For Ralph Kämena, the world is made up of details – trifles – which he brings sharply into focus. Little details which still form their own world. Through his manner of zooming in on things, he explores the world. At the same time he makes unexpected movements – sharp and jagged – that bring the attention to the Other. Despite the fact that Kämena’s world appears to be made up of empty spaces, he primarily focuses on how third parties use the spaces. However clinical the rooms look, he is fascinated by the people who use them. Sometimes they even appear in the images.

His photos of waiting rooms and lobbies are similar to his photos of computer rooms and laboratories. He looks for the details – the lines and structure – that determine the space. The photos he took of packed living rooms in Asia fascinate him just as much as the desolation of the empty offices in Eastern Europe.

Again, there are always details that tell the story of those who remain out of the picture, whether the space is almost completely empty or packed to the brim. Perhaps it is fair to say that

Kämena looks for extremes: empty clinical spaces that one can hardly picture people using. The abandoned, commanding offices from which the lives of others were controlled. Or just overfilled rooms that are so chaotic that it is difficult to imagine people living in them. All of these are, in fact, places one would not want to remain in for long.

Kämena travels the world with his camera. He records human existence. This is how he came across a room full of men’s clothing: a collection of shoes on the floor, ties on the wall, and suits on a rack. The image is enough to make the viewer laugh: if you have so many clothes, why would you not have made enough storage space for them? Kämena also captures a white room; the floor, wall, table and chairs are all white. Here, again, a question pops up. Why is the trashcan black? At this moment, the viewer becomes as haunted by detail as the photographer and enters into Kämena’s world.

In de ogen van Ralph Kämena bestaat de wereld uit details.

Kleinigheden. Door hem scherp in beeld gebracht. Kleinigheden die steeds een wereld op zich vormen. Door op zijn manier in te zoemen tast hij de wereld af. Hij maakt onverwachte bewegingen, scherp en hoekig, wel met aandacht voor de ander. Want ondanks dat Kämena’s wereld lijkt te bestaan uit lege ruimtes, legt hij vooral het gebruik van die ruimtes door derden vast. Hoe klinisch de vertrekken er ook uitzien, hij is gefascineerd door de gebruikers van die kamers. Soms verschijnen ze zelfs in beeld.

In de foto’s van wachtkamers en entrees gaat het Kämena in feite om hetzelfde als in de foto’s die hij maakte van computerkamers en laboratoria. Hij zoekt de details, de lijnen en de structuur, waardoor wordt de ruimte bepaald? De foto’s die hij in Azië maakte van volgestouwde woonkamers hebben voor hem eenzelfde fascinatie als de leegte van verlaten kantoorruimtes in Oost-Europa. Altijd zijn er weer die details die het verhaal vertellen van degene die zelf uit beeld is gebleven, of de ruimte nu bijna leeg is of dat voller nauwelijks voorstelbaar is. Je zou

kunnen zeggen dat Kämena de uitersten opzoekt: de kale klinische ruimtes waarvan het nauwelijks voorstelbaar is dat er gewerkt wordt. De verlaten imposante kantoren van waaruit het leven van anderen werd gecontroleerd. Of juist de overvolle kamers met zoveel chaos dat het moeilijk voor te stellen is dat mensen zo kunnen wonen. Eigenlijk steeds plaatsen waar je zelf niet in zou willen verblijven….

Kämena trekt de wereld over met zijn camera. Hij registreert het menselijke bestaan. Zo vond hij een kamer vol mannenkleding.

Een verzameling schoenen op de vloer, dassen aan de wand en pakken aan een rek. Het werkt op de lachspieren: als je zoveel kleren hebt waarom dan geen adequate opbergruimte gemaakt?

Hij vond ook een witte kamer: vloer, muur, tafel en stoelen. Ook hier komt direct een vraag naar boven: waarom mag hier wel de prullenbak zwart zijn? En dan is het moment gekomen dat de kijker net zo ‘haunted by detail’ is als de fotograaf en je Kämena’s wereld binnentreedt.

