Minot Area Chamber EDC (MACEDC) Task Force 21 presented the first North Dakota Nuclear Triad Symposium to over 200 attendees at the Clarion Event Center in Minot on April 23 Local and national military leaders, experts, and government officials spoke about the importance of nuclear modernization, educated community members on nuclear deterrence, and discussed the effects it has on the United States' adversaries at the half-day event
After an introduction by MACEDC President | CEO Brekka Kramer and Minot’s Mayor and Task Force 21 member Tom Ross, the symposium’s keynote speaker kicked off the event. Career space and missile officer Lt. Gen. Michael J. Lutton, Deputy Commander, Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) and Deputy Commander, Air Forces Strategic-Air, U.S. Strategic Command, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, delivered a briefing on Air Force Global Strike Command
“It is critical to remember that when we deliver deterrence and long- range strike capability that we do not have allies and partners with ballistic missile forces or long-range bombers ” says Gen Lutton “We provide that unique capability in Air Force Strike Command to not only our nation but also all of those allies and partners. That capability is no more evident than at Minot Air Force Base.”
Lt. Gen. Lutton also emphasized the influence of Minot Air Force Base as the only military installation that supports two legs of the nuclear triad. “Minot has a national level responsibility. Minot has a national level mission and if you want to feel that you just need to walk into those gates There’s no greater importance to nuclear capabilities than Minot Air Force Base There’s no place our adversaries can go, there’s no place that they can hide that we can’t go ”
Following the keynote address, an overview of "America’s Strategic Posture: The Final Report of the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States,” was presented by Bill Chambers, Maj Gen United States Air Force (retired), Commission Executive Director, Institute for Defense Analyses This report is important as it highlights strategic challenges facing the country that require urgent action, and studies our adversaries while suggesting changes that will address their threats.
The National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) President & CEO Hon. David L. Nordquist addressed our adversaries. The NDIA Northern Tier Chapter, which includes the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Minnesota, is an event partner who presented briefings on China and Russia James P (Phil) Wisecup, Vice Admiral, US Navy (retired) spoke on China, and Dr Anna Batta, Associate Professor of International Security Studies Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, is an expert that spoke about Russia
4 MINOTAREACHAMBEREDCCOMMUNICATOR | MAY2024
U.S. Representative Kelly Armstrong and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum discussed their perspective about the importance of nuclear modernization and the role North Dakota and its military installations play in protecting the nation U S Senator Kevin Cramer and U S Senator John Hoeven also shared their thoughts virtually through a pre-recorded address
"The missions that we talk about here matter not just to the City of MInot, the State of North Dakota, but actually to the entire world.” says Gov. Doug Burgum. “We know that when we’re strong as a nation that’s how we achieve peace, that’s always been how it works.”
Col. Tytonia S. Moore, Deputy Director of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Modernization, Site Activation Task Force, spoke about the modernization and implementation of the Sentinel project Sentinel is the weapon system to replace the aging Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system, representing the modernization of the land-based leg of the U S nuclear triad What makes Sentinel unique is the off-base construction and footprint it covers, including 15 missile alert facilities and 150 launch facilities
“The current strategy of record for the Sentinel Program is we will use as much of the Minuteman III infrastructure as we can.” explains Col. Moore.
Task Force 21 Chair Mark J. Jantzer finished off the event with closing remarks. “Thank you to the Task Force 21 members, and the Minot Area Chamber EDC staff for providing this opportunity for us to educate and advocate for our airmen.” says Mark Jantzer. “Today we had a look at the world situation with China and Russia and where we fit in it as a community ”

In early April, the MACEDC Agribusiness Committee was given the opportunity to take a tour of the new gluten free pasta factory owned by AGT Foods and located in southeastern Minot
The committee was met by Eric Bartsch, Division Head for Global Food Ingredients at AGT Foods, who took a moment to explain the different kinds of pasta that are made in the facility, along with the types of products that are used and where they come from. He discussed that their goal in two years is to be the largest processing location in North America for gluten-free pastas, and even mentioned how their products and facility are free of many of the other top allergens, along with gluten
After donning protective equipment, the group was off to tour the building, where Eric showed off the entire process from creation to packaging, where then the products are shipped around the world
It was an incredibly insightful tour that included a glimpse into a thriving North Dakota industry. We’re grateful to our friends at AGT Foods for the tour and can’t wait to see what more is to come!

