Dear Mirabel Members, September is here and we could not be more excited! In a little over a week’s time, we will be welcoming our coaches and teams who are participating in this year’s Maui Jim Intercollegiate. The tournament this year has changed a bit, but will prove to be an exciting field of competition for these exceptional golfers. Thank you in advance for your willingness to volunteer your time for this very special event.

As overseeding approaches, we are tweaking our calendar of events and getting ready for an action-packed season!

Our new Executive Chef, Jon Hearnsberger, will arrive in mid-September. He is very anxious to get started and work with Seth and the team to create new menu offerings for you to enjoy! We certainly have a lot to look forward to this coming season, and hope that you all have the date of Saturday, November 13 on your calendar as we commemorate and celebrate our very special 20th Anniversary.

Over the next several months, we will also be recruiting for team members in all areas of the operation. This brings me to our most relevant topic of conversation: labor. We have all been reading and seeing the headlines regarding the very competitive landscape of our American labor market. It is affecting all industries, not just hospitality. At a recent seminar, I was surprised by some facts and figures that are impacting our universities. There is an alarming drop in enrollment at all of the top hospitality schools in the country by 10- 60%. In addition, there is also a considerable drop in enrollment for agronomy and golf programs as well.

Our industry is one that requires demanding hours, nights, weekends and holidays. It is an industry that requires a true passion for service and people. In exchange for the long hours, one is rewarded with a fun and attractive, ever-changing, day-to-day in a positive culture and appreciative environment. Not to mention, as in our case, a premier environment with exceptional Members and team members, with leaders who are invested in team development and service training. Employee benefits are attractive, including our newest initiatives, the Employee Scholarship Fund, and the Mirabel Magic Network. These ancillary benefits are what makes Mirabel so special and are certainly a differentiator in market positioning for recruiting team members.

Hourly wages have significantly increased across the board. We have remained short-staffed in golf course operations throughout the year, being 5 to 8 employees down at a time. We are competing not only with other private clubs in the Valley, but those of retail operations and locations of close proximity, as well as all chain restaurants, Amazon, and work environments that offer normal and stable hours of operation.

The global pandemic certainly has had an impact and contributed to this, as people shift and redefine their priorities.

Private Clubs are certainly one of the best kept secrets in hospitality environments. We spend a lot of time in our Associations reaching out to university students across the country to help spread the word of why they should work in private clubs vs. hotels and / or independent hospitality environments. While corporate hospitality cut jobs during the pandemic, golf surged and clubs fought hard to retain and reward their employees. I know I speak for all of us when I express the amount of gratitude we have for all of you in sustaining our employment during these tough times.

One of our main initiatives for our Strategic Plan this year is Human Capital, with the main focus on recruiting and retaining top talent. We may call on some of you for assistance as we would like to organize a "think tank” of human resources executives to drive some innovative initiatives. What else can we do that we are not considering? How do we further position ourselves as an employer of choice? What creative concepts can we develop and foster to entice employees to come work with us, despite the distance from their homes?

As we ponder the state of our labor landscape this coming year, I have been speaking to multiple colleagues on the East Coast as they are winding up their seasons. They are all short-staffed. Some clubs have had to minimize hours of operation to spread labor across their operations. As costs increase, member expectations rise. The challenge becomes, how do we deliver an exceptional service experience, when volume is up and staffing levels are down? I wish I had the answer and the magic wand. This challenge is real and it is impacting all private clubs throughout the country.

So how will this affect Mirabel? We are planning for an event-filled season, open as normal. Our ultimate goal is to provide you with the exceptional Mirabel experience that you have come to expect as our Members. We are going into hiring season being optimistic, championing our Mirabel Magic culture and environment as an employer of choice.

We will dedicate more of our time to training, and building, and evolving our culture, as hiring becomes increasingly difficult. We will need to hire less experience, and train, coach and reward quality performance. Lastly, we will need to make more of an effort to provide a more balanced work week for our team members to avoid burnout, which is another real factor impacting our industry recruitment efforts.

Despite our optimism, we may need to pivot; we may need to adjust hours of operation or shift things from time to time. In speaking to other clubs, many have already had to make adjustments to operating hours due to labor shortages, as well as to allow existing team members a day of rest to avoid burnout. There may be moments in time where our service experience, whether it be from the hours of operation side or the experience side, may not exceed your expectations. Our team asks for your patience and understanding even as costs rise. I assure you that our team will be dedicated and committed to providing you with an exceptional Member experience and if and when we miss the mark, it will certainly not be for lack of effort. Please remain in communication with me. I will work hard with our team to address these situations so that we can continue to strive towards our culture of excellence and an environment of constant and never-ending improvement.