INTIMATE AND SPECTACULAR The work of Ralph Kämena Martijn Verhoeven

Interior spaces play an important role in almost all Ralph Kämena’s work. Here is where we recognize the individual and his or her daily habits and rituals, but indirectly. Kämena rarely features the human subject in the work itself. Who occupies these kitchens, laboratories and living rooms? What do they look like?

Where do they come from? What is their profession? Like a detective, we exhaustively search the image looking for meaningful details (of which there are many in Kämena’s work) that can tell us something about the nature and origin of the inhabitants. But we can only venture guesses. Our gaze is forced to remain on the surface. The viewer may ask: should I really be looking at this? It feels, sometimes, like an intimate act.

Unlike the interiors shot by a photographer such as Dirk Braeckman, who, through his fascination with patina and wearand-tear allows the viewer to conjure up memories involving mattresses and furnishings, Kämena’s interiors are always fresh and sharply photographed. The grimy, gray undertones of Braeckman, which sometimes suggest that a crime has taken place, are completely absent in Kämena’s work. The focus is less on the atmosphere and more on things, arrangements, constructions: how and in which ways have individuals arranged their living environment? Part of what is most moving about the photos is how regularly the human subject seems unable to organize things effectively.

But there is more. Kämena’s work has a unique and ambiguous relationship with the spectacular. First, something about this development in general. To satisfy a longing for experiences, our society constructs themed environments which are primarily meant to tempt and please. It is no coincidence that the well-

known book The Experience Economy by Pine and Gilmore has the subtitle Work is Theater and Every Business a Stage.

More and more business transactions become an experience.

The worth or attractiveness of a product or service is increasingly recommended in terms of the experience that the purchase or use of the article in question offers. In this way, countless moods, emotions, and sensations are called up.1 The power of Kämena’s work lies in the fact that he uses aspects of the so-called experience economy in an intelligent manner without allowing the viewer to be completely overwhelmed by them. Videos and photo-sequences are presented in display boxes built to scale. In these works – installations, really – the viewer is transported to Cairo, Hong Kong or a neighborhood in Ypenburg, for example. In these places, the camera spends minutes scanning the exterior of walls of large bank buildings, as well as the intimate interiors.

Kämena uses moving video footage and cinematic montage techniques, however, to better allow the viewer to watch the scene and to point out the details. It is as if Kämena is saying “look again; look more closely!” He does not immerse the viewer thoughtlessly, as so many players in the experience economy do.

In this way, Kämena always keeps interesting questions open.

It is precisely the combination of the intimate and hyperpersonal, on one hand, and the spectacular, on the other, that makes the work powerful and unique enough to keep fascinating the viewer.

INTIEM EN SPECTACULAIR Over het werk van Ralph Kämena Martijn Verhoeven

In bijna al het werk van Ralph Kämena speelt het interieur een belangrijke rol. Daarin herkennen we de mens en zijn dagelijkse gewoontes en rituelen, maar altijd indirect. De mens zelf wordt door Kämena zelden afgebeeld. Wie zijn die bewoners van keukens, laboratoria en woonkamers, hoe zien zij eruit, uit welk land komen ze, welk beroep oefenen ze uit? Als een detective grazen we het beeld af op zoek naar veelbetekenende details (details zijn er veel in het werk van Kämena) die ons meer kunnen vertellen over de aard en de afkomst van de bewoners.

Maar we kunnen er alleen maar naar raden. Onze blikken blijven noodgedwongen op de oppervlakten rusten. Mogen we hier eigenlijk wel naar kijken? vragen we ons regelmatig af.

Immers wat we doen voelt soms als een intieme daad.

