A toxic Twitter war

S PRESIDENT Donald Trump’s latest salvo against Pakistan is yet another reminder that the two countries’ already uneasy relationship is getting nastier. It was not the first time that the president launched an outrageous broadside but the response from a Pakistani leader has never been so candid. The war of tweets threatens to completely derail a faltering association.

Intriguingly, the Trumpian invective came at a time when it seemed that the two estranged allies could still work together for a negotiated political solution to the Afghan crisis. A series of recent senior-level interactions had raised hopes that the rocky relationship could be stabilised. The latest spat has made it more difficult to maintain even the illusion of meaningful alignment.

It was certainly not a spontaneous bout of rage that drove an impulsive US president to make such humiliating remarks; it was a well-thought-out move to increase the pressure on Islamabad. The first volley of words came during an interview with Fox News, when out of nowhere Trump blasted Pakistan for not doing a “damn thing” for the United States, despite receiving billions of dollars in aid.

The latest Pakistan-US spat has made it difficult to maintain even the illusion of meaningful alignment.

He taunted Pakistan for sheltering Osama bin Laden and insinuated that the latter’s presence in a high-security zone was known to Pakistani officials. One wonders why this issue has been raised now, while forgetting that it was as much a failure of US intelligence that the most-wanted terrorist leader managed to es-

cape from Afghanistan despite the presence of American forces there. Moreover, there is no acknowledgement by the American president of Pakistan’s role in destroying the Al Qaeda infrastructure in the region. Pakistan may be blamed for not taking action against some militants operating from its soil, but holding it responsible for the US military debacle in Afghanistan is extremely unfair.

Surely, it was not the first time that a US official alleged that Pakistan was playing a double game; however, Trump’s tenor is becoming increasingly strident. He was equally harsh in his New Year tweet in which he accused Pakistan of lying and being deceitful. The hostility had seemed to lessen a bit in the past months. That, perhaps, prompted our foreign minister to claim that the US was willing to reset ties with Pakistan. One wonders what caused Shah Mehmood Qureshi to believe that the Trump administration could change tack. The latest episode has shattered the myth that relations were getting back on track.

The tough response from the Pakistani prime minister did not come as a surprise. Imran Khan has been known for his strong views on Pakistan’s post-9/11 alliance with the US and his fiery anti-American rhetoric. Yet one cannot agree more with the prime minister that the US needed to examine the reasons for its failure in Afghanistan. “Instead of making Pakistan a scapegoat for their failures, the US should do a serious assessment of why, despite 140,000 Nato troops plus 250,000 Afghan troops and reportedly $1 trillion spent on war in Afghanistan, the Taliban today are stronger than before,” Imran Khan said in a tweet. He further

noted that Pakistan had borne the brunt of the American-led war on terror.

Trump, perhaps, did not expect such a lashing from Pakistan’s prime minister and his tenor got harsher in a spate of Twitter replies. The message was clear: the US would further toughen its stance towards Pakistan. Almost all US military aid has been stopped and only a trickle of civilian aid is now coming to Pakistan.

Trump’s South Asia policy has brought Pakistan-US ties to a new low. It is even worse than what it was in the 1990s when Pakistan was under all kinds of US sanctions. The interaction between the two countries has been reduced to a low official level though military-to-military contacts may still have survived.

While the illusion of any strategic convergence has been absent for long, even a transactional relationship is now hard to maintain. It is apparent that Islamabad is no more dependent on US aid, and the latest American measures are not likely to force it to comply with the US demand, though Islamabad would need to take some action in its own interest against the militant groups allegedly operating from its soil.

The recent hostility is unprecedented. Trump’s demand for unquestionable compliance is unacceptable to Pakistan. The US policy of using pressure tactics to bring Pakistan to its knees has not worked, and the latest Twitter war between the two leaders would have further widened the trust deficit. However, there is still some convergence of interest between the two countries with regard to Afghanistan. That minimises the option of a complete rupture in ties.

the ante at a time when his administration is engaged in direct talks with the Afghan Taliban.

The US authorities acknowledge that the role of Pakistan would be extremely critical in any Afghan peace process. Pakistan has long advocated a negotiated settlement for Afghanistan and has shown willingness to cooperate in the effort. Last month, Islamabad released a number of highlevel Taliban prisoners, including the movement’s co-founder, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. These prisoner releases are widely seen as a US-directed move aimed at encouraging the Taliban to participate in the talks.

The US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has already held two rounds of talks with the Afghan Taliban representatives in Doha.

After three-day-long parleys at the Taliban political office last week, Khalilzad appeared cautiously optimistic about reaching a peace agreement with the Afghan insurgents by April next year. “I am talking to all interested parties, all Afghan groups ... and I think there is an opportunity for reconciliation and peace,” he told a news conference in Kabul. Such optimism may be premature, but any breakthrough in the talks should be welcomed by Pakistan.

Notwithstanding these tensions, there is still some convergence of interest between the two estranged allies when it comes to ending the war in Afghanistan.

But Trump’s war of words will not help the two sides work together.

Open letter to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan

Declassifying Confiscated Historic Documents of Allama Mashriqi and the Khaksar Tehrik.

Dear Prime Minister Imran Khan, As-salamu alaykum. I hope you are doing well and congratulations on assuming office as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan after a long struggle. The nation’s hopes are high for the Naya Pakistan you have promised, and I hope that people will finally see change in Pakistan. I am writing today to urge your action on an important topic that I believe is crucial to helping Pakistan learn from its past and move towards a new future.

Since its inception, Pakistan has struggled to establish itself – both domestically and on the world stage. Pakistani political leaders and persons in power in the country have exploited and destroyed the nation, while themselves living

in luxury and comfort. In order to change its destiny, Pakistan needs to follow the example of noble and selfless leaders like Allama Inayatullah Khan Al-Mashriqi (Founder of the Khaksar Tehrik). Mashriqi, who was my grandfather, was one of the most educated and accomplished leaders of his time. His book Tazkirah was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1925 and he subsequently successfully mobilized millions of people to fight for freedom, until British rule came to an end in the Indian sub-continent (now Pakistan, India, Bangladesh) in 1947. Mashriqi’s hallmark was a selfless leadership that served the masses; he promoted brotherhood and rejected corruption in all forms. I have personally been conducting in-depth research on Mashriqi since 1996 in order to apprise the nation of his contributions and inspire others to learn from him.

Despite all of Mashriqi’s contributions to the nation and his major role in obtaining freedom from the British Raj, Mashriqi has unfortunately been victimized in Pakistan because he disagreed with

the founders and was opposed to the partition of India; as a consequence, Mashriqi’s accomplishments and works have been buried.

