THE PERSISTENT PAINFUL PLIGHT OF THE ROHINGYA Buddhism is considered to be one of the most peaceful, compassionate and loving religions of the world as disseminated by Siddharta Gautam thousands of years ago. However, the inhuman butchering of Rohingya Muslims by the Buddhist monks suggests totally the opposite. After having been persecuted in Myanmar for over three decades, the 1.3 million Rohingya Muslims have been subjected to an increased persecution since 2012, while the international community merely waits for Myanmar to democratise. Joke!

At least 120,000 Rohingyas were rounded up into camps as a Buddhist national movement is aimed at pushing them out of the country. The result has been that most Rohingya are now looking for a way out of the country, which has led to a dangerous international human trafficking network borne out of the sheer desperation of the Rohingya people.

Over the last year, at least 90,000 Rohingya have left the country in dingy boats looking for greener pastures, but no country is willing to let them in. Neighbouring countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Bangladesh, have merely attempted to clamp down on their movement, but no one has promised them a new home.

The United Nations estimates more than 100,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar by sea since ethnic and sectarian violence erupted. Sadly, the government has forcibly segregated Rohingya from the rest of the population in Rakhine state. Their own country refuses to recognize them as a legitimate ethnic group and as citizens of Myanmar.

Thus, the persecuted community faces daily prejudice and many restrictions

on their movements, family size and job opportunities.

Financially sound Rohingya Muslims escape to more vulnerability as they are taken out on small boats to cargo ships by smugglers, mostly bound for Malaysia. Thailand is the first stop on the most common trafficking route used by criminals preying upon the desperate Rohingya as well as Bangladeshis seeking to escape poverty.

The U.N. human rights chief said the deadly pattern of migration by sea across the Bay of Bengal would continue unless Myanmar itself ends discrimination.

After years of turning a blind eye to the exodus, Myanmar’s navy in the last fortnight discovered two boats with more than 900 migrants who were brought to Rakhine. It classes them as illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh, even though many trace their origins back through generations.

The boat people were brought ashore in Indonesia, but other vessels crammed with migrants were sent back to sea despite a UN call to rescue thousands adrift in Southeast Asian waters with dwindling supplies of food and water.

UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for refugees) seeks US$13 million to help with the needs of new boat arrivals in South-East Asia, where thousands of refugees and migrants have been crossing the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Pakistan contribution: Chairman Imran Khan(PTI) has protested against this persecution of Muslims in Myanmar and has strongly urged the UN Secretary-General to immediately take action under Chapter VII of the UN Charter to ameliorate the plight of the Muslims in this unfortunate land.

And, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved all the recommendations of the Special Committee regarding the plight of Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar including $5 million in food assistance.

The prime minister will also be writing to the United Nations (UN) Secretary General to express Pakistan’s stance on the issue of the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

The statement went on to say that the PM will also write a letter regarding the issue to the UN Security Council.

The statement further said that PM Nawaz will inform the UN in detail about the nature of the crisis.

Solidarity Day: The Pakistan Senate on Tuesday approved a resolution against the persecution of Rohingya Muslims

in Myanmar declaring June 12 as the day of solidarity with the Muslims in Myanmar. It went on to say that the government should take up the issue with the United Nations (UN) as well as the international community. The resolution further stated that the government of Pakistan should also take the matter to the International Court of Justice. It also stated that a Pakistani delegation should be sent to Myanmar to communicate Pakistan’s stance on the issue.

Malaysia contributed to some extent as it has been a sort of Promised Land for Rohingya Muslims fleeing persecution in Myanmar. The tens of thousands who endured perilous journeys to get there find more work opportunities than in Indonesia and a more Muslim-friendly environment than in Thailand.

Pakistan together with the organization of Islamic countries (OIC) and the Arab league should proceed to help out the suffering Rohingia Muslims; they must openly condemn the atrocities unleashed by the hard-line military regime in Myanmar.

The international community should be pushing Myanmar to take care of their own people. Surely, the UN must impose sanctions on Myanmar, sooner the better.

Conservative lip service won’t solve retirement income crisis By: Scott Brison, MP Liberal Party of Canada Finance Critic More and more Canadians are worried about their retirement, yet Stephen Harper is offering them little more than lip-service for the problem.

A new CIBC report shows that millions of Canadians face a “steep decline in living standards” in retirement. Personal debt in Canada is at a record high. Meanwhile, three-quarters of private sector workers don’t have a workplace pension plan. The average 35-year-old puts aside less than half of what their parents did at the same age. On average, baby boomers’ retirement savings are short $400,000.

If we don’t find a solution to this problem now, Canadians will pay with higher costs later on.

Instead of helping, Mr. Harper has made things worse. He eliminated Income Trusts,

destroying about $25-billion in value from Canadians’ savings. He also broke his word by delaying Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement until the age of 67, taking over $30,000 away from each vulnerable senior.

His only “solutions” have been a collection of tax breaks for wealthier households.

None of these changes have helped ease the pending crisis for Canadians anxious about their future.

What we need is a modest, phased-in expansion of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

The CPP, along with the Quebec Pension Plan, is a defined-benefit pension plan that covers every Canadian worker, in every job, in every province. Actuaries have declared it sound for 75 years—the furthest they will go for any plan. But its benefits are too low. The average CPP monthly benefit is only about $640.

Mr. Harper has blocked every effort from the provinces to enhance the CPP. His infamous “firewall” letter even called on Alberta to withdraw from the pension plan entirely. Now, on the eve of an election, he’s promising a study on changes to the CPP. But a study won’t protect Canadians in their golden years.

Canadians work hard. They deserve a pension plan that they can depend on for a dignified retirement.

Liberals are committed to working with the provinces and territories to expand the CPP and lift the retirement savings of all Canadians.

A Liberal government will also restore the starting age for OAS and GIS to 65.

While Canadian courts have required government to allow access to marijuana when authorized by a physician, the law is clear that this must be done in a controlled fashion to protect public health and safety. This process is already in place with high security licensed producers ‎using secure mail. ‎The evidence is clear that when youth smoke marijuana they have increased risks of mental health issues including psychosis and schizophrenia.

According to the Canadian Drug Use Monitoring Survey, marijuana use by youth has dropped by almost 45% since 2004 thanks to our efforts to educate families.

This same survey reported that while 20% of youth smoked marijuana in 2012, 70% drank alcohol. Regulating marijuana in the same manner as alcohol could mean tripling its use by youth.

Designs of Indian politicians to be foiled: COAS

Taking note of the recent anti-Pakistan rhetoric by Indian politicians, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif warned on Wednesday that Pakistan will defeat their designs and defend Pakistan’s territorial integrity at all costs. “No one should dare cast an evil eye on Pakistan,” the army chief said while addressing the formation commanders’ conference here at the General Headquarters.According to DG ISPR Asim Bajwa, General Raheel paid rich tributes to the officers and men of the Pakistan Army for the phenomenal successes in Operation Zarb-e-Azb and the sacrifices they have rendered for the defence of the motherland.

