44 killed in attack on bus carrying Ismailis in Karachi

KARACHI: At least 44 people were killed and 13 others wounded on Wednesday when armed men opened fire inside a bus carrying members of the Ismaili community near Safoora Chowk in Karachi.

Sindh Police Inspector General Ghulam Haider Jamali said that 60 people were on board the bus when six gunmen entered and executed 43 passengers.

He added that the armed men used 9mm pistols in the massacre. The attackers managed to flee after the attack.

Hospital sources have so far confirmed that the dead include 25 men and 16 women. Police officials said that there were no children among the casualties.

All victims were shot from a close-range.

Rana M Razzaq, a security coordinator at the Memon Medical Center, told Dawn that, “One young girl hid and survived. Three or four others who were brought to the hospital

have survived...the rest are all dead.”

Jundullah claims attack Ahmed Marwat, a spokesman for Jundullah which is a splinter group of the Tehreek-iTaliban Pakistan (TTP), talking to Reuters claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Al Qaeda affiliated group that started off from South Waziristan has targetted Shia minorities and foreign tourists in the past as well. In November last year, the group had pledged support to Islamic State (IS).

Oops! Alberta Shifts to the Left

Alberta NDP premier-designate Rachel Notley and her orange wave actually decimated the province’s 44-year-old Progressive Conservative dynasty which forced its leader Jim Prentice to resign from politics.

The province of Alberta enjoyed capitalistic economy for almost eight decades non-stop with ups and downs, indeed.

The outgoing premier Prentice was busy raising taxes and the other costs for Albertans with no acceptable justification.

With her good sense of public feelings, Ms. Rachel Notley did her campaigning excellently. Moreover, hundreds of thousands of people from across the country and from around the world settled there in Alberta who facilitated the recent switching from the Right to the Leftist party founded on socialistic ideology. This is a case of shifting away from capitalism.

Many of the new settlers were fed up because of poor delivery by the dysfunctional PC government. Obviously, the frustrated Albertans needed a regime change, so they did.

With the NDP in power, the socioeconomic and the political landscape of this province are in the re-positioning mode. The business community can’t be as happy as is general public; reason is simple - social benefits and reduced taxes. But there are consequences in the form of capital flight and decreased investment resulting in low or no revenue.

Economics based on promises and Taxation: The NDP has promised to raise the corporate tax rate to 12 per cent, increase taxes on the highestincome earners and review the province’s oil and gas royalties program, among many other elements in its

platform.

Other perception: The outgoing PC Leader claims his party has a completely different vision from the NDP; he is highly uncomfortable with the “NDP Plan,” as that could be ruining the economy. He is entitled to his opinion.

The fact: NDP always supports big, unionized business.

Furthermore, there has been a long history of failed pipeline diplomacy, but NDP majority means it’s back to the pipeline drawing board. Ms. Notley favours domestic refining and more stringent environmental controls in the oil sands. She is also supportive of some export schemes over others. She has pledged to tone down Alberta’s lobbying efforts for longstalled pipeline proposals.

Nevertheless, the shocked investors showed less enthusiasm, dumping their oil and gas stocks.

Good thing is Ms Notley is socially progressive but fiscally responsible leader similar to the former Manitoba premier Gary Doer who led his province to a decade of balanced budgets.

“For the business community, Rachel Notley’s influences first and foremost will be other prairie NDP governments, in terms of reaching out to the business community and creating a prosperous environment,” says Brad Lavigne, a former campaign director for the federal NDP who now works for Hill+Knowlton.

“Already on her first day following the election, she had one message and that was to the business community, and it was that she seeks a collaborative relationship. That’s consistent with what she said throughout the campaign.”

“To the extent an approach on pipe-

lines could be augmented by a climate change policy that works for both industry and governmental interests, it may well cast Alberta in a more favourable light with respect to potential pipeline development, even up to and including Keystone XL.” The NDP’s other campaign promises including plans to implement a twelve percent increase in corporate taxes, plans to boost the minimum wage to $15 per hour, a proposal to launch a review of energy royalty rates, and plans to increase homegrown refining of bitumen are likely to remain highly contentious, provided, the oil prices stay low.

Environmentalists aren’t likely to change their tune on pipeline projects, even with a charismatic, socially progressive NDP premier leading Alberta. The opposition to pipelines here includes greenhouse gas emissions from the oil-sands, opposition to oil companies, native fears of spills into salmon streams.

There is a need of thriving business climate, getting the highest prices for our resources, the best wages possible for our citizens, the best healthcare, the best education, of course!

The corporate sector exists to undertake business to make a profit. In doing so it generates wealth which makes taxes possible, hire employees, and pay their wages.

The voting Albertans did not realize that they went too far to the left this time risking the smoothness of the corporate world which is essential to economic vitality.

And, they can do some damage control by voting for the Federal Liberals in October. The liberals are known for staying in the middle lane accommodating social programs as well as

looking after the corporate vital signs.

Fact is the trade unions don’t support the Liberals and have a mindset to always campaign against the PCs. Let’s get back to Alberta provincial election which had nothing to do with Harper or Mulcair or Trudeau.

No doubt, the Albertan People were fed up with the PC government and opted for change, and the Notley NDPs were there to take advantage of the available opportunity.

Since the NDP is more for social programs, it ends up being highly costly with insufficient or no funds. The rise in cases of bankruptcies and liquidations is normal.

Good luck Alberta!

For Notley, this convincing majority is a gift, she carried a message of hope, renewal and positive change, and Albertans responded for the change of status quo.

Questions: What if the corporations pull back from this province, would this help job creation? No way!

In Nutshell: The New Democrats have promised significant investments in health care and education, to establish city charters. hike corporate taxes and provincial income-tax rates for high earners, freeze post-secondary tuition fees, expand public home care, and introduce school lunch programs for kids in low-income households.

If the NDP fulfils its promise of balanced budget by 2018, that will be great.

Surely, Nutley’s popularity will depend heavily on restoring Alberta’s struggling economy back to health.

Some key questions for Thind include: 1. Will he speak out against the new Conservative budget, which provided no help to Surrey families who want stable long-term funding for anti-gang programs?

James and New Democrat MLAs Adrian Dix and Jane Shin met with franchisees at the B.C. legislature on Wednesday before introducing the Franchise Act in the house.

The regulatory void that currently exists means franchisees can have major obligations to the franchisor but few rights to fight back if they are being treated unfairly. Franchisees face most of the risk in the business partnership, but may not have the means for the kind of investigation needed to determine whether their investment is a good one.

“In other provinces franchisors operate successfully with Franchise Act legislation in place that ensures disclosure. Doing so in BC would not add to the burden for most good players in the industry,” said Dix, New Democrat MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway. “What this bill does is ensure that small business know what they are buying when they enter into a franchise agreement.”

There are an estimated 10,000 franchise outlets with $14 billion in sales and 180,000 employees.

“British Columbia has more than its fair share of franchises, yet no legislation that specifically protects them,” said Shin, the New Democrat MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed. “After speaking with franchisees in communities province wide, it was clear that it’s time to act on behalf of small business owners.”

Franchise legislation is in place in five provinces: Alberta, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, New Brunswick and Manitoba.

Mp Sandhu Continues To Call On The Government To Address Crime Issue By: Maria Fleming NDP MP Sandhu asked the Public Safety Minister to come to a ‘late show’ last night to answer questions regarding crime prevention in Surrey. The Minister did not show up, prompting the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister to cover for him.

In his speech, Sandhu called on the government to work together to address Surrey’s crime crisis. “People come to Canada because they want to give their children a better future in a country that is safe. It is simply unacceptable that there are communities in this country where parents are afraid to let their children play outside in case of a lone bullet.

