CHANGE OF COMMAND CEREMONIES BRING NEW LEADERS TO MINOT AIR FORCE BASE Minot Air Force Base saw new leadership take the helm of both its wings in July, as the 5th Bomb Wing and the 91st Missile Wing each held change of command ceremonies.

Chapman previously served as deputy commander of 20th Air Force at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming, after serving as deputy commander of the 91st Missile Wing at Minot.

Col. John Burrell assumed command of the 5th Bomb Wing from Col. Jesse Lamarand on July 9.

“To the men and women of the 91st Missile Wing, my fellow Roughriders, thank you,” Schlabach said. “It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as your commander.”

During his tenure, Lamarand led more than 6,000 Airmen through over 1,800 missions and 10,400-plus flight hours while safeguarding a $5.4 billion nuclear weapon stockpile. "It's been the most proud I've been of any accomplishment," Lamarand said. "It's been an honor to serve with the Airmen of Minot Air Force Base, their families, and this local community, so thank you, thank you, thank you."

Burrell previously commanded the 5th Operations Group at Minot. "I came here as a first lieutenant in 2006, then later returned as a squadron commander," he said. "And now I get to do this again. I would not want to lead anywhere else."

On July 8, Col. George Chapman assumed command of the 91st Missile Wing from Col. Jimmy Schlabach.

“Freedom requires constant uncompromising vigilance,” Chapman said. “There is no mission more critical to the defense of our nation and our allies and there’s no team I would rather lead into this next chapter than this team.”

The Minot Area Chamber EDC extends its sincere gratitude to Col. Lamarand and Col. Schlabach for their dedicated leadership and service to the 5th Bomb Wing, the 91st Missile Wing, and our community. We wish Jesse continued success in his next assignment, and we wish Jimmy all the best in his retirement. To Col. Burrell and Col. Chapman: welcome to the Magic City!

The Minot Area Chamber EDC helped set the stage for the 2026 North Dakota State Fair with its traditional ribbon cutting the day before the nine-day event began. MACEDC Ambassadors joined fair leaders to celebrate the opening and highlight the Freedom Truck, a mobile museum traveling across the country in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary. The exhibit brought an added sense of history and celebration to the start of one of Minot’s signature summer events.

BREAKFAST BEFORE THE BARNS GET BUSY

Early mornings are nothing new for the youth who spend months preparing to exhibit livestock at the North Dakota State Fair. On Tuesday, July 21, members of the MACEDC Agribusiness Committee arrived at the livestock barn at 7 a.m. with 25 dozen donuts, juice, milk, and coffee for exhibitors and their families. The breakfast has been a committee tradition for more than 30 years. Over that time, members have watched young exhibitors grow up and return to the fair with children of their own. The family tradition is a vital part of the fair with agriculture the main focus of the nine-day event.

A FAIR DAY DEDICATED TO SERVICE MACEDC was also proud to support Military Appreciation Day on July 21, which welcomed service members, veterans, and military families for a day of recognition and fun at the fairgrounds. Guests received discounted admission and carnival rides, along with a free picnic hosted by North Dakota Beef Producers. Military members and families also received free admission to the Niko Moon concert on Wednesday, July 21. The strong turnout made for a meaningful day of gratitude for those who serve.

and supporters for the university’s luau at the fair.

The fair brought together members of the MACEDC, Visit Minot, and North Dakota State Fair boards for a joint meeting focused on collaboration. The gathering gave leaders from each organization an opportunity to exchange perspectives and discuss how they can continue supporting one another. With the fair serving as an important driver of tourism and visibility for the Minot area, the conversation reinforced the value of strong partnerships among the organizations working to support Minot.

From the opening ribbon cutting to early mornings in the livestock barn, the North Dakota State Fair once again provided meaningful opportunities for MACEDC to strengthen partnerships and connect with the community.

CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE FAIRGROUNDS MACEDC team members found several other ways to engage with community partners throughout the week. Economic Development Specialist Mark Lyman visited with North Dakota Department of Agriculture staff during the Pride of Dakota event, where the state team grilled more than 1,000 Cloverdale hot dogs and offered a reduced-price lunch to showcase North Dakota products.

MACEDC LEADERS LEARN THE ROPES FROM 4-H YOUTH AT SHOWMANSHIP EVENT MACEDC leaders stepped out of their comfort zone and into the show ring during the North Dakota 4-H Public Leaders Showmanship Event at the North Dakota State Fair. Board Chair Jarid Lundeen, Board Member and Minot Mayor Mark Jantzer, and Economic Development Specialist Mark Lyman were among 24 local, state, and military leaders invited to participate.

Each leader was paired with an accomplished 4-H youth, who provided a crash course in livestock showing before the adults put their new skills to the test. Lundeen, Jantzer, and Lyman enjoyed learning from the young showmen, gaining a closer look at the preparation, patience, and knowledge required in the show ring. Congratulations to Lyman, who won his category.

The event offered a memorable way to close out the North Dakota State Fair while connecting today’s community leaders with the next generation.