THEMINOTAREACHAMBEREDCISTAKINGANUNCONVENTIONAL APPROACHTOECONOMICDEVELOPMENT—ANDIT'SPAYINGOFF.
With a population of nearly 50,000, Minot is the fourth largest city in North Dakota. Primarily supported by agriculture, energy, military, education, and healthcare, its economy is stable and diversified The city also functions as a retail hub in the region it occupies, drawing in shoppers, diners, and consumers from all over northern North Dakota and southern Canada
But as local leaders, including Minot Area Chamber EDC Board Past Chair Kevin Black, noted, a city needs more than strong industries to stand on. It needs its own home-grown talent in order to thrive as well.
“As a local entrepreneur, I could see the great value in doing more as a community to target our support toward up-and-coming business owners,” Kevin said. “There is a lot of passion in our region to own and operate your own business This energy, combined with the formal improvements to supporting the ecosystem, makes us a strong region for entrepreneurs ”
Economic Development Specialist Mark Lyman leads the entrepreneurial programming for the Minot Area Chamber EDC “Our chamber EDC is fortunate to have a lot of member investors supporting our region and our efforts,” Mark said “But it became clear that for growth, we needed to think about growing our own as well And to do that, we needed to focus on the needs of local entrepreneurs ”
That revelation led to the creation of Start Up Minot, a locally-focused group of like-minded organizations working together to encourage entrepreneurs in the Minot region to take action on their business ideas. One of the first initiatives the Minot Area Chamber EDC started was a monthly networking event that features local entrepreneurs.
Networking events like this are a great starting point for ecosystem building, because they do two important things
First, they allow local entrepreneurs to connect who might not otherwise meet each other Starting a business is often a lonely endeavor, and you don’t often have the opportunity to meet other people walking the same path—especially entrepreneurs in other industries or areas of town.
But second, gathering local entrepreneurs in one place allows local leaders to hear from business owners firsthand.
“We really let the needs of the local entrepreneurs guide us in what services we provide,” Mark explained “By having a designated gathering point, we were able to hear from both entrepreneurs and other service providers in the region about what the needs were ”

The solution was Start Up Minot Academy, powered by CO STARTERS Using the CO STARTERS Core curriculum, the Start Up Minot Academy gives entrepreneurial hopefuls the chance to think through their business idea, learn about what it takes to get started, and build the important relationships business owners need to succeed
Five cohorts and over 50 graduates later, the Minot Area Chamber EDC is beginning to see the fruits of the program.
“Each year we’ve had multiple ribbon cuttings for either new businesses that went through the program or existing businesses who used the program to revamp,” he shared. “Those success stories each carry so much power for a community like ours.”
Among the new businesses from the Start Up Minot Academy are a thrift store, a meat shop, a UV cleaning business, and even a traveling ultrasound business
Having established Start Up Minot as the place to go for learning more about starting a business, the Minot Area Chamber EDC is exploring opportunities to build additional programming on top of the academy, such as a pitch competition with financial prizes.
It’s not often that chambers of commerce or economic developers invest so heavily in the creation of new businesses. That work is typically left to other organizations, while chambers and economic developers focus on their members and investors
But the Minot Area Chamber EDC takes a different perspective
“From what we’ve seen, 60-80% of local economic growth comes from businesses in your own backyard When you realize that growth is stronger and more stable when it comes from within the region, you quickly see the value in the businesses with five, ten, or fifteen employees.”

Mark Lyman, economic development specialist, was joined by MACEDC board member Ryan Ackerman to host a tour for personnel from the North Dakota Department of Commerce and the City of Minot midApril Ackerman and Lyman provided information about the Logistics Park of North Dakota (LPND) and the adjoining Minot Intermodal Facility. These two unique properties in the state provide a backbone of support for the export and growth needs of our state’s producers, processors, and shippers.
Currently, the Intermodal Facility is shipping a full unit train (200+ containers) on a near-weekly basis to ports in Tacoma/Seattle, where they receive special dockside service on to vessels that can reach international ports in less than two weeks from leaving the U S
At Logistics Park of North Dakota portion of the tour, attendees were given a closer look as they stepped off the bus, where MACEDC discussed the value of anchor tenants like AGT Foods, and the value of marrying available property with high quality rail service from partners like BNSF Railway The available land at LPND is owned by the Minot Area Chamber EDC, with lots currently available for purchase We are thrilled to partner with organization like the Department of Commerce, and are always excited to share the Magic in Minot.

