Of these people, 5 of them were sent on behalf of the Zaad- Ul- Hujjaj Foundation. Aimed at providing pilgrimages to those Muslims who are unable to afford it, the Foundation successfully completed its first year of operation.

With the help of their generous donors and supporters, they were able to collect sufficient funds to send 5 people to perform Hajj, 1 person to perform Umrah in the month of Ramadan, and 1 performance of Hajj al- Badl through scholars in Pakistan. Furthermore, with the help of Maulana Zafar Abid, they were able to provide the pilgrims with free classes to prepare them for Hajj. The experiences of these people can be best understood through the words of one pilgrim whose life goal was to perform Hajj with his elderly parents. He states “the Zaad- Ul- Hujjaj Foundation came in my life as

an inordinate stepping- stone and a reminder that it was my duty to procure my parents’ wishes. They provided me with everything I was lacking in and helped me through the whole process of providing the sufficient money, getting the Hajj Visa, getting Hajj training; overall helping me in any way they could. At first, I thought this was impossible but when things started to come along, there were feelings I had which cannot be explained in words.”

Furthermore, he adds, “now that I have done Hajj, my wish is to continue this religious practice through Zaad-Ul- Hujjaj by helping those who are lacking financially or have no starting point.” That is, he hopes to pass on the gift of Hajj so someone can cherish it as much as he and his family did. The resolution brought up by the Vancouver Island community of Metchosin called for a resolution to ask the province to ban plants and animals produced by using genetic engineering. (Ref. 24Hr).

The matter of Genetically Modified Food is very complex and emotional too. As GMO food is little cheaper than the Organic food, which is affordable by us all, but not as healthy as normal Organic food.

Majority of the people are against Genetically Modified food for the simple reason that it is grown with more pesticide, fungicide and artificial ways and so consider it as fake food, like fake news or fake religions that ruins lives, health, mind and soul.

Passage of delimitation bill delayed further

Passage of the delimitation bill was delayed again in the Senate as the government, which has apparently failed to garner support from the opposition parties, refrained from presenting the bill before the upper house on Wednesday, DawnNews reported.

The 24th constitutional amendment will allow the conduct of delimitation of constituencies on the basis of provisional census results and has already been passed by the National Assembly earlier this month.The Senate had been unable to pass the bill on November 17 as several legislators had remained absent from the session on that day. Only 58 of the 104 senators had attended the session.

The bill was placed on the Senate’s agenda again on No-

vember 20. However, the absence of lawmakers had once again delayed the passage of the bill. The leader of the house, Raja Zafarul Haq, had sought deferment for two days and the bill was placed on Senate’s agenda for today.

However, today the voting on the bill was deferred until Friday.

Earlier, Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani held a meeting with Zafarul Haq and Opposition leader in Senate Aitzaz Ahsan.

Expressing his concern, Rabbani said that elections must be held on time and requested both the leaders to play their role in making it possible. The bill is meant to pave the way for the timely conduct of the 2018 general elections, he said.

Ahsan said, “Only a few days have gone by, not months,” adding that soon the bill will be passed.

Talking to the media following his meeting with the chairman, Ahsan said that negotiations for the approval of the bill are still ongoing.

“A final decision is yet to be reached on the matter,” he added.

“The PPP should be asked why it has opposed the bill,” Senator Haq, also speaking to the media, said.

“Negotiations with the PPP are ongoing,” he said, adding that he was not aware what conditions the party has set.

PIA incurred Rs1.5 billion losses on New York service last year: aviation official

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) incurred losses worth Rs1.5 billion from flights to New York last year, Secretary Aviation Irfan Elahi informed the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs on Wednesday.

He was answering a question by MNA Tariq Javed who inquired why PIA’s service to New York was discontinued.

Elahi also informed the committee that the service had been incurring losses for the past 10-12 years.

“Why do you not resign if the airlines is incurring such great losses?” Javed asked Elahi. At this Elahi said that he was ready to quit, adding that he was also serving as PIA chairman without receiving any extra benefits or salary.

US President Donald Trump on Monday declared North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism, returning Kim Jong-Un’s nucleararmed pariah regime to a short blacklist of targeted US foes.

North Korea is already under a wide array of United States and United Nations sanctions, and the terror designation will not have much immediate economic impact in itself. The White House has declared it will not tolerate Kim’s regime testing or deploying an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to US cities.

Experts believe Pyongyang is within months of such a threshold, having carried out six nuclear tests since 2006 and test-fired several types of missiles, including multi-stage rockets.

Kim’s government insists it will defy international sanctions to develop a capability it believes is essential to defending itself from the threat of US and South Korean invasion.

Later she said that while the situation was regrettable, “we nevertheless have stability in our country.” Her comments came after President Frank-Walter Steinmeier appealed to political leaders to rethink their positions and try again to form a new government.

“We now face a situation that we haven’t had in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, so in nearly 70 years,” Steinmeier told reporters after meeting Merkel.

It is Steinmeier who will have to decide whether to pave the way for a minority government or call a new election. “This is the moment at which all parties should pause and reconsider their position,” he said. “I expect from everyone readiness to talk, in order to make the formation of a government possible in the foreseeable future.” Merkel spent four weeks haggling with the Free Democrats and the Greens on a new, untried governing coalition until the Free Democrats walked out Sunday night. Martin Schulz, the leader of her current coalition partner, the Social Democrats, reiterated Monday that his party was “not available” for a repeat, even without Merkel in charge, and that a minority government “is not practicable in Germany.”

Steinmeier said he will meet leaders of all the parties involved in the failed talks, as well as others, in the coming days. It’s likely to be months before the situation is resolved. If neither the Free Democrats nor the Social Democrats budge, that leaves as the only options another election or a minority government. The German Constitution doesn’t allow parliament to dissolve itself, so the decision lies with Steinmeier.

“I don’t have a minority government in my plans,” Merkel said in an interview Monday with ARD public television. “I don’t want to say never today, but I am very skeptical and I think that new elections would then be the better way.” To get to either

destination, the president would first have to propose a chancellor to parliament, who must win a majority of all lawmakers to be elected. Assuming that fails, parliament has 14 days to elect a candidate of its own choosing by an absolute majority. And if that fails, Steinmeier would then propose a candidate who could be elected by a plurality of lawmakers. Steinmeier would then have to decide whether to appoint a minority government or dissolve parliament, triggering an election within 60 days. Merkel’s two-party Union bloc is easily the biggest group in parliament, but is 109 seats short of a majority. Merkel made clear that her pre-election pledge to serve another full term stands and indicated that she was ready to run again. “I was always asked in the election campaign, ‘Will you be ready to serve Germany as chancellor for four years?’” Merkel said. “Two months have passed (since the election), so it would be very strange ... to say that what I told voters during the whole election campaign doesn’t stand anymore.” The nationalist Alternative for Germany, which emerged from September’s election as the third-biggest party, welcomed the coalition debacle.

