A wide range of conferences, keynotes and talks at MIPDoc will see key industry figures build a global picture of the factual industry. Here we preview some of the sessions taking place over the two-day event WORLDWIDE trends, content strategies, project funding and independent filmmaking are some of the subjects that will be explored during the MIPDoc conference programme. Delegates will hear top-level discussions on where factual is headed in the multi-platform digital age. In a session on finance, entitled Raising Funds For Resonant Storytelling, speakers will discuss a range of issues including how crowdfunding and brands might become increasingly important as competition hots-up and pressure on budgets continues to increase. One of the speakers at the session, founder and executive producer of US-based Saville Productions Rupert Maconick, countered the suggestion that brand involvement can compromise the message of a documentary. This can be overcome “by making a docu-
mentary about a brand’s needs”, for example. “A brand corporate social response might be climate change or human rights,” he said. Also speaking on the panel, Ashley Turing heads-up LiveTree ADEPT, a crowdfunding platform that connects viewers and investors with programme makers. Turing said that crowdfunding eliminates all the conditions that traditional funding can bring to a production: “The only consideration is whether the LiveTree community of consumers, creatives and investors likes the concept and would like to see it made.” The Raising Funds session also features Christoph Nagel, manager for crowdfunding company Kickstarter in Europe. In View From The Top: What Do Buyers & Commissioners Want, discussions will include acquisiMIPDOC PREVIEW •
tion trends, perspectives on spotting hit shows and strategies for programming factual content on multiple platforms. The session features the World Screen Factual Trendsetter Awards. For View From The Top panelist Christian Drobnyk, executive vice-president, National Geographic Channels, “the factual sweet spot right now is where authenticity meets originality and a boat-load of creative ambition. Contrived concepts are falling flat.” And he advised programme makers: “Make sure you have a clear point of view on how the project you’re pitching fits or could fit on the service you’re pitching and who the audience is. Being on the receiving end of someone just trying to move catalogue is painful.” On the same panel, Steve Burns, chief programming officer at 6

CuriosityStream, said his company is always on the look out for something that’s not been seen before. “If you have a topic where there is exciting new science or new insights in history, our door is always open,” he said. “But, are there new insights? Is there a unique, credible storyteller or a new innovative production technique?” US-based CuriosityStream is a global, advertising-free, subscription factual video-on-demand service, and pitches should be targeted to that model, Burns said. “There are lots of talented producers sending CuriosityStream clever proposals. Many are looking for full commissions for multipart series that would work best on commercial TV. We have done a handful of commissions and copros and another couple dozen of pre-sales, intended to be pro-

motables on our network. At this point in our evolution, we are still acquisition-based. It’s the normal course of any network. You start out with acquisitions and end up having mostly originals.” In the session, Indie Filmmaking: Protecting Creative Freedom In An M&A World, executives will consider the realities of being an independent company in the factual arena. survived in this context? Through exclusive access to great stories and the creative and technical ability to make docs look fresh and different. Plus, of course, competitive pricing to accommodate the global eyeball migration to digital media.” Jane Root, former president of Discovery Channel US, former controller of BBC2, co-founder of Wall to Wall and currently CEO of UK-based factual production company Nutopia, and Jamie Isaacs, CEO of UK-based
len Windemuth, CEO of indie Off the Fence. “A non-fiction company in today’s world has to be more than an enterprise, it has to be a movement. Broadcasters have to understand and like our vision, our strategy and our people.” While it is true that independent producers and filmmakers are the future of the documentary and factual industry, it is hard in a competitive world to get indie productions off the ground, she added. “How has the indie sector
THE MIPDOC INTERNATIONAL CO-PRODUCTION SUMMIT A NEW addition to MIPDOC, the MIPDOC International Co-Production Summit builds on the success of the European Co-Production Breakfast which was established four years ago. The Summit, supported by Watercolour Media, is a forum where top executives from around the world can share ideas with their peers and meet potential new partners. The organisers describe the event as “a must-attend event for co-production and the place where new global partnerships start”. The event will open with a
keynote speech from a key figure from the world of factual, followed by round table discussions — which will be summarised in a report that will be given to attendees following the event. Also on the agenda is a series of three-minute pitches from four independent producers who will then answer question from the audience for a further four minutes.

