Why the West grew rich ?

BOUT 1,000 years ago, when Europe was supposedly traversing through its dark ages, the Muslim empire was the envy of the world. Its wealth and material standards were such that Cordoba alone was pronounced as the ‘ornament of the world’ by Hrotsvitha, a mediaeval German writer and nun. By 1500, it was China and India whose riches and wealth became the stuff of fables. By the 17th century, the tide had started turning in favour of northern European nations. By the mid-19th century, this turnaround was complete. What accounts for this transformation?

The literature on this topic, suffice to say, is so vast as to be almost incomprehensible. One can, though, make a general distinction. Some of this literature concerns the question of ‘how’, the other concerns the question ‘why’, with the remaining being a combination of both. In this article, I want to briefly share the findings of two excellent new books on this topic

by Jared Rubin (Rulers, Religion and Riches) and Joel Mokyr (A Culture of Growth), that tackle the question of ‘why’.

Rubin’s book concentrates its analysis on the divergence between the West and the Muslim world (especially the Middle East), and what factors gave rise to disparity in development outcomes. He debunks the idea of ‘backwardness’ of the Islamic faith, which supposedly held back the Muslim world. If that were the case, he argues, there never would have been a wealthy Muslim Spain. In general, he traces the great divergence between the West and the Middle East in the way that religion and govern-

ment interacted over time.

The separation of religion from statecraft set the stage for European ascent.

Before the divergence began, the Christian West and the Muslim East used to derive their authority and legitimacy from religion. The real source of power lay with religious figureheads like the pope, followed by the rulers and their cohorts. Whatever economic activity there was, it was shaped in a way to benefit these entrenched groups.

But then Europe gradually broke away from religion as its source of legitimacy. As the tight bond between religion and state loosened, economic and financial concerns became top priorities.

As nation states like Britain and the Netherlands adopted the parliamentary system of governance, the hold of the entrenched classes started to relax since parliamentary legitimacy required participation of the common man. This participation meant they could now stake a claim in the state’s riches, and also realise it through good policies.

What accentuated this break between religion and the state in Europe? One of the most iconic inventions of history, the printing press! In 1440, Gutenberg invented the printing press, revolutionising the spread of knowledge and ideas. Once restricted to only the church, knowledge now began to spread to all parts of Europe as books and pamphlets became easily available to the public. This, over time, gave rise to a movement (reformation and enlightenment) that gradually withered the grip of papacy and kings.

This 300-year gap, Rubin argues, is one of the most important factors (though not the only one) in explaining the divergence in wealth between the West and the East. At a time when Europe moved towards economic empowerment, technological change and inclusion, the Muslim world’s energies were focused on preserving orthodoxy and exclusion of people from the fruits of knowledge and empowerment.

Mokyr’s book, in contrast, focuses on reformation and enlightenment that drove Europe ahead of others.

Why did these not occur in China or the Muslim world and only in Europe? His narration revolves around the political fragmentation in Europe that beset it in the wake of the rise of nation states.

Political fragmentation gave rise to fierce competition, not just in commerce and trade but also in ideas which spread as innovations like the printing press made their presence felt.

Nation states, as they raced to embrace science and technology, also competed for leading scholars and thinkers. This spawned a culture of openness, not just in science but also in ideas. No longer did it remain possible to repress ideas and criticism since critics could now always find refuge in another state open to ideas and criticism.

This cycle of openness became unstoppable with time, and complemented advances in technology and knowledge. This, argues

Mokyr, explains to a large degree why European nation states were able to leave others behind.

To summarise, for Rubin, the answer lies in legitimacy derived from religion changing to legitimacy derived through people. This was made possible by inventions like the printing press, which tilted the balance in favour of trade, commerce and the people. For Mokyr, the answer is to be found in a cultural change brought on by the rise of nation states, their intense competition in various spheres of life and political fragmentation within Europe. Importantly, a common strand in both these books is to be found in the separation of religion from statecraft which set the stage for European ascent.

The above is but a tiny fraction of the wealth of knowledge available on this particular topic, and in no way does justice to such an important question. Interested readers can access hundreds of books and other material to contemplate this issue, such as the outstanding Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond, or How the West Grew Rich by Nathan Rosenberg. What can be concluded is that there is no single factor that can explain the rise of the West. It’s the coming together of a host of factors that propelled economic growth. What we also know is that almost 500 years since this divergence in Europe’s favour is supposed to have begun, the pendulum is now again swinging towards the East (China and India, for example). Their rise is another interesting story, perhaps worthy of a future column.

Hopefully, Mr. Jagmeet Singh will try and bring the understand-

ing and re-conciliation with Muslims too. Especially, for the most hated tortured Rohingya Muslims and Kashmiri Muslims who are harassed and attacked by the Indian Pagans, who are kidnaping young women off the street and rape them, some women are brutally attacked, pulling off their Hijab and cutting off their Hair.

Is there anything more gruesome brutal treatment than this?

Pakistan tells US to accept defeat in Afghanistan, agrees assistance on equal terms

Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, while briefing the Senate on Wednesday regarding the talks held between Pakistani and American delegations a day earlier, asserted that Islamabad will co-operate with Washington in the ‘war on terror’ but without compromising its own sovereignty.

On Tuesday, a six-member delegation comprising Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership hosted US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for a brief visit to Islamabad.

Asif briefed that the Pakistani leadership told the American delegation that they should allow their policymakers, and not their military leaders, to devise a policy for Afghanistan as the military solution has failed and a political solution is needed.“Their failures over the past 16 years [since the war in Afghanistan started] is before them,” Asif added. ”There will only be room for improvement if Washington accepts their defeat, their failures in Afghanistan,” Asif said on Wednesday. “They are not ready to accept this.”

During the talks, Asif told the Senate, Pakistani officials informed the American delegation that Pakistan does not want any military hardware, economic resources or material gain from Washington. Rather, Pakistan wants a relationship

based on equality with the US. Asif further informed the Senate that the Pakistani side has told the American delegation that if the latter provides actionable intelligence, Pakistan will act on it. He gave the example of the recent rescue of an American-Canadian couple and their three children from terrorists’ captivity in Kohat.

“However, if they want that we act as their proxies to fight their war... this is unacceptable.”

“We will not compromise on our sovereignty, our dignity,” Asif added. “Our relations [with America] should be based on self-respect and dignity.”He said, in contrast, Pakistan, which is not a superpower, has gained successes in the war against terror.“Our country, our military and our police have made sacrifices in the war and in return, we have gained unmatched success.”He said Pakistan would see further success if the Parliament, the National Security Committee and the people of the country send a united message as they had after August 21 when US President Donald Trump announced his South Asia policy and lambasted Pakistan for offering safe havens to “agents of chaos”.

At no stage since the policy announcement, have we succumbed to pressure and on Tuesday, for the first time, the civilian and military leadership of Pakistan sat down with the delegation and presented their input, Asif said.

“At no point during the talks did we adopt an accusatory tone, nor were we apologetic,” the minister told the Senate.

“The institutions of Pakistan will protect the country’s interest,” Asif said.Source: dawn.com

Pakistan tops list of ‘illegal overstayers’after Umrah: report

Pakistan has topped the list of countries with the highest number of illegal overstayers after the 2016-2017 Umrah season, Arab News reported on Tuesday.According to Arab News, the 6,905 pilgrims from Pakistan stayed in Saudi Arabia illegally after the pilgrimage season was over.

Pakistan was followed by Nigeria with 1,629 overstayers and Egypt with 1,081, the daily added.Indonesia, which had the second highest number of overstayers in the 20152016 Umrah season, came in at the fourth place with 592 illegal people. It was followed by Sudan, Arab News said.

According to an article published by the Saudi Gazette in February, Saudi Arabia deported more than 39,000 Pakistanis in the four months prior to the report for “violating the rules of residence and work”.Over 100 Pakistanis were deported by the Gulf state on the charges of overstay in the kingdom in 2015. “Most of them travelled to Saudi Arabia on Umrah visa, but slipped there to find work,” an official had said at the time. Afghan president bans Pakistani trucks from entering Afghanistan

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has issued a decree banning Pakistani trucks from entering the country via the Torkham and Spin Boldak border crossings, ToloNews reported.

The Afghan Transport Ministry confirmed the move on Sunday, saying that trucks would only be allowed up to the border crossings, at which point the trucks will have to offload their goods and transfer them to Afghan trucks, according to ToloNews.

“The Afghanistan and Pakistan Trade Agreement (APTA) has expired. Before this Pakistan did not allow Afghan trucks to enter its territory. So we [will] do the same, and after this Pakistani trucks will be unloaded at borders and Afghan trucks will carry the goods to Hairatan and Shir Khan ports,” Transport Ministry Spokesman Hekmatullah Qawanch said.

It is believed that Ghani’s decree will provide a greater number of job opportunities for truckers and transit companies. “Currently there is no work for transit companies and the drivers are at home,” a director of a transport company, Abdul Ghafoor Norzai, said. ”Pakistani trucks go to every part of our country, but our trucks are not allowed to enter Pakistan. We want the government to do the same to Pakistan and also help us to be allowed to enter neighbouring countries,” said Abdul Rauf, the head of a transport company.The Afghan Transport Ministry said Kabul would sign transit agreements with Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan soon, on the basis of which Afghan trucks would be allowed to enter the three countries, ToloNews reported.

US mulls sanctions on Myanmar Groups slam US states’ crackdown over Rohingya crisis on Israel boycotts

The United States is considering sanctions against Myanmar authorities for its “violent, traumatic abuses” of the majority Muslim Rohingya in restive Rakhine state.

Washington may use a human rights law to target leaders or groups involved in the violence in the western state, the US Department of State said in a statement on Monday. “We express our gravest concern with recent events in Rakhine state and the violent, traumatic abuses Rohingya and other communities have endured,” the statement said. “It is imperative that any individuals or entities responsible for atrocities, including non-state actors and vigilantes, be held accountable.” Since August 25, the Myanmar army has waged a brutal military campaign in Rakhine against the Rohingya. More than 600,000 Rohingya have fled the country, most arriving in Bangladesh by foot or by boat, with aid agencies struggling to cope with the influx. “We are exploring accountability mechanisms available under US law, including Global Magnitsky targeted sanctions,” Heather Nauert, State Department spokesperson, said. Under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, the president can block or revoke the visas of certain foreign individuals and entities or impose property sanctions on them. The US government last imposed sanctions on Myanmar in 1997 when it was under a military dictatorship.