I am urging the government to work with us to find solutions to fix this alarming problem,” demanded Sandhu.

The MP for Surrey North specifically stated he did not want to hear the Parliamentary Secretary read the same talking points again.

Instead, he demanded a concrete action plan to address Surrey’s crime problem: “my question is not what this government has done or what the liberals did 10 years ago, my question is: what is the government going to do now?

What is this government’s plan to deal with the escalating gang violence?”

MP Sandhu was not satisfied with the response as the Parliamentary Secretary did not provide any concrete answers or commitments to address the current crime crisis in Surrey. “I will continue to come back and pressure the government until they give me answers and are ready to work to together to find solutions to Surrey’s crime crisis,” said Sandhu.

Security huddle decides to extend Karachi operation to include militant abettors

KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a highlevel meeting on Karachi’s security situation at the Governor House on Wednesday after gunmen killed 43 people in an attack on a bus carrying Ismailis.

During the meeting it was decided that the ongoing operation against criminal elements in the city will be sped up, and will be extended to target not only criminal organisations but also their workers and abettors.

The meeting resolved to carry the operation forward with more vigour, intensity and to consolidate the gains that have been made.

The meeting was attended by high-level civil and military officials including army chief General Raheel Sharif, ISI Director General (DG) Rizwan Akhtar, Corps Commander Karachi Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar, Rangers DG Major General Bilal Akbar, Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, federal interior secretary, federal chief secretary, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad and MQM leader Farooq Sattar.

During the meeting, Nawaz Sharif said law-enforcement agencies should work in complete coordination with each other to ensure peace in Karachi. The premier said all institutions responsible for countering terrorism should gear up to meet challenges.

“Karachi is the commercial hub of Pakistan; any incident that happens here holds great importance,” said Nawaz while speaking at the meeting.

“The enemies are not happy with our economic growth. It’s on their agenda to stop development and progress in the country. Therefore, it becomes very important to identify and act against such forces,” he added.

Earlier today, General Raheel Sharif reached Karachi after cancelling his visit to Sri Lanka, following the attack on Ismaili community members in the city.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan has barred PTI Chairman Imran Khan from campaigning for his party’s candidates in by-elections in three constituencies of the national and provincial assemblies.

Through a notification, the ECP has modified its earlier notifications issued to bar public office-holders from influencing in any way the results of by-polls to be held on June 8 in NA-108 (Mandi Bahauddin) and PP-196 (Multan) in Punjab and PK-56 (Mansehra) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

the list of public office-holders barred from visiting the constituencies after announcement of the election schedule. Talking to Dawn, senior PTI leader Dr Arif Alvi said: “The decision is surprising and must be reviewed by the ECP.”There should be a ban on announcement of development schemes after publication of election schedule, but such a restriction for members of the assemblies was unheard of, he added.

Dr Alvi said that a one-to-one electoral battle was likely between the candidates of the ruling PML-N and PTI in the constituencies and the decision was strange.

Others who will be affected by the decision include JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Qaumi Watan Party chief Aftab Ahmad Sherpao.

Aga Khan shocked by attack on Ismailis

The spiritual leader of the Ismaili community His Highness Aga Khan expressed shock and sorrow over the attack on a bus carrying Ismailis near Safoora Chowk in Karachi which left 43 dead and 13 wounded.

“This attack represents a senseless act of violence against a peaceful community.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the families of those killed and wounded in the attack,” said a statement posted on the Aga Khan Development Network website.

The statement said that Ismailis are a peaceful global community that live in harmony with various other ethnic and religious groups across the world.

The statement added that other Ismaili

leaders in Pakistan are currently involved in an emergency operation to help the survivors of the attack.

Yemen truce starts after Political parties open to new shelling, Iran sends cargo ship federal leaders’ debate format

Saudi-led air strikes hit the rebel-held Yemeni capital Sanaa hours before a five-day humanitarian truce took effect on Tuesday, and Washington cautioned against “provocative actions” after Iran dispatched a cargo ship to Yemen. The ceasefire began at 11 p.m.

(2000 GMT), said Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri, spokesman for a Saudi-led coalition which has been striking the country’s Houthi rebels since March 26. It is intended to allow the shipment of food and medicine to the country, which aid groups warn faces a humanitarian catastrophe after more than seven weeks of war. The Houthis shelled Saudi border areas in Jizan province until the last moments before the ceasefire started, Asseri said on al-Arabiya television, adding that this gave him no confidence the rebel group intended to keep to the truce. And as the ceasefire neared, witnesses said the Saudi-led alliance bombed Houthi positions in the southern port of Aden, where local armed groups were still fighting the rebels. The United States said it was tracking Iranian warships accompany-

ing the vessel bound for Hodaida port, and urged Iran instead to use a U.N. distribution hub in Djibouti to provide help to people in the war-damaged Arabian Peninsula country. “We would discourage any provocative actions,” said U.S. State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke. Iran is an ally of the Houthi movement, Yemen’s most powerful political faction which the coalition accuses of toppling the country’s rightful government. Iranian warships will escort the vessel, a naval commander was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA. “The 34th fleet, which is currently in the Gulf of Aden, has special responsibility to protect the Iranian humanitarian aid ship,” Admiral Hossein Azad said, referring to a destroyer and support vessel in international waters off Yemen. Asseri said any Iranian vessels sailing to Yemen, whether accompanied by warships or not, needed the permission of the Yemeni government or the coalition to make the journey. Looking to prepare for the truce and jumpstart stalled political talks among Yemen’s civil war factions, the new U.N. envoy to the country arrived in Sanaa, saying fighting would not resolve a conflict that crosses ethnic and religious faultlines. “We are convinced there is no solution to Yemen’s problem except through a dialogue, which must be Yemeni,” the envoy, Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, was quoted as saying by the local Saba news agency. Seeking to restore exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, an alliance of Gulf Arab nations has since March 26 been bombing the Iranian-backed Houthi militia and allied army units that control much of Yemen. Backed by Washington, top oil exporter Saudi Arabia worries that the Shi’ite Muslim Houthis are a proxy for arch-rival Iran to expand its sway in the Saudis’ backyard. Saudi-led air strikes on a rocket base in Sanaa on Monday killed 90 people and wounded 300, a local official was quoted as telling Saba. If confirmed, the death toll would be among the highest in a single bombing incident throughout Yemen’s war.

Sanaa residents said there were three air strikes on a base for army contingents aligned with the Houthis in the north of the capital on Tuesday, sending up a column of smoke. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel alJubeir was quoted as saying on Monday that the truce in Yemen may be extended if “(aid deliveries) succeeded and if the Houthis and their allies don’t engage in hostile activities”.

Adrian Edwards of U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said planes were poised to take off from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates bearing 300 tonnes of sleeping mats, blankets and tent material. “The UNHCR is making final preparations for a huge airlift of humanitarian aid into Yemen’s Sanaa, to take place over the next days if today’s proposed ceasefire comes into effect and holds,” he told a briefing in Geneva. In Aden, locals said four residents were killed in Houthi shelling, while four anti-Houthi militiamen operating a tank were killed in an Arab air strike - one of the first reported incidents of friendly fire since the campaign began. On Monday, the Houthis and Saudi forces exchanged heavy artillery fire along the two countries’ rugged desert border. UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva on Tuesday the total number of civilians killed since March 26 stood at 828, including 182 children and 91 women, with a further 1,500 injured.

Control over the federal party leaders’ debates, currently held by a handful of broadcasters, is being challenged by proposals from rival media companies – and Canada’s three major parties are open to these offers.

