FEBRUARY’S ‘PICK OF THE PORTS’ Vienna, Austria Vienna is a truly stunning city that oozes class and sophistication.

Just a 10 minute from the city centre, Vienna is compact and has a magnificent fusion of old meets new. Each street has a story to tell and I just loved wandering round, watching s. the street artists and enjoying delights in the fancy Patisseries.

Of course, you must visit the world famous Opera House for a performance, we also did a back stage tour of the historic building which was fascinating. Another one of my favourite buildings was St Stephen’s Cathedral with its unique multi-coloured tiled roof, sparking in the sunshine.

Shopping got a massive ten stars from me! It’s no wonder the Viennese people are so immaculately dressed. I definitely got the impression that Vienna was very much a fashion forward capital. I was even more impressed with the quirky antique stores. I found many unusual stores selling ‘one offs’. Try and go with an empty suitcase as I’m sure you will find some wonderful souvenirs to pick up.

If you are lucky to see Vienna over the festive season, you are in for a treat. I visited in winter and experienced a real Christmas market, delicious food was freshly prepared on open fires, handmade Christmas decorations all on display and of course, warm mulled wine. It did feel quite magical!

MUST SEES

One day in Vienna was lovely but I would certainly jump at the chance to go back again as there is so much to see and do for all ages in this truly fascinating city.

WHERE WILL YOUR CRUISE TAKE YOU? Sydney, Australia Sydney, often referred to as “The Harbour City” is the perfect place to stay before or after a cruise. More than a third of Australia’s population lives in New South Wales, and Sydney is the e nation’s largest but not its capital. Canberra holds that crown.

Whether it is shopping in the city centre, relaxing on the sandy beaches or walking around iconic Sydney Harbour, there is plenty to keep you busy. A highlight of my stay was the Sydney Opera, this is a must! The best areas of the city to stay are near the Opera House or alternatively at Darling Harbour where you will find a choice of casual and sophisticated eating places using quality local produce. What a setting for an after dinner drink in one of the trendy wine bars. The Rocks area was a real favourite of mine where you are sure to find street performers and music playing creating a relaxed and fun ambiance. May and June are perfect times to visit during the festivals and then when the city lights up! On the water, above the water or below it, there’s a million ways to enjoy Sydney Harbour. An added bonus is the Port is set in the heart of the city so transferring to your hotel or the airport is so simple. Public transport is readily available.
