T
he joy and wonder of discovering new places and new experiences has always been the inspiration behind our hotel brands. And while we offer many extraordinary adventures, for me there is little that compares to the mystery and allure of Africa. To explore its untamed nature and witness its wildlife up close is to embrace the essence of travel in its purest form. Since my first visit to Africa many years ago, I’ve felt a deeply personal connection with this captivating continent. And it’s been a joy to share this with our guests through resorts, lodges and tented camps that bring them to the heart of this inspirational destination. Our African journey began in 2008 with the launch of Elewana Collection, our portfolio of luxurious lodges and camps across Kenya and Tanzania that offer exceptional safari excursions in the most iconic locations. The name Elewana comes from the Swahili word for “harmony”,

triding briskly along the platform at Da Nang station to catch my 8am train, it occurs to me that not one of the early commutes I routinely endure back home has ever come close to this in terms of sheer romance or style. Sure, the Vietnamese climate helps. More to the point, never once in the UK has a handsomely liveried attendant greeted me with the tantalising offer of a stiff drink. To be clear, The Vietage by Anantara is not an entire train. It is an exceptionally luxurious carriage coupled to the rear of the Reunification Express, the storied north-south

service that winds its way along the spine of Vietnam from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Conceived and operated by luxury hotel brand Anantara, it’s the exclusive railway excursion against which all others ought to be judged: a chic, slow-travel connection between the brand’s two central-coast resorts. One carriage departs in the morning from Da Nang to Quy Nhon and then on to Nha Trang, with a second carriage following the route in the opposite direction, setting off in the afternoon. Either way, it is considered one of the most scenic stretches of railway in Southeast Asia. Inside, a dozen passengers settle into six private booths separated by curved canewebbing screens. Each compartment is tastefully dressed in pale linen and earth-toned

upholstery, the aesthetic pitched somewhere between Art Deco and high-end contemporary. There’s a black marble bar, leather stools and a treatment room offering a neck and shoulder massage. There is also a sense, as we glide into deep countryside, of stepping back in time to a more gracious age. As an iced coffee arrives in a cut-glass tumbler, from the window Vietnam reveals itself in painterly vignettes: rice paddies backlit by pale sunshine, water buffalo with their egrets, and schoolchildren waving from crossings. It is a more civilised way to travel than the cramped fuselage of a jet and it has a lighter footprint. Later, I perch on a stool at the bar. Mr Binh, one of the hosts, recommends a Tropical Mule from the signature cocktail list – mandarin vodka, coconut liqueur and fresh fruit juice over ice. “We go slowly,” he says, polishing a glass. “That’s the point.” He tells me some guests nap, others write. Opposite me, a woman is sketching in her notebook. The view keeps shifting: bamboo bridges, lotus ponds, sugar palms. At one point, we pass a Cao Dai temple painted a luminous pink and I half expect the monks to wave. Lunch arrives on time at my booth: a seafood salad with green papaya and grilled prawns, followed by Hoi An chicken rice, then strawberries with coconut yoghurt. The menu, I’m told,
was devised by a chef with a Michelin-starred background – each dish light, elegant and paced to match the journey. There’s wine, naturally. I resist a second cocktail... for now. By late afternoon, we roll somewhat tipsily into Quy Nhon. A driver from Anantara Quy Nhon Villas whisks me to a glass-fronted suite overlooking a private cove. Later, I’ll visit Avani Quy Nhon Resort, just down the coast, where peach-coloured cliffs rise behind the pool. That evening, bobbing in the water, I think of the train and the refreshing, priceless luxury of a journey unhurried by time. J

ach October northern Thailand’s monsoonal rainy season comes to an end, ushering in the drier and sunnier cool season – perfect conditions for languorous strolls in the city or invigorating hikes in nature. So slow down, relax and discover the many wonders of Chiang Mai.