Televised election debates, where party leaders get a chance to square off in an unscripted manner, have traditionally been arranged by a consortium of major broadcasters including CTV, CBC and Global. This time, however, other news outlets are hoping to stage their own debates. The Globe and Mail is one of the organizations that is submitting a rival proposal this week to host a full leaders’ debate. Maclean’s magazine, owned by Rogers, and Quebec-based TVA have sent proposals to parties, as has the broadcast consortium. The consortium has been holding federal election debates for decades, but parties have sometimes chafed over the format dictated by the broadcasters. The Conservatives, in particular, are seeking more debates and a looser format.

Both the NDP and the Liberals say they are open to other propositions. A spokesman for a member of the consortium says it would not suffer if there were competing debates but says the current structure allows for higher overall viewership. The 2015 federal election is set for Oct. 19 under fixed-date election law, a change from past ballots that introduces more predictability for parties and the media. The shakeup in debate planning this year might mean a leader’s debate before the official campaign begins, such as in early September. The Conservatives, in particular, are keen to lessen the influence of the consortium over these debates.

They want to vary the format to allow more time for one-on-one debate between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau. The Tories say they’re confident Mr. Harper can top Mr. Trudeau in live debates, and the NDP feel similarly confident about Leader Tom Mulcair’s

chances against Mr. Harper. “We are in favour of more, rather than fewer, debates,” an NDP official said. A second New Democratic staffer added: “Tom has been pretty clear that he’ll debate the PM, pretty much anytime, anywhere. Bring it on.” Kate Purchase, director of communications for Mr. Trudeau, said the Liberals are not ruling anything out. “We’re open to any proposals, but we have not committed to anything at this point.” The broadcast consortium proposed as many as four debates, compared to two during the 2011 election campaign.

Should parties embrace the Maclean’s and TVA proposals, however, this could leave the consortium with only two debates. Another initiative, Up for Debate, has proposed a debate on women’s equality and Mr. Mulcair has accepted. Troy Reeb, senior vice-president of Global News, a member of the broadcast consortium, disputes the notion that the consortium would lose out if political leaders gravitated to debates staged by other media outlets. “I don’t think one media organization hosting a debate hurts another media organization’s debate,” Mr. Reeb said. He argued, however, that the consortium, through broadcast television, would be able to make the events available to more Canadians than other media might.

Still, arranging a greater number of debates risks diluting the audience drawn by any one debate. This might reduce the power and influence of the broadcast consortium debates. TVA, which played host to an independent leaders’ debate during the Quebec election campaign last year, declined to comment on what its plans are for the federal vote. In a recent editorial, Maclean’s said: “There’s no reason [the consortium] should have a monopoly over the design of leaders’ debates, the subjects addressed or the leaders invited. So let’s bust the broadcast consortium’s monopoly.”

US and Gulf allies to seek new security pact

The United States and its Gulf allies will try to agree on new security measures at a summit in Washington next week to counter Iran’s influence in the region, US Secretary of State John Kerry said. After marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe at the Arc De Triomphe in Paris, Kerry hosted on Friday his counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, as well as the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The Paris meeting set the stage for a summit next week in Washington and Camp David between US President Barack Obama and the six-nation GCC

on May 14. The Obama administration faces a formidable challenge to allay Gulf Arab fears over a nuclear deal with Tehran. The West hopes to secure a nuclear deal with Tehran by an end-of-June deadline and this has stirred anxiety among Washington’s Gulf allies who fear Iran’s intentions in the region. “President Obama completely understands the stakes,” Kerry told a news conference, “We are fleshing out a series of new commitments that will create between the United States and the GCC a new security understanding, a new set of security initiatives. That will take us beyond anything that we have had before,” he added. US officials have

told Reuters that the Washington summit would create a region-wide defence system to guard against Iranian missiles and could be accompanied by enhanced security commitments, new arms sales and more joint military exercises. “It is not a one-way street, it is a two-way street, with mutual interests and mutual needs that need to be addressed,” Kerry said.

“I am confident that with Camp David those views are going to take shape in a form that will greatly enhance our ability to meet the needs of our people, and the needs of all those people, who want a future that is free of terrorism,” he added.

Combined Forces crackdown taking a toll in Surrey drug turf war

Three people have been charged, nearly 500 vehicles checked, and 21 cars and $24,000 seized as a part of an investigation into a recent string of shootings propelled by a street-level drug trade turf war in Surrey and Delta. Investigators from multiple police agencies released some of those numbers Tuesday while vowing to continue their joint crackdown on the shootings. Since early March, Surrey RCMP and Delta Police have recorded 30 shootings, 15 of which are linked to a feud between two street-level drug groups in competition with each other.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, which also includes the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, five individuals have been arrested and charged or could soon be facing charges. Arman Dhatt faces 19 charges, Pardip Brar faces 12 charges, and Rajvir Sunner faces four charges. Two other men were also arrested but released,

pending further investigation. While victims linked to the shootings “remain uncooperative,” police say they are continuing a number of covert operations in order to identify witnesses and gather information.

“We are continuing to work together to ensure community safety and that those engaging in this behaviour will be held accountable,” said Acting Chief Const. Lyle Beaudoin of the Delta Police. “These incidents remain our top priority and focus.”

According to police, individuals and vehicles involved in the turf war also appear to be actively fleeing from police since the launch of the joint investigation. Since April 1, a total of 40 vehicles have failed to stop for police, including one occasion where a marked police car was rammed by a suspect vehicle attempting to avoid the traffic stop. On other occasions, vehicles are seen detouring around traffic stops in order

to avoid detection by police. “These criminals are once again showing a callous disregard for public safety by endangering the lives of the public through their reckless driving,” said Chief Supt. Bill Fordy of the Surrey RCMP. “Police officers do not engage in vehicle pursuits when it is deemed that a pursuit will endanger the lives of the public,” read a joint police statement. To date, a total of 499 vehicles have been checked; 198 violation tickets issued; 21 vehicles, 13 weapons, and $23,730 seized as a part of the traffic enforcement work done in the investigation.

“Police are doing everything they can to eliminate this threat,” said Chief Supt.

Kevin Hackett, officer in charge of the CFSEU-BC. “We are also collaborating with the community on many levels to ensure that we utilize all of the tools and resources available, including new and innovative approaches.” Included in those initiatives is a dedicated tip line launched in late April. The tip line has received 131 calls, with 14 considered as “being of high value to the investigation.”