Cherie Olson Harms, President/CEO of Leonardite Products LLC, in Williston, ND was named ND Small Business Person of the year by U.S Small Business Administration.
Cherie Olson Harms is the majority owner and CEO of Leonardite Products LLC, a mining and processing operation in Williston, ND. It is used in agricultural fertilizers and oil drilling fluids The company sells its product domestically and exports to 12 countries worldwide
Rebuilding the processing plant to expand capabilities was key to growing a viable company. Additional challenges were faced including embezzlement and the pandemic. Leveraging multiple SBA loan programs and the North Dakota SBDC, Harms has met the challenges with the guidance she received and that has led to better margins and consistent net profits
Harms contributes to and serves on the boards of multiple charitable organizations, including the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, regional hospital foundations, and the Great Plains Food Bank

MSU Life, Minot State University's student activities group, plans and executes over 100 events to entertain students throughout the academic year. But their enthusiasm isn’t confined to the campus. Members of MSU Life have spent two nights, one in each of the fall and spring semesters, entertaining residents at The View, an assisted living facility in Minot
Ady Jelleberg, a senior at Minot State and a member of MSU Life who also works part time at The View, worked to bring her two worlds together starting with Bingo Night in the fall “The leadership committee at MSU Life tries to do two outreach/volunteer activities in the community, and I work at the front desk as The View part time, and I knew we needed to get these two groups together,” she said “MSU students love bingo and the residents at The View love bingo, so I knew that was the perfect fit ”
Fourteen Minot State students spent an evening at The View playing bingo with 11 residents According to MSU Life member Emmett Espino, the first event was a success. “The residents were very interactive with us and that made it so much fun,” he said. “Bingo is an event MSU Life loves, and it was so much fun to take that to The View. Everyone thinks bingo is the event, but really the event is playing with people you enjoy. The students who went had a blast.”
The event was such a success that MSU Life returned in March, this time with various games, including Water Pong, UNO, and blackjack. For Jelleberg, giving back to her community is at the heart of what MSU Life is all about. “Giving back to a community that supports you is very important,” she said. “I want my community to know that I’m here for them as much as they have been for me These nights are ones to remember I can remember at bingo; we were all laughing and playing together which led to a great night ”

Front row from left, Max Bray, Isabella Johnson, Krista Permentier, Sara VanWickler, and Jessica Martinez.
While the core of MSU Life is entertainment, according to Jelleberg, relationship building both on and off campus is something she will carry forward.
“It was great to bring two things I love the most here in Minot together,” she said “When we were visiting with the residents, they told us how they can give us the opportunity to do events like these, and we can help give them a night they will remember, and that’s something I will forever be grateful for
“MSU Life is a huge part of who I am, and it will always have a special place in my heart. Nights like these are the reason why.

The Minot Hot Tots are heading into their second season as a franchise, and they are looking to include even more excitement to their growing promotional schedule. In order to do this, the team will take on a new “what if” identity for three games during the 2024 season.
When the team was deciding their name in September of 2022, they looked to the Minot community for name suggestions These suggestions could’ve been anything, but the team was looking for a name that was fun, unique, and highlighted something specific about Minot or North Dakota in general After hundreds of names were submitted, the team narrowed down the top 5 names Those names were the Hot Tots, Night Owls, Dak Rats, Why Nots, and Berserkers
For this upcoming season the team has chosen to show off what it may have been like, if the Minot Hot Tots would have instead been named the Minot Berserkers. For three games during the 2024 season, the normal Minot Hot Tots uniforms will be switched to reflect this team name, rooted in Scandinavian heritage.
A Berserker is another name for a viking, and is defined as an ancient Norse warrior who fought in a wild frenzy The Old Norse form of the word was berserk, likely meaning "bear-shirt", or someone who wears a coat made out of a bear's skin The Minot Berserkers will wear a jersey paying homage to these ancient Norse warriors and their combat style
“When we announced our real name last season, the comments were mostly positive, but we had a few people that mentioned wanting a name that was more fierce, scary, or intimidating”, said Hot Tots General Manager and Managing Partner Monica Hocking. “This is our way of giving those people what they want, and getting to take on an alternate identity that is completely different then what fans are used to ”
The Hot Tots will play as the Berserkers on June 6th, June 20th, and August 1st. Tickets to the first game on June 6th are available through the Hot Tots and Honeybees Hybrid Plan powered by Scheels. The other games will become available when single game tickets go on sale later this year. Fans wanting to purchase tickets to these games or learn more about the team are encouraged to check out hottotsbaseball.com or sign up for the Hot Tots enewsletter for all information and updates