Our Members have always provided an exceptional working environment for our team. In fact, the relationships with Members have been one of the resounding critical retention factors for team members. So, how can you help? Please continue to recognize team members when they go above and beyond. A simple thank you goes a long way into making a difference, as the service industry can be thankless at times. Send a note to the department head or to me; we will make sure to share your praise with the team member who positively impacted your experience! Finally, we ask you to always be recruiting. We have special cards made that you can obtain from our office that is an “I like your style card.” Feel free to pick up a few so that you have them to pass out to prospective employees. If you are out and about and have an exceptional experience, please refer that person to our Mirabel!

Dear Mirabel Members, September arrived in the blink of an eye! It has been an uncharacteristically busy summer for Membership sales; typically, sales and inquiries slow down during the hot months, but 2021 continues to be a year for the record books.

Since June 1, we have had eight new Members join the Mirabel family (one golf and seven social memberships). The golf membership was part of a real estate transaction which bypassed the waitlist and six of the seven social memberships went onto the waitlist. We also added two non-members to the golf waitlist. Longtime Mirabel Members, Scott & Kelly Wickam, went onto the waitlist and were able to upgrade to a Golf Membership in early June. As of September 1, we are processing the final five social memberships to close out the fiscal year. This will bring the total number of new golf Members to 41 (including 11 upgrades) and new social Members to 35.

For the second time in Mirabel’s history, both membership categories will be fully subscribed. This comes right as we approach the Club’s and Community’s 20th Anniversary; what a fantastic way to celebrate both milestones!

We have only had two resignations, since my last update. I would like to recognize Gregory & Rosemary Insolia and Gary & Debra Michelson for their many years of Membership. They are missed.

Please join me in greeting our newest Members who joined since June: John Browning & Loree Ryan John and Loree are native Idahoans. They both went to the same schools in Boise, including Boise State University. John has been involved in the community over his many years in the Real Estate business. John started his real estate career in 1973 and still today has a real estate company that specializes in residential income properties. He is very busy with land development and construction in Idaho today.

Loree has enjoyed volunteering in the Boise and Valley County communities and is excited to be involved in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area. They have a large family and are excited to introduce their children and grandchildren to all that Arizona has to offer.

They are currently members of the “River Club” in Garden City, Idaho.

They are both very much looking forward to meeting the Members at Mirabel and making new friendships.

David & Joan Crockett David & Joan reside in Inverness, IL when they are not at their Mirabel home.

Although neither of them grew up in the Chicago area, they have lived there for 45 years and consider it their home. They moved to the Chicago area soon after they were married. Dave grew up in Worcester, MA and Joan in Cleveland, OH. They had a home at Rancho La Quinta in La Quinta, CA and spent their winters there after they both retired in 2008.

Prior to retiring, Dave owned his own business representing manufacturers of air handling equipment, heat exchangers, and air pollution control equipment, where he sold to power generation utilities and other heavy industries. Joan spent 36 years with Allstate Insurance Company and finished her career as the Senior Vice President of Human Resources for the final 14 years.

Although they both enjoyed their careers, they both found retirement to be the best time of their lives. It gives them the time to pursue their interests, including golf, travel, reading, food and wine, entertaining, and of course, family.

Their move to Scottsdale was motivated by the desire to be closer to family who reside in the Phoenix area. They chose Mirabel for its warm and welcoming membership, challenging golf, and beautiful Clubhouse and Spa. As always, if you have friends or colleagues that you think would love being a Member of Mirabel and you would like me to reach out to them, please let me know.

Richard & Maureen DeGroot Richard and Maureen are both originally from Burien, Washington. They currently reside in the Leschi neighborhood of Seattle. Richard and Maureen have three children, all of whom reside in the Greater Seattle area. Their oldest, Eric, is 32 and works for Boeing Employees Credit Union, and their middle child, Emilie, is 27 and currently working on her Master’s Degree at Seattle University.

Their youngest, Hannah, age 16, is a junior at Seattle Prep High School where she is working on College Prep classes and is a Varsity Volleyball player.

Richard is a Tax CPA with CBIZ Berntson Porter in Bellevue, WA where he is a Managing Director and has almost 25 years of experience with the firm. Richard has degrees in Accounting and Law from Seattle University and also a Graduate Tax Law degree from the University of Denver. When not at the office, Richard enjoys spending time with his family and friends, traveling and doing outdoor activities such as boating, waterskiing, snow skiing, fly fishing, hiking and golf.

After 25 years in banking at Bank of America, Maureen left her position of Assistant Vice President to focus her attention on family and raising children. During these years, Maureen has remained active outside the home as a member of the St. Francis of Assisi School Commission, and Church Pastoral Council. Maureen also enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, doing outdoor activities, cooking and wine tasting.

