Ruby Princess

Rita and I were very lucky to be given the opportunity to sail aboard Ruby Princess for 5 nights as part of Princess Cruises Academy at Sea.

Ruby Princess is an absolutely beautiful ship and the moment you walk on board you are made to feel very welcome and special.

The heart of the ship ‘The Piazza’ is very grand and beautiful, with a choice of bars, coffee shop, street entertainers and a really great atmosphere. Have a glass of wine at Vines Bar, relax with a coffee at The International Café or sip a cocktail at the Crooners Bar.

Our Cabin We were located an ocean view stateroom on deck 5 only a few seconds walk to the heart of the ship. Our cabin was very reasonably sized and we were both very impressed with the separate space for luggage and wardrobe space.

As ‘Elite’ members whilst on-board we had our own Cabin Steward. Thomas was extremely helpful and friendly. Our room was serviced twice a day and he delivered fresh fruit each day and canapés before our formal evening. Thomas delivered our daily ‘Princess Patter’ which gave so much information about the port we were visiting and the activities on board that day.

Entertainment The entertainment on board was fantastic and very varied. Our first night whilst in Liverpool, was a Beatles tribute act, they were fab. We also watched a show called ‘Once upon a dream’ with video effects instead of set change which was incredible. The performers were excellent and the same standard as a “Broadway” show. We also enjoyed ‘Mentalist’ a show where they read minds which was very interesting and something a bit different. Every night after the show we hit the dancefloor in “Skywalkers” nightclub, it is a great place to socialise and let your hair down.

One of my highlights was ‘Movies Under The Stars’. To watch a film outside with a cosy blanket, complimentary hot chocolate, warm cookies and fresh popcorn was a rare but fantastic experience.

Revitalisation We visited ‘The Sanctuary’ which is an adult only relaxation venue, with comfy beds and where you will find The Lotus Spa. Access costs around $20 for ½ day or $40 for a full day and you can book a wide variety of treatments which were reasonably priced. We loved to relax on the pool deck, the pools are all heated and we made good use of the hot tubs.

My favourite was the pool situated right at the back of the ship where you could look out at the beautiful views.

Lotus Spa has a massive gym which has all the modern equipment.

I only used the gym once... The food was much more tempting!

SHIP REVIEW >> RUBY PRINCESS Food, Glorious Food The food was absolutely out of this world and the service was excellent.

We dined most evenings in Da Vinci’s, one of three main dining restaurants. One of our favourite dishes was a parmesan basket filled with pasta it was INCREDIBLE! We had the same waiters each night and they were very attentive and knew what we were drinking without having to ask. It’s the little touches, that make your holiday!

We also ate in one of the ships speciality restaurants ‘Sabatini’s’ which was honestly the best restaurant I have ever dined in, with a real “Italian” vibe and excellent views. Andreas, the manager hosted our table and I was very privileged to sit with him. Not only was he so enthusiastic and passionate about Princess Cruises after having worked with them for 25 years but he was also very handsome!

The cover charge for “Sabatini’s” restaurant was $25 per person which was great value.

Behind The Scenes Finally we were given the opportunity to see ‘behind the scenes’. We were able to get a tour from the executive chef around the kitchens and he explained how much food they need and how they have been awarded best hygiene at sea. We were taken up to the Bridge where second in command explained everything you need to know about sailing a ship.

It was an amazing experience.

Overall we had the BEST cruise ever and met some amazing people!

I would recommend Princess Cruises for families and couples of all ages.

SEPTEMBER ‘PICK OF THE PORTS’ Ketchikan The Gateway to Alaska Ketchikan, USA is the first city you reach in Alaska when sailing from Vancouver on an Alaskan Cruise.

The Misty Fjords by Sea Plane I can recommend visiting the Misty Fjords, an area of natural beauty inland from Ketchikan, made over the centuries by the natural forces of water over the cliffs. As you can imagine it gets its name from the clouds overhead and this is why you travel by sea plane as you can go under the clouds and land on one of the many lakes in the area.