Following a transition towards democracy,

the measures were lifted in October 2016 by then President Barack Obama. Benjamin Zawacki, an independent Southeast Asia analyst, said while the proposed sanctions are far more appropriate, if imposed, they come a month late. “Any preventative element of these sanctions has long passed its sell-by date,” he told Al Jazeera, speaking from Thailand’s capital, Bangkok. “The only thing left now is the punitive element, and it remains to be seen whether they will be felt as such by these generals that have been targeted.” The US also announced that it is withdrawing military assistance to Myanmar officers and units operating in northern Rakhine. Zawacki suggested that an arms embargo would be effective against the military. “If there is, in fact, no punitive effect on these generals, they [sanctions] need to be strengthened and widened by way of military force projection,” he said.

Last week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the US holds Myanmar’s military leadership responsible for its harsh crackdown of the Rohingya. The UN describes the Rohingya as the world’s most persecuted people. The minority group has suffered years of discrimination and have been denied citizenship in Myanmar since 1982. In Monday’s statement, the US urged the safe and voluntary return of those who have fled or been displaced in Rakhine, as well as a “credible path to citizenship”.

The emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, warned of the collapse of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) - an alliance of Gulf countries - should the crisis with Qatar remain unresolved. In a statement at a Kuwaiti parliament session on Tuesday, the emir warned GCC leaders of the potential dangerous military and political intervention that may ensue as a result of the political deadlock. “Contrary to our wishes and hopes, the Gulf crisis has the potential of escalating; therefore, all of us must be fully aware of its potential consequences,” Sheikh Sabah said. “Any escalation will bring with it an outright call for regional and international intervention, which will destroy the security of the Gulf and its people.” The GCC is a political and economic alliance of countries in the Arabian peninsula, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Established in 1981, the alliance fosters economic, security, cultural and social cooperation between the six nations. But the fate of the GCC has been thrown into question as a result of the deep rift caused by a land, air and sea blockade imposed on Qatar by Bahrain, Saudi Ara-

bia, the UAE and Egypt on June 5. Sheikh Sabah stressed that Kuwait’s mediation efforts should be seen through the lens of the family of Gulf nations: “We are not a third party in this crisis. Rather, we are a party of one with the other two brother-nations in this crisis.” The GCC is the only beacon of light and hope amid the darkness now gripping the region, the emir added. He warned that the collapse of the GCC would mean the collapse of the last bastion of joint Arab cooperation, noting that his country’s goal was to resolve the crisis and prevent the GCC from collapse. “History and the future generations of Arabs will not forget those who contributed to the escalation of the conflict and caused the destruction of the Gulf,” Sheikh Sabah cautioned. The countries that imposed the blockade on Qatar claim that it works to support “terrorism”, maintains cordial relations with Iran and meddles in the internal affairs of their countries. But Qatar insists there is “no legitimate justification” for the actions taken by the four nations, calling their decision a “violation of its sovereignty”.

Kuwait emir warns of GCC collapse and crisis escalation

Rights groups and Palestine advocacy organisations have blasted a Maryland executive order that bars state contracts for firms that boycott Israel as part of a “legislative assault” that targets the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. On Monday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed the executive order, which accuses firms that boycott Israel of posing “undue risks as contracting partners”. Surrounded by leaders of pro-Israel groups and Jewish organisations, Hogan addressed a press conference after signing the order. “There is no place in our state for boycotts and threats,” he said, as reported by the Baltimore Sun. At the time of publication, Hogan’s office had not replied to Al Jazeera’s request for comment. Brian Hauss, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), described the governor’s order as “part of a legislative assault we’ve seen over the past few years on the right to boycott”, citing a string of legal measures in states across the US. Speaking to Al Jazeera by telephone, he described the measure as “blatantly unconstitutional”, referring to the US Constitution’s First Amendment, which guarantees the freedom of expression. BDS is a global campaign that was launched in 2005 with the intent of holding Israel accountable for violations of international law and Palestinian human rights. Drawing from the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa, the movement calls for boycotting, divesting from and sanctioning Israel until it ends its decades-long occupation of Arab land, provides Palestinian citizens of Israel with full equality and allows Palestinian refugees to return to their homes. In recent years, the movement has grown in the US, particularly on university and college campuses. In response, pro-Israel organisations have lobbied for measures that target students and state bills alike. Throughout the last two years, at least 22 states have passed laws or implemented executive orders that target BDS activism. “These laws are examples of the state leveraging financial resources to coerce people to move away from political movements the state does not favour,” Hauss said. “Whatever you think about the BDS movement, there is clear evidence of government viewpoint discrimination,” he added. “That’s something that the First Amendment clearly prohibits.” Last week, Dickinson, a city in Texas, posted an application for hurricane relief funds that mandated applicants to sign an agreement promising they will not boycott Israel. The city cited a Texas law that prohibits state agencies from contracting companies that boycott Israel. The move prompted widespread condemnation from rights groups, including the ACLU. In July, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed a law that prohibits state agencies from doing business with companies that engage in BDS. A month earlier, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed HB 2409, a similar law which requires both

state-contracted individuals and companies to provide a written certificate proclaiming that they are not participating in a boycott of Israel. Earlier this month, the ACLU filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Kansas law on behalf of Esther Koontz, a public high school teacher who advocates a consumer boycott of Israeli products and international goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory.

Jack Saltzberg, executive director of the Israel Group, an organisation that lobbies against BDS, argued that anti-BDS legislation has “nothing to do with curbing free speech”. “It is generally legislation that constricts governmental institutions and beneficiaries from divesting from Israel, or at least following certain guidelines,” he told Al Jazeera. “Therefore, when passed by a state, students in that state’s universities can freely say anything they want about Israel, or even vote to divest from Israel.” Rahul Saksena, a staff attorney at the US-based Palestine Legal, said that the wave of anti-BDS laws is designed to intimidate Palestine solidarity activists by creating a “chilling effect”. Speaking to Al Jazeera by telephone, Saksena explained that the host of laws and bills follow in the tradition of anti-Palestinian measures that have targeted student activists in recent years. Those measures include banning advocacy groups like Students for Justice in Palestine and suppressing pro-Palestinian protests and educational activities. In May 2015, Canary Mission, a pro-Israel website, was created to track Palestine solidarity activists and dash their future employment prospects. Since 2015, however, pro-Israel advocacy organisations have increasingly focused their efforts on supporting anti-BDS legislation, according to Saksena. Most of the legislation, he said, has enjoyed the support of both the Republican and Democratic parties. Saksena said efforts to stifle Palestine solidarity activism are evidence that pro-Israel organisations are unable to make their case on moral grounds. “What’s behind [this] is an unwillingness to confront the issue of Palestinian rights on its merits,” he said.

“Instead, they want to silence the conversation.” He added: “Rather than engaging in the conversation and having a debate about human rights abuses and violations of international law, they pour resources into pressuring universities and lawmakers to shut down the conversation.” Earlier this year, the federal Israel Anti-Boycott Act - a bill that seeks to criminalise boycotting Israel - was introduced in both the US House of Representatives and the Senate. Signed by at least 100 civil society groups and human rights organisations, a joint statement published in August called on Congressional legislators to oppose the Israel AntiBoycott Act. Saksena said: “The problem is that boycotts for Palestinian rights, like all boycotts, are protected by constitutional rights.”

Quebec justice minister apologizes Caitlan Coleman breaks silence on captivity, for confusion around new says ‘was in Pakistan for more than a year’ face-covering law Quebec Justice Minister Stéphanie Vallée sought to clarify the province’s controversial face-covering ban on Tuesday, saying the law will only apply when it’s required for communication, identification or security reasons. At a news conference that lasted more than an hour, Vallée explained how the new law will be implemented in specific cases.

She said the law, which pertains to those giving or receiving public services, is not meant to be repressive. “I’m sorry that it wasn’t as clear,” she said. “Maybe what I’m doing today I should have done the day after we adopted the bill.” Bill 62 has been the subject of questions and confusion since it became law last Wednesday in Quebec’s National Assembly. Civil rights advocates have accused the province of targeting Muslim women who wear a niqab or burka, while municipal politicians have said it’s unfair to ask public servants, such as bus drivers or library workers, to enforce the law. On Tuesday, Vallée said a Muslim woman wearing a niqab or burka would only be required to uncover her face to take public transit if a photo ID is required, as in the case of those paying a reduced student fare. The same rules would apply to someone wearing sunglasses and a scarf, she said. As well, an individual would not be required to uncover the face for the duration of the ride on a bus or Metro, she said, in a departure from what she had previously told CBC News.

At public libraries, a person with a covered face is free to roam the stacks and take out a book at the automated kiosk, but would be required to uncover their face to communicate with staff, Vallée said. At a hospital, a person requiring emergency care wouldn’t be turned away because of a face covering, she said.

“People will have to have their face uncov-

ered when they are in direct contact with an employee but when they return for example to the waiting room, they will not be obliged to have their face uncovered,’’ she said. Vallée said the law is in effect and applies across the province. But she also said a Muslim woman wearing a niqab or burka would be eligible for an exemption to the law on religious grounds. There are no sanctions listed in the legislation for those who don’t comply. The guidelines were originally set to be released by next July, after a round of consultations.

But that timeline was moved to Tuesday in attempt to quell uproar over the law. The law has been criticized by the premiers of Ontario and Alberta, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, and citizens, who have held protests to show their opposition. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said governments shouldn’t tell women what they can and cannot wear. But there is support in Quebec for what the law is trying to achieve. According to an Angus Reid poll published before Bill 62 became law, 87 per cent of Quebecers agree with its objectives. The law, Vallée argued, represents a “well-balanced response” to a debate over the reasonable accommodation of minorites that has been ongoing in the province over the past 10 years. She said Quebec is blazing a trail on the question of religious neutrality, as it did when it became the first province to pass doctor-assisted dying legislation.

Chatha , Surrey As a practicing Muslimah living in Canada, I find it unfortunate that a bill such as Bill 62 has been able to find its way into the legislative assembly of one of our provinces. Canada has a legacy of being the epitome of what its like to have the rights and freedom to observe cultures, traditions and religious practices while living in a multicultural society.

Bill 62 was introduced last Wednesday in what is being phrased as an “attempt” at addressing an issue of safety, identification and communication in the public sphere, all of which is baseless and has no concrete foundations as Muslim women have always been compliant when dealing with public services.

Introduction of the bill means Muslim women living in Quebec who wear a Niqab or Burka cannot cover their faces while in public spaces. Muslim women should have equal rights as like any other Canadian citizen and the introduction of this bill deprives Muslim women of their fundamental rights; This bill is an attack on the women who choose to cover themselves and forces them to compromise a part of their faith and by calling it a bill of neutrality, as stated by the government in Quebec, the depth of the impact that this bill is having on the Muslim

women in Quebec is incomprehensible.

