerbated an economic crisis that has sent Iran’s currency plummeting, and has also blocked vital goods such as medicine from entering the country. Iranians face severe shortages and inflated prices for what is still on store shelves. As economic hardship deepens, about 30 percent of patients now buy medicine over the counter without a prescription because people cannot afford to pay physician fees, Iraj Harirchi, the deputy minister of health, said earlier this month.

He said in an interview with NBC News earlier this week if the US wants to talk about

The foreign minister’s remarks suggested a possible opening for talks as tensions remain high. But the Iranian mission to the UN promptly called Zarif ’s suggestion purely “hypothetical”.

Iranian missiles were “absolutely and under no condition negotiable with anyone or any country, period”, it said.

In Tehran, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Abbas Mousavi tweeted late on Tuesday that Zarif ’s comments meant to challenge Washington, and “threw the ball into the US court while challenging Amer-

ica’s arms sales” to its Middle Eastern allies.

Zarif also backpedalled on the missiles issue, saying Iran has no choice but to manufacture the missiles for its own defence.

Trudeau meets with Surrey parents to discuss Canada Child Benefit Trudeau was meeting with about half a dozen parents to discuss the Canada Child Benefit at the Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex in Fleetwood.

He said it was “an opportunity to chat” with the parents on some of the challenges they’re facing as parents and “pressures” that families are under.

“We know the cost of living is always a challenge,” said Trudeau, highlighting the costs of activities while children are off school during the summer.

The Canada Child Benefit was intro-

duced in 2015. “Because it was working so well, we actually indexed it to the cost of living,” he said. “So in about a week, the monthly amount you are all getting to support your kids, will be going up to match the cost of living.” Trudeau said “every year, we are indexing it.” The media wasn’t able to ask questions and couldn’t stay for the discussion.

“The Sahwa challenged the idea that there should be obedience to the ruler, introducing ideas that were not welcome in the Wahhabi quarters,” he said.

How did the movement rise to prominence?

Although the Saudi state eventually cracked down on Sahwa movements, the government was instrumental in their growth until the 1990s, say experts.

This was not only true with regards to the movements’ social and educational activities but also their political undertakings.

“Sahwa’s political activity during the 1980s was strongly supported and encouraged by the state. The state was actually the leader of the Sahwa at the time, particularly when it comes to the Afghan jihad,” Professor Said told Al Jazeera.

According to al-Faqih, Sahwa’s rise in the 1980s can be traced to three pivotal events: the seizure of the holy mosque in Mecca by a hardline group, the Iranian Revolution, and the Afghan War. In 1979, a former army corporal, Juhayman al-Otaybi, took control of the Grand Mosque in Mecca at a time when Saudi Arabia was trying to push through plans for social reforms.

“The incident was a big lesson for the state.

It forced it to reign in its Westernisation project [in an attempt to appease Saudi Islamists],” said al-Faqih.

That same year, the Iranian Revolution posed another challenge. To push back Iranian influence, the kingdom sponsored “Islamist” activities among the Sahwa movements to propagate an image of a benevolent Saudi monarchy, said al-Faqih.

“The success of the Iranian revolution forced the Saudi regime to try to prove itself as a better Sunni example after Khomeini sold

Islam as a successful way of ridding Muslim countries of tyrants,” said al-Faqih.

The third factor was Saudi Arabia’s decision to support Afghan fighters against the Soviet invasion, a position taken by its ally, the United States.

Analysts have said that Saudi Arabia supported Sahwa movements to persuade thousands of Saudis to either finance or fight alongside the mujahidin in Afghanistan.

“For a decade, Saudis were engrossed in the Afghan War and encouraged to support the mujahidin financially,” said Professor Said.

“Thousands of Saudis joined the fight and the state didn’t try to stop them. Instead, leaders of the jihad were welcomed in Riyadh.”

What is the Sahwa’s relationship with the state?

The relationship between the Sahwa and the state has been through several stages.

The first phase of state sponsorship and support ended with the Gulf War, which saw Riyadh allow US troops to deploy on Saudi soil.