The COAS said that the terrorists had been dislodged from their strongholds in North Waziristan and Khyber Agency and the fight was now moving into the last few pockets close to the Afghan border. Laying emphasis on the continuation of the operations till the elimination of the last expected and probable terrorist groups and sanctuaries, he exhorted the commanders to take all measures to prevent the escape of trapped terrorists.

“With the entire nation standing behind us, we will remain focused on achieving the objective of a terror-free and peaceful Pakistan,” the army chief said.Underscoring Pakistan’s multiple and complicated challenges, the COAS ex-

pressed his optimism, saying that the Pakistani nation was the most resilient nation in the world and was already on its way to emerging victorious out of these testing times. “Our main collective aim is to make Pakistan a secure, strong and prosperous country,” he said.

The formation commanders’ conference reiterated its resolve to defeat India’s designs and defend the territorial integrity of Pakistan at all costs with a befitting response to any misadventure against the country. “The conference took serious notice of the recent Indian hostile rhetoric coupled with its covert and overt actions to destabilise Pakistan and reiterated its resolve to defeat the Indian politicians’ designs and defendthe territorial integrity of Pakistan,” the ISPR said.

The formation commanders conference said it was highly regrettable that Indian politicians not only indulge in actions that are in violation of the United Nations Charter but also take pride in claiming their interference in the internal affairs of other states. General Raheel presided over the conference. It was attended by corps commanders, principal staff officers and all formation commanders.The forum was given comprehensive briefings on security environment and professional issues. FBR sees no hope for recovery of money in Swiss accounts The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Wednesday dashed hopes of any success in recovering the money stashed by Pakistanis in Swiss accounts.

Shahid Hussain Asad, Member, Inland Revenue (Policy), FBR, in a testimony before the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue stated that it was easy to grab headlines, but practically it was not so easy.

The committee, led by Senator Salim H Mandviwala of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), is reviewing proposals for the federal budget 2015-16.

Responding to questions, Mr Asad said the US was the only country that got a breakthrough to have access to Swiss accounts of its citizens. Even Germany was nominally successful while authorities in France initially purchased some data regarding foreign accounts of its citizens but then gave up the idea on moral grounds. Mr Asad said the only route to know about Pakistani citizens’ funds in Swiss accounts was under Article 26 of the avoidance of double taxation treaty that empowers a nation after signing the treaty to seek information regarding specific persons for specific reason but even that law did not allow to demand general information from Switzerland.

“Forget about Swiss accounts, we cannot secure general information from the UAE regarding investments by Pakistani in real estate there,” he said.

He said real estate companies published full-page advertisements in Pakistani media seeking investment from Pa-

kistanis and the government had been seeking their data but they don’t cooperate.

In the presence of the entire economic team of the government except the finance minister, Mr Asad said the FBR had raided investment booths set up by UAE firms in Pakistan which they abandoned and disappeared, but the UAE authorities did not provide data.

He said the only hope would be when Pakistan joins a global forum after 2017 under which Pakistan could automatically have access to information about its citizens having accounts in foreign banks and they would have access to our system automatically.

Some senators were of the view that tangible success to broaden the tax net could be made unless Pakistan was able to bring back $97-100 billion stashed in Swiss accounts or elsewhere through illegal means, including tax-evasion.

“This is a lot of money and unless you make a serious effort to bring it back, Pakistan would have to depend on IMF doleouts,” remarked Senator Mushahid Hussain.

NA passes resolution condemning genocide of Rohingya Muslims The National Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution expressing deep concerns over the heinous crimes being committed by religious extremists against the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, Radio Pakistan reported.

The resolution moved by Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain strongly condemned the genocide of Rohingya Muslims and called upon the United Nations to intervene to stop human rights violations there.

Appreciating the government of Pakistan for raising the issue with the UN Secretary General, the resolution called upon the government to impress upon the Myanmar government for the protection of human rights of the peaceful community of Rohingya Muslims. The resolution also

called upon the OIC to deliberate the issue and take necessary action in the matter.

The resolution commended the courage of Rohingya Muslims who are bravely facing the genocidal campaign against them.

As a key member of the OIC, Pakistan is going to write to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as well as the United Nations Security Council president to ask them for further intensification of diplomatic and moral pressure on Myanmar to grant citizenship rights to Rohingyas in accordance with international humanitarian laws.

This was one of the many recommendations of a threemember cabinet committee that Prime Minister Nawaz

Sharif approved on Tuesday.

The committee – headed by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and comprising the PM’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz and the PM’s Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi – was formed by the PM last week to deliberate on the issue of Rohingya Muslims.

The committee has also decided that a special grant of US$ 05 million should be announced as Pakistan’s contribution towards plight of Rohingyas. A year of ISIL: ‘There is no future for Iraq’

When fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) began threatening his life if he failed to pay a $500 monthly bribe, Abu Ahmed knew it was time to leave home. “I refused, and they said, ‘We will kill you,’” Abu Ahmed, who spoke under a pseudonym out of fear for his family’s safety, told Al Jazeera. Abu Ahmed, 63, is among thousands of Sunni residents who fled the Hawija district of northern Iraq after ISIL overran it one year ago. His home was converted into an Islamic court, and he now lives in neighbouring Kirkuk city, sharing a modest home with more than a dozen family members. Perched on a thin mattress laid atop the concrete floor, Abu Ahmed described how ISIL cemented its grip on Hawija’s residents through fear. “If you don’t join them, they kill you directly,” he said. “To save your life, you will tell them, ‘I am with you.’” Residents in the Sunni stronghold of Hawija have long opposed the Shia-led Iraqi government, citing systemic discrimination and a litany of abuses against Sunnis by security forces. Two years ago, deadly clashes erupted in the district after Iraqi security forces raided a protest camp where Sunnis were demonstrating against former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. It was this antipathy towards the ruling regime that prompted many Hawija residents to initially welcome ISIL’s advance in June 2014, Abu Ahmed said. They expected a “revolution”, he recalled. “But then everything changed,” Abu Ahmed said, noting ISIL soon exhibited tactics similar to the Iraqi army - storming homes and assaulting residents to settle vendettas. “The army under Maliki used to treat us all like terrorists, and today there is no government. It is a militia.