Richard and Maureen have been spending three weeks a year in Scottsdale for over a decade and fell in love with the north Scottsdale area. They purchased Mirabel Lot #63 in December of 2020 and will start construction of their new house in October of 2021, with completion scheduled for January of 2023. After spending a lot of time reviewing various possible locations for their new house, they decided that Mirabel would be the right place for them. The updated clubhouse and facilities, along with the welcoming feeling from the staff and members at Mirabel, made them realize that Mirabel is where they want to spend their time and become engaged Members.

Scott & Nicholette Deutsch Scott was raised in a military family and lived internationally and in multiple U.S. locations during his childhood. He graduated with a BSEE from California State University, Fresno and an MBA from Cal State East Bay. Scott has worked in the technology industry for 34 years as an executive and has started several of his own companies. Scott will be mostly retired but stays busy with one of his own companies and as an advisor to multiple start-ups. Scott enjoys golfing, tennis, bicycling, and exotic sports cars.

Nicki is originally from Taylor, Michigan and prior to having children was in the dental industry. After having 3 beautiful children, Gavin (18), Annalise (16) and Piper (8), Nicki has been a full-time Mom and homemaker. Nicki is an avid bowler, enjoys tennis and is learning to play golf.

Scott and Nicki have been married for 20 years and have lived in the Bay Area of California during that time. They have had a vacation home in Cave Creek, AZ for the past 20 years and have planned to move to the area once Scott was retired. They are looking forward to living in Scottsdale full time in their new home in Mirabel. Scott and Nicki chose to buy and live in Mirabel after they visited the club and neighborhood and were immediately welcomed by the Members that they met.

Jon & Stacey Grier Jon is an award-winning recording engineer and music producer specializing in acoustic music. Originally from Montreal, Canada, he trained as a musician and then transitioned to the production end of the industry. Though semi-retired for a number of years, he still produces the occasional album and enjoys mentoring young artists. Jon is an avid golfer, loves to cook, a student of single malt whiskeys, enjoys mystery novels, and is a massive hockey fan.

Stacey was raised in St. Louis, MO and graduated with her MBA from Washington University’s Olin School of Business. Fascinated by human motivation and behavior, she has spent over 30 years in Marketing. She is currently the Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer for The Clorox Company and a bit of a workaholic.

Stacey discovered golf about 15 years ago and has loved the sport ever since, even when it tortures her. She enjoys good wine with good friends, traveling, and reading.

Jon and Stacey have been married for 20 years and have two sweet cats. They visited Mirabel and knew immediately that this was the home of their next life adventure. For now, they will be in Arizona part-time but plan to permanently relocate to Mirabel sometime in the future.

Gary Michael “Mike” & Jill Smith Mike and Jill were born and raised in southern Minnesota. They both attended Mankato State University. Mike earned his degree in Real Estate, Insurance, & Marketing.

Jill in Urban & Regional Studies and Interior Design. Mike has been a Wealth Management Advisor with Northwestern Mutual/Smith Financial Group for 31 years. Jill is the Director of Marketing and New Business for the Smith Financial Group and has been for 27 years. They have offices in Edina and Rochester, Minnesota, and split their time working between Arizona and Minnesota.

Mike and Jill have two grown sons; Stefan (Kate) who resides in Edina, MN, and Killian (Mike) who resides in Phoenix, AZ. They currently have two grandchildren: Everett (5) and Penny (2). They're passionate about hanging out with family and friends, are avid sports fans, love to golf, workout, hike, travel, and share a great bottle of Pinot Noir.

Mike and Jill have had a second home in North Scottsdale for 10+ years, but now look forward to being part of the Mirabel Community and are very excited to meet new friends and play lots of golf!

Steve & Rhanna Haynes Steve grew up in New England, migrated to California after high school, and graduated from the University of Denver in 1973. He spent 40 years in the high technology industry, primarily in Sales & Marketing, and with assignments in the Eastern US and Silicon Valley. The highlight of his career was becoming a member of a Silicon Valley startup in 1987, taking it public in 1990, and growing sales from zero to over $2B during that tenure. After retiring (finally!) in 2013, Steve has focused mainly on family (especially their two grandchildren) traveling, hiking, playing golf, smoking great cigars, and making and enjoying some great wines.

Rhanna is originally from Denver and attended Colorado State University. She and Steve met on a blind date during Steve’s time at DU. After a short-lived career in banking, and later as a travel agent, she now enjoys researching and planning their next travel adventures, with family and/or friends. Her interests include travel, hiking, gardening, bocce ball, and reading. While she is not a golfer, she is dying to try pickleball.