What makes the perfect pitch?

NHK’s Yoko Imai
MIPDoc is staging a series of matchmaking sessions designed to put programme makers in front of some of the industry’s key decision makers. We asked them for some advice MIPDOC is offering delegates the opportunity to meet with buyers and commissioners at matchmaking sessions taking place across the weekend. Acquisitions executives and broadcasters will be on hand to listen to ideas and to advise them on what works best in factual programming. Elisabeth Hagstedt is head of acquisitions and co-productions at TF1 Group pay channel Histoire. Hagstedt advises programme makers to do their research before pitching to any channel. “Remember there is huge competition for production budgets,” she said. “Think about why your project is particularly pertinent for our channel. At MIPDoc and beyond, she is looking for “original, relevant and captivating projects that stand out in the crowd”. NHK’s Yoko Imai has been working at the Japanese state broadcaster for over 20 years, in roles that include production and documentary acquisition. Programme makers pitching to NHK should know that the company is looking specifically for projects pro-
duced in 4K or 8K and preferably one-offs or mini-series, Imai said. Presentations to buyers should be “concise”, and programme ideas should have “good stories with a clear point of view“. “Try to pitch a project that fits the person who sits in front of you,” is the advice from Richard Maroko, director of channels at French channel operator, producer and distributor AB Groupe. “The perfect pitch is a project that is realistic, financially viable and with a clear angle.” Be well prepared, is the advice of Nina Tuominen, acquisitions executive at Finland’s YLE. Programme makers should be armed with “a one-page presentation with the most important facts: timetable, budget, producer, main broadcaster, other co-producers, a well-written synopsis, and a list of interviewees and locations”, and ideally, a trailer if the production has reached that stage. “I look for history, wildlife and science single docs and short series,” Tuominen said. “A perfect pitch would be a new, unknown, strong
story told in an innovative way.” “I am always looking for investigative stories,” said Axel Arno, commissioning editor for documentaries at Sweden’s SVT. “Bold films about the big issues of the moment. I really like emotional stories with a solid journalistic foundation. And I like to be surprised. The perfect pitch can happen when you least expect it — but in general it must be a good story, clearly presented and accompanied by strong visuals.” And Arno has one simple piece of advice for all factual programme makers: “Do your research. Make sure you know as much as you can about the taste and the needs of the people you are pitching to, before you sit down with them.

NEWS: WORLD PREMIERE TV SCREENING
Japan From Above
The MIPDoc World Premiere TV Screening for 2018 is Japan From Above, a co-production between NHK, Gedeon Programmes, ZDF/ARTE, and Voyage. We spoke with some of the people involved in the series