By allowing such a bill to succeed, the government is providing another false reason for people to foster hate crime and discriminatory sentiments against Muslim women.

The Canadian charter states that people would be allowed to practice their faith without interference and therefore as Canadian citizens, the affairs of the Muslim women in respect to their apparel and religious practices should be of no concern to the state so long as it is not causing harm to anyone.

There is no purpose of this ban as we have not seen any examples in which Muslim women have not been compliant in communicating or confirming their identity where required.

This is nothing more than creating an issue using a non-issue to win popularity ahead of the 2018 election; this agenda has been pursued for the past 10 years and is no different from what the previous government had attempted at introducing and was recently overturned. Canadian society will not accept this move as it is against the values that Canada stands for.

Muslims must and will fight this bill; we will not allow our fundamental right to practice our religion to be compromised.

Disputing claims about her rescue, the recently recovered Caitlan Coleman has said that she was in Pakistan for at least a year before she was “rescued” by Pakistan Army in an operation near the Pak-Afghan border earlier this month.While speaking to the Toronto Star in her first interview since her recovery, Coleman said: “Right now, everybody’s shunting blame and making claims. Pakistan says no, they were never in Pakistan until the end. The US says, no they were always in Pakistan; it was Pakistan’s responsibility. But neither of those are true.”She also said that she is certain that they were held in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. “We were not crossing into Pakistan that day. We had been in Pakistan for more than a year at that point.”

Coleman, an American national, revealed in the interview — published on Monday — that the couple was moved to Pakistan immediately after being kidnapped in Afghanistan. ”They first took us out of Afghanistan; it was several days’ drive,” said Coleman, who still wears a hijab after being released.

She refused to comment on whether the couple has converted to Islam.

She said that her kidnappers took them to Miramshah in North Waziristan where they were kept for almost a year, adding that they knew where they were because her husband, Joshua Boyle, could understand some Farsi.

“It was very bad. My husband and I were

separated at that time. He wasn’t allowed to see Najaeshi or spend any time with us.”

Najaeshi Jonah is their oldest son.

“Then we were moved to the north of Miramshah, to the house of a man who said he was called Mahmoud. He was very nice to Najaeshi and would provide us with amenities [that] we wouldn’t have otherwise,” she told the Toronto Star. “He would take Najaeshi out to get him sunlight and nobody else did that at any other point.”

She does not exactly remember the events around her rescue but does recall a gun battle while she was in the trunk of a car.

“Our first fear — why we were not poking our heads up and yelling for help — was that it was another gang trying to kidnap us. Possibly just part of the Haqqani network fighting with another part. They’re all just bandits,” she said about her rescue.

“You’re a prisoner for so long, you’re so suspicious. I was still thinking we don’t know these people, we don’t know where they’re taking us.”

Of her reaction on realising it was the Pakistani forces and not another group of captors, she said: “I think I was mostly just in shock.”While revealing details of the rescue, Pakistan Army had said that the family had been moved from Afghanistan into Pakistan the day the operation took place, not earlier.

The share of immigrants in Canada has reached its highest level in almost a century, according to 2016 census figures released Wednesday. The Statistics Canada data also shows the Indigenous population is growing at more than four times the rate of the non-Indigenous population, reaching nearly 1.7 million in 2016. These are some of the findings of the latest data set from the 2016 census, focusing on the population related to immigration, ethnocultural diversity, housing and Indigenous people. The numbers come just days before the annual immigration levels are set to be tabled in the House of Commons by the Liberal government.

The levels were set at 300,000 per year in 2017. The census figures show 21.9 per cent of Canadians report being or having been an immigrant or permanent resident, nearly matching the high of 22.3 per cent in 1921 and up from 19.8 per cent in 2006. The number was slightly higher than 21.9 per cent in 1931 too. Statistics Canada estimates immigrants could represent up to 30 per cent of all Canadians by 2036. The country welcomed 1.2 million new immigrants between 2011 and 2016, with 60.3 per cent of them being admitted as “economic” immigrants — nearly half of those through the skilled workers program. Immigrants are heading to the Prairies in larger numbers, with increases in the share of new immigrants settling in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. While 39 per cent of new immigrants

still head to Ontario, that is down from 55.9 per cent in 2001. “This isn’t just about the economy, but because some provinces are taking advantage of the Provincial and Territorial Nominee Program and using this program to attract immigrants that fit their economic needs,” says René Houle, senior analyst with Statistics Canada. Urban centres in the Prairies have also welcomed disproportionately large numbers of new immigrants. Nevertheless, 56 per cent of them live in and around Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, while these centres are home to just over one-third of all Canadians. More than 60 per cent of new immigrants come from Asia (including the Middle East), by far the largest source. Africa, however, has now surpassed Europe as the second-most important source of new immigrants, increasing to 13.4 per cent. This is largely due to Quebec and its efforts in attracting French-speaking individuals. Nearly half of new immigrants from Africa settled in Quebec. The largest individual source of new immigrants is the Philippines (15.6 per cent), followed by India (12.1 per cent) and China (10.6). Close to three per cent of new immigrants come from the United States, while Canada’s former colonial masters, France and the United Kingdom, combine for four per cent of all new immigrants. In large part due to the influx of refugees, Syria was the seventh most important source of immigrants. It was ranked 50th in 2011. The census shows 7.7

Of relatively recent origin (the 1700’s) it referred to an encompassing vision or set of ideas or abstract thought usually shared by a group, which structured the way they viewed the world. At the heart of the definition was the characteristic that a group’s ideology, as shaped by its leaders and organizers, acted as a filter or lens through which they comprehended other groups, other ideas, and through which they translated reality itself.

The ideology was a construct which structured, in a very definite way, a group’s approach to the world. One component of ideology then, is identity thinking. Another is the sifting and interpretation of all things through the filter of the ideology. And finally, there is the tendency to reject or resist those ideas and groups that do not fit the ideological construct or which offer alternatives to it.

But it’s important to realize that ideologies are human concepts. They are the codification and structuring of a set of ideas into a way of perceiving the world. A religious ideology is no different - it codifies and organizes human interpretation of scriptural teachings and teaches the group to reject or accept based on the codified ideas. Often it makes the derived ideology absolute and sacred and in this way fixes it as part of a permanent, unchangeable belief structure.

Through this it also locks down human thought within the limits and boundaries of the ideology.

“We have made each group’s own tenets alluring to them. In the end will they return to their Lord, and We shall then tell them the truth of all that they did.” (Qur’an 6:108) By it’s nature an ideological approach is a reductionist approach since the wide sweeping panorama of reality is reduced to fit a set ideological directions. The ideology becomes the filter through which reality is viewed and it reduces vastly complex interactions to simplified statements and judgments that are more reflective of the mental state of the one who holds the ideology than the actual state of affairs. Yet ideology is attractive since it simplifies decision making and analysis - it reduces or eliminates the mental and spiritual effort involved in understanding and interacting

with a complex world. It provides a set of superficial procedures which grind up information and re-form the resulting paste by pouring it into a preset ideological mold.

A process like this works well for the ideology since it redirects the critical mental and intellectual abilities of adherents into an efficient process for re-purposing data to support and defend the ideology’s outlook and away from examining the ideology’s own assumptions, motivations, and limitations.

This type of ideology and ideological approaches can be said to be more connected to will and power than to depth and breadth of knowledge. In other words, ideology trumps knowledge. It reshapes, rejects, accepts, and even manufactures “knowledge” (as propaganda) according to the goals (will) of the ideology and in seeking its own preservation and power.

Reality is vast, unlimited, and profoundly deep. However, ideological propositions tend to overshadow the deep metaphysical aspects of religion as they promote a particular viewpoint through a specific lens which filters out those aspects of reality that do not correspond or support the ideology. They elevate this limited viewpoint to the level of an un-opposable truth. Ideologies attempt to lift themselves by their bootstraps to take over the sacred space that is traditionally reserved for understanding the fundamental nature of reality. Thus they take relative interpretations, constructed views, and inflate them to an uncompromising form of doctrine. It ties these exaggerated views to an emotional and highly politicized narrative that often operates according to the rules of propaganda - rules which prevent the deep intellectual reflection revelation or religion itself requires.

“Since mankind seeks to come near to their Creator through all kinds of piety, bring yourself close to Him through the profound activity of the intellect (aql), so that you may arrive there with a proximity (and depth of understanding) that surpasses all of them.” (hadith) While it seems to uphold and defend religion, an overbearing ideological approach undermines the deepest and most profound aspects of religion. It binds men to specific ways of filtering and judging reality instead of doing what religion is meant to do - to bind men to God and thus unfold for them a clear insight to reality. An insight that is necessary if society is to apply revelation to one’s era in the most beneficial way possible - an insight that promotes the growth of knowledge across all fields, that leads to spiritual depth, and a connected humanity.

requires a voluntary intellectual capitulation - it takes a relative, limited, template and cuts reality down to size, and men’s intellects are likewise cut down to size to fit within the shape and borders of the template. This manifests in a close-minded narrowness which hinders growth and human potential. In this way the metaphysical heights which the human soul was designed to scale are forsaken and men wander in the maze of walls which their constructed ideology represents as the only way to view reality. Ideologies in our times arise as rapidly as weeds in an untended garden - a trend originally hastened on by the discarding of very profound religious intellectual sciences in favor of more superficial fundamentalist approaches. It was greatly accelerated by the rapid rise of a world in which metaphysics and philosophy began to be considered, at best, as irrelevant or counterproductive to the aims of humanity, and by the corresponding rise of numerous secular, economic, social, political, and religious ideologies - each of which provided very specific templates through which the world was to be viewed.

A religious ideology is vastly different than a religious intellectual framework which can arise from contemplation of principles which are in turn derived from glimpses of metaphysical realities. An intellectual framework for religion retains the flexibility and malleability of a living philosophy and an active, continually contemplative intellect. It lacks the harsh, mechanical, restrictive nature of an ideological forge which attempts to manufacture men’s thoughts according to a pre-cast mold asking them to give the deepest part of their selves over to the ideology - abandoning reflection and contemplation and intellectual effort in favor of zealous indoctrination on behalf of the ideology.

Those whose actions arise from truly profound readings of the Qur’an are, in every age, in the minority. Those who play at politics or play with ideological interpretations of religion are in vast abundance.

where different power groups begin to use religion as a tool to propagandize their views and to recruit the support of the religious-minded in support of their goals and against the goals of others. Caught in between this clash of ideologies are many who stand confused - without firm knowledge we are sometimes swayed this way, sometimes that - wavering like palm fronds in a shifting breeze.