“Merkel has failed,” party co-leader Alexander Gauland said. “We think it’s time for her to go.” Meanwhile, the blame game was in full swing. The Free Democrats’ leader, Christian Lindner, defended ending the talks, telling reporters “we would have had to abandon our fundamental positions” to join a government with the conservatives and Greens. He pointed in particular to compromises his party would have had to have made on key issues like migration policies, financial issues and education.

Social Democrats’ leader Schulz said the negotiating parties had put Germany “in a difficult situation.” To which the senior Free Democrat, Wolfgang Kubicki, replied: “If there are new elections, it’s because of the Social Democrats, not because of us.”

Other European countries expressed concern, with French President Emmanuel Macron saying that “it’s not in our interest for it to get tense.” Steinmeier underlined those worries. “There would be incomprehension and great concern inside and outside our country, and particularly in our European neighbourhood, if the political forces in the biggest and economically strongest country in Europe of all places didn’t fulfil their responsibility,” he said.

B.C.’s upcoming referendum on electoral TransLink considering charging reform will stand, Attorney-General says by distance instead of by zone The 2018 provincial referendum on electoral reform will be the last word on whether voters want to change how they select their elected officials in British Columbia, Attorney-General David Eby said Monday. Mr. Eby will launch public consultations later this week to shape the referendum question, providing both experts and average British Columbians with the opportunity to design what the question – or questions – will be, and to shape rules on spending limits and any public funding for proponents. “The goal is to provide British Columbians with a very clear opportunity to state their preference about where they want to go,” Mr. Eby said in an interview. “I just have a hard time imagining, coming out of a process like that, that there could be any further discussion to be had.” British Columbians have already been asked twice in the past 12 years if they want to change the existing first-pastthe-post voting system, and Mr. Eby says, if the measure fails again, “that would settle the question.” The NDP minority government, in its agreement with the BC Green caucus, has promised a mail-in ballot next year that will ask if voters want to change to some form of proportional representation – a voting system where the number of seats each party gets in the legislature is based on their percentage of the popular vote. For the Greens, working toward proportional representation is a fundamental tenet, and at a recent roundtable forum with The Globe and Mail, party leader Andrew Weaver said that commitment won’t disappear even if voters reject change for a third time. “It defines who we are,” he said. However, Mr. Weaver said there will be little public appetite to keep going back to voters, should this vote fail to yield a change to the voting system. “I don’t think people would want you to … have a referendum every four years – so it’s not the last one in the future, but certainly I would say for the foreseeable future.” In 2005, B.C. voters were asked if they wanted to replace the current first-past-the-post system with one that would use a single transferable vote (STV).

That proposal won 57.7-per-cent approval from voters, just below the 60-per-cent threshold that had been set as the minimum level of required support. In 2009, voters were asked again to approve a shift to the STV system, but support dropped to just below 40 per cent.

The STV system – a form of proportional representation that allows voters in each riding to rank candidates by preference – had been proposed by a citizens’ assembly that had

been appointed to study electoral reform. Mr. Weaver said the vote failed because it was too difficult to explain how the new voting system would work. But now, with both the NDP and Greens campaigning for change, Mr. Weaver says he is hopeful that this time around voters will embrace a new voting system. The Greens have agreed to support the NDP government on key measures, in part as a demonstration to show how a minority government system can work in British Columbia. In last spring’s provincial election, the Liberals and NDP each earned slightly more than 40 per cent of the popular vote, but the New Democrats eventually formed a minority government with the support of the Greens, who received almost 17 per cent of the popular vote but took just three of 87 seats. B.C.’s first-past-the-post system has delivered results in the legislature that can vary significantly from voters’ preferences. In 1996, the NDP formed a majority government even though the Liberals had a greater share of the popular vote. (The NDP won more seats, while the Liberals’ votes were spread out.) In 2001, the Liberals captured 77 of 79 seats in the Legislature with just 57 per cent of the total votes cast. Premier John Horgan has said he will actively campaign in favour of change, arguing that the current system is unfair. The referendum, to be held as a mail-in vote in the fall of 2018, may offer more than one choice for a new model. If the measure passes with a bare majority of votes, British Columbia will use the new voting system in the next provincial election in 2021. The opposition BC Liberals oppose the proposed law that will enable the referendum. Andrew Wilkinson, the Liberal critic for the attorney-general, has said the process “really tears at the fabric of our democracy.”

The federal government has announced the details of its ten-year national housing strategy, which includes the introduction of a housing benefit for families that won’t kick in until after the next federal election. “[This is a] new, innovative plan that reestablishes the role the federal government must play in housing,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in announcing the plan in Toronto.“Housing rights are human rights, everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home.” The ambitious plan promises to tackle everything from homelessness, the shortage of new housing units and repairs to existing units over the next decade, including: Building 100,000 new affordable housing units.

Most of the funding for the plan was already announced in the 2017 budget and will therefore not have any impact on the federal government’s fiscal plan.

The exception is the $4 billion Canada Housing Benefit, which the federal government says will help families by providing an average rent subsidy of $2,500 annually beginning in April 2020 and concluding in 2028.Half of the $4 billion that will be spent by 2028 will come from the provinces and territories with the other half coming from the federal government. The government says the benefit will help support 300,000 households by 2028.

You could pay for transit by the distance you travel instead of by zone under new changes TransLink is proposing to the public. TransLink is asking riders to weigh in on two options, one where rapid transit (including SeaBus) and buses are both distance-based, and another where rapid-transit riders would pay per-kilometre-travelled, but bus riders would be charged a low, flat rate. The changes being considered wouldn’t result in an increase or decrease in revenue, said Andrew Devlin, TransLink manager of policy development. “TransLink has no intention of growing our pot of revenues of fares.”