Migrants intercepted at sea will not “be sent back against their will”, the European Union’s foreign policy chief has told the UN Security Council, in the context of a proposed EU maritime operation against the growing wave of migrant smuggling from North Africa. Federica Mogherini addressed the Security Council on Monday as the 28-member EU prepared to start making decisions next week on a controversial operation to identify, capture and destroy boats before they could be used by migrant smugglers. Mogherini told the Security Council that details of the operation were still being worked out and the issue would be discussed by European foreign ministers on May 18. “We cannot do it alone, this has to be a common global effort, that’s why we count on your support to save lives and dismantle criminal organisations that are exploiting people’s desperation,” she said. The plan would require the approval of Libya, from where most of the boats depart. Mogherini said she also met the UN ambassador for Libya, who last week largely rejected the plan. Critics of the proposal say military action in Libyan waters or to stop a vessel

flying the country’s flag without an international mandate would break international law. Stressing the urgency of the crisis as migrants continue to set off from the north African coast towards Europe and hundreds die, Mogherini later said the EU was prepared to take certain steps before the council adopted any resolution authorising the operation - even as a draft was expected to circulate to all 15 council members within hours. She would not say what those steps were. Concerns remained even among some Security Council members that the migrants themselves could be harmed, sent back or not be allowed to seek better lives. “No one is thinking of bombing,” Mogherini said. When asked about Russia, which has opposed destroying smugglers’ boats, she said she had not found resistance from any council member. But she said a lot of work remained on the draft resolution, even though she was “quite confident” about political will in the council for the two main goals: saving lives and combating the migrant traffickers, some of whom she said are “linked to, and sometimes finance, terrorist activities”. sentative for international migration told the Security Council that about half of the people who reached Europe qualified as refugees. Peter Sutherland praised a planned EU quota system where countries would share the refugee settlement burden. However, powerful member states such as Britain and the eastern Europeans are already opposing that plan, with Viktor Orban, Hungary’s prime minister, calling the proposal “mad”. The EU’s executive commission was to propose the plan on Wednesday as part of a strategy to help Italy, Greece and Malta cope with thousands of migrants. France’s top security official on Monday said his country supported the plan. Mogherini said the “new

agenda for migration” to be addressed on Wednesday would also do more to increase search-and-rescue operations and allow for more legal pathways into Europe.

Again, she did not give details. “We know we have to tackle all aspects of this tragedy,” she said, but she also argued that “dismantling traffickers ... is a way of saving lives.” Mogherini said the migrant crisis would require an effort larger than just the EU itself. “Europe has probably for once woken up,” she said. “We need the rest of the world to do its part as well.

The Vatican has concluded its first treaty that formally recognises the State of Palestine, with an agreement on Catholic Church activities in areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority, according to the Holy See. A joint statement released by the Vatican said

on Wednesday said the text of the treaty had been concluded and would be officially signed by the respective authorities “in the near future”. The agreement “aims to enhance the life and activities of the Catholic Church and its recognition at the judicial level”, said Monsignor Antoine Camilleri, the Vatican’s deputy foreign minister who led its delegation in the talks. Vatican officials stressed that although the agreement was significant, it certainly did not constitute the Holy See’s first

recognition of the State of Palestine. “We have recognised the State of Palestine ever since it was given recognition by the United Nations and it is already listed as the State of Palestine in our official yearbook,” Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesperson, said. On November 29, 2012, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution recognising Palestine as an observer non-member state. This was welcomed at the time by the Vatican, which has the same observer nonmember status at the UN. During a threeday visit to the Middle East a year ago, Pope Francis delighted his Palestinian hosts by referring to the “state of Palestine”, giving support for their bid for full statehood recognition. “The bus had a capacity of 52 passengers but it was overloaded and dozens of people were boarding it. Most of them were from (the) Ismaili community,” he added.

He used to prolong the prostration to such an extent that one could recite fifty verses (of the Quran) before he would lift his head. He used to pray two Rakat (Sunna) before the Fajr prayer and then used to lie down on his right side till the call-maker came and informed him about the prayer.

Hazrat ‘A’ishah (R.A) described his way of speaking as follows: “Allah’s Messenger did not ramble on the way you do these days. His speech was clear and precise. Those who listened to him easily remembered what he said.” [Sahih al-Bukhari (3568) and Sahih Muslim (2493)] Almost every day, he would sit in the mosque in Madinah with his Companions gathered around him.

He would often start a discussion by posing a question. Once, he asked: “Might I inform you of the gravest of major sins?” When his Companions replied in the affirmative, he said: “The gravest of major sins are to associate partners in worship with Allah, to disrespect your parents, and to bear false witness.” [Sahih al-Bukhari (2654)] Sometimes, he posed questions to open their eyes to some new idea or perspective that they had not thought of before. For instance, once he asked: “Do you know what it means to be bankrupt?”

They replied that it means to possess neither money nor goods. He said:With respect to my followers, the one who is bankrupt is one who is brought forth on the day of judgment with prayers, fasts, and charity to his credit, but he had spoken ill of some people, falsely accused some people, misappropriated the wealth of others, and assaulted people or shed their blood. Those he had wronged will be compensated from

those he had wronged will be compensated by having some of their sins placed on him. As a consequence, he is consigned to Hell. [Sahih Muslim (2581)] Sometimes, he simply wanted to stimulate their minds. Once he asked: “Tell me which tree is like a Muslim.

For instance, once he asked: “Who among you is fasting today?” This question took them off guard, since he had not even hinted to them earlier that they should fast on this day. Had he done so, they would have all been fasting.

Then he drew other smaller lines coming from the edges of the square and pointing inwards towards the larger straight line. Then he asked his Companions: “Do you know what this means?”

They replied: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: The line going through the middle of the box represents the human being. The other lines aiming towards it are the trials of life that come at him from all directions. If a person manages to avoid one of those trials, he will run into one of the others.

The surrounding square is the lifespan that encompasses a person. The extension of the line outside the box represent hiss hopes. The person remains busy with those hopes, but the term of life comes to an end before they are fulfilled. [Sahih al-Bukhari (6417)] The purpose of these daily gatherings in the mosque was to teach his Companions about Islam and provide them with moral lessons. However, it was not about lecturing or preaching.

It is always a dynamic discussion; never a one-way exchange, and it was always thought-provoking.

3 Days Ijtima @ Masjid Anwar e Madina in Surrey

From May 8 to May 10th,, Al Ghosia Foundation organized a 3 day Ijtima e Aam at Masjid Anwar e Madina Surrey to remember Miraj-un Nabi (SAW).

Mr. Salim Patel was the MC for this 3 days Ijtima. He was invited by the Masjid Committee to conduct this program in English and he delivered his speech on all three days to Muslim youth. A Special guest, Peer Syed Irfan Shah Mashadi Moosavi Kazmi Sheikh ul Hadith and Tafseer was invited from Pakistan, who is a well known Islamic scholar in Ahelsunnat wal Jamat in Pakistan.The Friday Prayer of May 8th was led by Peer Irfan in Masjid Anwar e Madina Surrey.

On first day of Ijtima on May 8th, the program topic was “ Why Ahlus Sunnah Wa Jama’ah of Sufi/ Barelvi /Miladi?

After the recitation of the Holy Quran and few Naat e Rasool Maqbool (saw), MC Mr. Salim Patel spoke about this topic and expressed his view for few minutes. He invited special guest speaker peer Irfan Shah at podium with the

permission of Imam and Khateeb of Masjid Anwar e Madina Syed Imroz Dean and gave the brief biography of the keynote speaker.

Syed Shah delivered a detailed speech on the topic with references.

May 9th was the day for Jashan e Mairaj un Nabi(saw) celebrations. MC Patel described the Incident of Miraj in English language with the references of Quran and Sunna. He then asked Peer Irfan Shah to deliver a speech on Isra Wa Al- Miraj. Peer Syed Irfan shah lecture was very focused on this topic, and he delivered his spiritual speech in his dynamic way in Urdu with the references of Quran and Sunnah. He said it is Miracle for our beloved prophet Mohammad (saw) and gift of Allah to him(saw).He recited many Verses from Para 4, 15 and others with the reference of many authentic Haidths of Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmazi and others. Third day session on May 10th was for Question and Answers but the Mairaj un Nabi (SAW) lecture was not completed on May 9th, so Peer Syed Shah continued the topic of Isra Wal Mairaj and quoted many Tafaseer and Fiqh books about this great challenging miracle. The questions were collected from the audience and the answers were given on next day before Peer Syed departure from BC. At the end of each day session after and Darood o Salam the Duaa were made for all Muslim Ummah with all the guests and delicious food was served every day.