Indeed I have come upon those who are not faithful to it - who took it hastily and did not imbibe and protect it (they sought it superficially, for their own ends). Such people seek to use the tools of religion for (advancement of their goals) in this world. They use the devices of belief as a means of attaining domination (and power) over God’s friends (through the authority of religion).” (Ali ibn abu Talib Nahjul Balagha) Whether we adhere to a religious tradition or a secular one, it is possible to fall prey to the allure of raising political ideology (and doctrine based on that ideology) to a position and level that is hierarchically above the truths encoded into the source documents of the tradition. Such a situation is most likely to materialize when politics and struggles for power, hegemonic contests for expansion of spheres of influence and control of resources is entwined with concurrent conflicts between different traditions, cultures, or sects. When this occurs it is likely that, in the absence of widespread and deep knowledge of the source-books of religion, these same books will become simply a mechanism used to lend emotional weight and substance to ideological politics. Then religion becomes something that is played with, a football kicked across ideological fields in an attempt to score points in, what is at heart, a very worldly game. “and leave those who use their religion for (worldly) play....” (Qur’an 6:70) The clash of ideologies unravels the threads of unity spoken of in the Qur’an, so that ideologues are busy unraveling the rope of God. And hold fast to the rope of Allah, all of you together, and be not divided; and remember Allah’s favor on you.” (Qur’an 3:103) Ideologues are those who have unraveled the rope and then imagine that the single strand they hang onto is sufficient for them - they imagine that their one fragile strand is the entirety of religion and rob themselves of the true richness to be found in the Qur’an and in reality itself. http://www.islamicity.org

17TH Muslim Youth Centre Fundraiser For our Youth By: Ms. Rabia Waraich The Muslim Youth Centre (MYC) held its 17th Annual Fundraising Dinner on October 14, 2017 at Crystal Banquet Hall. It was a wonderful evening for the adults, youth and children. Br. Kareem Husain started the evening with a warm welcome. The beautiful Quran recitation and translation were done by Br. Mostafa Hedayat.

The MC was Br. Ahmed Salih. The children had fun taking part in the knowledge game and winning Islamic gifts. Furthermore, a Video Presentation showcased the diverse activities in the Centre; from Islamic Studies to Food Festivals to Kids Fun Day to International Bazaars to Self Defense Classes.

A highlight of the evening was the Self Defense Demonstration led by Certified Black Belt Instructors Br. Adam Ishmail and Sr. Alia Ishmail.

The talented Youth practiced immensely to put on a great show for their parents and peers. The demonstration showed great techniques of taekwondo from breaking boards to high jump kicks.

Sheikh Riad Ouarzazi gave a wonderful speech on inspiring and motivating them to be good to their parents and excellent citizens in our community. He led the discussion into the fundraising portion. The MYC raised over $30,000. Honorable Mr. Harry Bains, MLA; Honourable Ms. Rachna Singh, MLA; and Honourable Mr. Sukh Dhaliwal, MP gave heartfelt speeches thanking MYC for their hard work, commitment to the community and empowering the Youth.

The Muslim Youth Centre recognized many people in our community who have dedicated their

time, knowledge and finances to the well-being of our community. These individuals primary objective is to support and protect the future generations – our precious Youth. Br. Kareem presented them with a Letter of Appreciation.

The enjoyable evening was completed with the free IPAD giveaway. Through a Price is Right style game Sister Rawia Ali won the IPAD! Congratulations to her and her family. The evening was concluded by a lively auction done by Dr. Irfan Sheikh. Thank you to all the individuals who participated in the auction and took home the beautiful items. Also, thank you to all the vendors, sponsors, donors, and the audience who made the event a great success.

Islam & Muslims: Peace, War or Terror?

Abdul Muqsit Faruqi, Director, Kamloops Islamic Association This was the topic of an event held at the Grand Hall in TRU on Saturday, October 14th 2017. The event,which drew in a crowd of 258, was hosted and organized by the Kamloops Islamic Association (KIA) inpartnership with Islam Unravelled and supported by TRU. Given the plethora of negative news regarding Islam and Muslims circulating the media these days, there is an immense need for educating Canadians regarding these topics. It is this need that led KIA to invite Mufti Aasim Rashid from Vancouver to speak on this extremely relevant topic.

It has never been more crucial to be educated and informed for the betterment of our society through education, cooperation, networking,and programs which benefit all Canadians alike; Muslims and Non-Muslims.Planning began in mid-August and all the Directors at KIA, worked tirelessly to bring this program to fruition.

From securing the venue at TRU, arranging for refreshments and setting up registration, to developing program process charts, a media and marketing strategy, implementation plans and defining roles and responsibilities, the organizers had their plates full in the lead up to the event. Arranging foradditional volunteers for the event and providing training was also part of the event planning.

On October 14, the event kicked off with a Jeopardy style trivia regarding Islam and Muslims, to keep the audience engaged as people checked in. Faisal Siddiqui, President of Kamloops Islamic Association, took the stage to officially begin the program, acknowledging the territory of the Kamloops Indian Band,partnership with Islam Unravelled, support from TRU and participation of Interfaith Kamloops Group andthe general public.This was followed by the recitation of a few verses from the Holy Quran, after which Tony Larue of Kamloops Indian Band took to the stage to perform a traditional song and prayer.

Dean of Students at TRU, Christine Adam then took the stage to thank Kamloops Islamic Association for organizing the event.

Adam also took the opportunity to mention the support of Kamloops IslamicAssociation during the BC Wildfires evacuations when hundreds of evacuees were sheltered at TRU from the interior.

‘The very first call of support that came in, was from the Kamloops Islamic Association’, said Adam.Siddiqui then set the tone for the event, by outlining its expected outcome; that attendees entered the hall with sincere intentions and open minds and hopefully at the end of the program, left with betterunderstanding, love, peace, trust, respect and a sense of belonging to one society.

Vancouver based Islamic Scholar, Mufti Aasim Rashid was then introduced by Siddiqui and called on stage.On taking the stage, Mufti Aasim began the lecture by outlining his personal experiences growing up inCanada as a Muslim and the challenges that came with the territory. As he took the audience through his personal journey, he weaved in some of the pressing issues of today involving Islam and Muslims.

Among the topics he mentioned were worldwide demands for all Muslims to denounce terror attacks, the reasons behind the way Muslims dress, how radical extremists have nothing to do with the true teachings of Islam, and how islamophobes and extremists have one thing in common; hatred for the ‘other’.As he eloquently articulated points relevant to Canadians today, Mufti Aasim effectively utilized humor to relate to the audience. By touching on significant events in the Middle East, demands for Sharia Law and its associated penal codes in the West among other issues, Mufti Aasim addressed most of the questionsattendees had in their minds.

Those who needed more clarity raised their hands for volunteers on the floor to provide them with a formso their questions could be written down. These were handed over to Mufti Aasim at the end of his speech and he

answered and explained specific questions regarding rights of women in Islam, why youth radicalization occurs, female organ mutilation, jihad and hijab.

KIA and Islam Unravelled had one aim in mind when putting it all together; to clear up misconceptions about Islam and give people a chance to learn about the religion from people who actually follow it and provide answers through a reliable and referenced source. The lecture and Q&A session culminated in astanding ovation from the audience, who then mingled and reflected on what they had learnt overrefreshments.

By: Suadad Al-Salhy BAGHDAD: The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Monday issued arrest warrants for 11 Iraqis, including federal lawmakers and senior commanders of Shiitedominated paramilitary forces, for “insulting the public authority,” Kurdish officials said. Qais Khazali, commander of Asa’ib Ahl Al-Haq, one of the most prominent Iraqi Shiite paramilitary forces fighting Daesh, is among those named in the warrants.

“The arrest warrants have no political or legal force,” Naiem Al-Abodi, spokesman for Asa’ib Ahl Al-Haq, told Arab News. They reflect KRG President Masoud Barzani’s “hysteria after the great losses he suffered.”

In response to the KRG’s independence referendum last month, Baghdad last week launched a military campaign to drive Kurdish forces out of the northern city of Kirkuk, its lucrative oil fields and all disputed areas next to Iraqi Kurdistan’s borders.

The KRG has taken advantage of the weakness of Iraqi federal governments formed since 2003 in order to gradually extend the region’s borders and to seize most of the disputed areas including Kirkuk and its oil fields.Baghdad’s military campaign has achieved almost all its objectives, and troops have stopped at Iraqi Kurdistan’s borders.

The Security Council of Kurdistan on Monday said Baghdad has sent reinforcements,

including tanks and armored vehicles, to the region. “No signs suggest that Iraq will end the military operation,” the council said in a statement.A senior military officer involved in the operation told Arab News on condition of anonymity: “We’ve said we have no intention of going into the (Kurdish) region.

Our orders direct us to regain control of all disputed areas, secure them in order to let people resume their normal lives, and help those who were displaced by the KRG to return home.”He added: “We haven’t sent additional troops, but we’ve increased the number of troops in western Mosul in order to secure the oil pipelines in the area.”

Federal officials have told Arab News that the aim is to reach the Turkish border in order to open a new crossing.

To achieve this, Baghdad has to gain control of the Habur border crossing, which is 7 km inside the border of Iraqi Kurdistan, they said.“We won’t cross the region’s border, but the authority of the federal government has to be imposed on the crossing,” a senior Iraqi official told Arab News on condition of anonymity.

In addition to the military campaign, Baghdad has banned international flights to and from Iraqi Kurdistan, stopped financial transactions with the region, rehabilitated oil pipelines between Kirkuk and Ceyhan port in Turkey in order to bypass Kurdistan,

and established a joint operations room with Turkey and Iran.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi, will visit Turkey on Wednesday to discuss the two countries’ “joint interests,” his office said.Iran shut down its three official border crossings with Iraqi Kurdistan last week.

Ankara is working with Baghdad to open a new crossing outside Iraqi Kurdistan in preparation for shutting Turkey’s crossings with the region.

KRG Prime Minister Nichervan Barzani said the regional government is ready to start “serious talks” with Baghdad based on Iraq’s constitution.

“We’re waiting for Baghdad’s response…

It’s not clear when a delegation from the region will visit Baghdad,” he said on Monday.On Saturday, the federal Integrity Commission issued an arrest warrant for Baker Zebari, former chief of staff of the Iraqi Army and a prominent Kurdish leader, on charges of “damage to public funds.”

Last week, Zebari appeared on Kurdish television wearing a Kurdish military uniform, standing among Kurdish troops and threatening to fight federal forces.