It is no different from ISIL,” Abu Ahmed said. “There is no future for Iraq, no future at all.” Hasan Mahmoud Sofi, a Hawija-

based commander of the Sahwa (Awakening Council) that years ago helped the Iraqi government and US troops fight al-Qaeda in Iraq, echoed Abu Ahmed’s sentiments. Sofi, who also fled Hawija after ISIL’s takeover, said the district is now suffering from critical water and electricity shortages, as well as a lack of jobs. Sitting with fellow Sahwa members on the floor of his home in the heart of Kirkuk, Sofi said they want to fight to win Hawija back, but lack the necessary tools. “The government didn’t give us any weapons to defend ourselves… We repeatedly asked for weapons from the Iraqi government, but they never responded to our demands,” Sofi told Al Jazeera, noting the Hawija-based Sahwa are best positioned to drive ISIL out of that territory. “You need to know the area to win the war.” Kemal Kirkuki, the Peshmerga commander for western Kirkuk, warned against arming the Sahwa, suggesting the group could become “ISIL in another form”. The Peshmerga have been making gains in the battle against ISIL, controlling strategic oil and water reserves in the area, he told Al Jazeera. Yet even as ISIL fighters in Hawija have suffered setbacks in recent days, with dozens reportedly killed after anti-ISIL air strikes last week targeted a warehouse in the district, Kirkuki said the group has been pushing every day to try to expand its reach. At this point, he believes the sectarian divides in Iraq have become too entrenched for the country to find unity, noting any future will necessarily entail separate states for Kurds, Sunnis, and Shia Muslims: “We are not brothers,” Kirkuki said. Meanwhile, Colonel Idriss Rifaet of the Asaish of Kirkuk, a Kurdish security force, cited growing concerns about the influx of internally displaced persons [IDPs] into the Kirkuk area. “They are coming daily; we cannot stop them,” Rifaet told Al Jazeera. “The main problem for us is that even when ISIL is pushed out, the IDPs are staying here and not going back.”

Rifaet says security forces believe there are sleeper cells among the IDP population, although he could not estimate how many. As for the danger from neighbouring Hawija in particular, Rifaet notes that the trouble there began brewing long before the ISIL invasion. “They are ex-Saddam people,” he said, “and they think Kurds are their enemy, coming to control their lands.”

Libya’s internationally-recognised parliament, based in the port city of Tobruk, has suspended its participation in United Nations-brokered talks over a proposed powersharing scheme with a rival government, which controls the country’s capital Tripoli.

A spokesman for the internationally-recognised parliament’s negotiators, Essa AbdelKauoum, told the AP news agency that the council made its decision after UN envoy Bernardino Leon “succumbed” to its rival’s demands and presented a draft proposal that gives them more power. “Leon brought us to square one...to appease an ideological group in a horrible way,” he said. “He succumbed to extortion.” Abdel-Kauoum added that his delegation would not be attending another planned meeting in Berlin. Libya is split between a government backed by militias that seized the capital last August and the elected parliament, which is forced to convene in Libya’s far east. The UN draft stipulates the formation of a national unity government and would create a new legislative dominated by the Tripoli-based leadership and executive powers alongside the elected parliament.

Mohammed Sawan, the leader of the political arm of Libya’s Muslim Brotherhood, issued a statement “welcoming” the new draft.

“We think this has achieved a tangible posi-

tive improvement which should be taken seriously and built upon to reach an agreement that ends the political division and achieves stability,” said Sawan, who heads the Justice and Construction Party. Earlier on Tuesday, Leon said that Libya’s rival administrations responded positively to the draft peace agreement put forward at talks in Morocco. “All I can tell you for now is that the reaction is positive,” Leon told journalists. Libya has slid into chaos since the 2011 overthrow and killing of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi. A patchwork of former rebel brigades other militias control much of the oilrich North African country. Water experts urge B.C. to take a lesson from California drought

Parker Jefferson lives beside the Cowichan River on Vancouver Island. Every spring, he heads into the creeks and streams to rescue juvenile salmon. This spring, Jefferson said, has been “just shocking — week to week, it would be half the size it was the previous week, and then it’s completely dry.” “The first week in May was when we really started to notice — the tributaries to Cowichan Lake, it’s just like somebody turned the taps off.” They’ve seen dry years in the past, Jefferson said, but this one looks like it could be as bad as or worse than any he can remember. Rodger Hunter, Cowichan Watershed Board co-ordinator, said the water level in the lake is already “much, much lower” than it should be at this time of year. Unless summer brings “miracle” rains, Hunter said, the river could soon be “a trickle, compared to what it should be.” This week, the B.C. government issued a statement urging all municipal, agricultural and industrial users on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and Haida Gwaii to reduce

water use by 20 per cent or more, anticipating the possibility of “significant water supply shortages in 2015.” Hunter said: “The forecast isn’t good. This looks like a grim situation.” In a report published Wednesday, B.C. water law experts warn the province’s policy makers to learn from the cautionary lessons of California, now in the fourth year of a historic severe drought. The B.C. government is currently at work on the regulations for the Water Sustainability Act, which comes into effect Jan. 1, 2016. Those regulations will be crucial to ensuring the WSA can actually achieve water sustainability, and the provincial government should look seriously at what’s unfolded to the south, said report co-author Oliver Brandes, POLIS Project director. Closer to B.C., the governor of Washington declared a statewidedrought emergency last month, and the state projected a $1.2-billion crop loss this year due to drought.

B.C. is unlikely to soon experience a provincewide emergency quite like California’s drought,

which has already cost the state billions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs, according to estimates. But despite the differences between B.C. and California, the new report argues, vital lessons can be learned from the Golden State’s example. The report’s conclusion reads: “If B.C. doesn’t fundamentally address the issues being faced today, sometime in the not-so-distant future, B.C. could be in a multi-year drought like California.” Water scarcity is likely to hit parts of B.C. with increasing frequency, said report co-author Randy Christensen, a staff lawyer at Ecojustice. ”The feedback we get out of places like the Okanagan is they don’t feel they’re in that different of a situation to California,” Christensen said. Auditor general calls for ‘transformational change’ in Senate spending Auditor General Michael Ferguson is calling for “transformational change” in the Senate after a damning audit found that many senators allegedly broke the rules and submitted ineligible expense claims. Ferguson’s long-awaited report has found a lack of independent oversight and accountability in the way senators’ expenses are governed. The report makes a number of recommendations, including “transformational change” in the way senators’ expenses are claimed, controlled and reviewed.

The report also says that an independent body should have oversight of Senate expenses.

“Simply changing or adding to existing rules will not be enough,” the report says. “Improvements in oversight, accountability, transparency, and Senators’ consideration for the cost to taxpayers are needed to resolve the issues that we have identified.” At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Ferguson said the Senate’s Internal Economy Committee has exclusive authority when it comes to managing Senate resources and dealing with senators’ expenses.

But the committee is made up of individual senators who also file expenses, so there is a lack of independent oversight, Ferguson said.

The audit examined all expenses incurred by 116 sitting and former senators between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2013. It found many instances where senators did not consider the cost of their travels and other claims, which are paid by taxpayers. Information provided by senators to support their expenses was “often insufficient,” the audit found. “What really struck me was the extent to which it seemed to have been ingrained in senators – in many of them, not all of them – that they didn’t have to be accountable, they didn’t have to be transparent with the spending,” Ferguson later told CTV’s Power Play. The audit flagged 30 former and sitting senators who incurred expenses that were deemed “not in accordance” with Senate rules or did not fit the definition of “parliamentary business.” Nine senators’ expenses were referred to the RCMP on Friday. All of his generosity was for Allah, be he Mighty and Majestic, and seeking His pleasure. Either he would spend for the poor, or the needy, or in the way of Allah, or to win over to Islam those whose faith would be strengthened by his generosity.