The move provoked an angry response and coincided with calls for political reform, led

by Sahwa figures such as Salman al-Awdah and Safar al-Hawali.

“The 1990s saw the initiation of the first mature political step by Sahwa with the publication of 12 demands in a letter to the state,” said al-Faqih.

“When my father was released, his audience and following grew in Saudi Arabia and beyond. During that phase, he helped the state a lot in their fight against extremism. He propagated a moderate Islam and worked to fight extremism by engaging the people.”

\The demands, which included power-sharing, reforming the justice system and fighting corruption, were then detailed in a 44page memorandum a year later, he said.

The state responded by cracking down on the Sahwa movements and imprisoning hundreds of Sahwa activists and several of its leaders, including al-Awdah and al-Hawali in 1994.

When they were released in the late 1990s, a phase of rapprochement began as the state relied on the likes of al-Awdah to fight “extremism”, especially following the events of 9/11.

“When my father was released, his audience and following grew in Saudi Arabia and beyond,” Abdullah Alaoudh, a post-doctoral fellow at Georgetown University, told Al Jazeera.

“During that phase, he [Salman al-Awdah] helped the state a lot in their fight against extremism. He propagated a moderate Islam and worked to fight extremism by engaging the people.”

But the relationship soured once again following the Arab Spring of 2011, as dozens of Sahwa figures - including al-Awdah - supported the revolutions, with some calling for swift reforms in the kingdom.

Why did MBS detain prominent Sahwa figures?

Fearing that the revolutionary tide would reach the kingdom, Saudi Arabia attempted to crush dissent.

After MBS became crown prince, he intensified repression against a wide range of potential opponents including Saudi Islamists, especially those affiliated with the Sahwa.

“MBS doesn’t like competition and people who aren’t under his control. He is afraid of any opposition and believes these people [Sahwa activists] will overthrow his regime,”

explained Saudi analyst al-Ahmed.

Alaoudh said: “MBS decided to remove independent voices that can ask for real change and demand basic liberties while also presenting a discourse that has religious authority and legitimacy.”

What is the Sahwa’s future?

According to al-Ahmed, the latest crackdown of the state on Sahwa leaders may see a complete separation between the two for good.

“If the Sahwa is given its freedom again, it has the potential for becoming more powerful than the government because it responds to and addresses issues that impact society.

“But the relationship between the two has reached final divorce as MBS is unlikely to go back on his approach,” said al-Ahmed, warning that the execution of al-Awdah and others could lead to society losing faith in the state.

Despite the clampdown, however, Professor Said believes that the Sahwa will survive.

“MBS’s current crackdown on Sahwa will fail. Ideas cannot be suppressed,” he said.

“When the time is right, these people will reemerge and express themselves once again.”

Usa, Canada, nato Pew findings reveal largest increase in social hostilities towards religion in more than 10 years occurred in Europe.

Religious restrictions are on the rise across the globe amid increasing violence and harassment of those practising, a recent report from the Pew Research Center found.

The number of restrictions imposed on religion has risen since 2007 in both authoritarian countries as well as liberal democracies in Europe, the report said on Monday.

It underlined that cases of harassment against Christians emerged in 143 countries in 2017, while Muslims were harassed in 140 nations. The hostilities include violence and harassment by private individuals and groups, the report said.

According to the report, 52 governments - including China, Indonesia and Russia impose either “high” or “very high” levels of restrictions on religion, up from 40 states in 2007. Countries with the lowest levels of religious restrictions were South Africa, Japan, the Philippines, Brazil and South Korea.

Pressurised conversions

Since 2007, the largest increases in hostility towards religion occurred in Europe and the Middle East-North Africa region, according to the report.

In Europe, the number of countries reportedly exhibiting religious hostility rose from 21 to 33 by 2017.

The report said in Europe, 20 countries placed restrictions on religious dress, including face veils used by some Muslim women, up from only five in 2007.