The changes are being proposed after twothirds of the 43,000 respondents to earlier fare-review surveys said they wanted to ditch the zone system because the boundaries were arbitrary and penalized those who travelled short distances over one or two boundaries. Under the new proposed fare system, those riders will likely see their fares go down, along with those who ride the SeaBus, according to TransLink. For instance, the SkyTrain trip for the four kilometres from Joyce Station to Metrotown Station, now a two-zone fare of $4.10, would drop to $2.20, said Devlin. Those who would pay more would include those who travel long distances within one zone, and those, if the distance-based pricing includes buses, who travel more than five kilometres by bus. All riders would pay a minimum fare for any trip under five kilometres, which TransLink said is the equivalent of three to four stations on rapid transit. It would remain the same as a one-zone fare charged today, $2.20. Devlin wouldn’t provide the percentage of trips under five kilometres, but said that 60 per cent of all trips on transit are 10 km or shorter. And fares would max out at the same amount they do now, meaning no one rider would pay more than the $5.60 three-zone fare they do now, he said. TransLink is also asking for ideas on discounts for frequent users, such as a prepaid pass or paying-asyou-go with a fare cap, an idea that received “strong support” from previous survey respondents, it said. The prepaid pass would provide unlimited trips for a monthly fee, as the monthly pass does now, and the fare cap would allow riders to store value on a card in small increments but receive free trips if they reached a minimum number of trips, for example, per month. That would allow those who couldn’t afford to buy monthly passes volume discounts, said TransLink. Jessica Liang would benefit from distance-based pricing because she lives in Collingwood in Vancouver near the Burnaby boundary and it costs her a two-zone fare to visit her family in Burnaby, one station away. She usually

waits until off-peak times to save the extra fare. “It’s only fair to ask people to pay for the distances they travel,” she said. Krisztina Vasarhelyi, who lives in Port Moody and commutes to Richmond by SkyTrain, bus and the Canada Line, said, “I’m just on the border of the zones. I have to pay three zones based on the zoning system, while on the distance system, it’ll be much more equitable.” Mischa Buza occasionally buses to Langley and experience glitches on the Compass-card system and doubts whether the proposed changes will be fairer. “They just want to charge what they can,” she said, referring to mobility pricing being contemplated by a commission. Gordon Price, a fellow with Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Dialogue, said distance-based pricing may further penalize those who because of housing affordability issues have to live farther from a city’s more expensive core, or, “put another way, provides a benefit (cheaper fares) to those who can afford it.” He also questioned whether the technology for tapping off buses would work, considering that TransLink had problems with the readers and congestion on buses with the Compasscard rollout. And, he said, distance-based pricing for buses leads to the question of why we don’t implement mobility pricing for vehicles on roads. The public can provide feedback until Dec. 8 through an online survey. TransLink will put together a final proposal of changes for one more round of public consultation in the spring before forwarding the recommendations to the TransLink board for a final decision, said Devlin.

Some of the other ideas it looked at were a flat fare for the whole system, which was rejected because it would result in fares increasing by 20 per cent, and a refined zone system, dropped because it was deemed not to be simple or fair. Devlin said the changes, which include a possible per-kilometre incremental charge, which would mean a rider travelling 100 metres would pay the same as someone travelling 999 m, will be finetuned before the final recommendations.

The strategy also includes a promise to introduce new legislation that “will require the federal government to maintain a National Housing Strategy and report to Parliament on housing targets and outcomes.”

A new federal housing advocate will be tasked with advising the federal government and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) of possible solutions to the affordable housing shortage.

The strategy also promises to create a national housing council to help the government keep the national housing strategy on the rails. There will also be a national communications campaign that over a “multiyear” period would help better inform “public views on different housing types and tenures.”

National housing co-investment fund The strategy includes $15.9 billion for a national housing co-investment fund that will provide $4.7 billion in financial contributions and $11.2 billion in low interest loans

to developers that meet certain criteria including ensuring that: 30 per cent of units in a development will rent for less than 80 per cent of median market rents for at least 20 years.

At least a 25 per cent reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions over national building and energy codes.

20 per cent of units meet accessibility standards.

The federal government’s support will not come by way of monetary commitments alone, but will include a $200 million transfer of federal lands to housing providers on condition that they meet environmental, socioeconomic and affordability standards.

This funding envelope will, the government says, help build 60,000 of the promised 100,000 new affordable housing units, repair 240,000 of the 300,000 units in need of renovations, create 7,000 shelter places, 12,000 new affordable units for seniors and another 2,400 affordable units for people with developmental disabilities. Not a day passes without some depressing news from one Muslim country or another. Either it is a terrorist attack in Afghanistan or the Syrian Air Force bombing its own people. Iraq continues to be hit with violence of the most gruesome kind. Mali now joins the list of Muslim countries facing internal turmoil and external intervention. People continue to be killed in Pakistan either in drone attacks by the US or in intersectarian strife. Why?I think no one who reflects on the worsening conditions in the Muslim world can fail to ask these questions: Is this the community envisaged by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was born on 12 Rabi Al-Awwal, and is this the world we would have witnessed if Muslims had proved true to their religion and had lived according to the guidance provided by their Prophet (pbuh) and the teachings of the Holy Qur’an?Muslims may complain of many things but they cannot complain that they have no role model. They have the perfect role model in their Prophet (pbuh).There is no other prophet on whose life so much light has been shed. Living in the full glare of history, his sayings and actions have been documented as no other prophet’s have. Recorded in minute detail, their authenticity has not been questioned by fair-minded scholars and honest historians. It is extremely difficult for the Muslims of today to imagine and much less to endure the hardships that the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions underwent. In the ninth year of his mission, the Prophet (pbuh) — having been persecuted and terrorized by his people in Makkah — headed for Taif, home of the Banu Thaqif tribe. If anything, he was treated even more rudely by the tribal elders, who told him to leave the place and even sent street urchins after him to beat him and pelt him with stones. He bled profusely. His entire body was covered with blood and his sandals became clogged to his feet because of the severity of the beating and

Are we true to the Holy Prophet’s teachings?

torture he was subjected to. Those who would resort to violence at what they perceive to be insults to the Prophet (pbuh) and Islam should realize that he bore no ill will toward his tormentors.

Instead, he made a heartrending invocation to God Almighty beseeching mercy for the people who had persecuted him.

Those Muslims who are intolerant and become violent at the slightest provocation are doing a great disservice to their religion and the principle of tolerance it espouses.

When Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) noticed the continued absence of a woman in Makkah who used to insult him and throw garbage on him as he walked the streets, he asked people about her and visited her after learning that she had fallen ill.

Over 14 centuries have gone by since he left us, but his message still lives on.

It can lead us from darkness to light as it once led the Arabs from backwardness to the heights of success and glory.

His life was one of mercy, compassion, care, consideration, kindness and tolerance for all. His sayings, known as Hadiths, bear testimony to this. One particular theme he was never tired of stressing concerns the rights of women.

You should look at what the Prophet (pbuh) said and did in order to realize what an honorable and respectable position Islam affords women. However, it is sad to see that many Muslims ignore this or behave in a way that gives a very wrong impression about women’s position in an Islamic society. “Fear Allah in respect of women,” the Prophet (pbuh) said. On another occasion he said: “The best of you are they who are best to

their wives.”

Here is another Hadith: “A Muslim must not hate his wife, and if he be displeased with one bad quality in her, let him be pleased with one that is good.”