Founded in 1296, Chiang Mai’s Old City is the physical and cultural heart of this northern Thailand gem. A 90-minute walk traces the moat, the ancient walls and the historic gates. However, the real treasures of this heritage quarter are found within its narrow lanes. Savour the aromas of street food and hear temple bells drifting through the alleys as you uncover centuries-old temples such as Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phan Tao. Stop for a bowl of khao soi (noodle curry), or enjoy a traditional Thai massage at the Chiang Mai Women’s Correctional Institution. In truth, the Old City is so rich with discoveries, it’s best to simply lose yourself and let its secrets reveal themselves to you.
Perched on a hillside overlooking the city, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple is one of Chiang Mai’s most famous landmarks. And while most visitors arrive by taxi or tour, it can also be reached via a moderately challenging two- to three-hour hike through lush jungle. This walk has two distinct sections. The first takes you along the Monk’s Trail to Wat Pha Lat temple, where you can rest and enjoy a coffee. (We also recommend a small detour to see the nearby waterfall.) The second, steeper section winds deeper into the jungle, emerging just below Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. All that is left is to ascend the 306 steps of the Naga Staircase as you admire the golden temple spires glinting through the trees.
The River Ping winds through the heart of the city, and seeing it from one of Anantara Chiang Mai Resort’s JAO River Cruises offers a whole new perspective and a welcome respite for weary legs. The highlight is a sunset cruise aboard Dibba Yana Chatta (‘Heavenly Boat’), a hand-crafted vessel designed by renowned artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. The Nimmanhaemin Road area invites you to discover a different yet equally charming side of the city. This vibrant quarter – known locally as Nimman – is home to a mix of trendy cafés, arty hideaways and diverse dining. Spend a morning browsing the back street boutiques before stopping for a coffee and a little people-watching at the awardwinning Ristr8to. Visit the Chiang Mai University Art Centre gallery. And end your stroll at the nearby Wat Suan Dok temple, where you can spend an hour or two learning about Buddhism from the monks. J

here is a kind of euphoric energy that courses through you after a day on the slopes. This year marks the birth of Baron Theophil Edvard von Hansen, the mastermind who would lay the foundations for Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna Hotel. Born in Denmark, Hansen moved to Austria in 1846. POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE
For most of us, the daily routine is what prevents us from embracing adventure. Because we lead busy lives we choose not to linger and look at sunrises – we have to get ready for our working day. We cannot stop and soak in the moment when the air hits differently, or walk off in the direction of a beautiful sound, because everything we do in daily life is timed, quantified and purposeful. But travel exists beyond the daily grind. In words attributed to T.S. Eliot and Leonard Woolf, “The journey, not the arrival, matters.” Yet the journey is often overlooked by a global travel industry that has been encouraged to package off and parcel up experiences into branded chunks. Every element of a trip is quantified, pre-defined and sold as seen, so that we know what we will find before we get there. We rarely hear about the value and power of the unknown. The place where the maps end, and the enormity of nature takes over. The wild. But with the shift in our idea of luxury that’s changing. THE DEEP WORLD
In his 2024 bestseller, An Immense World, examining the ways in which animals’ senses open up very different worlds to them which we cannot perceive, National Geographic’s Ed Yong talks about the need for us not just “to travel to other places; we need to see through other eyes.” This has given rise to an idea borrowed from oceanographers’ classifications of coastal, reef and ocean waters: the Deep World. This is the world beyond our usual line of sight of experience: remote and
pristine, living by its own principles and ecosystems. And for bold travellers with the desire to see the world differently, no continent has more to offer than Africa. Almost 20% of the ‘Motherland’ is wilderness – habitat untouched by humanity. That’s more than 1.6 million square miles. In terrestrial terms, and discounting Antarctica, this is as close to true space as Earth comes. That doesn’t mean that the bold few who want to watch the sunrise over the Masai Mara in Kenya, or the sand dunes of Bazaruto Island on Mozambique’s archipelago, need to do it the hard way. Because for anyone looking for transformational travel, help is at hand. WINDOWS TO THE WILDERNESS

