WELCOME TO THE STAGHORN To 2018 Staghorn Participants, On behalf of the Members and Staff of Mirabel Golf Club we welcome you to Scottsdale, Arizona and the Mirabel Golf Club. The Mirabel Staghorn Member-Guest tournament is one of our signature events and we look forward to seeing those returning and meeting our first time participants.

We are proud of our Tom Fazio golf course and Frank Lloyd Wright inspired clubhouse. Most of all, we are proud of the incredible staff and professionals that provide the “Mirabel Experience” for all members and guests. Recently, our golf course underwent major renovations to expand our already great practice facility, rebuild our bunkers, and refresh our tees boxes, along with adding a new 10th tee grill area to take our “Mirabel Experience” to another level in 2018. Make sure to stop by our updated Men’s locker room with new indoor and outdoor furniture for players to enjoy a drink after a round of golf.

Our Staghorn Committee is proud to recognize a talented staff of professionals that have planned and prepared the golf course and club for a great 2018 Staghorn. Jeff Goren and his grounds crew, will as always, have prepared the course for tournament conditions. Head Golf Professional David Engram along with Andy Morris and the entire golf staff have organized a memorable few days of golf and competition with 14 flights playing from 4 sets of tees. Our General Manager Marcie Mills, Food and Beverage Director Matt Proch and Executive Chef Bruce Christensen will STAGHORN COMMITTEE provide players and guests a superior Chairman culinary and entertainment experience.

GUEST INFORMATION CELL PHONES: The overt use of cell phones is prohibited on the golf course and inside The Clubhouse, except in the Locker Room Lounges and the Private Dining Room. Out of courtesy to Members and other guests, please switch all wireless devices to silent mode, and step outside to take or make outgoing calls.

DRESS CODE: Golf Course: Proper attire for golf includes slacks, golf shorts no shorter than 4” above the knee, shirts with sleeves and collars, and soft-spike golf shoes.

INDOOR DINING: Gentlemen are welcome in slacks, golf or other collared shirts, dress shirts and or sweaters. Jeans are not considered proper attire for indoor dining. Gentlemen are expected to remove their hats while in the bar and dining room at all times. Ladies are welcome in dresses, skirts, slacks, mid-length shorts, and golf attire.

OUTDOOR DINING: All are welcome in casual apparel befitting a club of our nature.

Gentlemen are not required to remove their hats.

HANDICAPS There is a maximum of 10 strokes that can separate the low player’s handicap from the higher player’s handicap on any given team.

The handicap indexes used will be the lowest index from April 1st, 2017 to April 1st, 2018. Handicaps will also be adjusted based on exceptional recent Tournament performance.

Members are required to maintain a current Mirabel handicap. Guests are required to use a current and active USGA handicap. Handicaps used will be 90% of the players course adjusted handicap. Half shots will used for the 9 hole matches.

LOSS OF A PLAYER In the unfortunate event of injury or other loss of player, a match may be played 2 on 1, but the maximum number of points that can be awarded is limited to 7.

INCLEMENT WEATHER In the event of inclement weather preventing the completion of all rounds, the Committee will make a determination as to the most equitable course of action to determine flight winners. A Shoot-Out format will remain the method by which a Champion is determined.

FORMAT Flights are determined by combining the team members’ handicap indexes in ascending (low to high) order for each flight.

Each match will consist of nine holes of better ball (net) match play. The net better ball of the twosome plays against the net better ball of the opposing twosome.

Handicaps will be “wheeled” off the low handicap in each match. The low individual of the foursome will be reduced to “0” and the other individuals will be reduced according to the low handicap.

Flights are determined by the team’s total handicap index. Handicaps are adjusted to the tees each flight will play. Tee designations are subject to revision based on the overall handicap breakdown for the field. Typical tee designations are as follows:

SCORING POINTS ARE AWARDED AS FOLLOWS: 1 Point for winning a hole ½ Point for tying a hole The team in each flight with the most points after 45 holes will be the Flight Champion and qualify for the Champions’ Shoot-out Saturday afternoon.

This will result in a total of 14 teams that will qualify for the Champions’ Shoot-out. All ties for flight winners will also advance to the Shoot-out.

FLIGHT TIES If a tie occurs in determining the Flight Champion it will be broken by the head-to-head results from their match. If that match was tied, the tie will be broken by a scorecard playoff, beginning with the best ball total of 9 holes, then the last 6 holes, then the last 3 holes and finally the last hole.

All ties for Flight Champion earn a spot in the Champions’ Shoot-out.

ADDITIONAL CONTESTS PUTTING SKINS GAME AND SHORT GAME SKILLS COMPETITION During Wednesday evening’s cocktail hour, players are invited to join in a Putting Skins Game and Short Game Skills competition at the lower Practice Facility. Our golf professional staff will be hosting these cash games ($10 each) for some fun and friendly competition to start our Stag evening. Drinks and appetizers will be available at the Practice Facility as well.

