U.N. calls on Netanyahu to act on commitment to two-state solution

The United Nations called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to translate into action his commitment to a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, including halting settlement construction. Netanyahu took a stand against Palestinian statehood during his election campaign earlier this year, but has since committed to a two-state solution. Pal-

estinians seek a state in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, lands Israel captured in 1967. “Secretary-General (Ban Ki-moon) is encouraged by the recent reaffirmations by Prime Minister Netanyahu of his commitment to ‘the idea of a sustainable two-state solution’ but notes this must be translated into actions,” U.N. political affairs chief Jeffrey Feltman told the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday. Feltman said Israel needed to stop “sensitive and unilateral” activities such as settlements. The United Nations and most countries consider settlements that Israel has built on territory captured in 1967 as illegal. U.S.-brokered peace talks broke off in April 2014, with disputes raging over Israeli settlement-building and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s unity deal with Hamas Islamists, who do not recognize Israel’s right to exist. HAPPY BIRTH DAY ‘O’ CANADA With federal elections only a few months away, July 1st 2015 is going to mark Canada’s 148th anniversary with more excitement. ‘Canada Day’ being a federal statutory holiday, is celebrated throughout Canada with full fervour in recognition of the “July 1, 1867 enactment” of the British North Americas Act (BNA), also called “The Constitution Act, 1867.”

Historically speaking, the Canadian founders of confederation were the representatives of the British North America colonies who attended the three major conferences on Canadian confederation. Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on that day. Not only was he the ‘father of confederation,’ but he also drafted two-thirds of the provisions of the BNA creating the ‘Dominion of Canada.’ As a result, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain.

The four provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario.

Currently, Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories. This Canadian national holiday was enacted in 1879 under the name “Dominion Day.” In fact, the formation of the union of provinces under a new country is the basis of Canada’s July 1 celebration each year. However, the ‘Dominion Day’ changed into ‘Canada Day’ on October 27, 1982.

The official lyrics “O Canada” were finalized in 1968 by a special joint committee of the Senate and House of Commons. This day also marks the anniversary of the officially proclaimed “O Canada” as national anthem. The Royal anthem plays ‘God Save The Queen’ at some festive locations celebrating Canada Day. More exciting is the fact that Ottawa always welcomes Canadians

from all across Canada who go to the national Capital to enjoy the specifically tailored festivities. This year again, thousands of Canadians are expected to congregate on the Parliament Hill to mark their country’s birthday.

The celebrations will be all over Canada; similarly, Surrey, BC has its own celebration features that include the world-class entertainment, great food, games and amusement rides, and indeed a spectacular fireworks finale.

Some people would celebrate the special day by joining BBQ parties and enjoying the fireworks all over the country.

Indeed, the event serves as a good bridge to facilitate Muslims to build ties with Canadians of other faiths.

The international “mouth watering” food and dishes from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Eritrea, Somalia, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, and Turkey would be made available. However, this year again the Canadian Muslims would have to wait till sunset to enjoy food. Adjusting a little is in respect of the sacred month of “pre-dawn to dusk” fasting.

Despite the insurmountable difficulty, a tolerance level among the members of multi-cultural society is a real blessing, as it has been playing a big role in promoting diversity in schools, work places, businesses and academic institutions. Of course, the credit goes to millions of motivated immigrants who kept building this nation to make Canada an attractive country to live peacefully.

Every year, tens of thousands of Canadians celebrate Canada Day in grand style in the nation’s capital flocking to Parliament Hill to join with the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official

Languages. Of course, the Canadians are entitled to celebrate their legacy, pride and opportunities.

Certainly, Canada Day unites all Canadians regardless of creed, culture or ethnicity; it help us understand the significance of the Canadian life.

Also, the celebrations take place in all other parts of the country. And, the 149th Happy Canada Day celebration in Surrey BC features: world class entertainment, great food, games & amusement rides, and a spectacular fireworks finale.

As the Canadian history reflects the wonderful diverse cultural races, the importance of celebrating Canada Day means a lot to all Canadians, certainly.

Beyond doubt, it brings us together, strengthens our communities, and helps us understand the significance of the Canadian life.

On the other hand, many people wonder if the government is really protecting the celebrating and the non celebrating Canadians: Yes, Government is committed to protect Canadians at all costs, yet there are many unanswered questions: For example, a new Ontario controversial curriculum regarding the sex education to the innocent minor children is unacceptable to people belonging to many faiths and the Muslim community is hardly hit indeed. What kind of protection is it?

Then, there are a couple of federal legislations that some Canadians are concerned about.

The bill C-24 has positives and negatives and “once a citizen always a citizen” is not true any longer, yet at the same time it will curb the abusers using consular services while living out of Canada; this practice by the abusers is burdening heavily on the Canadian tax payers.

However, the problem is that every country has a different law and hence different definitions of terrorism and espionage some even consider free speech or free press as an act of espionage/terrorism.

This can create a situation where our government will be legally deporting Canadians who were practicing their basic right of freedom elsewhere.

Knowing this reality the bill has left people like me in confusion and in a state of loss of association.

As much as I live multiculturalism of Canada I will not be able to associate my children and future generations with my home country because then they will be considered as second class citizens.

This implies that this bill is also against core Canadian values of freedom and equality. It has officially divided the Canadian population and it promotes discrimination. Government should realize that such discriminatory laws create conflicts within a society. It is not going to do any good but harm this beautiful multicultural country.

Unlike other parties, we’re not going to cynically promise to do the impossible or engage in a lengthy debate with the provinces over the constitution. Instead, we’ll create a non-partisan Senate that serves Canadians, not political parties.

Real change is about making every vote count in every election. As

For happy “Canada Day” celebrations, Canadians and the government must be on one page, and the media should play its role without bias to promote love and affection among all.

Canada needs to protect its genuine citizens indiscriminately nationally while keeping its peace keeping role internationally.

The Bill C-24 which was passed last year recently came into effect.

The Bill made me and thousands of other immigrants like me a second class citizen with fewer rights than the first class citizens in Canada.

Now, under the law, the Canadian population is officially divided into fortunate few who were born here and the unfortunate others who hold dual nationality as they were not born in Canada. Those people who were not born in Canada now are labelled as second class citizens which means if they are charged of an act of espionage, demonstration to loyalty or terrorism elsewhere they will be exiled from Canada and their citizenship will be revoked. It does sound like a law which protects our national interest as it allows the government to deport the terrorists or troublemakers from the country to keep Canadian homeland safe.

Sindh heatwave death toll climbs to 830

KARACHI: At least 830 people have perished in Sindh since Saturday as the province languishes in the grips of a searing heatwave.

The total death toll at Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre has risen to 295 since Saturday. The combined death toll at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and other Karachi Municipal Corporation-run hospitals has peaked at 140.

Civil Hospital Karachi has seen 110 dead, while 58 have perished at Liaquat National Hospital.

The Emergency Cardiac Centre in Shah Faisal Colony has seen at least five deaths since Saturday, and Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad and New Karachi have seen 10 and 23 dead respectively.

On Sunday, at least 136 deaths were reported, while on Monday 309 were reported dead. On Tuesday, 311 were reported dead in Karachi while 26 died in other parts of Sindh.

Temperatures in Karachi are expected to peak at 36 degrees Celsius on Wednesday as a relatively cool sea breeze started blowing on Tuesday evening.

The weather outlook for Sindh according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department is hot and humid in most parts of the province, while rain is expected in various parts of Mirpurkhas division and isolated areas in Sukkur, Larkana, Hyderabad and Karachi.

Winds have shifted to the southwest, blowing cooler air into the port city from the Arabian Sea, and the Pakistani Met Office has predicted rain, which would bring lower temperatures.