It is time for Pakistan to rise above the colonial mindset, whereby only those leaders who the British considered champions of freedom, are highlighted. In a healthy democracy, political leaders should be encouraged to share opposing views and engage in vigorous debate. Why then should Mashriqi be victimized or suppressed simply because he voiced opposition to the division of India? He was simply advocating for what he felt was best for the people. Indeed, Pakistanis should be able to study Mashriqi’s thoughts and ideas to understand why he opposed partition and decide for themselves whether his point of view was valid or not. This type of debate and analytical thinking will help the nation to develop mature minds and a tolerant culture, both of which are important for the country’s future growth.

As I am sure you will agree, censoring history does an incredible disservice to Pakistan, its people, and the nation’s ability to learn

from the past. It is time to bring an end to orthodoxy and the statusquo and usher in a Naya Pakistan in all spheres of life. I request that you issue an order to declassify the documents related to Allama Mashriqi and the Khaksar Tehrik, which were confiscated both before and after partition. I also urge the creation of a dedicated research institute to research Mashriqi, translate his works into English and other languages, and incorporate his contributions into the educational syllabus.

Taking the actions outlined above would send a powerful message to the world that Pakistan is a nation that encourages original thinking, freedom of speech, and open debate. Indeed, this would be a first step towards a new era of transparency and public discourse as the nation moves toward a Naya Pakistan.

I wish you all the best in changing the destiny of the people for the better.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has said Donald Trump needs to inform himself about historical facts after the US president alleged that Islamabad did not adequately support the Washington-led “war on terror”.

In a series of statements on Twitter on Monday, Khan listed ways in which Pakistan assisted the US and was impacted by the war, saying the “record needs to be put straight on Mr Trump’s tirade against Pakistan”.

The comments came a day after Trump defended his decision to cut hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid

lowing former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to hide in the South Asian country. Khan reacted sharply, recalling the Pakistani lives lost during the “war on terror”, before appearing to suggest the US should look closer to home for responsibility for the continued strength of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

“1. No Pakistani was involved in 9/11 but Pak[istan] decided to participate in US War on Terror. 2. Pakistan suffered 75,000 casualties in this war and over $123bn was lost to the economy. US “aid” was a minuscule $20bn,” Khan posted on Twitter.

Khan said the US has made Pakistan a “scapegoat” for its failures in Afghanistan, where the Taliban are stronger than at any point since the 2001 US-led invasion.

“Instead of making Pakistan a scapegoat for their failures, the US should do a serious assessment of why, despite 140,000 NATO troops plus 250,000 Afghan troops and reportedly $1 trillion spent on war in Afghanistan, the Taliban today are stronger than ever before.” Khan also highlighted how the war devastated Pakistan’s tribal areas and uprooted millions of Pakistanis from their homes. CJP heads to UK to raise funds for Diamer-Bhasha dam Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar will leave for the United Kingdom on Tuesday for a nine-day trip to raise funds for the Diamer-Bhasha dam, DawnNewsTV reported. CJP Nisar will attend three fundraising events in London that include galas at the Gray Inn Hall on Nov 21 — which is being co-hosted by legal firm 33 Bedford Row; the Royal Nawaab

PPP calls for overhaul of judicial system

ISLAMABAD: Expres­ sing concern over a ‘broken criminal justice system’ and an inordinate delay in the Benazir Bhutto murder case, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has called for an overhaul of the justice system involving creating a separate constitutional court in the country besides the Supreme Court, provision of appeal against decisions in all suo motu cases and a review of the procedure for appointment of superior court judges.

The demand was made by PPP Secretary General Farhatullah Babar and former attorney general for Pakistan Latif Khosa at a news conference at Zardari House here on Tuesday. Mr Khosa alleged that the judiciary had double standards in dealing terrorismrelated cases. On one hand, he said, the Supreme Court had stayed the Peshawar High Court’s order of releasing 76 people who had

been convicted by military courts on terrorism charges and on the other hand, the five accused of the Benazir Bhutto murder case had been set free despite the fact that they had made “judicial confessional statements” before a magistrate. He claimed that two of these five acquitted persons had received the suicide bombers from a bus stand and kept them at a house in Rawalpindi and their involvement had been proved through the DNA tests of the bombers carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the US. In September last year, an antiterrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi had acquitted five suspects allegedly linked with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for lack of evidence while announcing its verdict in the Benazir Bhutto murder case. The ATC, however, had convicted two

senior police officials Saud Aziz and Khurram Shehzad in the case for their failure to provide security to Ms Bhutto. The ATC judge had announced the judgement during in-camera proceedings at Adiala jail, declaring former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf a proclaimed offender in the case and ordering the attachment of his movable and immovable properties. The PPP leader said that former president Asif Zardari had filed an appeal against the ATC’s verdict, which was still pending. He said 11 years had passed since Ms Bhutto was assassinated outside Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi, but the

case was still unresolved. Mr Khosa, a lawyer by profession, criticised the authorities for not conducting a post-mortem on the slain leader. In response to allegations that her spouse had not allowed the authorities to conduct autopsy, he said no such permission from legal heirs was required. US senators accused President Donald Trump of putting “Saudi Arabia first” in his decision to not take punitive measures against the kingdom or Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump’s decision is “yet another fawning prostration to a foreign authoritarian”, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine tweeted on Tuesday.“It’s only a matter of time until actions like this one by the president directly threaten our security,” he added.

In a statement issued by the White House, Trump said the US intends to remain a “steadfast partner” of Saudi Arabia - even though “it could very well be” that Prince Mohammed had knowledge of Khashoggi’s killing. “We may never know all of the facts surrounding the murder of Mr. Jamal Khashoggi.

In any case, our relationship is with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Trump said.

He added he did not intend to cancel military deals with the kingdom, saying “if we foolishly cancel these contracts, Russia and China would be the enormous beneficiaries”.

Trump’s comments came despite pressure from US politicians who have called on the administration to do more to hold Saudi Arabia accountable. That pressure mounted following US media reports on Friday that said the CIA concluded Prince Mohammed,

also known as MBS, ordered Khashoggi’s murder. In his statement, Trump said it “could be very well that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event - maybe he did and maybe he didn’t!”

Later on Tuesday, the president added the CIA assessment of the intelligence surrounding the murder is not “definitive”.

Khashoggi, a contributing columnist for the Washington Post, was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 when he went there to pick up documents needed for his planned marriage.

A critic of the Saudi government, Khashoggi had resisted pressure from Riyadh for him to return home.

Saudi Arabia initially rejected its nationals were behind the killing, but as Turkish authorities continued to leak evidence of highlevel involvement, Riyadh eventually admitted its agents carried out the killing with a series of contradictory explanations.

Saudi Arabia’s deputy public prosecutor has said he was seeking the death penalty for five suspects charged in Khashoggi’s killing.