According to him, “The more civil and kind a Muslim is to his wife, the more perfect in faith he is.”

In what was considered a revolutionary idea at that time, the Prophet (pbuh) taught his companions to remain in their mothers’ service, saying that Paradise lies beneath their feet. Today, we violate the Prophet’s teachings over this and so many other things, which creates so many problems for us and brings a bad name to our religion.

Start with the self-appointed guardians of faith. They preach piety, but are they pious? Do they live by the tenets of Islam? They preach, but do not practice.

What about those who spew hate, abuse and defame others – all in the name of religion? Have they not read about the Prophet’s attitude and behavior toward all those around him including the ones who abused him and tried to kill him?

Do people in authority follow the precepts of the Prophet (pbuh)? If they did, so many Muslim countries would not be in ferment, providing an opportunity for outsiders to intervene in their affairs or to set one section of the people against another. Are our bureaucrats punctual and sincere? Do they cater to the public’s needs? The functioning of government departments throughout the Muslim world in the holy month of Ramadan tells its own story. Most of our problems are self-inflicted. There is no point in crying that enemies are plotting our destruction or hatching

Islm.

conspiracies against us. Of course that is what enemies everywhere have been doing throughout history. The question is whether we should help enemies by our own actions or inaction.

Take, for example, scientific progress and economic development. Muslims once led Europe in science and the pursuit of knowledge. All experts agree that without the Arabic numbering system, which included decimals and the cipher (zero), modern science and business would have been impossible. The first university of Europe was established by Muslims in Spain. From the 8th to the 10th centuries, Baghdad flourished as the world’s most civilized city. Its university was attended by 6,000 students from all over the world.

Aristotle and Plato were rediscovered

by Muslim scholars who translated many Greek manuscripts into Arabic.

Even non-Muslim historians admit that Muslims were the originators of modern chemistry, meteorology, mathematics, sociology and geography. Muslim surgeons were also the first to dissect the human body. The first known telescope was built for a Muslim ruler.

We should remember that we are the followers of a Prophet (pbuh) who said that one should seek knowledge even if it means traveling as far as China. Today, as we stumble through a confused and turbulent world and as uncertainly and depression grip large parts of the Muslim world, we should go back to the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh). This is the only way to get rid of the social ills from which we suffer.

Unfortunately, we say one thing and practice something else. The Holy Qur’an says: “Allah will never change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.” Surah Al-Ra’d - Ayah 11 (13:11). Let us teach ourselves and our children about the life of the Prophet (pbuh) with a firm resolve that we will use it in our daily lives. Let us be more tolerant, more forgiving and show compassion to all people irrespective of their race or religion.

This is the best way to show our love and respect for our Prophet (pbuh).

Around 80K raised for IQRA High School Project in Surrey

On Nov 11, Iqra Islamic School invited its Iqra family of students, parents, alumni and other supporters to raise funds for the high school project, an adjacent property at 96A Ave x 168 St, in Fleetwood, Surrey. The fundraising dinner was held at Bombay Banquet Hall in Surrey.

Iqra is an elementary & junior high School (accredited by the Ministry of Education; BC) and serves more than 425 students. Opening remarks were made by Ammar Malick & Sarah Gamal El-Dean. The program began with beautiful recitation of Holy Quran by Hassan Ahmed and translation by Syed Ibrahim. Following the recitation, Sarah Jassim & Shiffa Yaqub conducted the student presentation program filling it with humor at times. Performance by students from many grades reflected a very high standard of Arabic and Islamic program at the school. A short video by students was also presented highlighting what they like about their school. MLA Bruce Ralston was also invited on the stage and he admired the school’s efforts and contributions to the community. MPs Ken Hardy and Randeep Sarai read the message of Justin Trudeau , Prime Minister of Canada, for Iqra School. Dr. Ali Mihirig(President) updated everyone about the High school project and asked everyone to continue their support.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Munir El Kassem from London (Ontario), a prominent scholar and international speaker. Dr. El Kassem delivered a beautiful speech in the light of Quran and Sunnah and encouraged all the attendees to open their hearts and donate generously for this noble educational cause. He talked about how we become slaves to the materials things in live and forget to seek happiness (pleasure difference also signified) which we wrongly associate with the material possessions. He used his special skills and helped to raise close to $80K at the spot.

Br. Iltaf Sahib elected as the New President of BCMA

November 12th-2017 – The British Columbia Muslim Association elected Iltaf Sahib as the new incoming president.

This year’s election were delayed by two weeks due to some technical interpretations of the BCMA constitution. A resolution was passed by the General Council to allow the election committee to seek legal advice before proceeding with the new elections. Once the advice was obtained from the lawyers, the elections were conducted without much delay.

The elected directors from all the branches of BCMA convene for a general council meeting where nominations are taken from the elected officials before voting for a candidate.

After the Elections the BCMA Election Committee stated, “Br. Iltaf Sahib has been elected as the President of the B.C. Muslim Association for 2017 – 2019 term by the elected directors (men/ women) of the branches and chapters of the Association.”

BCMA presidents serve a two-year term for a maximum of two terms.

Iltaf Sahib has served as a chairperson for the BCMA Surrey East Branch for the last four years.

His succession to the President role was much expected.

Nadeem Shah – the incoming Chairperson of Masjid Rahmah Congratulated Iltaf and stated, with “Iltaf Sahib moving up to take the responsibility for the association, the responsibility have now shifted to me as the new chairman of Masjid Rahmah, I ask you brothers to support me as you have supported brother ILTAF Sahib.”

Br Iltaf accepted the role graciously and said, “Situations unfolded at the meeting and now we are at this point. May Allah guide me and help brother Nadeem Shah to run this masjid even better. Nadeem and the new (old) board is totally capable and professional.

My support is 100% behind Br. Nadeem Shah, Shoaib Rauf and the rest of the Team.”

The chair of the BCMA Board of Trust welcomed the decision and said, “On behalf of the Board of Trust Affairs, I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate Br Iltaf Sahib on his new role as the President Elect of the B.C.Muslim Association. Forget Trump, Trudeau is now the biggest obstacle to Pacific trade deal

While Japan in particular wants a quick deal on the pact that Trump abandoned earlier this year, Canada says more talks are needed on contentious points.

Donald Trump is old news: Justin Trudeau is now seen as the biggest obstacle to sealing a groundbreaking Pacific trade agreement.

Canada’s prime minister has been criticized

by Australian and Japanese media since failing to show for a Nov. 10 summit in Vietnam with the other 10 leaders of countries still involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership. While Japan in particular wants a quick deal on the pact that Trump abandoned earlier this year, Canada says more talks are needed on contentious points.

