Welcome While you’re making your housing decision, keep in mind that at Minnesota State Mankato, the residence communities are a lot more than just a place to sleep. The residence communities are grouped into five communities: Crawford, McElroy, Julia A. Sears, Margaret R. Preska, and Stadium Heights. Each has distinctive characteristics, inspired in part by location, design and the different academic learning community programs housed within. Each offers services designed to make life on campus easier and more convenient.

Apply for Housing Beginning October 1 While many will choose a room based on the location of each of our communities, some will find attractive options in the many room types we offer, including apartments, renovated spaces, and semisuites with full bathrooms. Others may decide to participate in our Learning Communities Program for first-year students.

Your residential choices are extensive. Consider your interests, and indicate your preferences on your housing application. Rest assured that when you do arrive at Minnesota State Mankato, help will be on hand to make your transition to campus life as smooth as possible. Apply for housing and let us know your housing and dining preferences by following these steps: 1. Confirm Enrollment at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Only admitted students may apply for housing.

2. Review the Materials - This book outlines your residence community options. Reading this information carefully will help you determine your preferences.

3. Tell Us Your Preferences - On the Housing Reservation Application, answer all of the questions and indicate your preferences for residence community, room type, roommate, etc. While we cannot always honor every request, we will do our best to assign you to a room that will meet your needs.

4. Sign the Contract - Carefully read the enclosed Housing Contract before you sign. Keep in mind that the contract covers the entire academic year. Sign and date the contract at the bottom. If you are under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must also sign the contract.

5. Apply For Housing - Return your Housing Reservation Application, Housing Contract, and $250 prepayment to the Department of Residential Life as soon as possible.

6. We’ll Confirm Your Reservation - You will receive a postcard that will let you know when you can expect your room assignment, find out about your roommate, and learn more about Move-In Day.

Double Semi-Suites

Julia Sears and Preska semi-suites include two rooms that share a full, compartmentalized bathroom (shower, toilet, and sink). Double semi-suites house two students in each bedroom connected by the bathroom. Triple Rooms

Designed for three people, triple rooms are larger than double rooms in Crawford and McElroy. We have upgraded all of our triple rooms to include air conditioning in each room (even Basic room types). Furnished three-person apartment units have three single bedrooms and are located in the Stadium Heights Residence Community.

Shuttle Service to and From Stadium Heights: A number of bus services are available to Stadium Heights residents simply by using their MavCARD to ride for free. Routes pick up every 14 to 30 minutes during weekdays from the bus shelter located at Stadium Heights.

These rooms are the same size as renovated rooms and are located in Crawford C and McElroy E, F, and G Halls. Students living on these floors enjoy modern floor kitchens and lounges that are air-conditioned.

Renovated Rooms in Crawford A, B, and D and McElroy H and Preska I Halls Renovated Double, Renovated Triple, Full-Bath 3-Person Suite, Single, and Economy Single Rooms

These rooms were renovated between 2007 and 2011, and have an atmosphere to relax and study in. The renovation included contemporary closets, in-room air conditioning, and the ability to control the heat in each room among many other changes. These rooms are the same size as basic double, full-bath 3-person suite, single, and economy single rooms.

Renovated rooms are located in Crawford A, B, and D, McElroy H and Preska I Halls.

Enjoy new lighting throughout the hall and in each room. You can even dim the lights in the halls and lounges.

Enjoy the comforts of a new heating system, with the ability to adjust the heat in your room.

The renovated plumbing projects included new sinks in each room with the added bonus of new medicine cabinets and tile around the sinks.

Renovated rooms include all of the amenities of Basic rooms as listed above.

New tile was installed in each of the community bathrooms.

Additional outlets have been installed in resident rooms.

Learning Communities Crawford, McElroy and Preska Residence Communities house most of the University’s Learning Community programs.

First-year students wishing to live in a learning community will take some of their classes together and live in the same area of their residence community, providing an excellent opportunity to connect with other first-year students. Each learning community has their own Learning Community Coordinator (LCC) who is dedicated to the academic success of every member as they transition to college life at Minnesota State Mankato.

Community Amenities Parking

Parking requires a permit. Residents of Crawford, McElroy, Julia Sears, and Preska may obtain a permit at the Cashiers Office located in the Centennial Student Union. Students may also purchase permits online. Parking permits to park at Stadium Heights are included in the apartment rate.

Residents of Stadium Heights may request a Stadium Heights parking permit through the Property Owners Office.

Technology

Computer Lab - Carkoski Commons (between Crawford and McElroy) has a computer lab available to students living on campus. Students use these labs to access the Internet, use some of the many installed software packages, and to print using MavPRINT. MavPRINT Stations - Print stations are available in all residence communities and the Carkoski Computer Lab. Computer Kiosks - Computer Kiosks are available near each front desk/lobby.

ResTech Services - Located in Carkoski Commons, ResTech provides computer support to Residence Community students at no cost to the student.