Anders dan de interieurs van een fotograaf als Dirk Braeckman, die door zijn fascinatie met slijt en patina de kijker herinneringen laat oproepen die in matrassen en behangsels zijn getrokken, zijn de interieurs van Kämena altijd fris en haarscherp gefotografeerd. De smoezelige, grijze ondertoon van Braeckman, die soms suggereert dat er een misdaad heeft plaatsgevonden, ontbreekt hier volledig. Het accent ligt minder op de sfeer, vaker op spullen, opstellingen, constructies: hoe en op welke wijze heeft de mens zijn leefomgeving ingericht? De foto’s ontroeren door de onmacht die zo tastbaar is om de dingen goed in te richten.

Maar er is nog iets. Het werk van Kämena heeft een bijzondere en dubbelzinnige relatie met het spectaculaire. Eerst iets over die ontwikkeling in het algemeen. In antwoord op de vraag naar belevenissen ontstaan in onze maatschappij in toenemende mate gethematiseerde omgevingen waarvan het voornaamste doel is ons te lokken en te behagen. Niet voor niets draagt het beroemde

boek The Experience Economy van de auteurs Pine en Gilmore de ondertitel Work is Theatre and Every Business a Stage.

Steeds meer zaken worden een belevenis, een experience. De waarde of aantrekkelijkheid van een product of dienst wordt steeds meer in termen van ervaring aangeprezen die de aankoop of het gebruik van het betreffende artikel de consument zal bieden. Daarbij worden talloze stemmingen, emoties en sensaties opgeroepen1. De kracht in het werk van Kämena schuilt in het op intelligente wijze gebruiken van aspecten uit die zogenoemde experience economy, zonder dat de kijker er volledig in opgaat.

De video-werken en fotosequenties worden gepresenteerd in op schaal gebouwde kijkdozen. In deze installaties wordt de kijker meegevoerd naar bijvoorbeeld Cairo, Hong Kong of een Vinexwijk in Ypenburg. Daarbij tast de camera minutenlang de huid af van de muren van grote bankgebouwen maar evenzeer van intieme interieurs.

Kämena gebruikt het bewegende videobeeld en filmische montagetechnieken om de kijker beter te laten kijken en hem te wijzen op details. Kijk nog eens, lijkt hij te willen zeggen, kijk beter! Niet, zoals veel spelers in de experience economy, om de toeschouwer gedachtenloos volledig onder te dompelen. Daarom blijven er altijd interessante vragen open.

Juist de combinatie van het intieme, het hyperpersoonlijke aan de ene kant en het spectaculaire aan de andere kant maakt het werk sterk en bijzonder genoeg om te blijven boeien.

Only a handful of photos in this book present a small look at the world outside the boundaries of homes and rooms, offices and laboratories. And even these barely hint at the location or environment that borders the photographed interior. In one photo, for example, a window gives a glimpse of the urban landscape of Rotterdam’s Wilhemina pier bathed in light. Others show a nondescript section of a row house or the vague outlines of an anonymous business park with trees. But these views don’t yield much information. They are dim and empty backgrounds that do not have the power and clarity to have a noticeable influence on the interior where the photographer is. Because of this impotence, the views rarely evoke emotion and thus reinforce the photographer’s intentions. The photos with vistas are the exceptions that prove the rule. Kämena is clearly concerned with accentuating interiors. These interior and, usually closed, spaces are characterized by a sense of shelter, boundaries and limitations.

They are, in a sense, introverted. In these spaces, a fascinating visual battle for the viewer’s attention takes place between graphic details, colors, light, shadow, compositions and objects.

To formulate this idea more concretely: we are witness to items, arrangements, and spatial choreography in which we can recognize the human being and his or her daily worries, activities, habits, and preferences. Furthermore, like the invisible vistas, people as actors and directors of the spaces on display rarely figure in the photographs. What we see are mainly the remnants, traces, and residue of a diverse assortment of human activities.