In Germany, the report said thousands of refugees were pressured to convert to Christianity using the threat of deportation, while “incentivizing them by offering accelerated baptism, free lunch and transportation costs”. In Asia, Pew highlighted the harassment of hundreds of thousands of Uighur Muslims in China, who have been sent to so-called “re-education camps”, as well as in Myanmar, where hundreds of thousands of mostly Muslim Rohingya were forced to flee their homes after a bloody crackdown by the military.

The Rohingya are described by the UN as the world’s most persecuted people. The UN last month accused the Myanmar government of practising a “policy of apartheid”.

According to Amnesty International, more than 750,000 Rohingya refugees, mostly women and children, have fled Myanmar and crossed into Bangladesh.

England win Cricket World Cup after Super Over drama

Eoin Morgan’s side finished on 241 all out in pursuit of New Zealand’s 241-8 • Both sides finished Super Over on 15 so England won due to a tie-break rule because they hit more boundaries LONDON: England won the World Cup for the first time ever on Sunday, holding their nerve to seal a thrilling Super Over victory against New Zealand after the final ended in a tie.

Eoin Morgan’s side finished on 241 all out in pursuit of New Zealand’s 241-8, sending the match at Lord’s to a six-ball shootout for each side.

England’s Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler took 15 off Trent Boult’s over before Jofra Archer stepped up to bowl against Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham.

With two runs required off the final ball, wicketkeeper Jos Buttler and Jason Roy combined to run out Guptill as he came back for the second.

That meant the host nation won on superior boundary count, sparking wild scenes of celebration at the “home of cricket.”

England, who have often cited a humiliating defeat by New Zealand at the 2015 World Cup as the catalyst for their climb to the top of the one-day international rankings, finally have a World Cup win to go with their three losing appearances in the 1979, 1987 and 1992 finals.

“Absolutely unbelievable, I still can’t quite

believe it,” said Morgan. “A packed house at Lord’s — the support has been incredible from the very beginning of the tournament and we’ve managed to pull it off. It’s such a good feeling.”

“This has been a four-year journey, we have developed a lot,” he added. “We find it hard to play on wickets like that and today was about getting over the line. Sport is tough at times.”

The win comes four years after an embarrassing first-round exit at the 2015 World Cup and England were forced to dig deep during this tournament after three defeats in the group stages left them on the brink of elimination.

By contrast, defeat is devastating for New Zealand, who were also looking to win the trophy for the first time after being well beaten by Australia in the 2015 showpiece.

Ben Stokes, with 84 not out, had so nearly seen England to victory in regulation play but that ended with the scores level.

England were in deep trouble at 86-4 but Stokes and Buttler (59) shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 110.

Just when it seemed they would see England home, Buttler sliced fast bowler Lockie Ferguson to substitute fielder Tim Southee at deep point.

Ferguson then made it two wickets in three balls when Chris Woakes skied a catch to wicketkeeper Tom Latham, with England

now 203-6 in the 47th over.

Needing 15 off the last over to win, Stokes was unable to score off the first two balls but lofted the third for six over long-on.

Then, with Stokes desperately completing a second run, his bat was struck by Guptill’s throw from the deep and the ball ricocheted for four more.

England got the target down to two from one ball but they could only manage a single, with last man Mark Wood run out, before the drama of the Super Over.

A man-of-the-match performance was redemption for Stokes after a 2017 street brawl threatened to ruin his career and he wept openly during the jubilant on-field celebrations.

“I’m pretty lost for words. All that hard work

for four years and now to be stood here as champions of the world, it’s an amazing feeling,” Stokes said.

Earlier, fast bowler Liam Plunkett dismissed New Zealand captain and star batsman Kane Williamson for just 30 before removing established opener Henry Nicholls for an innings-best 55 in a return of 3-42 from his 10 overs.

Tom Latham hit 47 to help New Zealand to a total that agonizingly almost proved enough on a challenging wicket for batting.

“We have showed heart and fight to get to this stage and a tie in the final — it wasn’t meant to be,” said Williamson.

“The guys are shattered. It’s devastating.