The government has demanded urgent action to deal with the crisis, and the administration in Sindh province declared Wednesday a public holiday to encourage people to stay indoors out of the sun.

Some residents on Tuesday took to hosing each other down with water to avoid collapsing from heat stroke.

A state of emergency is in force in hospitals which are struggling to cope with the 3,000 people affected by heatstroke and dehydration.

The change in weather will come as welcome relief for the economic hub, where maximum temperatures have hovered around 44-45 degrees Celsius since Saturday.

The National Disaster Management Authority has been setting up dedicated heatstroke treatment centres to try to cope with the volume of patients.

India provided funds to MQM, claims BBC report

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has received funding from Indian authorities, claims a startling report published by the BBC on Wednesday.

According to the report which quotes an unnamed “authoritative Pakistani source”, officials in MQM have told UK authorities that they received Indian government funds.

The report further states that UK authorities investigating MQM for alleged money laundering also found a list of weapons in an MQM property.

PA: Opposition parties submit resolution against govt, KE KARACHI: Opposition parties in the Sindh Assembly on Wednesday submitted a resolution, condemning the Sindh government and Karachi Electric (KE) for their failure in discharging responsibilities.

The resolution was signed by MPAs of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Functional (PML-F) groups and the Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf (PTI).

The resolution also criticised the health and local government departments of the Sindh government.

The opposition members hailed the role of Sindh Rangers for establishing heat stroke centres across the province.

It urged the Sindh government to come out and provide proper facilities to masses.

Pakistan only country where majority views Iran positively: PEW According to a new PEW survey, Pakistan is the only country polled where a majority (57%) views Iran— the country with the world’s largest Shia Muslim population— favourably.

The survey comes at a time when the deadline for Iran’s nuclear programme negotiations is approaching (June 30) and Iran’s incumbent president— Hassan Rouhani— is about to complete two years in office. On the whole, the survey concludes that an overwhelming majority of countries— 31 out of 40— view Iran unfavourably.

Countries other than Pakistan where a greater percentage of people view Iran as favourable include Ghana (44%), Vietnam (42%), and Ethiopia

(27%).

Countries in the Middle East have a particularly unfavourable view of Iran, with Israel topping the list, followed closely by Jordan. In Lebanon however, voting patterns diverge along religious lines, with 95% of Lebanese Shia holding favourable views of Iran but only 5% of Sunni Muslims and 29% of Christians in the country view Iran positively.

The survey also notes that over the past few years, Iran’s perception has deteriorated in Muslim-majority countries, even in Pakistan, where most still view Iran positively.

A year of ISIL: ‘There is no future for Iraq’

Large Wall Street investors who made billions when the U.S. housing market collapsed in 2008 now are betting that real estate values in Vancouver will crash. But local real estate professionals believe the American investors are likely to lose their shirts betting against Vancouver property, which they described as a special market thriving on international demand. The U.S. hedge fund investors, known as short-sellers, are betting against what they believe is a housing bubble in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and other Canadian cities. They believe Canadians hold too much mortgage debt, and that Canadian banks, mortgage insurers and “subprime” private lenders will lose money on unpaid loans when property prices fall.

Short-sellers use complex financial arrangements to make rapid profits when publicly traded stocks fall in value. In this case they are betting against businesses connected to property and household debt. They are also betting against the Canadian dollar, because they believe it will decline significantly in a housing bust. Most of these traders are employed by secretive New York investment funds that shy away from publicity, partly because they want to disguise how they lay their bets. A few though, like Marc Cohodes, take the opposite approach. Cohodes, once called Wall Street’s highest-profile shortseller by the New York Times, has come out of partial retirement on his chicken farm in Northern California to make targeted bets against “subprime” Canadian lenders. These lenders make loans to borrowers rejected by traditional banks. Cohodes is a large, humorously profane man who battled a range of opponents during his career, from CEOs of public companies to the management of the world’s top investment bank, Goldman Sachs. Cohodes — who is familiar with Vancouver and has befriended well-known locals, like celebrity chef Hidekazu Tojo — says Vancouver real estate has reached peak insanity, and any number of factors could trigger a collapse. “The cross-currents are beyond crazy in Vancouver — it’s a mix of money laundering, speculation, low interest rates,” he said. “A house is something you live in, but in Vancouver you guys are trading them like the penny stocks on Howe Street.

It’s as clear as day that the market is a Chinese money laundering mecca.” Cohodes said famed New York investor Steve Eisman is the analyst who helped him locate lenders to target in Canada. Eisman will be a featured character in The Big Short — a Hollywood movie based on the inside story of short-sellers who made fortunes targeting major banks

and bad debt products in the U.S. housing crash. For example, in that crash a previously little-known New York hedge fund manager named John Paulson reportedly made between $3 billion and $4 billion for himself in one year. One Canadian housing analyst who advises U.S. clients including Cohodes told The Province that major investors are currently “building positions” against Canadian housing targets. They are predicting that a rise in historically low U.S. interest rates this fall will spill financial stress into Canada. The analyst noted that short-selling bets against big Canadian banks have doubled in New York markets in the past several months.

And the risk of a sharp housing correction connected to Canadians’ high household debt has risen since December, the Bank of Canada recently reported. While short-sellers point to Vancouver as the most extreme housing bubble in Canada, the analyst noted that some investors believe a massive flow of investment from Mainland China makes the market impervious to corrections. Others speculate that if China’s economy slows dramatically, Vancouver’s housing market will go bust. Count one of the world’s most influential investors — Laurence D. Fink, head of the world’s largest asset fund BlackRock Inc. — among those who believe Vancouver property is not only as good as gold, but better. “The two greatest stores of wealth internationally today are contemporary art, and apartments in Manhattan, Vancouver and London,” Fink recently told a conference of investors in Singapore. Jonathan Cooper of MacDonald Realty Vancouver said evidence is mounting that the city is, in fact, a special market. “It’s an increasingly internationallyfocused market with demand not just from Asia, but increasingly from Americans, too,” Cooper said. He said he understands shortsellers are betting against Vancouver, but he believes the speculators will lose. “Even a broken clock is right twice a day,” Cooper said. “Will there be a correction, some time?

Yes, because markets are cyclical. But barring some huge external shock ... it’s hard to see a big decline.” Meanwhile, Canadian banks suggest a period of economic vulnerability in early 2015 has passed. TD Economics reported in early June: “The notion of ‘short’ or sell Canada became a growing theme in international circles, as falling oil prices added to concerns about an overheated housing market and high household indebtedness. “A few months later it seems the bears have not been proven right.”

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) on Tuesday warned that millions of children worldwide continue to live in poverty, lack access to education while suffering from chronic malnutrition and about six million die before they turn five. Focusing on child-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) established by the UN in 2000, Unicef’s report—Progress for Children: Beyond Averages: Learning from the MDGs—highlights the importance of placing those most in need at the centre of the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda, Xinhua reported.

If progress remains at current levels, and if projected population growth proves to be accurate, Unicef estimates that 68 million more children under five will die from mostly preventable causes by 2030 while some 119 million children will still be chronically malnourished in 2030. These figures come despite the headway made since MDGs implementation, as under-five mortality has dropped by over half, under-

weight and chronic malnutrition among under-fives has decreased by 42 and 41 per cent respectively and maternal mortality has decreased by 45 per cent. Amid the progress made in child survival, nutrition, reduction in mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and primary school enrolment, Unicef considers these achievements to be “only part of a story”. Figures show that 47 per cent of the one billion people living in extreme poverty today are 18 years or under, while the poorest children are not only almost twice as likely to die before age five than their richest counterparts, but also five times more likely to be out of school than the latter. According to the UN agency, enhanced local health, education, and social protection systems should be encouraged to help more children not only survive but also thrive, while investments tailored to the needs of the most vulnerable can furthermore yield short and long-term benefits.