Abundant wildlife Depending on the time of year, you can see all kinds of wildlife including “CRITTERS”– that’s bears to you and me.

The largest concentration of Fishing Canneries in the USA and my favourite, the National Emblem of America the Bald Eagle. They are magnificent as they fly past your balcony as they did ours no more than 4 feet from us and if they are in the trees all you need to look out for is their white heads which look like golf balls.

Ancient traditions In Ketchikan they have a very proud tradition of lumber felling, don’t miss the great excursion to the Saxman Native Village & Lumberjack Show, or if you’re lucky there may be a show in town you can go along and see some of these skills still being practised today.

Ketchikan is a fascinating port of call on an Alaskan cruise, a very unique part of the world.

WHERE WILL YOUR CRUISE TAKE YOU? Lake Garda This beautiful lake simply has something for everyone. My family and I spent one week enjoying the beautiful scenery, food and wine of this region before embarking on our cruise from Venice.

Where to stay Within a short transfer from Verona and Venice. I would recommend staying along the east bank of the river which is perfect for cycling, walking and relaxing. The shores of the lake are studded with pretty harbour towns with cobbled streets and charming little boutiques not to mention the irresistible gelato shops offering the best ice–cream I have ever tasted, in flavours you can only imagine (raspberry and ginger and lemon and basil were our favourites).

Places to visit We did have a car but the bus and ferry service allows you to choose a different town each day and go and explore. The resorts do not feel commercialised although some are busier than others. We spent a day up in the mountains walking in Tinagle having crossed the Lake by ferry. You must take a trip to Verona and wander the streets looking for Romeo and Juliet’s balcony. Don’t miss the breath–taking Amphitheatre in the centre of the city where the opera is performed each evening.

A stay in Lake Garda is the perfect accompaniment to a week cruising round the Eastern Mediterranean from Venice.

We took our first cruise in 2007 with our two daughters then aged 12 and 7. My youngest, Sophie, now at the ripe old age of 14 proudly boasted whilst on P&O Ventura in July that this was her 13th cruise!

Every new ship brings new innovations and you will be amazed at the facilities to be found on board i.e. rock climbing walls, ten pin bowling alleys, water parks and slides, ice rinks, mini golf and sports courts. Apart from Disney, where else can you expect to bump into Shrek or Spongebob Square Pants and enjoy character breakfasts with them?

Complimentary Kids Clubs What sets a cruise holiday apart from a land based holiday is the complimentary kids clubs. The staff hold qualifications in education and recreation so you know that your children are in safe hands. The clubs are split into age groups and typically would consist of; 3-5 year olds where they will enjoy things like outdoor play, glove puppet shows and creative play.

6-8 year olds activities of games and sports challenges and talent shows 9-11 year olds will enjoy scavenger hunts, music, games consoles, discos and arts and crafts.

THE PERFECT HOLIDAY OPTION Teens can “chill out” and meet new friends from around the globe From my experience travelling with teens is where cruise holidays excel as a normal land holiday doesn’t usually cater for this age group. Teens are taken up to the age of 17 and depending on the amount of teens on board may be split into younger and older teens. On some ships they have their own sunbathing areas and indoors they have game consoles, DJ booths and ‘chill out’ areas. The clubs arrange things like teen discos, pool parties at night and talent shows which usually run until around 1am Babies, Tots and Night Nursery Parents would accompany their child when using the soft play areas. Some cruises cater for younger children particularly well with a fully supervised night nursery for 5’s and are available from 6pm until approximately 2am. They will give you a pager should they need to contact you. You would normally pay a fee for this service but on P&O child friendly ships this is free of charge and on a first come first served basis.

Travelling as a family you can spend as much or as little time together as you wish. My girls can’t wait to go to their clubs and will eat early so that they can be there at 7pm every night.