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota (BCBSND) Caring Foundation teamed up with the Bismarck Bobcats, Fargo Force and University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks to help Shut Out the Stigma of accessing mental health services For the first 20 saves of each February and March home game of these teams, the BCBSND Caring Foundation donated $50 to fund Sources of Strength programming in North Dakota schools Altogether, the campaign raised $24,000 to provide four rural North Dakota schools with the necessary funding to bring Sources of Strength curriculum into their schools.
"Through our partnership with North Dakota hockey teams we continue to help our communities value and prioritize mental health. We are not only reducing stigma but also raising vital funds to empower rural schools with youth mental health resiliency programming to ensure our communities' youngest members have the tools they need to thrive,” said Amber Blomberg, Executive Director of the Caring Foundation
The BCBSND Caring Foundation’s Social Determinants of Health Study and research from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) revealed the crucial need for mental health work in North Dakota. In 2021, NAMI reported 6,000 North Dakotans aged 12 to 17 have depression and the majority of these North Dakotans did not receive any care in 2020. Many times this is due to access, as recent tracking statistics show 46% of North Dakotans live in a mental health professional shortage area. By investing in curriculum like Sources of Strength, more youth will get the tools they need to understand themselves and their peers’ mental health

Eight Minot State University art students are exhibiting in the annual senior art exhibition Coalescence: Eva Bloom, Dyana DeCoteau-Dyess, AJ Gorthy, Carly Johnson, Allie Nelson, Peter Pañales, Maia Robertson, Timmothy Timm Defined as, “the merging of different elements to form a whole,” Coalescence will open with a reception at the Northwest Arts Center on Friday, May 3, at 6:30 p m and be on display until June 7
Capstone is the culminating experience for art majors, allowing them to apply what they have learned in their time at Minot State University This exhibition commemorates their years of art experience at the university level and showcases their skills
Bloom combines traditionally feminine crafts such as embroidery, beadwork, and doll-making with photography to weave a personal familial narrative. The finished work is delicate and vulnerable; inspired by romanticist and surrealist art movements.“Most art classes focus on one medium, but my advisor let me delve into anything and everything I felt in control of my creative process,” said Bloom
DeCoteau-Dyess explores her indigenous heritage through fine art photography. “The Aadizookaang (Sacred Stories) exhibit means much more to me than just another artistic project. It is a meaningful journey back to my roots, a spiritual connection to the oral history of my ancestors,” said DeCoteau-Dyess
Future art educator Gorthy explores education and methodology in the art classroom for his capstone Gorthy’s work focuses on the journey rather than the finished product “The pinnacle of this exhibition is to showcase the steps of the process needed to create a final piece of art,” Gorthy said
Johnson wanted to find a way to share her faith through her art She does just that by designing a collection of fresh Christian apparel that appeals to a broader audience “I take inspiration from my faith while being able to pull away from the stereotypical Christian designs adding an edge to them was an exciting process,” said Jonson
Nelson’s work centers around nostalgia and femininity. The women who shaped her come to life through masterful screen prints and lithographs. “The prints are memories and symbols that embody the individual they are modeled after. From childhood, through adolescence, and into adulthood, these women have helped me navigate this labyrinth we call life,” Nelson said.
Born in the Philippines, Pañales shares a glimpse into his childhood through vibrant acrylic paintings. Starting with core memories, Pañales turns his past into a whimsical viewing experience. “This series contains memories from past experiences and interactions living in a third-world country depicting the beauty of nature, daily life, and Filipino culture,” Pañales said
Robertson’s work centers around oceanic life, specifically coral reefs Robertson was inspired by her father’s snorkeling adventures and wanted to bring light to the condition of modern coral reefs Using ceramics, Maia creates an oceanic installation for the viewer “Ceramics is not just about creating beautiful objects; it allows me to slow down and find peace in what I do,” said Robertson

As teachers working with students in the military daily, it is gratifying to offer them hands-on skills that will equip them for work in the rapidly growing field of data science and artificial intelligence "
Minot State’s data science program combines courses from three programs incorporating math, computer programming, and business skills This multi-discipline approach enables a well-rounded data science student to readily adapt to today's workplace or seek an advanced degree “Minot State University is pleased to serve our student body and those serving our country with our new data science program,” Erisman added
The AU-ABC is a program between the United States Air Force and civilian institutions to provide Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) graduates with advanced education opportunities.