Justin Trudeau: I’ll end ISIS combat mission, restore relations with Iran

If the Liberal Party claims victory in the next federal election, Justin Trudeau says, his government would end Canada’s bombing mission against ISIS in Iraq and Syria and restore diplomatic relations with Iran, in a dramatic departure from the path taken by the Harper government on foreign policy. “We’d move away from the CF-18 [bombing] mission,” Trudeau said in an interview with Terry Milewski on CBC’s Power & Politics. “This government has failed miserably to demonstrate why the best mission for Canada is to participate in a bombing mission,” Trudeau said. And while Trudeau pledged to pull Canadian fighter jets from the Middle East, he doubled down on his commitment to send more military personnel to help train Iraqi security forces — beyond the 70 or so Canadian special operations personnel who are currently embedded with the Kurdish Peshmerga. “We would engage Canada’s military in something we’ve demonstrated tremendous ability at in Afghanistan and elsewhere: training up local troops doing the fighting on the ground.” Trudeau refused to say how many more trainers should be deployed. U.S. President Barack Obama announced earlier this month that he’d send an additional 450 American troops to advise and assist local Iraqi forces in the fight against ISIS. Trudeau ruled out committing combat troops to Iraq, even as the security situation there deteriorates. The Harper government abruptly closed the Canadian Embassy in Tehran in 2012 and expelled Iranian diplomats from Ottawa. “I would hope that Canada would be able to reopen its mission, as I understand it, there were security concerns that led to the closing of the mission, but I’m fairly certain that there are ways to re-engage,” Trudeau said. The comments come as negotiators from the so-called P5+1 — the U.S., the U.K., France, China, Russia and Germany — seek to hammer out a deal to limit Iran’s nuclear program. Trudeau said he was cautiously optimistic that the two sides could come to an agreement before the June 30 deadline. The negotiations have faced a barrage of criticism from leaders in Israel, who say any deal with Iran over nuclear weapons is tantamount to appeasement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the Iranian regime cannot be trusted and economically punishing sanctions against Iran must be preserved. The Liberal Party leader also ruled out any new taxes on the middle class to fund any new government initiatives — including a hike to the GST. “Middle-class Canadians have struggled enough — we’re not going to be raising taxes for them,” Trudeau said. The Liberals say they will boost benefits to Canadians with children if they’re elected. Under the Trudeau plan, families with children under 18 and an annual income below $150,000, about 90 per cent of families, would receive more than they do under the current universal child care benefit.

But the Liberal plan would cost $2 billion more than what the Harper government has set aside for child benefits. Trudeau said he could fill that gap by using the $1.7-billion surplus the federal government is expected to post next year and by putting an end to partisan government advertising.

Khamenei: US is after destroying our nuclear industry

Iran’s supreme leader has said that the US wants to destroy entirely the country’s nuclear industry, state TV has reported, pointing out that international inspections of Iran’s military sites are out of question. “America is after destroying our nuclear industry altogether,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in his address on Tuesday. “Our negotiators’ aim is to safeguard Iran’s integrity ... and our nuclear achievements during the talks.” Khamenei ruled out freezing Iran’s sensitive nuclear activities for long period such as 10 or 12 years, state TV quoted him as saying. He has opposed inspections of military sites by foreigners in the past. The supreme leader’s remarks come a day after the Iranian parliament passed a bill banning access for UN inspectors to its military sites and scientists, potentially complicating chances for the deal as a self-imposed June 30 deadline approaches. Banking and other economic sanctions imposed by the UN and the US must be lifted “immediately” if a nuclear deal is signed, he said, according to a transcript posted on his official website. On Monday Iran’s Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is expected in Vienna in the coming days with other foreign ministers, said in Luxembourg that “all sides should avoid excessive demands”. “There is the possibility that we can finish this by the deadline or a few days after the deadline,” Zarif said as he met his British, French and German counterparts, saying there was sufficient “political commitment”.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond urged “more flexibility” from Tehran, while Iran’s lead negotiator Abbas Araghchi said “progress hasn’t been what we expected”. In April, Iran and the “P5 1” - the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany - agreed the main outlines of the deal after a marathon talks in Lausanne, Switzerland. After two missed deadlines in July and then November last year, this built on an interim deal struck in Geneva in November 2013 after Ira-

nian President Hassan Rouhani was elected.

According to the Lausanne framework, Iran will downsize its nuclear activities, slashing the number of centrifuges enriching uranium, which can be used in nuclear power but also when highly purified for a bomb. The powers hope this will ensure Iran would need at least a year - compared with a few months in 2013 - to produce a bomb’s worth of material. Tight UN inspections would give ample notice of any such “breakout”. In return, UN and Western sanctions that have caused Iran major economic pain would be progressively lifted, although the six powers insist they can be easily “snapped back” if Tehran violates the accord. After 12 years of rising tensions, Iran denies seeking atomic weapons, saying its programme is for peaceful purposes such as meeting, through nuclear power, the energy needs of its almost 78 million people.

After the Lausanne breakthrough, US President Barack Obama hailed the “historic understanding” and said that if completed, the deal would “make our country, our allies and our world safer.” There were celebrations on the streets of Tehran and Rouhani promised on national television that the accord would open a “new page” in Iran’s international relations. However, two major stumbling blocks need to be resolved for the deal to reach fruition. A particular sticking point is thought to be the issue of closer inspections by the UN atomic watchdog, potentially including military sites to probe past - and any future - suspicious activity. “A robust agreement is one which includes an extensive verification element, including if necessary visits to military sites,” French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Sunday. Other tricky issues include how UN sanctions might be re-applied, the reduction of Iran’s uranium stockpile and its future research and development into new types of centrifuges.

WikiLeaks published documents late Tuesday that it says show the U.S. National Security Agency eavesdropped on the last three French presidents, releasing material which appeared to capture officials in Paris talking candidly about Greece’s economy, relations with Germany — and, ironically, American espionage. The release caused uproar among French politicians, although it didn’t reveal any huge surprises or secrets. France itself is on the verge of approving broad new surveillance powers, and is among several U.S. allies that rely heavily on American spying powers when trying to prevent terrorist and other threats. There was no instant confirmation of the accuracy of the documents released in collaboration with French daily newspaper Liberation and investigative website Mediapart, but WikiLeaks has a track record of publishing intelligence and diplomatic material. It appeared serious enough to prompt an emergency meeting of President Francois Hollande’s defense council, according to presidential aides. The council, convening Wednesday morning, includes top French se-

Autopsy shows Freddie Gray died of ‘high-energy injury

The autopsy of the Baltimore black man who died after being hurt while in police custody shows he suffered a “high-energy injury” like those in shallow-water diving accidents, the Baltimore Sun reported on Tuesday. The spinal injury to Freddie Gray, whose death in April triggered protests and rioting, was most likely caused when the police van in which he was riding suddenly decelerated, the newspaper said, citing a copy of the autopsy report.

The state medical examiner’s office concluded that Gray’s death fit the medical and legal definition of an accident. But it ruled the death to be a homicide because officers failed to follow safety procedures “through acts of omission.” Gray, 25, was arrested on April 12 following a foot chase by officers and suffered a severe spinal injury while in police custody. His

death a week later sparked protests over police brutality and looting and rioting that drew national and international attention to the case. The Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office charged the six officers involved in Gray’s arrest and death. Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., the driver of the van, is accused of second-degree depraved heart murder. Three other officers are charged with manslaughter and two officers face lesser charges. The trial is set for October, and the officers have pleaded not guilty. Though Gray was loaded into the van on his belly, the medical examiner surmised that he may have gotten to his feet and was thrown into the wall during an abrupt change in direction, the Sun said. He was not belted in, but his wrists and ankles were shackled, making him “at risk for an unsupported fall during acceleration or deceleration of the van,” the newspaper said, citing the autopsy report.