SMOKE-wreathed volcanoes, the high-rise Tokyo megalopolis, ice floes on the Sea of Okhotsk, cherry blossoms on Mount Yoshino, glistening rice paddies on the Shonai plain, emerald waters and coral reefs in Okinawa, and autumn leaves in ancient Kyoto. These are just some of the spectacular sights shot in 4K from helicopters and drones for the documentary series Japan From Above. “But this series offers more than just the kind of vistas that can only be seen from the air,” NHK director Shinji Iwata said. “The 4K images also reveal details and textures that cannot be fully appreciated with the naked eye. And they highlight human wonders in the intricate, breathtaking artistry of papermakers, potters, cooks, and other traditional Japanese craftspeople. The series brings Japan to life through a seamless experience of the majestic and the miniscule.” Shooting the entire 3,000-kilometre length of the Japanese archipelago in 4K was a huge project. The crew spent a year traveling from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south, taking countless shots in hundreds of locations. “They were under pressure to capture the greatest possible diversity of images in a limited time; they did not have the luxury of waiting for the perfect moments to shoot,” Iwata said. “Moreover, the look of scenery is greatly influenced by the light. So the crew needed flexibility, a keen eye on the weather, and an acceptance that no shot could be repeated.” The greatest enemy of drone filming is rain, according to Iwata. “Long spells of rainfall brought filming to a halt. The crew got many of their desired
NEWS: WORLD PREMIERE TV SCREENING shots during brief periods when the rain let up.” He added: “Some of Japan’s most talented aerial videographers handled the drone filming. Even in strong winds and other tough conditions, they captured outstanding shots that can now be enjoyed throughout the series.” There are many ‘from-above’ programmes in the documentary market,” said Shin Yasuda, executive producer at NHK. “Some take the viewers on an aerial journey across the continent, others combine aerial footage with visualisation of big data to reveal a nation’s communication and transport infrastructure. With Japan From Above, NHK and Gedeon embarked on a new challenge: using 4K cinematography to capture the breathtaking beauty of Japanese archipelago from the sky while, at the same time, pro-
viding the viewers with an upclose and personal experience with people that inhabit the islands. The result is a rare and intimate portrait of Japan.” “What strikes me the most is the intimacy Japanese have with their land,” Gedeon executive producer Nicholas Deschamps said. “Obviously there is great nature everywhere in the world, but what I find unique in Japan is the connection they have with it, so intimate than it gives to nature a kind of humanity. The key to respect of our planet is the look we have on it. That’s what we tried on this series. A tribute to Japanese and the value of the nature they inherited.” Marika Puiseux of Fox Network’s French factual channel Voyage, said the series aim is “to reveal a dynamic Japan that respects its millennial traditions. The footage from above in 4K reflects in an extremely detailed
way the divine beauty of Japanese landscapes.” And the right partnerships were crucial to achieving this: “We know the quality of Gedeon’s work and were aware that international collaboration with the NHK would also be a guarantee in terms of quality and meet our editorial requirements.” Marita Hubinger and Petra Boden, commissioning editors at ZDF/ARTE, described Japan From Above as “a flagship programme that echoes the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020 as the eyes of the world turn to the Japanese capital.” They added: “The collaboration with NHK is once again a trusted partnership reflecting common editorial requirements. NHK is recognised around the world for being at the forefront of shooting and broadcast technologies.”

Earth: One Amazing Day, “a true Chinese/UK collaboration”
International co-production is still the mainstay of blue-chip documentary and factual finance, but forward-thinking players are keeping their eyes — and wallets —open for new and innovative funding opportunities. Marlene Edmunds reports
O-PRODUCING with SVODs or using private-equity funding may be considered a walk on the wild side for some of the more traditional members of the factual content community. Many, however — and some of

the biggest players in the world — are watching new funding models with interest, and some are dabbling in more radical ways of bringing in money, including branding, the blockchain and crowdfunding. NHK’s explorations in UHD has put it on the cutting edge
FEATURE: FUNDING of technology and content creation. The Japanese broadcaster, known for its blue-chip factual content, still funds primarily from the inside or looks to international co-production. But Sayumi Horie, head of NHK’s global content development division, programming department, says that, with the launch of NHK’s two UHD (4K and 8K) channels in December of 2018, the technology could stimulate “a new driving force in the area of production funding”. NHK jumped into co-production with global ad-free SVOD platform CuriosityStream as a partner as early as 2015. The latest project, which will be showcased at MIPDoc, is the international version of Japan’s 2017 broadcast Samurai Castle. CuriosityStream’s contribution to the project took the form of funding and expertise, as well as distribution in the US. Says Horie: “To make it relevant to international audiences, we developed this story very closely with Steve Burns, chief programming officer of CuriosityStream.”
The co-production is a blend of ancient wisdom, next-generation technology and science. Scientists and technical experts used 3D and drone technology to find out why the stone walls of Japan’s famous Kumamoto Castle, built by samurai lord Kato Kiyomasa, withstood two 7.0 magnitude earthquakes in April 2016 while much of Kumamoto itself was damaged. NHK is also starting up production on the sequel to Life Force with NHNZ and international partners. “We are likely to rebrand the series and may have new partners as well,” Horie says. “We aim to complete this as a full 4K series, partly filmed by 8K camera, to be upgraded when relevant.” The UHD factor may, in fact, be the trigger that attracts new co-production partners to Life Force. Horie hopes the series will be built as a co-production with others interested in 4K and 8K transmission. Atlantic Productions is one of the most successful companies in the documentary busi-

ness, and a pioneer in multiplatform storytelling, and the use of visual effects, interactivity and VR. CEO Anthony Geffen believes international co-production is a strategic necessity: “Co-productions allow us to reduce costs, share risks, create something we couldn’t do on our own and guarantee global reach for programming. They allow us to offer commissioners original stories and access to worlds they wouldn’t otherwise get. Co-productions are a vital mainstay of the factual TV business.”