Canada saw the framework agreement announced in the city of Danang as a sort of pathway for further talks and not a tentative deal, according to a Canadian government official, who asked not to be identified.

Trudeau’s government sees Japan and Australia pressuring Canada in a bid to prevent smaller economies like Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei from pushing for more changes, the official said.

Canada and Mexico cold to U.S. using TPP

to make progress in NAFTA The bickering threatens to further delay a deal in the works for about a decade that was originally seen as a guarantee of U.S. engagement with Asia and a buffer against China’s rising clout. After Trump’s exit, Japan has led a push to complete the deal, agreeing with the other members to suspend 20 sections of the pact partly on the hope that the U.S. will rejoin one day.

Japan wants an agreement as soon as possible, and may look to move ahead without Canada if necessary, the Sankei newspaper reported this week, citing an unidentified negotiator. In an interview with Bloomberg last week, Economy Minister Toshimitsu Motegi urged the remaining members to sign up before some of them face elections next year.

FRENCH SPEAKERS Canada is looking to strengthen a cultural exemption in the agreement that will allow Trudeau’s government to, in part, support language rights of the French-speaking population, a key part of his voter base.

The move suggests the Trudeau government wants the freedom to subsidize and

incentivize French-language and other programming, particularly digital and online Canadian content, without fear of a trade challenge.

Trudeau inherited the TPP from predecessor Stephen Harper and has always stopped short of full-throated support for the pact.

He’s signalled Canada won’t be rushed into a TPP deal, and his government is almost entirely preoccupied by ongoing NAFTA talks with the U.S. and Mexico.

The Canadian government official said there’s a fear that allowing the current TPP wording on cultural exemptions will complicate NAFTA talks further — particularly as Trump threatens to withdraw, as he did with the TPP. The Sankei article indicated that other countries including Japan wouldn’t support changing the cultural exemption — a point that Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kotaro Nogami disputed on Tuesday.

‘GOBSMACKED’ “The proposal has not been rejected at this point,” Nogami said. “We agreed at Danang that the 11 countries should put the TPP into effect, and we are not discussing signing it without one particular country.”

Australian Trade Minister Steve Ciobo earlier this month called Trudeau’s non-appearance at the Vietnam TPP summit a “disappointing development.” That may have cost Canada a chance at being included in the East Asia Summit, an 18-nation group that covers economic and security affairs in the region, the Australian Financial Review reported on Nov. 16.

“Sure, if you were worried about NAFTA and other domestic issues, flag it during the process,” the report quoted a senior official as saying. It added that “delegations and leaders were gobsmacked at their behaviour.”

Liberal’s ICBC deficit is nearly $1 billion – dramatically higher than the $11 million they falsely told people before the election. Even worse, British Columbians are getting stuck with the bill after the B.C. Liberals raided ICBC coffers to pad their own budgets.

Attorney General David Eby revealed Wednesday that the B.C. Liberal’s pre-election claim of a minor $11 million deficit for ICBC was actually closer to a staggering and massive $1 billion loss.

The B.C. Liberal pre-election claim misrepresented the truth by 9000 per cent.

Over several years, the B.C. Liberals also drained $1.2 billion from ICBC coffers in order to pad their own annual budgets.

Then as the election approached, the B.C. Liberals downplayed and hid the truth from voters, claiming things were under control and that they would keep rates low.

In fact, then transportation minister and current B.C. Liberal leadership candidate Todd Stone told people a whopper before the 2017 election, saying, “It has been very clear that we are going to keep rates as affordable as possible.”

But the only thing that’s clear is that this B.C.

Liberal ICBC election deception is looking exactly like their 2013 election hydro deception – when they told people hydro rates might not go up, but then announced a massive hydro rate hike as soon as the ballots were counted.

UTA has successful open house with MPs and provincial Ministers and MLAs

Pressures now lies with elected representatives to report back on progress on December 10 Surrey, BC – The UTA has several hundred members attend an informational session with a number of MPs, provincials Ministers and MLAs over the weekend, where the organizations key issues were outlined.

In spite of several attempts over the past two years, this was the first time that the UTA has been able to gather such a group of elected representatives together in one room.

Trudeau Government Failed to Provide Compassionate Plan for Syrian Refugees: Rempel

Ottawa, ON – the 2017 Fall Reports of the Auditor General of Canada were tabled in the House of Commons, including an examination of whether Syrian refugees received settlement services provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship issued the following statement in response: “This report confirmed an issue we have been raising for over a year; the Liberals have failed to provide a compassionate plan that will ensure Syrian refugees can success-

fully integrate into their new life in Canada.

“The audit shows that not only did the Liberals blow past their campaign promise to spend $250 million to resettle Syrian refugees, the Liberals did so while failing to provide sufficient integration support for Syrian refugees, and simultaneously diverting resources away from other refugee groups.

“The audit also shows that the Liberals failed to communicate with service providers and provinces in a timely manner, which resulted in urgent programming needs going unmet.

“The Auditor General today has reported that the government failed to collect infor-

mation about basic success metrics, such as access to health care and school attendance.

This confirms what the Liberals should know by now; that they can’t use photo ops and feel good tweets as a metric of success when the health and prosperity of human beings are at stake. “It is deeply disturbing that while the Liberal government has failed to provide integration support for Syrian refugees, Justin Trudeau is offering reintegration support for terrorists who took up arms against Canada and our allies. Arab states stand united against ‘unacceptable Iranian aggression’ CAIRO: Arab states stood united on Sunday against Iranian aggression in the region, and Saudi Arabia warned that it would not stand idly by in the face of threats to its national security.

“We are obliged today to take a serious and honest stand … to counter these belligerent policies so that we can protect our security,” Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir told an emergency meeting of Arab League foreign ministers in Cairo.

The ministers expressed their full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and support for any measures it may take to counter Iranian threats, warned Iran to stop interfering in the internal affairs of their countries and end its support for Hezbollah and Houthi militias, and called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss Iranian aggression.

Saudi Arabia asked for Tuesday’s meeting, with the support of the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait, after the launch on Nov. 4 of an Iranian-supplied missile aimed at Riyadh from Houthi militia-held territory in Yemen.

Al-Jubeir said Iran continued to threaten the security of Arab states, violating all interna-

tional principles.

Iranian missiles did not respect sacred Muslim sites in Makkah, he said, and the missile that targeted Riyadh reflected Iranian aggression against the Kingdom and illustrated the “grave dangers in the region due to Iranian interference.”

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the missile that targeted Riyadh was “an Iranian message of aggression which is unacceptable in form and substance.”

He said: “The Iranian missile program poses a dangerous threat to the region and its security. Iranian threats have crossed a line, and they are pushing the region to the brink.