GWANGJU, Korea, Republic Of -- Diver Jennifer Abel has set a Canadian record with her ninth career medal at the world aquatics championships.

The native of Laval, Que., teamed with Melissa Citrini-Beaulieu of Saint-Constant, Que., to win silver in the women’s three-metre synchronized event on Monday.

Abel, 27, was tied for most medals won by a Canadian with diver Alex Despatie and swimmer Ryan Cochrane heading into the event.

China’s Wang Han and Shi Tingmao won gold with 342 points, while the Canadians came second with 311.10.

Mexico’s Paola Spinosa Sanchez and Melany Hernandez Torres took bronze with 294.90 points. It was Canada’s second medal of the world aquatics championships after Eric Hedlin of Victoria won bronze in the 5-km open swim on Saturday.

Later Monday, Canada’s Vincent Riendeau and Nathan ZsomborMurray came 11th in the men’s 10-metre synchronized diving event.

Canada just missed the podium in the women’s team highlight artistic swim event on Monday, finishing fourth.

Ahmad Saleem hasn’t been able to sleep in his bed since he lost his wife.

Ayesha Riaz died three days after giving birth to their son, Eesa, on Feb. 7, at Markham Stouffville Hospital in southern Ontario.

Riaz, who was a healthy 24-year-old, had a hospital-acquired aggressive group A streptococcus (GAS) bacterial infection, ultimately leading to her death on Feb. 10, according to an audio recording shared with Global News. Saleem was told his wife went into septic shock.

“It’s my whole life taken away in a few moments,” Saleem, 26, tells Global News. “I look at my son and it’s hard because he doesn’t know what he missed. We just started out life, never could’ve expected to do this on my own… I hold him, love him, I play around with him, but it hurts me every second.”

Saleem, who was by his wife’s side throughout her symptoms and procedures, says he even performed CPR in those final few moments.

“It felt like eternity,” he says. “Every second that went by I am crying. Eventually at some point they pull me and said, ‘she’s not coming back.’”

Saleem is left with a four-week-old baby and unanswered questions as to where his wife picked up the bacterial infection. He also alleges some of his wife’s symptoms — before she was put in the hospital’s intensive care unit — were “dismissed” or “ignored.”

Markham Stouffville Hospital says they are unable to comment on these allegations due to patient confidentiality.

Global News has also learned Markham Stouffville Hospital took “disciplinary measures,” after two health-care workers involved in Riaz’s care were involved in a privacy breach following a routine audit.

The family is currently looking into their legal options.

Following an indication of a group A strep case on the patient care unit, Lisa Joyce, vicepresident of communications and affairs at Markham Stouffville, says the hospital instituted “enhanced cleaning measures and restricted visitors to the patient care unit.”

“We also proactively notified patients who would be coming to the unit about the increase in infections and the restrictions we had put in place,” she tells Global News.

Joyce says there was only one confirmed case of hospital-acquired strep A in February, and Markham Stouffville has previously

never had a hospital-acquired case of the bacteria on their childbirth unit.

She adds the hospital is currently working to examine the “root cause” of the incident to prevent another case.

The hospital is also working with the Regional Municipality of York’s public health department, who confirmed three cases of Group A strep infections at the hospital this year, including Riaz’s.

Dr. Karim Kurji, medical officer of health at York Region, tells Global News in the last seven years, there have been 37 individuals who have died from group A strep infections in the region.

“She was the most open-minded, sincere and honest and charismatic person you could meet. This is not something I am saying because I’m her husband, this is something whoever interacted with her can tell you,” Saleem says.

The first-time mom was the youngest of five children and a 2016 graduate of the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. She and her husband had a religious marriage in 2013 and a ceremonial one in August 2016.

The two were young lovers who enjoyed travelling across Europe and in the last year, both started preparing for parenthood.

“She talked to the baby during the pregnancy … and [we both] wrote to the baby,” Saleem says.

In their bedroom, Riaz filled drawers with infant shoes, clothes and other newborn essentials. She had a large pink calendar marked with upcoming doctors’ appointments and ordered all kinds of gadgets for her son before he was born.