MACEDC is grateful to North Dakota 4-H for the invitation and for the work it does to develop confident, capable young leaders across the state.

A MOUNTAIN OF POTENTIAL HOW DECADES-OLD IRON STOCKPILES IN MINNESOTA ARE POISED TO FUEL MINOT’S NEXT BIG INDUSTRY One of the most significant industrial developments on Minot’s horizon begins more than hundreds of miles to our east, with mountainous piles of iron ore that have lain dormant in northeast Minnesota for decades.

North American Iron plans to reclaim that stockpiled ore, transport it directly by rail, and use it to produce merchant pig iron at a new facility in northeast Minot. With full permitting expected before the end of 2026 and financing making progress, the company plans to break ground in 2027 and begin production in late 2029 – creating hundreds of skilled jobs and generating significant economic output each year in the Minot area.

The story of that future industry, however, begins with the history of Minnesota’s Iron Range.

For much of the 20th century, the Hill Annex Mine near Calumet, Minnesota, was one of the nation’s most productive iron mines. It opened in 1913 and, at its peak, ranked as the sixth-largest producer of iron ore in Minnesota. Iron mined from the region supplied the steel that supported American industry and, eventually, the Allied war effort during World War II. Mining practices changed during the 1950s and ‘60s, and the industry shifted away from the type of ore found at Hill Annex and other mines like it. By the 1970s, iron ore mining there had largely stopped, and Hill Annex shut down in 1978.

What remained were massive stockpiles of legacy iron ore stacked hundreds of feet high and multiple city blocks long, spread across roughly 20 square miles

around Calumet. For decades, those piles sat where mining crews had left them – waiting, as it turned out, for a plan that would connect Minnesota’s past to Minot’s future.

— That plan would eventually come from Jim Bougalis, who grew up on the Iron Range and spent much of his career around those piles.

“My parents were civil contractors,” Bougalis recalled while standing atop one of the stockpiles near Calumet. “I started at a very early age – 11 years old, I think it was. I purchased the company from my father when I was in my mid-20s. I would use this,” he said, pointing to the ore underfoot. “I would dig into it with the loader, pick it up and build a road with it.”

The size and history of the stockpiles continued to fascinate him.

“I spent the last 25 years or so identifying these piles, categorizing them, backing them up to the original records, finding out that they were actually iron, matching these records,” he said. “These piles were put there for the purpose of someone taking them again. And here we are today.”

Bougalis said the idea for North American Iron began to take shape when federal tariffs and major new investments reshaped the domestic steel industry.

Following the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum in 2018, he watched the industry invest nearly $30 billion in new domestic production without a matching increase in the supply of merchant pig iron.

That vulnerability became more apparent in 2022, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted a major source of U.S. pig iron imports.

content required to make high-quality steel. Today, 100 percent of pig iron used domestically is imported, with no U.S. company currently producing it at commercial scale.

“What makes that worse now is that today, we’re buying 75 percent of our iron from Brazil – one country,” Bougalis said. “What happens when something happens in Brazil? We lose 75 percent of our iron.”

That dependence has implications that extend beyond the commercial steel market.

“We can’t build our tanks, we can’t build our missiles, whatever we need for the military – we need the iron resource to build it,” Bougalis said. “Otherwise, we’re asking our adversaries for the steel.”

Pig iron is an essential ingredient for the modern steelmaking process, providing the purity and carbon

North American Iron’s model is designed to help close that gap using a resource the country already has. Its sister company, Calumet Reclamation Company, plans to reclaim the legacy stockpiles at Hill Annex in Minnesota and ship the material by rail to Minot for production.

“Most mining operations go in this order: resources, then reclamation,” Bougalis said. “Our operation is backwards. We’re reclaiming the piles, turning mountains into hills – and extracting the resource from them.” The project is expected to eventually free more than 1,000 acres of Minnesota land for other uses once the reclamation work is complete.

operate the Minot Industrial Pipeline, a direct 90-mile line from Tioga to Minot with enough capacity to power a separate, off-the-grid power plant for North American Iron’s needs.

In addition to those economic factors, Bougalis said the character of the Magic City aligned with that of his organization.

— With a source of ore identified, North American Iron needed a place to build. Bougalis said the company evaluated sites across the country before narrowing its focus to North Dakota and, ultimately, a 2,400-acre site in northeast Minot.

“We really narrowed it down to North Dakota for two major reasons,” he said. “One is the proximity to the ore. It’s a direct ship by rail from our site in Calumet right to Minot. But the other reason, and the real important one, is the price of energy.”

That advantage traces back to the natural gas produced alongside Bakken oil in western North Dakota. When pipeline capacity or access to markets is limited, some of that associated gas is flared rather than put to productive use. North American Iron has an agreement with WBI Energy, which will build and

The project has received significant support from the state as its plans have advanced. North American Iron was awarded a $7 million grant from the North Dakota Clean Sustainable Energy Authority, and the North Dakota Development Fund made a $3 million equity investment in the project. The company also announced additional financing in July, strengthening its ability to move the facility toward construction.