He told reporters the Saudi crown prince knew nothing of the operation, in which Khashoggi’s body was dismembered and removed from the consulate. The corpse has yet to be recovered.... ..............

The newly elected crop of Demcrat US House members are looking make an impact as soon as they arrive - by seeking to change the dress code rules to allow the wearing religious headwear, like hijabs, on the floor of the chamber.The so-called ‘hat ban’ has existed since the 1830s, when it was seen as a “harmless but indecorous” practice according to one member at the time.

However, the victory of Congresswomanelect Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who wears

a hijab, has decided that the rue is not fit for practice. Ms Omar wrote on Twitter and Instagram: “No one puts a scarf on my head but me. It’s my choice -- one protected by the first amendment”.She and Congresswomanelect Rashida Tlaib of Michigan are the first Muslim women to be elected to Congress.

Rules changes will be submitted in January by the new Congress to make an exception for members on religious grounds, but also for those wanting to wear a head covering if suffering from an illness.Nancy Pelosi, the current House minority leader and likely next Speaker of the House, said in a statement to NBC News: “Democrats know that our strength lies in our diversity, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or religion. After voters elected the most diverse Congress in history, clarifying the antiquated rule banning headwear will further show the remarkable progress we have made as a nation.While the majority of the US House identifies as Christian, religion has played an interesting role in conduct on the floor. It is up to the Speaker of the House to enforce the rules, but putting the exemption into the rules will make it harder for future Speakers to rescind the provision, whether on political grounds or otherwise.

Libyan authorities have used rubber bullets and tear gas to forcibly disembark more than 90 refugees and migrants who had refused to leave a cargo ship docked in the port of Misrata.The Panama-flagged ship rescued them off the Libyan coast 10 days ago, as their boat began sinking, and brought them to Misrata.

Once there, 14 disembarked willingly but, in the first documented case of its kind, the other 92 refused to leave.

“A joint force raided the cargo ship and used rubber bullets and tear gas to force [them off the ship],” the commander of the central region coastguards, Tawfiq Esskair, told the Reuters news agency by phone on Tuesday.

Some of those on board were wounded during disembarkation but were now “in good condition” after treatment in hospital, and all had been taken to a detention centre in the city, said Esskair.

During the 10-day standoff, the migrants pleaded to be taken to Europe, saying they

are prepared to die than be returned to detention in the North African country.

Two of those on board - Kai, 18, and Daniel, 16, both from South Sudan - told Al Jazeera earlier this week that it was too dangerous to go back to the centres, where they risk being abused and sold to people smugglers while having little hope of being evacuated.

The group was brought to Misrata on November 10, four days after setting sail in a rubber boat with the hope of reaching Italy.

Daniel said that the rubber boat had travelled almost 200km before the Panamanian-flagged cargo ship, The Nivin, crossed its path. Both Daniel and Kai said the crew on board The Nivin told them they would be taken to Italy, but instead brought them to Misrata. While many on board said they survived torture by human traffickers in Libya, others had stories about serious abuses in official detention centres.Al Jazeera has previously heard reports of deaths in detention centres run by the Libyan Department for Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM) which has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

Libya’s western coast has been a main departure point for refugees and migrants fleeing wars and poverty and hoping for new lives in Europe.

But since last year, heavy pressure from Italy - which had been bearing the brunt of arrivals - resulted in the disruption of coastal smuggling networks and the withdrawal of charity rescue ships.

Dozens of people have been killed in a powerful suicide bomb blast that targeted a large gathering of top religious figures in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, according to officials.

Wahid Majroh, health ministry spokesperson, said Tuesday’s explosion killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 70 others.

He added that the death toll could rise further as many of those injured were in critical condition. Najib Danish, interior ministry spokesperson, said “a suicide bomber detonated his explosives” inside a large wedding hall where hundreds of scholars and clerics had gathered to mark the birthday of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

“I heard the explosion, I just managed to take my cousin out of there who was seriously wounded,” Ahmad Fahim said lying in a hospital bed. “But when I got here, I realised that I was wounded as well.”

Religious studies lecturer Mohammad Hanif said verses of the Quran were being recited when there was a deafening explosion followed by “chaos” inside the packed hall.

“More than 60 or 70 people were martyred,” Hanif, 31, told the AFP news agency outside a trauma facility run by Italian NGO Emergency. He escaped unhurt.

“They suffered burns, everyone in the halls was screaming for help.”

A manager of Uranus Wedding Palace, which also hosts political and religious functions, told AFP a suicide bomber blew himself up in the middle of the gathering of religious scholars. “There are a lot of casualties - I myself have counted 30 casualties,” he added, on the condition of anonymity.

Officials at Kabul’s Emergency Hospital said 30 ambulances had rushed to the blast site and more than 40 people were critically wounded. Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the attack and declared Wednesday a day of national mourning, his spokesperson, Haroon Chakhansuri, wrote on Twitter.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The Taliban condemned the attack in a WhatsApp message.

Both the Taliban and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group have stepped up attacks on Kabul.

In June, a suicide attack targeting Muslim scholars who had gathered in a tent near Kabul’s Polytechnic University killed at least seven people.

CRA not treating all taxpayers equally, AG findsi

The Canada Revenue Agency is not treating all taxpayers equally when it comes to auditing or reviewing tax files, a new probe by the federal auditor general has found.

In order to make sure that all Canadians file their taxes properly, the CRA is responsible for auditing or reviewing submissions to ensure compliance with the Income Tax Act. According to a new audit done by Auditor General Michael Ferguson’s office, how your case is handled could depend on who you are, the CRA staff person conducting the review, or where you’re from.

For example, in some cases the CRA didn’t allow individuals to claim some expenses if they could not provide a receipt within 90 days, while some with offshore accounts were given months or even years to provide the information.

“We found that the Canada Revenue Agency did not consistently apply tax rules when it audited or reviewed taxpayers’ files, even though the Taxpayer Bill of Rights includes the right to have the law applied consistently,” the audit states. According to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, all taxpayers in Canada are entitled to have the law applied consistently, have to only pay what’s required, and must receive what they’re entitled to.

Each year the CRA conducts these compliance activities to assess tax claims for their accuracy, to both make sure Canadians pay what they owe, or receive all applicable tax benefits. As the report states, these audits often result in adjustments to peoples’ tax returns. Among the reasons for the inconsistencies in these reviews was the judgment of agency staff differed in application, the type of taxpayer being dealt with such as a small business versus a large corporation; and the region where the tax file was being reassessed. “Taxpayers in one region waited an average of seven months longer than those in another region for the Agency to complete an audit. In one region, it took the Agency more than 40 weeks to process taxpayers’ requests for adjustments, while in another region, the Agency took 12 weeks,” the audit states.