Miraj-Un-Nabi Conference

By: Haroon Raza On May 09, Islamic Association of Western Canada in association with Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah held their Annual Miraj-un-Nabi Conference at Newton Community Centre, Surrey.

The program was well attended by Muslim community from all over Metro Vancouver.

Syed Badiuddin Soharwardy from Islamic Supreme Council of Canada especially travelled from Calgary to attend this program. BC’s renowned Aalims and speakers including Janab Shamas Jilani, Al-Haj Maulana Abudul Latif Naumani and Shaykh Sayed Nurjan Mirahmadi of Naqshbandi Centre, Vancouver were also shared their knowledge about the Waqia Miraj.

Program started with Tilawat-e-Quran-Pak followed by beautiful Naat Sharifs by Imaran and Abdul Rasool Salis. Janab Shamas Jilani spoke about the Waqia Miraj in detail and the journey of Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) from Musjid-e-Haraam to Musjid-e-Aqsa and from there to the 7th sky.

Maulana Abdul Latif Naumani described the

importance of Waqia Miraj and given the references of Quran and Ahadith to prove the reality of the Miraj. He stated that It is the consensus of the majority Ulama that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (PBUH) saw ALLAH with his naked eyes on the night of Me’raaj. Me’raaj surpassed the limits of human nature As Allah’s special servant was taken from Musjide-Haraam.

Shaykh Nurjan described the Waqia Miraj and ALLAH’s love for his beloved Habeeb (PBUH). He also explained the powers of ALLAH and his gift to his beloved NABI. The Beloved (PBUH) enjoyed such excellence that no one can share. He passed such places where no creation set foot. The Beloved (PBUH) traveled in the night of Me’raaj until he reached the station of Qaaba Qosain. No creation could reach this height nor possessed the courage to do so.

At the end Syed Badiuddin Soharwardy gave his speech about the Waqia Miraj. He explained how some people due to their lack of

knowledge and their ignorance in this field caused more confusion in their hearts because they failed to understand the unique relation between Allah and His Beloved Habeeb (PBUH). He insisted that one has to have a sound knowledge of the Qudrat of ALLAH and the Station and Status of His August Rasool (Peace Be Upon Him) before commenting on any matter pertaining to them. He detailed Waqia Miraj with proof from QUR’AN, Ahadith-e-Nabawi (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam), Sayings of Sahab-e-Kiram and from the writings of great and authentic scholars of Islam that the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Aalihi Wa Sallam did see ALLAH with his naked eyes and he also did proceed to the Divine Arsh on the night of Me’raaj.

The Holy Quran says: Holy is He who carried His bondman by night from the sacred Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque (Aqsa) around which We have put blessings that We might show him Our grand signs. No doubt, He is the Hearing, the Seeing. (Al Isra:1)

Sayings of Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him): 1. Imam Ahmad ibne Hambal (Radi ALLAH Anh) in his Musnad narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibne Abbaas (Radi ALLAH Anh) Sayyiduna Rasoolullah(Peace Be Upon Him) said, “I saw my Sublime Creator”.

2. Imam Muhaddith Ibne Asakar(R A) narrates from Sayyiduna Jaabir bin Abdullah(RA) that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah(PBUH) states: “Verily, Almighty ALLAH blessed Sayyiduna Moosa, with the privilege of Dialogue and cherished me with his Divine Vision and exalted me with the Crown of Intercession and the Fountain of Kauthar”.

3. Imam Asakar (RA) also narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibne Mas’ood (Radi ALLAH Anh) , who said:Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Peace Be Upon Him) states, “My Glorious Lord said to me, ‘I gave My friendship to Sayyiduna Ibraheem, and spoke to Sayyiduna Moosa, and O Muhammad ! I blessed you with My Meeting (where you saw My Divine Being without any obstacles)’”.

Program was concluded with Salam and Dua.

47K Raised at Annual May Fundraising Dinner for Masjid Al Salam

On May 9, the annual May fundraising dinner event was held at Masjid Al Salam & Islamic Education Centre in Burnaby.

Mr. Daud Ismail conducted this short program after Asar Prayer.

After the recitation of the Quranic verses, Mr. Ismail said that May and November were major annual fundraising for Masjid Al-salaam even before the construction started in 1997. They have been very successful with Allah’s blessings and the community’s support. He said, “Our vision was not only to have a traditional Masjid but an education centre. A place where young, old and the wider Canadian public can come together to learn about Islam, share the food and benefit diverse programs that the Masjid offers. Alhamdulillah, we are able to provide services such as food bank for the needy, seniors, youth and outreach programs. These programs cost money and a lot of volunteers.

You, the community made all this possible with your support and generosity. We are blessed and look forward to your continued financial support. Our target for the evening is $50,000 and I know you can make it possible.” He invited Masjid As-Salam Imam Yahya Momla to deliver his thoughts. He emphasized the importance of Masjid and how Allah (SWT) gives reward who help to build house of Allah on earth. Imam said Masjid As Salam required $50,000 to for its maintenance, and other expenses at this fundraising dinner and he encouraged all at-

tendees to participate to raise fund for this House of Allah(SWT) for themselves and for next generation. At the end with the collective efforts of everyone, and some Islamic Crafts auctioned the Masjid committee raised around$47,000 alhamdulillah.

Other speaker Mr. Daud Ali mentioned that since the BCMA Masjid As Salam Burnaby project started in 1997 Allhumdulillah almost 5.5 Million dollars have been raised. He told Miracle’s reporter that now we need $120, 000 /year to maintain all its services and expenses.

After Maghrib prayer, the members from BCMA served a delightful dinner that concluded the event. This annual fundraising dinner was a successful event and many thanks to all of the administrators, volunteers. In addition, Al-Salaam fundraising committee would like to thank all parents, friends and family members that donated funds to help maintain the Masjid expenses.

Nepal rocked by 7.3-magnitude earthquake near Mount Everest

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.3 and struck 42 miles (68km) west of the town of Namche Bazaar, close to Mount Everest. It was followed closely by at least six strong aftershocks.

Shockwaves were felt as far away as the Indian capital, Delhi, and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

In Lamosangu in Sindhulpalchok, witnesses described peo-

ple “screaming and weeping as if the world was ending”.

Krishna Lama and his fiveyear-old daughter ran from their camp. He said: “I could hardly hold my child it was shaking so much. My parents died in landslides last year. Now it seems it is our turn.”

In Kathmandu, parents could be seen clutching children tightly and hundreds of people were frantically trying to call relatives on their mobile phones.

Shopkeepers closed their stores and the streets were jammed with people rushing to check on their families.

There are fears of large numbers of death in regions closer to Everest, which lies in the north-east of the country. The quake’s epicentre was close to Everest base camp, which was evacuated after an avalanche triggered by the 25 April quake killed 18 climbers.

The latest disaster comes amid a humanitarian emergency in Nepal, with aid yet to reach many remote parts of the im-

poverished Himalayan nation after roads were wrecked by landslides.

The United Nations last week said it had received just $22m (£14m) of the $415m it has appealed for as it called for aid contributions to be “dramatically ramped up”. Rows were ongoing over the aid that had been sent, with western officials accusing the Nepalese government of trying to centralise its distribution, hampering efforts to reach those most in need. Nepal’s government came under fire when it closed its only international airportbecause the runway was deteriorating under the arrival of so many large aircraft.

More than three-quarters of the buildings in Kathmandu have already been judged uninhabitable or unsafe, according to a survey carried out at the beginning of May, with tens of thousands of people living under tarpaulins on open ground.