His character was an embodiment of this book (the Qur’an) in that he was pleased with what it describes as pleasurable, angered by what it describes as evoking anger. He hastened to implement what it encourages and to avoid what it forbids. For this reason his generosity and goodness was increased during this month (Ramadan),

By: Imam Zaid Shakir We often focus on the fasting and Tarawih prayers during Ramadan. However, the blessed month is also a time when generosity is greatly emphasized. One should try to be exceedingly generous during this month.

In this section (pp. 305-310) Ibn Rajab examines the generosity of the Prophet . This examination is an encouragement for the believers to be excessively generous during the blessed month of Ramadan.

It is related in the two sound books (alBukhari and Muslim) on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father: The Messenger of Allah was the most generous of people. He was especially generous in Ramadan when the Angel Gabriel would come and review the Qur’an with him. Gabriel would to review the Qur’an with him every night during the month of Ramadan.

Verily, when Gabriel would come and review the Qur’an with him in Ramadan, the Messenger of Allah was more generous than the free-blowing wind.

Imam Ahmad records this hadith with the additional words at its end, “He was not asked for anything except that he gave it.”

Generosity is expansive and abundant giving. Allah is described as generous. [We read] in the compilation of Imam al-Tirmidhi, from the transmissions of Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, that the Prophet said, “Allah is generous, He loves generosity; He is noble, He loves nobility.” His compilation also mentions, on the authority of Abu Dharr, on the authority of the Prophet narrating directly from his Lord: O my servants! If the first of you, the last of you; the living of you, the dead of you; the intact of you, the decomposed of you; were to gather in a vast plain, and every individual were to ask of me his wildest dream, and I were to grant everyone what he asked, that would not decrease my dominion as much as [the water taken from] an ocean one of you were to pass by and dip a needle into it and then extract it. That is because I am generous, extant, and glorious. I do what I please. My giving is a word and my punishment is a word. My command to something when I desire it is but to say, “Be, and it is!”

In a well-known narration, Fudail bin ‘Iyyad mentioned, “Every night Allah proclaims, ‘I am generous, I love generosity; I am noble, I love nobility.’” Allah is the most generous of all. His generosity is amplified during certain special times such as the month of Ramadan. [It is in the context of discussing Ramadan] that he has revealed, When my servants ask about Me, verily I am close by.

I respond to the call of the supplicant when he invokes me. (Qur’an 2:186) In a hadith mentioned by Imam al-Tirmidhi and others, the Prophet mentioned, “During it (Ramadan) a caller cries out, ‘Those desiring good come forward, and those desiring evil stay away.’ Allah has those He liberates from Hell, and that occurs every night [during Ramadan].”

In that Allah has predisposed His Prophet upon the most perfect and noblest character traits, as is related in a hadith from Abu Hurayra, from the Prophet that he said, “I have only been sent to perfect the noblest of character.” Imam Malik mentions this in the Muwatta. The Prophet was indeed the most generous of all people.

The Prophet possessed these praiseworthy qualities even before Islam. Owing to this, Khadija said to him, when he initially received revelation, “I swear by Allah, He will never disgrace you! You uphold the sanctity of blood relations, you honor the guest, you bear the burdens of others, you spend on the deprived, and you assist people in the face of calamities.” After revelation these qualities were greatly amplified in him .

It is related in the compilations of al-Bukhari and Muslim, from Anas, “The Messenger of Allah was the nicest, bravest, and most generous of all people.” Anas also relates, “After Islam, the Messenger of Allah was

On May 31, the Darul Quraan Academy of Canada conducted its annual Hifz-ul Quraan and graduation ceremony at the Royal King Palace Hall in Surrey.

Local guests as well as dignitaries from India were present to witness and bless the crowd on this auspicious occasion and addressed the audience.

The program began with the recitation of the Holy Quraan by a student from the Madrasah, Zubair Abid. Maulana Zafar Abid, president of Madrasah then welcomed everyone for their presence at the program. He spoke about the importance of the Madrasah and how important the support for the Madrasah is for the youth as well as for the entire Muslim Community.

Maulana Jahangir Basheer Awan spoke on this occasion about the virtues of the Quraan and the miracles of memorizing the Quraan.

Qari Abdul Wahab was invited to say a few words regarding the virtues Holy Qur’aan memorisation, he recited an ayah about the revelation of the Quraan and how Allah (SWT) will protect the Qur’aan until the day of judgment, then the chief guest appeared so he didn’t continue.

Faheem Ali Imraan, student of this madrasah hymed a beautiful Nazam about the virtues of Huffaz. It was recited twice on the demand from audience. Aziz Patel, student of Masjid Al Noor, also recited a Nazam.

Then the ceremony for the New Huffaz was conducted. First, three students from the Madrasah at Masjid Al Noor completed their Nazirah Al Quraan in front of the distinguished guests.

The graduation ceremony was then conducted for the following four new Huffaz from the Darul Quraan Academy: Hafiz Muhammad Talha Abid son of Maulana Zafar Abid, Hafiz Muhammad Anees Abbas son of Br. Qamar Abbas Hafiz Aasif Ali son of Br. Muntaz Ali Hafiz Ubada Raja son of Maulana Anayat-

ullah Raja (Alaihir Rahmah) Each of the Huffaz recited their final Sabaq (lesson) in front of the Ulama before receiving their Turbans through the Dastarbandi ceremony.

The guest of honour, Hazrat Maulana Mufti Ahmed Khanpuri (DB) then spoke about a dua that Ibrahim (AS) made, asking that the nation from his progeny be obedient to him.

He also spoke about the importance of the Holy Quraan in one’s life: stating that the first lesson should be to learn how to read the Quraan and eventually put effort to memorize the Quraan.

He also stated that Allah (SWT) only chooses selected individuals to memorize the Quraan; only those who will protect the Quraan in their hearts.

He also praised that the Huffaz of the Darul Quraan Academy were reading in a way as if arabic was their mother tongue; praising that they were reading with very good Tajweed and pronunciation.

He also reminded everyone present that the four Huffaz at the ceremony and all those around the world have the great blessing of being able to take 10 people on whom Jahannam was Waajib into Jannah. Masha’allah!!!

He also appealed that everyone should make intention to have at least one person in their family as a Hafiz. As well he emphasized on helping madrasah in the community. After his speech he suplicated for whole nation of Islam in general and for those who were present at the function and for the Huffaz. May Allah ( SWT) accept his dua in favour of all of us. Aameen After the speech, Asr salaah was performed then Maulana Abdul Lateef Naumani sahab started the fundraising portion of the program. The donors generously contributed approximately $55,000 in donations and pledges.

There were previous reports of higher amount of pledges and donations being collected at the program. Due to a clerical error

in the summation of the pledges and donations at the time of collection, the actual total was found to be $55,000 after further review.