PLAYERS SURVEY During Thursday’s round, our staff will perform a survey of each player to identify trends and preferences within the field. Results of the survey will be made available on Friday.

TEAM BUY IN There is an optional team buy-in of $200.  The payouts will be for the Staghorn Champion, Runner-up, 3rd Place, 4th Place, each Flight Champion, each Flight Runner-up and the remaining teams in the Champion’s Flight.

SHOOT-OUT PARI MUTUELS There will be pari-mutuel opportunities after match 5 at the Scoreboard Table on the Desert Lodge Patio. You may place a bet on any team that is participating in the Shoot-Out. There will be payouts for a Win, Place, or Show.

SHOOT-OUT FORMAT ALTERNATE SHOT Pure Alternate Shot format. Each team selects a player to begin the competition and they alternate each shot. Once all teams are on the green, the team farthest away will have the honor and putt continuously until the ball is holed. The Shoot-out will be played on Hole 18 only.

Round 1 no more than 8 teams will advance, and teams making worse than Bogey will be eliminated.

Round 2 we will eliminate 4 teams (4 remaining).

Round 3 two teams will be eliminated; if necessary, those teams will have a chipoff to determine third and fourth place.

Round 4 we will play 18 a final time with two teams to crown the Staghorn Champion.

TIES In the event of a tie, teams will compete in a chip-off. The team member that chips will fall into the alternate shot rotation. All players must turn their backs when a player is chipping. The teams that are furthest from the hole will be eliminated.

HANDICAPS There are no handicaps for the Shootout. The different flights will hit from the distances noted below on hole #18.

HOGAN, JONES & SNEAD - 170 YARDS HAGEN, VARDON, SARAZEN, NICKLAUS - 155 YARDS NELSON, ARMOUR, PALMER & STEWART - 145 YARDS PICARD, WATSON & TREVINO - 130 YARDS TIE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP Teams that are tied for the Championship will be directed back to #18 for a playoff. If the teams are tied after two playoff holes, both team members will chip-off and the closest chip between the two teams will be the winner.

RULES •

USGA Rules will govern all play.

•

Out of Bounds is defined by perimeter walls and fences including those around existing homes and homes under construction.

•

Players receive free relief from tree wells surrounded by 360 degrees of grassed area. Free relief consists of stance and swing from the tree well only and not the tree itself.

•

Players may receive one Mirabel Scorecard’s length relief from the Desert edge. Ball must be placed in the desert.

•

The One Ball Rule is NOT in effect.

•

The 14 Club Rule is in effect.

•

Distance measuring devices will be permitted, provided they do not measure elevation or slope.

•

Immovable obstruction on or near putting green (i.e. sprinkler rule): Relief may be provided from intervention on the line of play by immovable obstructions on or within two club lengths of the putting green when the ball lies within two club lengths of the obstruction.

Ball must be dropped at the nearest point of relief no nearer to the hole. A player does not receive relief if their ball lies within a hazard.

Ball may be cleaned when lifted.

•

Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1 are modified as follows: When a player’s ball lies on the putting green, there is no penalty if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment.

The moved ball or ball-marker must be replaced as provided in Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1.

This Local Rule applies only when the player’s ball or ball-marker lies on the putting green and any movement is accidental.

Note: If it is determined that a player’s ball on the putting green was moved as a result of wind, water or some other natural cause such as the effects of gravity, the ball must be played as it lies from its new location. A ball-marker moved in such circumstances is replaced.”

FLIGHT HISTORY B E N H O G A N : Mr. Hogan has 64 victories on tour and 9 major championships. In 292 events Hogan finished in the top 3 in 46.7-percent of them. In 1953 Hogan won three majors in one season, the first to do so. Hogan battled a hook early on, but eventually changed his game to hit a controlled fade. He then began winning often. Hogan once said, “I hate a hook. It nauseates me. I could vomit when I see one. It’s like a rattlesnake in your pocket.”

S A M S N E A D : With 82 PGA Tour wins he has won more than any player ever, in fact it is estimated he has won up to 160 professional tournaments worldwide. He holds the record for most victories in a single event by winning the Greensboro Open 8 times. His long drives earned him the nickname “Slammin’ Sam.” Snead won 7 majors in his career.

One golfer once said, “Watching Sammy practice hitting balls is like watching a fish practice swimming.”

B O B B Y J O N E S : Some say Jones is the greatest golfer who ever lived.

He only played about 3 months of any given year, managing to win 7 majors and 6 amateur championships. In 1930 he won the US Open, US Amateur, British Open and the British Amateur in the same year. Jones founded Augusta National and the Masters Tournament. Jones retired from competitive golf at the age of 28.