Steve and Rhanna have two children, Matt and Stefanie. Matt resides in Bothell, WA with his wife, Jenn, and their two children, Olivia and Chris. Stefanie resides in Littleton, CO. After a search of more than a year for a community they wanted to live in, it all came together when they visited Mirabel and the Country Club. They walked out of the Club tour, and the tour of their new home in the community, and said, “this is where we want to be.”

Gordon & Patti Kushner Gordon was born and raised in Calgary, Canada, and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1988 with a degree in Communications and from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1991 with a Juris Doctorate. After working for a large law firm in Cincinnati, Ohio, for a number of years, Gordon embarked on an inhouse legal career. Since 2004, he's served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Chief Legal Officer of ECI Software Solutions, a software company based in Dallas owned by various private equity firms. Gordon enjoys all sports, but especially golf and hockey. Having traveled internationally for his job for many years, he enjoys visiting new countries, especially those that offer wine tours.

Patti was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, and graduated from Laurentian University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. She worked for Revenue Canada as a business auditor and later as a staff accountant for Gibson's Greetings before devoting her life to raising her two children. With much more free time now, she enjoys tennis, pickleball, hiking, traveling, and wine.

Patti has family in Scottsdale, which was a primary reason for her and Gordon’s recent move from Dallas. Gordon and Patti have two children. Brantley, a former Division I college golfer at Miami (OH), lives in Chicago. Their daughter Katerina graduated from Gonzaga University and now lives in Spokane, Washington.

Gordon and Patti relocated to Scottsdale in April and plan to spend their time traveling and experiencing new things in the area. They have made some new friends and acquaintances at Mirabel and love the feeling of community, the golf course and the amenities that the club has to offer.

Matt Proch | Food & Beverage Director I cannot believe how fast this summer flew by. It feels like last week we were doing the Memorial Day Weekend activities here at the Club. Now we are getting ready for the Labor Day events, which means one thing…we are about to start the new season.

What a fun and busy summer we've had at the Club. July was packed full and the Members had a great time at each event. We started off the month with the Fourth of July Barbecue. Pastry Chef Jean Claude held a cooking class where there were some yummy treats made. The Shrimp Boil was enjoyed by many and lastly we had a Wine Tasting and Education session which we finished with a small wine dinner. In the middle of all of this, we did manage to fit in a few little golf events here and there.

August was another great month as we started it off with Sous Chef Seth and his Vegan Cooking Class. While Seth was enjoying a much-needed vacation, Maria, Rodrigo and the rest of the team did an amazing job with the Street Taco Night that packed the house. We had a fun afternoon with the Wine Tasting and Education and finished the month off with the Monsoon Golf Tournament. Friday Night Happy Hours have also packed the house and the Clubhouse has had a steady flow of Members and guests this summer, so we continue to thank you for all the support.

As we finish off the summer in September, we have a few more events that are taking place so please make sure that you sign up for them if you have not already: •

We are getting ready to start the hiring process. There are a few more spots to fill to get us ready for what we are expecting to be a busy season. We will also be hosting numerous training seminars with current team members and new team members to make sure that everyone is ready to go. The hiring market here in Arizona, as in the rest of the country, has made it very difficult to find the quality of team members that we have been able to hire in the past. Our focus is getting those that we feel are a good fit and then training them to Mirabel’s level of service. We are excited and optimistic that we will be able to find those great candidates that we need.

We would like to remind you breakfast and lunch reservations are not required, but if you would like to make one you are more than welcome to. We are asking that Members make reservations for dinner and all events that are taking place this season. We are excited to be introducing a new reservation system that will be easier for us in the back of the house and more user-friendly for you when you are making reservations for à la carte dinners and dining events.

It is hard to believe that summer is nearing its end. We are gearing up for the 2021 - 2022 season. I am pleased to announce that Dennis Yager, Mirabel Stylist, Auburn Gonzales, Manicurist, and Jennifer Mitchell, Aesthetician, will all be returning this year. Myrna, Barb, Heather, Geri, and Laura, our massage therapists, are returning as well.

To make an appointment for a massage, please call Member Services. If you are making an appointment for someone other than yourself, we need to know: time preferred, how long (60 or 90 minutes), pressure, and what type of massage.

Jimena will be returning to the Ladies’ Locker room. If you need anything, please give her a call or go up and visit with her. Jimena is in the process of going through Member name tags. If you still have yours, please drop it off at the front desk.

We are currently working on Welcome Back Spa & Salon specials for October.