hen we think about great wine, most of us conjure up images of France and the sweeping vineyards of Bordeaux or Champagne. Alternatively, Italy’s Tuscany, with its earthy Chiantis and intense Barolos, may come to mind. But for true oenologists, the wine world has much more to offer. From the ancient terraces of the Douro and the snow-fed vines of Mendoza to the pioneering slopes of Khao Yai, wine is being constantly reimagined, rediscovered and recreated. Here we profile some of Europe’s forgotten gems as well as new, up-and-coming producers. SPAIN
Among dedicated oenophiles, Spain is considered one of the great wine producers. And few regions in the country have the history and prestige of Ribera del Duero. Located high on the northern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, the area follows the course of the Duero River, rising in the Duruelo de la Sierra and meandering west into northern Portugal. Most of the region’s 120 square kilometres of vineyards are centred around the province of Burgos, where wine production dates back over 2,000 years to Roman times. In fact, a 66-metre mosaic of Bacchus, the god of wine, was discovered here in 1972, at Baños de Valdearados. Blessed with a unique local climate, comprising hot, dry summers and long, harsh winters, combined with chalky, sandy and clay-rich soils, Burgos’ terroir is perfect for the cultivation of the Tempranillo grapes (known locally as Tinto Fino, or Tinta del País in Ribera del Duero) that define the region’s wines. Bearing similarities to the better-known and much-loved Riojas and Malbecs, these wines are deeply coloured and rich with full-bodied flavours of dark cherry and blackberry. Lending themselves to long ageing in oak casks, they pair wonderfully with meats and sausages.
For visitors to the region, NH Collection Palacio de Burgos is perfectly positioned to explore both the city’s rich wine-making history as well as its surrounding vineyards. Make time to take the 50-minute drive out to Dominio de Cair to sample some outstanding wines at a remarkable location, or enjoy the hotel’s exceptional selection of Ribera del Duero wines that Maître Baldomero González Núñez pairs with traditional Castilian dishes such as blood sausage (morcilla), suckling lamb (lechazo) and goat shoulder (paletilla de cabrito). PORTUGAL
Continuing along the Duero River down into Portugal is one of Europe’s great wine pilgrimages. As the name of the river changes to Douro, the grapes and vineyards that follow its course increasingly focus on whole new flavours of port wine. The historic city of Porto provides an ideal gateway into the Douro Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city’s ancient centre with its centuries-old port cellars offers a remarkable stay for wine enthusiasts. NH Collection Porto Batalha places guests in the heart of the city, within easy reach of Vila Nova de Gaia’s iconic port lodges. And just across the river, the new Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia allows visitors the unique opportunity to stay in the cellars of the oldest port wine house in the world. Founded in 1638 and restored in 2025, Kopke’s heritage is legendary. With a portfolio of rare vintages, including tawny ports and very rare white port wines, a visit here provides access to a golden age of port production. Whilst there, enjoy an atmospheric tasting evening combined with live Fado performances (a traditional musical form, characterised by themes of loss and longing) before continuing down through Portugal to the nation’s capital for the next leg of your wine journey. Lisbon provides easy access to some of Portugal’s most exciting and traditional wine experiences. Sophisticated travellers base themselves at the iconic Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa (established in 1933, it is one of The Leading Hotels of the World) to explore the nearby wine route through Portugal’s largest wine-producing region, Alentejo. Highly recommended is a tasting at Fitapreta Vinhos in Evora where young and unconventional Portuguese oenologist Antonio Macanita is experimenting with the recovery of traditional and forgotten grapes. For those with a sweeter palate, however, a trip into Setúbal to discover the fortified Moscatel de Setúbal should not be missed.

