I wrote the analysis of poetry and piece of play in Foundations and Analysis of Literary Works Course and Drama Course as examples of English writing work and analyzing skill showing through these masterpieces.

After reading Martin Luther King’s speech, “I Have a Dream”, the distinctive literary devices in the speech are symbolism and allusion. In addition, the main idea of this speech is ‘equality is the possession for everyone.’ The devices help to make the main idea strong in terms that the symbolism can emphasize the equality; for example, the word valley and hill and mountain in “… every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low...” (King, 1963, para. 24). The valley symbolizes to underprivileged people or Black people which King wants them to be exalted or seen them as important as others, and hill and mountain symbolize ordinary people or White people who should be low or not be valued as the better group. This symbolism which King used shows that equality can be happened through treating everybody equally. Next, when focusing on the allusion, there is an example emphasizing the main idea. As stated by King (1963), “… one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ ” (para. 17). It is from the United States Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson in 1776 which King used to show that he extremely believed in the day that all human beings are equal. In conclusion, we may see that King used the symbolism and allusion to stress his intention that equality is for everyone.

The theme of this haiku is to be hopeful in a hardship situation. This can be explained that in the dark night, people cannot see the light which represents hope in the hopeless situations, but if they can see the small light or be hopeful in their difficulties, they can fight against it with only this little hope. The figurative devices using in this haiku are symbolism, alliteration, assonance, oxymoron, and simile. At first, the symbolisms are light or sun, which represents the hope, and dark night, which is the hard times. These two things make the readers see the clear image by seeing the hope in difficult times like seeing the light at night. Next, alliteration in line 1, ‘light’ and ‘lost’ emphasizes the seeing of hope with the word ‘light’ even in the loss of it in some conditions with the word ‘lost’. Moreover, assonance also emphasizes the theme in line 2 – ‘night’ and ‘light’ and in line 3 –‘shines’, ‘bright’, and ‘like’. In line 2, these two words contrast the idea of hopeless like in the night time and hopeful with the light. In line 3, these three words represent the hopeful part of life that will shine bright like the sun even darkness is predominating. The next important element is oxymoron which is the word ‘dark light’. This word illustrates the little hope with the dark light or little light at night. The last one is simile in line 2 and 3 which is ‘dark light shines bright like the sun.’ This shows that only seeing little hope in the bad situation, it can grow the larger hope within people’s mind. All in all, the figurative devices affect the theme by encouraging people to be faithful and hopeful in their difficulty.
“A DOLL’S HOUSE” BY HENRIK IBSEN ANALYZING Drama Course
Henrik Ibsen conveyed the reality of the society in the late 19th century through “A Doll’s House” as a realistic drama excellently. In the realistic drama, it generally consists of three major elements which are setting, characters, and conflict. Focusing only on characters in this play, the characters can create the picture of real-life people that can happen to be true in the Victorian era. Therefore, the audience can feel relate to each character with their life easily. Additionally, looking deeply into Torvald character, the antagonist of the play, we can see that Torvald represents keeping the reputation and being the controller of his wife in that period emphasizing how people can see “A Doll’s House” in a realistic way in the Victorian era and in a different way in the present time.

Firstly, talking about caring for the job and fame, Torvald is the main character who was full of social expectation in the Victorian era in terms of a hardworking person in a leadership position. Also, he was very proud of himself in his profession as a bank manager because it made him respectable.
As we can see in act 2, Helmer said that “...Your father’s reputation as a public official was not above suspicion. Mine is, and I hope it will continue to be so, as long as I hold my office” (27). He tried to keep his good reputation and cared about his reputation at work not wanting anything to ruin it. Even though Nora, his wife, tried to beg him to reconsider the dismissal of Krogstad, Nora’s creditor and Torvald’s employee, he told her that “...it impossible to keep him...Is it to get about now that the new manager has changed his mind at his wife’s bidding...Do you suppose I am going to make myself ridiculous before my whole staff” (27). It is because he cared about what others would think about him more than what his wife asked. Emphasizing the reason that he decided not to change his mind is that at that time, men who are in the leader position would get the reputation and respect from others, so they want to keep their reputation as long as possible. This point can reflect the real life of the man in the Victorian era that the society framed them to keep social status and the reputation.

Furthermore, Victorian men have the authority over their wives. This is one of the men’s roles in the Victorian era that makes Torvald be a dictatorial husband treating women in an inferior way. In this play, we always see Torvald used the pet name calling Nora like “My little skylark” or “My little squirrel” --showing his superiority to Nora. Torvald acts like he is in the highest position in the family because a man is considered as a strong person, so he has the duty to protect and take care of his family and take control of everything.
Fn addition, Torvald also chose the way she had to look like, which could not be decided freely by herself, from act 3 mentioned that “Torvald wants me to go as a Neapolitan fisher-girl, and dance the Tarantella that I learned at Capri...Yes, Torvald wants me to. Look, here is the dress; Torvald had it made for me there...” (23). These can show that everything in Nora’s life is controlled by Torvald as the husband and the head of the family showing the truth of Victorian culture for a man that he had to be the controller of his wife.
Moreover, Torvald used his absolute right to control his wife. For example, even little thing like eating macaroon, he also took control of Nora’s life by prohibiting her to eat it as Dr.Rank said, “What, macaroons? I thought they were forbidden here...You couldn’t know that Torvald had forbidden them” (13).
astly, we can compare these situations which were in the Victorian era with today’s society. In the Victorian era, Torvald presents the role of a man that he had to be in a good position at work for a good reputation and be in charge of the work and family. Similarly, men in the present time still care about being the leader and reputation.

However, in the aspect of being a controller, men are considered just the stronger people than women but can be only the protectors not the controller of women. Moreover, men do not have the absolute right to control women anymore because people consider more about equality. Women have more opportunities to work and decide what their lives should be without permission from men. Therefore, men are not the only one who has to work hard to take care of their family, but women can also be the head of the family. In sum, “A Doll’s House” reflects the truth of men’s role in the Victorian era in a realistic way happening through Torvald character that men had to be in good position at work, maintain their reputation, and supervising women. Nevertheless, using power to control wives or women was not real anymore in nowadays society. Hence, learning about life in any periods through the play is one way to learn about ourselves and others fairly well.

I did my internship as an online content creator of Cloud and Ground company or known as ‘The Cloud’, an online content website.

The activity doing during studying throughout four years as being the undergraduate students was being the editor and editor-in-chief for MFU Literary Magazine online, togehter with being an co-admin of the page of the same name under the facalty of Liberal Arts, English major.

I was an editor-in-chief for volumn 5 in 2020. My responsibility was recruiting the team, holding the meeting, coordinate with teacher, facilitate the author and editor, revising their work, and overview the magazine till publishing.