Maulana Zafar Abid thanked the generosity of

the donors and for all the support that everyone has given for the advancement of the Madrasah and for the 50 Huffaz that have finished while he’s been running the Madrasah.

Kewlona Islamic Centre Fundraising dinner held @ G u l b e r g

By: Hamid ButtWWW Kelowna has a small Muslim Community consist of approximately 150 families and approximately same number of International Muslim students from around the world; mostly studying in UBC Kelowna. Kelowna currently has a very small Masjid approximately 1000 sq ft inclusive that can accommodate 100-110 people. This was an old single story old church with no basement that was purchased 13-14 years ago. This Masjid can no longer accommodate their needs and often people would have to pray outside during the Jumma times.

Kelowna Masjid has initiated an expansion project and recently purchased a house for $450K that has a reasonable backyard, this property is adjacent to the Masjid at the back.

This house also provides 2nd access to another road that will allow better traffic management during the busy times Insha’Allah.

Alhamdulillah existing property and this new house is fully paid.

The purchased house is rented and generating a regular monthly income while Masjid had submitted a rezoning application so they can expand the yard of that house as Masjid parking lot. The plan is to demolish existing Masjid and build entirely new building with approximately 3000 sq ft of full usable basement and 3000 sq ft at the main level increasing the capacity by almost six times Insha’Allah.

Owner of the Gulberg Restaurant of Surrey and the Owner of Chevron/WhiteSpot Restaurant together sponsored a fundraising dinner at the Surrey Gulburg Restaurant to generate some funds for the Kelowna Masjid expansion project on Jun 6, 2015. Alhamdulillah over 100 people attended this dinner and showed their support to this noble cause.

Sk. Yusuf Badat, a well know Scholar was the speaker at the event. He emphasized the importance of Masajid as the main center for the Muslim communities for all their internal affairs, an education center and a center that builds the bridges with community at large.

Senate approves anti-terror Bill C-51

The Senate has rubber¬stamped new antiterror legislation that will beef up Canada’s policing and spying powers, despite an outcry from those worried the bill will infringe on individual privacy. Bill C¬51 will amend the Criminal Code to make it easier for CSIS officers, border guards, and other law enforcement officials to monitor and arrest potential terror threats in Canada, including individuals seeking to leave the country to commit terror acts abroad. Speaking to reporters Wednesday, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair expressed disappointment about the bill’s passage in the Red Chamber. “I will share with you my shock that the Senate … proceeded to support Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau in voting for Bill C¬51, which constitutes an unprecedented attack on the rights and freedoms of all Canadians,” said Mulcair following his party’s weekly caucus meeting. Critics of the bill warn that it will make it easier for security officials to place Canadians under surveillance, as well as monitor their actions online. Protesters held several rallies in recent months to call for the bill to be rejected. The bill passed with 44 votes in favour and 28

against. Bill C¬51 is now awaiting royal assent from the governor general, the last step before it becomes law.

What is Bill C-51?

According to the Government of Canada, Bill C-51, also known as the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015, was designed to, “encourage and facilitate information sharing between Government of Canada institutions in order to protect Canada against activities that undermine the security of Canada.”The Conservative Party introduced the idea of increasing security provisions after the Parliament Hill shooting in October, but didn’t formally introduce the act until January.

Simply put, the Stephen Harper government wants to allocate more power to police services and security institutions like the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) to keep a closer eye on potentially dangerous terrorism situations and prevent future attacks.

Why does the Harper government insist we need it?

According to the act’s official summary, Bill C-51 would ensure safer transportation services for Canadians, allow law enforce-

ment to step in and arrest, without question, a person they suspect is about to carry out a terrorist attack, and it would increase the protection of witnesses who come forward with information on a potential terrorist attack.

Essentially, the government would increase its role in national security to keep a constant watchful eye on potentially harmful situations and end them before anyone is hurt or killed.

Why is it so controversial?

Civil liberty groups and other critics have claimed the bill stretches the definition of security to potentially include peaceful protests, further restricts freedom of expression, and raises privacy concerns, since the act would allow federal institutions such as Health Canada and Revenue Canada to share private information with the RCMP. Critics have also expressed grave concerns that it fails to define terrorism clearly, and in attempting to remove all terrorist propaganda from the Internet will effectively try to censor freedom of expression on the Internet, violating a handful of online civil liberties.

Bill C-51 was formally introduced on Jan. 30, and since then has been rapidly pushed through Parliament. On Feb. 23, the bill was passed and read a second time before being referred to the Standing Committee.

Critics have argued that the Harper government is pushing the bill through the Senate as fast as it can so it can make it law without leaving much room for debate. The government has denied these allegations, claiming that the faster the bill gets passed, the faster government and law enforcement services can start to take action on protecting the country from further terrorist attacks.

Remaining Citizenship Act reforms coming into force

A final suite of reforms to strengthen and modernize Canada’s citizenship laws will be fully in force as of June 11, 2015. The changes – part of a package of measures approved by Parliament last year – ensure new citizens can fully and quickly participate in Canada’s economy and Canadian society.

The first set of provisions that came into force last summer to strengthen Canadian citizenship and speed up application processing times are already paying off. New citizenship applications are being finalized in a year or less, and it is expected that the backlog of older files will have been eliminated by the end of this fiscal year. Individuals who submitted a citizenship application before April 1, 2015 will have a decision by March 31, 2016.

Among the many benefits of the government’s citizenship reforms, the new provisions will deter citizens of convenience

– those who become citizens for the sake of having a Canadian passport to return to Canada to access taxpayer-funded benefits that come with citizenship status, without having any attachment to Canada, or contributing to the economy.

Key changes include (in force June 11, 2015): •Adult applicants must now be physically present in Canada for at least 1,460 days (four years) during the six years before the date of their application, and they must be physically present in Canada for at least 183 days in each of four calendar years within the qualifying period. This is aimed at ensuring that citizenship applicants develop a strong attachment to Canada.

•Applicants between the ages of 14 and 64 must meet basic knowledge and language requirements. This is aimed at ensuring that more new citizens are better prepared for

Ottawa, Ontario, June 10, 2015... The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is noting an increase in telephone scams where the caller claims to be from the CRA but is not, and is asking Canadians to beware—these calls are fraudulent and could result in identity and financial theft.

Some recent telephone scams involve threatening taxpayers or using aggressive and forceful language to scare them into paying fictitious debt to the CRA. Victims receive a phone call from a person claiming to work for the CRA and saying that taxes are owed. The caller requests immediate payment by credit card or convinces the victims to purchase a prepaid credit card and to call back immediately with the information. The taxpayer is often threatened with court charges, jail or deportation.

If you get such a call, hang up and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

These types of communication are not from the CRA. When the CRA calls you, it has established procedures in place to make sure your personal information is protected. If you want to confirm the authenticity of a CRA telephone number, call the CRA by using the numbers on its Telephone numbers page. The number for business-related calls is 1-800959-5525. The number for calls about individual concerns is 1-800-959-8281.