The audit also points out that not enforcing these rules uniformly is costing the public purse in potential lost revenue. As well, in the last five years, the CRA has waived $17 million in interest and penalties for some who were in the process of being audited.

ceived almost $1 billion to help crack down on tax evasion and enforce compliance.

The CRA says it agrees with the audit’s recommendations, which include setting a prescribed allowable timeframe for these compliance audits to be conducted; and consistently apply and enforce the Income Tax Act, by 2020.

In a statement, National Revenue Minister Diane Lebouthillier said she wants to remind Canadians that she is working on their behalf to make sure the tax system is fair.

“With regards to our processes, through education, outreach and enforcement, the CRA continuously strives to apply the law consistently while taking taxpayers’ individual circumstances into account,” she said.

NDP MP David Christopherson expressed deep frustration with the auditor general’s findings. Citing an audit released in November, 2017 that found that Canada’s tax collectors often aren’t picking up the phone, and when they do, Canadians are being given incorrect information, he took issue with this latest revelation of unfair practices, specifically that “big corporations and wealthy people” could be getting special treatment.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said she found the CRA audit “troubling.”

“The CRA needs to shift its Sheriff of Nottingham approach to tax-collection and have the rich pay their fair share rather than concentrate audits on hardworking Canadians because it’s easier to have them pay,” May said.

Conservative deputy leader Lisa Raitt told CTV’s Power Play after the report was released that the Liberals need to “start managing things better.”

“In practical terms, when somebody who is just a regular Joe (or) regular Jane wants to call in to get some information from Revenue Canada, they can’t get them on the phone and they’re turning to their Members of Parliament,” Raitt said. “So the culture needs to be fixed.”

Federal Labour Minister Patty Hajdu says the government will table legislation to end the Canada Post strike unless a resolution is reached soon.

“We strongly encourage both sides to reach a deal and are prepared to table legislation if we do not see a resolution over the next few days, a step we do not take lightly,” she said in a statement.

It’s a move that Canadian Union of Postal Workers national president Mike Palecek says undermines the possibility of the parties being able to negotiate a settlement.

“Free collective bargaining is a Charter right in this country, and we have a government that claims to believe in free collective bargaining, but apparently that means only when it’s convenient,” he told The Canadian Press.

He says that the union plans to return to the table, and hopes that the special mediator appointed by the government will help push Canada Post to negotiate.

“Canada Post only has one game, and it’s to refuse to negotiate and sit back and wait for legislation,” Palecek said. “They’ve done this again and again, and it looks like the government is helping them out.”

The news comes as Canada Post enter the fifth week of rotating strikes by its unionized workers, with neither side making headway in the ongoing contract negotiations.

Hajdu says that despite the government’s belief in the collective bargaining process, supplying conciliation officers and appointed mediators, the two have made “limited promise,” and the government has “exhausted” their options.

The nearly year-long negotiations process seemingly hasn’t seen the two sides come

any closer together, with Canada Post’s responses to major issues like gender inequality, overburdening, and precarious work resulting in an “injury crisis” unsatisfactory, according to the union.

On Monday the Canadian Union of Postal Workers rejected an offer for a “cooling-off ” period of the strikes for the holiday season, as well as a one-time $1,000 bonus for its 50,000 members for accepting the offer.

The strikes have created a severe backlog of undelivered mail, with hundreds of transport trailers sitting at Canada Post’s main Toronto sorting facility, according to the Crown Corporation.

Distribution centres in Vancouver, Edmonton and Montreal are also experiencing significant backlogs, and packages are bottlenecking at border points.

Even with a potential end of the strikes in sight, the walkouts have left Canada Post warning customers it is unable to predict just how long packages may be delayed.

“This is likely to be the situation for the foreseeable future, meaning the next several weeks, including the peak holiday season and through January 2019,” the company said.

There is no point in crying that enemies are plotting our destruction or hatching conspiracies against us. Of course that is what enemies everywhere have been doing throughout history. The question is

We should remember that we are the followers of a Prophet (pbuh) who said that one should seek knowledge even if it means traveling as far as China. Today, as we stumble through a confused and turbulent world and as uncertainly and depression grip large parts of the Muslim world, we should go back to the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh). This is the only way to get rid of the social ills from which we suffer.

Unfortunately, we say one thing and practice something else. The Holy Qur’an says: “Allah will never change the condition of a people until they change what

Not a day passes without some depressing news from one Muslim country or another. Either it is a terrorist attack in Afghanistan or the Syrian Air Force bombing its own people.

Iraq continues to be hit with violence of the most gruesome kind. Mali now joins the list of Muslim countries facing internal turmoil and external intervention.

People continue to be killed in Pakistan either in drone attacks by the US or in inter-sectarian strife. Why?I think no one who reflects on the worsening conditions in the Muslim world can fail to ask these questions: Is this the community envisaged by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was born on 12 Rabi Al-Awwal, and is this the world we would have witnessed if Muslims had proved true to their religion and had lived according to the guidance provided by their Prophet (pbuh) and the teachings of the Holy Qur’an?Muslims may complain of many things but they cannot complain that they have no role model. They have the perfect role model in their Prophet (pbuh).There is no other prophet on whose life so much light has been shed. Living in the full glare of history, his sayings and actions have been documented as no other prophet’s have. Recorded in minute detail, their authenticity has not been questioned by fair-minded scholars and honest historians. It is extremely difficult for the Muslims of today to imagine and much less to endure the hardships that the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions underwent. In the ninth year of his mission, the Prophet (pbuh) — having been persecuted and terrorized by his people in Makkah — headed for Taif, home of the Banu Thaqif tribe. If anything, he was treated even more rudely by the tribal elders, who told him to leave the place and even sent street urchins after him to beat him and pelt him with stones. He bled profusely. His entire body was covered with blood and his sandals became clogged to his feet because of the severity of the beating and torture he was subjected to.

Those who would resort to violence at what they perceive to be insults to the Prophet (pbuh) and Islam should realize that he bore no ill will toward his tormentors. Instead, he made a heartrending invocation to God Almighty beseeching mercy for the people who had persecuted him. Those Muslims who are intolerant and become violent at the slightest provocation are doing a great disservice to their religion and the principle of tolerance it espouses.

When Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) noticed the continued absence of a

woman in Makkah who used to insult him and throw garbage on him as he walked the streets, he asked people about her and visited her after learning that she had fallen ill.

Over 14 centuries have gone by since he left us, but his message still lives on. It can lead us from darkness to light as it once led the Arabs from backwardness to the heights of success and glory. His life was one of mercy, compassion, care, consideration, kindness and tolerance for all. His sayings, known as Hadiths, bear testimony to this. One particular theme he was never tired of stressing concerns the rights of women. You should look at what the Prophet (pbuh) said and did in order to realize what an honorable and respectable position Islam affords women. However, it is sad to see that many Muslims ignore this or behave in a way that gives a very wrong impression about women’s position in an Islamic society. “Fear Allah in respect of women,” the Prophet (pbuh) said.