By: AFP TEHRAN: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday Iran’s position in the Middle East had never been stronger but that the regime was at risk unless infighting between political factions was curbed.

“The greatness of the nation of Iran in the region is more than at any other time,” Rouhani said in a speech in Tehran, carried by the state broadcaster.

Rouhani did not directly respond to comments on Sunday by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who called on Iran-backed forces fighting militants in Iraq to “go home.”But despite its powerful position in

the region, Rouhani said Iran’s regime was under threat from fierce infighting between conservatives and moderates at home.

“We should not think that damaging one part of the system will strengthen the other part. No, the whole system will collapse,” he said. There has been renewed criticism from hard-liners over the nuclear deal Rouhani’s administration signed with world powers.

On Sunday, state television read out in its entirety a letter by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei from 2015 in which he warned against trusting the US and other signatories to the deal.

Trudeau meets with officer hurt in Edmonton terror attack

by HANA MAE NASSAR AND THE CANADIAN PRESS EDMONTON (NEWS 1130) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is marking his first visit to Alberta since the Edmonton terror attacks last month.

In the province for a meeting of Canada’s health ministers, Trudeau spent some time with one of the people hurt in the attacks –an Edmonton police officer.

“It was an extraordinary opportunity to sit down with Cst. Chernyk, with Mike, to hear about his experience, and mostly to be able to thank him,” Trudeau said to reporters Saturday. “On the morning after the attack I was, like so many Ca-

nadians, watching online in disbelief of the footage of him being flung across the road and then viciously attacked.”

He says the whole ordeal is a testament to Chernyk’s strength, as well as his training.

“And just the excellence of first responders right across this country, that he was able to keep a cool head in the most chaotic and violent of circumstances, and keep Canadians safe.”

Chernyk, who returned to work yesterday, had been handling crowd control at a Canadian Football League game at Commonwealth Stadium when he was hit by a speeding car that rammed

through a barrier and sent him flying five metres through the air.

The driver then got out, pulled out a large knife and began stabbing the 10year veteran, who fought back as he was lying on the ground.

30-year-old Abdulahi Hasan Sharif faces five counts of attempted murder, five counts of dangerous driving and one weapons-related charge. He is set to make another court appearance next month.

As our cities grew, the B.C. Liberals put steep tolls on key commuter bridges and ignored transit users. We eliminated tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears Bridges and put money back into the pockets of commuters and families.

The B.C. Liberal government doubled MSP fees that hard-working British Columbians pay, costing most families an extra $900 a

year. Our government cut MSP premiums by 50 per cent, and we’re working towards completely eliminating this unfair tax.

Under the previous government, income assistance rates were frozen for 10 years. We increased income assistance and disability payments by $100 per month and earning exemptions for people on disability by $200 per month.

To help people access the basic education and skills they need to improve their lives, we eliminated tuition fees for Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning programs And as a first step towards making housing affordable, we invested $208 million for the construction of over 1,700 new units of affordable rental housing and $291 million to support the construction of 2,000 modular housing units for people who are homeless.

We’re also focussed on creating good jobs and a strong, sustainable, and innovative economy that puts people first. To support small businesses, we lowered the small business tax rate from 2.5 per cent to 2 per cent.

To help make sure B.C. workers have the skills they need for good jobs in the growing economy, our government created 562 additional seats at 13 public post-secondary institutions throughout British Columbia

that offer foundation and apprenticeship programs.

Instead of focusing on one sector to create jobs, we’re working to strengthen traditional industries like forestry and mining, while supporting small business, tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, technology and innovation.

And to support B.C.’s lowest-waged workers, we increased the hourly minimum wage to $11.35 an hour and established a fair-wage commission to work towards a $15-an-hour minimum wage in B.C. It’s time for B.C. to work for everyone, not just the few at the top. That includes improving the services people count on and building a better B.C. for everyone.

We’re making sure students get the quality public education they need to succeed, families get health care faster, and seniors can live out their final years with dignity.

As a first step to undo 16 years of neglect, we increased funding by $681-million for our kindergarten-to-Grade 12 education system over three years. We’re tackling gangs and gun violence and improving access to youthgang prevention.

Our government has taken province-wide action to stem the overdose emergency and help save lives, including establishing a standalone Ministry for Mental Health and Ad-

dictions.

We’re supporting people, communities and businesses affected by the wildfires, standing up for B.C.’s interests in the face of Kinder Morgan while tackling the challenges of climate change and protecting B.C.’s environment.

We’ve also made reconciliation with Indigenous peoples a cross-government priority, introduced legislation to ban big money from B.C. politics once and for all, and we’ve restored the B.C. Human rights commission.

OTTAWA – Conservative Shadow Ministers today joined Diabetes Canada to demand

that Justin Trudeau cancel his latest tax grab, this time targeting vulnerable Canadians living with diabetes. Conservatives recently learned that the Canada Revenue Agency has been denying diabetics’ applications for the Disability Tax Credit, even when their doctors have certified that they are eligible under the law, resulting in them paying thousands of dollars more in taxes. In addition, diabetics risk losing funds already built up in their Registered Disability Savings Plans, because the CRA no longer considers them to be disabled.

Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance Pierre Poilievre said: “Justin Trudeau is running out of other people’s money. His hunt for more continues. First, he targeted local businesses. Then his tax department tried to tax the employee discounts of waitresses and cashiers. Now his government is targeting vulnerable people suffering with diabetes with thousands of dollars in tax increases.

Our message to him is simple: follow the

law and respect the certifications of doctors, which prove these people qualify under the rules.” Conservative Shadow Minister for National Revenue Pat Kelly said: “This government is trying to raise additional tax revenue at the expense of diabetics. This is part of an alarming trend from a government increasingly desperate to raise revenue to fund its out-of-control spending. While the Finance Minister uses complex corporate structures to shelter his personal wealth, this government is rejecting Disability Tax Credit claims from diabetics.”

Conservative Shadow Minister for Small Business Dan Albas said: “All we are asking is for the government to respect the law, which allows people who require 14 hours or more of life sustaining therapy to access the tax credit. The Liberals are ignoring the law and denying people a tax credit that doctors have certified they are eligible to receive.

Conservatives will continue to fight Justin Trudeau’s tax hikes every step of the way.”

The Disability Tax Credit reduces the tax burden of people with Type One Diabetes and others with disabilities. Under the law, they have been eligible to receive it for the last ten years as long as a doctor certified that they required life sustaining therapy at least three times each week for a total of 14 hours, on average. Yet, the government is now taking the tax credit away from diabetics even when doctors certify they are eligible under the existing law and policy, neither of which has changed. This new direction appears to have happened secretly, with no public notice or consultation with the diabetes community.

A quarter-million Canadians suffer from Type One Diabetes. Most require a halfdozen blood tests a day and regular insulin treatments. Failing to keep up these treatments can result in comas, amputations, heart disease or even death. Devices required for these treatments costs as much as $15,000/year to patients.

The Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society, created in 2007 with capital from the City’s Affordable Housing Reserve Fund, has recently announced the allocation of $1 million for innovative housing project proposals. In the recent budget update, the provincial government has announced new funding for both affordable rental and supportive housing and the City is actively working with the Province to secure urgently required supportive housing units for those most in need. Additionally, the federal government’s expected fall launch of a National Housing Strategy (NHS) is a once in a generation opportunity to transform affordable housing in Canada.

“Safe, affordable housing is the bedrock of the liveable, competitive cities we aspire

to build. Yet, a million and half Canadian households can’t access a decent home they can afford and some 235,000 will experience homelessness this year. Housing has become less affordable at virtually every income level,” said Mayor Hepner a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Big City Mayors’ Caucus (BCMC).

The BCMC has laid out detailed solutions to Canada’s affordable housing crisis in their submission to the federal government: National Housing Strategy: Getting it Right, which calls for Ottawa to prioritize repairing and building new affordable and social housing and to leverage local innovation to ensure long-term sustainability.

“The federal government is listening and have responded in Budget 2017 with a pledge of $15 billion for the NHS. Getting the Strategy right is the critical next step.

And while our suggestions are extensive, our core recommendations comes down to common sense,” added Mayor Hepner.

The federal agreements that developed much of Canada’s 600,000 social housing homes didn’t adequately account for longterm repairs, and today’s non-profit providers generally lack the revenue to support financing to get them done. In Surrey’s case, the City did not significantly benefit from the nation-wide federal investments in social housing that ended in the early 1990s, prior to Surrey’s transformation into a major urban centre. In the last 25 years, the population has more than doubled and continues to expand at a rapid rate. There is a pressing need for new social and affordable housing stock in Surrey, and in Metro Vancouver.

region.

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart says the Metro Vancouver Council of Councils meeting has covered a wide range of issues, including a timely look at future storm drain and sewer upgrades.

“Let’s face it, the climate is changing and we’re expecting to continue to receive more unusual weather events, more extreme weather events over the course of a year,” Stewart says.

“Every community, I think, is trying to make their communities more resilient to those kinds of extreme weather events and that’s one of the challenges we’re dealing with, even today with Metro Vancouver mayors and

councillors.

“Trying to make sure our community storm drains and sewer systems and water systems are resilient to the changing climate that we all have to adapt to.”

North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto says it’s about infrastructure, but also having the right plans and procedures.

“Councils will be looking at policies. Do we have the right policies set up for a rain event such as this, and so I think that’s something that’s ongoing with every municipal council and with Metro Vancouver.”

North Vancouver is typically one of the areas hardest hit by storms in our region.

“With climate change we’re getting more than

all orders of government, to ensure we get it right,” said Mayor Hepner.

Depending on your location, forecasters say 50 to 70 millimetres of rain is expected in parts of the region.

This Is How Climate Change Will Shift the World’s Cities

By Brian Kahn ummers around the world are already warmer than they used to be, and they’re going to get dramatically hotter by century’s end if carbon pollution continues to rise. That problem will be felt most acutely in cities.

The world’s rapidly growing population coupled with the urban heat island effect — which can make cities up to 14°F (7.8°C) warmer than their leafy, rural counterparts — add up to a recipe for dangerous and potentially deadly heat.

Currently, about 54 percent of the world’s population lives in cities, and by 2050 the urban population is expected to grow by 2.5 billion people. As those cities get hotter, weather patterns may shift and make extreme heat even more common. That will in turn threaten public health and the economy. p to a dozen cities will heat up so much, their summers will have no analog currently on Earth. Khartoum, Sudan’s average summer temperature is projected to skyrocket to 111.4°F (44.1°C) if carbon pollution continues unchecked. That includes multitudes of U.S. cities committing to meet the Paris Agreement goals after President Trump announced he was pulling the U.S. from the pact, and even more ambitious moves like Oslo’s pledge to nearly zero its emissions by 2030.