To help you identify possible scams, use the following guidelines: The CRA: •never requests prepaid credit cards; •never asks for information about your passport, health card, or driver’s licence; •never shares your taxpayer information with another person, unless you have provided the appropriate authorization; and •never leaves personal information on your

life in Canada.

•Citizenship will be automatically extended to additional “Lost Canadians” on June 11th, who were born before 1947, and did not become citizens on January 1, 1947 when the first Canadian Citizenship Act came into effect. This will also apply to their children born in the first generation outside Canada.

•Adult applicants must declare their intent to reside in Canada once they become citizens and meet their personal income tax obligations in order to be eligible for citizenship.

•To help improve program integrity, there are now stronger penalties for fraud and misrepresentation (to a maximum fine of $100,000 and/or up to five years in prison).

This is aimed at deterring unscrupulous applicants who are prepared to misrepresent themselves, or advise others to do so.

•The newly-designated Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council

(ICCRC) is the new regulatory body for citizenship consultants. Only members of the ICCRC, lawyers or notaries (including paralegals and students at law) can be paid to provide citizenship applicants with representation or advice.

•New application forms, aligned with the new rules for eligibility, will be available on the CIC website as of June 11, 2015. Any applications received using the old forms and applications received after June 10, 2015 will be returned to the applicant

7 Tips to Get Your Kitchen Ready for Ramadan

By:JuliaZulhijah Being the month where the rewards of any act of worship and charity are multiplied, Ramadan is a time Muslims look forward to, as we strive to perform more ibadah and good deeds. Unfortunately, it is also when we can easily get distracted, as we tend to devote too much of our time to food, preparing meals for suhoor and iftar.

I know, I know, we’re hungry, we’re tired, aren’t we allowed to at least enjoy a well-prepared, home-cooked meal after a day’s fast?

Of course!

However, do keep in mind that Ramadan is not a food festival. It is so much more than that, and like everything else, it does not last.

So we need to prioritise because before we know it, the month of Ramadan with all its blessings will be gone, giving way to the other months. This is why just as you may have an ibadah plan for Ramadan, having a planned and organised kitchen is also important, as it will help us become more effective in managing our time when the holy month arrives.

This, in turn, will hopefully give us more opportunity to focus on other activities like performing taraweeh, reciting the Qur’an and performing dhikr.

So, without further ado, below are some of my tips to help you become more organised in the kitchen during the month of Ramadan: 1. Have a pre-Ramadan clean-up session Since we do not want to be spending a lot of time and energy doing any major cleaning up in our kitchen during Ramadan, it makes perfect sense to do this beforehand. Depending on the size and state of your kitchen, you can do this as early as three weeks ahead, although I personally feel that two weeks should be enough time. What we want to tackle for this session is basically what I like to call the “major stuff”.

• Getting rid of any unwanted materials or ingredients to make space for the items that you will need for Ramadan.

• Wiping (inside and outside) your oven, microwave, cabinets, fridge, freezer, windows, kitchen counter, stove top and floor.

• Designating a home for all your ingredients and kitchen utensils or tools.

Once this task is completed, come Ramadan, your kitchen will be in great condition and all you have to worry about then is maintaining it that way for the rest of the month.

Remember, consistency is everything! Habits like regularly tackling your dirty dishes before they build up, immediately putting things where they belong and instantly wiping spills, dirt or grime will ensure that your kitchen stays clean and neat all the time with minimal effort.

2. Start planning your Ramadan menu Now that we have got the cleaning covered, it is time to move on to meal planning. I believe that doing this in advance will help make our

transition into Ramadan easier. You can start planning the menu two weeks ahead: sit down and spend about an hour or two to list down all the dishes that you plan to serve throughout the entire month and prepare a shopping list for the ingredients that you need. In planning the menu, take into account family favourites and any dietary restrictions so you don’t end up preparing dishes that nobody will eat.

Preparing your meals ahead I recommend that you consider including meals that can be made ahead of time in your menu. They are essentially dishes that you prepare in advance, and then freeze and reheat when you want to serve them. Examples of such meals include stews, soups, sauces, porridge, curry dishes, and many more. These meals can be made to last for months (most food items will keep up to 3 months if stored properly), which will save you so much precious time during Ramadan.

Allocate a day when you can do all your cooking (perhaps a week or two, or a few days prior to Ramadan) or take a few hours every couple of days and slowly build up your meals. Double or (if you’re up for it!) triple the amount that you usually make and store it in food containers in usable portions so you don’t end up wasting food. By preparing as many meals as you can before entering Ramadan, you will be able to have more free time later on.

Storing fast and easy foods It also helps to fill up your kitchen with healthy snacks and easy-to-prepare foods, should you find yourself in situations when you’re required to do some quick, last-minute cooking. Trust me, no matter how much we have planned, there will be days like these!

Foods like rice, bread, eggs, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, fruits, canned fish, barley, cereals, frozen vegetables and baked beans are among my kitchen staples. They’re versatile, easy to make and I always make sure I have them around in case I’m in the mood for some instant nourishment without having to put in too much effort to prepare them.

3. Stock up on kitchen helpers Items like cling wrap, foil, paper towel, plastic bags and food containers (preferably glass if you plan to reheat them in the microwave) come in many brands and sizes, some of which are very, very cheap. They are useful to have in the kitchen, especially when it comes to meal preparation and storing leftovers or make-ahead meals. Now, I’m aware that some of the things I have listed above may not be that eco-friendly, so my advice is to only use these products when necessary, try to reuse them (if possible) and recycle those that can be recycled.

4. Go shopping Now that you have your list, it’s time to hit the supermarket! Knowing when to buy what is also important. Ideally, we would all want to cross off every single item on our list in

one shopping trip. Unfortunately, this is not always practical. If you are going to cook right away, then there’s no problem with this.

But if you plan on doing it on some later date, then it is best to stock up on all the kitchen gears and non-perishable foods you will need for Ramadan first (examples: dry foods like grains, canned goods) and leave out the easily perishable ones (examples: fresh herbs and green, leafy vegetables) for later, as they don’t last long. Purchase them a day or two before you plan to use them to ensure they are still in good shape when cooked. So, even though you don’t get to buy everything in one go, at least you get to shop lightly on your subsequent shopping trips since you only have to focus on getting the remaining items.

Online Shopping While we’re still on the subject of shopping, another great way to do this is by buying things online. These days, a lot of major supermarkets around the world offer this facility with either zero or minimal delivery charge.

Check with your nearest supermarket if they provide delivery service to your area. Online shopping is not only convenient, but it is also a real time-saver. It is definitely something I would recommend, especially for those who are always busy and those who are too weak or tired to go to the supermarket while fasting.

It also minimises impulse buying: since you are not walking through the aisles (on empty stomachs during Ramadan!), it prevents you from buying items that most likely will be unnecessary, unhealthy and expensive.

5. Get familiar with kitchen shortcuts These are tricks that can make your life as a home cook less stressful, as they help cut your work short. If your goal for this Ramadan is to have an easier time in the kitchen, then you should learn as many shortcuts as possible.