Saleem says when it came to being a new mom, she wanted to focus on his upbringing. “[She would say], ‘I’m going to make my son a feminist.’ She really wanted our son to display those qualities where he would respect men and women.”

But Riaz won’t be able to see her son grow up.

After she gave birth on the morning of Feb. 7, Saleem says she was completely fine with some complaints of back pain. She was feeding, changing and interacting with her newborn son.

Saleem says his wife started to feel dizzy and light-headed after the couple was moved into a private room in the hospital’s postpartum ward, around 2 a.m. on Feb. 8. Getting in touch with a nurse and doing an initial electrocardiogram test, Saleem says he was told his wife’s heart rate was “a little high.”

“I told my wife don’t worry [and the nurses said] the doctor will be here in the morning.

She was a little tense but she said OK.” That night he claims nurses were called into the room multiple times. Sometimes it was to help with feeding, other times it was to ask for new bed sheets. The next morning, while Saleem, an articling lawyer in downtown Toronto, was wrapping up at his office, he says his mom informed him Riaz was experiencing shortness of breath.

The child who loves drawing and painting knows that he or she can study and promote their career in arts. Today’s modern and advance life of technology, has opened many doors of work and courses. Iphones or iPads have opened up more avenues to reach one’s advertisements from one’s pocket.

School Days There are lots of activities available for students apart from studies. All Children should take part in different hobbies and volunteer

work. This helps them build themselves and know about their interests in life.

The Big Question Which career to select after finishing high school and inspite of dozens of paths available – the funding for them is equally challenging. This is something the generation before us didn’t have. The parents also need to have their own hobbies or career instead of relying on others all the time. In school, most of the time, there is pressure of good marks and not on other interests of other fields. When time comes to select a path after graduation, the students are left in a cloud of confusion.

One has to start planning their academic career early on and develop skills for it. This cannot happen unless the school boards assist the students. One shouldn’t always look at careers with a lot of money. One’s contentment is more important than money.

“My mom and her mom continuously went to the nurses’ station and called them over and over again to the point where they became frustrated,” he says.

Clinical notes provided by the family from the hospital show Riaz’s first complaint was recorded Feb. 9.

On Feb. 9, the couple was visited by a doctor who ordered a blood culture test. Saleem says his wife was short of breath, tired and bloated, walking up to the nurses’ station and asking for pain relief. At this point, Saleem and both families were concerned about Riaz’s symptoms and even consulted with family friends who were doctors in the U.S. On Feb. 10, Saleem got a phone call around 3 a.m. from his mother. She told him that Riaz had developed a fever and was on antibiotics. He got onto the phone with his wife.

“She said my body feels very stiff, I can’t get out of bed [and] I feel very weak.” But Riaz still assured him she was going to be OK and advised him to come see her in the morning.

By the next morning, her fever had gotten worse, and Saleem claims it took hours for Riaz to see a doctor.

“I laid next to her and she was burning hot … [I was] calming her down like rubbing her skin and everything, that’s when the doctor came in.”

The doctor suggested to move Riaz into the ICU and at this point, she was awake and alert. “She was talking to me, everything was fine. She’s asking about the baby, who is with him … that’s her only concern.”

After entering the ICU around 1 p.m., Riaz’s health eventually worsened. She was heavily sedated, on multiple antibiotics, but unfortunately, none of them was helping with her infection.

“Two minutes before she became unresponsive, she was like, ‘I love you.’ I kissed her [and] she kissed me.”

Saleem says at this point his family was told doctors were treating her infection like it was group A strep. After there was no response to any medication or procedures, staff began doing CPR. This is when he also stepped in.

“For me, it is haunting every single day,” he says. “It leads back to you had three days of her complaining.”

Ahmad Riaz, Ayesha’s father, also tells Global News he saw his son-in-law doing CPR on his daughter through a glass window.

In regards to Saleem’s allegations and Riaz’s case, Markham Stouffville Hospital tells Global News they cannot comment on any specific patient or their care.