Iran is adopting a sectarian strategy to fuel regional conflicts and is seeking to make Yemen a thorn in the side of Saudi Arabia and the Arab world.”

The secretary-general urged Tehran to “review its policies toward the region and stop its interference.”

Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa said Lebanon was under the “total control” of the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement. “Iran’s biggest arm in the region at the moment is the terrorist

Hezbollah arm,” Sheikh Khalid said, and there was dangerous Iranian escalation in the region.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil did not attend Sunday’s meeting. He was replaced by Lebanon’s delegate to the Arab League, Antoine Azzam. Lebanese sources said there was intense pressure on the League to avoid explicit references to Hezbollah in statements after the meeting, but the efforts failed. Bassil is the son-in-law of Lebanese President Michele Aoun, who is an ally of Hezbollah.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, who is known for his support of Iranianbacked militias such as Hezbollah, was also absent from the meeting; the Undersecretary at Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nizar Khair Allah, attended instead.

Diplomatic sources said the General Secretariat of the Arab League has prepared a dossier of violations, interference and provocative statements by Iran and its officials, along with memorandums from member

states, mainly Saudi Arabia, detailing Iranian interference targeting regional stability.

Arab affairs expert Dr. Moutaz Salama, of Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, said Sunday’s meeting was part of a long-term Saudi strategy which will develop gradually to contain Iran’s destructive role in the region. Rallying Arab diplomatic efforts against Iranian interference was an essential step to move the issue on to the international stage, he said.

Arab diplomatic sources said that there was an agreement between Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, and Bahrain to confront Iranian regional aggression decisively.

Rohingya Muslims Genocide-What Happened to Never Again?

By Ejaz Naqvi, MD Did we really mean “Never Again” after the holocaust? After the World War II, the civilized nations made a commitment to never allow another genocide to happen again.

Unfortunately, we have been witnessing another genocide against the Rohingyan people. Yet the world is mostly silent, specially the world leaders, barring a few.

When there is systematic “ethnic cleansing”, why is it not viewed as genocide?

At the very least, there are serious human right violations. Yet the world leaders remain silent on this human tragedy.

At the annual dinner of my Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County last week, we had one of the Rohingyan teenage girls, Tasmin, make a heartfelt appeal to support her community. She is a foster child of one of the members of the local interfaith women circle. After moving through various countries, she ended up in the USA about a year ago. She is the only one from her family who was able to escape. Her parents and other members are still trapped in Myanmar and facing persecution. Hearing her personal story gave a human face to this genocide.

Definition of Genocide: The Article II of the international Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide states: In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a na-

tional, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Rohingya Muslims Genocide Rohingyans are Indo- Aryan community from Rakhine, Myanmar (formerly named Burma). They are predominantly Muslims, though some are Hindus. They have been living in Burma since the 8th century. They have faced ethnic cleansing for many decades. The current crackdown by the Myanmar military started couple of years ago.

Meanwhile main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who has been receiving cancer treatment in South Africa, returned to Zimbabwe amid suggestions that his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) could form part of a possible transitional government.

And what hasn’t happened?

There has not been any official government

response to events. Nor have we heard directly from President Mugabe or his wife Grace which, according to analysts, suggests they have lost control.

When Mr Mugabe spoke at the university on Friday, he did not make any political comment.And there are no reports of any members of the security forces who remain loyal to Mr Mugabe intervening to defend him.

This is all about the leadership succession, as Mr Mugabe’s powers finally falter.

The people who fought in the 1970s guerrilla war against white minority rule still dominate Zimbabwe’s government, and especially its security forces, and they are worried about losing that power, and the wealth it generates.

Last week, the army chief Gen Chiwenga warned the military could intervene to halt purges of the governing Zanu-PF that were “clearly targeting members of the party with a liberation background”. This was obviously a reference to the sacking last week of Mr Mnangagwa, Mr Mugabe’s once loyal deputy and a former defence minister, spy chief and veteran of the war of independence.

Mrs Mugabe’s supporters are known as “Generation 40” or “G40” - a name which signals a changing of the guard in Zimbabwe, at least partially, 37 years after independence.

So this military action is the old guard reasserting its authority.

he military in Zimbabwe has taken control of the country, putting veteran President Robert Mugabe under house arrest and announcing it was targeting “criminals” around him.

It has denied it is staging a coup, while Mr Mugabe, 93, has been pictured smiling beside army chiefs and left the house for a scheduled appearance on Friday.

However on Sunday, Mr Mugabe was removed as the leader of Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party and ex-vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, who had been fired by Mr Mugabe two weeks before, was appointed in his place.

Military officials had feared Mr Mugabe was planning to install his wife, Grace, as his successor.

So what does this mean for Mr Mugabe and the country he has led since independence in 1980? Here is what we know.

We aspire to alert the world to the stunning medical, scientific and even artistic possibilities of medical imaging, the essential role of the radiologist as a part of the healthcare team in countless medical scenarios, and the high educational and professional standards required of all staff working in medical imaging. Emergency Radiology (ER) has been chosen as the main theme

of this day, to highlight the essential role that radiologists play in emergency room, increasing the quality of care and treatment of patients in need of urgent care.

ER is a sub-speciality within medical imaging which continues to gain significance globally. Emergencies constitute a substantial portion of radiological cases and require efficient and effective handling with correct diagnoses and decisions in a timely manner.

In the majority of hospitals today radiologists are integral members of the emergency unit and are in charge of sequencing, prioritisation and management of imaging services. She did not pester me. She did not order me like how usually children do, I could not do it for some days. She did not scream or harassed me. She asked me politely, “mom can you please do it today? I did it, she thanked me.

Oh my god, I remembered my childhood incident. My mother had finished my sewing project overnight. She was awake 2 o’ clock after finishing all projects. It was cloth-stitch project, my teacher wanted to start it from particular point and as a child in no way I can redo it in few hours. Okay, I did not say thank you like my daughter said, neither my mother expected me too. But I had tears of gratitude in my eyes then till today and will be. My mother had even forgotten that incident as she has done countless such jobs for me and my family.

Then and now, it was not that I did not want to thank her. There was some feeling of being family and duty it was expected, understood and done by family members to do, to help each other through. These magic words were not said loudly, the feeling was still there.

These words were there in the heart deeply yes, in some cases, it was taken granted so in a way, it is good that nowadays, we use these, please, thank you, some words more after, infect very much. These words make you aware of other person’s effect, of doing something for us.

There is a problem Now you will say what is the problem in being polite, good manners? The first problem is that they are often said mechanically. They should not be merely uttered but should be felt

deep in heart too.

So many times when we just talk or interact with the staff in the bank or such public service places even though we have not done any work they say thank you, just for the sake for it, it is good to be polite but things should be really meant. Many times they even do not look in the eyes and say it.