For instance, using a food processor to chop onions (especially when you need to use a lot of them) and soaking cut fruits in saltwater to prevent them from turning brown are just a few examples of the many tips available out there. You can get them from the internet, cookbooks, and from your mother! I personally feel that the best tips I got were from my grandmother. A lot of them sounded strange when I first heard them, but they always work perfectly!

6. Keep things uncomplicated when hosting iftar parties

For many Muslims, iftar parties are a must during Ramadan. Unfortunately, a lot of people tend to go overboard in planning them resulting in overly stressed out and tired hosts and banquets of meals that make you too tired for ibadah afterwards. To avoid this, the key is to keep things simple. Plan ahead and be realistic about what you can and cannot do.

If you cannot cook for more than 20 people, keep the number of guests below that or if this is not possible, then consider other options like recruiting extra help, serving store-bought foods or better yet, turning it into a “bring-adish” party, where everyone pitches in and brings along one dish. Not only is this fun as your guests get to showcase their cooking talent, but it will also lessen your workload.

The spirit of Ramadan will also come alive as everyone will take part in feeding other fasting people.

Plus, it is also easier to use disposable plates, cups and utensils (opt for eco-friendly ones, if possible) for these events, especially if you are inviting a large number of guests. I know they don’t exactly represent chic dining, but at least you won’t be stuck washing dirty dishes for hours later on!

7. If things don’t go as planned…relax!

This is firstly a reminder for me, as it is for everyone else. I personally find it difficult to accept when things don’t go according to my plan and I struggle greatly with this as it is just not in my nature to go with the flow. But in my distress, I always remind myself that no matter how perfect I think my plans are, Allah is still The Best Planner. I take comfort in this and it helps me to deal with any unexpected hurdle that might come in my way of being more organised.

So, be it an accident involving the dessert that you have lovingly and painstakingly prepared for iftar, or the unexpected guests arriving at your doorstep five minutes before Maghrib, it helps to remember this and to just try and handle these situations the best you can, without losing too much of your cool. It’s Ramadan after all, a month of mercy and forgiveness.

Let us not lose sight of that.

Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor Sometimes you’re an observer of other people’s lives and you may think you’ll never experience what they’re living through, whether it is a positive or negative situation. You may think, “That will never happen to me.”

Part of real beauty of life is that it’s unpredictable. Nothing is permanent, everything changes, and of course, a lot of things can happen that will transform who you are and have an impact on your life. We need to cultivate the ability to truly accept whatever comes and embrace it. We need to develop the habit of looking at whatever happens through a positive mindset, instead of a negative and defeatist one.

Of course, life will bring many challenges and it’s not easy to embrace them when we’re suffering and wishing those things would have never happened. But if we start cultivating acceptance in our lives right now, we’ll likely to cope with future crisis in a different way and view them from a different perspective. We will accept instead or resisting.

The reality is we might want things to be different in the future, but in the present moment we need to accept things as they are. That’s way you can make your life flow smoothly instead of roughly. As you go along, you will discover that you will be happier and more peaceful when you accept what had happened, instead of constantly fighting to change things.

There are two ways out of a problem, accept what’s happening, see the positive, and choose a peaceful state of mind or fight against it. Be miserable and struggle against the universe. Learning to accept things as they present themselves is a helpful tool in different aspects of life.

Whether it’s any loss, a missed opportunity, or a sudden change in your plans, being able to accept things as they come (when they are out of our control) will help you maintain inner peace and happiness.

Acceptance is the key to convert momentary happiness to enduring happiness. It helps you move from feeling happy to

actually being happy.

Practicing acceptance prepares you to live in this changing world, where you never know what’s going to happen next. Acceptance is like protecting yourself with your own shield. It’s helpful to learn how to identify when it’s time to persist and when it’s time to accept. One thing that makes acceptance much easier is to list all the possible explanations for why you’re experiencing something. Finding the purpose behind every challenge will help you embrace it, instead of fighting it.

Choose not to judge what happens to you.

Instead, believe that everything happens for a reason and that better things will always follow. That’s the beginning of true acceptance. The important thing is not to understand why something happened. Our understanding can wait, but our obedience cannot. When something unpredictable happens, instead of complaining and over-thinking it, we need to choose to live with it.

It’s hard to practice acceptance when you deeply wish things aren’t the way they are. But the truth is, sometimes we can’t change our reality, even though we try. Instead of staring at the closed door in front of us or getting tired and bruised while we try to break it down, let’s turn around and see how many other windows we could open.

Acceptance is a choice - a hard one most definitely but in the end, it’s a choice that only we can make at any given situation of our lives. shabnam@skcounselling.ca

We are everywhere and nowhere at the time.the result is we miss actually what it is that the person is trying to convey trying to say.

The parents have their own busyness , children have their own but we have to set our priorities right, What is needed to be done needs to be done. Many times family or friends are actually looking for assurance that we are aware of their feelings , we are listening to them,paying attention to them caring for them.

When we listen and offer genuine support in any form we can it really helps the one in problem. This act of kindness saves lots of misunderstandings, heartache and angery response .The councellors And psychologist do this thing first ac-

tually listen to us.

The parents and children ,they are two different exisistance from different timeset era yet core is one It is natural for conflict ,difference of opinion minor or major to arise.

Times change and with it comes changes in values, thinking, mindset and whole outlook. Some parents accept this change of lifestyle with flexibility and some reluctantly and some people cannot cope with it. They become more adamant.There are people whose fathers or forefathers were residents in this country and some were not. Everyone has different cultural upbringings. Their perceptions are different.

Many times it’s no ones fault. Parents try hard to keep old values, way of dressing, society norms and how long they can shield outside “influence”. Specially with dressing and friend circles…

Father’s Day: Islamic View In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Brother, thank you for your good question and interest to know more about Islam and its teachings.

Generally speaking, a Muslim is required to show kindness, love, and dutifulness to his parents. Father’s Day is a social and family event that aims at celebrating fatherhood and honoring fathers. Such social and cultural events are not rejected in Islam as long as they don’t promote un-Islamic values.

Dr. Wael Shihab, PhD in Islamic Studies, Al-Azhar University, and the Head of the Shari`ah Dept. of Onislam.net website, stated, Dutifulness to parents, both mothers and fathers, is an Islamic value and obedience to Allah. One, therefore, should show kindness towards his parents because Allah Almighty says: “Your Lord has decreed, that you worship none save Him, and (that you show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, say not ‘Fie’ unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word.” (Al-Isra’ 17: 23) Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was once asked about the best deeds: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) says, ‘Having faith in Allah and His Messenger, then honoring one’s parents.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) In fact, the core meaning of the prohibited bid`ah in Islam is to introduce or invent a devotional or ritual act of worship into religion with no backing fromShari`ah. It is not acceptable, therefore, for anybody to invent a new form ofsalah (prayer) or fasting. `Ibaddat (acts of worship and religious rituals) should be founded on correct Shari`ah proofs.