Riaz was pronounced dead at 4:33 p.m.

Group A streptococcus postpartum Dr. Isaac Bogoch, a clinical researcher at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, who was not involved in Riaz’s care, says group A strep is a bacterial infection that has the potential to cause severe disease.

He adds the majority of people with GAS infections get sore throats or small skin infections, and septic shock can happen, but it is rare.

“The other thing we have to remember is, even if you get group A streptococcus, it doesn’t mean you’re going to get an infection,” he tells Global News. “Some people are what we say colonized with the bacteria, that just means the bacteria is on the person but not causing an infection — it is not causing any disease.”

When it does become severe, it can turn into sepsis, resulting in the infection entering the blood, eventually causing organ failure or septic shock.

When the bacteria become aggressive or invasive, they can breach normal skin barriers, he says, often getting into the blood and causing an inflammatory response in the body. “[The person] has difficulty pumping blood to all their vital organs.”

Bogoch adds you can get infected with group A strep from direct contact with something or someone. It can spread if someone doesn’t wash their hands or if medical tools are not sanitized.

“It can get into the nose and mouth area or if someone has skin that’s cut.”

Someone postpartum could pick up the bacteria the same way, although it is “tough to know” why postpartum women, in particular, are at higher risk. Boguch says.

And in terms of prevention, Bogoch says it comes down to impeccable hand hygiene.

Remembering Ayesha Riaz’s best friend, Ferozan Nasiri, tells Global News via email Riaz loved writing, reading and painting. For Saleem’s birthday, she hand-wrote 52 tiny messages of reasons why she loved him and while she was at school, she presented essays at academic conferences.

Volunteering at Sunnybrook Hospital in 2016, Nasiri says her best friend eventually wanted to work in health care. She was loved by everyone around her and treated friends like family members.

“She’d become a kid with kids, an adult with adults, she could have a conversation with anyone, any age, any group and easily fit in,” Nasir says.

A GoFundMe page was set up by the family to help cover upcoming legal costs, but Saleem says he wants to raise awareness in his wife’s honour to ensure families are aware that this can happen to someone young and healthy.

“Our parents leave our supposed third world country to come to a better health-care system … We’re not in an age where a 24-yearold woman [can] die after giving birth. These things just disturb me,” he says.

And as he grieves, he says closure can come from getting answers, as well as making a change.

“To know that I or even if Ayesha could make a difference in somebody else’s life because somebody was more aware, that is satisfaction to me. Nothing I do can bring her back, but saving somebody else or someone else being aware of this would give me a lot of peace.” info: arti.patel@globalnews.ca

Dream With Open Eyes It is good to have dreams and aims in life but if it is left at that then one cannot make it a reality. It is just a fantasy. What have we done to achieve the dream? Life is full of difficulties but our efforts will convert into profitable actions for us.

Before this, we at the very least, need to know what we want to begin with. Once we know that, we can find avenues to navigate towards our goal(s). But if we do not plan properly we don’t know which direction we are heading towards. And thus, a life will be wasted. This will be a big loss and injustice we do to ourselves.

Our dreams are not impossible. They are realistic and therefore hurdles will be there but that’s what life is. One navigates through –

always.

Allah has given us many blessings and it is time we appreciate and utilize them.

When their future is bright, their children have a better future and avoid mistakes they made. It is never about one generation but many generations as examples are set early on. Reality check: Can air conditioning make you sick?

Summer heat is at its peak, which means you probably have the air conditioner on at full blast.

You’re not alone. According to the International Energy Agency, the use of cooling fans and air conditioners accounts for around 10 per cent of all global electricity consumption. Nearly 90 per cent of U.S. citizens have a unit in their home.

Air-conditioning units help protect small children, the elderly and pets from the effects of extreme heat — but some doctors are worried that they can also cause health issues.

“They do have benefits in terms of [protecting us from] air pollution and particularly in times of heat waves, but they’re not without risk,” said Dr. Farah Shroff. Shroff is a public health researcher and professor at the University of British Columbia.