The permitting process has also reached an important stage.

“We’re at the point now we’ll be fully permitted for our project this fall in 2026,” Bougalis said. “We hope to break ground in 2027 and be in production by 2029.”

before peaking during the project’s second year, when the workforce on site is projected to reach between 3,000 and 4,000 people.

Once built, North American Iron projects that the plant will support roughly 650 permanent positions. Bougalis said those jobs will look quite different from the laborintensive work historically associated with iron production.

“The ironmaking of today is a bit different than what you think about shoveling coal,” he said. “It’s all robotics near the furnaces. These are all higher-end jobs.”

The company is already considering where to find that workforce; for example, Bougalis believes there will be opportunities for service members transitioning out of Minot Air Force Base and graduates of engineering programs across the North Dakota University System.

North American Iron’s approach to manufacturing pig iron differs sharply from the coal-fired blast furnaces many people picture when they hear the words “iron plant.”

“A blast furnace is like a big pot,” Bougalis said. “You pour coal in one side, and you pour iron ore in the other, and you melt it into molten iron, and all the emissions come out of the top of the pot.”

In contrast, the Minot facility is designed around a hydrogen-powered process.

“Our project is more like a microwave oven,” he said.

“It’s a closed batch. It uses hydrogen rather than coal as the reductant. And it only heats to 700 degrees, so it doesn't combust.”

The company projects that the hydrogen-based process will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 60 percent compared to a traditional blast furnace. Plans for the facility also include onsite carbon capture and sequestration capabilities.

system rather than its fresh water supply, utilizing about 4 million gallons of wastewater per day that would otherwise move out of the city’s lagoon system and into the Mouse River. And as for noise: outside of the sound of loading and unloading railcars, the bulk of the production process will occur inside enclosed buildings.

Bougalis emphasized that the technologies behind the project have already been used successfully elsewhere.

“The hydrogen reactors like we’ll use in Minot have been in production since 1957,” he said. “We’re using the same engineers that have done this over and over again. Nothing here is left up in the air. Everything in our project is using a proven process.”

While the individual processes may be established, bringing them together in Minot is expected to create something entirely new for the region: a large-scale industrial operation connecting Minnesota’s mining history, North Dakota’s energy resources, and the growing national demand for a domestic iron supply.

A preliminary assessment estimates that the completed facility will generate approximately $1.1 billion in annual economic output, supporting new high-quality jobs, increasing demand for local businesses, and diversifying the region’s economy.

“North American Iron is poised to be a generational, transformational project for our community,” said Jarid Lundeen, 2026 Board Chair of the Minot Area Chamber EDC. “We’re thrilled that their team recognized Minot’s potential when they were considering where to build their pig iron manufacturing facility. Our location, our energy capacity, and our people make us special, and we’re eager to see this project take shape in the coming years.”

North Dakota has been recognized as the No. 4 state in the country by U.S. News & World Report, moving up significantly from its No. 12 ranking in 2025. The 2026 Best States rankings evaluate all 50 states across a wide range of categories, including health care, education, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment.

“North Dakota’s continued success reflects the hard work, resilience, and forward-looking spirit of people across our state,” said Gov. Kelly Armstrong. “We remain committed to strengthening our communities, expanding opportunities, and supporting long-term prosperity for all North Dakotans.”

In addition to its No. 4 overall ranking, North Dakota earned top tier positions across several key categories: No. 2 in Employment No. 3 in Fiscal Stability No. 5 in Energy No. 7 in Infrastructure No. 7 in Opportunity

U.S. News’ Best States rankings draw upon 71 metrics and thousands of data points to measure how well U.S. states are performing for their citizens. In addition to healthcare and education, the metrics take into account economic growth; roads, bridges, internet access, and other infrastructure; public safety; fiscal stability of state government; and overall opportunity afforded to residents. More weight was given to certain metric categories based on surveys of what matters most to residents.

BREKKA KRAMER SELECTED FOR MSU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION’S 2026 GOLDEN AWARD Minot Area Chamber EDC President | CEO Brekka Kramer has been selected as one of four recipients for the 2026 Golden Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Minot State University Alumni Association.

A lifelong Minot resident and 1998 MSU graduate, Brekka comes from a family with deep ties to the university. Her parents are MSU alumni, and as a child, she spent countless hours on campus visiting family members who worked there. Brekka also serves on the MSU Board of Regents, including a term as chair from 2024-26.

“Minot State has been part of my family’s story for generations, so this recognition is especially meaningful to me,” Brekka said. “I am thankful for the education and relationships that helped shape my path, and for the opportunity to spend my career giving back to the community I am proud to call home. I share this honor with the family, friends, mentors, colleagues, and community partners who have supported me along the way.”

Golden Award recipients are selected for outstanding service to the university, its alumni association, or their community, as well as distinguished leadership in their careers or communities. The MSU Alumni Association will honor the 2026 class at its annual awards dinner Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. in the Minot State Student Center Conference Center.