The last few decades have seen the emergence of great wines from non-traditional growing regions, including South America. Argentina is particularly worthy of note, not least because the country’s premier wine-growing region, Mendoza, also contains some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Nestling in the foothills of the Andes, the province is famous for its high-altitude vineyards, producing exceptional Malbecs. Argentine Malbec’s story is one of determination, innovation and more than a bit of luck. It’s one that Andres Lafarge, General Secretary of the Argentinian Sommeliers’ Association, is proud to share. “Malbecs in Argentina started to be seriously produced in the 1960s and late-1970s,” he says. “Malbec grapes were almost extinct in their native Bordeaux in France. But we had them in Argentina. Jesuit monks had originally brought vines from Spain, and in the 19th century Michel Pouget brought Malbec cuttings, which were planted in Mendoza and thrived. We started developing the wine and exporting it around the world. So today, we feel it is something that is very much ours.” Visitors to the region should base themselves in Mendoza City where, among the urban sprawl, you can stumble upon century-old bodegas offering tasting experiences and guided tours of the region’s many outstanding vineyards. Located in the heart of the city just steps from Plaza Independencia, NH Mendoza Cordillera hotel is an ideal starting point for exploring the region. Within walking distance of many of the city’s attractions, it’s also possible to organise excursions to the high-altitude vineyards of producers like Matias Riccitelli, who combine traditional growing techniques with innovation and technology to develop truly exceptional tasting wines. As Lafarge says, “In Argentina, we have everything required for great wine: the soil, the climate, the grapes and the experience. But perhaps the great secret to our wine production is that we irrigate our vines with melted snow from the glaciers of the Andes. Nowhere else can say that!”
For most people, Thailand conjures up images of white sandy beaches and cocktails by azure seas. Not vineyards and vintners. But quite aside from the islands and bustling, cosmopolitan cities, Thailand is fast becoming the centre of a distinctive and innovative Asian wine scene. Just a couple of hours’ drive from Bangkok, Khao Yai’s rolling hills and cooler mountain climate create a unique terroir for winemaking. The region has earned international attention for its bold experimentation, with vineyards like GranMonte setting new standards. Here, the visitor experience is as much about the setting as it is about wine tasting. Hillside vineyards are surrounded by tropical greenery, mountain vistas and views across the Asoke Valley. It has also become an internationally regarded terroir for a wide variety of grapes, from Syrah to Chenin Blanc. In fact, growers from Champagne recently visited the region to learn how they might adapt and evolve their techniques as European summers grow ever hotter. Nutawan Jumpanak, Chief Sommelier at Anantara Hotels & Resorts in Bangkok, is passionate about the future for Thai wines. “Wineries like GranMonte are creating something authentically Thai,” she says. “It takes care and time to make wine here. The days are very hot and the nights very cold on the mountain. But we are learning so much about creating great wines in a whole different environment. The clay soil has limestone running through it, which gives these wines a lovely acidity that pairs wonderfully with spicy Thai food.” With a passion for great wine, Jumpanak is developing the next generation of homegrown sommeliers. ravellers looking to take a winter break usually fall into two distinct camps. On one side are those who want to run to the sun as soon as temperatures start to drop, seeking out tropical islands and Southern Hemisphere hotspots. And on the other side are the chionophiles, who invariably head to the mountains in search of steep slopes, fresh powder and the joys of après-ski. There is, however, a third option. Taking a European city break in winter can be a truly magical experience. Depending on where you choose to visit and how energetic you feel, you could find yourself marvelling at medieval architecture, exploring vibrant Christmas markets, meandering down frosted cobblestone streets, or cycling over picturesque bridges next to glistening waterways. If that sounds a little exhausting (or you are in need of warming up), you can head inside and have your pick of museums and art galleries, enjoy a classical concert in a historic opera house, or try the local speciality in a traditional restaurant. Alternatively, just sit yourself down in a cosy and welcoming riverside café, sipping hot chocolate and watching the world go by. And visiting off-season means the streets are less crowded, hotels are less expensive and, if you are lucky, the cityscape will be lightly dusted with snow, just to add to the romance of your trip. But where should you go? Here are six suggestions to get you started…
