MSU Alumni Insider MAVERICKS IN ACTION: VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Judy Beahm ’80 One alum was looking for connection in her next chapter. She found it as an alumni volunteer.

Judy Beahm ’80 graduated from MSU with a degree in business administration. She built a career as a bookkeeper and accountant, first working for several Mankato organizations and eventually starting her own business in 2004. In 2025, Beahm was starting to think about retirement, but “when you’re self-employed, it’s hard to walk out the door and quit working,” she said. “I was looking for something to pull me away from my work.” Judy Beahm interacting with student volunteers and guests during the MSU Night at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres event in April.

“The opportunity to meet new people who are so passionate about involvement in the University, that is what I was looking for in a volunteer experience.”

She called the Alumni Association at MSU and joined us for her first volunteer outing, Mavericks on the Road: Twin Cities, in the fall of 2025. Since then, Judy has become a regular volunteer and is looking forward to even more opportunities (like returning to Target Field for MSU Night at the Twins in August). “It’s been fun getting involved,” she says. “The opportunity to meet new people who are so passionate about involvement in the University, that is what I was looking for in a volunteer experience.”

Become a Maverick Volunteer We have volunteer opportunities throughout the year and across the country. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact assistant director Danielle Duffey at danielle.duffey.2@mnsu.edu.

Summer 2026 B A C K I N T H E D AY

A Streak of Genius Roger Nissly ‘76 wrote to expose a truly revealing trend that hit campus in the 1970s .... streaking. We found this photo and the articles below in a 1974 issue of The Reporter.

Images and articles published in The Mankato State Daily Reporter, March 20 and April 2, 1974.

“A couple times a week the word would pass through campus that streakers would be running through the campus mall at a certain time. Large groups of students would gather on each side of the mall and sure enough at the designated time a car or two would pull up to the north end and anywhere from three to 10 students would jump out and run completely naked to the south end and jump into some waiting cars and be gone.” The Daily Reporter published “safety tips” for streakers, including wearing sneakers and reflectorized tape for nighttime runs. The paper also ran editorials on the topic.

What is a trend you recall from your time on campus? Share Your Story