On another occasion he said: “The best of you are they who are best to their wives.”

Here is another Hadith: “A Muslim must not hate his wife, and if he be displeased with one bad quality in her, let him be pleased with one that is good.” According to him, “The more civil and kind a Muslim is to his wife, the more perfect in faith he is.”

In what was considered a revolutionary idea at that time, the Prophet (pbuh) taught his companions to remain in their mothers’ service, saying that Paradise lies beneath their feet. Today, we violate the Prophet’s teachings over this and so many other things, which creates so many problems for us and brings a bad name to our religion.

Start with the self-appointed guardians of faith. They preach piety, but are they pious? Do they live by the tenets of Islam? They preach, but do not practice. What about those who spew hate, abuse and defame others – all in the name of religion? Have they not read about the Prophet’s attitude and behavior toward all those around him including the ones who abused him and tried to kill him?

Do people in authority follow the precepts of the Prophet (pbuh)? If they did, so many Muslim countries would not be in ferment, providing an opportunity for outsiders to inter-

What’d I miss?: Electoral Reform in B.C.

ere’s a guide to voting in BC’s referendum.

Have you noticed the ballots and pamphlets in your mailbox?

B.C.’s upcoming 2018 Referendum on Electoral Reform will decide whether we keep our first-past-the-post system (FPTP) or switch to one of three proportional representation (PR) systems. This is following two previous referendums, one in 2005 and one in 2009, neither of which brought any changes.

Voting in the referendum could entirely restructure B.C.’s politics, but currently, about one third of British Columbians are undecided about how to vote. Anyone who is a Canadian citizen, is 18 or older, and has been a resident of British Columbia for at least the past six months is eligible to vote. The voting packages will be delivered until November 2, and ballots must be returned to Elections B.C. by November 30.

The referendum ballot will ask you two questions. First, it’ll ask whether we should keep our current system or switch to PR. Then, voters will be asked to rank all three proportional representation systems in order of preference on a separate ballot, so that we’ll know which system to switch to if the answer to the first question is “yes.” This second question makes it important to have an understanding of all of the systems, even if you would rather stick to first-past-the-post.

Current: First-past-the-post (FPTP) BC’s current voting system is first-pastthe-post (FPTP).

FPTP splits up the province geographically into electoral districts, or ridings, which each elect an MLA to represent them — in this case, in the provincial legislature. Voters choose one candidate for their district, and a candidate needs to win the most votes to win their seat. So, there’s one seat in the legislature for each district, and for each district a party wins, they also win a seat; the breakdown of individual votes for each party is irrelevant. FPTP is currently used in many countries, including the United Kingdom.

Critics FPTP point out that under it, legisla-

ture does not proportionally reflect the votes.

This system often favours candidates from large parties, and often results in single-party majority governments (meaning that a single party holds more than 50% of the seats in the legislature and therefore holds enough votes to overrule any decision made).

Advantages of FPTP include how easy it is both for voters to to use and understand, and it is easy to administer and manage as well. Some fans of FPTP also argue that this system bars extremist or fringe parties from gaining political power.

Proportional Representation alternatives According to Fair Vote Canada BC, “proportional representation is a principle underlying a voting system: People should be represented in proportion to how they voted.”

In other words, under proportional representation, a party would receive roughly the same percentage of seats as they do votes.

While there are many different systems designed to yield proportional results, the three that we will be voting on in B.C. are dualmember proportional (DMP), mixed-member proportional (MMP), and rural-urban proportional (RUP).

Dual-Member Proportional (DMP) Dual-member proportional representation would rearrange B.C.’s electoral districts to reconfigure how our MLAs are selected.

Most ridings, aside from large rural ones, would fuse with an adjacent riding. These new ridings would each have two MLAs. During an election, in an urban riding, each party could run a primary and secondary candidate, and voters would select their party of choice, rather than their preferred candidate.

The winning party’s main candidate is elected as one of the MLAs. Independents would only be elected if they place first or second in the riding.

The second MLA is chosen by comparing the winning party’s secondary candidate to the other parties’ eligible main candidates, except that now the winning party’s secondary candidate is given half of their party’s votes.

From there, seats are proportionally distributed across ridings based off of each party’s performance on a provincial level, with some extra caveats that you can read more about on B.C. Elections’ website.

CBC explains that while “this system would favour primary candidates from the party that finished second in a riding sometimes, a secondary candidate from a winning party would get in if the party did both really well in that riding and across the province generally.”

DMP was developed in Canada, but is currently not used anywhere in the world.

Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP) In mixed-member proportional representation, voters would elect one local MLA (as we do now), as well as MLAs representing a new kind of riding called a region. About 60% of the MLAs would be local, and the remaining 40% would be regional.

Under MMP, voters would choose their preferred local MLA as we do now, and the local candidates would be elected as they are now under first-past-the-post. In addition, voters would also choose their preferred regional candidate from a party list, and the regional candidates would be elected to ensure that the overall composition of MLAs reflects the proportions of the vote. Similar to the DMP system we talked about, a party must get at least 5% of the vote to gain a regional seat.

This system is currently used in Germany, New Zealand, and Scotland, among others.

The specific size and limits of future electoral districts and regions have not been decided yet; these will be designated by a legislative committee if MMP is chosen in the referendum. This committee will also decide if voters have one vote or two under this system, since both are in use internationally.

Rural-urban proportional representation (RUP) Rural-urban proportional representation merges two other systems, MMP and single

transferable vote (STV), to ensure that urban and rural voters are represented equally.

In rural areas, voters would elect local and regional MLAs with the MMP system. In urban (geographically small but densely populated) areas, voters would use STV to elect their MLAs. In STV, multiple ridings would be merged into one multi-district riding in which voters would elect a small team of MLAs. Instead of voting for their single favourite candidate, voters would number off the candidates on the ballot to indicate how much they liked each one (so you would mark your favourite candidate number-one, your second would be marked number-two, et cetera.) Parties could run many candidates per district as well.

If RUP were to be chosen, an independent commission would determine the boundaries of all the various districts. British Columbia would also be the only place in the world using RUP system, though MMP and STV are both used individually.

Aseem Khan was the MC of this event. After the recitation of Quran, local Naat Khawans recited Naats time to time in their beautiful voices included Br. Muzammil Ahmed, Br. Sheryar Khan, Hafiz M.Yousaf, Br. Abdur Rasool Salis and Saad Abdur Rasool.