If you needed an excuse to visit Amsterdam this winter, surely joining in the city’s 750th birthday celebrations is reason enough? With its rich history, beautiful buildings and intricate waterways, the “Venice of the North” is mesmerising in the colder months. For outdoor fun, an early morning frosty walk around Vondelpark, followed by a coffee on the Groot Melkuis terrace, is a great way to start the day. If the temperature drops low enough (and it can!), you might see locals skating on the frozen canals. A much safer bet is to head to the Museumplein, a temporary ice rink set in front of the world-famous Rijksmuseum and decorated with Christmas trees. It is also home to the annual winter market. And on weekends you will be certain to find a pop-up festive fair with artisanal stalls, food trucks and live performances. So, there is plenty to do, but what’s the vibe? Well, the Dutch have a word that sums up Amsterdam in winter perfectly – “gezellig”. Although there is no literal English translation, it is a concept that means a happy feeling of cosiness, friendliness and conviviality. You can feel it everywhere you go but particularly in the city’s social spaces. From the unique café culture and neighbourhood bars to the restaurants, shops and hotels, we should all try and be more gezellig. Ever since Budapest emerged from behind the Iron Curtain in 1989, it has been attracting an ever-growing audience drawn by its eclectic mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture, luxury hotels and buzzing nightlife. The city is bisected by the River Danube, reinforcing its reputation as the “Paris of the East”. If you don’t believe it, wrap up warm and take a stroll along Andrássy Avenue and draw your own comparisons with the Champs Élysées. If you are looking for culture, take a tour of the Budapest Opera House, or better still, book tickets for a
Christmas performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. And make time to visit the Parliament building, which, while spectacular from the outside, is a treasure trove of stained glass windows, stunning frescoes and gold-plated staircases inside. Once referred to as the “Capital of the World”, today Vienna is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe. First-time visitors will undoubtedly have a long to-do list. The Hofburg Palace, check. A walk around the Ringstrasse, tick. See Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” at the Belvedere Palace, obviously. And a selfie outside Schönbrunn Palace is a must. But once you’ve dispensed with the guidebook, you can really start to enjoy yourself. For an overview of Vienna on a crisp, clear day, make your way to St Stephen’s Cathedral. The focal point and symbol
of the city, you can marvel at its Gothic splendour, explore the catacombs and crypts, and climb the 343 steps of the South Tower for incredible views. Alternatively, take a spin on the Wiener Riesenrad, the 128-year-old Ferris wheel, and watch the early sunset over the breathtaking skyline. For the soundtrack to your trip – with apologies to fans of Ultravox – you have to keep it classical. Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert were all sons of the city and a Christmas concert at the Konzerthaus is unmissable. And to keep your energy levels up, make certain to visit some of Vienna’s
UNESCO-recognised coffee houses, like Café Central and Café Sacher. We won’t tell you what to order, but if you don’t try the Apfelstrudel we can’t be friends. Prague is one of the most captivating cities at any time of the year, but from November it takes on a gothic beauty with almost fairytale qualities. With a dusting of seasonal snow, the “City of a Thousand Spires” looks like a Christmas card brought to life. The days are short, but the atmosphere is enchanting, especially when the bustling festive markets are on. To experience it for yourself, spend an evening surrounded by the dramatic Baroque buildings in the Old Town Square or Wenceslas Square with a cup of svařák (“hot wine”) in hand, and you’ll understand. If it gets too cold (average temperatures can be close to freezing), seek refuge in one of the city’s grand cafés. With their rich history, both the Café Louvre (a favourite of Albert Einstein) and Café Savoy offer a warm and authentic atmosphere, made all the better when paired with a slice of medovník (a multilayered honey cake). Away from the markets and pastries, must-sees include