Strategic Planning for Organizations

By ASPIRE Training Institute On May 10, ASPIRE Training Institute successfully completed training sessions on Strategic Planning for Organizations. The training was conducted by Dr Ashraf Mohammed. Strategic planning is an organization’s activity that is used to set priorities, focus energy and resources, strengthen operations, establish agreement around intended outcomes/results, ensure employees, volunteers and stakeholders are working toward common goals and assess and adjust the organization’s direction in response to a changing environment. These activities of the organizations towards achieving its goal is in line with the organization’s, vision and mission statement which forms the foundation of the organization’s strategic goals based on the organization’s core values. The disciplined efforts of the organization produce fundamental decision and actions that shape and guide the organization it serves.

This adds value and reason for the organization’s on-going activities on not where it is

going with actions needed to make progress but also the ability to measure its success whilst remaining focussed on the organization’s future.

Strategic Planning involves setting goals, determining actions to achieve the goals, and mobilizing resources to execute the actions. A strategy describes how the goals/objectives will be achieved with the available resources. Thus a Strategic Plan is a document used to communicate the organization’s goals/objectives, the actions needed to achieve those goals/objectives and all of the other critical elements developed during the planning phase.

This training session equipped and empowered participants with skills and knowledge to participate and positively contribute to the development of a Strategic Plan and get the ‘buy-in’ from the relevant stakeholders in the implementation phase to achieve the organization’s goals. The training session was well attended by the participants from diverse non profit organizations. The training session ended with the concluding remarks

by Azim Dahya, Board Chair of the Muslim Food Bank Society. He thanked all participants for their successful completion of the course.

Great show of solidarity at “U.S. Hands Off Iraq!� protest and a surprise guest!

By Janine Solanki On Sunday May 10th, 2015 Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) coorganized with the Iraqi and Muslim community in Vancouver a protest rally against the United States intervention and meddling in Iraq, demanding “U.S. Out of Iraq!�

The protest rally took place in front of the U.S. consulate in Downtown Vancouver.

Protesters chanted energetically throughout the rally and held signs that said “Iraqis are United!� and “Stop USA’s Plans to Divide Iraq!� to protest the proposed U.S. bill that aims to divide Iraq into three separate countries.

Mamdoh Ashir, Iraqi-Canadian and Muslim community activist, MC’d and led the protest and invited up speakers from both the Iraqi and Muslim community as well as from MAWO. Speakers spoke against the many years of continued war, occupation and destruction inflicted on the Iraqi people by the oppressive U.S. military forces, and how the this new U.S. bill is an attempt to take their “divide and conquer� strategy in Iraq to a new and dangerous level. Speakers also vowed that the resistance of the Iraqi community and antiwar activists around the

world will continue to fight against war and foreign intervention in Iraq.

The protest was observed by hundreds of pedestrians who were walking to and from the waterfront area and many of them either stopped, picked up fliers and brochures or joined the protest. To our surprise, one of the hundreds of passer-by’s was the worldrenowned British comedian, actor and social justice activist Russell Brand. Without hesitation Russell Brand greeted the protesters and joined in holding a picket sign, spent some time with protesters and also shared some supportive words over the microphone in solidarity with the Iraqi people and against U.S. intervention in Iraq!

Activists vowed to continue protesting against the U.S. intervention in Iraq, with the next MAWO antiwar rally and petition campaign on Saturday May 23rd, 2pm at the Vancouver Art Gallery (Robson street at Howe street, Downtown Vancouver). Iqbal On May 2, The Maria-Helena Foundation held a seminar at Surrey Centre Library on Reducing Sectarian-Religious Violence in Pakistan: Mian speaker was Dr. Mohammad Iqbal founder of the Maria-Helena Foundation with other two supporting speaklers were Ms. Aden Dur-e-Aden and Ms Emilia Valsta.

Pakistan, a highly polarized and violent country is on the verge of societal breakdown. In this event ideas were discussed what diaspora can do to make Pakistan a cohesive and tolerant society. One idea was to honour eminent leaders from minority communities as a strategy for encouraging positive behaviour; the proposals included: 1.Establishing science scholarships in the name of Nobel Laureate Dr. Abdus Salam, an eminent leader from the Ahmadi community. How to do that? Individuals can contact their Alma Maters or other places of learning in Pakistan and offer such scholarships. For example; Dr. Iqbal has established several scholarships for high school girls in science at Rs.1,000 per month per student. These awards are available only to girls who stand first in their class in Middle Board Examination and go on as science students in high schools.

Tarbiyyah in the Arabic language means to raise a child (whether or not that child is their own), acting in his or her best interest until that child becomes independent and capable of managing its own affairs. Tarbiyyah includes following up the child’s nutrition, his or her physical, spiritual, and mental growth, and his or her education and acquisition of manners in such a way that the child is well taken care of, well-nourished, and well-mannered. The fruit of this labor is that when a child grows up to be a man or woman, they are equipped to handle the burdens of life, and they have the tools they need to have a successful Afterlife.

B. Tarbiyyah from a fiqh point of view is synonymous with the linguistic meaning, except that it is a little more specific. Fiqh is mainly concerned with the following three aspects of raising children: C. Educating them in a well-rounded way about what they need to know in terms of religious sciences, such as fiqh, and worldly knowledge, such as arithmetic.

D. Training them in Islamic behavior and values, for example in telling the truth, in good manners, such as respecting elders, and in refined etiquette as in eating in a calm manner.

E. Building and strengthening their Islamic identity such that they think of themselves as Muslims before they think of themselves as the sons or daughters of so-and-so, eastern or western, etc.

II. Educating the Children A. There is ample evidence from the Qur’an that educating children is necessary: Allah, Glorious and High, said: O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones...[66:6].

Al-Qurtubi said in his tafseer of this verse: “Some of the scholars have said that when Allah, Exalted and High, said: ‘Protect yourselves!’ that it included protecting one’s own children from the Fire of Hell because one’s children are a part one’s own self. Al-Qushayri reported that when this verse was revealed Umar ibn al-Khattaab said to the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam: “We can protect ourselves from the Fire of Hell, but how can we protect our families? “The Prophet(SAW) said: “By forbidding them from what Allah forbade and commanding them with what He commanded.” So because of this some scholars have said: “We must teach our children religion and goodness in addition to what good manners

should necessarily be known.”

B. Evidence from the Sunnah that a man is responsible for the education of his family: Bukhari reported that the Prophet(SAW) said: “There are three (kinds of) people who will be rewarded twice (double): (The first is) a man from the People of the Book who believed in his prophet and then believed in Muhammad (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam). (The second is) a slave that fulfilled his obligation to Allah and his obligation to his master. (The third is) a man that had a slave girl whom he taught good manners and taught them to her well, and whom he educated and educated her well, then set her free and married her. Thus shall he receive his reward twice (double).” Bukhari titled this hadeeth, A man educating his slave-girl and his family. Ibn Hajar explained why Bukhari considered this hadeeth as proof that a man is responsible for the education of his wife even thought the wife is not explicitly mentioned in the hadeeth. Ibn Hajar said: “The responsibility of a man toward his family [meaning explicitly wife and children) is greater than that toward his slave girl. “Therefore, this hadeeth is indirect proof that a man is responsible for the education of his wife and children.

III. Teaching Children Manners A. HERE ARE A TWO HADEETH ABOUT TEACHING BOYS GOOD MANNERS: Tirmithi reported that the Prophet(SAW) said: “A father has never given to a son a gift better than good manners.” Ibn Majah reported that the Prophet(SAW) said: “Be gracious with your children and teach them good manners.”

B. A HADEETH ABOUT TEACHING GIRLS GOOD MANNERS: Abu Dawud reported that the Prophet(SAW) said: “[A man] who raises three girls, and teaches them good manners, and marries them [to righteous men], and is good to them-for him is Paradise.”