The report was completed on April 30, the day before State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced the criminal charges.

The autopsy has not been made public.

Mosby’s office and the state medical examiner had no immediate response to requests for comment.

Fasting-A broader View

By Mufti Mohammad Shujaath Ali Almost all the ancient regions in the world have the concept of fasting.

Here are the few examples of some of the religions that emphasise on the importance of fasting in their traditions Fasting in Judaism The Jewish calendar contains comparatively few regular fast-days. Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), is the only fast-day prescribed by the Mosaic Law: And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you: For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD. It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever (Leviticus 16:29-31).

The Jews observe ten days of repentance starting with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and ending with Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). This is a time to consider the sins of the previous year and repent.

Yom Kippur is the day on which Jews believe that the fates of all Jews are to be sealed for the coming year. This day is held to be the most solemn and serious day in the Jewish calendar, which involves grieving for sins committed in the past year as well as praying for forgiveness.

On this day, Jews fast for 25 hours from sundown on the previous evening until sundown the next night. To the Jews, fasting is more than just refraining from drinking and eating: working on fast days is not permitted, and having sexual relations and bathing, as well as using ointments and leather shoes, are prohibited.

Fasting in Christianity From the sermon on the Mount, we know that Jesus instructed his earliest disciples to fast: When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you (Matthew 6:16).

On three occasions in the Bible, people fasted for forty days. The first occasion was when Moses received the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28). The next occasion was when Elijah encountered God before the anointing of Elisha (I King19) The third occasion for such a fast was when Jesus was in the wilderness and tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:2).

There are many reasons given in the Bible for fasting. It is seen as an act of sacrifice that reminds Christians of God and through fasting, while the flesh is denied comfort, the spirit is strengthened.

Fasting in Hinduism Fasting in Hinduism is the denial of the physical needs of the body for the sake of spiritual gains. According to Hindu scriptures, fasting helps create an attunement with the Absolute by establishing a harmo-

nious relationship between the body and the soul.

Fasting is prescribed on all Ekadasi days.

Ekadasi is a Sanskrit word that refers to the 11th day of the lunar fortnight, twice a month (Bowker, 173). Vedic scriptures strongly recommend observing a complete fast on the day of Ekadasi (without drinking water). Everyone from the age of eight to eighty, irrespective of caste, gender, or any material consideration, is recommended to fast on this day to make spiritual progress.

Fasting is seen not only as a part of worship; it is also a training of the mind and the body to endure all hardships and to persevere under difficulties and not give up.

Fasting in Buddhism The Buddha’s spiritual awakening is closely linked to fasting. The moment he stopped fasting, he realized his great awakening. The story of the Buddha is in itself a lesson in fasting, as he was a prince who renounced all worldly desires in search of the truth about life. his experiences made him realize that desire was the root of all evil and of human life. Food was man’s first and most basic desire.

So, he decided to give up this desire and gain freedom from the tangles of worldly life and suffering. Initially, he at only one grain of rice and a sesame seed per day.

He soon grew so thin that he could touch his spine by pressing his stomach Virtues of fasting in Islam Allaah The Almighty has distinguished the month of Ramadhaan from other months with many characteristics and virtues. They include the following: The breath of the fasting person is better in the sight of Allaah The Almighty than the fragrance of musk.

The angels keep asking Allaah The Almighty to forgive the fasting persons until they break their fast.

Allaah The Almighty decorates His Paradise everyday and says: “My righteous servants are about to be rid of burdens and harms and then move to you.”

The devils are fettered.

The gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hellfire are closed.

There is Laylat-ul-Qadr (the Night of Divine Decree) which is better than one thousand months. Whoever is deprived from the blessings of this night has been deprived from all goodness.

The fasting people are forgiven on the last night of Ramadhaan.

Allaah The Almighty frees many people from Hell on each night of Ramadhaan.

The purpose of fasting To develop and strengthen our powers of self-control, so that we can resist wrongful desires and bad habits, and therefore

“guard against evil” . In fasting, by refraining from the natural human urges to satisfy one’s appetite, we are exercising our ability of self-restraint, so that we can then apply it to our everyday life to bring about self-improvement.

To attain nearness and closeness to God so that He becomes a reality in our lives. As we bear the rigours of fasting purely for the sake of following a Divine commandment, knowing and feeling that He can see all our actions however secret, it intensifies the consciousness of God in our hearts, resulting in a higher spiritual experience.

To learn to refrain from usurping other’s rights and belongings. In fasting we voluntarily give up even what is rightfully ours; how can then we think of taking what is not ours but belongs to someone else?

Charity and generosity is especially urged during Ramadan. We learn to give, and not to take. The deprivation of fasting makes us sympathise with the suffering of others, and desirous of alleviating it; and it makes us remember the blessings of life which we normally take for granted.

Timeline: Notable dates in Canada’s history

July 1, 1867 – The Dominion of Canada, uniting Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, comes into existence, with John A. Macdonald as first prime minister.

May 15, 1870 – Manitoba becomes Canada’s fifth province.

April 2, 1871 – The first census of the Dominion of Canada lists the population as 3,689,257.

July 20, 1871 – British Columbia enters Confederation as the nation’s sixth province.

Aug. 3, 1876 – The first telephone call between separate buildings is made by inventor Alexander Graham Bell, in Mount Pleasant, Ont., to his uncle, David Bell, in Brantford, Ont. Oct. 30, 1899 – More than 1,000 Canadian soldiers set sail from Quebec to South Africa and the Boer War. Nov. 7, 1900 – Liberal Wilfrid Laurier becomes prime minister after defeating Charles Tupper’s Conservatives.

Laurier goes on to be one of Canada’s most lauded prime ministers.

Oct. 19, 1903 – Canadian representatives on the Alaska Boundary Commission refuse to sign the commission’s decision setting the boundary between Alaska and Canada, saying virtually all American positions had been accepted.

May 14, 1904 – Canada competes in the Olympics, in St. Louis, for the first time.

July 20, 1905 – Acts proclaiming Alberta and Saskatchewan as Canada’s newest provinces receive royal assent.

Jan. 2, 1908 – The first coin is struck at the new Royal Mint building in Ottawa, ending years of importing Canadian currency from England.

Feb. 23, 1909 – John Alexander Douglas McCurdy makes the first airplane flight in the British Empire, travelling about 10 metres above the ground for almost a kilometre at Baddeck, N.S. Dec. 4, 1909 – The University of Toronto defeats the Toronto Parkdale Canoe Club 26-6 in the first Grey Cup game for a Canadian football championship.

May 14. 1912 – Ottawa divests itself of responsibility for vast tracts of northern land, granting boundary extensions to Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

April 24, 1928 – The Supreme Court rules that women are not persons, and therefore are not eligible to sit in Senate. The government later amends the British North America Act to allow women to enter Senate.

Feb. 5, 1930 – Canada’s first woman senator, Cairine Wilson, is appointed.

Oct. 1, 1930 – After negotiations with Ottawa, Alberta gains control of its natural resources. Saskatchewan and Manitoba also receive the same power that same year.

July 6, 1931 – Federal officials and the Red Cross announce plans to aid victims of a drought that has gripped the Prairies for more than a year.

Dec. 11, 1931 – The Statute of Westminster, giving dominions of the Commonwealth full legal freedom, is passed by British Parliament. May 7, 1951 – Parliament passes a motion seeking a constitutional amendment that would create pensions for all Canadians over 70.

Sept. 6, 1952 – Canada’s first television station, CBFT Montreal, begins broadcasting.