Starting in October, Goodeye Car Wash company will be returning every Friday. Please try to make a reservation in advance. Juan determines how much help to bring according to the reservations we have. Please stop by and see or give me a call if you are interested.

A few things to keep in mind: We will have four Fearless Painting classes this season, three Cork & Canvas events, two Succulent classes, and something new. Lisa will be teaching a homemade organic dog treats with garden herbs class.

This class will feature two recipes: a non-baked treat and a make and bake at home. The date for this class is TBD. This month I would like to answer some frequently asked questions about five different types of fitness offered at Mirabel: Personal Training, Aqua Fitness, Pilates, Aerial Yoga, and the Mirabel Hiking Club.

How does Mirabel Fitness personalize my Personal Training experience?

All new personal training clients receive a functional assessment to provide a baseline of flexibility, balance, strength and mobility. This assessment also includes a discussion regarding current or past injuries and goals. Our experienced trainers will then personalize your training based on the information they have received.

How do I schedule a Personal Training session?

Initially, you can contact Jenny Hill, our Mirabel Fitness and Wellness Director, to discuss your needs and interests.

She will connect you with a Personal Trainer that specializes in your area, or you can talk to a Personal Trainer you would like to work with. Once a connection has been made, you and your trainer will come together to plan personal training sessions based on your schedules and availability.

What areas does Mirabel Personal Training cover?

Our Personal Trainers will work with clients, in a small group setting or one-on-one, on their fitness goals, which includes improving a clients muscular endurance, strengthening a client's cardiovascular capabilities, increasing flexibility, balance, rotation, golf performance, therapeutic exercises, pre- and post operation. Stretching sessions are also available as well as private yoga, aerial, and Pilates.

What are the benefits of AquaFitness?

Water lifts gravity, forcing weight down on your body and reduces impact on joints by 85%. The low-impact nature of water exercise makes it a great activity for anyone recovering from injury or operation, or suffering from chronic joint conditions such as sclerosis or arthritis. Water is denser than air, which will provide a natural resistance as you move, which builds muscle and increases flexibility. Additionally, water exercise improves blood circulation. Just from being in the water, our bodies start to warm up to keep internal body temperatures; this will cause blood to circulate faster, and the heart to work better. These features combined will allow you to do more exercise with less pain, and this will translate to better results.

How many calories do you burn in one class of AquaFitness?

On average, we burn 300 calories in one hour of Mirabel’s Aqua Aerobics class, utilizing shallow water cardio intervals and deep water core strengthening. It also depends on individual efforts and goals.

Is the water warm?

Yes. The water is heated to temperatures in the mid-80’s. In water any warmer than this, the body struggles to stay cool while exercising. In the summer months, water might be warmer due to the weather. In the winter months, the pool is heated to 82° F. Will I have to swim and put my head underwater?

All of our pool exercises keep your head above water. We do exercises on the shallow end of the pool with water at chest height. We also utilize pool equipment, such as belts, noodles, and water dumbbells to assist with buoyancy.

I don't really want people to see me in a bathing suit, so what do I wear?

We must abide by the pool rules, which do require a bathing suit. However, you do have the option to wear other clothing over your suit, such as a polyester shirt and/or leggings, rash-guards, surfer suits, etc. Water shoes are recommended.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is done using the Pilates reformer machine. It is generally more intense and dynamic than matbased Pilates as it adds resistance to the Pilates exercises via the use of the spring-loaded tension. Reformer Pilates can be used as a sport-specific cross-training tool.

Who can do Reformer Pilates and what are the benefits?

Anyone can do Reformer Pilates. All ages, genders, and fitness levels will benefit from this total body exercise. Reformer Pilates recruits every muscle fiber in the body, leading to a stronger core. It helps with joint stability and balance, and strengthens the abdominals, glutes and hamstrings. These muscles support the spine and lengthen the hip flexors, which increase flexibility and improve posture.

How do I get started with Reformer Pilates?

We currently have two certified Reformer Pilates trainers and offer private one-on-one or private duo training sessions. Contact Jenny Hill to get connected with Pilates trainers.

What is the maximum weight limit for Aerial Yoga?

The max load here at Mirabel is 750 pounds. Due to dynamic movement in aerial yoga, it is not recommended that students over 300 pounds attend aerial classes.

What should I wear?

Wear form-fitting, yet breathable clothing. Wear bottoms that completely cover your thighs and tops that completely cover your mid-back. Absolutely no jewelry is permitted in Aerial Yoga, which includes watches, wedding rings, and stud earrings.

What is the age limit for Aerial Yoga?

There is none. Aerial Yoga is great for people of all ages and genders. All you need is a good attitude.

Do I need to be flexible for Aerial Yoga?