RETHINKING DENTISTRY WITH DR. LINDELL KEMMET Minot area business professionals and community members gathered for another engaging morning at July's Start Up Minot Networking Event featuring Dr. Lindell Kemmet, owner of Kemmet Dental Design.

Dr. Kemmet shared his journey from starting his career with the Indian Health Service to founding Kemmet Dental Design, a practice built around solving complex problems rather than just fixing what's broken. Attendees heard how his focus moved beyond traditional dentistry into airway health, sleepdisordered breathing, and growth and development in children.

Dr. Kemmet spoke candidly about the realities of expanding a dental practice into new territory, including educating longtime patients on integrative care and navigating skepticism. He also engaged with attendees during a Q&A session, fielding questions on tongue ties, sleep apnea, and how families can start those conversations with their own dentist.

We thank Dr. Kemmet for sharing his story, and to everyone who helped make another Start Up Minot morning a success!

The 91st Missile Wing operates 150 Minuteman III ICBM silos across an 8,500-square-mile complex spanning eight counties and dozens of communities. As the Air Force prepares to modernize that system, the physical and logistical demands on the surrounding region are expected to grow.

The Minot Air Force Base Compatible Use Study is examining how military operations, land use, and community development intersect across the region.

The study, led by the City of Minot, Minot Air Force Base, the Minot Area Chamber EDC, and other regional stakeholders, will identify potential challenges and

develop strategies that support military readiness while protecting the needs and interests of nearby communities.

Public input is an important part of that work.

Residents are encouraged to share their experiences, priorities and concerns through a 21-question community questionnaire. Participants can also place comments on an interactive map or contact the project team directly.

MINOT AREA CHAMBER EDC SHARES MID-YEAR REPORT WITH CITY AND COUNTY PARTNERS The City of Minot and Ward County are key collaborative partners in the Minot Area Chamber EDC’s mission to advocate for and invest in business activity by being a collaborative partner in the community, focused on improving quality of life for all.

In July, President | CEO Brekka Kramer shared updates on MACEDC’s work during the first half of 2026 with the Ward County Commission and the Minot City Council.

The presentations offered an opportunity to review progress, answer questions, highlight ongoing initiatives, and reinforce the importance of working together to strengthen the Minot area economy.

CITY COUNCIL APPROVES MAGIC FUND INVESTMENTS FOR MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY, SOURIS BASIN PLANNING COUNCIL At their July 6 meeting, the Minot City Council approved two MAGIC Fund requests: a $500,000 investment in Minot State University's new Innovation Engineering program, and a $250,000 investment in the Souris Basin Planning Council's Business Accelerator Fund.

The MSU funding will support equipment and student scholarships for the new program, which is designed to build a pipeline of engineering talent for employers in Minot and western North Dakota. The investment also positions MSU to draw an additional $250,000 from the North Dakota Higher Education Challenge Grant Fund.

The SBPC investment adds to the Business Accelerator Fund, which provides local match dollars for the Bank of North Dakota's PACE and Flex PACE loan programs. Since 2019, the fund has backed 81 loans, with 97% of those projects located in Minot.

The MAGIC Fund is a local economic development financial incentive funded by a 1% sales tax, managed through the City of Minot. To-date, the MAGIC fund has assisted more than 200 projects with more than $33 million in funding. Continued investment in initiatives like MSU’s Innovation Engineering program and SBPC’s Business Accelerator Fund strengthens Minot's ability to grow jobs and industry from within.

STUDY HIGHLIGHTS AVIATION’S IMPACT ON NORTH DAKOTA COMMUNITY INVITED TO PRESENTATION BY AERONAUTICS COMMISSION The North Dakota Aeronautics Commission invites the Minot community to get an in-depth look at the significant impact that aviation has on our state.

The group will present the findings of the recently completed North Dakota State Aviation System Plan and Aviation Economic Impact Study at open presentations across the state in August. The meeting in Minot is set for Tuesday, August 25 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Minot City Council Chambers (10 3rd Ave SW).

According to the report, North Dakota’s aerospace industry is soaring, generating approximately $3.6 billion in annual economic impact from the state’s 89 public-use airports and off-airport aviation and aerospace operations. The study also says the industry supports more than 28,000 jobs.

MINOT EIGHTH GRADER WINS 2026 NATIONAL CIVICS BEE® NORTH DAKOTA STATE FINALS An Our Redeemer’s Christian School eighth grader will advance to the National Civics Bee® Championship in Washington, D.C. after winning the North Dakota State Finals at the North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck.

Chilaka Ugobe, who also won the National Civics Bee Regional Competition hosted by the Minot Area Chamber EDC in April, earned the top spot after completing two rounds of civicsbased questions and a live Q&A round.

“It feels nervously exciting to represent North Dakota; what a privilege to have this opportunity,” said Chilaka. “I’m proud to engage in civics and hope others are investing time for the betterment of their community.” The focus of his essay and presentation was on access to adult mental health services.