World Days and events— such as the World Hijab Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Orphans’ Day—are mostly based on cultural and social considerations. They are not meant to introduce new religious rituals or devotional acts of worship.

Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, though it is also celebrated widely on other days by many other countries. Father’s Day was created to complement Mother’s Day, a celebration that honors mothers and motherhood.

Given the above, Father’s Day is a social event that aims at supporting universal values and morals. It’s not Islamically objectionable in itself as long as honoring fathers—or parents—is not confined to that Day. It’s not a sinfulbid`ah as it’s not meant to introduce a new ritual or `ibadah into religion. It’s a cultural, social, and family Day that aims at maintaining social and family ties.

May Allah help you and accept your and our good deeds!

A Little Father’s Day History Sonora Louise Smart Dodd first brought up the idea of a father’s day in 1909. She wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. When Sonora’s mother died in childbirth with her sixth child, William was left to raise the newborn and five other children by himself on a farm in Washington state.

As an adult, Sonora realized how strong and unselfish her dad had been raising his kids as a single parent.

Sonora wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday in June, because it was close to her dad’s birthday. How you can be both fit and fat?

By LISA KAAKI This explosive title ‘The Obesity Paradox: When Thinner Means Sicker and Heavier Means Healthier’ keeps all its promises from the very first pages. Right from the introduction, we are told things we have wanted to hear for a long time.

Whether we are slim or overweight, we have all at one point wondered why fat no longer means what it used to. In the past, fat has often been associated with the idea of affluence and wealth meaning that overweight people had a good life and didn’t suffer from hunger.

Women were also loved for their curvaceous body whereas nowadays fat is considered ugly and unhealthy.

We live now in a world where we are conditioned to lose weight, eat low-fat food and fit in tight clothes. The rate of obesity is going up and at the same time obesity has never been so vilipended by society.

“I’m here to tell you that fatness has been sorely misunderstood and wrongly portrayed in many respects,” writes Lavie.

So, after all fat is not the enemy we are led to believe. This surprising news has been circulating in medical journals in recent years. Yes, indeed, body fat can protect us in more ways that we can think of.

But first, let us find out the cause of obesity. Since the World War II, there has been a plethora of easy-to-get food and at the same time, the jobs we have do not require much physical activity. The number of calories we burn outpace our increasing food intake therefore the real

cause of obesity is due to physical inactivity rather than excess caloric consumption. However, what is interesting is that obesity is only seen in humans.

Wild animals are never obese. A wild animal which is too fat to run will be easily killed by predators.

More than ten years ago, doctors were noticing that overweight patients suffering from a cardiovascular disease generally have a better chance of surviving an illness potentially fatal in the short term. In other words moderately obese patients suffering from heart disease, arthritis, or cancer often live a longer and better life than normal-weight patients with the same ailments.

One can safely say that if too much or too little fat is destructive to one’s health, the same can be said for too much or too little exercise. So what does it mean to be healthy?

“Regardless of your weight and Body Mass Index, if you’re metabolically sound, you don’t have serious metabolic conditions like uncontrolled type 2 diabetes or lipid disorders such as dangerously high cholesterol or significantly elevated blood pressure, and you are cardiovascularly fit, you are healthy,” explains Lavie.

The problem is that losing weight through exercise is tough. It can take 35 kilometers of brisk walking to shed off a pound of fat, whereas a diet program will have a faster impact. But who can keep up a 1000 calorie-a-day diet for a long run? You are following a restrictive diet which is depriving you of energy and making you feel bad. This not only explains why most diets are unsuccessful but it also emphasizes the importance of exercise.

In fact, researches in top institutions at departments of neurology have noticed that exercise positively impacts the way we metabolize fat, we use calories and we control our metabolism. Physical ex-

ercise is one of the most powerful ways to change our genes because it increases the production of a protein, called the growth hormone which triggers the birth of new cells in the brain’s memory center.

So if you have to chose between being fit or fat, go for fit even if it means being heavier. You can gain weight as you age and still be healthy as long as you remain fit. Many heavier people with more body fat who remain as active as possible through out the day can be fitter and healthier than thin people who sit all day and do not exercise.

Fat is one of the basic components that make up the structure of our body. Other elements are muscles, water, bone, and our organs. Fat is essential for our survival. We need fat for warmth, insulation, protection, energy and even to think.

During the course of our world history, arts and literature have reflected the desirability of being plump. By the 20th Century excess fat was losing its aesthetic appeal and fewer people were staying fit due to new technologies and more sedentary jobs. Nowadays, we die twice as much from chronic illnesses like heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

“Health isn’t all about your physical body; it’s also about your mind and psyche, which are also markedly improved by physical activity and exercise. If we can loosen the reins on our obsession with weight and change the context of the conversation around our obesity crises to our physical inactivity, I think we can all move a little more and rest a little easier… and maybe live a lot longer and healthier,” concludes Lavie.

Sweet And Sour White Chicken

Elegant Cooking By Beenish B.B. Miracle’s new Writer Islamabad, Pakistan

Ingredients:

Boneless chicken 1 cup Cornflour 1/4 cup 1 Egg white (without yolk) Brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon Salt 1/4 teaspoon Baking Flour 1 Tablespoon cooking oil 1 cup (for frying) Place the pot or pan on slow heat.

Mix every thing in boneless chicken and marinate it for 2 hours.

Make chicken fritters and fry them.

For Gravy: 1 medium carrot Half boiled cabbage 1/4 cup Fresh chicken stock 1 cup Sugar 1 teaspoon Salt 1/2 teaspoon White pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon Brown vinegar 1/4 cup 1Tablespoon Cornflour Garlic paste 1 Tablespoon 2 Tablespoon Oil Heat a large frying pan and add the oil and garlic paste.

Waqar hopeful of Champions Trophy qualification

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has said that despite his side being ranked No. 9 in ODIs and facing a challenge to qualify for the 2017 Champions Trophy, which will be contested by only the top eight sides, he will continue to try new players for the development of the team. Waqar also said Pakistan will have to “live without Saeed Ajmal” and make up for the offspinner’s absence through teamwork, as they left Lahore for a 52-day tour of Sri Lanka just after midnight on Tuesday. Pakistan need to beat Sri Lanka in the five-ODI series to get to eighth and remain in contention for the Champions Trophy. It is their only opportunity ahead of the September 30 cut-off date, when the participants will be finalised based on the ICC’s rankings. After exiting in the quarterfinals of the 2015 World Cup, Pakistan were beaten 0-3 in Bangladesh and then beat Zimbabwe 2-0 at home. “I am not

saying we have a weak ODI team, but we are not as strong as we are in Tests,” Waqar said.

“Our disciplines in Tests are stronger because we have inexperienced players in the one-day format. Of course when you are trying new players it takes time. This series is very important for us to qualify for the Champions Trophy but we won’t hesitate in trying new boys because we have to keep our plan going to develop the team. “I am confident that we will qualify for the Champions Trophy.

We obviously have to win the series and it’s important for us to win at least 3-2, but we will push to win more than three matches.”