June 6, 1956 – A pipeline bill authorizing the creation of a western section of pipeline to transport natural gas to Ontario from Alberta passes second reading in the Senate. At this great occasion of Canada’s 148th birthday, I would like to congratulate all readers and advertisers and thank them for their continuous and ever-growing support. Like every year, this Canada Day edition of the Miracle is particularly special as it highlights various aspects of our beautiful country so make sure you read every page and let us know your opinion.

As Muslim Canadians, we not only have to the responsibility of being faithful and loyal to Canada but also represent our distinct religious identity in a positive manner. I am very proud that I am a Muslim and Pakistani Canadian, and it is my duty to promote not only the Canadian values but also uphold our religious morals. Nearly 70 K raised for BC Muslim School in Surrey

The BCMA Surrey Muslim School (SMS) held a fundraising dinner on June 13th at the Bombay Banquet Hall in Surrey. The school was founded in 2001 with 30 students. The school has been slowly increasing in size over the years. Many of you will recall that the school moved from rented spaces in 2 Masjids to a single leased facility that was later purchased.

The Welcome note was given by the master of ceremony Mohammad Yasin. Ibrahim Kaneko and Misbah Memon (SMS students) recited parts of Sura Yasin.

Mr. Raza Mirani VP eduacation/Chair briefely introduced Board of Education. After that, one group of SMS KG students presented “ I love Mountain” song followed by another presentation by students on Surah Rehman.

Br. Musa Ismail, President of BCMA highlighted BC Muslim School’s history and its financial position. Currently, the school is on a rental property which the association wishes to purchase thus the cost savings from the rent can actually be directed towards providing better services to the students or expanding the school to meet the ever growing needs of the community.

He said that BCMA hopes to raise at least $500K to be able to apply towards the purchase the property.

Mr. Ebrahim Bawa, Principal of-Surrey Muslim School gave introduction of guest speaker, Dr. Munir El- Kasim who highlighted the importance of establishing Muslim Schools and the long term benefits to the overall community for

raising children in an Islamic environment. Most importantly, supporting such projects is an obligation upon each Muslim.

Closing remarks were given

by Principal of SMS. Before the Dinner Duaa was made by BCMA Imam.

Approximately $70K were collected and commitment of Qard-Hasna (Interest Free Loans) were made by individuals to reach at least fifty percent of the target, at $250K. Miracle Media encourages all our readers that during this month of Ramadan please consider donating towards this noble cause by directing at least some of the donation to the Surrey Muslim School.

Al -Ihsaan Women’s Vocational

Centre of Bangladesh Fundraising Alhumdulillah, with the Mercy of Allah (SWT) and the generosity of all the donors, Al -Ihsaan Women’s Vocational Centre of Bangladesh (a project of Human Concern International of Canada) had another successful fundraising dinner on June 13th at York Conference Center in Surrey. Even though we were short by approximately $20,000 (Which we are confident that brothers and sister will give during the blessed month of Ramadan), we still consider this event a success. First and foremost, it allowed us to gather approximately 300 Muslims together in one place for the sake of Allah (SWT). This one its own is a great success; may Allah (SWT) join us all together in Jannah. You have filled our hearts with great fortitude and encouragement, not only to continue this great journey but to increase our efforts and dedication to surmount all the obstacles that present themselves. The board of Al Ihsaan would like to thank each and every participant, present or not, for their generosity and continued support for this project. The guest speaker, Sheikh Ahmad Shehab, once again sacrificed his time, left his wife, eight children and grandchild to be with us for this awesome event. Sheikh Shehab did an amazing job, as usual, in motivating the audience and reminding them of their duties to Allah (SWT). We ask Allah (SWT) to shower Sh. Shehab and his family with blessings and re-unite them in Al Firdaos. Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank all

the volunteers that made this event happen.

Their relentless efforts should be an example to all.

How can we begin to thank you all?

Our meagre response is to offer our duah’ to Allah for His infinite Mercy and Benevolence to us. In fact may Allah in His infinity kindness bless you all?

We believe that the sisters from Al-Ihsan will, in sha Allah, leave an indelible legacy on their community. Canadians are generous people. The latest available statistics show that in 2010 some 84% of Canadians donated a total of $10.6 billion to charities, an average of $446 each. Their main motivations for giving are to help those in need, to support causes they believe in, and to contribute to their communities.

Governments across Canada provide generous support for people who claim donations against their income tax. The federal tax credit is 15% for donations below $200, and 29% for donations above $200.

Combined with provincial tax credits, this significantly reduces the cost of making a donation.

But proportionately, not very many Canadians take advantage of the tax credit. In 2010, only 23.4% claimed the charitable tax credit, down significantly from the almost 30% who did so in 1990.

Most people aren’t motivated to give by the tax credit, so why should it matter whether they claim it, as long as they keep on giving?

Here’s what the tax credit means for someone making that average donation of $446.

Depending on where you live, the after-tax cost of that $446 donation ranges from

$262 for Quebec residents, to $308 for someone living in Nunavut. If someone is already generous, but wants to do even more, claiming the tax credit means more money in their pocket that they can donate to their favourite cause.

And for people that haven’t been donating, maybe because they think they can’t afford to, or who haven’t been claiming tax credits – the system is even more generous for the next few years. In 2013 the federal government announced the First-Time Donor’s Super Credit, which adds an extra 25% to the charitable tax credit for eligible donors. If someone qualifies, that $446 average donation will actually only cost them anywhere from $151 to $197.

Fewer than one-quarter of Canadians cite the tax credit as a reason for donating, and fewer than one-quarter claim the tax credit.

Perhaps they believe that it isn’t appropriate to be “rewarded� for doing good. But seen in a different light, the tax credit is actually a very effective tool to help people who are already supporting their communities, to direct tax dollars that they would have paid into organizations and causes that they believe are having a real impact.

The baby boom generation – statistically the most generous donors – is retiring, which means less disposable income for many of them. This, combined with the challenges of engaging younger Canadians who have different ways of expressing their commitment to their communities – not to mention, different financial pressures than previous generations have faced – creates new challenges in ensuring that donations stay at a level that allows charities to make the enormous contributions they do to our communities and quality of life. Thinking more strategically about our giving, and about the impact that tax credits can have on our giving, is a vital piece of the puzzle.

Alexander A Al lex exan and an der Gr der de G Graham rah aham ham B Bell ell el ll Alexander Graham Bell, the man considered to be one of the most important inventors of the 19th century, was born March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Even though he was not born in Canada, many of his greatest scientific discoveries were made on Canadian soil. Perhaps because his mother was a gifted pianist, Alexander displayed an aptitude for all things associated with sound and pitch. This early curiosity marked the beginning of Bell’s lifelong fascination with sound and speech. In 1870, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Brantford, Ontario, where Alexander fully recovered. At the age of 23, Alexander relocated to Boston, Massachusetts where he worked to publicize his father’s Visible Speech system It was in Brantford that Bell’s greatest idea was born. While relaxing atop the bluff he referred to as “his dreaming place,” Bell allowed himself to brainstorm about a “harmonic telegraph” device he was working on. Alexander figured that if he could make an electric current undulate the same way air does when sound is produced, he could definitely transmit speech telegraphically. This daydream became the basis for the invention of the telephone. Bell needed an assistant to actualize his idea and he found the perfect match in Thomas Watson, a gifted young electrician and model maker.

After patenting the invention and staging a demonstration of the telephone at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, Bell went on to form the Bell Telephone Company in 1877.

Throughout his life, he worked closely with the American Association for the Promotion of the Teaching of Speech to ensure deaf people were not marginalized or excluded from everyday life. Free from financial constraints, he devoted the remainder of his life to inventing, and many of his most inspired creations were developed at Beinn Bhreagh.

Though he is best known for the telephone, Bell was responsible for several other key inventions.