“The main concern with indoor air conditioning systems is that they need to be well maintained to reduce the risk of microbial contamination,” which is defined as the accidental introduction of microbes such as bacteria, yeast, mould and fungi.

Shroff said AC units should be checked regularly by an expert technician to avoid the buildup of stagnant water, as this can lead to mould and other dangerous microbes.

“It can actually circulate [viruses, bacteria and fungi] more,” she said. “Somebody who already has a respiratory disease or some kind of compromised immune system will experience worse [symptoms].”

Signs and symptoms

Microbes from stagnant water in your air conditioner can cause a wide array of uncomfortable symptoms.

Dry or irritated eyes, as well as a dry mouth, throat or nasal passages, are common.

“Headaches, sore throat or [losing] your voice” is also possible,” according to Shroff.

“If the building’s systems aren’t maintained properly, you can get a buildup of bacterial pathogens which can cause illnesses such as Legionnaires’ disease (a severe form of pneumonia) or Pontiac fever,” said Tadiboyina. “[Bacterial pathogens] can also cause a runny nose, sore throat and allergic reactions.”

The problem, said Tadiboyina, is that these symptoms are caused by several different illnesses, making it tricky for doctors to say definitively whether your air conditioner is the issue.

“Oftentimes, when [patients] come in with respiratory symptoms [such as] fever, fatigue, coughing, wheezing… these kinds of things are non-specific symptoms,” he said.

Fortunately, the more severe illnesses — like Legionnaires’ disease — are identifiable with further testing.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should see a doctor.

‘Sick Building Syndrome’ A study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology in 2004 found that people who worked in air-conditioned office buildings were more likely to become sick than those who worked in buildings without central air.

Researchers, who compared buildings with air conditioning to buildings with natural ventilation, referred to this phenomenon at “Sick Building Syndrome” (SBS).

Lead researcher Dr. Mark J. Mendell said one possible explanation for the increase in illness is “the moisture in AC and humidification systems.” Mendell feared that moisture can result in “in microbiological exposures that cause health effects through mechanisms that are irritant, toxic or allergic.”

Little research has been done on SBS, but Shroff — who isn’t an expert on the condition — said a poorly maintained AC unit in a large building could cause issues for the people who live or work there.

“If the air conditioning is not well-maintained… a large number of people in that building could be impacted,” she said. “It’s not just our air conditioning. It’s a syndrome that has been shown to cause health problems related to air quality.”

Shroff clarifies that natural ventilation would only be better than air conditioning if pollution levels were low. “It really depends on what’s going on with outside air,” she said.

In extreme heat, AC offers more benefits than pitfalls Both Tadiboyina and Shroff believe the benefits of air conditioning outweigh the risks — especially during periods of extreme heat.

“Extreme heat is very dangerous,” said Tadiboyina. “It may not be as dangerous for young, healthy people… but there is a subset of the population that is very susceptible to heat.”

Tadiboyina said people with cardiovascular disease, physical disability and those who have previously had a stroke are at a higher risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Extreme heat is also more dangerous for people who abuse alcohol, cocaine or other stimulants, as well as anyone who takes beta blockers, diuretics or cold medication on a regular basis. “Air conditioning can offset this risk,” he said.

Another 2011 study from Yale University supported Tadiboyina’s claims. In it, researchers found that the use of air conditioning lowered the risk of hospitalization and death from cardiovascular disease and other issues in people age 65 and older.

Shroff believes access to air conditioning

during extreme heat is a matter of equality.

“When people are dying from heat stroke, the benefits [of air conditioning] outweigh the negative aspects,” she said. “We need to make sure that everyone has access to it.”

What you need to know about carbon monoxide poisoning?

A Winnipeg hotel carbon monoxide leak sent 46 people to hospital on Tuesday, with 15 described as being in critical condition.

The Super 8 Motel was evacuated of 52 guests and staff on Tuesday morning. Five people were taken to hospital in unstable condition, while 26 were described as stable.