The Eid Mild un Nabi speeches delivered by guest English speakers in sequences, Shaykh Sayed Nurjan Mirahamadi from Naqsbandi centre, Imam and Khateeb of Fleetwood Islamic Centre Qari o Hafiz Imran Raza, Peer Afzal Ahmed Naqsbandi from Bullay Shah Academy of Canada. All they focused on love of Prophet(saw) and teachings of Quran and Sunnah. At the end Local dynamic Urdu speaker Maulana A. At Eid Milad un Nabi celebrations 9 injured in IED blast at mosque in Balochistan’s Chaman

At least nine people were injured in an explosion inside a mosque in Balochistan’s Chaman area on Wednesday evening, DawnNewsTV reported.

The prayer leader (khateeb) of the mosque was among those injured in the blast that took place during maghrib prayers, police sources said. The mosque is located on Taj Road in Chaman, which lies near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) hidden inside the mosque, police sources told DawnNewsTV. The blast was so powerful that it was heard far and wide.The injured were rushed to Civil Hospital Chaman for medical treatment where a state of emergency was imposed to treat the injured.TV footage following the blast showed

smoke inside the mosque and shattered glass lying on carpets. Police, Levies and Frontier Corps officials cordoned off the site of the explosion. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast so far. The incident comes on a day when Eid Miladun Nabi is being celebrated across the country. Strict security measures have been taken in connection with the processions being carried out today.Chaman is considered a sensitive town in Balochistan as it shares a border with Afghanistan’s volatile Kandahar province.

Mayors’ Council supports City of Surrey’s request to cancel LRT and build SkyTrain

” Surrey, BC – At its first meeting since the civic elections last month, the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation has endorsed the City of Surrey’s decision to cancel light rail and switch the technology to SkyTrain.

“Surrey has long been a full partner in building rapid transit transportation for the rest of

the region and Surrey has been waiting a long time for its turn,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “I commend the members of the Mayors’ Council who supported the resolutions for their foresight and recognition that the residents of Surrey have said unreservedly that the best rapid transit option for our city is SkyTrain. This is a golden opportunity to move forward and start building.”

On November 5th, after taking the Oath of Office, Surrey City Council convened a Regular Council meeting where a motion was introduced and passed unanimously to cancel the Surrey Newton Guildford LRT project and to begin work on extending the exist-

ing SkyTrain network in Surrey from King George Station to Langley City. 4,900 new affordable rental homes on the way for B.C. families

By Premier John Horgan Every person in this province deserves a secure place to call home. But years of inaction on the B.C. housing crisis has left people unable to find affordable housing, and even middle-income families struggling to get by. We’re making different choices.

On Tuesday, our government made a historic announcement - 4,900 new affordable mixed-income rental homes will be built in 42 communities around the province.

This new housing is the first to be delivered through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund, a $1.9 billion investment over 10 years to deliver 14,000 affordable rental homes for seniors, families, and lowand-middle income earners in B.C. From Surrey, to Kamloops to Vancouver and Vanderhoof, the 72 projects will include new, affordable homes for people across a range of income levels.

The non-profits and co-ops will be built over the next two to three years. The new homes are designed to address the need for affordable housing for middle, moderate,

and low-income earners, in response to a housing crisis that has made housing unaffordable for even middle-class families. The units will also include heavily subsidized rentals for seniors and people with disabilities, and homes for low wage workers.

It’s an important part of our work to take action on the housing crisis and give people a break from skyrocketing housing costs around B.C. It also means people in can stay in their communities, and be part of B.C.’s robust, sustainable economy.

Budget 2018 included the biggest investment in housing affordability in B.C.’s history – more than $7 billion over 10 years.

We are beginning to see the impacts of that funding on the ground as part of our 30 point, cross-government plan to tackle supply, curb demand and provide more security for renters.

Our Rapid Response to Homelessness program has already been put into action. By the end of 2019, we will have built more than 2000 modular homes with 24/7 support services in 22 communities. So far, 600

modular homes have been built in four B.C. communities, helping people get out of tent cities, off the street, and on the path to opportunity.

We’ve also started 12 projects that will provide 280 safe new homes for women and children fleeing violence and abuse.

And for the first time in Canadian history, a province has taken steps, together with Indigenous leaders, to directly address the housing needs of Indigenous communities on-reserve.

People need an opportunity to survive,

thrive, and get ahead. That starts with knowing that you and your family have a place to come home to.

We’re working collaboratively across the aisle and with local partners to deliver safe, secure, and affordable housing for British Columbians. It’s good for people, it’s good for communities and it’s good for the economy. And it’s only the beginning.

UN hopes for meeting on Syria constitution by late December

NEW YORK: The UN is still aiming to send invitations to 150 Syrians by mid-December to participate in a committee that would draft a new constitution for Syria, which is key to holding elections and ending the country’s civil war, a UN envoy said on Monday.

Staffan de Mistura, the UN special envoy for Syria, told the Security Council that the UN also aims to hold the committee’s first meeting before Dec. 31.

But de Mistura said the Syrian regime is objecting to 50 members of the committee representing civil society, experts, independents, tribal leaders and women that he was authorized to put together at a Russian-hosted Syrian peace conference in Sochi on Jan. 30.

Under the Sochi agreement, the committee is to comprise 150 members. There is already agreement on the 50-member delegation from the regime and the 50-member delegation from the opposition.

A court in the United Arab Emirates has sentenced British student Matthew Hedges to life in prison after he was convicted of spying and supplying sensitive security information to external actors.

Abu Dhabi’s Federal Court of Appeal handed down the verdict on Wednesday, a move described as deeply disappointing by British Prime Minister Theresa May. “We can confirm that he was sentenced to life in prison.

The hearing lasted less than five minutes, and his lawyer was not present,” Hedges’ family spokesperson told AFP news agency.

Hedges, a 31-year-old PhD student at Durham University, was arrested on May 5 at Dubai airport after a two-week research visit.

He was researching the UAE’s foreign and internal security policies after the Arab Spring

revolutions of 2011 when he was detained.

Hedges was formally charged in October with spying on the Gulf state, where he has been held in solitary confinement for the past six months.“I am in complete shock and I don’t know what to do. Shooting in Newton: One person dead after Surrey shooting

Homicide police have taken over the investigation into the incident, which happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday in Newton.

An early-morning targeted shooting in Surrey has left one man dead.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Surrey RCMP

received a report of a person on the ground outside of a home in the 14200-block 70A Avenue, in Newton.

Police found a 22-year-old man dead. He had been shot.

Police cordoned off the area and expect to be there “for a significant amount of time,” according to a Surrey RCMP news release.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took over the case.“Although investigators are still working to determine the motive behind this homicide, there are no indications of an increased risk to the public as a result of this incident,” said IHIT spokesman Cpl. Frank Jang in a statement later Friday.

What is type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes, formerly referred to as juvenile diabetes, is a disease in which an individual’s insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas get destroyed, causing an absolute lack of insulin.