NO. Aerial yoga will help with your flexibility, strength, and coordination. The swing makes it easier to move through a variety of postures you might not be able to do in regular mat-based yoga Aerial Yoga Myths Busted by Kassi You’ll need to cut me out of that thing.

After six years of teaching Aerial Yoga and Aerial Arts, I have NEVER cut a single person out of the swing. We will work on basic moves that do not constrain your body.

I need to work on my upper body strength before I come to Aerial Yoga.

NO. Aerial Yoga is where you work on your upper body strength. The best day to start is TODAY. I don’t know what I’m doing; it’s probably not for me.

No one gets left behind. Aerial Yoga is not about joining the circus. We will take you through each posture step by step, so you know exactly what, how, and when to do things.

What type of hikes are offered and when?

Hikes will run from October 2021 through April 2022. The moderate hikes will be the 2nd Monday of each month and the intermediate hikes will be the 4th Monday of each month. Moderate hikes will be 2.0-2.5 hours in duration with level or rolling terrain; and intermediate hikes will be 3.0-3.5 hours in duration with elevation gain. All hikes are out in the desert with little or no shade.

How do I register for a hike?

Click on the flyer or go to the Mirabel Calendar and click on the specific Monday hike link. Registration is capped at 20 hikers. Registration is limited to two hikers per sign-up and is open only to Members/dependents listed in the Mirabel system. If all spots are filled, check back later to see if a spot has opened up.

What type of gear do I need?

Everyone is looking forward to the upcoming season at Mirabel and the myriad of activities available to Members, including car fun. We will be organizing monthly lunch runs to various locations around the Scottsdale area where we can enjoy lunch and share stories with fellow car enthusiasts. In the late fall and in the early spring there will be an opportunity for an overnight excursion to a resort somewhere in the area. The lunch runs and the overnight trips are great for exploring the back roads in the area and some of the great scenery in Northern Arizona. We will send out notices for these events with details and sign up information. If you have some ideas for fun car trips, please pass them along to me.

Each month we will feature a piece on a Mirabel Member and their car with photos. The type of car is not as important as the story about the Members and their history/relationship with the car.

In March we will hold the annual Mirabel Car Show on the event lawn where Members can show off their rides and enjoy some vintage music and outstanding Mirabel cuisine. All types of vehicles are welcome and we will share more of the details closer to the time.

In January, Scottsdale becomes the vintage car capital of the world, with many auctions and shows across the Valley.

The recently concluded Monterey car week demonstrated that the vintage car market is very robust and we can expect the January auctions to be very active. In the past we have organized some groups to see the vehicles at Barrett Jackson, Goodings, RM, etc. and we will see what is available for similar outings come January.

If you find staying on the road a bit boring, we have a group of Mirabel Members who have some off-road adventures each month. We will provide contact details and additional information when the group is back up and running.

For new Members and some of the existing Members, it's important to note that if you are a Mirabel Member and have something with wheels or a picture of something with wheels, you are automatically a Member of the Mirabel Car Club!

I hope your summer has been a great one and you all are excited about kicking off our 20th Anniversary of golf at Mirabel! We have some exciting things planned for golf this season and fingers crossed we have some sense of normalcy for the entire season.

Monthly Choose Up's We will be conducting Monthly ABCD format games on the first Wednesday (men) and Thursday (ladies) of each month. Teams will be balanced by our tournament programming method as well as valuable input from Cap Patrol. If you have not downloaded the Cap Patrol app on your phone, please see the Cap Patrol write up below and download! We encourage you to participate in these monthly games to help foster competition and camaraderie throughout the Club. These events will be a monthly shotgun event beginning in November and concluding in April. Please refrain from requesting your team as requests will not be honored.

2021 Coyote Combo We have moved our premier Member-Member event to November to help kick start our season! The Ladies’ Coyote Combo will be a three day stroke play event November 10 - 12. The Men's Coyote Combo will be a double elimination match play; November 17 - 19. Every team is guaranteed to play two matches. Not all teams will play on November 19. Please sign up as a team or if you have trouble finding a partner, please let a team member know and we will try to find one for you. The one day Pilgrimage Member-Member has been replaced by the Coyote Combo.

Staghorn Lottery The Staghorn is a premier match play men's Invitational that takes place April 20 – 23, 2022 . Access to this event is by a lottery that will be conducted at 4 pm on Saturday, November 20, 2021. If you wish to play in The Staghorn, please sign up for this lottery. You do not need to be present at the lottery to gain entry into The Staghorn. This lottery will also determine wait list priority.