Thirty years after Bell’s death on August 2, 1922, the Canadian government constructed the Alexander Graham Bell National Historical Site in Baddeck, Nova

Tommy Douglas 1961. For more than 50 years, his staunch devotion to social causes, rousing powers of speech and pugnacious charm made Tommy C. Douglas an unstoppable political force.

The child of Scottish immigrants, Douglas spent his formative years in Winnipeg, Manitoba in a home where politics, philosophy and religion were side dishes at the dinner table. When money was tight, Douglas and his two sisters had to drop in and out of school as they worked occasional jobs to help pay the bills. His family’s socialist leanings were solidified after Douglas was hospitalized at the age of 10. Due to a bone infection suffered four years earlier, Douglas’s knee required several operations. The surgery saved

Douglas’s leg and would serve as his inspiration for his dream of universally accessible medical care. Not long after this, Douglas would witness firsthand the violent end of Canada’s first general strike on a day known as “Bloody Saturday”. After nine years in the House of Commons polishing his fiery public-speaking talent, Douglas was elected the leader of the provincial CCF in Saskatchewan. With interest in socialism peaking in post-war Canada, the party won a landslide victory in 1944 and Douglas found himself an instant celebrity as the head of North America’s first-ever socialist government. Amid widespread skepticism, Premier Douglas mobilized aggressively, passing more than 100 bills during his first term. Elected to five terms, he introduced Saskatchewan residents to car insurance, labour reforms and his long-standing dream of universal Medicare. But the years spent reforming his home province worked against him when he made his transition to national politics. The NDP won only 19 seats, and Douglas lost his cherished seat in Regina.

Douglas continued to promote his socialist policy through the 1960s.

Tommy Douglas’s legacy as a social policy innovator lives on.

Social welfare, universal Medicare, old age pensions and mothers’ allowances -- Douglas helped keep these ideas, and many more, watching as more established political parties eventually came to accept these once-radical ideas as their own.

Terry Fox was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer). Terry decided he wanted to help find a cure for cancer. Knowing that cancer research was severely under-funded in Canada, Terry decided to run across the country to raise money, and awareness, for cancer research. With fierce determination, Terry started his fund raising journey on April 12, 1980 in St John’s, Newfoundland. By February, 1981 Terry’s wish of raising one dollar from every Canadian was realized - the Marathon of Hope fund totalled $24.17 million. Terry died of cancer in June, 1981 at age 22. To date, over $400 million has been raised worldwide in Terry’s name. All funds raised in Canada support cancer research and are distributed by The National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC). The annual event continues to be known as The Terry Fox Run; the structural organization is known as The Terry Fox Foundation.

The Terry Fox Foundation strives to keep the heroic effort and integrity that Terry embodied alive, while recognizing the duality of its mandate. The thousands of volunteers who organize more than 10,000 Run sites around the world have made the Terry Fox Run the success it is. Each year, millions of participants walk, jog and bike in memory of Terry Fox every year to raise money for cancer research. Rick Hansen Following a car crash at the age of 15, Rick sustained a spinal cord injury that paralyzed him from the waist down. Rick was the first student with a physical disability

to graduate in Physical Education from the University of British Columbia. He went on to become a world class athlete, winning 19 international wheelchair marathons, including three world championships, and competed for Canada in the 1984 Olympic Games. As a positive role model dedicated to improving the world around him, Rick has a remarkable ability to engage and motivate youth. Today, Rick is still a Man In Motion. As President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, Rick remains committed to making communities more accessible and inclusive for people with a spinal cord injury, and advancing spinal cord research. Through Rick’s leadership, the Foundation has generated over $200 million for spinal cord injury related programs and initiatives. Rick lives in Richmond BC with his wife, Amanda, and their three daughters Emma, Alana and Rebecca.

A bright student from a young age, Suzuki enrolled in Amherst College in Massachusetts on a scholarship in 1954. After seeing what effect he was having, he made the move to national broadcasting in 1971 as host of the weekly CBC Television show Suzuki on Science. In 1979, Suzuki became the host of The Nature of Things. In 1990, he founded the David Suzuki Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding innovative solutions to help conserve the natural world. Suzuki has been awarded numerous recognitions, including a UNESCO prize for science, a United Nations Environment Program medal and an induction as an Officer of the Order of Canada. He has 15 honorary doctorates from universities in Canada, the U.S. and Australia.

Now retired from teaching, Suzuki has dedicated himself full-time to educating the public about the importance of the natural world.

Trudeau campaigned vigorously for the “No” supporters in the Quebec referendum in 1980.

Prepare Your Canadian Citizenship

The Citizenship Residency Requirement Under the Citizenship Act, an applicant for Canadian citizenship must have resided in Canada for at least 3 years in the 4 years immediately preceding submission of the citizenship application.

For individuals who have been a permanent resident for the last four years, this is an easy calculation. You simply add up the days that you spent outside the country, and confirm that you were present in Canada for at least 1095 days.

For individuals who have been a permanent resident for less than four years, the calculation may be more complicated. If you became a permanent resident three years ago, and you never left Canada for more than 24 hours at a time since becoming a permanent resident, then – voila! – you meet the residency requirement. But if you did take international trips since becoming a permanent resident, then you need to make some more sophisticated calculations in order to qualify for citizenship. And you’re only in a position to make these “sophisticated calculations” if you lived in Canada before you became a permanent resident and within the last four years. If you did not live in Canada before you became a permanent resident, or if the time that you lived in Canada before becoming a permanent resident is outside the “last 4 year” range - then you need to wait until you accumulate those 1095 days before applying. But if you did live in Canada before becoming a permanent resident, and within the last 4 years, then you might have some additional options.

The time you resided in Canada before you became a permanent resident counts as 1/2 time. This means that for every

two days that you resided in Canada since becoming a permanent resident, you can count one of them as fulfilling the 1095 days obligation. So if you lived in Canada for a year before becoming a permanent resident, and you were present in Canada for 100% of that year, you can add 182 days to the number of total days you have spent in Canada since becoming a permanent resident.

Individuals who have been a permanent resident of Canada for less than 3 years can also use this benefit. For example, if

you have been a permanent resident for only two years and have spent a total of 730 days in Canada, you can still qualify for citizenship if you lived in Canada for the two years immediately preceding your acquisition of permanent resident Status, but only if you never took a trip outside of Canada in those two years.

It’s a generous calculation system: one that tries to give as many advantages as possible to applicants, so that you can apply as quickly as possible for the benefit of Canadian citizenship. You should be aware, however, that there are certain periods of time . spent in Canada- that will

not help you meet the residence requirement. For example, time that you spent serving in jail will not count towards the residence requirement.

If you think that you meet the residence requirement, you can get started with your citizenship application now. Don’t worry about making a mistake with your calculation - we’ll make sure that you meet the residence requirement before you submit your application.

Applying for Canadian Citizenship Congratulations on making it this far! Becoming a citizen is the final step in the immigration process. It signifies your commitment to Canada and your intention to contribute to your adopted country as a member of its citizenry.

It is a big step, and it’s important to approach it with care.

Who Can Apply for Canadian Citizenship To become a Canadian citizen, you must meet the following basic eligibility requirements: • You must be at least 18 years of age.

• You must be a Permanent Resident of Canada.

• You must have resided in Canada for at least three of the last four years.

• You must not have any criminal prohibitions.

• You must pass the Citizenship Test and Interview.

In the name of Allah, the most Gracious and the most Merciful!

All praises belong to Allah, the Lord of the Universe.

My respected Brothers and Sisters: Assalam-u-Alaykum – wa Rahamatullahi – wa Barakatahu.

The BC Muslim Association wishes you and your loved ones a very blessed month of Ramadan The month of Ramadan has once again come with its mercies, blessings and forgiveness. This month is the month of the Quraan, a Book whose light will never fade.