Based on this selection of photos, these consist of fairly structured and ordered activities. Activities that, without any warning, can escalate into different forms of compulsiveness. Human action can also take place in fairly chaotic patterns and processes which lead to a sort of spatial desperation. We see that humans often attempt to appropriate spaces in fairly inept ways. This happens

either through an excess of decoration or the creation, intentional or not, of extreme and almost palpable emptiness. Through the simultaneous presentation of examples from both extremes, as well as many variations in between, the photographer achieves much, including the evocation of a compelling feeling of empathy in the viewer. Each and every interior is a tragic reflection of human shortcomings in the field of interior arrangement. The deficiencies and lack of vision in both the making and the arrangement and organization of space are brought so powerfully and poignantly into view that the evident fascination with found spaces and compositions, as well as the photographic quality of the work, almost cannot offer a sufficient counterbalance.

Kämena is undoubtedly fascinated by the relationship between space and human activity. He purposefully, yet still subtly, holds up a mirror for us to see this relationship. For this reason, the photographs in this book can be considered interior landscapes on both the psychological and visual-spatial levels. They are almost picturesque scenes which, nevertheless, conceal multiple layers and suggest various meanings. Attention to these often visually complex and intriguing places is increased by the fact that the viewer’s gaze is never diverted or led astray by ‘signals’ from the outside world. In each case, different objects or the position or focus of the camera prevent a possible connection to the exterior or link between inside and outside. The visual obstructions or physical obstacles vary from an excess of incoming light to curtains, grates, and plants. Often the photographs suggest or show spaces without windows, doors, or other openings. In a number of cases, the presence of an opening can only be inferred indirectly by the way light falls on a wall or the floor. In this way, the interiors on display become practically autonomous places.

Kämena’s work create a feeling of simultaneous concentration and alienation. Many of the interiors contain a high degree of presence and sharpness, but they are also universal and without a specific sense of location. The dead-end corridors, the carelessly placed office cabinets, the chaos of various consumer goods: each is a treasure of everyday banality. The images are highly recognizable.

Everyone knows and recognizes at least one or more similar places or situations. Still, even after meticulously studying the narrative details in the photos, the viewer can hardly ever identify exactly where the interior is located. The simultaneous presence of recognition and alienation is a fascinating paradox.

Kämena selects specific interiors at specific locations, detaches them from their environment, zooms in on details, but, ultimately, creates reasonably recognizable images. They are all, in fact, variations on a theme.

But the most constant factor these photos share, apart from the tragedy of human shortcomings with respect to the arrangement of interior spaces, is the frame or envelope surrounding the interiors. Every interior is, after all, part of a larger architectural structure—a house, office, factory, or laboratory, for example.

This factor connects all the photographs with one another. The actual architecture, like the surrounding area and the people, is not shown in the photos. However, unlike the other two unseen elements, the architecture literally provides structure for the

interior, and, thus, also for Kämena’s photographs. Stated another way, in a fictional situation lacking both environment and human subjects, there can still be interiors. However, without the architectural structure, the framework, the interior cannot exist.

Space, interior, and architecture are thus inextricably linked.

Kämena’s photos are, perhaps more than anything else, about architecture. The work reveals architecture primarily as something that encloses, encases, hides and protects. The way in which Kämena focuses on architecture might best be compared to a medical exam. In this comparison, his photos are the equivalent of images doctors obtain of specific internal parts of the body: suspicious areas or areas that can be looked at further and analyzed with the help of a camera in keyhole surgery.

Similarly, Kämena’s photos reveal internal and suspicious places in architecture. They are microscopic enlargements of organisms, cells, and possibly also tumors that don’t naturally belong in An architectural body. These excesses or mutations arise and develop autonomously from the form and meaning of the encasing, the body, the architecture. Here, and in Kämena’s work, there is no answer on the basis of the photos to the inevitable question of whether medical intervention in a number of cases is necessary. And the documentary detachment, maintained for aesthetic reasons, is, from an ethical perspective, perhaps for the best as well.

Maar een handvol foto’s in dit boek tonen een bescheiden blik op de wereld buiten de begrenzing van woning of kamer, het kantoor of laboratorium. En zelfs dan geven ze slechts een hint van de locatie of omgeving die grenst aan het gefotografeerde interieur.