Security Measures

Study Lounges

Each floor has a study lounge for the residents of that floor community to use. Upholstered chairs and study tables make for a quiet and comfortable place for study groups or to study alone.

Floor Kitchens

Each floor offers a kitchen furnished with a ceramic smoothtop range, microwave, sink and community table for residents to use.

Front Desk

Some of the services and facilities available at the front desks of each community may include cooking equipment and utensils available for check out, a DVD movie program, administrative forms, guest parking permits, flat-bed carts, recreational equipment, snow shovels, and vacuum cleaners.

In addition, the desk staff provides information to visitors and offers residents assistance in emergency situations.

Mail Service

Each room has an assigned mailbox located in the lobby of the residence community. Apartment mailboxes are located just inside the buildings.

A number of security measures are taken to assist residents in maintaining a safe residence community environment. All room doors have peepholes so residents may see who is at their door before opening it. Community floor bathrooms are locked so that only floor residents can gain entry.

MavCARDs provide access to residence community floors as these doors are locked 24 hours a day. MavCARDs also provide residents entry to exterior entrances in each community. In addition, each residence community is staffed

by Overnight Safety Monitors from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. The Overnight Safety Monitors monitor doors during the nighttime hours. Security programs and access hours are subject to change.

Cable TV

Ice machines are located in each residence community.

There is no additional charge for ice.

Bicycle Storage

Bicycles may be kept in racks located near main or rear entrances of each residence community or they may be stored in student rooms. Bicycles may not be stored in hallways, laundry facilities, lounges, or floor kitchens.

Clothes washers and dryers are available in the lower level areas of Crawford, McElroy F and Preska. Laundry rooms are also available on each floor in Julia Sears, McElroy H and Preska I. Apartment laundry rooms are located in each building. Washer and dryer use is included in your room and board rate.

High-Speed Internet Access

Students have available wired high-speed Internet connections in each room. Wireless Internet access is available in rooms and in the public areas of each residence community, including floor study lounges.

Each bedroom is equipped with a cable television/stereo jack. Stadium Heights living room areas also have cable available. More than 65 cable TV channels are included, as well as HBO and Showtime.

Bike Repair Station

A bike repair station is located conveniently between Preska Residence Community and Carkoski Commons. This freestanding unit has all of the tools needed for basic bicycle repair, including air pumps and is accessible 24 hours per day.

Things to Bring While the residence communities are comfortably furnished, most students choose to enhance their rooms by adding their own personal touch. Meet the Staff Full Time Staff

Graduate Staff

Area Director The Area Director is responsible for all activities within the residence community. Specifically she/he directs, in conjunction with other Residential Life staff, programming planning for residents, administrative duties with the community, and student experience and behavior issues.

The Area Director is a general liaison with the rest of the University and has an office located near the front desk of each community.

Student Services Coordinator (SSC) The Students Services Coordinator oversees the operation of the residence community front desk and coordinates room changes for students within and between residence communities.

Residence Hall Program Advisor and Summer Operations Coordinator The Residence Hall Program Advisor and Summer Operations Coordinator provides leadership in the advising of the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). Additionally, she/ he manages all aspects of the Residential Life summer conference, guest housing, and pre-season programs.

Student Success Coordinator and Conduct Hearing Officer The Student Success Coordinator and Conduct Hearing Officer provides leadership in communicating expectations regarding student behavior and in responding to student behaviors ranging from alleged policy violations to crisis interventions. The Student Success Coordinator has an office located in the main Residential Life Office.

Hall Director (HD) The Hall Director is responsible for coordinating community development activities and functions, responding to student needs and behavior concerns, and connecting students to campus services. Additionally, she/he provides direct supervision to a team of Community Advisors. The Hall Director has an office located in the lobby area of the residence community.

Student Staff Community Advisor (CA) A Community Advisor (CA) helps students in their transition to campus, organizes activities, serves as a resource to campus, leads floor meetings, and helps communicate housing and campus information. Community Advisors live on each floor in Crawford, McElroy, Julia Sears and Preska Halls.

Community Advisors live in each Stadium Heights building.

Learning Community Coordinator A Learning Community Coordinator (LCC) helps students in their academic transition to campus through individual conversations and activities related to the learning community focus.

Overnight Safety Monitor Overnight Safety Monitors assist residents on the main campus when front desks are closed, monitor exterior doors, and report suspicious activity, vandalism, and other safety concerns. Overnight Safety Monitors partner with residents and University Security to foster a secure community.

Stadium Heights Security Staff Stadium Heights Security Staff assist residents of Stadium Heights from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily. They monitor exterior doors and report suspicious activity, vandalism and other safety concerns. Stadium Heights Security Staff partner with residents and Residential Life staff to foster a secure community.

The Housing Contract The Housing Contract is a legal, binding document you sign and return along with your Housing Reservation Application. Please read the contract carefully so that you understand each section. All Housing Contracts are in effect for one academic year or that portion of the academic year remaining at the time occupancy begins. Once you have signed the contract, you can be released from the contract only under the specific guidelines listed in the termination and release sections of the contract. Any contract changes (release, room changes, meal changes, etc.) during the academic year affecting billing become effective the Saturday following the transaction.