Two seventh graders from Central Middle School in Minot finished the top three: Emily Grotte and Elsa Brown came in second and third, respectively. Each finalist received cash prizes, with $1,000 awarded to Chilaka as the first-place winner.

As North Dakota’s champion, Chilaka will participate in the National Civics Bee Championship in Washington, D.C. Prizes at the national competition include a $100,000 529 college savings plan for first place, $25,000 for second, and $15,000 for third.

“Strong communities and strong economies both depend on engaged citizens who understand how government works and how they can make a difference. At a time when civic knowledge is declining across the country, programs like the National Civics Bee help equip the next generation with the skills, confidence, and sense of responsibility needed to lead. Today’s finalists demonstrated that North Dakota’s future is in capable hands, and we’re proud to celebrate their commitment to strengthening their communities,” said Arik Spencer, President and CEO of the Greater North Dakota Chamber.

“Congratulations to Chilaka, and to all five Minot-area students who made it to the State Finals,” said Minot Area Chamber EDC Board Chair Jarid Lundeen, who served on the panel of judges in April’s Regional Competition.

“We're proud of them, and proud that Minot puts this kind of emphasis on civics. It's exactly the kind of investment that pays off for a community long-term.”

EMPLOYERS AND WORKFORCE PROFESSIONALS INVITED TO NORTH DAKOTA GLOBAL TALENT SUMMIT The North Dakota Department of Commerce has opened registration for the 2026 Global Talent Summit, bringing together employers, workforce professionals, educators, community leaders and government partners to explore innovative workforce solutions through global talent.

The summit will be held Sept. 3 at the National Energy Center of Excellence on the campus of Bismarck State College. Hosted by Commerce's Global Talent Office, the event will feature national and international experts sharing practical strategies for attracting, retaining and integrating global talent to help address workforce needs across North Dakota.

"Global talent is one of the many ways North Dakota can address workforce shortages and support longterm economic growth," said Commerce Workforce Director and Deputy Commissioner Katie Ralston Howe. "This summit gives employers and community leaders practical tools, real-world examples and new connections they can take home and put into action."

NDSU PRESIDENT STEWART MEETS MINOT LEADERS DURING STATEWIDE TOUR Minot business and community leaders got the chance to meet NDSU President Marshall Stewart and First Lady Jan Stewart on July 15, during a stop on the university's "NDSU Across North Dakota" tour.

The Minot Area Chamber EDC cohosted a gathering at the Magic City Discovery Center, drawing state, local, and military leaders – including many NDSU alumni – for informal conversation with the Stewarts.

Stewart began serving as NDSU's 16th president on May 26, bringing more than three decades of leadership experience across public, land-grant and research universities. The Minot stop was part of a two-week tour taking Stewart to communities across the state to meet with local leaders, Extension staff, students, and elected officials.

"Minot and Fargo have a special relationship — east and west, working together for the good of the whole state," said Brekka Kramer, President | CEO of the Minot Area Chamber EDC. "We're grateful for the chance to strengthen those connections and to get to know President Stewart as a new strategic partner for our community."

FORMER DOT’S PRETZELS FACILITY TO BECOME REGIONAL FOOD HUB This story originally appeared in North Dakota Living.

A crowd gathered in Velva on July 15 for a public announcement and open house for the future home of the North Central Regional Grocery and Local Food Hub. The event celebrated a generous donation from former Dot's Pretzels owners Dot and Randy Henke, who gifted the building that will house the project. Community members, local leaders, grocers, producers and project partners came together to recognize the Henkes' legacy of entrepreneurship and community investment while looking toward the future of the initiative.

The facility, formerly home to Dot's Pretzels production, will become a regional grocery redistribution center and local food hub aimed at strengthening rural grocery stores and local food access. The project will improve access to healthy, affordable food while fostering collaboration among rural grocers and producers.

"It felt like the perfect fit ... We feel good about everything we are doing here and especially that we are helping the community of Velva. We wish the best for the NDAREC in making this a part of our Velva community," Dot Henke said during the event.

The North Central Regional Grocery and Food Hub Initiative is a multi-year effort to strengthen rural food access reducing reliance on distant supply chains and supporting small businesses while keeping dollars circulating in rural communities.

The project is led by the Rural Development Finance Corporation (RDFC), with support from the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) Rural Development Center and the North Dakota Rural Electric Cooperatives Foundation. RDFC secured a $12.6 million Bush Foundation grant to support renovation of the donated building and other project costs.

"This gift of $12.6 million is unlike anything else we have seen throughout the United States. We have an opportunity here to change the way we tackle food access in a way we have never done before," said Quinn Renfandt, a local producer and steering committee member for the food hub. “I can't wait to see what we do."

Rising wholesale prices, limited product variety and less frequent deliveries are among the challenges facing grocery stores in smaller communities across North Dakota. The North Central Regional Grocery and Food Hub Initiative aims to address these challenges and strengthen rural food access.