Door een raam is bijvoorbeeld het stedelijk landschap van de Rotterdamse Wilhelminapier badend in ijl zonlicht te zien.

Of we zien een non-descript deel van een rijtjeshuis of de vage contouren van een anoniem bedrijventerrein met bomen. Maar echt veel informatie geven de uitzichten niet prijs. Het zijn bleke en ijle achtergronden die niet de kracht en de helderheid bezitten om het interieur, waar de fotograaf zich bevindt, noemenswaardig te beïnvloeden. Door die krachteloosheid roepen de uitzichten ook nauwelijks emoties op. Ze versterken daarmee nog eens extra de intenties van de fotograaf. De foto’s met een uitzicht zijn de uitzonderingen die de regel moeten bevestigen. Het gaat Kämena duidelijk om het accentueren van interieurs. Interne, grotendeels gesloten, ruimtes die getypeerd worden door beschutting, begrenzingen en beperkingen. Het gaat hier om het introverte. Binnen die ruimtes vindt een fascinerend visueel gevecht om aandacht plaats tussen grafische details, kleuren, lichtval, schaduw, composities en objecten. Concreter geformuleerd, zijn we getuige van spullen, opstellingen en ruimtelijke choreografieën waarin we de mens en zijn dagelijkse beslommeringen, werkzaamheden, gewoontes en voorkeuren kunnen herkennen.

De mens als acteur en regisseur van de getoonde ruimtes blijft overigens ook, vergelijkbaar met de onzichtbare uitzichten, op vrijwel alle foto’s buiten beeld. Wat te zien is, zijn vooral de restanten, de sporen, het residu van uiteenlopende variaties van menselijk handelen. Dat kan, op basis van deze selectie foto’s, bestaan uit redelijk gestructureerde en geordende bezigheden.

Bezigheden die echter ook zomaar kunnen escaleren in

verschillende vormen van dwangmatigheid. Het menselijk handelen kan ook plaatsvinden via vrij chaotische patronen en processen die leiden tot een soort ruimtelijke radeloosheid.

Tenslotte zien we ook dat de mens op vaak redelijk onbeholpen manieren tracht zich ruimtes toe te eigenen. Dat gebeurt ofwel door een overdaad aan decoratief geachte aanpassingen of door het, geïnspireerd of niet, creëren van extreme en bijna voelbare leegte. Door het gelijktijdig presenteren van voorbeelden van beide uitersten, en vele varianten daartussen in, bereikt de fotograaf veel, maar zeker ook een onweerstaanbaar gevoel van zelfmedelijden bij de kijker. De interieurs zijn stuk voor stuk tragische reflecties van menselijke tekortkomingen op het gebied van binnen-ruimtelijke ordening. De gebreken en visieloosheid bij zowel het maken als inrichten en ordenen van ruimte zijn hier zo krachtig en schrijnend in beeld gebracht dat de evidente fascinatie voor de gevonden ruimtes en composities én de fotografische kwaliteit er bijna onvoldoende tegenwicht aan kunnen bieden.

Kämena is ongetwijfeld gefascineerd door de relatie tussen ruimte en menselijk handelen. Hij houdt ons daarbij doelbewust, maar op genuanceerde wijze, een spiegel voor. De foto’s in dit boek zijn daarom op zowel psychologisch als visueel-ruimtelijk vlak te duiden als interior landscapes. Het zijn bijna pittoreske taferelen die echter een meervoudige gelaagdheid verhullen en betekenissen suggereren. De aandacht voor deze, vaak visueel complexe en intrigerende, plekken wordt daarbij dus vergroot doordat de blik van de kijker op geen enkele wijze wordt afgeleid of verleid door ‘signalen’ uit de buitenwereld. Telkens weer voorkomen wisselende objecten, de stand of instelling van de camera een mogelijke binding met het exterieur of de aanhechting van binnen met buiten. Die visuele blokkades of feitelijke hindernissen variëren van een overdaad aan Haunted by detail

binnenvallend daglicht, gordijnen, roosters of planten. Vaak suggereren of tonen de foto’s ook ruimtes waar een raam, deur of andere opening geheel afwezig zijn. Een aantal keren is de aanwezigheid van een opening alleen indirect is af te leiden door de lichtval op een muur of de vloer. De getoonde interieurs zijn daardoor vrijwel autonome plaatsen geworden.