Ramadan is a period of fasting, reflection, devotion, generosity and sacrifice observed

by Muslims around the world. Ramadan is a golden chance for those who want to bring themselves nearer and closer to Allah, for those who wish their sins to be forgiven, and for those who wish to be freed from the Hell-fire.

Muslims are called upon to use this month to re-evaluate their lives, make peace with those who have wronged us, strengthen ties with family and friends, and to do away with bad habits -- essentially to clean up our lives, our thoughts, and our feelings. The Arabic word for “fasting” (sawm) literally means “to refrain” - and it means not only refraining from food and drink, but from evil actions, thoughts, and words. Fasting helps us to take control of our emotions and helps us to develop taqwa or consciousness of Allah.

Ramadan is also a time for us to remember and sympathize with those who are fasting every day of their lives, not by choice, not because they want to fast, but because of poverty. They simply don’t have enough to

eat or drink.

We, who enjoy clean drinking water, hot meals every day, and a warm comfortable home must r e m e m ber that we are very fortunate to have these blessings.

Ramadan is a time to remember others less fortunate. It’s a time to show Compassion and Mercy by paying your Fitra before the end of the month of Ramadan so that those in need can receive the money before Eid to buy the basic needs. Further, if you have not paid you Zakat for the past year, this is the opportune time to do so in order to fulfill your obligations and acquire the maximum rewards. It must be noted that with influx of many Muslim refugees to our part of the world, the demand for zakat is escalating and we need all the help you can provide to help these incoming families.

May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and guide us all to the Straight Path.

May Allah bless us all during Ramadan, and throughout the year, with his forgiveness, mercy, and peace, and bring us all closer to Him and to each other.

Weekend Islamic School, Masjid Al-Salaam & Education Centre By: Nuzhat Hafeez Staff and students of Week End Islamic School, Masjid Al-salaam and Education center, Burnaby celebrated the final year event and the third annual Quran Competition Award Ceremony on Saturday, June 13th.

BCMA Burnaby Branch chairpersons Br. Daud Ismail and Sister Hazra congratulated the winners and thanked to all the staff, students and volunteers for their hard work and achievements. Sister Nuzhat (Principal) emphasized in her speech regarding the school’s accomplishments in particular the importance of school children learning Quran with Tajweed rules. Workshops, projects, presentations, mandatory salat and Zikir after fard prayer, adab of Masjid, adab of Ja’amah, and the hard work of school teacher are all contributing towards developing love of Allah, love of all human beings, a sense of tolerance and discipline among the students.

The performances from Pre-K to Level 6 classes were unique, and admirable. The teachers and parents helped the students from L3 onwards to do research on unique projects such as parents’ and children’s’ rights. sters’ research and presentations.

The Third Quran Competition Winners were awarded their trophies. This year like in previous years, the students went through examinations by school teachers and then by external examiners. A generous donor had contributed by donating Quran with translations and tafseer by M.A.S Abdel Haleem to all the first place winners. All the first to 3rd winners were awarded a trophy. The 4th winners were given books.

This was followed by a concluding speech by Imam Yahya Momla, who reminded the parents about the importance of concentrating on Islamic education at home in particular about setting the right priorities during the month of Ramadhan. He reminded us all that Islamic education is a conscious effort and that only by leading example can young parents ensure that we raise a new generation that understands, and then practices, Islam.

A lively, entertaining and educational event came to its conclusion, with the audience being invited to partake in a light lunch. This event marked yet another milestone for the school with another successful year coming to an end. The continuous growth, improvements and development within the school are a testament to the dedication of its administration, teachers, board and volunteers.

Muslims commemorate this month as the month of the Qur’an. This month is celebrated greatly all over the world. At the end of the day, at iftar, Muslims gather, eat together, and participate in the religious festivities like dhikr, Qur’an recitation and prayer. These traditions are well revived, by the AICP, with Muslim families in British Columbia, as well.

This year, Ramadan in British Columbia will be during the month of June & July. Recognizing this holy month of Ramadan is a good way for Muslim to remember both the di-

versity and shared values of many Muslims worldwide. To do this, the AICP welcomed the blessed month of Ramadan with a celebration on Saturday, June 20th at its center at 553 Front Street, New Westminster.

The celebration started with a moving Qur’an recitation for some verses that remind Muslims of the Hereafter and the need to adhere to obedience. After that, The AICP Chants Group presented some heartwarming Islamic chants about Ramadan and its virtues as well as the love of Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him. A speech about the merits and the conducts learned in Ramadan was presented after that. The celebration was followed by a group iftar in which Muslims from all backgrounds gathered and enjoyed the fulfilment of an obedience to Allah.

The AICP wishes the Muslim community a rewardable blessed month, peace and prosperity.

Next morning wash the soaked brown chickpeas again in cold water and boil them in pressure pressure cooker.

Water should be dry completely Grind them in chopper.

Combine the boiled potato , rice powder, cornfl our,salt,black pepper powder, red chilly powder with chopped brown chickpeas and well beaten egg whites and prepare a dough.

Add chopped onions, and chopped coriander leaves. shape the dough into small kebabs.

Heat oil in a frying pan and deep fry all kebabs in it .

The road will not always be smooth, in fact throughout our travels, we will encounter many challenges.

Some of these challenges will test our courage, strengths, weaknesses, and faith. Along the way, we may stumble upon obstacles that will come between the paths that we are destined to take. In order to follow the right path, we must overcome these obstacles. Sometimes these obstacles are really blessings in disguise, only we don’t realize that at the time.

Along our journey we will be confronted with many situations, some will be filled with joy, and some will be filled with heartache.

How we react to what we are faced with determines what kind of outcome the rest of our journey through life will be like.

When things don’t always go our way, we have two choices in dealing with the situations. We can focus on the fact that things didn’t go how we had hoped they would and let life pass us by and secondly we can make the best out of the situation and know that these are only temporary setbacks and find the lessons that are to be learned.

Time stops for no one and if we allow ourselves to focus on the negative we might miss out on some really amazing things that life has to offer. We can’t go back to the past, we can only take the lessons that we have learned and the experiences that we have gained from it and move on. It is because of the heartaches, as well as the hardships that in the end help to make us a stronger person.

The people that we meet on our journey, are people that we are destined to meet. Everybody comes into our lives for some reason or another and we don’t always know their

purpose until it is too late.

They all play some kind of role.

Some may stay for a lifetime while others may only stay for a short while.

It is often the people who stay for only a short time that end up making a lasting impression not only in our lives, but in our hearts as well. Although we may not realize it at the time, they will make a difference and change our lives in a way we never could imagine. To think that one person can have such a profound effect on your life forever is truly a blessing. It is because of these encounters that we learn some of life’s best lessons and sometimes we even learn a little bit about ourselves.

People will come and go into our lives quickly, but sometimes we are lucky to meet that one special person that will stay in our hearts forever no matter what. Even though we may not always end up being with that person and they may not always stay in our life for as long as we like, the lessons that we have learned from them and the experiences that we have gained from meeting that person, will stay with us forever.

It’s these things that will give us strength to continue on with our journey. We know that we can always look back on those times of our past and know that because of that one individual, we are who we are and we can remember the wonderful moments that we have shared with that person.

Having Trouble Staying Organised at Home?

We hate to break it to you, but it might be you (not your stuff) that’s the problem. We asked professional organizers to reveal common decluttering missteps they often see tripping up people’s best intentions.

1. “If I’m not organized, I must be doing everything wrong.”

“When I’m working with a client, I always start by looking for what’s going right,” says Jeni Aron (aka the Clutter Cowgirl). “People often already have systems in place, but don’t realize it.”

Jeni says this could be as obvious as using your closet’s hangers, or owning a hook for your keys. Noticing how you already operate in your home is a good way to start tweaking how you keep organized. “Organizing doesn’t have to be an orchestra of scientific systems.” says Jeni.