Here is a primer on carbon monoxide poisoning and how to protect yourself.

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide — or CO — is a colourless gas with no taste or odour.

It is generated from burning fuel such as wood, oil, natural gas, coal, propane, or gasoline. The risk of CO poisoning is higher in the winter, and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs also warns that carbon monoxide threats are present in almost 90 per cent of all homes. It is frequently referred to as a silent or invisible killer.

How many people does carbon monoxide kill?

According to the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, carbon monoxide poisoning claims the lives of more than 50 people each year in Canada. Hundreds more are sent to hospital each year, resulting in some form of permanent disability.

New York State’s Department of Health describes carbon monoxide poisoning as the “leading cause of death due to poisoning in the United States.”

What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning?

Breathing in carbon monoxide results in your body carrying less oxygen in your blood. Health Canada states online that CO poisoning can “cause health problems before you even notice that it’s present.”

At low levels, a person can experience headaches, shortness of breath, tiredness, muscle weakness, and loss of function in a body part such as a limb.

High levels of CO exposure — or even low levels of exposure over a long period of time — can cause impaired vision, chest pain, dizziness, and trouble formulating thoughts.

Winnipeg’s Fire Paramedic Chief John Lane told Global News that no one from this particular incident required intubation or resuscitation.

Very high levels of exposure can cause seizures, coma, or death.

How much CO is too much CO? According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the effects of CO depend on the concentration, length of exposure and an individual’s health.

The concentration of CO in the air is measured in parts per million (ppm).

While most people will not experience any symptoms from prolonged exposure to CO levels between 1 and 70 ppm, some heart patients may experience an increase in chest pain.

The CPSC says as CO levels increase and remain above 70 ppm, symptoms become more noticeable and can include headache, fatigue and nausea.

According to the CPSC, a sustained CO concentration above 150 ppm may cause disorientation, unconsciousness and death.

The effects of carbon monoxide on pets Carbon monoxide exposure also poses a significant danger for pets.

According to Dr. Gina Bowen, director of veterinary services at the Winnipeg Humane Society, CO affects animals the same

“The problem with animals or pets is that they spend more time in the home than people do, and so if there’s a carbon monoxide leak in the home they are often being exposed to it for longer periods of time than people are,” she said.

Additionally, Bowen says because pets are lower to the ground where CO accumulates, they may experience adverse effects before humans.

Bowen says if your dog looks weak, is staggering or collapses, it may be a warning sign.

With cats, owners may notice their pet is looking lethargic, wobbly or may begin to pant.

Bowen says if you think your pet may be suffering from CO poisoning, you should get them into the fresh air immediately.

She says emergency personnel will provide the animal with oxygen, and may administer fluids for shock by I.V. “But there is no medicine that you can give that’s an antidote for carbon monoxide poisoning,” she said. “It’s just supporting the pet and trying to give them as much oxygen as they can so that their hemoglobin can do what it needs to do and then waiting for the effects of the carbon monoxide gas to wear off.

What can people do to protect themselves?

Health Canada says every home should have at least one carbon monoxide alarm and a smoke alarm. Smoke alarms can only warn homeowners about fire and not the presence of CO, so it is important to install both.

Carbon monoxide alarms can be bought at most hardware stores. Test them regularly and keep an eye on when they should be replaced by noting the installation date on the alarm.

If your CO alarm alerts you to a leak, Health Canada recommends the following: Do not try to find the source of the leak Evacuate the home immediately, and seek fresh air Call 9-1-1 once you’re outside Only re-enter your home once a professional has fixed the issue.

How can people prevent carbon monoxide leaks?

Health Canada says homeowners should regularly maintain fuel-burning appliances and should have a professional regularly inspect appliances such as fireplaces, furnaces, gas stoves, and water heaters.

The health agency also recommends examining appliances that use propane and natural gas, such as stoves, heaters, and fridges.

Check for leaks, cracks, tears, breaks or corrosion in tubes, blocked vents, and faulty connections to gas lines.