“Co-productions allow us to reduce costs, share risks, create something we couldn’t do on our own and guarantee global reach for programming. They are a vital mainstay of the factual TV business” As are the synergies generated by the right acquisition, if the performance of Canada’s Kew Media Group is any indication. Over the last year, Kew Media has acquired a string of entertainment companies and their libraries, including taking 100% ownership of the now rebranded Content Media, and buying London-based boutique factual distributor TCB Media Rights. Kew Media Group’s executive vice-president of sales and distribution, Jonathan Ford, who formerly held the same position at Content, says: “We are now part of

a group that includes a number of production companies working in the documentary and non-fiction space. Some of those are Canadian, which gives us access to that country’s soft money and tax-credit schemes. Being part of this larger group allows multiple synergies when partnering with these production companies to fund and develop the high-end documentaries and non-fiction series we are known for delivering. These collaborations allow us to bring not only our financing and broadcaster relationships to the table, but also our expertise in what makes an appealing international documentary, ensuring that projects go on to succeed both financially and creatively on the global stage.”

China’s Mandarin Film was a production partner on Earth: One Amazing Day, narrated by Robert Redford and released late last year. “The project is a true Chinese/UK collaboration and the first and only to be produced under the UK-China film treaty, signed by President Xi Jinping and then prime minister David Cameron in 2014,” says Mandarin Film CEO president Patrick Carr. The co-production was between BBC Earth Films and China’s Shanghai Media Group, with Mandarin as a production partner. Mandarin’s role was also to ensure that the Chinese version was of the same quality standards as the international one. Mandarin’s credits include such

blue-chip players as National Geographic and the major Chinese players, including CCTV, CICC and CITVC. “In recent years, we have also worked with corporate sponsors to partly fund projects,” Carr says. He adds that the Chinese internet platforms, including Alibaba, Youku, iQiyi and Tencent, “are aggressively hiring and funding docs, drama series and movies. We are working on a doc series right now that is likely to be funded by a UK and Chinese traditional broadcaster, two internet platforms and several brand sponsors, and we expect more projects like that.” Korea’s CJ E&M has broken on to the international stage in the

last couple of years with its drama, and is now aiming to make a similar impact in documentary and factual. Wild Korea is a traditional co-production with the UK’s Oxford Scientific Films and Austria’s Terra Mater Studios. Spencer Thomas, senior producer at CJ E&M’s Factual Studio, notes that Oxford Scientific Films has a proven track record in not only blue-chip factual production, but also working with Korean partners. Terra Mater also has “a well-deserved reputation for distributing content with amazing stories and top-notch production values”, Thomas adds. According to Thomas, Factual Studio’s business model is based on international co-productions, in which partners co-invest, co-produce and share IP. “It isn’t a one-size-fits-all model,” he adds. “We want to let our partners do what they do best, and the IP share is determined by each partner’s contribution to the project.” Meanwhile, Factual Studio is also paying close attention to other possible funding models. “Branded content is an area we are particularly interested in exploring further,” Thomas says. In fact, branding is probably at the top of the game when it comes to alternate ways of funding documentaries — and no one knows that better than Rupert Maconick, founder and executive producer of Saville Productions. Maconick believes
FEATURE: FUNDING that every brand can create a story universe and that those stories work better than traditional advertising campaigns in terms of getting the message across. Saville has proved this point with a number of documentaries that have helped to boost brands. In January, the company signed Oscar-nominated director Dan Krauss (The Kill Team) for US branded content representation. The company’s line-up of talent in its branded documentaries includes such high-profile filmmaking talent as Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man) and Paul Haggis (Crash). In 2016, the Werner Herzog documentary Lo And Behold: Reveries Of The Connected World, produced by Saville for tech brand NetScout Systems, was picked up at the Sundance Film Festival by Magnolia Pic-