2. “The solution to decluttering is buying lots of bins and boxes.”

“Buying stuff does not equal being organized,” says Maeve Richmond, founder of the organizing coaching service Maeve’s Method. “When you get that plastic tub home, it isn’t going to tell you what to do. People don’t want to admit that emotions will come up, but you have to face your clutter and make decisions about it to really move through roadblocks.”It’s also much more practical to take stock of your stuff (and start paring it down), before you head to The Container Store: “You don’t really know what sort of system you need until you know

how much stuff you’re keeping,” says Jeni.

3. “I don’t need a clear space to start organizing.”

It might seem daunting, but you really need to go through everything and start with a blank slate to build better habits and take stock of what you own. Don’t attempt to organize without clearing out the space first,” says Amelia Meena, personal organizer and founder of Appleshine. “People don’t trust themselves to take everything apart to help declutter, but you need to deconstruct to reconstruct.”

4. “I can’t get rid of anything that was given to me as a gift.”

“Interestingly enough, it’s just as hard for us to get rid of free stuff, as it is to get rid of expensive stuff,” says Amelia. “But if someone gave you something you never use (or don’t even like!), you should let it go. Recognize that all stuff has an expiration date, and you’ll avoid the guilt factor.”

5. “Aunt Sheila would love this [insert item you don’t want]!”

“Don’t displace your clutter to someone else,” says Jeni. “First of all, it takes time away from you tackling your own home. Plus, unless you’re getting rid of a brand new Coach bag, no one wants your stuff. Don’t make your clutter someone else’s problem — donate, sell, or throw out things you don’t want.”

6. “I should devote my entire weekend to organizing my whole house.”

“That’s like saying, ‘I want to start running, why don’t I start with a marathon?’” says Jeni.

She recommends fighting the urge to organize your entire home at once, since you need time to truly consider a smart plan for each space (and you’ll probably burn out before you’re done).

It’s tempting to strive for perfection while decluttering, but if you make things too complicated (or too perfect), you might actually erase your good intentions. “Paper clutter is a major issue, but people tend to over-file,” says Jeni.

“Day-to-day you don’t need a system that is micromanaged. For instance, one file that says ‘dental work’ that carries over from year to year is totally sufficient. It’s not like you need the material at your fingertips every day.”

8. “There’s one right way to be organized.”

Know that it’s OK to do things differently if “normal” systems don’t work for you.”If clients get frustrated by putting clothes on hangers, I might suggest we try a pegboard or a system with boxes,” says Amelia. “Learn what works for your habits.”

9. “Once I get organized, I’ll never have to think about it again.”

“Face it: Life changes,” says Maeve. “It’s unrealistic to think that a system created one year will work perfectly the next. The key maintaining your organization is to remain flexible and be prepared to reevaluate solutions that have broken down.”

Working moms have more successful daughters and more caring sons, Harvard Business School study says

By Gabriel Fisher The guilt many working mothers confess to may be real, but it’s looking less and less warranted.

According to a working paper (pdf) published June 19 by the Harvard Business School, daughters of working mothers are more likely to be employed, hold supervisory positions, and earn more money than the daughters of women who don’t work outside the home. The researchers also found a statistically significant effect on the sons of working women, who are likely to spend more time caring for family members and doing household chores than are the sons of stay-at-home mothers.

Analyzing data from two dozen countries, the researchers concluded that the daughters of employed mothers are 4.5% more likely to be employed themselves than are the daughters of stay-at-home mothers. While this number may seem small, it is statistically significant at the 99% level, meaning

there is less than a 1% chance that such a result is due to chance.

Even more surprising, says Kathleen McGinn, a professor at Harvard Business School and the lead author of the study, is the effect that working mothers have on their daughters’ chances of being a supervisor at work. “We did expect that it would effect employment but we didn’t expect that it would effect supervisory responsibility,” she tells Quartz.

Even after controlling for gender attitudes— to take beliefs regarding gender roles out of the equation—the researchers found that 33% of daughters of working mothers held supervisory roles, compared to only 25% of daughters of stay-at-home moms. “What I take away is that employed mothers create an environment in which their children’s attitudes on what is appropriate for girls to do and what is appropriate for boys to do is affected,” McGinn says.

The study was based on national-level data,

as well as individual-level survey data collected across 24 countries by the International Social Survey Programme in 2002 and 2012. In particular, the researchers examined results from a survey question that asked respondents whether, during their childhood, their mother had ever spent a year or more working full- or part-time; then they regressed these responses against a host of variables to test the outcomes.

McGinn says that the effects of working mothers were most striking in countries labeled in the study as “stagnating moderates,” a category that included both the US and the UK. These are countries where respondents generally held moderate views about gender issues and egalitarianism in 2002, and where the attitudes remained roughly the same 10 years later.

McGinn says that the income of daughters of working mothers in the US was $5,200 higher than that of daughters of women who stayed at home, when controlling for gender

attitudes.

Her message for working mothers is that being employed has long-lasting, positive effects on children. “When you go to work, you are helping your children understand that there are lots of opportunities for them,” McGinn says.

Canada-England encounter looks to be another nail-biter at Women’s World Cup

Expect another nail-biter as Canada takes on England in Saturday’s quarter-final at the Women’s World Cup. Canada’s two wins at the tournament — it also has two ties — have been by one-goal margins. Four of its last five matches with England were decided by one goal. “They’ve been really, really tight encounters,” Herdman told a media conference call Tuesday in his first public comments since England beat Norway 2-1 to earn a date with Canada at B.C. Place Stadium. “And I think that’s what it’s going to be. I don’t think you can pick an underdog for this game. And I don’t even want to pitch it like that. When you get into a quarter-final, it’s just game on for both teams. Regardless of where you’re ranked, regardless of what your results have been prior to that game, both teams are just going to come and go for it.” All four of England’s tournament games, three of which were wins, have been decided by one goal.

“The difference will be who unlocks the defence,” Herdman said. “Will it be a set play or will it be just a moment of magic from an individual player? Silva said advice from his father, who has coached him since youth, had been instrumental to reaching triple figures. “Long before this tour started, my father told me to work on a couple of shots and implement that in the series, so I could be improving,” Silva said. “So I began working on that about a month and a half before the tour. I worked pretty hard with [coach] Marvan [Atapattu] aiya, and it was important to me to perfect my cut and pull. That was an advantage to me in the last game. I got a lot of scoring opportunities that way.

Need to unsettle Yasir Shah - Silva Scoring more frequently off Yasir Shah may be Sri Lanka’s best chance of neutralising him, opener Kaushal Silva said ahead of the second Test in Colombo, beginning on Thursday. Yasir had been excellent in the first innings in Galle, but was devastating in the second, claiming 7 for 76 to send the hosts spiralling to a 10-wicket loss. Sri Lanka’s batsmen were reticent against him in both innings, and did not score more than 2.6 runs off a Yasir over, on average. Frustrated by long scoreless periods, several batsmen also fell hitting out, but a more measured method may be effective against him, Silva said. “I think when you have a good bowler, you have to put pressure on him to receive loose balls,” Silva said. “As batsmen, we have to put him under pressure, because if we play the same way, he’ll keep putting the

ball in that same spot. If he does that, it’s difficult to play the strokes we want. If we use our feet, we should be able to get singles and twos, and the odd four. We’ve got to rotate the strike. If we do that, he can’t settle down and bowl at one batsman.” Siva said Yasir’s control was the most impressive aspect of his bowling, though he did possess the usual leg spinner’s variations as well. “His accuracy is excellent, and the other thing is that he bowls quite quickly. He’s usually in the 85-90kph range, which is faster than most spinners. He does use variations - but he also uses speed well. He bowls his legbreak fast often, and slow sometimes - the googly is the same. He does use the flipper often as well.