All this politeness is good, teaches us good things but let us not forget that it should be believed in, really thought and felt. It should rather come from within these just mere words or tradition or forced rule.

Duty should not expect reward When mother does something extra or too much, she never thinks that she has done too much. Likewise so many people are so good at doing their duties as if it is part of praying, they do it passionately without expecting even “thank you” or anything in return. When their efforts are acknowledged it is definitely very good gesture and those people will really need rewarded, they will fell nice and more motivated to do so.

Story of life Those days when people had diaries and got mad when someone read it. Now they put everything on Facebook and get mad when people do not read them.

t can be easy to appreciate your strengths - your sense of humor, your generosity, or your analytical skills. And it is also easy to get down on yourself for having various personality traits you perceive as weaknesses - maybe you are quick to anger or always running late. Instead of getting down on yourself for your weaknesses try instead to reframe them as something positive - as traits that make you uniquely you.

•Make a list of all your strengths. Include the big ones that are huge components of your personality, like your patience, all the way down to the small things you are good at. See how many great qualities you contribute to the world!

•Now make a list of all your weaknesses.

Write down things you don’t like about your personality or you feel are negative traits.

•Look at your list of weaknesses. Think about ways you could see those weaknesses as positives. For example, say one of your weaknesses is that you think you talk too much. You could reframe this to a positive as, “It’s easy for me to express my opinion.”

“I’m too sensitive” could be reframed as, “I have empathy for others.”

Stay true to yourself. To appreciate and accept yourself, it is important to know who you are. It may be helpful to identify your personal values. Knowing what is important to you and making decisions based on your personal values helps you be authentic and appreciate your true self. Make sure your values are your own and you are not simply taking on the values of your friends or family.

Figure out what is important to you.

•Explore which values are important to you and write them down. A concrete list of your values may help you recognize when you are being inauthentic to yourself and your values.

•You may feel like other people may not like you if they see the “real” you. It may be helpful for you to explore these feelings with someone you trust or by writing in a journal. Determine when you feel most yourself and when you feel the need to pretend to be

someone else, and explore the differences between those situations.

•If you feel you cannot be yourself around certain friends or family, perhaps because you fear being made fun of, then it may be a sign that you fear rejection about revealing your true self.

•The first step to changing your behavior is noticing when you do it. Pay attention and later, spend some time reflecting on what triggered your behavior in a particular situation. It may take a while for you to feel comfortable enough to be your authentic self around other people. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t do it right away.

Avoid comparisons. Comparing yourself to others can leave you feeling discouraged and judgmental. Remember, you generally see only a piece of others’ everyday lives (particularly on social media). Comparing yourself to someone will only set you up for disappointment and feeling bad about yourself.

•Measure your growth by comparing yourself to who you were in the past instead. For example, think about your life 10 years ago.

Has it changed? Have you acquired new skills, new relationships, or left dysfunctional life patterns behind? If you feel you have stagnated, take some steps to make some positive changes in your life.

•You can also look at your life now and imagine what you would like it to look like five or 10 years in the future. If you dream of getting a promotion at work in a few years, for example, what can you do today to start making progress towards your goals? Working toward a goal can help you to feel more self-worth and in control of your life.

It’s never too later to start living your own dreams!!

The clinical effects of traumatic life experiences can be found in the physical, psychological and spiritual symptoms and concerns of the survivor of mass violence and torture. As most physicians and Dentists have limited cultural knowledge about the patient’s, we are unable to communicate properly with our patients; the biggest thing is the language barrier, where the MFBCS’s ASPIRE Dental Services (“ASPIRE”) do their part by providing the interpreters who also have cultural understanding.

“Abu Bakr, I have become a hypocrite!” “A’udhubillaahi minash shaytaanir rajeem*! Why are you saying this?” Abu Bakar was shocked.

Public degradation can be internalized as shame and fear. Anger, hatred, and a desire for revenge can grow within the hearts and minds of survivors. Humiliation, combined with feelings of impotence and powerlessness, which is often the cause of

depression. Each and every survivor is concerned in his/her therapy with the ongoing issue of social justice.

For resettled refugees, English as a Second Language (ESL) programs (or comparable training in the language of the host country) are an important and powerful tool for communication which our ASPIRE group at the Muslim Food Bank works really hard on educating even the little ones.

These new language skills must be a key component to all the refugees because this will reduce social isolation and empower the patient’s ability to cope in a new environment.

Aside from the physical approach of the Refugees we have again and again seen the neglect of oral hygiene. What we found is that preventive care services—including oral hygiene instruction, toothbrushes, fluoride treatment, good nutrition habits and

tobacco counseling—need to be expanded.

An hour and an hour.”**Hmmm…

“An hour and an hour”?

What does the Prophet (saw) mean by “an hour and an hour”?

This means that we can put aside an ‘hour’ for our heart’s matters and its purification or cleaning process. And we can put aside another ‘hour’ for our dunya* matters or even entertainment.

It does not mean that we can do one hour of good deeds and one hour of bad deeds. For example, we spend one hour listening to an Islamic lecture and we spend one hour at the club or pub, dancing, drinking, singing karaoke or gambling. No! That’s not what the Prophet meant.

What the Prophet meant by the dunya matters was that we have to attend to the necessary and important things that we do for our body, mind and life like eat, drink, go to the bathroom, go to work or school, clean the house, cook, ride the train or car or other vehicle, etc.

As for entertainment, we could perhaps read a book, watch a Halal* movie, play a video game, go for a walk, go shopping, spend quality time with your parents or grandparents, enjoy moments with your siblings or cousins or aunties or uncles, sew, paint, fish, solving puzzles, visit friends, etc… There are numerous other Halal dunya activities and Halal entertainment activities that we can do. Can you name one more?

Don’t you just love Islam? Islam is perfect. It teaches us to be balanced. Alhamdulillah*.

Moral & Afterthought Islam does not prohibit us to do many normal activities. There are many, many things that we can do without getting into trouble with Allah or with the authorities. These activities are actually Halal.

We should not think that going to school or work is actually un-Islamic or a waste of valuable time. Or vacuuming or cooking or sewing is not good as we are not reading the Quran or Hadeeth* books or cleaning the mosque or doing something that is related to Islam. https://storiesformuslimkids.wordpress.com

Celebrations of poet philosopher Dr. Muhammad Iqbal at Surrey City Hall

On November 11th, the Honourable, Consulate General of Pakistan Dr. Muhammad Tariq, and Vice Counsel, Mr. Fahad Ahmad celebrated the legacy of the Dr. Mohammed Iqbal, better known as Allama Iqbal at Surrey City Hall.

The event was with a lineup of scholars and educators reflecting on the life and achievements of Dr. Iqbal.