What is type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes, formerly referred to as adult onset diabetes mellitus, is a disease that increases in frequency with advancing age. Individuals can still produce insulin (unlike in type 1 diabetes), but do not produce enough insulin to meet their body’s needs.

What causes diabetes?

Without enough insulin, the body can’t regulate the blood sugar needed to create energy. Although the disease usually occurs during childhood or adolescence, it can also develop in adults. And while it’s definitive cause is still unknown, Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by genetics and exposure to environmental factors that may trigger the disease. These include viruses such as German measles or mumps.

If you have a parent or sibling with type 1 diabetes, your chances are slightly increased for developing the condition yourself. Researchers have also discovered that the disease can develop in people who have a variance of genes in their HLA (human leukocyte antigen) complex, which is used to help the immune system function properly.

Type 2 Diabetes Causes

More common in adults, type 2 diabetes occurs when your body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn’t produce enough to maintain a normal blood sugar level. Specifically why this happens is still unknown, although genetics and lifestyle factors (such as excess weight and inactivity) can be contributing factors. Being overweight is strongly linked to the development of type 2 diabetes but not everyone with the condition is overweight.

Diabetes Canada is proud to join more than 1 billion people in over 160 countries in commemorating World Diabetes Day, the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign. Marked every year on the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin in Canada in 1921 with Charles Best, World Diabetes Day is an opportunity to recognize one of our nation’s greatest achievements. But, this year, Diabetes Canada is asking Canadians to also recognize that we are facing a diabetes epidemic and immediate action is needed to confront the many challenges that still lie ahead for the 11 million Canadians affected by diabetes.

“Canada has made an extraordinary contribution to the way in which we live with diabetes, but the need to win the fight to end it is greater than ever,” says Dr. Jan Hux, President and CEO of Diabetes Canada. “The number of Canadians living with diabetes has doubled since 2000, and the cost of this epidemic to Canada’s health-care system is expected to be more than $27 billion this year alone. Diabetes Canada is calling for an investment of $150 million over seven years, which can save the health-care system more than $9 billion while preventing the development of nearly one million diabetes cases. Diabetes Canada is also calling on the public to join a day of action, using an online advocacy tool available at diabetes.ca/strategy to send a message urging the government to fund the strategic action plan in Budget 2019.

“The theme of World Diabetes Day 2018 is ‘The Family and Diabetes’,” says Hux. “A recent poll we conducted with Ipsos shows that about half (49%) of Canadians have a family member living with diabetes. We all have a stake in the future of Canada’s healthcare system, and we all have a role to play in asserting Canada’s role as a global leader in ending the diabetes epidemic.”

The burden on families of those affected by diabetes is large. A third, or 32 per cent of those living with or caring for someone with diabetes, have missed work due to the disease, including 15 per cent of those that have left the workforce because of it. UBAI: Saudi Arabia’s goal to eradicate illiteracy has been applauded by international experts and educational bodies, who say the Kingdom is a role model for countries in the Arab world, where more than a quarter of women, men and children are unable to read or write.

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia pledged to raise its literacy rate from 94.4 percent to 100 percent by 2024, and experts say the Kingdom can now play a major part in helping to eradicate illiteracy in the wider region.

According to the Project Literacy alliance, a coalition of charities and businesses, illiteracy is a major barrier to worldwide economic development, costing at least $1 trillion (SR3.75 trillion) per year. It says that today about 750 million adults worldwide are unable to read or write.

“If the Kingdom is able to make the investment to eradicate illiteracy in their country, it will be a great example to other countries in the Arab world, and worth sharing best practices and the model they used for their success,” Alesha Anderson, senior program officer for ProLiteracy, another advocacy group, told Arab News.

Anderson hailed the Kingdom’s efforts to boost literacy rates, especially the country’s projects to tackle adult illiteracy. According to Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Education (MOE), the current literacy rate was achieved by boosting enrolment in thousands of schools, vocational colleges and universities, with the aim of achieving 100 percent literacy by 2024. Among its many initiatives, the MOE has rolled out adult education centers across the Kingdom, introduced lifelong learning initiatives, neighborhood learning programs, educational and literacy campaigns in remote areas of the country and implemented financially based reward programs to work toward an illiteracy-free society.

The government has also granted $51 billion to the education sector in 2018 as part of Vision 2030, its ambitious program to reduce

economic dependency on oil sales. Since launching the Adult Education and Literacy System in 1972, and the General Secretariat for Adult Education and Literacy in 1977, the country has seen illiteracy rates fall from 60 percent in 1972 to 5.6 percent in 2018.

“Having a 100 percent literacy rate is ambitious, but when a government makes a commitment to address adult literacy issues in their country, we are excited as adults can often be left out of the national education agenda and funding for adult education is often non-existent or very low,” said Anderson. “Yet research suggests that investing in youth and adults (particularly mothers) can directly impact and improve rates for children’s literacy as well.

“Limited funding and visibility are given to the issue of adult literacy on a global scale, and the proposed campaign the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is planning has the potential to impact 27 countries in the Arab world by promoting and sharing the results of their program.”

Anderson said Saudi Arabia and the neighboring UAE, which also has several initiatives underway to improve literacy rates, could use their political and geographic influence to lead the way in the adult literacy discourse across the region.

“They can do this both in terms of providing funding to lower-income countries, and by starting a conversation and advocating for the importance of literacy, especially for women and girls.”

Anderson said Middle Eastern countries that have strong economies and are advanced in their development tended to have higher literacy rates. However, there was still a significant need for literacy, especially in the adult population, for many countries in the region.

“The disparity in literacy rates is especially evident in looking at the variance between literacy rates for men and women. In places like Afghanistan, Egypt, Morocco, Yemen and Sudan, women’s illiteracy rates, in particular, tend to be high. For example, the literacy rate, for adult females (ages 15 and above) in Egypt was reported at 68.06 percent in 2015, according to the World Bank. In Afghanistan, more than three times as many men as women are literate. Some 47 percent of Afghan men and a mere 15 percent of women can read and write, according to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).”

According to Project Literacy, two-thirds of the worldwide illiterate population are women. Furthermore, 123 million 15- to 24-yearolds in the world today cannot read or write.

“Female literacy is absolutely important and should be a priority in the Arab region. Access to education for women is still extremely limited, especially in countries that restrict women’s role in society,” Anderson said.

“Research shows that educating a mother results in her children and community also being educated because she will pass it on.

Despite cultural restrictions for women, there are ways to include women in the education process. For example, we have a partner program in Afghanistan that has educated women by only registering men in a class if they agree to bring their wife or sister. In this way, women are allowed to learn alongside men and not excluded from the literacy class.”

Traditionally, Anderson said, barriers to success in national or large-scale literacy campaigns include lack of teacher training, curriculum and support for learners after achieving a certain level of literacy.