Handicap Committee / Cap Patrol Now that golf season is officially upon us, the Golf Committee would like to notify all Members of some changes we are making to the handicap monitoring and review process that is an important component of the overall USGA handicap system. In the interest of fair play for all our Members, the Handicap Committee may modify a player’s handicap index over and above the standard handicap calculations used in GHIN, to better reflect the players potential playing ability. The USGA allows for these handicap adjustments under section 7-1a of the “USGA Handicap System”.

In order to promote transparency and consistency in this process, the Handicap Committee will be utilizing a third-party analytical tool, Cap Patrol, to monitor all Members handicaps. This new program works by reviewing all players GHIN data and tournament performances on a continual basis and is specifically designed to accurately calculate a player’s potential and reflect that potential in the players handicap index. The Handicap Committee will review all Member handicap indexes using this system, starting on November 1, 2021. If an adjustment is necessary, the Handicap Committee will provide written notification of the handicap change to the player in order to give the player an opportunity to respond prior to the adjustment becoming effective.

The USGA Handicap Committee guidelines ask that all member clubs monitor all players at their club to ensure that a player’s handicap index is reflective of that player’s potential. The process of gathering all the

individual data of each player at the club would be extremely difficult to do efficiently considering a typical club has on average hundreds of members who play thousands of rounds throughout the year. Cap Patrol is a tool that allows a golf club to easily gather all of the data to monitor its players handicaps and scores to present to a handicap committee the background data needed to make, in those rare instances, an adjustment to a players GHIN index.

Beyond the gathering of the data, Cap Patrol runs a proprietary algorithm against the data of each player to look for indicators that may mean a player is manipulating their handicap index. Some of the more widely known indicators that Cap Patrol includes in the algorithm are things such as: 1. High and Low Index Over the last 12 months a. Important because this shows a player playing potential over a recent history. This could be an indicator of an issue if they are on the high end of their index over the last 12 months since they have shown the ability to play better recently 2. Home vs Away a. This is important because it is more difficult for a club to follow a players’ play at away courses. We look at the club to see what players of the same ability score at away courses compared to the player in question. This may indicate that a player is managing their handicap index by turning in scores outside of the norm at away courses compared to players of similar ability.

3. Potential a. We monitor a player’s scores in tournament play since a player under pressure, playing by the rules and having their score attested is one of the best indicators of their potential. We look at a player’s tournament data over the last 24 months to calculate what their potential index should be. This is one of the more highly weighted pieces of data since it is data that has been peer reviewed and played under more difficult playing conditions.

4. Rounds Turned In a. We monitor when a player plays a round of golf and if that player turns in a score for that round. This indicates if the data we are looking at is complete as well as if the player is recording his play for every opportunity. We also text the next day what a player turns in for their round score to the other players in their group they played with that day for peer review.

5. Tournament Point System a. This is based on the Knuth Point System created through research by USGA handicap senior director Dean Knuth. His system is based on awarding points for first (five points) thru fifth (one point) finishes at net events over the last two years. His research shows that anything beyond a player accumulating seven points in that period is above the norm. His system then adjusts a player’s tournament handicap for future events according to the number of points they have above seven. This is part of our system because it shows a player having success beyond what has been researched as the norm at a club no matter how they accomplished getting there. This, like tournament scores under "Potential", is a more highly weighted piece of data because it shows who is “on the podium” more than what is statistically the norm.

There are features such as “Hot Index”, “Trend”, “History”, Clutch”, and even an option called “Odds” showing you the statistical probability of shooting certain net scores. All are meant to enhance and deliver an exciting golf experience.

There is no doubt summers are always difficult in the desert and it seems that often weather is a reoccurring topic. Well, I suppose it should be. The golf course is a living, breathing entity that is dependent on the environment and its conditions.

There are aspects of the environment which we can control, but most aspects are completely out of our control.

It has been well documented this summer that we have seen a significant monsoon season with not only rain but humidity. The benefits of humidity are vital to our transition and this year we have seen a stellar transition and some of the best summer conditions in our fairways and rough. However, as I have reported, this humidity and our high temperatures take their toll on our cool season Bentgrass greens. We continue to see improvements and are out in front of the disease pressure, but the summer has definitely been challenging for our greens.

To date, we have seen 7.53" of rain since July 1. We are expecting more this week and often see significant storms in September. Mirabel historically receives approximately 6" of rain during the monsoon season, so we definitely surpassed our average with a month to go. This is a dramatic correction from our past three summers, where we saw the following: 2018 1.75", 2019 1.49", and 2020 1.14". However, it has been sustained humidity, which has been the most significant factor, both positively and negatively, this summer. Since July 1, we have only seen three days where humidity has dropped below 30 percent. Greater than 30 percent, in my opinion, seems to be the magic number for Bermudagrass development. At the same time, when one looks at the combination of high temperatures and humidity, this is where the concern with Bentgrass is heightened. There was a period of 38 days where we saw an average humidity of 58 percent! Disease models often look at temperature and humidity and add the two together. The higher the number, the more stress to the Bentgrass and the associated disease pressures.