St Vitus Cathedral, Prague’s Jewish Museum and Veletržní Palác, Prague’s National Gallery. You should also make time to see the city’s remarkable Astronomical Clock. This medieval tower dates back to the 15th century and shows the time, phases of the moon and zodiac signs. When the bell chimes on the hour, the Twelve Apostles can be seen parading past the windows. If you really can’t face cold winds, flurries of snow and icy pavements, perhaps Lisbon is more your speed. Easy to explore on foot and with fewer crowds, mild weather and sensational sea views, the “City of Seven Hills” is easy to fall in love with. If the sun is shining (and there is every chance), the Tropical Botanical Garden is wonderful. To end your evening, forget carol concerts and drop into one of the city’s fabled Fado houses. What Bruges lacks in size and stature, it makes up for in medieval charm, character and a gentler pace of life. With rows of chocolate-box buildings, cobbled streets and quiet canals, on dark evenings lights twinkle from every window, encapsulating the Christmas spirit. Adding to this holiday-season mood, in recent years Bruges has welcomed locals and visitors alike with its “Winter Glow” experience. Running from mid-November until early January, it burns bright like a sparkler on a winter’s night. The main attraction is the Light Experience Trail, a series of installations stretching over three kilometres through the streets. Even the Grinch couldn’t help but feel joyful. The focal point for all these festivities is Burg Square. The historic heart is overlooked by the 600-year-old City Hall and is a vibrant meeting place. From there, walk to the Basilica of the Holy Blood, take in scenic views from the Rozenhoedkaai and even explore the Minnewaterpark
(Lake of Love) if it isn’t too chilly (the wind off the North Sea can be bracing). Alternatively, head over to Langestratte for a collection of unique, independent shops, bars and cafés. Don’t miss the Depla chocolatier, and check out the RAMart contemporary gallery. And you can’t leave Bruges without sampling some of the best ales in the world. At ’t Brugs Beertje beer house, you’ll have over 300 to choose from. STAY HERE: as quaint and quirky as the city itself, NH Brugge is the ideal base for exploring. Although housed in a former monastery, there is nothing spartan about the light and modern interiors. The cosy bar even has an open fireplace. DON’T MISS: climb the Belfort of Bruges. The iconic bell tower is 83 metres high and dates back to the 13th century. The 366-step spiral staircase gets steeper and narrower as you ascend, so is not for the fainthearted, but the views are worth it. J

But look a little closer, and a quieter, more refined vision of Mexico reveals itself. A Mexico that whispers, rather than shouts. Begin your odyssey into this more sophisticated Mexico in the capital, Mexico City. Despite being one of the world’s most sprawling and populous capitals, here lies a city of extraordinary grace and composure. In the Centro Histórico, nuance thrives in the spaces between spectacle. The Zócalo is famed for epic rallies and parades. Yet catch this vast public square at first light and the place feels solemn, almost monastic. The galleries provide a window into the mind of modern Mexico: Proyectos Monclova shows edgy, conceptual work in a stripped-back space, while Galería OMR balances bold international pieces with an unmistakably Mexican sensibility. Pioneering cocktail bars like Licorería Limantour do world-class drinks shorn of excessive theatrics. Even the architecture speaks to this restraint, with striking 20th-century curves teasing flashes of hard-nosed minimalism. If the mezcalerías of Reforma whetted your appetite, head south to Oaxaca – widely regarded as the birthplace of mezcal and a city where refinement is rooted in ritual. Unlike its more famous (dare we say rowdier?) cousin tequila, which can only be made from blue Weber agave, mezcal can be distilled from different varieties of the plant. Here, it’s still often crafted the traditional way: roasted in underground pits, crushed by stone and fermented slowly over days. The result is a spirit meant for sipping and savouring, not slamming and showing off. That reverence shapes the bars themselves. You won’t find neon or gimmicks here. The best mezcalerías are understated, almost meditative – candlelit rooms with handlabelled bottles, a soft burr of conversation and the occasional crackle of old vinyl. Order a wild tobalá or a smoky espadín, and it arrives in a clay copita, with orange slices and sal de gusano on the side. At La Mezcaloteca, tastings are guided and quietly forensic; at Cuish, rare small-batch distillations are served in a space that feels more gallery than bar.