Despite the social benefits, tackling illiteracy

has huge economic advantages. Each year, illiteracy costs a developed nation 2 percent of its GDP, an emerging economy 1.2 percent of its GDP and a developing country 0.5 percent of its GDP, she said.

The UN defines illiteracy as “the inability to read and write a simple message in any language.” While Saudi Arabia and the UAE are setting benchmarks to tackle illiteracy, other countries across the Middle East paint a more dire picture, with Afghanistan topping the highest illiteracy rates (72 percent of the population over the age of 15), followed

by Pakistan (50 percent), Mauritania (49 percent), Morocco (48 percent) and Yemen (46 percent), according to the Global Campaign for Education.

Andrew Kay, CEO and founder of the World Literacy Foundation, said almost 20 percent of the global population was illiterate, while in the Arab region, 27.1 percent of people were unable to read or write.

“This means that even these basic educational standards are unmet,” said Kay. “Despite significant progress since the 1980s, the black cloud of illiteracy is still weighing heavily on some Arab countries that are going through a critical phase and facing tremendous political, social and economic challenges.

“Saudi Arabia’s literacy rates are much better than other countries in the region, although there are still disadvantaged people that struggle to read. Increased funding and a holistic government approach is a step in the right direction, but we need to ensure the specialist literacy support goes to the people where there is the greatest need.

“Often minorities, migrants and disadvantaged people have low-level literacy skills.

Therefore, providing gender equality and fairness to all people in our literacy support and intervention is fundamental.” Kay said oil-rich countries such as Saudi Arabia could help its Arab neighbors through “leading by example,” and providing literacy grants,

•Make a list of all your strengths. Include the big ones that are huge components of your personality, like your patience, all the way down to the small things you are good at. See how many great qualities you contribute to the world!

•Now make a list of all your weaknesses.

Write down things you don’t like about your personality or you feel are negative traits.

•Look at your list of weaknesses. Think about ways you could see those weaknesses as positives. For example, say one of your weaknesses is that you think you talk too much. You could reframe this to a positive as, “It’s easy for me to express my opinion.”

“I’m too sensitive” could be reframed as, “I have empathy for others.”

Stay true to yourself. To appreciate and accept yourself, it is important to know who you are. It may be helpful to identify your personal values. Knowing what is important to you and making decisions based on your personal values helps you be authentic and appreciate your true self. Make sure your values are your own and you are not simply taking on the values of your friends or family. Figure out what is important to you.

•Explore which values are important to you and write them down. A concrete list of your values may help you recognize when you are being inauthentic to yourself and your values.

•You may feel like other people may not like you if they see the “real” you. It may be helpful for you to explore these feelings with someone you trust or by writing in a journal. Determine when you feel most yourself and when you feel the need to pretend to be someone else, and explore the differences

between those situations.

•If you feel you cannot be yourself around certain friends or family, perhaps because you fear being made fun of, then it may be a sign that you fear rejection about revealing your true self.

•The first step to changing your behavior is noticing when you do it. Pay attention and later, spend some time reflecting on what triggered your behavior in a particular situation. It may take a while for you to feel comfortable enough to be your authentic self around other people. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t do it right away.

A Safer Canada: Gun Laws That Target Criminals

C

riminals don’t follow gun laws, and law-abiding gun owners aren’t criminals. Justin Trudeau’s approach to guns fails to address the real problem – criminals who use guns to commit violence.

This failure has consequences. As experts – including the newly appointed RCMP Commissioner - have pointed out, a blanket handgun ban will do nothing to curb gun violence and will instead only make criminals out of law-abiding firearms owners.

Most gun crime in Canada involves guns that are illegally smuggled into Canada. On November 20, Andrew Scheer announced the second of three policy pillars in his plan for A Safer Canada: Gun Laws That Target Criminals. Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives will ensure that anyone who is found with a smuggled gun goes to prison.

Our firearms laws will make sure these guns don’t fall into the wrong hands. That means targeting criminals, not hunters and sportshooters Andrew Scheer’s plan consists of the following proposals: 1. Prison time for knowingly possessing a smuggled gun The vast majority of gun crimes are committed with illegally obtained firearms. A

particularly high number are committed with firearms illegally smuggled into the country. There is no legitimate reason to be in possession of a firearm that has been smuggled into Canada. That is why a Conservative government under Andrew Scheer will ensure that anyone who is knowingly in possession of a smuggled gun is sent to federal prison.

2. Tackling “straw purchases” Law enforcement and municipal leaders have flagged concerns around guns purchased legally being diverted into the hands of criminals. A Conservative government led by Andrew Scheer will ensure that anyone found to engage in this behaviour will face serious consequences, including prison time and a lifetime ban from owning firearms.

3. Create a CBSA Firearms Smuggling Task Force Many guns used in crime are illegally smuggled into Canada by organized crime.

A Conservative government led by Andrew Scheer will create a CBSA Firearms Smuggling Task Force. This task force will oversee an increase of frontline officers, deployment of new technology, and further use of criminal intelligence. They will also be

authorized to work with law enforcement counterparts on both sides of the border to identify smuggling routes, and ensure that smugglers and those employing them are put behind bars where they belong.

4. Temporary gun seizures for detained mental health patients It is important to ensure that individuals who are mentally unstable do not have access to firearms. Provinces have established legislation relating to detaining individuals experiencing mental health distress for their own protection. However, there is a patchwork approach between provinces as to how those who have firearms licenses are dealt with. A Conservative government led by Andrew Scheer will ensure that any firearms owner detained under provincial mental health legislation will immediately have their firearms seized. They will be able to apply, after a period of time, to have their property returned if they can demonstrate that their condition has stabilized.

5. Lifetime firearms ban for violent and gang criminals Gun laws need to target criminals, not lawabiding gun owners. Individuals who have demonstrated serious violent behaviour or have been involved in gang activity have forfeited the right to ever be trusted to own a firearm. A Conservative government by Andrew Scheer will make lifetime firearms bans mandatory for all serious personal injury offences and gang crimes.

6. New penalties for selling guns to prohibited users When the courts decide that an individual should never be trusted to own a firearm, government should uphold that decision.

Any individual who knowingly provides a firearm to an individual who is the subject of a gun ban is committing a serious crime.

A Conservative government led by Andrew Scheer will ensure that these individuals face serious prison time and that they them-

selves will be prohibited from owning a firearm for life.

7. New tools for police to solve gun crime Law enforcement agencies across Canada have continually said that they face challenges getting convictions for firearms crime. A Conservative government led by Andrew Scheer will take steps to improve this situation by encouraging firearms manufacturers to improve traceability, require the submission of ballistic data on crime guns, and by ensuring that the RCMP crime lab is appropriately resourced.