Hon. Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussein, visits Surrey to discuss Bill C-6

By Shahrukh Naseer Ahmed Hussen, Minister of IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship) was amongst the several members of the Members of Parliament present at Maharaja Restaurant Surrey on Oct,13, in order to address the predominantly South Asian Media.

The purpose of the Minister visit was to reveal the changes made in Canada’s Citizenship Act as a result of Bill C-6. The minister stated that the Bill purpose is to eliminate any needless obstacles to citizenship for Canadians. The notable changes, which has come into effect since Oct, 11, 2017, include: Applicants must be physically present in Canada for three out of five years before applying for citizenship, instead of previous four out of six years.

• Applicants no longer have to be physically present in Canada for 183 consecutive days in four out of the six years preceding their application, so they can now travel for things such as work or education.

Applicants may count each day they were physically present in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident as a half-day toward meeting the physical presence requirement for citizenship, up to a maximum credit of 365 days Applicants between 18 and 54 years must meet the language and knowledge requirements for citizenship instead of the previous 14 to 64-year-old age range • Applicants must file Canadian income taxes, if required to do so under the Income Tax Act, for three out of five years, matching the new physical presence requirement. .The Minister also took questions from the audience and addressed some of the concerns in reference to Government financial assistance to Syrian Refugees. The Minister reaffirmed Canadians that the assistance provided is only for 1 year and is in place to assist the temporary settlement of the Migrants to Canada. After this period, the Refugees are expected, and in most cases, become a productive part of the Canadian Economy and culture, such as the Honorable Minister himself.

The Minister also mentioned the achievements of the Liberal Government in the past two years of government in which the there has been significant reduction in processing duration of Spousal immigration, in order to ensure Canadian families are united at the earliest. The Minister said: “together with the members of parliament in our government we have been able to do more in immigration system in less than two years of our government than the last government was able to do in 10 years”. Honorable Minister Ahmed Hussein expressed the importance and continuous need for Immigration in Canada as he stated “We need more tourists, businessmen and international students to come to Canada.”

The Minister also took the time to discuss with Miracle Media some of the important concerns facing the Islamic community in Canada in reference to the rise of Islamophobia, which have gained popularity in the mainstream in the past few years not only in Europe and USA but amongst Canada as well and the solution that. The Minister suggested that it is important for Muslims to become more engaged in “leadership” roles in order to improve the image of Islam and Muslims in Canada and to show the constructive, productive and positive attributes of the Islamic Community. I also spoke to the others MPs present at the event who echoed the Minister opinion continued open and balanced Immigration in Canada in the future. “We have been able to eliminate 20 thousand cases from the spousal backlog. There have been significant changes in the amount of processing time that the application would take in the time of Harper’s government,” Hussen told South Asian media on Friday.

According to Hussen, they have been able to decrease the processing time for most applications by more than double, some of which are: · The waiting period for citizenship acquisition · Renewal of Permanent Resident card in 52 days from 10-18 months · Visa approval rate of 69% from 40%in Chandigarh, India Spousal applications from 26 months to under 12 months.

The minister said, he continued to engage himself with the visa offices to make sure genuine travelers are not denied entry into Canada.

Speaking of the recent changes to Bill C-6, Hussen said, “together with the members of parliament in

immigration system in less than two years of our government than the last government was able to do in 10 years” “Canadians welcome people from all over the world”. He Said Surrey as an example of the cities that received more Syrian-refugees in the last 2 years.“We need more tourists, businessmen and international students to come to Canada,” said Hussen.

In reply to a question, whether the refugees get more money than an average Canadian, he said, “Refugees get income assistance during their 1st year only. They do not get more money than Canadians.” The minister gave an example of himself and said, “We do give income assistance to immigrants when they are in the process of settlement, but they contribute back to this country. We should be open-minded. These immigrants will be as successful as other Canadians will in the long term.

According to Hussen the number of tourists, businesspersons and students applying visa, have doubled in the last 2 years. Canada gives the option of our government we have been able to do more in immigration to people but according to the immigration system.

For 1st time, scientists see how estrogen protects the female heart during sleep-wake cycle

T

he classic Hollywood portrayal of a man jolted awake at 5 a.m. with crushing chest pain from a heart attack contrasts against the more subtle symptoms of heaviness and fatigue in women who suffer cardiac events.

Now medical researchers working to understand that range of symptoms have found major differences in the hearts of male and female mice, and new insight into how the body clock affects the sexes differently.

The discovery could open the door to a better way of understanding heart disease.

To move forward, scientists first had to take a step back to examine how heart disease manifests differently in men and women.

Historically, though men and women vary in size, shape and more, once male and female patients were covered in hospital gowns, doctors and researchers viewed them as one and the same.

That has proved misguided given that, for one thing, the hormone estrogen influences how women are affected by heart disease, offering some protection before menopause.

Cardiovascular researcher Tami Martino focusses on the differences in how male and female hearts respond to time-of-day signals. It turns out that the circadian clock, the body’s chief timekeeper, may offer female hearts more protection against heart disease.

In her study, Martino — a biomedical sciences professor at the University of Guelph — employed mice with a genetic mutation in the cells that keep time, helping the body respond to light and dark signals. In humans, similar cells help our bodies to rev up after we awaken and to rest at night.

It is “the first time that anybody’s been able to look at how the female heart is protected and specifically how the circadian mechanism helps to protect against that as well,” said Martino.

Rodent shift workers That genetic “clock” mutation effectively made male and female mice into the equivalent of shift workers. But only the aging male mice showed circadian systems that were out of whack, which took a toll on their hearts.

A healthy circadian clock protects the heart from cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle. The researchers found that, in female mice, the presence of estrogen seems to keep the heart healthy even when the sleep-wake cycle is disrupted.

Martino’s experiments, published in the journal Cardiovascular Research, also examined the effects of ovarian hormones in protecting female mice aged to the equivalent of 70 to 90 years in humans.

As soon as investigators removed ovaries from female mice, the rodents developed heart disease. The researchers measured how much the heart muscle struggled to keep up with energy demands, and found they fared worse.

This work could be an important step toward understanding how women’s bodies

can cope with living much longer past menopause than generations past, without the heart-protecting benefits of estrogen.

Martino’s research builds on work acknowledged this week with a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The Swedish academy honoured three U.S.-born scientists for their “discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm” in fruit fly models.

Our cellular clocks can be thrown out of synch travelling across time zones or doing shift work, for example. Now scientists are investigating what happens when we burn the candle at both ends because of “social jet lag” — hectic schedules that lead people to sleep in on weekends after going too hard all week.

For Martino and her colleagues, the mice findings open new avenues to explore.

“The idea is now if women are going to be developing heart disease, why is this happening? Why were they protected earlier on? Why do they lose that protection? Because now if you take away the hormones as they get older, they’re going to be susceptible to social jet lag. They’re going to be susceptible to sleep disorders.”

Culture change coming If body clocks respond differently in male and female hearts, it presents the possibility of giving men and women heart medications at different times of day, she said.

For Dr. Cara Tannenbaum, scientific director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Gender and Health, the findings are an exciting confirmation of how males and females differ.

Scientists are looking at other ways heart health varies between men and women, said Tannenbaum. They’ve found sex differences in the progenitor, or precursor, stem cells that rebuild heart muscles, for example.

Still, it will take “a bit of a culture change,” for medical research to catch up on how treatment should differ between the sexes, said Tannenbaum. “We’re getting there.”

One example: Health Canada warned that prescription sleeping pills containing zolpiderm, sold as Ambien, should be prescribed with different doses for men and women. “This example reflects the concept that personalized medicine for men and women based on the science of sex differences is possible and already happening,” Tannenbaum said.

Research conducted at the University of California, Davis found that people who worked daily to cultivate an attitude of gratitude experienced improved mood, energy and physical well-being. It’s likely that lower levels of cortisol played a major role in this.

2. They avoid asking “What if?”

“What if?” statements throw fuel on the fire of stress and worry. Things can go in a million different directions, and the more time you spend worrying about the possibilities, the less time you’ll spend focusing on taking action that will calm you down and keep your stress under control. Calm people know that asking “What if? will only take them to a place they don’t want—or need—to go.

3. They stay positive.

Positive thoughts help make stress intermittent by focusing your brain’s attention onto something that is completely stress-free.

You have to give your wandering brain a little help by consciously selecting something positive to think about. Any positive thought will do to refocus your attention. When things are going well, and your mood is good, this is relatively easy. When things are going poorly, and your mind is flooded with negative thoughts, this can be a challenge. In these moments, think about your day and identify one positive thing that happened, no matter how small. If you can’t think of something from the current day, reflect on the previous day or even the previous week. Or perhaps you’re looking forward to an exciting event that you can focus your attention on. The point here is that you must have something positive that you’re ready to shift your attention to when your thoughts turn negative.

4. They disconnect.

Given the importance of keeping stress intermittent, it’s easy to see how taking regular time off the grid can help keep your stress under control. When you make yourself available to your work 24/7, you expose yourself to a constant barrage of stressors. Forcing yourself offline and even—gulp!—turning off your phone gives your body a break from a constant source of stress. Studies have shown that something as simple as an email break can lower stress

levels.

Technology enables constant communication and the expectation that you should be available 24/7. It is extremely difficult to enjoy a stress-free moment outside of work when an email that will change your train of thought and get you thinking (read: stressing) about work can drop onto your phone at any moment. If detaching yourself from work-related communication on weekday evenings is too big a challenge, then how about the weekend? Choose blocks of time where you cut the cord and go offline.

You’ll be amazed at how refreshing these breaks are and how they reduce stress by putting a mental recharge into your weekly schedule. If you’re worried about the negative repercussions of taking this step, first try doing it at times when you’re unlikely to be contacted—maybe Sunday morning.

As you grow more comfortable with it, and as your coworkers begin to accept the time you spend offline, gradually expand the amount of time you spend away from technology.

5. They limit their caffeine intake.

Drinking caffeine triggers the release of adrenaline. Adrenaline is the source of the “fight-or-flight” response, a survival mechanism that forces you to stand up and fight or run for the hills when faced with a threat.

The fight-or-flight mechanism sidesteps rational thinking in favor of a faster response.

This is great when a bear is chasing you, but not so great when you’re responding to a curt email. When caffeine puts your brain and body into this hyperaroused state of stress, your emotions overrun your behavior. The stress that caffeine creates is far from intermittent, as its long half-life ensures that it takes its sweet time working its way out of your body.