Contract Cancellation

You may cancel your contract only before the start of your first semester of occupancy. Cancellations must be submitted in writing, online, or by email. You may not cancel your contract over the phone. Cancellations must be received by the Department of Residential Life. Cancellations sent to other University offices will not cancel your contract. Failure to register or withdrawal from the University does not cancel your contract.

Payment of Bills

Fall semester charges will first be viewable on the University’s website in August. Spring semester charges are viewable beginning in December. Room and board payments are due according to University policy and an installment plan is available. Students receiving financial aid will have the aid applied toward their total University charges. More information about the payment schedule is available on the University’s website.

Housing During Breaks Each residence community remains open during Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Breaks. Housing is also available for students attending summer session classes.

The summer housing location will be determined in March.

Stadium Heights Residence Community residents will also have an option to stay in the apartments. A separate fee is charged for Winter Break and summer housing. The dining hall is closed during each of these breaks.

Accessibility Resources

Applying for special on-campus housing accommodations based on medical need: In compliance with Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Minnesota State University, Mankato students with documented disabilities may request special housing accommodations. These requests will be evaluated within the context of current housing policies, students’ needs, and available facilities.

In order for such housing accommodation requests to be considered, students must first be registered with the Office of Accessibility Resources. To register with Office of Accessibility Resources, submit a brief written explanation of your disability and the requested accommodation to the Minnesota State Mankato Office of Accessibility Resources, 132 Memorial Library, Mankato, MN 56001. The Accessibility Resouces staff will then instruct you on the documentation process and determine what accommodations you are eligible to receive.

For full consideration, requests for accommodations based on medical need must be received by: > May 15 for housing beginning fall semester > December 1 for housing beginning spring semester > April 1 for summer session housing

Roommate Matching

We will make every effort possible to honor your roommate, room type and hall preferences according to the information you provide on your Housing Reservation Application.

Students who wish to live with or near another particular student should include this information on their Housing Reservation Application. Both students must request each other and provide the other student’s name and TechID. Requests of this nature may also be made online. To help us find the best assignment for students requesting to live with each other, both students should indicate the same room preferences in the same order of preference. You may also use RoomSync, our roommate matching software through Facebook, to find your own roommate. Roommate requests must be submitted by May 20 for full consideration.

Frequently Asked Questions Do first-year students have to live on campus?

First-year students do not have to live on campus. Though, about 87% of them choose to live on campus.

Do first-year students stay in a specific residence community?

While many first-year students will stay in areas where we have programs for first-year students, such as Learning Communities in Crawford, McElroy and Preska, any student may live in any community.

What furnishings are provided for residents?

For each resident in Crawford, McElroy, Julia Sears, and Preska, we supply a lofted bed, mattress, dresser/drawers, desk, and a desk chair. In each residence community room, we provide a sink, closet space, and blinds for windows.

Stadium Heights apartment living rooms include a couch, two chairs, a coffee table, and an end table. Each room also has a network jack and a cable TV jack. Residents provide their own coaxial and Internet cables. Double bedrooms include lofted extra-long twin beds and single rooms include a full-size bed. Each room has a dresser/ drawers, writing desk, and chair for each resident.

Apartment kitchens include a full-size refrigerator/freezer, electric range, dishwasher, and seating.

Furnishings provided by the University remain in the room in which they are located.

Can first-year students bring cars?

All students may bring a vehicle to campus. A permit is required to park your vehicle.

What bedding and linen items should I bring?

What does it cost to live in on-campus housing?

Residential Life room rates are available on our website.

Do I need to loft my own bed?

All rooms in Crawford, McElroy, Julia Sears, Preska communities in addition to and Stadium Heights double rooms include lofted beds. Lofted beds may not be replaced with self-constructed or other rented lofts. Apartment full-size beds are not lofted.

Can I bring a refrigerator?

Yes. Refrigerators brought to campus must be in good working condition and are subject to inspection. Students may not bring full-size refrigerators to campus.

Is telephone service available?

Yes. Wired telephone service can be contracted separately.

Is Internet access provided?

Wireless Internet access is available in student rooms as well as all public areas of each residence community. Wired Internet connections are available in each student room.

Which electrical appliances can I bring?

The Department of Residential Life reserves the right to restrict appliances that pose a danger to the residence communities. Specifically, the following appliances are not allowed: charcoal grills, gas grills, toaster ovens, freezers, halogen lamps and appliances with an open heating element or flame.

Look for appliances that have earned the ENERGY STARÂŽ logo. These products have met energy efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and help reduce the amount of energy utilized in each residence community.

Students must provide their own bedding, pillows, towels, lamps (non-halogen), metal or flame-retardant wastebaskets (for fire safety reasons), and other personal items. Residence hall and double apartment rooms have 80� (extra-long) mattresses. Single apartment bedrooms have standard length full-size mattresses.