C. THE TIME TO BEGIN TEACHING CHILDREN MANNERS: Training children begins when they are very small. It should, however, start out very slowly. As the child becomes more and more capable of reason, the training should become more and more intensive. From the time the child is very young until he or she reaches seven years of age there should be an abundance of love and gentleness. From seven to 10, the training should be come gradually more intense, but there should also be an abundance of patience and very little or no punishment. The most important and intensive period when it comes to training children is from age 10 to 14. Then the parent should be fully engaged in the training the child in good manners, and there should be reasonable punishment for bad behavior. The Prophet(SAW) said: “Command your children to pray salah when they are seven. Hit

them about it (meaning if they willfully do not pray) when they are ten and separate (at that age) between them in bed.”

IV. Establishing the Muslim Identity of the Child A. WHAT DO WE MEAN BY MUSLIM IDENTITY? Having a Muslim identity means the child is a Muslim in terms of his other thinking, speech, actions, behavior, ways, goals, purpose in life, perspective on affairs, how one judges matters, how one interacts with others, how one strives to spread Islam and establish truth and extinguish falsehood, and how one holds strongly to Islamic principles, even if others abandon them. In short, what we mean by Muslim identity is that a person strives to be upright in and of him or herself, and strives to help others be upright.

B. THE ADVICE OF LUQMAN TO HIS SON The Quran gives an example of a father admonishing his son for all fathers to follow. Luqman’s admonitions to his son consist of three main points that revolve around establishing one’s Muslim identity.

1. He teaches his son the Oneness of Allah (31:13-16) and teaching him about Allah and His attributes-namely that He has unlimited knowledge 2. He teaches his son to be righteous, in and of himself, and to command others to be righteous. Luqman does so by commanding him to pray salah (31:17), enjoin others to goodness, to forbid them from evil, and to be patient with the afflictions Allah tests people with 3. He teaches his son to stay away from boasting and arrogance C. THE PROPHET’S ADVICE TO IBN ABBAS Tirmithi reported that Ibn Abbas said: “I was behind the Prophet(SAW) one day [riding], and he said: ‘Young man! Let me teach you some words [of wisdom]. Observe the boundaries of Allah, and Allah will protect you. Observe the boundaries of Allah, and you will find Allah near. And if you ask, ask Allah.

And if you seek support, seek support from Allah. And know that the entire Ummah, if it gathers together to benefit you with something, they will not be able to benefit you with something, except for a thing that Allah has written for you. And if they gather together to harm you, they will not be able to harm you with something, except with something that Allah has written against you. The pens have been lifted and the scrolls are dry.”

Every parent should teach their child what Luqman taught his son and what the Prophet (SAW) taught Ibn ‘Abbas. All of what the Prophet(SAW) taught Ibn Abbas in this hadeeth revolves around a principle that the child should recognize: Everything is in the hands of Allah. So they should turn to Him. Nothing is in the hands of people. So they should not seek to please people.

This is the core value we should seek to instill in our children.

6 Appetite-Control Strategies that Helped Me Stop Overeating

It can be hard not to overeat. You eat a healthy meal at home, think you’re doing well, then you head out (to almost any destination) and are surrounded by junk food.

You get hungry, and pretty soon you’re at the local burger joint, diet forgotten.

Or maybe you stick to the “right” foods, but they’re just so good that you can’t have just one portion. We’ve all been there. That used to be me.

The following six strategies have changed the game for me—now I’m healthier, enjoy my meals more, and my appetite is low enough that, if anything, I have to make an effort to eat more!

Add Vinegar and Cinnamon to Meals to Control Blood Sugar Looking to add some flavor to your food and noncaloric drinks? Forget the sugar; there are plenty of spices and flavors that will make your food both tastier and healthier.

Vinegar, which has been shown to lower the glycemic index, (meaning you metabolize the food more slowly) adds acidic flavor to salad dressings, sauces and roasted veggies without a lot of calories.

For sweet-smelling warmth, add cinnamon to everything from coffee and smoothies to

chili. Like vinegar, cinnamon slows the rate at which food transits from your stomach to your intestine—this keeps you full longer, and helps prevent the post-meal slump.

Eat When You’re not Hungry When you get really hungry, you overeat.

I know, groundbreaking stuff. When you overeat, you feel full, but then your insulin levels spike, causing you to feel tired, then hungry again … so you overeat again.

Instead of trying to resist hunger, beat it to the punch. If you eat when you’re either not hungry or only slightly hungry, you’ll eat less and tend to eat more slowly. Eating less throughout the day is great, but having more energy is certainly a nice bonus, too!

Drink Water, not Liquid Calories In addition to tiredness and brain fog, mild dehydration can cause a sensation that’s easily mistaken for hunger. On the other hand, liquid calories such as juices and sodas don’t fill you up, and their rapid digestion causes insulin spikes. So pass on the sweetened drinks, and stick with sparkling or still water—you can flavor it with lemon, strawberries or cucumber if you want, but don’t pack your drinks full of calories.

Aim to drink at least three-quarters of a gal-

lon of water a day. Also, be sure to drink a glass about 20 minutes before each meal to take the edge of your appetite.

Eat Slowly When you swallow food, there’s a sizable delay before you feel any satiation from it.

This delay is usually between 10-30 minutes. Because of this delay, we tend to eat more food than we really need. And the faster we eat, the more we tend to consume, particularly later on in a meal.

The solution: Chew each bite 10 times. Following this simple rule will cause you to eat more slowly, allowing your mind to catch up to your stomach. You’ll also enjoy your food more when you take the time to savor it.

Have a Small, Flavorless Snack Between Meals This trick was discovered by the late Seth Roberts: What he did was consume a shot of olive oil or a glass of water with a tiny bit of sugar (an exception to the rule on sugared beverages above) between meals. I prefer a handful of unsalted almonds. Doing this once a day dramatically reduced my appetite—this can be particularly true if you have a lot of weight to lose.

This is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever tried, but it worked for me. The reason this works: it apparently regulates ghrelin, a hunger hormone, by weakening flavor-calorie associations. For this to work, the snack must be bland, and you should consume nothing else but water for at least an hour before and after the snack.

Try the Front Door Snack Technique This last item is one of my favorite body hacks. Knowing that your willpower is reduced when you’re hungry, and there’s more tempting junk food outside the home than in it, you should fill up on healthy food before leaving home. Keep a healthy snack, such as jerky, almonds or kale chips, right next to your front door, and eat some before you leave home. This will cause healthy food to “crowd out” unhealthy food in your diet, and make it much easier to pass on the junk food.

Amir Khan refuses to rule out clash with Mayweather

Amir Khan has admitted he could return to training in time for a September clash with Floyd Mayweather if he was offered this fight date by the undefeated American. Mayweather extended his unbeaten record to 48 wins with a dominant points win over Manny Pacquiao at the weekend and then stated his intention to retire after one final fight in four months’ time. Khan’s desire to observe Ramadan was thought to have ruled him out of this timescale, but this year’s Muslim festival ends on July 17, leaving the British fighter more time to complete a full training camp. “I’m not ruling out fighting in September because it’s possible that it could happen,” Khan said.

“Mayweather only fights in mid-September and Ramadan will be a little earlier this year, which helps. It gives me enough time to get the

training done. So it can happen in September.”

Khan was at ringside in Las Vegas and insisted he spotted signs of ‘panic’ from Mayweather, despite his one-sided victory over Pacquiao.