6. They sleep.

I’ve beaten this one to death over the years and can’t say enough about the importance of sleep to increasing your emotional intelligence and managing your stress levels.

When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, shuffling through the day’s memories and storing or discarding them (which causes dreams), so that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Your self-control, attention and memory are all reduced when you don’t get enough—or the right kind—of sleep. Sleep deprivation raises stress hormone levels on its own, even without a stressor present. Stressful projects often make you feel as if you have no time to

sleep, but taking the time to get a decent night’s sleep is often the one thing keeping you from getting things under control.

7. They squash negative self-talk.

A big step in managing stress involves stopping negative self-talk in its tracks. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that—thoughts, not facts. When you find yourself believing the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says, it’s time to stop and write them down. Literally stop what you’re doing and write down what you’re thinking.

Once you’ve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you will be more rational and clear-headed in evaluating their veracity.

You can bet that your statements aren’t true any time you use words like “never,” “worst,” “ever,” etc. If your statements still look like facts once they’re on paper, take them to a friend or colleague you trust and see if he or she agrees with you. Then the truth will surely come out. When it feels like something always or never happens, this is just your brain’s natural threat tendency inflating the perceived frequency or severity of an event. Identifying and labeling your thoughts as thoughts by separating them from the facts will help you escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive new outlook.

8. They reframe their perspective.

Stress and worry are fueled by our own skewed perception of events. It’s easy to think that unrealistic deadlines, unforgiving bosses and out-of-control traffic are the reasons we’re so stressed all the time. You can’t control your circumstances, but you can control how you respond to them. So before you spend too much time dwelling on something, take a minute to put the situation in perspective. If you aren’t sure when you need to do this, try looking for clues that your anxiety may not be proportional to the stressor. If you’re thinking in broad, sweeping statements such as “Everything is going wrong” or “Nothing will work out,” then you need to reframe the situation.

A great way to correct this unproductive thought pattern is to list the specific things that actually are going wrong or not working out. Most likely you will come up with just some things—not everything—and the scope of these stressors will look much more limited than it initially appeared.

9. They breathe.

The easiest way to make stress intermittent lies in something that you have to do every day anyway: breathing. The practice of being in the moment with your breathing will begin to train your brain to focus solely on the task at hand and get the stress monkey off your back. When you’re feeling stressed, take a couple of minutes to focus on your breathing. Close the door, put away all other distractions, and just sit in a chair and breathe. The goal is to spend the entire time focused only on your breathing, which will prevent your mind from wandering.

Think about how it feels to breathe in and out. This sounds simple, but it’s hard to do for more than a minute or two. It’s alright if you get sidetracked by another thought; this is sure to happen at the beginning, and you just need to bring your focus back to your breathing. If staying focused on your breathing proves to be a real struggle, try counting each breath in and out until you get to 20, and then start again from 1. Don’t worry if you lose count; you can always just start over.This task may seem too easy or even a little silly, but you’ll be surprised by how calm you feel afterward and how much easier it is to let go of distracting thoughts that otherwise seem to have lodged permanently inside your brain.

10. They use their support system.

It’s tempting, yet entirely ineffective, to attempt tackling everything by yourself. To be calm and productive, you need to recognize your weaknesses and ask for help when you need it. This means tapping into your support system when a situation is challenging enough for you to feel overwhelmed. Everyone has someone at work and/or outside work who is on their team, rooting for them and ready to help them get the best from a difficult situation. Identify these individuals in your life and make an effort to seek their insight and assistance when you need it. Something as simple as talking about your worries will provide an outlet for your anxiety and stress and supply you with a new perspective on the situation. Most of the time, other people can see a solution that you can’t because they are not as emotionally invested in the situation.

Asking for help will mitigate your stress and strengthen your relationships with those you rely upon.

et me be extremely clear. I am not in favour of Quebec’s religious neutrality law. As many have observed, Bill 62 contradicts the very idea of neutrality, breaches the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the political machinations of the legislation are all too obvious.

The signs clearly point toward niqab as the legislation’s prime target. Past cases such as the Quebec religious symbols ban and the attempt to uncover women for the citizenship oath corroborate this.

For Muslim women who do not agree with the religious philosophy behind the niqab (or the hijab for that matter), but do believe in freedom of thought and expression for all women, this is a conflicting issue.

I arrived in Canada many years ago, from a Muslim country that was fast becoming religiously and socially oppressive, particularly towards women, intent on hiding them behind veils and head coverings.

Here, I felt I could finally escape that. Little did I know that this would follow me to Canada, under the guise of religious freedom and free will.

As a Muslim who has never believed in the hijab, let alone the niqab, it has been difficult to watch its popularity steadily rising.

I have witnessed the visual fabric of my country of birth change radically, with more and more head-covered women and girls, who’ve lost any sort of distinction as women, as the hijab literally and figuratively gains a chokehold around their necks and the niqab renders them faceless.

Seeing that in Canada is even harder.

As women in Muslim countries fight for equality, extolling the hijab or niqab as a symbol of religious freedom only adds layers of obscurity to this excruciating struggle.

Instead of opening up to the world, this covers us up even more, relegating our identity to a “something” that lies underneath or behind a veil. Yet, it is becoming the most starkly visible symbol of Muslim female identity globally.

The matter of personal choice becomes even more humiliating an argument when I see Muslim women defending their choice

to wear the hijab or niqab in the name of religion, when it does nothing to stop the unending cycle of relentless violence, subjugation and male domination that Muslim women go through every day. Even in Canada.

The argument of personal choice to don the hijab or the niqab – which is about masculine subjugation of the female body and not a personal choice, no matter how much women may insist it is – loses its credibility when it follows on the heels of burgeoning religiosity.

No doubt, wearing the hijab, or the niqab, isn’t a barrier to being a successful woman. I have personally experienced the professionalism of such women – scholars, scientists, doctors, politicians – and never doubted them.

But where Muslim women should be trying to break the shackles of centuries-old tradition, they are instead succumbing to it by convincing themselves (and others) that they are embracing the independence of “choice.”

For many of us, who have come from Muslim countries and who have personally witnessed the negative impact of such traditions on women, the defence of such practices as personal choices is both a disappointment and a step back in trying to prevent our countries of origin and their women from descending into oblivion.

Bill 62 isn’t about living in harmony with others, or about respecting secularism. It is clearly about discrimination. But if we separate the rationale for Bill 62 from what the niqab supposedly stands for in the minds of Muslim women, there is a much deeper and possibly darker reality to contend with.

And it is time that we, as Muslim women, looked at this closely and carefully, before widely condemning the curtailment of religious freedom.

Bill 62 affects those living in Quebec and in Canada. But the niqab affects the freedoms of Muslim women all over the world.

The minute we wake up, we can choose to get out of bed and make the most of our day or feel dread about the day ahead. This is nobody’s choice but ours. Generally, the way we start our day influences how we feel for the rest of the day.

When you wake up in the morning, take a few minutes to take a few deep breaths and find something that you’re grateful for (your children, partner, your health or nature outside your window). Take this time to be thankful for all that you have in your life instead of wasting your energy on thinking about what you don’t have. Instead of pouncing straight out of bed, simply observe your breath. Breathe in for a count of 4 to 5 and breathe out also for a count of 4 to 5 allowing everything to drop away. Notice how your breath enters your body, notice how your breath leaves your body, and notice the little pause between each breath.

This will allow you to create a sense of peace within and it will also help get you into a good head space before your feet touch the ground.

It feels good and it’s an amazing way to consciously set your energy and intention towards your day moving, follow this with a nutritious breakfast to kickstart your metabolism and fuel your body to face the day ahead. Get clear about your intentions for the day.

For example you can intend to have a productive day.

You can intend to have quality time with your family and friends with no distractions or limitations. You

day. You can intend to have a calm and peaceful day. You can intend to learn something new or be helpful to someone. Whatever it is just be clear about what it is you want your day to be. In order to create, manifest, and attract it, you must first align your heart, mind, and spirit with your intention. In other words, you truly need to feel it!

Many people don’t understand the power of thoughts, because they live every day on autopilot, doing most things out of habit, and therefore they create their reality unconsciously as if they’re wearing a blindfold.

But whether we’re aware of it or not, we create our reality with our thoughts and behaviour. This means we have the power to choose to be a conscious, mindful creator and change our reality to what we really want it to be. Remember, you choose your thoughts, you choose your behaviour, you choose the outcome.

And every choice you make determines how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally.

“More Than a Job” Muslim Food Bank Success Stories

How Volunteering for the Muslim Food Bank Changed a Syrian Woman’s Life?

C

an you imagine never having worked your entire life? That was Maisa Azar’s life until she started volunteering for the Muslim Food Bank.

Maisa, 41, juggles between her job and taking care of her five kids but she has never felt more fulfilled.

Maisa was only eighteen when she got married in her native Syria to a Syrian-Canadian man.

Soon after, she moved to Canada and started her journey of learning English and making Canada her new home. Maisa’s young adult years were spent raising a family. When her kids were old enough, she decided to start working so she could sponsor her mother from Syria.

Maisa had heard about the Muslim Food Bank from her friends so she applied to be a volunteer. Her application was accepted and she handled various tasks such as greeting clients, packing food parcels and handing them out. Maisa also volunteered at a Sunday school called Iqra based in Surrey.

Maisa and her friend took orders to make lunch for students. She cooked the meal at her home, packed it and then delivered it to the classrooms. After volunteering for the Muslim Food Bank for a year, Maisa

was offered a paid job and she accepted it in a heartbeat.

To Maisa, working at the Muslim Food Bank is more than just a job, it’s life changing.

Though most people can vouch the changes the food bank brings in its clients’ lives, the lesser-known fact is that the volunteers get a lot out of their experience as well. Take Maisa’s example, she had never held a job before she was given the opportunity to volunteer at the Muslim Food Bank.

At first, she started with helping in handing out food parcels then she went to train to be a caseworker and now support clients with whatever challenges life throws their way. Handling her housework along with the job isn’t easy but Maisa is happy knowing that she is contributing to the community.

Maisa’s case is not unique to immigrants.

Many women in their forties that try to enter (or re-enter) the workforce face many challenges, not the least of which is being considered inexperienced. That these women are usually competent, organised and motivated individuals is often overlooked by employers. The fact of the matter is that women’s labor inside the home is devalued for the sheer fact that they are not paid for the work they do. Organisations like the Muslim Food Bank are turning the tide by channeling such women’s skills in the right direction and are giving them the opportunities to prove their worth.

Most days Maisa drives to work but when her husband takes the car, she walks to the food bank.

“This job doesn’t feel like a job because you know you’re helping people,” Maisa says. “I put myself in the refugees’ shoes and remember how I felt when I’d first arrived in Canada.”