W A L T E R H A G E N : 44 tour victories and 11 major championships might be impressive, but he is known for single-handedly legitimizing the PGA tour, and using endorsements and sponsorships to guarantee great crowds. Hagen lived lavishly and was the first athlete named to the list of Best Dressed Americans. He hit the ball erratically, but his recoveries were world renowned. Bobby Jones said, “When a man misses his drive, and then misses his second shot, and then wins the hole with a birdie, it gets my goat.”

H A R R Y V A R D O N : This man is best known for the way he gripped the club which is widely used and known as the Vardon Grip. Probably more important to him is that he won 62 times and 7 major championships. He won the British Open a record 6 times. He is considered the first international golf celebrity, and one of the games most influential players. Scoring leaders on both the PGA and European tours are awarded the Harry Vardon Trophy. Vardon once said, “One must not play too much golf. Two rounds a day is plenty.”

GENE SARAZEN: He is the first man to win the career grand slam, victories in each of the four majors. He won 39 tour events including 7 major championships. He is also known for inventing the modern sand wedge after he noticed how an airplane’s tail adjusted during flight. He argued unsuccessfully for enlarging the hole size, believing golf would be more exciting with more putts holed. His real name was Eugenio Saraceni. He once said, “I don’t care what you say about me. Just spell the name right.”

BYRON NELSON: From1942 and ending in 1946, Nelson finished in the top 10 in 65 consecutive tournaments. He won 52 times including 5 major championships. His swing is considered the first “modern” swing and serves as the model for the mechanical testing robot that is known as “Iron Byron.” He mentored many young golfers including Ken Venturi and Tom Watson. Ken Venturi said, “You can always argue who was the greatest player, but Byron is the finest gentlemen the game has ever known.”

TOMMY ARMOUR: Nicknamed The Silver Scot, Armour had 25 tour victories with 3 major championships. Armour is believed to coin the term “yips” to describe the nervous affliction over short putts. Armour was also one of the greatest teachers of the game charging some of the highest rates of the time. He is considered one of the finest iron players of his or any era. Author Ross Goodner said, “At one time or another, he was known as the greatest iron player, greatest raconteur, the greatest drinker and most expensive teacher in golf.”

PAYNE STEWART: We’ll never know how good his career could have been. He died in a bizarre plane crash of hypoxia as the air pressure in the planes cabin slowly leaked. The plane eventually crashed. This was just months after he had won his 3rd major at the US Open in 1999 outlasting Phil Mickelson. He also had 11 victories in total on tour. He had a great commitment to charity and was known for his respect to the game. He is also known for the knickers, colorful socks and tam o’shanter hat that he wore. The golf world still misses him.

HENRY PICARD: Mr. Picard, nicknamed “The Chocolate Soldier” and “The Hershey Hurricane” from his roots in Hershey, PA, was a leading PGA Tour player in the 1930’s. He won the 1938 Masters and the 1939 PGA Championship and was a member of two victorious Ryder Cup teams. Upon retiring from competition in 1973, he was instrumental in teaching the game of golf. It should be noted that Henry Picard was a mentor and teacher to Mirabel Head Professional David Engram from 1988 - 1997. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.

ARNOLD PALMER: Nicknamed “The King,” he is one of golf’s most popular stars and its most important trailblazer, because he was the first superstar of the sport’s television age, which began in the 1950s. He is part of “The Big Three” in golf, along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, who are widely credited with popularizing and commercializing the sport around the world.

JACK NICKLAUS: Jack’s competitive career spanned five decades, and his legend has been built with 118 professional tournament victories worldwide across all tours and a record 18 professional majorchampionship titles (six Masters, five PGA Championships, four U.S. Opens, three British Opens). He is one of only five golfers—Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Tiger Woods the others—who have won all four of golf’s modern majors, an achievement often referred to as the career “Grand Slam.” Jack remains the only player to have completed the career Grand Slam on both the regular and senior tours.

TOM WATSON: In the 1970s and 1980s, Watson was one of the leading players in the world, winning eight major championships and heading the PGA Tour money list five times. In Watson’s illustrious career, his eight major championships include five Open Championships, two Masters titles, and one U.S. Open title. In all, Watson’s eight majors ranks 6th on the list of total major championship victories, behind only Nicklaus, Woods, Walter Hagen, Hogan, and Player.

LEE TREVINO: He won six major championships over the course of his career. He is one of only four players to twice win the U.S. Open, The Open Championship and the PGA Championship. The only major that eluded him was the Masters. He is an icon for Mexican Americans, and is often referred to as “The Merry Mex” and “Supermex,” both affectionate nicknames given to him by other golfers.