Typically in the desert, when we see numbers >120 we start to be cautious. When these numbers are >130 there is concern. These numbers seldom exceed 150 in the desert. This summer we have already seen 18 days where Mirabel has exceeded 150; most of these occurring in continuous days.

The rains have also produced a very dangerous plant this summer. It is the Datura wrightii or sacred datura. It is a poisonous perennial plant that has hallucinogenic and psychoactive alkaloids. These can be extremely dangerous to humans and animals. So watch your pets and remove them if you see them on your property.

Overseeding is quickly approaching, so we will continue to maintain and detail the course for play, as well as making preparations for overseeding. There are a multitude of items which need to be timed and occur prior to closing. Realize much of what we do just prior to overseeding and overseeding itself sets us up for the entire season ahead. Therefore, the next six weeks are a very critical time for our operation.

The Course and Practice Facility will be closed as of September 20 for our greens aeration and fall overseeding.

FROM THE PRESIDENT GREGORY MAANUM PRESIDENT, BOARD OF DIRECTORS Dear Fellow Mirabel Members, I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful summer with family and friends.

We are getting close to what we expect to be a great upcoming season at Mirabel. We will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary this season with our Harvest Celebration planned for Saturday, November 13. This is a party you will not want to miss. We also welcome our new Chef Jon Hearnsberger, who along with his team, will be planning and preparing our cuisine for that celebration and the season to come.

We will also be able to enjoy our fully open, expanded and renovated Clubhouse along with the addition of some new amenities.

And of course, we welcome all our new golf and social Members to the Club. Mirabel now has a completely full Membership with several on the waiting list to join. I am sure we will all go out of our way to introduce ourselves to the new Members, make them feel welcome, and demonstrate what a great culture we have cultivated at Mirabel. I personally look forward to meeting all our new Members.

As optimistic and excited as the Board is for next year, we will be facing some challenges. As Marcie outlined in her Post article, finding and retaining staff will be our biggest challenge. During the pandemic and the labor fallout from that, many industries are facing staffing shortages. The hospitality industry was one that was hardest hit. That industry was forced to lay off many employees due to shutdowns caused by the pandemic. After that happened, many hospitality workers just simply left the industry. This topic has been on the agenda at every Board meeting and I think we have positioned Mirabel well to recruit and retain staff in this difficult environment. But it will be very difficult to remain fully staffed throughout the season. Marcie and her team will work hard to deliver the high quality experience we all expect at Mirabel, but we may need to make some adjustments to operations if we cannot maintain a full staff. It is just as important that we allow our existing employees to have a quality life/work balance, so we do not risk burnout and losing some of our key team members. So I ask that we all be patient and supportive as Marcie and her team navigate through this difficult labor market.

Also due to the increase in the cost of labor across the nation and rising inflation in goods and services, it has been a very challenging budget year. We are seeing meaningful cost increases across the board. Marcie and her team have done a great job of putting next year’s budget together. The Board has been meeting this summer to review and challenge the budget; we will sign off on the final budget at the September Board Meeting. Due to these cost increases and our commitment to maintaining the quality of the Mirabel Experience, we will be looking at a dues increase this year. Clubs across the country are finding it necessary to increase dues to keep pace with rising costs. Over the past two years, in total, we have only raised dues $50 per month over that period. The dues income generated is no longer sufficient to cover all these significant cost increases. Once the budget is finalized and approved, the exact amount of the dues increase will be communicated. At the annual meeting scheduled for early November, the Mirabel leadership team and the Board will share with the Membership many of the challenges we have been facing in delivering the budget for next year.

The good news is that we do not anticipate any increase to the annual capital dues contribution. With the addition of so many new members and the transfer fees generated from the sale of those memberships, the club remains debt-free and in a very strong capital position.

About 30 days prior to the annual meeting, you will all be receiving some proposed updates to the Club’s bylaws along with the ballots to elect the new Board Members. The bylaw changes are mostly updates to out-dated language or making changes that are better aligned with best practices in Club governance. So once you all receive this information, I encourage you to read it carefully and make sure you take the time to vote on the bylaw changes as well as the slate of Board nominees. I want to thank Jo Ann Redding, Ron Vance and David Scherl for all the work they did to comb through the bylaws and make sure our Club was well positioned in terms of these best practices. It was not an easy task.