Vice Counsel, Mr. Amjad welcomes the keynote speakers, Dr. Raminder Kang, Prof.

Anne Murphy, UBC, Dr. Darryl McLean, SFU, and Dr. Syed Taqi Hasan Abidi.

Dr. Kang highlighted the role of Dr. Iqbal’s work and his efforts inspire and educate the humankind to unite, respect, and celebrate our differences through his work. Encouraging to free oneself from the slavery and abandon the racial and religious division.

Prof. Murphy shone the light on the importance of Dr. Iqbal’s work and how nearly after eighty years since his passing Dr. Iqbal continues to inspire modern day western scholars to study him and his work. Prof.

Murphy listed number of scholarly research done on Dr. Iqbal by western scholars.

Dr. McLean shared his understanding of Dr. Iqbal’s work and the use of Arabic language and concepts taken from the Quran to inspire a nation, awakening their collective conscious, through self-awareness.

Dr. Abidi, considered a scholar and an expert on Dr. Iqbal. He has authored of more than sixty books on Dr. Iqbal. Dr. Abidi gave a moving speech, highlighting the importance of Dr. Iqbal’s work, his life, his contribution to the Muslim Ummah from Far-East to far-West and how his work is still relevant today as it was nearly century ago, if the Muslims want to come out of their slumber, and hoping to unshackle themselves from the chains of slavery.

Hon. Dr. Tariq thanked the guests and the speakers for commemorating the life of Dr. Iqbal.

The event was followed by a dinner and classical music program.

140th Allma Iqbal Birthday celebrates by PCCA

On Nov 10, The Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association(PCCA) hosted a celebration to honor the 140th birthday of Sir Allama Mohammad Iqbal, the National Poet of Pakistan at Bhawan Hall in Surrey. PCCA’s women wing played a major role in organizing this successful event in which a large number of families participated . The program included a colourful presentation by Children on Iqbal’s famous poem, “lab pe aati hai dua ban ke tamanna meri”, Mili Nagmas by Ms. Salma Shah, Speeches by kids and adults including Mr. Shams, Jilani, Mr. Mohammad Rafiq, Mr. Naeem Lakhan, Ms. Huma Mir on Iqbaliat, his life and poetry. The final speech was given by PCCA’s president Mr. Farrukh Syed and vote of thanks given by Mr. Naveed Waraich and Mr. Iftikhar Ghumman. Before the cake cutting, Mr. Naseer Pirzada made Duaa for Muslim Ummah and specially Duaa e Maghfarat for Allama Mohammad Iqbal.

Ace boxer Waseem might quit representing Pakistan due to lack of funds, support By:Abdul Ghaffar The unbeaten World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Flyweight Champion, Pakistan’s Muhammad Waseem, has expressed disappointment again over the lack of funds and support, and said he is thinking of accepting offers from other countries and play for them.The country’s ace boxer announced his decision through a video message on Monday, saying he had no sponsors to fund his participation in the international boxing events and represent Pakistan — therefore he was thinking of switching sides.

Waseem, who hails from Quetta, told his fans that his upcoming fight for the WBC title might be the last time he represents Pakistan.“I have an upcoming fight for the world title [in January 2018] and before that I have a fight in Colombia, but I am facing problems as I have no sponsors,” Waseem said in the video. ”I don’t want to stop representing Pakistan but unfortunately I am

stuck,” the boxer added.

He said that after his upcoming fights, he may consider taking the nationality of the United States or South Korea — and represent them instead. He has repeatedly expressed disappointment that the government has not offered him any support despite his achievements.

Waseem, also known as Falcon Khan, said that when he won his first WBC title for Pakistan, the federal government and the Balochistan government had “promised to help him and commit to other financial help”.

He added he feels “extremely disappointed that no one from both governments fulfilled their promise and did not even bother to call him”. Waseem said that in order to move forward as a professional boxer he needed sponsorship. In July, Waseem won the World Boxing Council (WBC) silver flyweight title after defeating favourite Jether Oliva from the Philippines.

He maintained his title in October when he defeated Panama’s Carlos Melo.

Waseem, Pakistan’s only professional boxer, began his professional career in South Korea last year and won the Korean Bantamweight title on debut.

In August last year, Waseem had lamented that Korean promoter Andy Kim had sponsored and borne all his expenses instead of the Pakistani government. “I’m a Pakistani, not Korean; [so] why is my government not providing me with the required patronage?” he had said. However, after Waseem won the WBC Silver Flyweight Championship, the federal government had transferred a sum of money to Kim. Last year, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had approved a grant of Rs30 million for the boxer as he successfully defended his WBC Silver Flyweight title after defeating Giemel Megramo.

The federal government, however, released

only Rs24.675 million in March this year on the recommendation of the Inter-Provincial Coordination Ministry.

In 2014, the then Inspector General of Balochistan Frontier Corps, Maj Gen Ejaz Shahid, had handed a cheque of Rs50,000 to Waseem and gifted boxing equipment and exercise machines worth Rs0.7 million to the international boxer’s club.

VISAFF Showcases Pakistani Movie “Actor in-Law” The 7th Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival this year was celebrated from Nov 16- 19 at City of Surrey Theatre. Ms. Mannu Sandhu is the VISAFF producer whose efforts every year make this event successful in South Asian community. This year’s special guest from film industry was the Indian actress Ms. Huma Qureshi.

This year, with collaboration between Pakistani Canadian women society, Pakistani Film “Actor in Law” was shown in this festival on Nov 17th. The screening was attended by a large number of Paki-

stani Canadian community members as well as other members of the South Asian community who thoroughly enjoyed this light comedy.

“Actor in Law” tells the story of Shan Mirza (Fahad Mustafa), an aspiring actor who is a disappointment to his lawyer father (Om Puri). Thwarted in his acting career, he ends up impersonating a lawyer, using theatrics and over-the-top rhetoric in the courtroom while his father is away on Hajj. He shoots to stardom when reporter Meenu (Mehwish Hayat) captures his courtroom speechifying on film and the two embark on a series of public interest litigations, picking up some powerful enemies on the way. The plot requires a certain suspension of belief; social injustices are painted with a broad brush and facile solutions indicate that this is the stuff of fantasy. The plot gives Qureshi ample room to pull in scenes about societal issues ranging from Eve-teasing to political slogans being painted on walls.

The movie is a solid entertainer, full of in-jokes & conspicuous satire which manages to transcend its predictable plot. In general, Actor in Law is an amusing romp. Nabeel Qureshi Director has delivered another firmly Karachi-centric film, full of familiar landmarks and the energy of the city. It’s not a story that will grip you, but Actor in Law is tremendously funny, beautifully made and enjoyable.