To Maisa’s surprise, six months after she submitted the application to sponsor her mother, she was accepted into Canada.

Maisa feels that helping people who are at the lowest point in their lives has been the reason that she was reunited with her mother. Since her mother’s arrival, she has joined Maisa as a volunteer at the Muslim Food Bank. What’s amazing is that this is the first time her mother has ever worked outside the home as well.

Maisa wants women to know that no matter what their circumstances are, they can work and making a living.

“No woman should have to sit at home.

Even if she has kids, she should know that she can work,” Maisa says.

These are real stories where our volunteers have an impact on members of our community helping them progress in their lives.

Today, we have access to information, technology and resources like never before. We live in a hyper-connected time where it’s very easy to communicate and interact with potential customers and possible business partners. While all of this has been good for business, it’s also created challenges.

With the access has come a flood of people who could and will waste your time if you let them. As busy entrepreneurs, our time is one of our most valuable resources. We can’t afford to waste it on what seems important but isn’t. We can’t let anyone else control our schedule and invade our boundaries. It’s smart to watch for the warning signs someone is about to waste your time.

1. They lead with what they want.

You’ve gotten at least a few messages from people on social media or through email who lead with a request. They want you to talk about their business on your networks. They want you to buy from them, even though you know nothing about what they offer. They are asking for something you sell but they want it for free.

When someone’s first interaction with you is about them and something they want, run the other way as fast as you can. This is a glaring sign that your whole relationship will be based on that self-centered entrepreneur. Even if you did something for them, it wouldn’t be enough. Strong business relationships are formed when there’s value added first.

2. They tell you they want to hire you “months from now.”

This kind of interaction is designed to make you think the person will be a future customer. They lead with a statement saying they want to hire you months from now but need information or advice first.

This type of entrepreneur has probably done the same thing with many others before you. If they don’t have the funds to hire you right now, tell you can have a conversation and answer some questions when they are ready to buy. Don’t get suckered into a situation where your precious time is drained by someone promising future business. If they have questions as to the value you provide, they can follow up with your past/current clients or consume your content and assess the value that way.

3. They try to trade, barter or ask for a collaboration before you even know each other.

This goes along with the first warning sign. A stranger or someone you casually know approaches you about ways to get your time and knowledge without any money being exchanged. They offer to barter, trade or collaborate before you know, like or trust them. What they offer might not be valuable to you. In each of these type of situations, you have to use your best judgment. These offers just don’t make sense after you reach a certain level in your entrepreneurial journey.

4. They try to get the advice your clients pay for.

This is very common today. You get social media messages, emails, even calls from people who want the kind of advice your clients pay for. They may ask nicely or they may come at you hard, but they want access to the good stuff just because you’re connected.

‘Missing’ journalist Zeenat Shahzadi recovered after more than 2 years

Zeenat Shahzadi, the journalist who went missing in Lahore in 2015, has been recovered by security forces, officials said on Friday. Retired Justice Javed Iqbal, head of the missing persons commission, confirmed Shahzadi’s return while speaking to BBC Urdu. She was recovered on Wednesday night from near the Pak-Afghan border, Iqbal said. The newly appointed National Accountability Bureau chief said that some non-state actors and enemy agencies had kidnapped her and she was recovered from them, adding that tribal elders in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa played an important role in her recovery.

Shahzadi’s family has yet to issue a statement.

Shahzadi, who raised her voice for disappear-

ance of victims, went missing in August 2015 while on the trail of an Indian citizen Hamid Ansari reported to have been caught by Pakistani agencies. She had filed an application with the Supreme Court’s Human Rights Cell on behalf of Fauzia Ansari, Hamid’s mother.

According to one version, Hamid was pursuing a Pakistani woman whom he had befriended on the Internet.

The application was accepted and forwarded to the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances.

A few months later, news surfaced in a section of the media, saying that Hamid had been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on charges of espionage. According to some

rights campaigners, Hamid has served his sentence and ought to be set free now.

Human rights activist Hina Jillani, in a 2016 interview with BBC Urdu, alleged that Shahzadi had once told her family that she had been “forcibly taken away by security agencies”, detained for four hours and questioned about Hamid.

The disappearance of Shahzadi hit headlines once again in 2016 when her brother, Saddam Hussain, committed suicide in March that year. His elder brother, Salman, had told Dawn that the teenage boy was emotionally attached to his missing sister and very much disturbed by her mysterious disappearance.

By: Faiza Ilyas KARACHI: The built heritage of Karachi referred to as ‘Historic Karachi’ — has recently been included in the list of 25 sites constituting the World Monument Watch List for 2018.

This important development would help highlight the case of Karachi’s historical sites imperilled by massive population growth and infrastructural development.

This was stated by Prof Noman Ahmed, the chairperson of the department of architecture and planning at the NED University of Engineering and Technology, while speaking to Dawn.

The list is announced every year by the World Monument Fund (WMF), a New York-based non-profit organisation dedicated to saving world’s treasured places and has so far orchestrated over 600 projects in 90 countries.

“The credit for this achievement goes to the department’s heritage cell led by Dr Anila Naeem who earlier worked extensively on the historical sites of Shikarpur,” Prof Ahmed

said, adding that the listing would provide an opportunity to create public interest in the historic part of Karachi and initiate activities for its preservation. Expert believes it will help city’s historical sites affected by population boom, infrastructural development More than 1,200 buildings of Karachi alone, he said, were included in the government list of protected heritage before the August court order directing the government to revise the list after conducting a proper survey and scrutiny of all such premises across the province and make proper and comprehensive rules under the Heritage Act within six months.“To my understanding the list [of protected buildings] hasn’t been nullified [by the court]. But, yes, the historical structures remain vulnerable given the fact that no rules were ever framed and now the matter is in court,” he said in reply to a question.

The biggest challenge in preservation, according to him, is to keep the heritage features

intact which requires specialised architectural skills while making room for modern development. “There are a number of strategies and lessons from other countries one can learn and replicate here.

“First of all, we need to have reassuring examples around us to create an understanding and awareness that heritage can be properly preserved. The best example in this case is of Mohatta Palace. But, not many people know about it. Access to historical sites should be easy so people could relate to and understand their history better.”

He was of the opinion that the government should give incentives to owners of heritage structures so that they would be inclined towards their preservation.

“Right now, once a site comes on the heritage list, the owner himself starts damaging the structure so nobody could raise objection over the new construction,” he said.

ument List are: Government House in Antigua and Barbuda; Sirius Building in Sydney, Australia; Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue in Alexandria, Egypt; Grand Theatre; Prince Kung’s Mansion in Beijing, China; Takiyyat Ibrahim al-Gulshani in Cairo, Egypt; Al-Hadba’ Minaret in Mosul, Iraq; and Post-Independence Architecture of Delhi, India.

“The sites present timely opportunities for conservation, community engagement and sustainable development,” the WMF website states.

MUZAFFARABAD: Hun­ dreds of women and children marched on a thoroughfare here on Monday to condemn the fresh wave of brutal acts in India-held Kashmir, particularly the chopping of women’s braids.

The protesters, drawn from different camps of post-1990 migrants, gathered outside the press club at about 10.30am, with banners and placards inscribed with anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.

“We strongly and unanimously condemn the acts of braid-chopping in occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” read a big banner.

Another banner that was laid on the ground with cross marks had the portraits of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and army chief Gen Bipin Rawat.

It was torched outside the office of UN Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan near Domail, the confluence of the Neelum and Jhelum rivers, where the rally ended.

“We want freedom; we will get freedom,” shouted the participants as they marched through the main road. “Go back India, go back,” was another oft-repeated chant.

Attacks termed Indian conspiracy to undermine struggle against occupation According to international media reports, more than

200 cases of braid-chopping have been reported over the past six weeks in India-held Kash­mir. A number of victims were also attacked and drug­ged before their hair was cut off. Held Kashmir police as well as extremist pro-India groups allege that the “radical elements” were perpetrating this act “to disturb peace, create animosity between people and security forces and build an atmosphere of fear among women”.

Police have offered up to Rs600,000 in the Indian currency for information about the culprits, media reports say.

However, rejecting their stance, the ‘Joint Resistance Leadership’ — comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik — has been pointing out that the braid-cutting attacks are part of New Delhi’s conspiracy to undermine the ongoing struggle against its illegal rule in the region.

The protesters in Muzaffarabad said there had reason to believe that these acts were being perpetrated at the behest of the Indian government, which wanted to divert attention from the basic demand of Kashmiris — freedom. “We are sure that India is involved in these ghastly acts,” said Uzair Ahmed Ghazali, whose Pasban-i-Hurriyat

Jammu and Kashmir (PHJK) had organised the demonstration.

While speaking to demonstrators, he maintained that following the courageous participation of women in anti-India demonstrations across the held territory, Indian intelligence agencies had resorted to this cowardly practice to create scare among the womenfolk on the one hand and divert the attention of the entire freedom-seeking community from their primary cause on the other. Farhat Qureshi, a government servant from the post-1990 refugees, said the lives and honour of hundreds of thousands of Kashmiri women were at risk at the hands of savage Indian troops.

Fifth ODI: Pakistan cruise to nine-wicket victory, complete ‘green-wash’

Pakistan comfortably won the fifth ODI against Sri Lanka by nine wickets, completing a 5-0 whitewash in Sharjah on Monday and marking their ninth consecutive victory in the format.It was Sri Lanka’s third whitewash in the year — previous two being at the hands of South Africa and India — the most number of whitewashes in ODIs against any team in a year.

Chasing the 104-run target set by Sri Lanka, Pakistan lost only Fakhar Zaman — unfortunately caught behind just two runs shy of a half century.

Imam-ul-Haq, who made a century on debut in the third ODI of the series, completed the chase with a four, contributing 45 runs in total for Pakistan’s cause. Newcomer Usman Khan Shinwari was named ‘man of the match’ for his five-for today; Hasan Ali received the ‘man of the series’ award for his consistently brilliant performances — 14 wickets including a five-for — throughout

the series.Earlier, Sri Lanka had lost their first five wickets for only 20 runs thanks to a whirlwind spell of pace bowling by Shinwari, who set the stage for their eventual collapse for 103 in only the 27th over.

India managed to hold off a big challenge from Malaysia to win the Asia Cup 2017 title in Dhaka on Sunday. It was nervous last 10 minutes for the Indians as Malaysia mounted attack after attack in search of an equaliser. In the form of their third penalty corner, Malaysia had a golden opportunity to take the match into shoot-out but the Indian defence stood tall to maintain their slender lead.