He fuelled speculation about a possible showdown by suggesting he was approached by Mayweather’s advisor Leonard Ellerbe, while the 38-year-old’s father Floyd Snr also mentioned Khan as a potential opponent. “Mayweather looked great, he did what he had to do to win the fight, his accuracy was nothing but the best,” he said. “Mayweather is very skilful and patient and tries to make his opponents make mistakes. His work rate dropped tremendously because of his age. “There were a few things there that I’d not seen before. When he takes a good shot he does panic. “The only way to catch Floyd is with speed and explosiveness, which Manny had, but Manny didn’t

use that enough in the fight.”

However, Khan must first defeat Chris Algieri before he can think about a fight with Mayweather. Algieri was knocked down six times in a November points defeat by Pacquiao, but Khan insists he will not take the New Yorker lightly when he faces him at his hometown venue of the Barclays Center on May 29. “I need to win this fight if I’m to get near any of the big names in boxing. It’s time to fight Chris Algieri, I’m not going to be fighting Mayweather until I win this fight,” he said. “Winning this fight is everything to me. I’m not looking past Chris be-

cause I’ve made that mistake in the past. There are bigger fights out there for me, but this is my focus.”

PCB bullish about India series in December PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan has said Pakistan will play India in a full series comprising three Tests, five ODIs and two T20 internationals in the UAE in December. Shaharyar was speaking in Kolkata, after meeting with BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya. “We resume the India-Pak series in UAE. This is the re-beginning of the revival of Indo-Pak cricket,” Shaharyar said. “The series will start in December as per schedule and it will comprise three Tests, five ODIs and two T20s. The preparation is on in full swing. We have to overcome the final hurdle. You may know as per the MOU there will be five series between the two countries in eight years.” Dalmiya’s

comments were more measured and acknowledged the role of the Indian government’s stand on the issue of bilateral series against Pakistan. “We are very hopeful of reviving the series,” Dalmiya said. “Only few things need to be sorted out and obviously without common support we cannot go forward. Without the support of the home ministry and government we can’t go forward.” A release from the BCCI said, “The two boards would be in regular touch and review the situation.” India and Pakistan have played one bilateral limited-overs series in the last seven years - three ODIs and two T20 internationals in India in December 2012-13. The last Test series

between the sides was in November and December 2007, when Pakistan toured India. Political relations between the two countries were strained following the terror attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 and bilateral series between the two countries were put on ice for several years. In May 2014, the PCB said it had signed an MOU with the BCCI for the resumption of bilateral series, and the following month it said the MOUs had become “binding agreements.” The BCCI, however, has not been as forthcoming about India playing Pakistan.

6 May, 19 Pakistani Vice Chancellors, representatives of the British Council and Higher Education Commission Pakistan, concluded a ten-day study tour in Vancouver, Canada. The tour was hosted in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), the British Council Pakistan and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.

“This is not just a visit, it’s been a whole education, exposure, bounding in the most lovely environment. It’s been a “wow” experience throughout,” said Nishat Riaz, Director of Education for the British Council in Pakistan.

The study tour focused on learning from the experiences of their counterparts from the leading institutions in British Columbia, Canada and included presentations, networking and workshops.

Professor Dr. Zahoor A. Swati, Vice Chancellor, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa University of Agriculture, Peshwar, Pakistan, said, “the institutions provided opportunity to learn abut the reasons of their success and where we lack and can improve to achieve excellence in our own functioning”.

The delegates gained more from the study tour than just Canadian expertise; they learned and shared challenges and ideas with each other. “One of the most important outcomes of this training is the developed understanding between Vice Chancellors of different universities from different parts of Pakistan, which will definitely have long-term positive impact in the country,” said Dr.Shahida Hasnain, Vice Chancellor of the Women University, Multan, Pakistan.

The study tour concluded on May 6th with a farewell dinner reception hosted by Pakistan’s Consul General, his Excellency Dr Muhammad Tariq, at the scenic Queen Elizabeth Park, Seasons in the Park restaurant.

The gathering brought together members of the Pakistan consulate, Vice Chancellors, the Commonwealth of Learning, the British Council, representatives from BC’s colleges and universities and members of the media. The evening concluded with short remarks and farewell thanks and presentations by the Vice Chancellors.

British Council Pakistan British Council Pakistan has worked consistently with Higher Education Commission to make access to higher education easier for the average Pakistani. Sustainable development and institutional capacity building of the Higher Education Sector in Pakistan have been the primary objectives of these projects. Leadership Programme is one of the flagship projects of British Council. 14 programmes have been conducted for University Vice Chancellors and Senior Management in the UK Higher Education Commission Pakistan The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan is an independent institution of primary funding, overseeing, regulating, and accrediting the higher education efforts in Pa-

kistan. HEC is made responsible for formulating higher education policy and quality assurance to meet the international standards as well as providing accrediting academic degrees, development of new institutions, and uplift of existing institutions in Pakistan. Over the last 10 years the number of universities increased from 59 to 180.

Commonwealth of Learning The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is an intergovernmental organisation created by Commonwealth Heads of Government to encourage the development and sharing of open learning/distance education knowledge, resources and technologies.

COL is a world leader in open and distance learning (ODL) and open educational resources (OER). COL works towards the substantial and equitable increase in the number of Commonwealth citizens acquiring the knowledge and skills for leading productive and healthy lives, through formal and non-formal open and distance learning opportunities. Gender and eLearning are cross-cutting themes that underpin everything that COL does.

COL assists developing nations to improve access to quality education and training by helping governments to expand the scale, efficiency, quality and sustainability of learning by using appropriate technologies, particularly those that support open and distance learning.

Baabul Ilm Education Society Hosted a Dinner Honouring the Visiting Vice Chancellors from Pakistan

By Dr. Mohammad Akbar Baabul Ilm Education Society, a non-profit organization promoting higher education among the Muslim youth of the Lower mainland, hosted a dinner in honour of the visiting delegation of Vice Chancellors (VCs) from various universities of Pakistan at Madina restaurant in Surrey.

The delegation comprised of 18 VCs, a director general from Higher Education Commission, and representatives of Brit-

ish Council, and Common Wealth. Also present on the occasion were Wayne Tebb, Dean School of Business, representing Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Dr. Zareen Naqvi, director institutional research and planning representing Simson Fraser University (SFU), Renowned scholar and researcher Dr. Nasir Zaidi represented the Muslim community of the Lower Mainland, Dr. Abdul Qadir, and Mr. Nadeem Kazmi represented the Baabul Ilm Education society. Dr. Mohammad Tariq, the Council General of Pakistan was also present.

Speaking on the occasion Wayne Tebb gave a brief introduction of the Kwantlen Polytechnic University and highlighted the prospects of establishing a relationship with universities in Pakistan. He also talked about the multicultural environment at Kwantlen. He mentioned that students at Kwantlen are from a diverse cultural, reli-

gious, and linguistic background. Dr. Zareen Naqvi welcomed the visit by the VCs from Pakistan and spoke about the importance of following up on such visits and the contacts established during these visits. She also showed interest in having some kind of exchange program between SFU and Pakistani universities. Dr. Nasir Zaidi, expert on Quranic studies and Fiqh-e-Islami talked about the importance of education both religious and otherwise. He also enlightened the delegation about the excellent research work

that he is carrying out in Canada.

Each member of the visiting delegation introduced themselves and spoke about their institution. In the end the head of the delegation, the director general of Higher Education Commission thanked Babul Ilm Education Society for inviting the delegation and proving the opportunity to meet representatives of various Canadian universities and communities.

This was followed by a delicious dinner specially prepared by Qamar Abbas of the Madina restaurant.