"This project is about strengthening rural North Dakota from the ground up," NDAREC Rural Development Director Ellen Huber said. "By bringing together independent grocery stores, local farmers, food businesses and community partners, we're building a stronger food system that keeps more food dollars local, improves access to healthy food and helps rural communities thrive for generations to come."

MACEDC REPRESENTED IN NEW ORLEANS AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF CHAMBER LEADERS MACEDC Strategic Communications Director Tim Olson joined chamber professionals from across the country at the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) Annual Convention, held July 20–22 in New Orleans. ACCE connects chamber leaders with industry trends, peer networks, and new ideas to help their organizations better serve businesses and communities.

Sessions explored innovated approaches to sponsorships, membership, storytelling, civic engagement, and strategic partnerships. Olson also heard examples of how other chambers are engaging the next generation of business leaders, sharing positive business news, and building cultures of innovation. The annual gathering also gave him an opportunity to connect with peers and bring ideas from other communities back to the MACEDC team.

“The ACCE Annual Convention was a great opportunity to step outside our day-to-day work and see what chambers across the country are up to,” Olson said. “I returned with new ideas for telling our members’ stories, strengthening engagement, and ensuring we achieve our vision of being the go-to organization for the Minot area business community.”

MACEDC SUPPORTS WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AT NORTH DAKOTA GOVERNORS’ CUP MACEDC President | CEO Brekka Kramer and members of the MACEDC Board of Directors represented the organization at the North Dakota Governors’ Cup in Medora on July 27 and 28. The event provided an opportunity to engage with business leaders and elected officials from across the state while advancing conversations around North Dakota’s workforce needs.

The 2026 event raised $200,000 for the ND Career Builders Scholarship & Loan Repayment Program, which provides loan repayment assistance to qualified workers seeking employment in indemand occupations within North Dakota.

Supporting the program closely aligns with MACEDC’s workforce development pillar and its commitment to building a strong, sustainable talent pipeline for the region and the state.

Why Trinity Health is Exploring Strategic Integration Options: Healthcare is changing rapidly. Costs to deliver care keep rising, while payments from programs like Medicare, Medicaid and commercial payors do not cover the cost of the care provided. These challenges are not unique to Trinity Health or North Dakota. Many standalone hospitals across the country have faced serious financial and operational challenges. Since 2020, rising care costs and declining reimbursements are forcing hospitals to make significant changes.

TRINITY HEALTH CANCERCARE CENTER INTRODUCES CERTIFIED THERAPY DOGS TO SUPPORT PATIENTS Trinity Health Foundation is excited to announce the addition of two certified therapy dogs who will provide comfort and emotional support to patients receiving treatment at the Trinity Health CancerCare Center.

Cinder and Zeke are certified therapy dogs trained to provide a calming presence and companionship to individuals navigating challenging health journeys.

The addition of the therapy dogs was made possible through the generous support of Elly and Brock DesLauriers, who donated the insurance costs associated with having therapy dogs on-site.

“We are thrilled to offer this additional layer of support to our CancerCare Center patients,” said Greg Toepfer, Service Line Administrator (Oncology and Radiology) at Trinity Health. “Cinder and Zeke bring something truly special to our patients: a source of comfort and joy during what can be a difficult time. MSU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES 2026 GOLDEN AWARDS The Minot State University Alumni Association is pleased to announce it has selected four individuals for the 2026 Golden Award and one individual for the 2026 Young Alumni Achievement Award.

The honorees include Brekka (Nybakken) Kramer ’98, Bob Skabo ’60, Jerry Sinn ’67, and Steven Wood ’69.

The Young Alumni Achievement Award winner is McKenna (Larson) Gudmunson ’13.

“The Alumni Association is thrilled to celebrate the achievements of our Golden Award and Young Alumni Achievement Award winners,” said Courtenay Brekhus, MSU’s director of alumni engagement. “Their dedication and contributions to Minot State and their respective communities are an inspiration to our current students and alumni.”

Kramer, a Minot native, is the president | CEO of the Minot Area Chamber EDC. She was named president | CEO in 2022 following a 20-year career with Odney.

Kramer is a member of the Minot State University Board of Regents, serving as chair in 2024-26.

Skabo is a retired optometrist who practiced for 46 years before retiring in 2010. He is a member of the Minot State President’s Club and the Old Main Society.

Skabo and his wife, Jo Ann, live in Fargo.

Wood retired from the company he started, CenturyPacific, more than 30 years ago, gifting the company back to employees in 2021. Wood also served as judge advocate for the U.S. Marine Corps, fulfilling a four-year commitment; as a trial lawyer for the Internal Revenue Service; and as tax counsel for Burlington Northern Railroad (BNSF) and Glacier Park, a subsidiary managing BNSF’s vast landholding. He and his wife, Mary, live in Seattle.

Gudmunson is a realtor and the owner of 701 Realty, along with 701 Healthcare, in Minot. She is the vice president of outreach for the MSU Alumni Association.