Door deze duidelijk georkestreerde selectie en beeldregie ontstaat in dit werk van Kämena gelijktijdig concentratie én vervreemding. Veel van de interieurs bezitten een hoge mate van aanwezigheid en scherpte, maar ze zijn ook plaatsloos en universeel. De dood-lopende gangen, de achteloos geplaatste kantoorkasten, de chaos van uiteenlopende consumptiegoederen: het zijn stuk voor stuk parels van een alledaagse banaliteit. De beelden bezitten een hoge mate van herkenbaarheid. Iedereen (her)kent wel één of meerdere vergelijkbare plaatsen of situaties.

Toch weten we, zelfs na een minutieuze bestudering van narratieve details in de foto’s, vrijwel nooit waar zich een interieur exact bevindt. Deze parallelle aanwezigheid van herkenning en vervreemding is een boeiende paradox. Kämena selecteert specifieke interieurs op verschillende locaties, weekt ze los van hun omgeving, zoomt in op details, maar creëert uiteindelijk redelijk herkenbare beelden. Het zijn feitelijk telkens weer variaties op een thema.

Maar de meest constante factor in deze selectie foto’s, naast de eerder genoemde tragiek van menselijke tekortkomingen op het gebied van binnen-ruimtelijke ordening, is eigenlijk het kader om of het omhulsel rond de interieurs. Elk interieur maakt tenslotte deel uit van een groter geheel van architectonische constructies: een huis, kantoor, fabriek of laboratorium. Die constante verbindt ook alle foto’s met elkaar. De feitelijke architectuur wordt in de

foto’s, overeenkomstig de omgeving en de mens overigens niet getoond. Maar anders dan de twee andere, onzichtbare elementen is architectuur letterlijk een drager van het interieur en daarmee ook van de foto’s van Kämena. Omgekeerd geformuleerd, in een fictieve situatie waarin zowel omgeving als menselijke gebruikers zouden ontbreken, zou er nog steeds sprake kunnen zijn van interieurs. Bij afwezigheid van een architectonische constructie, het raamwerk, vervalt echter ook het interieur. Ruimte, interieur en architectuur zijn dus onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. De foto’s van Kämena gaan dus, wellicht wel boven al het voorgaande, vooral over architectuur. Het werk toont architectuur vooral als iets dat andere dingen insluit, omhult, verbergt en beschermt. De wijze waarop Kämena architectuur in beeld brengt is zo nog wel het beste te vergelijken met een medisch onderzoek. Zijn foto’s zijn binnen deze vergelijking dan het equivalent van beelden die artsen verkrijgen van bepaalde inwendige plekken in het lichaam.

Verdachte plekken of gebieden die met behulp van camera’s bij een kijkoperatie nader bekeken en geanalyseerd kunnen worden.

De foto’s van Kämena tonen op vergelijkbare wijze inwendige en verdachte plekken in de architectuur. Het zijn microscopische uitvergrotingen van organismen, cellen en wellicht ook tumoren die niet als vanzelfsprekend thuishoren in een architectonisch lichaam. De in beeld gebrachte excessen of mutaties bestaan en ontwikkelen zich daarbij los en autonoom van de vorm en betekenis van het omhulsel, het lichaam, de architectuur. Op de onvermijdelijke vraag of een medische ingreep, op basis van de foto’s, in een aantal gevallen noodzakelijk is volgt hier en in de foto’s van Kämena geen antwoord. En die registrerende terughoudendheid, uitgevoerd op een hoogwaardig esthetische wijze, is vanuit ethische gronden misschien ook maar het beste.