Gudmunson is part of Rotary and Power of the Purse and is continuously working to better the community for her family and others.

The Golden Awards are the highest award bestowed by the Minot State University Alumni Association.

Selections are based on outstanding service to the University, alumni association, or their community, and distinguished leadership in the recipient’s career or community. The Young Alumni Achievement Award recipient is between the ages of 21 and 39.

The MSU Alumni Association will honor the 2026 class at its annual awards dinner on Thursday, Sept.

Sinn is a decorated Lt. Gen. (retired) in the U.S. Army, who taught at the United States Military Academy, West Point. He served as director of the army budget and worked as the military deputy for budget to the assistant secretary of the army for financial management and Comptroller. Sinn also owned and operated Quadrate, LLC, which provided engineering, project management, and business development services; and was the senior vice president, land warfare strategy and planning, at DRS Technologies, Inc.; and then served as president, DRS Technologies Tactical Systems Group.

ROOSEVELT PARK ZOO BREAKS GROUND ON AFRICAN PLAINS PAVILION EXPANSION Roosevelt Park Zoo is celebrating another milestone in its continued growth with the groundbreaking of the new African Plains Pavilion, the latest addition to the Zoo's expanding African Plains experience. Expected to open later this fall, the pavilion will further enhance year-round opportunities for guests to connect with wildlife while supporting the Zoo's mission of education, conservation, and community engagement.

The African Plains Pavilion is the second phase of the Zoo's African Plains project, following the successful opening of the indoor giraffe habitat in June 2025. The spacious indoor habitat allows guests to enjoy unforgettable encounters with the Zoo's giraffes throughout the year, including the opportunity to feed the giraffes year-round.

The new expansion will feature an approximately 800-square-foot covered pavilion designed to host giraffe feedings, unique animal encounters, educational programming, and private celebrations. The versatile space will enhance the visitor experience while creating new opportunities for community events, school groups, and special occasions.

Funding for the pavilion was made possible through generous support from John and Leslie Coughlin. "This project is so much more than a new building. It's an investment in the future of our community," said Zoo Director Dr. Logan Wood. "We are incredibly grateful to John and Leslie Coughlin for their generosity and commitment to helping Roosevelt Park Zoo continue to grow. Their support, alongside the Mouse River Enhanced Flood Protection Plan, is creating opportunities that will benefit families and visitors for generations to come. Each registered rally attendee will receive $5 Rally Bucks checks that may be used at participating food trucks, restaurants, retailers, and other local businesses. Rally Bucks may be accepted just like a check for $5 and can be used alone or combined with other forms of payment.

MINOT AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR TWO YOUTH-FOCUSED GRANT PROGRAMS The Minot Area Community Foundation (MACF) is now accepting applications for two grant programs that support youth development across North Dakota: the NWND Fund for Girls Grants and the Chevron 4-H Club & FFA Chapter Grants.

The NWND Fund for Girls Grants support programs that help girls build character, confidence, leadership, life skills, and strong values. Eligible nonprofits, schools, and charitable organizations serving girls and young women in Northwest North Dakota are encouraged to apply. In 2025, the grant program awarded more than $42,000 to organizations making a difference in the lives of girls throughout the region. Eligible programs must serve girls in one or more of the following counties: Bottineau, Burke, Divide, McHenry, McKenzie, McLean, Mountrail, Pierce, Renville, Rolette, Sheridan, Ward, Wells, and Williams. Grant applications are due September 4, 2026.

The Chevron 4-H Club & FFA Chapter Grants provide up to 20 grants of $500 to North Dakota 4-H clubs and FFA chapters. Grant funding may be used for community service projects or expenses associated with participation in the 2027 North Dakota State Fair. The program is supported by Chevron and reflects a shared commitment to youth leadership, service, and hands-on learning opportunities across the state. Applications are due November 30, 2026.

TICKET SALES OPEN FOR BADLANDS CIRCUIT FINALS RODEO Tickets are on sale for the 2026 Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo in Minot, North Dakota October 9-11.

The rodeo will feature the best twelve cowboys or cowgirls in each of eight events, who have won the most money at PRCA rodeos in North Dakota and South Dakota.

Tickets are $35 for reserved seating (the five rows closest to the arena floor). General admission tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children ages 2-12.

The circuit finals rodeo is the culmination of a season’s worth of competition, said Max Weppler, chairman of the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo. Cowboys and cowgirls look forward to finishing the season in Minot, he said.

The Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo champions advance to compete at the NFR Open, held in July in Colorado Springs. Monies earned at the circuit finals rodeo count towards the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the PRCA’s world championship event. Last year, the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo paid out over $260,000.

A Minot native and Bishop Ryan alumnus, Jaxon Lundeen has been a valuable member of the Trusted Tire & Auto team for years. BREE MCCARTHY ANNOUNCED AS OUR REDEEMER’S CHRISTIAN SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR Our Redeemer’s Christian School is pleased to announce the hire of Bree McCarthy as School Administrator.

McCarthy brings 24 years of experience in education across various roles and school districts, most recently in the Minot Public School District. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Special Education and Teaching from Eastern Washington University and a Master’s in Education from the University of Texas - Permian Basin.

McCarthy and her husband, Col. Michael McCarthy, Commander of the 5th Medical Group at Minot AFB, moved to Minot in 2025 and have two grown children.

This free community event will feature food trucks, yard games, Pepsi beverages, and plenty of family-friendly fun as Minot Parks and Northern Bottling celebrate a partnership that has helped support parks, programs, and the Minot community for generations.

KALIX CROWNED DIG FOR CASH CHAMPION ON 701 COMMUNITY NIGHT There was a great softball game that took place on the field Wednesday, July 29, but the real show-stopper was the Dig For Cash promotion presented by Sky Dancer Casino. After setting down the shovel, Chris Haseleu of Kalix earned $2,972 for the non-profit he directs.

“Part of our mission is to connect, contribute and celebrate the Minot community, and 701 Community Night brought all three of those values to life,” said Hot Tots & Honeybees General Manager Monica Blake.

“Seeing six incredible local organizations share their missions, compete together and ultimately leave Corbett Field with meaningful financial support was incredibly special. We are so grateful to Sky Dancer Casino, the Magic City Lions Club, Farmers Union Insurance and Northern Bottling for helping us create a night that was both entertaining and truly impactful.”

The competition began much earlier in the summer when six non-profits around Minot were selected to compete in a variety of on-field games for the chance at $5,000 by night’s end. Thanks to the help of the Magic City Lions Club, the lucky six organizations were selected, and invited to attend the game with 25 members of their organization.

On the day of the game, Wednesday, July 29, each of the organizations were present around the ballpark telling their stories and raising awareness for what they do to help the city of Minot and its residents. The executive directors of each non-profit came together to throw a special ceremonial first pitch to officially begin the night of competition.

Through multiple rounds of on-field games, the group of six was whittled down to a final two. An epic game of flip cup would decide the winning non-profit and send their director to the Dig For Cash game in the following inning.

With another dominant performance, Kalix President and CEO Chris Haseleu made it through the gauntlet to the pool of cash.

With Kalix supporters joining him on the field, Haseleu dug up more than $2,000 to go towards continuing the organization’s great work in the community. Additionally, Kalix was the recipient of all net proceeds from the 701 Night jersey auction presented by Farmers Union Insurance. Final calculations from the jersey auction are still being finalized, however the event raised over $3,000 for Kalix.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the event and show dignity for the people we work alongside,” said Haseleu. “We are appreciative to be around and meet other non-profits in the community, as well.”

Based out of Minot, Kalix supports independence, dignity and purpose for all. They strive for a stronger community where people of all abilities are empowered through compassion, inclusion and impactful support.

FRIENDS OF KEVIN MATTSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS ANNOUNCED INSPIRITUS Community Health Foundation announces $8,000.00 in scholarship awards from The Friends of Kevin Mattson Scholarship Endowed Fund supporting area students continuing their educational goals in the construction and trade industries.

The Friends of Kevin Mattson Scholarship fund has awarded four $2,000 scholarships. Landen Jansen, Minot, will study Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Plumbing at North Dakota State School of Science, Wahpeton; Kole Herman of Kenmare will attend Bismarck State College to pursue a degree in Welding; Tate Heer, Douglas, and Gage Holter, Kenmare, are pursuing degrees in the Electrical Lineman field at Bismarck State College.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AND ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FUNDS AVAILABLE North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) is currently accepting applications for affordable housing development assistance through the federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME), Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) and the National Housing Trust Fund (HTF), and the state’s Housing Incentive Fund (HIF).

“The programs North Dakota Housing Finance Agency administers address the state’s most pressing housing challenges,” said Brandon Dettlaff, NDHFA executive director. “Providing homes for low-wage workers, individuals and families who are aging or have disabilities and those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness strengthens our communities and positions them for growth.”

HOME addresses critical housing needs by supporting housing production and funding homeownership and rental assistance programs for low-income households. $2.5 million is available through the HOME program.

LIHTC incentivizes the production or rehabilitation of affordable rental housing by offering federal income tax credits to property owners for up to 10 years, based on their capital investment and level of commitment to lowincome tenancy. Credits of approximately $4.2 million are available.

HTF supports the development and preservation of affordable rental housing for extremely low-income households, including those experiencing homelessness. Through this program, $2.8 million is available.

HIF helps to ensure project feasibility, filling gaps in financing to increase affordability and supporting the development of housing in both urban and rural communities. NDHFA has $4.1 million available for multifamily project financing.

The application process for these programs is competitive, with conditional commitments awarded to top-scoring projects. Applicants must demonstrate the need for their proposed project or program and ensure the costs are reasonable. Applicants should use the most current version of the application when preparing and submitting materials. All funding levels are estimated and may be subject to minor changes. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. CDT on September 30, 2026.
